Delray Dinner in the Sky

By Jamie Salen The Pineapple Staff Writer

You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give.” -- Winston Churchill

Delray Beach has developed a soaring reputation for its myriad of colorful venues offering the community culinary delights to match even the most sophisticated metropolitan dining districts. While our fair city has prospered since becoming a dining destination, as good old Churchill so austerely reminds us, success is truly measured by what we give back rather than by what we receive. One undisputable example of this philosophy at work comes in the form of an artsy eatery, named for the famous French art movement developed in the early twentieth century. Dada, located on the historical strip of N. Swinton

Avenue, is not only known for its delectable menu and unique ambiance, the popular spot is also recognized for its charitable endeavors as well as its unwavering support of the local arts community here in Delray Beach. Opened in 2000 by President Rodney Mayo, Vice President Scott Frielich and Head Chef Bruce Feingold, Dada was first intended as a coffee shop and artist hangout in the space now occupied by Bru’s Room. As Feingold tells it, Rodney Mayo had just left a visit to the proposed real estate sight and decided to walk to Doc’s All American for a quick burger. It was on his stroll that he spotted the nearly 100 year old house on the corner of N. Swinton Ave and 1st Street and knew immediately it Continued on page 6

Delray Beach, FL., – Delray Beach, recently voted the most fun small town in the US, also has a more serious side where fitness, wellness and a health-oriented lifestyle are a way of life for the thousands of visitors and tourists who flock to downtown Delray Beach each year. One of those visitors and now part-time resident, Bob Lipp, a business marketing executive who has promoted fitness events and enjoys an active lifestyle decided that Delray was the perfect place for a Wellness Festival. His concept, also caught the attention of former Delray mayor Jeff Perlman, and the two created WellFest Delray 2013 (www.WellFestDelray.com), an event scheduled for March 7, 2013, where the Expo will be held in Delray Beach Center for the Arts at Old School Square in the vintage gymnasium. “Wellness is an all encompassing term, which speaks to a lifestyle that recognizes the importance of staying fit, eating right, protecting the environment, and promoting mental and physical well-being, said Lipp. “It’s about feeding the body and the mind.” When Jeff and I imagined an event that would support the diverse elements of Delray Beach and build on the community’s feel good vibe, wellness just made sense.” Currently, the WellFest team, which now includes Sara Sloan, a Delray visitor and personal trainer who recently made Delray her permanent home, is talking to potential exhibitors and sponsors while considering other activities in nearby venues such as healthy cooking demonstrations, fitness and/or yoga exhibitions, expert speakers on health and nutrition, as well as exercise and meditation forums, and more. The WellFest Delray 2013 website, www.WellFestDelray.com is currently set up to provide exhibitors and sponsors with instant information on exhibiting at the Old School Square gymnasium Expo, sponsoring the Expo, or sponsoring a custom event. If you can give $100, we welcome that, as well,” said Jones. “Any amount, large or small, we welcome to be able to fulfill our mission and make our campus more enjoyable, educational and useful to the community.” The Spady Museum can accept cash, credit card and check donations. GIVING BACK - continued from page 1

was the perfect site for his newest venture. After coaxing by Feingold, the decision was made to move beyond the original coffee shop concept and use the converted home as a full scale restaurant. There are many things that set this particular eatery apart from so many others in downtown Delray Beach. For one thing, Dada is quite famous for serving their full menu until 2 am, 7 nights a week. The venue also boasts one of the tastiest menu’s in the neighborhood (my mouths waters just thinking of the famous Dada Dates). After learning of their countless works in the community, I am convinced this restaurant is much more than a fabulous menu in an extraordinary locale.

Many may not know that the place to be on Thanksgiving is not in fact crowded around the dining room table with your extended family. In the spirit of truly giving back, Dada began their own holiday tradition in which every dollar earned from the sales of their Thanksgiving feast is donated directly to feed the homeless through Joshua House and Lords Place. “We felt it was a creative way to encourage the community to do something to give back. Spending your Thanksgiving holiday at Dada is charity in itself,” explains Feingold. While Thanksgiving only comes around once a year, the very special Tata-tini provides guests with a way be charitable for the entire month of October. This very special cocktail is part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All proceeds from the inspired martini are donated to the cause. Dada will also participate in the annual Key to the Cure event held at Saks Fifth Avenue to benefit breast cancer research at Jupiter Medical Center.

What better way to encourage and support local fine artists than to provide them with a place to exhibit.” - Head Chef Bruce Feingold

Over the last year, this unique restaurant has participated in a number of other off-site charity events that bring awareness and resources to South Florida causes. This past July, Chef Bruce Feingold represented Dada and Delray Beach at the 25th Anniversary Year of Share our Strength, Taste of the Nation in Miami. The special event featured the best local chefs and their fare in order to raise money to end world hunger. Dada also participates

in the March of Dimes Signature Chefs & Wine Extravaganza each year in support of healthier babies. This month (October), Dada will be a part of the American Lung Association benefit, Savor, Sips, Suds & Spirits, held at Old School Square. They are also in the process of planning a fundraising event for Bethesda Hospital Pediatric Wing with Spa Eleven. While all of these creative charity events provide a benefit to the community, Dada has also been known to step in on a moment’s notice in support of communities around the world who have suffered a major disaster. This Delray Beach establishment donated $24,000 to Haiti after their tragic earthquake and they also donated significant funds to victims of the tsunami in Japan. While bringing awareness to great charitable causes as well as fundraising for them is admirable in itself, Dada also makes a real effort to support our community’s quest to build a lasting economy in arts and culture. Not only does the restaurant host local musicians, poets, comedians and performance artists weekly, they have also hosted hair shows and fashion shows.

“There are so many types of expressive art out there and some are more neglected than others. We want Dada to be a truly creative space and I am really proud of a lot of the artistry that has come out of here over the years,” explains Feingold. You don’t have to catch a performance to appreciate the arts at this venue. Feingold and his partners have even offered up their walls to up-and-coming fine artists in the area. “What better way to encourage and support local fine artists than to provide them with a place to exhibit,” says Feingold. What impressed me the most about this local Delray Beach restaurant is their dedication to supporting what this community believes is important. With the overwhelming success of the dining industry in downtown Delray Beach, not every establishment proves its devotion to the health and strength of our community. Sometimes with success comes complacency and it becomes easy to lose sight of those around you who are still in need. After 12 years of continued success, Dada still chooses to give back to the community and there is no doubt that it is their integrity and willingness to share that will keep them at the top.

dine out The Unknown Diner visits Dada The Food Beat.Com is Delray Beach’s very own online food network. The Food Beat produces entertaining and insightful programs that feature Delray Beach restaurants, coffee houses, bars, entertainment venues, caterers, events, and bakeries. The Food Beat is also building the most unique and powerful food and entertainment search engine, all in Hi Definition Video. It’s all food...all Delray Beach...all fun.

Editors Note: The Unknown Diner provides Food Beat viewers with the definitive approval of Delray Beach restaurants. Due to events that took place with an organized crime ring in Paris, France in 2011, he disguises his identity and refuses to speak. Despite his egocentricities and mysterious mannerisms, The Unknown Diner is revered for his discriminating pallet. When asked to write a review for a recent visit to Dada, he declined, but allowed us (The Food Beat) to view his legal pad containing the notes he took during his dining experience. We have taken those notes, and added our interpretations to provide this review. Target Restaurant: Dada 52 N. Swinton Ave, Delray Beach 561.330.3232 Open 7 days a week: 5pm to 2 am Unknown Diner: Atmosphere... Heterogeneous The Food Beat: UD recognizes Dada as a place where unique forces come together to provide a festive and somewhat “different” dining ambiance. The outdoor seating area is unlike any in the area, complete with brick pavers, trees and lanterns. The house turned restaurant is cozy with a generous dose of hip. Unknown Diner: Staff... Idiomatic The Food Beat: Apparently, Unknown is pleased with the way Dada allows its staff to be who they are. Friendly and skilled comes in a wide range of styles at Dada, thus adding to the welcoming ambiance. He did not feel out of place or feel unwelcome at any time during his visit. (This is not usually the case) Unknown Diner: Service...Bonhomie The Food Beat: Unknown thought the level of service at Dada was exceptional and gracious. His waiter, Jason, was knowledgeable, respectful and prompt. Unknown Diner: Menu... Promethean The Food Beat: He could have easily said pure genius, but his arrogance prompted the use of yet another word with an alarming number of syllables. Not only is the Dada menu diverse, it is priced so anyone can enjoy it. The appetizers often serve as a meal in themselves...the baked brie and the

Ahi Tuna Tartar are house favorites and Unknown is particularly fond of the Dada dates wrapped in bacon. Choosing his entree proved to be a conundrum. Unknown had visited Dada’s website prior to arrival and had narrowed his choices to four amazing dishes; Habanera Glazed Salmon, Crab Cakes, Desi Burger or Bea’s Meatloaf. Just before he was ready to make his selection, his waiter Jason made a most unusual suggestion. “You should really try the Butternut Squash Ravioli.” Rarely would Unknown consider a dish vegetarians would eat, but he had come to trust Jason and took a leap of faith. He wasn’t disappointed. The ravioli was tender and slightly sweet with a rich cream sauce that screamed opulent. The dish also featured freshly steamed asparagus that proved to be the perfect companion for this sensational dish. After finishing every last bite, Jason told him the dish could also be served with chicken and bacon. This too little too late information had a negative impact on Jason’s tip. Unknown Diner: Bar... Damn! The Food Beat: At last. Unknown drops his pretentiousness and tells it like it is. He has just taken his first sip of Dada’s signature Mojito, made with fresh mint and muddled to perfection. Dada has a full bar and the finest Mojito’s and Long Island Ice Teas in north America. Unknown Diner: Intangibles... Fanciful The Food Beat: Unknown loved the fact that Dada serves its full menu until 2:00 AM every night of the week. He was also impressed with the nightly entertainment ranging from live music to poetry. Unknown Diner: Bottom Line... Fork up. Way up. The Food Beat: The Unknown Diner highly recommends Dada. Log on to www.thefoodbeat.com to see the Unknown Diner’s visit to Dada. Make sure you stick around to the end to hear the incredible ghost story as told by Dada management.

BUDDHA SKY BAR TO EXPAND TO THREE FLOORS

A

tlantic Avenue’s only rooftop dining experience will soon offer guests a brand new view: from the first floor. Buddha Sky Bar is expanding their infamous Asian Fusion restaurant to 10,000 square feet with a threemonth renovation that includes the first and second floors of 217 East Atlantic Avenue. To be completed by early November, the new first floor space, aptly titled “Buddha Garden,” will allow the restaurant to serve more Buddha fans than ever. “After being open for just over a year and seeing the amount of success and devoted customers we’ve attained, we felt as though this was the perfect time to take Buddha Sky Bar to the next level,” said owner, Christopher Licata. “We want to enhance the guest’s experience, give them something new and continue to exceed their expectations when it comes to unparalleled cuisine and one-of-a-kind atmosphere.” PDT International is the design company behind Buddha Garden. Their plans for the space include a new sushi and sake bar, waterfall and living walls. Buddha Garden will also offer indoor and outdoor bars, including one that opens up to Atlantic Avenue. Guests can expect more of a late night lounge feel on Fridays and Saturdays as well. “Nature inspired the design of this Chinese-Japanese fusion restaurant, where many details are tied to one of the four elements of nature: Earth, Water, Air & Fire,” said Senior Designer at PDT International, Joy Lynskey. “Red, gold and chocolate combine with textural materials of Asian

influence to create a warm environment that coordinates with the Buddha Sky Bar upstairs while allowing the Buddha Garden to have its own special identity.” In addition to the 96 seats that the intimate third floor currently holds, Buddha Sky Bar’s second floor will be open for private parties, hosting 110 people in total. There will be customizable conference rooms available with direct access to multimedia, leaving the space open to corporate or holiday events from groups of 8 to 60. Buddha Sky Bar prides itself on providing an exceptional experience for parties of any size and look forward to the expansion of their corporate event offerings. Buddha Garden will seat 120 guests and offer a completely different atmosphere than Buddha Sky Bar, while serving the same cuisine that earned them Open Table Diners’ Choice Awards for Top Asian Restaurant in Southeast Florida and Palm Beach County Hot Spot. “We’ve got some incredible staff and a concept that you can’t find anywhere else in the area,” General manager, Damian Burke said. “It’s the same great experience and food, but the expansion will offer guests minimal wait time, if any at all.” Second floor renovations are expected to be complete by the beginning of October, while Buddha Garden will be finished by early November. For more information on Buddha Sky Bar, visit www.BuddhaSkyBar.com.

dine out Follow a local fave: “Christina’s” By Christalyn Warner The Pineapple Staff Writer

D

elray Beach local Christina Betters, owner of Christina’s Restaurant in Pineapple Grove, has kept her momentum through all of Downtown’s many changes. The consistency in her point of view over the years has earned her the local following she has today. Christina’s breakfast and lunch niche is exactly what Delray needs, as is obvious by the steady stream of patron’s through her doors. Her history may surprise, being that she is on her fourth Delray location to date. Christina’s Greek heritage and family background of owning diners has made the grueling restaurant industry somewhat like home for her. You can see her heritage strewn about her menu, Spanikopita with Greek Salad and Avgolemono soup are just a few menu items that infuse Greek flavors and pay homage to her roots.

Having lunch at Christina’s is a sure treat. I love the California veggie melt and her soup is to die for. The lemony chicken soup has such depth. Where else can you find a soup that people come in for when they are under the weather? Some of Christina’s customers have a longstanding history of coming in for the Avgolemono when their children aren’t feeling well. And breakfast at Christina’s is always Fantastic. The Egg White Omelet with spinach, tomato and feta is my personal favorite. I don’t know how she does it, but I order that omelet often and it is fluffy and perfect every time. The Twilight Burrito, eggs and cheese wrapped in a flour tortilla and served with sour cream and salsa, simply amazing. And for the sweet tooth who loves morning pancakes and french toast, her Banana Cinnamon Nut French Toast will send you over the moon. Right about now you might be asking

yourself, what is Christina’s history? Well before the Christina’s we now know and love on 2nd Avenue in Pineapple Grove, Christina was once the head server at Peter’s Stone Crabs. This is where she got her start on Atlantic Avenue, and for those of you who have a long running love affair with Atlantic Ave., you know that Peter’s used to be in the location where Gol! Brazilian Steakhouse now resides. After her long stint at Peter’s, she then moved onto her first restaurant venture. This café was in the location of the Atlantic Starbucks next to The Office, named Twilight Café. For those of you who don’t know, it was a small café serving breakfast, lunch and Italian style dinner on the weekends. After spending what were a few years at Twilight, Christina then moved over to Gleason Street Café near the beach. She took over the already established business and maintained it long enough for people to walk into Christina’s and still talk about some of the Gleason Street fare. Like the cashew chicken salad, which can be found on her menu even today. With the success of Gleason behind her, Christina decided to go a little bit bigger. An idea was born, in that little pocket on the east side of 2nd Ave., where Solita’s and House of Siam are Located. This is where the original Christina’s first opened. It was located next to Solita’s when it was Kyoto, that delicious restaurant with amazing sushi. The original Christina’s is where her menu really took shape and her signature dishes flourished, like the Avgolemono soup, the California Veggie Melt, and those deliciously fluffy omelets. Her loyal breakfast and lunch crowd know these signature dishes well. When it comes to consistency, she is on it. Breakfast has to be one of the most difficult meals to execute properly and she does it with finesse. There is a lot to be said about a woman who owns her own restaurant and cooks in it everyday. Christina has a lot of heart and passion for food and it shines through in each delicious bite. After five years at her original location, Christina felt her restaurant was a little too big for her liking. She closed her restaurant and after a little hiatus, the New Christina’s was built, in the little shopping plaza in Pineapple Grove. Where the mimosas are always delicious and the coffee cups have great sayings. This restaurant has charm and food you can count on being cooked to perfection every time you come in. May Christina’s stay for a long time. . . her food is just that good!

Art Works 4 Food “Augmented Reality” art fundraiser Proceeds to be used to help feed healthy food to at-risk children in Palm Beach County.

DELRAY BEACH, FL. – On Wednesday, October 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Max’s Harvest in Delray Beach, Art Works 4 Food will be the first not for profit organization in Florida to utilize Augmented Reality to bring art to life while also bringing the awareness and funds needed to fight the children’s hunger epidemic in Palm Beach County. In recognition of National Food Day and in support of the organization he founded, Anthony V. Pugliese, III, will merge one of his own paintings into a new reality – Augmented Reality. This will be one of the first Augmented Experiences in Florida. Augmented Reality, a cutting edge technology, is the layering of digital information onto real life objects and places. These digital content layers are then viewable with computers or smartphones and may take the form of text, video, or images. According to Pugliese, “This new technology blurs the line between what’s real and what’s computer-generated by enhancing what we see, hear and feel. Guests who join us at Max’s Grill on October 24th will experience my artwork in a new reality and get a chance to help feed the children in our community who go hungry each and every day.” Pugliese encourages attendees to download the free app at www.artworks4food. org and to bring their iPhone, iPad or Android, as this is an interactive art event. Event attendees will also be treated to delicious food and drink, which is taken to the level of its own art form when prepared by Chef

Chris Miracolo of Max’s Harvest in Delray Beach. “Max’s Harvest is proud to support the efforts of Art Works 4 Food on National Food Day and hopes that their efforts will bring awareness of the nationwide celebration and movement for healthy, affordable and sustainable food,” says Miracolo. Palm Beach County has witnessed a nearly 200% increase since 2009 in the number of people receiving food stamps and more than 50% of its children are on a free or reduced lunch program. One in three households with incomes less than or equal to $35,000 ran out of food before they had money to buy more. Many of these children have diets consisting of cheap, salty, overly processed packaged foods, high calorie sugary drinks and “fast” foods made of white bread, fatty grain fed factory farmed meat and french fries. Art Works 4 Food works to supply these children access to nutritious food. Through their programs of serving over 5,000 healthy snacks this past summer to local organizations and an upcoming partnership with C.R.O.S. Ministries to create a ‘Nutritional Knapsack’ program which will feed school children healthy alternatives on weekends during the school year, Art Works 4 Food has just begun to make a difference. Tickets ($30 advance/$40 event day) may be purchased online at www.artworks4food. org or by calling 561-454-1616. To learn more, volunteer or sponsor an Art Works 4 Food program or event, please contact Executive Director Roz Gatewood at 561-271-8102 or rgatewood@artworks4food.org.

How safe is marijuana, really?

A DELIA WEISS, M.D.

fter decades of widespread casual use, and now after a number of states legalizing use for “medicinal purposes”, the use of marijuana has increasingly become perceived as safe. Is this perception accurate, or is it a fantasy that has been fostered by nostalgia, urban folklore, the drug culture, and the multi-million dollar dispensary industry? Let’s take a step back and try to take in the whole picture. It is important to understand that a number of recent trends have greatly affected the risk profile of marijuana. The first major change involves the rising concentrations of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The levels of THC currently seen in higher grades of marijuana are 40 times greater than the levels seen in the late 60’s (Woodstock pot is a common reference point). This is the direct result of advanced growing and procurement techniques, which have systematically increased the levels of THC in “professionally” raised marijuana. Most people see this as a positive result of applied botanical science. The problem here is what is called the “dose effect”. As the potency of this drug increased over time, a number of thresholds of toxicity have been exceeded. A good analogy would be a comparison to beer. One beer will not due much to cause injury to an adult. Four to six beers would cause a significant degree of inebriation in the average individual. Forty beers consumed at once however, would cause alcohol poisoning and probably death in many cases. Marijuana has not become a common direct cause of death but has become a significant cause of major psychiatric complications including depression, anxiety and most alarmingly psychosis. The anxiety and depression problems resulting from THC consumption are nothing new, but they are much more common now. The psychosis severity and frequency is something that is a more recent development though. I personally have treated 14 cases of THC induced psychosis in just the last

3 years. Many other addiction specialists have had similar experiences. The psychosis consists of intense auditory hallucinations, paranoid delusions, and a number of bizarre behaviors that are completely out of character for the individual. The condition resembles Schizophrenia but is usually more difficult to treat. Some of these cases may very well be Schizophrenia that was triggered by the THC, but the total number of cases exceeds the usual incidence of this disease and they all follow heavy pot use. Most of these individuals are not even addicts, just recreational users. All who have suffered this complication have experienced a major decline in functional capacity, often becoming permanently disabled. The prognosis for this condition is very poor. Similar presentations can result from contaminated marijuana. The intentional contamination of marijuana is another growing trend among the purveyors of illicit substances. Many drug dealers spike their marijuana with more addictive drugs, such as cocaine, crystal meth and heroin, to create cross-addictions to substances that generate higher overall profits. Aside from creating these crossaddictions, the contaminants cause a number of other major complications such as seizures, tic and movement disorders, depression, anxiety and psychosis. When complications develop, it is often difficult to distinguish if the cause was the THC or an undetected adulterant. Sometimes the extra ingredients can be detected on a drug test. Many other chemicals such as formaldehyde are frequently added and also cause neurological complications. In addition to all of the neurological problems caused by THC, a host of psychological consequences have arisen from all of the recent trends. The legalization of marijuana in some states has fostered a perception that the drug is very safe, especially among adolescents. I have had

by Dr. Raul

Rodriguez countless Florida teens tell me openly “yeah but pot is legal”. This has led to more experimentation at an earlier age. The young human brain that is not fully developed is exquisitely sensitive to the negative effects of drug use. The increased early marijuana use in turn has facilitated more experimentation with more addictive drugs. Experimentation with addictive drugs reliably leads to addiction in many cases. The net result is a worsening of the nation’s drug problem, especially among the younger generation. The surge in drug use has been so prominent in Palm Beach County that the Delray Center For Healing has developed and launched a new outpatient drug treatment and relapse prevention program for adolescents to address this growing epidemic. This information is relevant to all segments of the population, but will most likely be received by parents and grandparents. If you are a parent or grandparent, it is important to realize that the marijuana you may have tried in the past was very different than what is available now. Your experiences did not carry the same risks that your children and grandchildren face today. It is important to understand the differences when discussing this topic with your family. Regardless of what your opinion of marijuana use actually is, it is of greatest importance to base that opinion on the most complete foundation of information that is available to you. destinations McENROE RETURNS TO LEAD ATP CHAMPIONS CHARGE IN DELRAY BEACH

Wilander, Moya, Philippoussis also playing in newly-formatted event

DELRAY BEACH, FL – John McEnroe is returning to Delray Beach to play in the newly-formatted ATP Champions Tour event that features six stars playing a round-robin event over three days. The iconic McEnroe will be joined by Mats Wilander, Pat Cash, Carlos Moya, Mark Philippoussis and Aaron Krickstein in the ‘legends’ field at the 2013 Delray Beach International Tennis Championships (ITC) held February 22 - March 3. A Moya vs. Krickstein and McEnroe vs. Cash doubleheader on Friday, February 22 will kick off the 21st annual ITC, which features the only ATP Champions Tour event in the US and the only one in the world to be played alongside an ATP World Tour event. “Our fans never tire of seeing Johnny Mac,” says tournament director Mark Baron. “He is a magician with a tennis racket in his hands. The amazing skills that you see in him and players like Mats and Pat are the reason people of all ages keep coming back.” McEnroe and Wilander, each winners of seven Grand Slam singles titles and members of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, are both returning to Delray Beach after playing in the ITC’s first two ATP Champions Tour events. McEnroe was the runner-up to Patrick Rafter in the inaugural tournament in 2009. Moya (2012) and Philippoussis (2011) won the last two Delray Beach ITC events and are the top two players on a Tour where players are ranked based on points compiled across a global schedule. Cash, the 1987 Wimbledon champion, and Krickstein have played in all three ATP Champions Tour events that have been held in Delray Beach. Krickstein, the director of tennis at St. Andrews Country Club in Boca Raton, reached the final in 2011.

Under the new format, the Delray Beach ATP Champions Tour event now includes include eight matches - there are six roundrobin matches played in two player groups that lead to a 3rd/4th playoff match and a championship match, both scheduled for Sunday, February 24. The Saturday (Feb. 23) lineup will include the ATP Champions Tour’s current top-ranked players, Moya vs Philippoussis, and a featured match-up between Hall of Famers McEnroe and Wilander. The legends are forever linked by their 1982 Davis Cup quarterfinal - the longest Davis Cup match in history - in which McEnroe outlasted Wilander in five sets over six hours and 32 minutes. “The players are really excited about the new format,” says Baron, who moved the ITC to Delray Beach 15 years ago. “It helps them give our fans a peak performance every time they take the court.” The ITC’s ATP World Tour event, which holds its qualifying tournament during the ATP Champions Tour event, has early commitments from world No. 11 John Isner and No. 23 Mardy Fish in its singles draw and the world No. 1 Bryan Brothers as its topseeded doubles team. To celebrate these champions coming to Delray Beach, tournament officials have extended their US Open promotion. From Sunday, Sept. 23, 8:00 am - Monday, Oct. 8, 11:59 pm, ITC tickets will continue to be available for up to 50% off. To purchase tickets call 561-330-6000, order online at www.YellowTennisBall. com or in-person at Walmart’s Ticketmaster outlets or the Delray Beach ITC box office (open Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, 561-330-6000, 30 NW 1st Avenue, Delray Beach, FL 33444). ave you snorkeled a 100 year old ship wreck? Have you been on a Hobie Cat or sailboat recently? How about paddleboarding or kayaking? All this and more is available right here at Delray Beach Watersports. Located along the South side of A1A, this company has established itself as Delray’s premier location for fun on the beach. Delray Beach Watersports, owned and operated by Albert Richwagen, was an integral part in showing USA Today and Rand McNally’s Best of the Road team why Delray Beach is the Most Fun Small Town in America. They treated our visiting travelers to the best Delray has to offer, from sailing the crystal waters of the Atlantic to snorkeling the 100 year old ship wreck just twenty feet from shore. Richwagen helped Delray show it’s true colors, which incidentally are varying shades of turquoise and aquamarine. Unbeknownst to many Delray residents, this company has transformed the beach experience. Walking towards their alcove on Casuarina Road and A1A can only be compared to stepping into a Beach Boys music video. A thatched roof tiki umbrella casts shade over relaxing beach chairs next to the rental stand. This is where it all begins. From surfing, paddle boarding and boogie boarding to windsurfing, kayaking and snorkeling, they truly have it all. Delray Beach Watersports also offers a Surf Camp, a fantastic way to learn a new skill while enjoying some of the most beautiful landscapes in Florida. They also offer sailing or hobiecat lessons.

One aspect of this beach paradise that cannot be overlooked is the friendly and well-versed staff. They provide beach goers with everything from safety information to the most opportune time of year to try each of their stellar activities. Nothing is more evident than these employees fervent zeal for beach life, and this is clearly illustrated in their desire to share all Delray Beach has to offer.

Gumbo Limbo’s Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Facility Opening

BOCA RATON, FL – For the past two decades, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center’s Sea Turtle Conservation team has rescued sick and injured sea turtles throughout southern Palm Beach County. In January, 2010 efforts were stepped up with the opening of their Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Facility (STRF). The STRF was temporarily closed in August 2010 to make modifications and improvements to the filtration system. Now the STRF will once again be open to visitors. “We look forward to having Gumbo Limbo visitors learn about the sea turtles under our care and the injuries they are dealing with,” says Manager, Stefanie Ouellette. “They will also learn simple steps which they can take, such as properly disposing of trash, to help prevent injuries to sea turtles and other wildlife.” Earlier this summer, the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission granted Gumbo Limbo Nature Center’s STRF a temporary permit allowing the treatment of sea turtles again. Sea Turtle Rehabilitation

Coordinator, Ryan Butts, is enthusiastically taking on the challenge. “We immediately received a juvenile green sea turtle in need of care. Over the past three months we have received four more green turtles and one loggerhead turtle. One of the green turtles was released back into the ocean a few weeks ago, the ultimate goal of rehab.” Over the summer, visitors to the Nature Center were often able to get a peek at the sea turtle patients resting in special tanks adjacent to the Sea Tank Pavilion walkway. Starting this past September 28, visitors are able to visit the STRF and talk to staff and trained volunteers about the sea turtle patients. Set on twenty acres of one of the only remaining tropical hardwood hammocks in Palm Beach County, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is an environmental education experience for all ages. Located at 1801 North Ocean Blvd in Boca Raton, the Center is open 7 days a week, 361 days a year. The suggested donation of $5 per person supports all aspects of the Center. www.gumbolimbo.org

destinations THE GIRL’S U-PICK

A strawberry time machine By Jordan Coyne Special to The Pineapple The best kept secret of Delray Beach? We have a time machine. Some said it couldn’t be done, others whispered of distant possibilities, but just North of Atlantic Avenue on Military Trail lies a hidden gem that immediately transports all who enter to the era of Happy Days and penny candies at the general store. This place, this beacon of a simpler time, is The Girls Strawberry Patch.

by the seemingly endless assortment of old fashioned candy. The sweet memories continue with their extensive list of mouth watering homemade ice cream, but the must have is nothing other than traditional strawberry shortcake. Served with heaps of whipped cream, this dessert can certainly be shared, but who would want to? Just when it seems as though the experience is over, all signs point to the rear exit, the strawberry patch. The doors open

by the Milagro Center Stars During this past month of September, the Milagro Center STARS explored the living value of “Respect”. Here, in their own words, is what the kids said about the meaning of “R-E-S-P-E-C-T”: “Helping your mom because she might be tired.” - Brianna “Saying sorry for the bad things you’ve done and being nice.” - Alex “Never poking someone in the eye with a pencil.” - Nikacie “Listening to your mom and dad, auntie, nanny, and teacher.” - Cashalie “Helping someone with something they can’t do by themselves.” - Karlebe “Being respectful is speaking without using bad words.” - Carlos “When you show respect for someone you are being good.” - Christopher “Being respectful is treating others the way you want to be treated. Cleaning up for each other even if you didn’t create the mess!” - Aylin “If you give respect, you get respect.” - Kayla “Showing respect is keeping your hands to yourself.” - Brandon

The Girls Strawberry Patch is nestled in an assortment lot of locally owned venues, quiet and humble. A passerby may even pay no mind to this small piece of Delray culture, but they would be sorely mistaken. Upon entering The Girls your senses begin to run wild. Colorful visuals dart the eye from one keepsake to the next while the nose is trying to absorb the tantalizing and ever present aroma of strawberries. You’ve hit the mother-load. Further inquiry into the sights and sounds of The Girls reveals everything form small modern day trinkets to retro lunchboxes. Meandering through the store, listening to the likes of Dion and The Platters, fills every shop-goer with a sense of nostalgia that is only heightened

to a magical mixture of fresh off the vine fruit and exotic animals that plasters on a smile you cannot shake. The expansive plot of land is truly unexpected and takes most every visitor by surprise. Although strawberries are a seasonal fruit, The Girls offers fresh mangoes, papayas, avocados and more. Their collections of exotic birds will leave you speechless, but try to prepare a few talking points because some love a good chat. All in all, a visit to The Girls is a step back in time, a simpler time when the summer nights were endless and smelled of heavenly strawberries. “The Wildest Uniforms in high school football” Sports Illustrated

The Atlantic Community High School football team made national news recently with their new uniforms designed by Delray Beach creative firm, FuturisticWoo. “This is just the first step in assisting Atlantic High with marketing and exposure” states FuturisticWoo founder Ryan Boylston. The project came together in just three short weeks, with the support of several local businesses. The Law Office of Lee Philip Cohen P.A, Ocean Properties Ltd., The Related Group, and Saxena White P.A., were engaged by members of Delray 21 and jumped at the chance to assist Atlantic Community High School. With new businesses already calling the offices of FuturisticWoo looking to sponsor additional uniforms/sports, who knows what the school will unveil next. “We’ll continue to donate our time building an attractive program for sponsors, as long as they (Atlantic) are willing to take a few risks” Boylston says with a smile.

FROM WALL STREET TO WATERWAYS Alex Warner of Gulfstream Boat Club By Stephanie Immelman Special to The Pineapple Alex Warner has a pretty interesting back story. After a brief stint in pro baseball in his early 20s he decided college might be a better idea and enrolled at Lynn University. After going out on Atlantic Avenue one night he immediately moved to Delray and “fell in love” with this town. This is a similar refrain

I hear from many people who have moved here. They don’t just love Delray, they fall “in love” with Delray. After University, Alex was offered a job on the floor of the US Stock Exchange in New York City for Bank of America. He was right at the epicenter of the international finance industry. However, he remembers, “every day on the subway, amongst the herds of Wall Streeters, I was daydreaming about Delray Beach.” So Alex came back home to Delray with a thought to developing a boat rental business. He was thinking along the lines of Net Jets, an airline company that hires out private jets. He wanted to bring this concept (hours of boating time) to the luxury boating industry. Gulfstream Boat Club sells memberships starting at 16 hours for $1000. This gives regular people the ability to participate in a wealthy person’s sport. Alex explains, “Young professional can join a boat club but they don’t have the time and money to own and maintain their own boat. Enjoying the water is one of the greatest things that south Florida offers. If you don’t get out on the water, it’s like living in Vail and never skiing.” In addition to memberships, the Gulfstream Boat Club also offers half day or full day rentals, fishing charters, scuba diving and trips to the Keys and the Bahamas. They will even do an evening sunset cocktail cruise. “Basically, we do anything on the water” says one of his captains, Justin Jordan. All this didn’t come easy. Alex always loved the boat business but realized he needed to learn it from the ground up. After

moving back to Delray he approached Pat, the owner of Marina Delray for a job. After working on Wall Street, he agreed to start at $10 an hour cleaning the bathrooms and scraping the barnacles off the boats in the marina. “It wasn’t easy”, laughs Alex, “but my mindset was always on the big picture.” One year later he asked Pat if he could start a boat rental business and the answer was yes. He started with 2 boats and 10 customers and now, 4 years later, he has 10 boats and 100 members. They have also expanded their business to Two Georges in Boynton Beach and more expansion is on the way. In addition to life on the water, Alex loves art (he spent a semester in Florence, Italy doing photography) and his ‘boat dog”, Luna, a chocolate lab. “I love being a part of a community like Delray. There are so many people here that have pride in our town and a passion for making Delray incredible.” It seems like Alex is first among them. GULFSTREAM BOAT CLUB

an interview with Anthony V. Pugliese, III

THE RIGHT

MIX By Ed Maass The Pineapple Staff Writer

Anthony V, Pugliese, III

The Pineapple sat down for a chat recently with Anthony V. Pugliese, III CEO of the Pugliese Company of Delray Beach, a South Florida real estate developer. Pugliese is an avid art collector and philanthropist. Recently, the idea of combining the two passions emerged and a great concept was born: Art Works 4 Food. Through Art Works 4 Food, Pugliese hopes to bring together emerging artists, established artists, art galleries and collectors to donate their creations, time, and resources to help feed children in need. An artist himself, Pugliese will be leading the way by providing 100 paintings (painted by him) for sale in various art galleries around Florida. One hundred percent of the sales proceeds after third party sales commissions and expenses from art sales will be donated to Art Works 4 Food. Pineapple: For people who don’t know who you are, can you tell us a little about your company? Pugliese: The Pugliese Company’s main focus is in raw land development dealing in commercial, industrial and residential properties. We own and manage close to 2 millionsquare-feet of industrial, office and self-storage in Florida and New Jersey. I started out in the building business when I was 17-years-old. Pineapple: We understand in August 1999 you bought an old blighted, two- acre property (an old Winn Dixie) on NE 1st Street and 2nd Avenue to develop the first Pineapple Grove commercial project. Pugliese: Yes, Delray has always had its own special thing; with connectivity and a hometown flavor. From my viewpoint even though the property was in a blighted area I knew it would one day come into its own because of its close proximity to all the action on Atlantic Avenue and 2nd Avenue. In 2001, we built our Corporate Offices and a 30,000 Square-foot Retail store, Creations. I guess we must have done something right because we received an award from the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) for our Development at 101 Pineapple Grove Way in Delray Beach. Pineapple: Tell us about your non-profit organization, Art Works 4 Food that raises awareness and funds to provide healthy food to the growing number of homeless and hungry Palm Beach County School Children. Pugliese: Clearly hunger is an issue around the world, but what completely shocked me was the fact that here in affluent Palm Beach County there is a growing number of homeless and hungry children. Since 2007, we have had an 83 percent increase in Palm Beach County school age child homelessness. In the past two years a 66 percent growth in poverty in our School Districts, and 61 percent of school children are now receiving free or reduced lunch programs. These “food insecure” children not only demonstrate higher health and behavioral issues, but what is really worrisome is that the school drop-out rate is five times higher. These children, for the most part, only have access to processed foods filled with sugar, fats and salts. Clearly not the right body and brain food they need to have a chance to succeed. Pineapple: Can you tell us about the Art Component of your new charity, Art Works 4 Food? Pugliese: My concept is to raise some necessary funds for the Healthy Food Programs by selling my artwork and other artist’s work. I painted 103 original paintings over several years, and I did that as a way to bring awareness to this issue. We are looking for young talented children, professional and amateur artists who want to donate art work and receive a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the art. The rest will be donated to Art Works 4 Food. Pineapple: We hear you are launching a new technological format, “Augmented Reality” at your fundraiser that will take place on October 24th in at Max’s Harvest. Pugliese: Both art and technology have been of major interest to me, so it seemed like a natural progression for me to incorporate it into my artwork. Augmented Reality merges the virtual and physical worlds through the use of technology. It combines the real and virtual worlds with interactive and real-time images that are 3D. It’s very intriguing - just bring your Smart or IPhone. To learn more about Art Works 4 Food, and the fundraiser visit www. Artworks4food.org. or contact Roz Gatewood, Executive Director @ 454-1616 or 561- 561-271-8102

To begin lets tune into WIIFM, No… not a new station found on your radio dial, but simply an acronym that most people utilize each and every day of their lives, WIIFM: What’s In It for Me. The short answer, should you choose to continue reading, might just be a bit of insight and knowledge that could help you to achieve your financial goals. Whether it’s mixing cement, baking a cake or building an investment portfolio, it’s the right mix that determines the outcome. The right mix equates to allocating and diversifying your assets in different investment vehicles. Unfortunately, for many, asset allocation is the investment equivalent of flossing your teeth (most know we should do it), however for some reason we don’t. Asset allocation is synonymous with diversification, but diversification is a relative term. Many investors may believe they are diversified, yet they probably have not implemented a real asset allocation plan. True asset allocation looks at the full scope of investment alternatives, which may include stocks, bonds, REITs, hedge funds, commodities, money market instruments, and other investment alternatives. The underlying concept of asset allocation tells us that whatever the market environment brings forth, some of these investments should be advancing or at least holding steady while others are declining in value. It is important to note that a properly allocated portfolio will not offer the

Behringer Harvard begins construction of luxury multifamily development Behringer Harvard has commenced the construction of a 180-unit multifamily development project on approximately eight acres in Delray Beach. “This was a compelling opportunity to build a multifamily community in an exceptionally desirable location with strong demographics and proximity to employment centers in West Palm Beach and Boca Raton,” said Mr. Mark T. Alfieri, Chief Operating Officer of Behringer Harvard Multifamily REIT I, Inc. The general contractor is LandSouth Construction of Jacksonville; the architects are STB Architects & Planners of Dallas and Richard Jones Architecture of Delray Beach. The luxury multifamily community, called The Franklin Delray, is being constructed at 1206 South Federal Highway in Delray Beach.

The Franklin Delray will be comprised of seven three-story residential buildings with a free-standing clubhouse and amenities building. Averaging 1,035 square feet, the apartments at The Franklin Delray will be built to condominium-quality specifications and offer up to three bedrooms and two baths. Units will feature granite countertops, brushed nickel hardware, stainless steel appliances, tile backsplashes, ninefoot ceilings, private balconies and full-size washers and dryers. Common-area amenities will include a rotunda community room, cyber cafe, business center and library, children’s activity zone, and state-of-the-art fitness center. Outdoor living areas will feature a resort-style pool with cabanas, a children’s playground, a barbecue and lounge area with fire pit, water features, and bicycles available for use by residents. The portfolio of Behringer Harvard Multifamily REIT I, Inc. includes investments in 47 multifamily communities in 14 states comprising 12,575 apartment homes.

explosive growth and fireworks of a narrowly invested one; however it will hopefully minimize the total risk in the portfolio and thus reduce the chances of severe and disappointing losses. Television, radio, newspapers and other media often paint with a broad brush when it comes to investing. The stock market (Dow Jones Industrial Average) is up or down and the bond market is stagnant – end of story. Usually however, it’s not that simple. During any given market environment, some stocks are usually rising while others are falling. Quite often trends emerge, and rising and falling stocks will fall into distinct asset classes. If you’re serious about building a well diversified asset allocation plan, you should consider the pros and cons of investing in the various major stock asset classes, including small cap and large cap, value and growth, foreign and U.S. Similar thinking also applies to different types of bonds, REITs and other investment alternatives. If you don’t want to short-change yourself and your future net worth, you need to be aware of these different asset classes and make sure that you include them in your investment portfolio. While I might be dating myself I will leave you with a verse from a Rita Coolidge song, “Too often opportunity knocks, but by the time you push back the chain, slide back the bolt, unhook the lock and turn off the burglar alarm, it’s too late.” You have a potential opportunity to help yourself become a more successful investor so don’t let it pass you by. And above all, if you need help, ask for it! Ed Maass is a Certified Financial Planner, Chartered Financial Consultant, and Chartered Life Underwriter. To qualify for the list, companies chose to participate in a survey by Best Companies Group. Randomly selected employees answered anonymously to questions focused on eight themes including leadership; culture; job satisfaction; work environment; their relationship with supervisors; training and development; pay and benefits; and overall engagement. According to Florida Trend, the publication focused on hiring practices and the ways that companies attract top talent to form its list of the best companies to work for. “Nothing matters more than how you go about hiring,” said Mark Howard, the magazine’s executive editor. BMI Elite prides itself in hiring qualified individuals who share a passion for exceeding client goals. BMI Elite is a rapidly growing company that was noted on the list for hiring 22 new full-time employees over the past year. Some of the perks that its employees enjoy are an office arcade, potluck lunches, happy hour social events, company bowling tournaments and free breakfast on Fridays. “Receiving this award is truly an honor,” said CEO Brandon Rosen. “We have built one of the fastest growing, creative, online marketing companies in the industry, and we are very proud to have done this in Palm Beach County.” Headquartered in Delray Beach, Florida, BMI Elite is a full service digital advertising agency and affiliate network that leads the industry in performance-based marketing initiatives. For more information contact Casey Kurlander at 561-330-6666 x317 or caseyk@bmielite.com CITY TO COMPLETE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT SURVEY WITH DUKAKIS CTR. The City of Delray Beach has entered into an Economic Development Partnership with the National League of Cities (NLC) and Northeastern University’s Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy to promote local economic development. Through this partnership, the City will participate in the Economic Development Self-Assessment Tool (EDSAT), which will analyze our municipality’s economic strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats regarding its ability to attract new businesses while retaining and growing existing ones. The EDSAT was developed for use by municipal leaders to help identify local characteristics that affect a municipality’s potential to increase private investment. In March 2010, the National League of Cities (NLC) and the Dukakis Center formed a partnership to offer the EDSAT to its member cities as well as training and other resources

related to economic development. Delray Beach recognized this as an opportunity to improve the perception of our City as a business friendly and viable corporate destination, grow sustainable and livable wage jobs, encourage entrepreneurship (both new and existing), and increase the City’s tax base. Once the EDSAT is completed, the results will be tabulated and published on the City’s website, www.mydelraybeach. com. ARTS GARAGE SELECTED AS ONE OF ONLY FIVE NOMINEES TO WIN THE FIRST PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD BY KNIGHT FOUNDATION

Vote for Arts Garage, text “2” to 305-767-2200 before October 22

South Florida’s coolest cultural hub, Arts Garage in Delray Beach was selected as one of five organizations to compete for the Knight Foundation People’s Choice Award for up-and-coming cultural organizations. As a way of bringing more attention to innovative emerging groups, Knight Foundation is asking the public to vote by text for their favorite of the five. The organization that receives the most votes will get $20,000 in unrestricted funds to use for a project. “So much of the exciting art in South Florida is at the ground level. We want to make sure everybody knows about these groups and the work they are doing to engage people through the arts,” said Dennis Scholl, Knight Foundation’s Vice President/ Arts. The only organization selected from Palm Beach County, Arts Garage has swiftly established a solid reputation as “the place” for diverse programming that includes live jazz, blues, hip hop and classical music, as well as original theatre and visual art exhibitions. More importantly, Arts Garage is providing a stage and a voice for emerging regional artists of all disciplines to flourish. “Not only are we thrilled to be nominated for this outstanding gift,” said Alyona Ushe, Executive Director of Arts Garage, “we are also humbled and honored to represent our county, and especially Delray Beach, in Knight Foundation’s prestigious people’s choice award competition.”

Alyona Ushe of Arts Garage and Stuart & Shelby’s Chuck Halberg get busy texting their votes.

Since its inception, Arts Garage brought to our region a roster of extraordinary talent. From internationally renowned to emerging artists, a wide array of disciplines and programming can be experienced at any given week at Arts Garage. “We owe our success to remarkable talent living and creating in South Florida and culture lovers who believes in our vision and appreciate the intimacy of our venue. This win would give us the support and endorsement to build on our progress and keep our artistic dreams prospering. We appreciate every vote, and every text does count!” said Ushe. Knight Foundation has launched the contest to bring attention to the exciting art happening on the ground level in South Florida and to invite people to participate in the selection process. The contest is part of the Knight Arts Challenge, which is investing $40 million in bringing South Florida Arts together. HI THERE, MY NAME IS DEL-IDA, WELCOME HOME

Oh, here he goes again dragging me in with catchy titles that have nothing to do with the story. Hah not this time. So who, or what, is Del-Ida? Well if you are going to call yourself a local you will have to familiarize yourself with this beloved historical districts just north of downtown. Originally platted in 1923, Del-Ida Park Historical District runs from NE 4th Street to George Bush Boulevard and is cradled between Swinton Avenue and the train tracks.

Wait a minute, I think I have seen a sign with that name on it. Now you get it! Placed there by the city in 2009, it serves to offer a summary of the area’s history and rests on NE 2nd Ave approximately seven blocks north of Atlantic Avenue, just before you get to the light. The historic district itself compromises 58 acres, with approximately 150 structures. Roughly one-third of these homes still maintain the original Mediterranean Revival Style introduced to the area by one of our first general contractors, Frederick Henry Link. Here’s a little local trivia. Mr. Links’ daughter, Catherine Link Strong, went on to become Delray’s first woman mayor in 1954.

What I find really interesting is that even though Del-Ida Park is considered a “planned development’ there are many odd shaped lots with varying street frontages caused by the diagonal running side streets. Definitely not your typical cookie-cutter neighborhood. Ok, you sold me - how do I live in DelIda? Well, you better move quick. Currently there are only two homes available in the area according to the local MLS. Both homes were built in the early 1960’s and are right around the 2,300 per square foot range. One of the homes resides on famed Swinton Avenue and has an asking price of $499,000, placing it just above $230 per square foot and features a large yard, pool, and inviting circular driveway. The other is in the dual-zoned area (you can live or work here) on 3rd and has an asking price of $399,900 which is just shy of $170 per square foot. Both homes have maintained their gorgeous historical exterior appearance while being meticulously updated inside. Delray Beach bringing history, music, art and the beaches all together. No wonder its America’s “most fun small town”.

“. . .Then Jack Happened” Welcome to ”...Then Jack Happened”, the new advice column written by me, Jack. I grew up reading all of your favorite advice columns, hoping one day to get a crack at my own, and now here we are. This is going to be a lot of fun, certainly for me and hopefully for you.

The first question has to be, “who is this Jack chump to be giving advice?” My credentials are understandably fair game. Anticipating this issue, I researched the backgrounds of several syndicated advice columnists to decipher what separated all of us from them. I can cheerfully report that the answer is this: very little to nothing. They are people, women usually, with bachelor of arts with some sort of writing background, that have penned articles called “Water Birth and You,” “Soup Spoons: Underrated in the 21st Century,” or “How to Dump Your Boyfriend and Begin Dating His Roommate, the Hot One.” They occasionally come from rough backgrounds and sometimes they are blue bloods. I am almost there. I am a 31-year-old single fellow with a bachelor of the arts in English that has yet to write an article about uteruses, formal table etiquette, or love problems, but I promise to whip something up once “...Then Jack Happened” gets off the ground. Importantly, I am capable of reading and writing sentences. I’m neither a rough kid nor a fancy boy, but I can handle myself comfortably in most social situations. So - who can ask questions? Anyone. What kind of questions will I answer? Almost any question I find interesting, and more importantly, any question you find interesting. This column is the readership, you are its support system and authors. I am a proactive bystander. This excites me because you readers have endless possibilities, contrasted to my numerous limitations. As far as the tone and language, I won’t be going blue, I got the vocabulary for it but want to keep the column reasonable, helpful, and considerate. I won’t be obscene for the sake of obscenity, because that is boring, but I will be honest and straightforward. We will crack some jokes and enjoy some poetry. “...Then Jack Happened” is for fun, interest, and the human condition. I am excited to start and look forward to your questions, problems, and stories so, please, write in and we’ll get going. Question: I’m about to turn 30 and although I’m not all that bent up about it like most—I am going to miss the “Wow that’s impressive for someone in their ‘20s!” So I guess my question for you Jack, is What do I have to accomplish in my ‘30s to get someone to crow “Wow that’s really impressive for someone in their ‘30s!”? Answer: Happy birthday and welcome to the ‘30s club, I have been a member for over a year and its fantastic. I have interesting patches of hair, bags under my eyes, and my downslopes are faster than my up-slopes. Still, I feel great. Your attitude about turning 30 is positive, but it would serve you better to extend it further. Because you impressed in your ‘20s you must have enjoyed some type of success in your life, which is a wonderful thing. Although it is nice to have those successes recognized, your successes and goals must align with your personal happiness and satisfaction or else the outside validation is meaningless. I’ve always equated success/impressiveness with happiness, and you probably won’t be happy unless you follow your personal passions. What good is managing the world’s largest spittoon conglomerate at 32 if you are unhappy doing it? You should accept that you’re the only one running in your race so its important to run as hard as you can, and although you are inconsolable when you inevitably don’t win, you are brightened that you didn’t lose either. By satisfying your personal goals regardless of outside influence, you’ll be happier and more complete. That is impressive in of itself, regardless of what age you are and who is patting you on your back. It’s just you. Or drive a Lamborghini into the Atlantic, but I’m coming along for the ride! If you want to learn more about Jack (me) jump onto www.delraypineapple.com/jack or please feel free to get to know me better through a letter of recommendation from an old boss (whom I detested).

Shopping etiquette to buy by

T

By Rigel Herman The Pineapple Contributing Writer

his month in lieu of my usual question and answer column, I’ve decided to address an issue of personal importance, Shopping Etiquette. High Season is upon us and the stores will soon be filling up again, with lines for the fitting rooms, waits to check out and, inevitably, some cranky shoppers and sales clerks. Working in retail is, for the most part, wonderful, and I have made friends with many of my customers. However, there are things that frankly drive me bananas in my line of work. After discussing the subject further with colleagues and doing some online research, it seems I’m not alone in my frustration. And the same things tend to bother us all. The bottom line is that shopping should be a pleasure. But in order for that to be fully realized, the experience should be mutually pleasing for both the customer and the sales clerk. Here are some rules to shop by. And while I’m sure that you’d never do these things, consider this a friendly reminder before you head out to make your next purchase. 1. Be polite I was recently shopping in Manhattan at a well-known, high-end shop that I will refrain from naming. I was in the store for over 20 minutes and the two giraffe model-type girls working on the floor hadn’t so much as blinked at me. They were completely “unaware” of my presence and were instead focused on taking pictures of each other in various poses for, I assume, Facebook. I left soon after, annoyed and empty-handed. Point being, you should always expect to be greeted and acknowledged when walking into a store. That being said, a response is appreciated. Ignoring a “Hello” is quite rude in any setting and can set the precedent for the rest of the visit. Beginning with a pleasant rapport is the best way to ensure an enjoyable experience. 2. Bathrooms Most boutiques do not have public restrooms. Yes, department stores have bathrooms, but most boutiques have limited space in the back, often an office, stock room and storage in one small area. The restrooms therefore are most likely unglamorous and are reserved for employees only. Don’t be offended by a refusal to let you go, it’s not personal and I’m sure that there’s (almost always) a Starbuck’s near by.

3. Children I shopped with my mom all the time as a child. Her mantra to me was, “look with your eyes, not with your hands.” If, on the off chance I wasn’t being angelic, and I was touching things or misbehaving, we left immediately. We don’t mind your kids in the store, but seriously, they have to be on their best behavior. Crying, screaming, pulling clothes off the racks, crawling on displays, foot stomping….not okay. As a general rule I would say to reserve actual shopping trips, when you’re looking for new jeans, for example, for a kid free afternoon. If you’re popping by to browse or say hello, kids are cool, but they lose patience quickly and quite frankly, so do we. 4. Discounts It’s really never okay to ask for a discount. Let me first make a few exceptions, though I stand by my first statement whole-heartedly. If you find that an item on the floor is damaged, point it out to the sales person. In the event that it is the only one and you are willing to take it as final sale, a discount will most likely be offered and if not, it’s okay to ask for a percentage off. If you work in a nearby store and there is a courtesy discount generally given, you may ask if the store you’re in participates. However, in both instances, the shop owner or sales person is free to decline. Simply asking for a discount because you want to pay less isn’t okay. Most stores have sale items and asking if something is on sale is fine. But choosing your items and then trying to haggle the price is just plain rude. If the owner of the store or sales clerk is able to offer you a discount, they will, and I can guarantee they’ll be more inclined to do so if you’ve been polite and haven’t behaved as though you deserve a discount simply because you’re you. 5. Returns/Exchanges Boutiques generally operate differently from large department stores and their policies on returns and exchanges are probably somewhat less lenient. Understand the rules where you’re shopping before you make a purchase. Because stores are required to have their policies displayed, claiming ignorance while trying to return something most likely won’t be effective. Arguing with a sales person about the store’s policy is also probably not going to work in your favor. And I hate to even have to mention this, but I do, wearing or altering a garment and then trying to return it . . . never okay. 6. “High” Prices When walking through a store, if you find that the prices seem high, that’s fine. But please, keep that to yourself. It is impolite and offensive to scoff at prices, or say things like, “this skirt isn’t worth x dollars?!” or “I could get this at Target.” Perhaps you’re not familiar with the lines carried at the store you’re in. Asking polite and respectful questions is, of course, okay, and even welcomed. Just don’t say, “Why is this so expensive?” because that just sounds silly. 7. Making a Mess It is the job of a sales person to keep the store looking clean and nice. That means re-folding things, rehanging things and such. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s okay to unfold every shirt in the store and leave them in a ball. It also doesn’t mean leaving things you’ve tried on in a pile on the floor. It’s disrespectful to treat things that don’t belong to you that way. In closing, remembering the adage, “you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar,” is a good rule of thumb when shopping. In my experience, people respond so much better to someone who is polite and nice, rather than aggressive, pushy and rude. Most people working in retail enjoy what they do and love what they sell and sincerely want to help. And having good manners and proper etiquette is always in fashion.
