VIBRANT GROWTH

Where Pineapple Grove meets with Artist’s Alley by Tara Monks The Pineapple Staff Writer

In the modern digital world, it seems like parades would have joined the eight track tape player or Model T on the waste heap of history. But there is something heartwarming and so human in the sights and sounds of a parade. And Delray sure knows how to put them on! The Annual Delray Beach St. Patricks Day Parade is filled with floats, bands, fire trucks, leprechauns, the sublime and the ridiculous marching down Main Street of the Fairest City in America. Our City’s Annual Tribute to Firefighters has become an international affair in the past few years, drawing participants from Ireland,

Australia, Belgium, Canada and twenty states. Now, in its 44th year, what began as a little stroll down Atlantic Avenue by a local Irish barkeep named Maury Powers has become the largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the state and one of the largest in the nation as crowds close to 100,000 people have thronged Downtown Delray Beach. This years parade is presented by Bru’s Room. The Saturday, March 17th event runs from 11:00am 7:00pm, with the parade starting at 2:00pm. The Parade is produced by Festival Management Group as a service to everyone’s favorite hometown.

3rd Annual All People’s Day Diversity Festival DELRAY BEACH, FL - The third annual All People’s Day Diversity Festival will take place Saturday, March 31 from 9:30am to 5:00pm at the S D Spady School 901 NW 3RD St. and NW 10th Ave. This free to the public event boasts a wide variety of activities for the whole family. Starting at 11 am, dazzling performances of dance, music, social theatre, and poetry spanning the globe will commence on the

stage in 15 minute intervals. These beautifully costumed artists include Chinese Performing Arts (dance), Rising Phoenix (Middle -Eastern dance), the Delray Divas (African-American foot stomp), Fushu Daiko (Japanese Taiko drumming), SD Spady Diversity Skit, Robin Ren (Argentine Tango), Puppet Network (enormous size puppet percontinued on p. 3 formance), Temple Sinai

s Delray residents and visitors should already know, Pineapple Grove is the perfect space for Sunday brunches, intimate dinners and a mystery novel. The Grove reaches along NE 2nd and NE 3rd Avenues, as far north as Lake Ida Road and east toward the train tracks, giving shade to bird lovers, skater kids, arts enthusiasts and fans of a great pizza place. Welcome to the top fronds of Pineapple Grove: where the tranquil murmur of shops meets the ascending applause of Artist’s Alley. The northeast side of Pineapple Grove and the recently rooted Artist’s Alley are sowing the seeds for a successful future as a thriving district of Delray. It is cultivating, growing and on the brink of burgeoning into a melting pot of arts, entertainment and delicacies. It is within this district you will find some of the most interesting, enthusiastic and genuine people in Delray. Some have been here for years and are staples to the lives of many (Brenda’s Birds, Camilucci Signs, and Coffee District), while others have just found the area and are adding to its eclecticism. Meet Vladimir, for example, a new addition to Artist’s Alley. Vladimir Prodanovich works and lives amid the paint-peppered

cement floors of his studio. Ten-foot easels support figure sketches and paintings, color references and a kitten’s play space. Buckets of paint, plaster and books are throughout. Vladimir is an industrial artist. His creations range from simple mixed-media model studies to massive murals and sculptures. While seemingly brazen in attitude, and known to buck at bureaucracy and authority, he is inherently kind, thoughtful and interested in others. You can find him next door to Camilucci’s sign shop, continued on p. 21

Tennis tourney in full swing

FOOD AND TRAVEL MIX WELL

Jimmy Mills: chef and owner of Jimmy’s Bistro by Rigel Herman The Pineapple Staff Writer

I think if everyone knew how to make a simple tomato sauce at home, the world might be a little better place. - Chef Jimmy Mills

Despite being the chef and owner of one of Delray Beach’s most popular restaurants, Jimmy Mills remains unaffected by the stereotypes that seem to commonly consume many of his peers. Chefs are known to be irritable, even arrogant. If Mills is cranky or over-worked, he doesn’t show it. This could be chalked up to the fact that his restaurant, Jimmy’s Bistro, located just South of Atlantic Ave. on Swinton, is only seven tables and the kitchen is open. It would be difficult for Mills to behave erratically or with pomposity that his customers could literally see. So it could be that he’s hiding it. But with one conversation and a peer into his eyes that hold so much sincerity, it’s obvious that what he’s cultivated is authentic. If you’ve never been, Jimmy’s is known firstly for its cuisine. The food is fresh, made from scratch, local and straightforward. The menu, which is scrawled on the wall behind the bar in chalk, (no paper version exists) changes, “frequently, yet not regularly,” based on Mills’ mood, inspiration and, of course, what’s available.

Currently, for example, you can find zucchini flowers (the top part of a zucchini that eludes many) listed as an appetizer. Locally grown and purchased by Mills from Pontano Farms, he interprets them for the plate by stuffing them with eggplant and ricotta, breading, frying and dressing them with olive tapenade. Surrounded by big, upscale and restaurateur-owned establishments, continued on p. 20

Choir, Haitian American Solidarity (dance) as well as numerous others, treating the attendees to a vast array of cultural experiences. Prizes donated by local businesses and merchandise booths are to be raffled off. Over 40 interactive and merchandise booths will feature a diverse mix to see and do. One will find arts projects such as Origami Peace Crane folding and family mural painting, health and issue based activities, clever word games by non profits, as well as for sale items such as artwork, jewelry, and mouthwatering international cuisine. A free workshop from 9:30 to 11:00 am will teach children to make the Craft Dough People. Plain white craft dough will be divided into five parts. Food colors representing the brown, beige, red, gold, or mixed skin tones will be added to each part. From these the kids will make five small faces on the same surface.

A different kind of “boardroom” It’s a family affair at new boutique surf shop by Tara Monks The Pineapple Staff Writer

Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.

These are the words of Albert Einstein, told to Adam Runyon by his father on such a regular basis during his youth, the statement has since evolved into a staple of belief. Adam Runyon is the owner and operator of The Board Room, Delray’s newest and finest addition to Atlantic Avenue. A walk through the shop will show you a high-end surf shop and clothing gallery with a hint of carefree or Boho-SoHo board-lesson-andrental company. Pick your preferred terminology for The Board Room; it’s all the same to Adam, as long as you love it. Runyon opened The Board Room in January 2012 on East Atlantic Avenue with the help of his family and closest friends. Often, visitors will meet his daughters in the store, his brother at the register and family friends helping others find the perfect paddleboard, pair of sunglasses or presents for their wives (because the dresses are to die for). As the grandson of the founder of Ellen Tracy, Adam has worked in and gained a thorough knowledge of the fashion industry, from

warehouse work to piece goods, production and sales. But always, as Adam explains, he grew up loving the boards. When asked for his own interpretation of The Board Room, he reveals, “I wanted to incorporate my background in fashion with my love of the ocean.” When asked about his inspiration and motivation, he smiles and begins discussing his daughters, 11-year-old Zoe and 9-year-old Jillian, as the strength behind his stamina, and then moves on to his mother, his “best friend” who keeps him on his toes. While opening a boutique surf shop has always been a dream of his, it was not a planned reality until September 2011. Within three months of deciding to fulfill his vision of a fresh-faced surf shop, he converted the empty space at 1155 East Atlantic into a work of art that not only showcases product, but also seeks to “plant the seeds for a good future within Delray Beach.” And his imagination has created something that can only surpass visions of a good future.

The custom designed board racks, display cases and cabinetry made of recycled and repurposed products, along with the two televisions, great music and positive energy emanating through the store create an environment that is not only fresh and beautifully distinct, but enjoyable. Those who come, stay for a while. There is no in-and-out visit here, thanks to an air of welcome, comfort and hospitality sometimes missed in Florida stores. Adam is friendly, a little too cool for school and happy to show you what just came in. His younger brother Brandon is as freshfaced as the shop, energetic and eager to please. His daughters are just an added bundle of joy to be around. If you haven’t stopped in yet, because you’ve either been on your way to yet another tourist trap or because you just weren’t sure what The Board Room was all about, it’s time you take a few steps past the front door and into the refreshing feel of authentic people trying to make an authentic business succeed. Once inside you will find some of the best products in the industry, including Starbord and Yolo paddle boards; Bing and COS surfboards; men’s clothing by Honolua, Xcel, Toes on the Nose, Dakine and OluKai; women’s clothing by Gypsy 05, Le Soleil, Hard Tail, Bettinis Swimwear, Voom and Hiho; accessories by Catherine M Zadeh and M. Cohen and sunglasses by Maui Jim, Kaenon and Spy Optic. These brands, of course, are just to name a few. And it’s not just the brands that are selling. When people come into The Board Room, they are struck by the fresh approach to the traditional surf shop. It is the personification of family, friends, passion and fashion – a different kind of luxury. Adam Runyon has worked hard to create an interesting mixture of beach-life influences, topped off with a commitment to providing for his family and the community in which he lives – Delray Beach. Just as his father instilled a sense of imagination, his family has continued to influence his motives. His business will never be about cut-throat economics and below-the-belt competitive tactics. It will always be honest, in an effort to set great examples for his kids. In following suit with notions of creativity and imagination, Adam seems to have actualized another of his concepts: “Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.” And we all know, once you find and do what you love, success follows. IF YOU VISIT: The Board Room - Mon-Sun 9am-6pm 1155 E Atlantic Ave, Suite 104

Mangrove Park boat ramps reconstruction city project completed The City of Delray Beach announced that the reconstruction of the Mangrove Park boat ramps, located at 1211 South Federal Highway, has been completed. The reconstruction project corrected the severe slope of the boat ramps, which made it difficult for boaters to launch and retrieve their vessels safely. The redesign of the boat ramps included removal of the old boat ramps and floating dock and re-grading the ramps to maintain a reduced slope. These improvements are expected to result in increased boat ramp usage while making it easier to launch and retrieve vessels. Total funding for this project was $188,240, which was funded with grant awards from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) ($102,500) and the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND) ($85,740). Village Stroll Crest Theatre at Old School Square

Housed in the restored 1925 Delray High School building, the Crest Theatre was dedicated in 1993 as the performing arts center. Originally the high school auditorium, the Crest Theatre was re-designed as a charming, 323-seat, state-of-the-art facility combining the original high school color (blue) with warm burgundy and gold accents. The original stage was only 12 feet deep; therefore two stories of additional space were added during restoration to provide backstage, dressing room and storage areas. The original proscenium remains an important historic feature of the theater. The Crest provides a truly intimate entertainment experience. The Main Stage Series (November-April) offers professional theatre, music and dance as well as national tours, comedy, and unique variety shows. The Broadway Cabaret Series (January-April) features Broadway’s hottest stars. The Lecture Series (January-April) features notable speakers from around the country and a wide variety of topics. The Crest also serves as an important venue for other organizations, schools and community groups to present their own productions, presentations and town meetings. Surrounding the theatre are nine beautifully restored classrooms which now serve as meeting, workshop, reception and art class space.

Delray Beach - For the past 13 years, the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships (ITC) has seen many stars come through its pearly white gates at the Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center. In 2012, the event is going to amp it up even more, hosting the world's only ten-day 'Super Event' featuring tennis champions past and present—exploding into a combined professional men's ATP World Tour and ATP Champions Tour event, and running simultaneously through March 4. And yet, even tennis’ most-revered legends could not charmingly court the ITC grounds like its charismatic promotional team - the VolleyGirls. The ITC’s VolleyGirls are the ambassadors and spokespersons of the event - the iconic figurines of the ITC both on-site at the tournament's sponsors' private parties, PR engagements with players on-air in TV and radio, as well as appearances in the Delray Beach community and Palm Beach County. The VolleyGirls must be at least 18 years of age, sporty, electric, professional,

engaging and charming. The ‘Girls’ colorfully diverse backgrounds appropriately adorn the International Tennis Championships, as some past and current ‘Girls’ hail from Colombia, Brazil, Morocco, Germany, Romania, Yugoslavia, as well as South Florida’s playgrounds in Palm Beach, Broward and MiamiDade counties. “When we started the VolleyGirl campaign in 2007, we thought it would be popular, but never realized the extent to which these girls became the iconic figures of the event they did,” said John Butler, Executive Director of the Delray Beach ITC. “Now they’ve received national recognition, endorsement deals with incredible fashion boutiques and make-up lines…It’s all just exploded in such a fantastic way. They’ve become an ideal representation of the event.”

Pineapple Profile: Eric Biddines may be the most honest and complex artist you’ll ever hear An artist recognizes Eric and tells him that they need to collaborate on his next album. It was a reggae artist and Eric agrees to meet with him for a cup of coffee after our meeting is done. Everyone wants to get Eric on his or her team. Jazz Singer Chloe Dolandis recently sat in with him at his Arts Garage concert; someone has approached him to use his song ‘Delray Rock’ to support an upcoming bid for Delray city commissioner. I ask Eric what he’s going to do when he gets signed and becomes a superstar. He says he doesn’t need to worry about that and tells me that a dollar in your pocket is all you need to make change. It’s one of his lines from his latest album and I suddenly realize why he needs all the coffee; he’s got a world to change. For more on Eric Biddines go to www.ericbiddines.com

MUST - SEE MUSIC IN MARCH Thru March 4 Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center International Tennis Tournament. Between matches catch top notch musical acts on the main stage! ITC time is one of my favorite times of the year for good music (and good tennis). March 2 thru 4 - Old School Square Reflections of Rosemary- Debby Boone, Pat Boone's daughter, has taken the music of Rosemary Clooney to new heights, mastering the timing, intonation and from-theheart intimacy she perfected. Debby was recently featured on Oprah’s final season. For tickets: www.oldschool.org

T

he 27-year-old husband and father of two spends (almost) as much time in coffee shops as he does in the studio, tweets more than he talks, (@ericbiddines) and while you’re sleeping (assuming you’re in bed by 2am) he is either playing a college show, recording his next mix tape/video/EP, or supporting another up-and-coming Florida MC. But, despite his 6’2” stature, gold teeth (they come out) and arm full of tattoos, Eric Biddines may be the most honest and complex artist you will ever hear.

His meetings are always over coffee. It doesn’t matter the time of day; coffee is Eric’s motivation. He could be in the club or in the recording booth, it’s always coffee. “I’ve never drank or done any drugs” the rapper declares with pride, “but I’ve been on my coffee beans since I can remember” It’s no wonder, because Eric doesn’t seem to ever stop moving. “I want success more then I want sleep,” he says. “I also want to be a great father, so I do most of my performances and recording after the kids have gone to bed.” A drug and alcohol free rapper who is a responsible father? Could this be the new face of hip-hop?

When you listen to Eric’s lyrics you can tell that something’s different. He’s got a very visual lyrical style but it’s not his style that’s the most different. When you’re listening to him you are reminded of some of his influences, namely Andre 3000 of the group Outkast, mixed with a little Al Greene. No, it’s the feeling that you get when you listen to his albums. It’s a mood of someone trying to do more with their music, not in the sense that he is preaching or talking about world peace per-se, but in that he’s telling his story. And it’s a compelling story. “I’m trying to change lives with my music in a positive way, the way music changed my life. I want to tell the story of the average person making something out of nothing,” he says. Talking to Eric, it would seem that getting picked up by a major record label is a forgone conclusion. So why hasn’t it happened yet? Eric sips his coffee, sends out a few tweets, looks off and tells me. “I would have been signed (by a record label) already if I followed the trends, but I didn’t want to do anything that wasn’t completely me. If you stay your course it

takes a little longer for the labels to come, but when they do, they will do what you want.” Then Eric stops to think. He’s always thinking past the moment, thinking past changing the rap scene. Eric is thinking about how to change the whole music scene. He stops to tweet and remind his followers to go and check out his new video that just came out. Its called ‘Southern FLA’ and it’s the title track of his Southern FLA album, an album that is as hard hitting as it is smooth and thoughtful, and features the song ‘Delray Rock’ which is an anthem for anyone who has any history in Delray. “I just wanted to make an album that was easy to digest.” What that means to you is that you will like it. No matter where you are from. Eric is passionate about building not only his own brand, but also the brand of South Florida. “Artists need to sharpen their focus,” he says. “As an artist right now, you can’t blame anything on the area. The people are here and they are willing to listen, we just need to be thoughtful about our music and innovate!”

March 3rd - DADA The Hard Richards - Ska (Punk music + Horns = Ska) isn't usually my thing, but these guys put on a great show and their energy is infectious! March 24 - Arts Garage One of the greatest jazz duos returns to Delray with their band to entertain and delight audiences with their amazing style. For tickets: www.artsgarage.org March 29 - Hurricane Lounge Girlfriend Material is rocking the Hurricane Lounge as they tend to do. This band is pure fun, don't miss them. Fridays in March - Bull Bar Catch the 3 Amigos doing their own brand of covers. Always a sure bet. April 7 - Arts Garage, Urban Underground "Rappers Delight" part 2 - Back by popular demand, the best MCs in Florida as they take you on a tour through the roots of Hip Hop with the Arts Garage House band. Drew Tucker is the founder of Tucker Music Academy. MARCH 2012

D

rew and The Woo is a regular Pineapple series that follows two young professionals as they look for the perfect night out in Delray Beach. They'll need a happy hour, a sub-20-buck dinner, some live music and a late-night hot spot. Call it a scavenger hunt, bar crawl or even a mild bender. Either way - you're going to want to follow in their footsteps. At the end of the year, Drew and The Woo will select their top choice for each category and invite the whole city to come out and join them for "The Best Night Out In Downtown Delray."

HAPPY HOUR Falcon House, An oldie, but a goodie. This rustic approach to an art bar is borderline tropical with its outdoor seating and lush surroundings. Happy hour includes half off most drinks from 5pm-7pm. Drew: I hear we have some company tonight, huh? Ryan: The word is out. This monthly series is interactive. Followers can either read about what we did - or read about what they did with us. I love it. Drew: Well next month a few Delray regulars are going to be reading about themselves enjoying half off drinks at Falcon House. We even have a City Commission candidate joining us in our quest. Ryan: - Wait! You’re not going to name the candidate, are you? If we feature one, we’ll have to give equal opportunity to the rest. Drew: True. So it’s official; we’re inviting all City Commission candidates to join us for a Drew and The Woo Night. Ryan: As long as they’re buying.

W W W. D E L R A Y P I N E A P P L E . C O M

Drew: Well that isn’t an issue at Falcon House. All the drinks are half off. Not two for one, but half off. Ryan: So if I want an odd number of drinks, it’s cool? Drew: One, three, five… eleven. Knock your self out. Anyway you drink it, you’re getting a deal. Ryan: Eleven? I’d better order a few of these tasty tapas. Drew: Go for it. Falcon House was rocking the tapas menu long before it became a restaurant craze. Most plates are $8.88 or less and are perfect for sharing. Ryan: I’m not sharing my Parmesan Fries with you, if that’s what you’re getting at. Drew: I was simply pointing out that Falcon House is an original. Ryan: Indeed, to its bones. The setting has a South American vibe. Open windows and doors combine the indoor and outdoor environments. Warm reds complement the tropical surroundings and create a chill lounge feel. Drew: Half off drinks, delicious tapas and a relaxing indoor/outdoor bar. What more could you ask for in a Happy Hour? Ryan: A tab picked up by our City Commission Candidates. DINNER FOR UNDER $20 The Shack A new addition to the Ave – The Shack is a real deal sub shop with a tiki hut twist. An affordable draft beer selection and the place is always buzzing. Enjoy a sub, some tunes and a little bimini ring anytime. Drew: It’s my favorite place to order lunch from downtown. Ryan: You just like it because they deliver to your office in a Hawaiian wrapped golf cart with a surfboard on top.

Drew: Seeing that red cart pull up makes my day. Ryan: For sure. Especially since it’s filled with giant tasty sandwiches. Drew: Which brings us to why we’re here. Among a sea of Subway’s and Quiznos – the classic, local sub (or submarine) shop has sadly become a thing of the past. But now, places like Laspadas and our very own The Shack are bringing the sub back! Ryan: And they’re doing it by using quality ingredients and a heavy hand. The Shack Special that I just ordered only cost $9.28 and I won’t have to eat for three days. Drew: Make that sandwich a combo with an interesting beer selection, Rastafar Rye Ale, and some Dirty’s potato chips – and you’re out the door for only $15.62. Ryan: I know you love to get take out, but I bet most people want to eat in at this joint. It’s bohemian, yet refined. There’s a tiki hut in the back, some photos of patrons on the wall and very hip orange glass counter tops that are actually made by the owner. Drew: So the owner of The Shack also makes futuristic glass counter tops? Ryan: And he gets to drive the SHACK-MOBILE whenever he wants. Drew: My hero. LIVE MUSIC Blue Anchor The Blue Anchor is an English pub in Downtown Delray with a rich history and a soft spot for tradition. It’s the bar of choice for locals who want to catch live music, watch a soccer game or just chow on authentic fish & chips. Drew: Ah, yes. My own secret downtown pub. Ryan: Secret? The place is packed. Drew: Yeah but it’s a different kind of “packed.” This place always feels like I’m hanging out with a group of friends, rather than a crowd of strangers. Ryan: That’s probably because everyone here is a Delray local and I’m pretty sure most of them are your actual friends. Drew: No, no. This little pub has always had something the other bars don’t. Ryan: Scotch eggs? Drew: No. Authenticity. The food, the bartenders and even the patrons. This place is real. It’s like my living room, but with great live music… Ryan: …and an old school cigarette machine. Which proves that The Blue Anchor doesn’t care about trends. It cruises along, untouched by time. No energy drink infused shots, no DJs, and definitely no bedazzled shirts. Drew: Right. Get this – we ran into a couple that not only met at Blue Anchor 20 years ago, they met while listening to the same band. Ryan: And not like 20 years ago they were both here, listening to Rolling Stones on the jukebox. They were here actually seeing the same live band 20 years ago that still plays now, Mad Cow.

T H E D E L R AY B E A C H PI N E A P P L E

Drew: That says a lot for Blue Anchor, but maybe even more about Mad Cow. This band is like ZZ Tops’ beards; classic. We looked them up on Facebook while they we’re playing and – Ryan: - I’m sorry. These guys are on “The Facebook?” Drew: Yes, and they have quite a presence. Their profile nails what they bring to Blue Anchor week after week…“A high-energy trip back to the Sixties and Seventies with these three guys is contagious! Led by Stewart on vocals, guitar and keyboard. (Yes folks, he plays both instruments at the same time!) This talented trio carries you right back to rock's golden era. Whatever lights your fire - The Doors, Beatles, Hendrix, The Stones or Pink Floyd - this band will make you want to sing and dance 'til you drop.” Ryan: Wow. My profile just says “Male. Married.” Drew: Sounds like you’re just not as cool as Mad Cow. Online or offline. Ryan: That hurts bro. Fortunately we’re meeting the Spot Coffee crew at our next stop. My cool level is about to be turned to eleven.

LATE NIGHT SPOT Pepe’s Hideaway Delray Beach’s second oldest bar, Pepe’s Hideaway boasts a location that’s perfect for beachside tourists looking for a late night local’s spot. Expect good service and strong drinks. Ryan: Pepe’s Hideaway is a Bar in every sense of the word. That’s probably why their sign just says, “The Bar.” Drew: Let’s run down the “Bar Checklist.” Liquor? Ryan: Check. Drew: Pool table? Ryan: Check. Drew: Smokey? Ryan: Check Drew: Jukebox? Ryan: Check. Drew: Friendly bartenders? Ryan: Check. Drew: Open till 2am or later? Ryan: Check. Drew: Darts? Ryan: Check Drew: Yup, we have ourselves a bar. Ryan: I think it’s cool to call it a dive bar. I mean, especially since people seem to have become recently infatuated with dives. Drew: You’re right. In a world filled with martini bars, nightclubs, craft brew houses and hookah lounges – the dive bar is flat out refreshing. Ryan: Thank you! My feelings exactly. This place is completely refreshing. It’s simple, and straightforward. Drink some beer, play some games and jam out to Def Leppard. Drew: All in a sprawling two-story location hidden just East of the Intracoastal. Ryan: Just look for “The Bar” sign – and you’ll find this late night dive. Drew: Cheers! To dive bars! TAB. TAXI. BED. Want us to consider your favorite local hangout? by Melissa McCart Courtesy NewTimes Broward-Palm Beach Delray Beach has earned bragging rights. Dense with restaurants down Atlantic Avenue, the beachfront town has swept the votes for New Times' first Food Town Throwdown. At 1,766 votes, it trounced West Palm/Lake Worth in the final round. From Sundy House and DaDa, all the way down to Boston's on the Beach, Delray and its range of restaurants clinched the win. A monied clientele continues to lure restauranteurs, twenty years after Elwood's sparked the neighborhood revival. Just last month, Park Tavern debuted, a second restaurant from the folks behind Cut 432, seated just a few doors away. And the owners of the new Union, an Asian Gastrolounge, considered Ft. Lauderdale’s new Himmarshee Landing in early stages, then defected to a neighborhood with more allure. The final choices between Delray and West Palm/Lake Worth reinforce that we gravitate toward towns with a center. This New Urbanism is the building of communities that embrace historic preservation that are conducive for biking and walking. Delray's good eats are the spoils of progressive city planning.

TEN DELRAY HAPPY HOUR HOTSPOTS PROBLEM: The workweek can get pretty monotonous, especially if you’re a weekend warrior. SOLUTION: Break up the week by going to Happy Hour. Too many people save the party for Friday, but in Delray, with all the great food, what’s so wrong with getting some happy hour fare and a cocktail on a Tuesday or a Wednesday night? You’re home by 8pm just in time for all your prime time, must-see TV shows and it won’t cut into your beauty rest. Some of these Delray restaurants even offer a weekend happy hour, so if you can’t justify going out during the week, a weekend happy hour might just be up your alley.

With so many delicious Happy Hours to choose from on the Ave, your workweek can easily be made fun. These Delray restaurants have great appetizer choices, so if you’re into having a glass of wine or two and a light dinner, ordering a few apps from any of these menus makes a great dinner. Wanting genuine bar conversation or just some great service, City Oyster and Tryst are the places to be. Hands down, the best bartenders on the Avenue, City Oyster offers $1 off oysters and clams for their Happy Hour from 4 to 7 all week long. What better accompaniment to a beer or a shot of vodka than an oyster, especially on a Sunday. And from 4 to 7 Monday thru Friday, Tryst offers drinks ranging from $2 to $6 and a delicious bar menu sure to satisfy any dinner cravings, like chicken Pad Thai $13 or the local favorite, Fish Tacos for $7. Jimmy’s Bistro

from page 1

Jimmy’s doesn’t have to try to be different. Based solely on location and size, it just is. Of course competition in the restaurant industry is fierce; fortunately and with great care, Mills has created a place where people can experience a different side of dining in Delray Beach. Servers without uniforms, a bar without liquor (beer and wine are all that’s offered), Jimmy’s has made its own rules, without the pretense of trying too hard. While tourists tout that they’ve been to the best joints in Manhattan, Jimmy’s gives them a run for their money with its tenacity and realness. Jimmy’s is a place that would thrive in New York City, but would maybe fall flat in the suburbs, where diners expect a uniformity and sameness in their meals based on region or commercialism. Growing up on a “bad ass” farm in West Virginia (the accent hasn’t been lost), Mills was taught the value of hunting and gathering his meals from an early age. “I learned a love of nature, the value of where things come from,” Mills said, adding, “Strawberries don’t come

from the store, they come from the ground.” With this philosophy, Mills’ food has been written up in The New Times as, “So honest and heartfelt that diners will want to eat everything.” His dishes were photographed for Conde Nast Traveler’s story, “A Tour of Florida’s Hot Spots” and have garnered a high Zagat Guide rating. Most notable though, is Mills himself. It takes guts to open a restaurant like Jimmy’s Bistro. And though he may not admit to being courageous, his spirit of unwavering wanderlust seems to tell the real story. After dropping out of college because he didn’t get good grades and felt “uninterested,” he attended culinary school in New Jersey. Cooking school wasn’t a back up plan or a willy nilly endeavor. On the contrary, he’d always had a passion for it and once it finally appeared to him as an actual “path,” he excelled. After graduating he lived in New York City and worked at three-star restaurant Le Chantilly and then at Aureole. But it was his irresistible desire to travel that seem to have

had the greatest impact on the chef and the man that he is today. He first went to Paris and worked in a restaurant there for a year, learning “the respect that the French have for dining out.” After that, he went to Israel and took a job. Of that experience Mills said, “the people there eat very healthy; I’ve never been so healthy as I was then.” His need to wander then led him to Africa, Thailand, South America and Southeast Asia, where he says he was the most heavily influenced. “They have a totally different usage of ingredients that is more complex and multi-layered…they want sweet, sour, soft, crunchy, hot, spicy. They really want to shock their taste buds.” Family eventually brought Mills to Delray Beach, but he stayed and opened Jimmy’s Bistro here because, “what’s not to like, c’mon, it’s obvious,” referring mostly to the close proximity of the beach. Though the food at Jimmy’s is what initially lures its customers in, Mills is the reason

Manager extraordinaire Julie Levy is always quick with a smile and a recommendation

they come back. Diners can see him in the kitchen, hard at work, sometimes even hear him singing along to a song playing on Pandora from the laptop behind the bar. He always steps out to greet his guests. He has the right amount of charm and familiarity with them to engage in friendly and folksy conversation without being disingenuous. His regulars (as most customers fancy themselves) like him. Dining at Jimmy’s feels like you’re a part of a club, an intimate and homey clique of people with similar tastes. Delray local and bi-weekly regular, Sean Sheppard said, “I like the food the most. But I like the way Jimmy always makes you feel appreciated, comes out and says hello. And I’ve met a lot of cool townies there, people that I’d like to keep hanging out with. Jimmy included, of course…maybe that’s what I like most.” Mills is not a fan of superficiality and it comes across clearly in his restaurant. He says the food is for everyone, but isn’t thrilled to modify his dishes. “The bottom line is,” Mills said, “it’s my interpretation of a dish, my idea of perfect. Try it that way, if you don’t like it, get something else.” Although one suspects from his increasingly full reservation book, that his talent rarely fails him. With such a gift to create interesting and delicious food and a knack for bonafide likability, how does Mills sustain his humility? Without it, Jimmy’s Bistro wouldn’t succeed. That seems to be one way. Another lies in his idea that, “there shouldn’t be any guidelines, any rules; in cooking or in life. Have a moral compass, be a good person, other than that, no rules.” Of his talent and his restaurant’s growing success, Mills said, “It’s one thing I can do well. Though I ain’t a bad golfer either.” Final Four: A quick take on the man with the plan. Q: Pineapple: What’s your favorite spot in Delray? A: Jimmy: “The beach, duh.” Q: Pineapple: What’s your favorite album? A: Jimmy: “Dire Straits, Dire Straits.” Q: Pineapple: What’s your favorite food? A: Jimmy: “Spaghetti with fresh tomato sauce.” Q: Pineapple: What’s your guilty pleasure? A: Jimmy: “Expensive sunglasses. No, blackjack or the horse track…that makes me feel cooler.”

working on his paintings and pieces and wanting to talk, even more than he lets on. Then there’s the man with the vision, Vincent Cacace. Once a staple to Atlantic Avenue, Vincent has moved Cacace Fine Art to a custom-built industrial-chic space within Artist’s Alley. The transition between outside and interior is dramatic, as Artist’s Alley is still a work in progress. But once inside, visitors are immersed in an elegant world of fresh white walls, oil landscapes and other works by James P. Kerr, Valerie Veskovie and Steve Blackwood. He is excited to be part of the Alley and looks forward to its future. Enjoying every minute of the journey, he explains, “The noises you hear here (the construction of new studios, the voices of visitors and the train) are creation and energy.” When asked about his vision of the Alley and the area, he replies, “I see beautification projects, evening festivals, open galleries and working artists.” He also sees the importance of Artist’s Alley as a community, as he is already hosting Saturday night open galleries and inviting his fellow Alley residents to join. And they are. Neighboring studio Cloud House Pottery is regularly open and active on Saturday evenings as well. Ceramist Ian Levinson, the first artist to move onto the Alley, always welcomes visitors to stop in, say hello and stay for a while. As he explains, “The beauty of a working artist studio is that people can come in anytime and talk, learn, see and do.” He is extremely hospitable to all who peek in his studio and happy to sit visitors down at a potter’s wheel. Having started in Laguna Beach and spent time in Sedona, he is now settling in Delray Beach and hopes to see the north-

Nearby ceramist Jeff Wyman is also a part of the renaissance around Pineapple Grove and Artist’s Alley. His work studio is next to Brenda’s Birds, and features a wall lined with work, a few resident artists and a dog named Haily. Jeff is a true arts-for-arts-sake believer, describing any artist’s work as the “search for inspiration.” Having developed arts centers across the country, he is a firm believer in incorporating the whole community into an arts movement. He has been in Delray for four years and looks forward to an alliance of artists and enthusiasts who can “listen and collaborate to create” the environment so many want to make out of this end of Pineapple Grove. He also knows that it will take time, but as Vincent Cacace explains, “the energy is fostering itself.” The men and women who own space, work within and frequent this area know that time grows the greatest vines, and that overnight popularity often fades as quickly. Transforming the top end of Pineapple Grove and Artist’s Alley is going to take some effort, but many hands make light work. To support the area, walk the extra few blocks and have a sandwich or slice of pizza at Pazzo Italiano. Owner and friendliest-guy-ever Izzy Lena makes an excellent eggplant parm and takes time to not only get to know you and your family, but will also introduce you to his. Three generations can be found within the shop, as well as decades of photographs along the south wall. And stop in and say hello to Steen Stoner, the man behind some of the best skateboard designs of all time. Don’t let the name fool you; he is an avid community supporter, as well as great motivator and youth

east end of Pineapple Grove and Artist’s Alley turn into the next Atlantic Avenue. Artist’s Alley is growing by the day, and has recently welcomed Lazlo Janoska, Master Decorative Artist and regular Rembrandt lookalike. Having recently moved to Delray after spending 17 years at his San Francisco studio, his collection of hand-painted wall finishes adds yet another unique touch of elegance to the industrial edge of Artist’s Alley. Salvatore Principe will soon join the Alley, and feature his works as well as a few wines. The Linda White Gallery of Boca Raton will soon be claiming a space as well.

Lets make the most of our surroundings in Delray Beach, and at the same time, offer variety and new challenges in our fitness regimen. Have you ever thought about the millions of people around the country that would do anything to have the luxury of exercising on the beach, under the warm sun and surrounded by breathtaking scenery on any given day? The sad truth is that many take it for granted. A traditional indoor workout facility is not the only game in town. Besides the most obvious reasons to exercise on the beach, such as the panoramic view and adding diversity to your routine, there are endless health benefits for both the mind and the body. Let’s start off simple with walking or running on the sand. Both exercises are far less jarring on the joints than hitting the pavement or treadmill and will strengthen your ankles, arches and calves. You burn more calories in less time because you use more energy due to the simple fact that you sink into the sand as you walk or run. Running on the beach also increases overall balance and coordination because it activates more muscles due to the unevenness of the surface. However, if walking or running on the beach is not exciting enough for you, Delray Beach Water Sports has just the activity for you. Located on Casuarina Road and A1A, they offer an exciting and extensive list of water sports that can whip you into shape and you will not feel like you are being punished (the way some of us feel when we are exercising indoors with

by Taryn SheaLOUGHRAN machines). Time to embrace our health, get in shape and take advantage of the beautiful coastline that Delray has to offer. What are you waiting for? Ranging from $10 to $80/hour, Delray Beach Water Sports offers everything from: • Kayaking (singles and doubles) • Surfboards • Catamaran sailboats • Snorkeling (check out the 100-year-old shipwreck just off the shore!) • Stand Up Paddle Boards • Boogie Boards • Skim board • Kite surfing • Bicycles Talk about taking your fitness routine to the next level! How many people can say their city has all of those activities at their fingertips. I encourage you to visit their website to find out more information or to book your first lesson (they offer half price for the second hour of rental!): www.delraywatersports.com. As if trying something new and challenging isn’t exciting enough, check out these facts. 1. Kayaking for an hour burns approximately a whopping 400 calories while strengthening and toning every muscle in your upper body as you paddle. 2. Snorkeling for an hour burns up to 350 calories (not bad considering you will not even feel like you are working out because of the scenery!) 3. Surfing (the major benefit is strengthening your core and legs) will burn up to 300 calories an hour 4. Sailing burns up to 270 calories per hour Lastly, if running or walking on the beach is not exciting enough, and getting in the water isn’t in the cards, try a challenging game of beach volleyball with a group of friends or even tossing the Frisbee. Do not spend another day feeling like your workouts are punishments and turn them into celebrations. Get inspired by your surroundings and take advantage of what the beautiful sandy beaches and tranquil waters of Delray Beach have to offer. I’ll see you on the beach!

Osceola Park - What Park?

It's a typically beautiful Delray Sunday afternoon in February when I receive a call from a friend asking if I would like to see her new piece of art being presented in Osceola Park. It takes me a second before I reply "Osceola Park?" Wait there is no actual park...... Osceola Park is the neighborhood that runs from approximately Swinton Ave. to Federal Hwy (5th Ave) and 2nd Street South to 10th Street. This area was originally developed in the early 1900's with the actual plat being recorded in 1913. The neighborhood consists of somewhere between 500 and 600 residences, according to information provided by the Delray Beach city website. Her response is in her usual sarcastic tone, "just meet me on the corner of 3rd Ave. and 8th Street." As I arrive I can already see the cars lining up. I pull up on the side of the road by a sign that says "Art Exhibit Park Here" stuck in the ground. Living in Delray for over 13 years I have seen a lot of things, but this has me intrigued. I follow a group of people down the street to an alley where neighbors are lining up bar-b-q's and tables, at which point I notice they have even put down tarps on the floor to walk on. Taking a moment to get my bearings, it occurs to me that I have been here before, in this exact alley while showing a home a few years ago. It was full of debris and completely overgrown with vegetation. Now it looks like a wellmanicured backyard. There is artwork hung on the fences, all nicely framed and lit up. This is what I must be here to see. I find my friend Emily with a group of the neighbors. While she catches me up on the event and introduces me around, I am offered home-cooked ethnic family recipes and beverages. I am convinced that Delray Beach has the friendliest residents on earth! It turns out that the local residents had applied to the city to get the area cleaned up but there just wasn't the budget at the time. Thus a group of residents and friends took it upon themselves to clean up a property they don't even own. I truly enjoyed hearing the stories of how they pulled together to get the work done. The artists donated their time and effort to paint their art on 3 by 5 pieces of backer board. This waterproof sheet, typically used in the walls of showers and bathrooms, will allow the art to stay permanently mounted throughout the year. The event even attracted some local celebrities, including city commissioner Tom Carney, who added to the over 100 people in attendance. The local community outreach at Osceola Park has created an increased interest for property, as currently there are only four single-family homes for sale in the area. These homes vary from a quaint two-bedroom cottage listed for $119,000 to a newly remodeled 1800 sq/ft home priced at about $450,000. One thing is for sure, the residents of this community take pride in their neighborhood.
