Traveling Vietnam wall arrives this week BY PAT SUNDERLAND Managing Editor

On panel 54 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, you’ll find the name of Edmond Alexander Jablonsky Jr., who died in Vietnam May 3, 1968, leaving behind his wife Pat and a 19-month-old daughter. He is still missed after all these years, says his wife Pat, who is now remarried and living in Delta. Shortly before his death, he and his young family enjoyed R&R in Hawaii. It was a bittersweet reunion, filled with angst about the uncertain future Ed faced in Vietnam. But while there, they received word that Ed, a career Army officer, was to be moved from the DMZ to serve as an aide to General Creighton Abrams. He was on the helipad at Camp Carroll, Vietnam, en

route to Saigon, when he and his first sergeant were hit by an enemy round. He was picked up by helicopter and taken to a field MASH unit in Qwang Tri, where he had time to write a letter home assuring Pat he was just slightly wounded. “I’m having surgery in the morning, but I’m okay,” he wrote. Unfortunately he died on the operating table. Back home in Texas, Pat was still suffering from jetlag after flying home from Hawaii with her 19-monthold daughter. When the front doorbell rang, she had no clue of the devastating news she was about to hear. “When I opened the door that morning, and looked through the screen door and saw polished patent leather shoes, I slammed the door shut,” she recalls. Edmond died at the age of 24, “as a result of a need-

less and pointless conflict,” Pat says. “What a waste of life and his many talents.” Pat says she has always been a supporter of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, even when opposition mounted against the undergraduate architecture student who won the design competition. “The creator was Maya Lin, whose

family was from China,” Pat says. “Many Americans objected to an Asian having anything to do with the wall. It was very emotional ... so many Vietnam vets who thought the idea was just horrible were angry and bitter.” Despite the controversy, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is today one of the most

Court puts a halt to pot dogs BY KATHARHYNN HEIDELBERG Montrose Press

Police must have probable cause for a search other than the simple alert of a K-9 that is trained to detect the odor of marijuana, the Colorado Supreme Court decided. In Colorado, marijuana is legal in small quantities for people 21 and older; thus, a dog trained to detect it, could be alerting on a legal activity when it is deployed for an air-sniff, the court’s May 20 ruling held. The decision will have only limited impact in the 7th Judicial District, however. Here, new police K-9s are trained and certified in narcotics detection, not to detect the odor of pot, and the one dog with such training is slated to be retired later this year. That dog, Oxx, now works for the Delta County Sheriff ’s Office, along with a second, younger dog, Roo, which is not trained to detect marijuana. “The plan is to retire Oxx this summer or fall and then

bring Roo in, so we’ll have a few months that we’ll have to work through this decision,” Delta County Sheriff Mark Taylor said. “Just like anything we do, it’s going to take more investigative work than in the past. A dog trained to alert to marijuana just can’t be used to establish probable cause that a crime has been committed.” That means deputies who request the K-9 will have to establish other probable cause for a search, he said. The May 20 ruling upheld a court of appeals decision that suppressed the evidence supporting the drug convictions of Kevin McKnight. According to the ruling, in 2015, Craig police saw McKnight’s truck parked the wrong way in a one-way alley near an apartment. Medical marijuana store clears planning commission BY PAT SUNDERLAND Managing Editor

Upon the recommendation of the Delta Planning Commission, the city council will consider a conditional use request for a medical marijuana sales license at 25 Stafford Lane, Unit 3. The planning commission conducted a public hearing on the matter at its June 3 meeting. The applicant, John Thomas, was present on behalf of his business, Green Meadows Health Products. Also in attendance were three staff members from Yes! Dental, which is adjacent to the proposed site of Green Meadows Health Products. Betsy Suerth, City of Delta public works/utilities director, discussed the location of the business, which falls within parameters established by Delta City Council. She said performance standards have been addressed with adequate protections for noise, smoke and dirt. All products are in sealed containers that emit no odor, she added. State officials and the Delta Police Department have reviewed security precautions and have found

Construction contract finalized The county commissioners have signed a contract with Stryker and Company of Montrose in the amount of $2,440,739.31 for the design/build of the Human Services Building. It’s expected to take about a year to complete the building. Design/build provides more flexibility and permits design upgrades within the amount of the contract as the building progresses. Soil condition will inform the design of the foundation. Furnishings, cubicles and any abatement needs will become a part of the design as they are identified. The commissioners noted that decisions can be made as conditions become known, negating the need for a lot of expensive change orders. At this stage of the design, it is anticipated that the county attorney, district attorney and probation will also have offices in the Human Services building when it is completed.

A public notice was published in the Delta County Independent on May 15, and a sign was posted at the site prior to the public hearing. For medical marijuana establishments, Delta City Council established 1,000-foot setbacks from schools, parks, churches and other facilities. Thomas told the commissioners he closely studied the resulting zoning map, and after looking north and south of town, he settled on the site on Stafford Lane, which he found to be well-lit, safe, easily accessible, and just down the road from the oncology center. His brief comments were followed by an impassioned plea for a more suitable location from Dr. Nathan McNight of Yes! Dental. Green is the predominant color of his business’ logo, and will also be used extensively, along with a medical cross, by Green Meadows Health Products, an unfortunate coincidence that could be misleading for the customers of his “legitimate”

medical facility, he said. Concerned his brand may be “defamed,” he said he’s determined to fight the location of Green Meadows Health Products “with every legal resource I have.” He admitted a personal bias against marijuana, but said he’s most concerned about negative impacts to a business he’s spent his life developing. Dr. Paul Dodsworth, who is also associated with Yes! Dental, questioned commissioners about the reasoning behind the 1,000-foot setback from schools. If there is a legitimate concern, he said the same setback should apply to Yes! Dental, which sees a large number of young patients. The practice is unique in that it serves Medicaid patients of all ages, so it draws clientele from a huge area, Dr. Dodsworth said. After finding the conditional use request complete and in compliance with city regulations, commissioners voted unanimously to forward the request to city council. Council will take up the matter on Monday, June 17 (the meeting has been rescheduled from Tuesday, June 18).

SBDC moves to Montrose

The Colorado Small Business Development Center (SBDC) has named Region 10 as its new west central host organization, serving Delta, Montrose, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Ouray and San Miguel counties. The new office will be included under Region 10’s Small Business Resource Center (SBRC), which includes a business loan fund, small business training and consulting, and the administration of Enterprise Zone tax credits. Nancy Murphy, Region 10’s Small Business Development director, has been named the new west central SBDC director. “Region 10 is honored to have been chosen to host the west central SBDC,” said Region 10 executive director Michelle Haynes. “The associated funding that comes with hosting the SBDC will allow us to push out our programming and SBDC consulting into the far reaches of our area by leveraging our established partnerships and creating satellite locations throughout the region.”

LETTERS Hotchkiss, Crawford deserve high speed internet Dear Editor: Few communities in this country have 1 gigabit internet, but parts of Delta County enjoy this level of fast internet. In fact, from the research I’ve done, Delta County is one of the best-connected counties in Colorado, and it is all due to Elevate, the creation of our member-owned Delta-Montrose Electric Association co-op. With matching grants from the state’s Broadband Deployment Board, DMEA has brought lightning-fast internet to 16,000 of its 33,000 electric-meter households. But hooking up the next 17,000 customers is turning out to be a battle. Recently, I purchased a commercial building in Hotchkiss. I decided to invest in part because I found out that DMEA had an approved grant for $759,585 from the

Broadband Deployment Board to bring high speed internet to Rogers Mesa. DMEA would have matched that dollar for dollar. But soon after, TDS asked the Broadband Board to deny DMEA’s grant. The Broadband Board, made up of TDS’ corporate allies such as the president of AT&T Colorado, then revoked the grant to DMEA. Here is one of the legal arguments TDS made to persuade the board to do this: DMEA would be overbuilding an existing robust copper internet system. According to several Rogers Mesa residents I talk to, its claim of a robust system is laughable. Pauline Carr, a long time resident of Rogers Mesa, told me that she’s had to get used to her phone full of static. “But wait until it rains — you

We have both made use of the DCMH Urgent Care facility, and each time we have found this facility and its staff very professional, friendly, skilled and caring. We are fortunate to have such a facility and

great staff. We do hope that all in the community will take notice and make sure of the facility if urgent care is needed. The medical attention available is not limited to a sore throat or cut to finger needing stitches; they offer a variety of procedures and services far beyond such activities. Hotchkiss (and Crawford) deserve the same reliable fast internet that has served greater Paonia so well. I’ve now met all sorts of people who have brought money and jobs into Paonia precisely because of DMEA and Elevate. When Delta County loses a grant it goes to another rural community. They win what we lose. I’d like to hear from people in places waiting for Elevate. Is TDS serving you well? How is that service? I know TDS did a repair in Hotchkiss that involved bypassing their aging copper lines with nine tall microwave towers (that greatly annoyed neighbors). Aside from that, does anybody notice TDS trucks leaving their garages for anything but simple repairs? Finally, TDS: Are you invested in growing our community or will you keep dragging us down? A grateful veteran Dear Editor: While decorating the family plots in the Cedaredge Cemetery, a young lady with three young children came up to us. She wanted to know if any of the graves were of veterans or if I was a veteran. I told her that I was a veteran and had served in Germany. They all thanked me for my service and then the children handed me a small Ziploc filled with homemade cookies signed “Thank you” on the side. That’s what I call a true Memorial Day! This young mother was teaching her children to honor those who have sacrificed and what is great about this country we are privileged to live in because of those sacrifices. the Sherlock Holmes tale at the Delta Performing Arts Center at 822 Grand Ave. Two evening performances start at 7 p.m.; a matinee is scheduled Saturday, June 8, at 2 p.m. The opening night was the first of many plays to be offered by the AC Theater Group, which is already planning the next play for late August or early in September. “Watson: The Last Great Tale of the Legendary Sherlock Holmes” went off without any major problems with a cast of nine and was directed by Shaun Morgan, a teacher at Delta Middle School. The three main roles of the play were Watson, played by Stacy Healy, Sherlock Holmes by Bryce Heinecko and Professor James Moriarty by Shaun Morgan. I was amazed at the lines they had to memorize to do this play! Interaction of the players was wonderfully carried out without any errors that I noticed. The other cast members were Dana Blade playing two parts of Sigmund Freud and Queen Victoria, Karen Cline playing the part of Miss Irene Adler, Rhiannon Schroeder playing Mycroft Holmes and Audrey Herren playing Mary Morstan Watson. All these parts went off very well and again parts were not a problem. All the actors participated in stage fights and use of props to help sell

the story line. Madalyn Sandridge, Kylee Wilber and Audrey Herren were stagehands who played an interesting part of the play and story. Clever use of the props and stage crew went off perfectly. A bit of riding the train, a hot air balloon, a buggy and even horses were portrayed by using props and acting skills. At one point, one of the young actors even did three different characters in a dialogue with different voices and was accomplished with her changing hats. With some former experience of acting but mostly with first-time performers, this play was far better than I thought it might be. Actually, for the first performance I was impressed by the acting, the lines memorized and the special effects created to carry out the play. I believe that the cast and crew pulled off a major accomplishment opening night and really show promise for plays to follow! Please be aware that AC Theater is now a part of the Delta scene and we wish them well. We hope those of you who wish to act or have done some acting in your past will sign up to be a part of AC Theater. I never knew what it took to put such an event on until I got involved and I’m so glad I did. It’s challenging but so rewarding to see months of hard work come together in the smiling faces of friends, neighbors, and those who were strangers before the event; but are no more. Voter fraud must be punished Dear Editor: It is disheartening to realize that there will probably be massive voter fraud in our 2020 elections. Illegal immigrants in Colorado can now get driver’s licenses by showing a Social Security number (whose? Many have been stolen!), proving 24 months residency, and swearing that they will apply for lawful presence when eligible. Then in 2019, Colorado passed Automatic Voter Registration. This forced voter registration (will the next step be a requirement to vote, as in many communist countries?) will register to vote anyone who applies

for a driver’s license or renewal (even online), or identification card, or Medicaid. That person must provide unspecified “documentation of citizenship.” Will a driver’s license (see above paragraph) be sufficient? And if not, how many will slip through the cracks anyway, accidentally or intentionally? The registrant’s county clerk will (hopefully) review records, (hopefully) confirm citizenship, and send the elector a notice. If he does not decline the registration or the post office does not return it within 20 days, he is registered. I foresee activists with voter rolls

descending on neighborhoods and “helping” people, who may not even be interested in voting or understand the language or the ballots, to vote. According to Judicial Watch’s Election Integrity Project, almost 60 percent of Colorado counties already have more registered voters than adult citizens. Only Michigan has more counties with dead, missing, or fraudulently registered voters. Voter fraud is a crime and a national disgrace. Both drivers (the only occupants involved) were transported to Delta County Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. Deputies performed a compliance check at a hemp operation in the Eckert area. A possible burglary was reported at an address on 1900 Road near Delta. The complainant identified a suspect, Zachary Hooker, who was arrested on outstanding warrants. Investigation determined Hooker had not entered the home or taken any property. Suzanne Baker of Delta was charged with speeding (10-19) over after a traffic stop in the 18000 block of F Road. May 30: Deputies took a report of a cold sexual assault of an atrisk adult. Deputies assisted the Cedaredge Police Department with a potential juvenile runaway. The female was located nearby at a family member’s house and it was determined the incident stemmed from a child custody situation. May 31: As a result of a traffic stop, Kenneth Gallob of Hotchkiss was taken into custody on an active arrest warrant, driving under restraint and other traffic offenses. A burglary was reported at an address on 1500 Road, Delta. The property owner returned home to find the front door kicked in, consistent with forced entry. A TV, Xbox and firearms were missing. The case is under investigation. A Cedaredge area resident reported the theft of her riding lawnmower and two cans of gasoline from her garage while she was away. At 6:30 p.m., deputies responded to a traffic accident in the 2000 block of 2100 Road near Delta. Both occupants were treated on scene for minor injuries. Colorado State Patrol handled the investigation. The assistance of the K-9 team was requested at a onevehicle, no-injury accident at the intersection of Highway 92/Highway 65, Delta. Joel Marchington of Delta was arrested by the Colorado State Patrol. June 1: Deputies responded to Delta County Memorial Hospital for a OHV accident victim with a possible broken leg. It was determined the accident occurred on Sawmill Mesa Road in Montrose County.

Among the dignitaries expected for the opening ceremony are keynote speaker Cork Powell, a Vietnam veteran and recipient of two Purple Hearts. At 3 p.m., Thursday the 75th anniversary of D-Day will be observed. This day marks the beginning of the Battle of Normandy, which resulted in Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control during World War II. The ceremony will conclude with a flyover of a World War II vintage aircraft. The Commemorative Air Force, Rocky Mountain Wing, will then land the plane at Blake Field in North Delta, where rides will be available for a fee Thursday and Friday. Following a POW/MIA ceremony at 4:30 p.m., veterans and their families will be treated to a barbecue in the Lions Club Pavilion at Confluence Park. This event is free for veterans, but tickets are required. They’ll be available all day Thursday at the hospitality tent. The Salute to Armed Forces Festival continues Friday, June 7, with a remembrance ceremony at 10:30 a.m. This solemn event will be repeated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 8. The names of those still missing in action in Vietnam will be read, followed by a 21-gun salute. At 10:30 a.m. Saturday, a veterans’ poker run starts at Harley Davidson in Grand Junction. The Old Spanish Trail Cache In Trash Out (CITO) event Sunday, May 26, was a success. Led by Katy and Karl Schwinn, 10 geocache enthusiasts cleaned up the parking lot and surrounding area of the Wells Gulch pullout northwest of Delta. The group chose that area because of its connection to the historic Old Spanish Trail.

Measles cases surge to 25-year high The United States has experienced the highest number of people infected with measles in 25 years. Fortunately for Colorado, there has only been one documented case. For Delta County, records indicate that 89 percent of school children have received the recommended Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine. This is below the 95 percent immunization rate advised by Healthy People 2020 to prevent an outbreak. Delta County Health Department would like to remind everyone that vaccinations can prevent illness and save lives. Vaccine hesitancy (i.e., lack of confidence in vaccines, perceived value, and convenience) is the number one reason why parents do not vaccinate their children or delay their child’s needed vaccinations. People who were vaccinated prior to 1968 with either inactivated (killed) measles vaccine or measles vaccine of unknown type should be revaccinated with at least one dose of live, attenuated measles vaccine (MMR). A killed measles vaccine, which was available in 1963-1967, was not as effective. People born before 1957 are likely to have been infected naturally and therefore are presumed to be protected against measles, mumps, and rubella. However, if someone was born before 1957 and belongs to certain high-risk groups, they may need MMR vaccine or other proof of immunity. Measles infection is a

serious illness. Serious complications can occur in all age groups, but complications are most common in children under age 5 and adults over age 20. Complications range from pneumonia to encephalitis. Prior to the MMR vaccine 450-500 deaths related to measles infection occurred annually in the U.S. People infected with measles often don’t recognize the early mild flulike symptoms as being associated with measles. However, they are contagious and can easily spread the disease to others by the time the hall-

mark red rash appears. If you have concerns that you may have been exposed to measles or have symptoms, please contact a health care provider as soon as possible. To limit exposure to others, do not go inside a doctor’s office, urgent care or hospital unless instructed by your doctor. Delta County Health Department has highly trained professionals willing to answer any questions about vaccines and help parents make the best decision for their children. 1994 with her husband, Monte, who was an experienced photographer. The officer believed McKnight’s passenger was someone who had previously used meth and requested the Moffat County Sheriff ’s Office K-9, Kilo, for an air-sniff. The dog signaled an alert and police discovered a pipe with methamphetamine residue in a storage compartment in the truck. McKnight’s defense team later attempted to have the pipe suppressed, arguing it was obtained through an unconstitutional search — because marijuana is legal and the dog was trained to alert on that, not just on narcotics. Even a hint of the weed could trigger the same response from the dog as methamphetamine, the May 20 ruling says. “And that’s where things get tricky,” the majority justices wrote in the decision. “After all, the possession of an ounce or less of marijuana by someone 21 or older is legal in Colorado, following the passage of Amendment 64, even though such possession remains illegal under federal law. “Thus, no matter how reliable his nose, Kilo can now render a kind of false positive for marijuana. He has been trained to alert to marijuana based on the notion that marijuana is always contraband, when that is no longer true under state law.” An air-sniff itself “arguably” intrudes on

Guzman proposes to facilitate Tri-State’s renewable transition Guzman Energy has announced that it has made a large-scale, transformative, economic proposal to Tri-State Generation & Transmission Association. The proposal consists of a substantial cash infusion into TriState designed to finance the accelerated retirement of nearly 50% of Tri-State’s coal capacity not already slated for early closure, putting it in quick compliance with recent legislation while maintaining reliability and simultaneously lowering costs to members. Guzman would replace the retired coal generation with a new portfolio that is in excess of 70% renewable. If implemented, this proposal would lower Tri-State’s costs immediately, enabling Tri-State to provide significant savings to members without sacrificing reliability or Tri-State’s system control. Additionally, the Guzman proposal provides substantial financial assistance to communities negatively impacted by the early retirement of coal plants, to be driven by engagement directly with those communities

and other local partners. The proposal also contains flexibility for Tri-State to increase the renewable energy selfgeneration cap, allowing members to make more energy investments into their own communities. Advancing the proposal further will require collaboration between Guzman Energy and Tri-State over the coming months, working in parallel with upcoming rulemakings associated with recently passed legislation in Colorado. Guzman presented the proposal to senior TriState staff, who agreed to evaluate the structure but postponed consideration until after implementation of the New Mexico laws and the completion of the Colorado rulemakings, sometime late next year at the soonest. With this announcement, Guzman kicks off an effort to engage directly with Tri-State members and communities to identify and explore opportunities to further the goals of this proposal. “Rapidly changing economics, combined with new carbon reduction goals in states that include the majority of Tri-State’s

members, mean there’s a lot at stake for those who own and are served by Tri-State,” said Guzman Energy president Chris Riley. “We’ve put a proposal on the table that would help Tri-State and its members lower costs right now while simultaneously reaching compliance with new laws. We look forward to taking the proposal directly to Tri-State’s owners and facilitating an open and transparent dialogue.” Guzman Energy chairman Leopoldo Guzman said, “No matter what ultimately happens, the cooperative system will be better off having had an open dialogue about a matter that will affect their members and communities for decades to come.”

The ruling will not affect the Montrose County Sheriff ’s Office K-9 program, or a similar one in place at the Delta Police Department. The agencies’ dogs, respectively, Tigo and Raico, are not trained to alert on marijuana. “Tigo is not marijuana-certified,” Montrose County Sheriff Gene Lillard said. “He is strictly narcotics — cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin. He is not certified in marijuana detection.” The same is true for Raico, DPD spokeswoman Jamie Head said. “We deliberately and intentionally chose a dog that was not trained for marijuana. That was part of our prerequisite in looking for a K-9,” she said. Tigo and Raico are also trained in tracking. “He is a narcotics dog and also a tracking dog. We can use him for people who are lost,” Lillard said of Tigo. Raico has already been used to find and apprehend suspects. “He is triple-trained. He does the free-air sniff in detection of narcotics and illegal substances. He is not trained to sniff out marijuana. He is tracking-trained and he is bite-takedown trained,” Head said. Like DPD, the MCSO deliberately sought a dog not trained in marijuana detection. “It would not do us much good to have a marijuana-sniffing dog, except in the schools (for locker sniffs),” Lillard said.

Program features ‘Unsung Heroes of Astronomy’ Black Canyon of the Gunnison Park Ranger Gina Poulson will present “Unsung Heroes of Astronomy” at the June 18 meeting of the Black Canyon Astronomical Society (BCAS). The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Lions Clubhouse, 602 North Nevada Ave., Montrose. Poulson will talk about individuals who have made significant contributions to the body of astronomy knowledge, yet remain widely unrecognized today. Also, she will discuss the importance of the moon in maintaining a stable environment for the Earth. The moon, often forgotten or dismissed as mundane,

reasonable expectation of privacy; therefore, that intrusion has to be justified by some degree of suspicion that a crime has occurred, the ruling also indicates. The Colorado Attorney General’s Office contended that marijuana is still illegal federally and, in many circumstances, also illegal at the state level; therefore, Kilo’s sniff was constitutional and justified. However, the majority justices held that a sniff from a drug-detection dog trained to alert to marijuana is, in fact, a search, because it can also detect lawful activity — an ounce or less of marijuana by a person old enough to possess it. Further, there must be probable cause that an item or area has an illegal drug before a K-9 trained to detect marijuana can be deployed for an air-sniff. “Because there was no such probable cause justifying Kilo’s search of McKnight’s truck, the trial court erred in denying McKnight’s motion to suppress,” the majority opinion says, in affirming the court of appeals’ earlier decision to vacate McKnight’s conviction. “We conclude that, under the totality of the circumstances, there was no probable cause justifying the use of Kilo to sniff McKnight’s truck or the subsequent handsearch of the truck and exclusion of the pipe is the appropriate remedy for this violation of the Colorado Constitution,” the ruling states.

One of them took place on Friday, May 17, during a ceremony to hand out Vanguard Growth Awards. Over 200 nominations for Vanguard Growth Awards were received from staff, parents, and learners. Learners were nominated for their growth in a variety of areas including academics, character, and social-emotional skills. Each nomination included not only the area of growth, but speciﬁc examples of how the growth is exhibited. U.S. Air Force Airman Dustin C. Newman graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Newman is the son of Tanya and Jared Newman of Montrose. He is a 2018 graduate of Vision Charter Academy.

What is the thread that will connect a room full of perfect strangers in the back of CB’s Tavern on Thursday, June 13, at 6:30 p.m.? Toastmasters International! Black Canyon Voices, the local Delta Toastmasters club, will host an open house. The public is invited to come and experience what a Toastmaster meeting is all about. Grab a bite to eat, enjoy a beverage, or just observe. CB’s Tavern is located at 334 Main Street in Delta. Doug Speedie and Bill Crawford, both members of the club, will give a speech, followed by club members demonstrating each of the roles of a regular meeting. This includes constructive feedback, impromptu speaking, while staying within given time frames and, most of all — having fun. “I’ve seen Toastmasters make a tremendous difference in the lives of

people, including me. It took me months to work up the courage to make that first visit,” said Gina Rone, a new member who moved to Delta recently. “It’s difficult to do something that you are really uncomfortable with. “Toastmasters is nothing like high school or college speech classes,” Rone added. “If you were uncomfortable in classroom settings, consider Toastmasters. If you loved speech class, also consider Toastmasters as a practical way to take your skills to the next level. You are provided with feedback to help you improve, not a grade. There is always a way to participate as a speaker, listener, or evaluator.” Through self-paced educational programs, Toastmasters can help shed the fear of public speaking, while gaining organizational and leadership skills that help members progress in their professional

and personal lives. Most importantly, it provides an ongoing opportunity to practice and learn at your own pace with others who share an interest in improving. Toastmasters meets you where you are. The cost for membership is less than a latte per week, which is hard to beat. Concert features classic Americana Paul Chamberlain will perform at the Cedaredge Chapel of the Cross on Thursday, June 13, at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation. Chamberlain, whose heritage is Cherokee, Choctaw and Chicasaw Indian, is also known as Three Bears. He has been part of the American music scene for over 40 years. He warmed up concerts for several recording artists in the 1970s and performed at Caesar’s Palace and the Sahara in Lake Tahoe in the 1980s. New owner has big plans for Highway 92 quonset BY PAT SUNDERLAND Managing Editor

Kevin Lee is investing in the future of Delta with the purchase of the old quonset hut formerly occupied by Odyssey Roofing. He recently appeared before the Delta Planning Commission and Delta City Council, seeking a zoning change for the property at 520 Highway 92 to allow outside storage of equipment associated with his business, SBS Inspections. In addition to that company, which provides power line inspections, he and

his wife own the Jungle Gym Fitness Center in Olathe and the Fuel Rise and Shine Coffee hut at the rear of the car wash on Highway 92 in Delta. The request for a change in zoning from B2 to B-3 was approved by Delta City Council and will become final on second reading in early June. Rezoning of the property reflects a city council priority of being business and builder friendly. In a written summary for the planning commission, Lee said he purchased the property in September 2017 and has

since spent a considerable amount of time and money removing trash, clearing away weeds and erecting a chainlink fence to secure the property. Then, after several attempted break-ins of the buildings and the fenced area in the rear, he installed motion security lights, surveillance cameras and internet security monitoring. Lee said he’s been interested in the property for some time. “We had considered moving to Grand Junction in our next venture, but Delta is our home and we decided we want to be part of Delta’s exciting new growth potential,” he said. “The potential with this particular property is very exciting considering the Highway 92 frontage and the fact that the huge piece of property on the north side of 92 is prime for development and growth.” He said he and his wife have discussed some exciting options for the quonset hut that could include retail space and an internet coffee café. The back of the property will be used for parking and storage. Lee said he is ready to immediately begin revamping the quonset hut to give it a welldeserved facelift. “Nothing happens by magic and I foresee this as a yearlong project, but given the opportunity we will add a shining point to an area that’s long been considered an eyesore of the

community,” he said. The quonset hut was one of five properties considered by the city for blight remediation. The city eventually turned its focus to West Appli-

DCMH employs technology to extend care to rural patients Delta County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) has partnered with Health Recovery Solutions (HRS) to launch a remote home monitoring program to increase access to care for rural patients. Delta Montrose Home Health is the first health care provider to partner with HRS to provide telehealth and remote patient monitoring services on the Western Slope. Delta hospital’s home remote monitoring program will extend care to high-risk, chronic care patient populations such as COPD, CHF and diabetes as well as post-sur-

gical patients. Delta aims to utilize HRS telehealth platform and remote patient monitoring software to not only extend care to rural communities but to enable patients to stay in their homes, safely, for as long as possible. Delta Montrose Home Health director Herbert Grigat shared his excitement for the program stating, “This is not your traditional telehealth. The devices connect wirelessly to the tablets and enable patients to easily track their blood pressure, oxygen saturation, heart rate, weight, and more. The HRS software also includes educational videos, daily surveys, and medication reminders to engage patients and educate them on their conditions. Patient metrics and data are seamlessly uploaded to the Delta Home Health clinician’s dashboard to provide continuous monitoring. Case managers will be available to monitor high-risk patients and provide 24/7 support. High-risk alerts from patient tablets will trigger an immediate call from case managers to determine the severity of patient status and the next steps in treatment. As part of its commitment to serve as many patients as possible, Delta will utilize the video conferencing platform to reach patients in surrounding rural areas while reducing nurse time, in-person visits, and costs to patients. Additionally, Delta will explore the use of three-way video conferencing to engage referring physicians to take part in the patient and RN virtual appointments. A critical part of Delta’s home remote monitoring program will be communication between DCMH case managers and hospital physicians. Physicians will receive 30-day patient summaries including pain level information, patient compliance, and caregiver involvement. Comprehensive patient overviews from case managers will provide referring physicians with a comprehensive overview of a patient’s status and build upon DCMH’s care continuum. “Remote monitoring offers our community a timely response to impending changes in their health at an affordable cost. Family members and patients will take comfort in knowing that they are being monitored continuously and support is always available,” stated DCMH’s chief clinical officer, Jody Roeber. Keep an eye out for bike riders BY ROBBIE WINNE Staff Writer

Next week folks should keep an eye out for bicycle riders as participants of the Ride the Rockies come through Delta County and enjoy an overnight stop in Hotchkiss before heading to Gunnison. The 2,000 riders, and their support crews, will be arriving in Hotchkiss from Carbondale on Thursday, June 13. Their route along Highway 133 covers 65.4 miles and gains 3,958 feet in elevation. The grind up McClure Pass is not for sissies. The group will surely be ready to relax when they hit Hotchkiss. Many of the riders will be camping at the Delta County Fairgrounds, where they will find food vendors, music and a beer garden. The community is invited to come down as well. The food vendors will be serving from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., the beer garden opens at noon, and live music will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Ride the Rockies is an epic tour of Colorado created 34

years ago by the Denver Post, and has gained in popularity since its beginning year in 1986. The bicycle event challenges its cadre of riders with a different route each year, taking on some of Colorado’s most breathtaking mountain passes. This year’s route begins and ends in Crested Butte. On the first day, Sunday, June 9, riders travel to Gunnison. From there the route goes to Buena Vista on June 10; to Snowmass on June 11; to Carbondale on June 12; to Hotchkiss on June 13; to Gunnison on June 14; and finishes in Crested Butte on Saturday, June 15. Drivers are asked to give the bike riders plenty of room along the routes — Highway 133 on June 13, and Highway 62 on June 14 through Crawford and along the north rim of the Black Canyon. Ride organizers describe Friday’s ride as one of the hardest of the tour because of the elevation gain, and “one of the most scenic days of the tour.”

River fest a big success

The yearly festival, organized by the Western Slope Conservation Center, is the group’s premier event. The focus of the river fest is on the water shed that provides a lifeline to the Western Slope’s agriculturalists, wild life, recreational users and nature lovers, both near and far. WSCC stages the event to showcase the waters that sustain us.

Crawford’s theme for this year’s Pioneer Days, “Small Town — Big Heart,” speaks to the core of the town’s values and identity. Crawford, with a population of about 431, is nestled between wide-open ranchland and the peaks of the West Elk Mountains. The residents treasure the small town atmosphere and downhome rhythm of Crawford. Despite its size, the community sure knows how to put on a party! As they have done for the past 40 years, Crawford area folks have pulled out all the stops for a four-day extravaganza from June 6-9. The schedule is packed with activities for everyone: music lovers, food aficionados, parade fans, shoppers looking for that unique gift, drama queens and kings, and kids eager to join in on games in the park. The weekend starts with this year’s highly anticipated melodrama and dessert theater, “Literary Cents” or “Dewey Decimal Makes His Point” on Thursday night, June 6. The title suggests

some literary hijinks, perhaps with a well-read librarian, a dastardly villain (who murders the English language) and a timely hero. Every year the melodrama packs the house and encourages audience hootin’ and hollerin’ to add to the proceedings. The doors open to the Community Room at Crawford Town Hall at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. On Friday, the action is nonstop, much of it food related. Got a sweet tooth? Or are you an accomplished baker yourself? In that case check out the goodies or contribute to the array at the baking contest. Bakers can bring their entries to the town hall Friday, June 7, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Judging takes place from 3 to 5 p.m. The First State Bank of Colorado hosts a customer appreciation lunch, open to the public, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you’re feeling peckish by dinnertime, come to the fire auxiliary fundraising dinner from 4 to 6:30 p.m. A baked potato and salad bar is on the menu (adults $8, kids eight and under, $5.) New principal lands at Paonia Elementary BY TAMIE MECK Staff Writer

The eaglets at Paonia Elementary School will have a new principal when school doors open in August. Current principal Sam Cox recently announced that he’s leaving PES to become director of curriculum for Delta County Joint School District 50. His new responsibilities will include curriculum oversight, professional development, and classroom instruction. Cox said accepting the new position was a “very tough

decision. I’ve really loved working with such a supportive community and an exceptionally hard-working group of teachers and staff members.” Recognized numerous times for academic growth and achievement, most recently the coveted Succeeds Prize, Cox said the school was already highly successful when he arrived. “It’s not easy to step away from that,” he said. He also won’t have as much time with students, “And that’s going to be

tough.” Oversight of district curriculum is currently divided between assistant superintendent Kurt Clay, human resources director Jim Farmer and curriculum/instructional coordinator Connie Vincent. “The job was created to have one person oversee curriculum across all schools,” said Cox. “With so much on their plates, sometimes they don’t have as much time to focus on curriculum as they want to.” The job requires a shift from a leadership role to a support role working with principals and teacher teams to identify strengths and weaknesses in instruction. “For me it’s a big learning curve,” he said. “I’ve got a lot to learn, and a lot of neat people to learn from.” While curriculum in education shifts from year to year, the Colorado Department of Education is undergoing a “significant shift this year,” to a new set of standards, said Cox. Called 2020 Colorado Academic Standards. The biggest shift is in the area of science, with small shifts in language arts, math, the English language arts and other areas. “The district will identify those shifts and ensure district schools are staying current with those shifts and promoting the best student growth and achievement that we can.” Amelia Baldwin currently serves as dean of students at Grand Mesa Choice Academy and principal at Achieve Blended Learning Academy,

both alternative schools within the school district. A graduate of Hotchkiss High School where she was class and student body president, she chose her career path early in life. “I love school, I love education,” she said. “I’ve always had my hand in education, no matter what I was doing.” “I’m really excited to be able to be at the elementary level and to come into a place that has that community support and the family-like feel like this school has,” she said. She also looks forward to her involvement with students “at a time when they’re starting their journey into school and experiencing big milestones like transitioning into junior high school,” rather than at a time when their high school career is ending. In addition to a high-performing school, Baldwin inherits some special projects, among them construction of a new greenhouse and raised garden beds. Both are funded by a $5,000 “Toolbox For Education” grant from Lowe’s that the school’s Paonia Parent Organization was recently awarded. A mural project is expected to be completed this summer. Local artist Seth Weber, who specializes in murals, was selected for the project. The projects, explained Cox, are part of a larger campus improvement project. “I love that synergistic relationship between community, the staff and the parents and everyone involved,” said

Baldwin. “It’s incredible what they do in the classroom and outside of the classroom. It’s so inspiring.” Baldwin was able to spend a few days at PES getting to know the ropes and meeting students and staff. During morning student greet time, she realized she has many connections with the school community and the parents who were dropping their kids off at school. “More connections than she realized,” said Cox. “I think that’s really encouraging.” Cox said that at his two previous schools, the principals were gone by the time he got there and he had to dig through files and find where everything was. “For continuity purposes, this is extremely effective for us to be able to have this kind of time together.” “It’s really nice,” said Baldwin. “And I think it helps the community feel really good about somebody new coming in. Sam’s done such a great job and built such great relationships and any change is going to create a little bit of anxiety.” Cox and Baldwin, who officially start their new jobs in July, said they are “extremely appreciative” to have the opportunity to work together before the transition is complete while ending the year at their respective schools. “I’m incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to be able to have this time,” said Baldwin.

Free kids games will be held in the park from 1 to 4 p.m., including train rides from noon to 2. streets in town are oneway streets so the town asks that visitors respect the indicated traffic routes and designated parking areas. Tristan Pfeffer, chairperson of Pioneer Days for the past five years, treasures the enjoyment that has come from being a part of this event. She says that “it will always be a symbol of Crawford” for her and her husband, Lee. “It’s a fun, family-friendly event that really shows the spirit of the people that live in this area.” In advance of the festivities, she and the committee would like to thank volunteers and

attendees. “While attending, you wouldn’t know, but it takes many volunteers, months of preparation, generous sponsors and a love of community to put this whole thing together every year.” As she steps down from the chairperson position this year, she wants to say a big thank you to the board members and all of the volunteers over the years, whom she deeply appreciates. The North Fork History Museum is looking for a little help. Open from 1-3 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Labor Day, the museum is home to thousands of artifacts linking the past to the present. A little history about the museum itself: it consists of two buildings donated to North Fork Historical Society with the understanding they be moved — a 1906 house owned by the family of James Parks and formerly located at Midway, and in the 1907 Bowie Schoolhouse, a two-room schoolhouse donated to the historical society by the Adolph Coors Company, desks, books, photos, maps and all, with the understanding they would move it. But without volunteers to greet guests, keeping the museum open during the busy summer season is nothing short of difficult. Museum director Judy Livingston is seeking a few volunteers will-

here on a regular basis, that’d be great,” said Livingston. Among the artifacts are early coal mining record books, the medical cabinet of Paonia’s first doctor, the original switchboard where operator Polly Davis learned everyone’s business, musical instruments, books, photos, special exhibits, and the massive ornate cash register used to ring up sales at Paonia Mercantile. “The great thing about this museum is that almost every single thing in here is from the North Fork Valley,” said Livingston, whose grandfather arrived in Paonia in a covered wagon in 1910. While the museum has set hours, Livingston said volunteers can choose their hours. She’s also looking for volunteers to greet visitors the afternoon of July 4 when the museum hosts its annual ice cream social during Cherry Days. Livingston can be reached at 527-3970.

On Friday, June 7, Black Canyon Astronomical Society and Crawford State Park will host a free stargazing event at the park. Several large telescopes will be set up. The party starts around sunset (8 p.m.) and goes into the dark hours of the night. The weather so far is looking good, so participants will be able to take in the wondrous sites of our night

sky — constellations, the Milky Way, globular clusters, planetary nebulae, distant galaxies, double stars, Jupiter and maybe even Saturn! This is a free event and open to the public. Rural Philanthropy Days coming to North Fork BY ROBBIE WINNE Staff Writer

This year the North Fork Valley will be hosting the Rural Philanthropy Days (RPD) conference from June 12-14. The RPD operates in partnership with the Community Resource Center, the Anschutz Family foundation and statewide grant makers. This is RPD’s 28th year as an organization but this is its first visit to Delta County. The RPD consortium brings together nonprofit organizations, local government officials and key community and business leaders to network with funders. The focused three-day event creates a platform for the participants to receive guidance for community projects and for informed dialogue between funders and rural entities. As well as exposing North Fork movers and shakers to funding options and practices, the conference will also showcase the North Fork’s strengths and potential. The organizers are

The gas will pass through a water separator before being piped to an enclosed vertical oxidizer where the methane gas will be converted to carbon dioxide and water vapor. The system will be connected to the internet from a satellite link and cell phone connection. The system will be powered by a 36 KW diesel generator with a 200 gallon fuel tank. Elyse Casselberry, county community and economic development director, told the commissioners that planning staff has reviewed the application and determined that the application is complete. Notice was sent to all properties within 1,000 feet of the larger Bowie Resource Mine property. Required published

notice and public posting of the public hearing was made. A request for comments was sent to review agencies. County Road and Bridge noted that part of the access road to the site is county road (Hubbard Creek) and there is no winter maintenance of this road. Colorado Geologic Survey stated that blasting and vibroseis explorations are unlikely to trigger landslide activity, but recommended the county request the applicant to provide an estimate of anticipated ground acceleration associated with the proposed seismic explorations. A four-week construction period is projected. Delivery of the equipment will be on six to eight highway legal trucks. One to two cranes will be required for unloading and placement of the equipment. One to

two concrete ready mix trucks will deliver the cement for a concrete pad for the thermal oxidizer. Pickup trucks and trailers will deliver fencing materials. Eight to 10 truckloads of gravel will be used at the site. Five to ten construction personnel will access the site in light duty trucks. The site will be secured with a chain link fence and locked gate. Once operations begin, one to two trips per week will be made by maintenance personnel to check, service and deliver fuel to the site. Commissioners agreed that sufficient information had been presented to determine that the applicant can complete the project in compliance will applicable standards and requirements. Funding for well water tests extended Only 6 percent of the wells eligible for free water quality analysis in a six-county area have been tested since funding was secured in September 2015. Local public health officials encourage private well owners in Delta, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Montrose, Ouray, and San Miguel counties to take advantage of the free well water testing, before funding ends in September 2020. “Well water testing is important for well owners’ peace of mind, knowing their health is not in jeopardy or discovering that there are contaminants that put your or your family’s health at risk, so that you can treat the water appropriately and mitigate those risks,” said Kenneth Nordstrom, director of environmental health at the Delta County Health Department. Nordstrom’s office is the coordinator of the well water testing grant from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention that made $109,409 avail-

able per year to the West Central Public Health Partnership. The partnership consists of public health agencies in the six rural counties, covering 9,569 square miles and 93,440 people. The funds pay for homeowners whose primary source of drinking water is a private well to receive a water sampling kit, mail it to the testing laboratories, and receive results that help them understand their water quality. However, homeowners must voluntarily request the kits, collect the water samples, and give the public health offices permission to publish their well’s results anonymously with aggregated results for the whole area. Of the estimated 9,600 wells at private residences in the area, sampling kits have been requested for 756 wells and results have been received for 600. which is helping promote the service in Ouray County, Roberts said, “A number of us folks with private wells have always wondered what is in our well water and this is an excellent opportunity to find out at no cost. The sample collection is quite simple and everything you need is in the kit that is mailed to you. I was amazed at how much information the tests provided on our well water.” Wells should be tested periodically, because aquifers or well structures can change, resulting in new contaminants entering the water. The free tests would normally cost $500 or more. They provide results for pH, alkalinity, hardness, bacteria (Coliform and E. Coli), 22

funding, and proposals must be submitted by standard mail. The purpose of the Colorado Forest Legacy Program is to protect environmentally important private forest areas that are threatened by conversion to non-forest uses. The program provides an opportunity for private landowners to retain ownership and management of their land, while receiving compensation for unrealized development rights. Forestlands that contain important scenic, cultural, recreation and water resources, including fish and wildlife habitat and other ecological values, and that support traditional forest uses, will receive priority. Landowners who elect to participate in the program are required to follow a

In 2019 the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation is anticipated to grant $4050 million for lining and piping irrigation ditches as part of its salinity control program. The money will be available in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and New Mexico. The Delta Conservation District is offering grants to area ditch companies that wish to apply for the Bureau of Reclamation salinity funds. The District’s grants will be used to help pay the costs of preparing an application for the salinity funds. Requirements for receiving the application assistance grants include: 1) The ditch company plans to apply for Reclamation salinity funds in 2019; 2) The ditch company’s application for Reclamation salinity funds is prepared with the assistance of an engineer

land management plan approved by the CSFS. Activities consistent with the management plan are permitted, including timber harvesting, grazing and recreation activities. The Colorado State Forest Stewardship Coordinating Committee will evaluate proposals and recommend to the state forester those proposals that have sufficient merit to forward to the U.S. Forest Service. Forwarded proposals will then compete at a regional and national level for funding. Compensation available for forestland protection Colorado landowners who want to protect environmentally valuable private forest areas that could someday be threatened by development or conversion to other nonforest uses — and who desire to receive monetary compensation in the process — now have the opportunity to submit proposals to protect their forestlands. The Colorado State Forest Service is accepting Forest Legacy Program proposals from Colorado landowners. The program authorizes the CSFS or U.S. Forest Service to purchase permanent conservation easements on private forestlands to prevent those lands from being converted to non-forest uses. Ralph Lyle Ray Jan. 8, 1930 ~ June 1, 2019 Ralph Lyle Ray, 89, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in his home at Pea Green, Colo., on Saturday, June 1, 2019, incident to bone marrow disease and a long full life. He was born Jan. 8, 1930 in Olathe (Pea Green), Colo., to the late Charles Edward and Bertha Mae (Phillips) Ray. Ralph graduated from Olathe High School in 1949. He worked as a farmer and a cattleman on his farm his entire life. He was proud of living in Pea Green on the original family homestead. Ralph had many hobbies which he enjoyed with family and friends. He loved everything outdoors including hunting, fishing, camping, and cooking over a fire. He grew a huge garden every year and enjoyed sharing the produce with friends and family. He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed softball and football (he was a huge Bronco fan!). Ralph was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He said he was the happiest when he was serving others. He was one to stay to the very last to help clean up. Ralph was a member and served on the Board

of Pea Green Cemetery Board, Pea Green Community Club, and Delta Co-Op. He was also a member of Delta Elks and supported Merna in her numerous community service organizations. Shavano Conservation District recognized Ralph as the 2005 Conservation Farmer of the Year. Anyone who met Ralph became his instant friend. He made everyone feel loved and was fun to be around. He also loved to play practical jokes. Ralph was previously married to Gertie Lee (Baskett) McCombs and they had two daughters, Kathleen and Karen. Ralph married Merna Lay Storey on Dec. 27, 1976, and when he married Merna he gained two more daughters, Susan and Lydia. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Bertha Ray; three sisters Fern

(Harry) Taylor and Ellen (Keith) Calhoun and Marie (Gilbert) Wilson and his adopted brother Wilber Dickerson. It is felt that many longtimers of the area will be interested in this documentation. “Being of sound mind, I am going to start with my birthday, Jan. 7, 1905, as it was told to me. My father came to Colorado six months before my mother brought me here from Glenwood, Iowa,” wrote the late Bert Williams who lived a great deal of his life in the Delta vicinity. Bert was the father of Ralph Williams, a long-time Montrose resident. Bert’s father worked in the mining area as a wagon driver, but the snow slides and mountains were frightening to him, having grown up in the flat-lands of Ohio prior to journeying to Iowa and Nebraska. He met his future wife in Lincoln, Neb., where she was attending the academy (an equivalent of high school). She learned the photography business, qualifying her to work for a while in a photography shop in Delta. “When Dad left the mine, he came to Olathe and went to work on a large sheep-growing ranch as the ranch foreman,” wrote Bert. His mother became the ranch cook as well as being in charge of the mail. She drove her fast horse and buggy, at least twice a week, into the town of Olathe for mail and supplies. The rubbertired buggy had a top with side curtains as well as a charcoal-burning heater, which kept her comfortable for the 10-mile trip each way. “Halley, an Englishman, owned the ranch and Mom said that on a windy day Mr. Halley would say ‘The hair is blowing through my ‘air.’ I guess Dad and Mom only worked at the ranch for a year or so,” wrote Bert, adding that Halley sold the ranch. That’s when the Williams family moved to Delta.

(Halley sold to John Ketchum in 1897, who in turn sold to Fred Donnelley and Johnny Palmer.) “Dad went to work at Joe McGraw’s livery barn. We lived in the first house north of the Grand Mesa Lumber yard. Dad had to drive the hearse for funerals and when the fire bell rang, he would saddle a horse and go to the hose cart and take it to the fire,” wrote Bert, adding that both of these incidents were vivid in his memory. “Of course in those days, it wasn’t very much of a town — maybe two blocks wide and three or four blocks long ... Dad then was working on the Methodist Church and the Lincoln School.” One day Bert followed a crowd that was going up the Third Street Hill and wound up watching his first football game which was held just north of what was the old monastery, which is now long gone. “In those days the ‘flying wedge’ was the main part of the game ... I saw Alec Wigram get crushed in that wedge play that day.” Bert’s parents bought some machinery and horses and rented land south of Delta, near where the former Coors barley building sits today. “Grand Junction had built a sugar factory and imported Russians to do the hand work in the beet fields. It was a new crop in Delta and it paid pretty good and it looked like beets would ‘make’ the town of Delta. The

folks then bought a farm west of town, out past the fairgrounds, where the city lagoons are now. A county road and bridge crossed the Uncompahgre River and to the north of the bridge was the folks’ farm. “One day Chipeta, the queen of the Ute Indians, and some of her tribe were at the fair, and on my way home from walking to school, I watched the Indians. At another time, I saw an airplane at the fairground. “I guess it was the next spring that this valley had terribly high water and my folks got washed out. The river changed its course to the south of the farm and the bridge and road that I walked to school was gone. It was at this time that the folks moved up on to Orchard Mesa, the name of the mesa north of here, where the airport is and I went to a one-room school in North Delta. “The school had a large pot-bellied stove for heat in the wintertime and the fire was most enjoyable in cold weather because I had to walk that mile and a half to school of a morning. “There was eight houses up on the mesa at this time and the people had high hopes for the mesa, but there was not enough water to keep crops growing. There is still the old reservoir up there and signs of habitation — ditches and other signs of farming, but the last house was destroyed by fire a good many years ago.”

Mending Hearts provides understanding atmosphere “Mending Hearts” is offered every Thursday for seven weeks beginning Thursday, June 6. This support group meets from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the HopeWest office at 195 Stafford Lane, Delta. Although each person’s grief is unique, those coping with the death of a loved one share a common bond. Mending Hearts provides an understanding atmosphere, where participants can openly

share their thoughts and feelings as they navigate their journey through grief. Each support group begins with grief education and is followed by a small group discussion. Cedaredge Sick Tree Day scheduled June 15 The annual Sick Tree Day is set for Saturday, June 15. The Cedaredge Tree Board, along with Colorado State Forester Vince Urbina, will visit up to 15 yards experiencing tree problems. Tree board members include four Colorado Master Gardeners and an expert on insects. They will

diagnose the problem and prescribe management solutions. This free service is open to all residents of Cedaredge and the surrounding Surface Creek Valley. To schedule a visit a person can either sign up in person at the Cedaredge Town Hall or by calling the Town Hall at 856-3123.

Edge of Cedars Art Show opens June 6 Zeta Omicron Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority is holding the 47th annual Edge of the Cedars Art Show at Cedaredge Middle School June 6-9. The local art show has become well known and respected, drawing many local participants as well as those from outlying areas and other states, as well. The judge for this year’s exhibit is Wayne McKinzie. His background is not only in fine arts, but commercial art and illustration. He was a commission artist for both individual and corporate collections for many years. He has had several oneperson shows, as well as being represented in group shows and galleries in Colorado and New Mexico. The Edge of the Cedars Art Show is a non-juried show; therefore, every work of art entered is displayed. The categories are oil/acrylic, watercolor, graphics, pastels, mixed media, sculpture, photography, digitally enhanced

photography, pottery, stained glass, and open. Besides providing an outstanding art show for public viewing, funds provide art scholarships to graduating seniors to encourage further education. Scholarship winners will be honored at the reception and their artwork will be highlighted at the show. Proceeds from entry fees and commissions from sales go toward these scholarships. The awards selected by the judge are Best of Show and best in each of the four expertise levels — professional, advanced, amateur and student. The awards will be presented to the artists at the judge’s reception on Wednesday, June 5, from 7-9 p.m. The gallery will be open June 6-9 at Cedaredge Middle School. Inaugural event

Last weekend’s inaugural First Saturday ﬂea market attracted residents new and old. Roxanne and Danny Braddix (foreground) heard about the event days after they moved to Cedaredge. The couple, who relocated from Hawaii, liked the feel of the area when they passed through town in May and they said it was an easy decision to return to stay. Held on the grounds of the Old Slaughterhouse Music Hall, the marketplace will be available again on July 6, Aug. 3, and Sept. 7. The event also drew out-of-town visitors, including the extended family of Cedaredge residents Arlan and Brigitt Peckham. They enjoyed a morning touring downtown shops. Arts center looks to new horizons

The public is invited on Saturday, June 15, to help the fledgling Grand Mesa Arts & Events Center (GMAEC) celebrate its one-year anniversary. A birthday bash is scheduled from 5-8 p.m. at 195 West Main in downtown Cedaredge. Those attending will be treated to music, appetizers, wine and beer, and one free glass of celebratory champagne. And of course there will be birthday cake. Thanks to generous underwriters, the whole event will be free with Alpine Bank, Jack FM Radio, Impact Communities, Delta Federal Credit Union, and Bill and Jeanie Hellman picking up the tab for the evening. Throughout the center’s first year of operation, corporate sponsors have stepped up to provide significant

monetary and in-kind contributions. It has been an outpouring of support for which the nonprofit organization is abundantly grateful. According to Deborah Shaffer, GMAEC executive director, “Our most valuable support comes from donations and sponsorships from local community members, organizations, and businesses.” Now comes the challenging part — sustaining the momentum. While continuing to seek business sponsorships and external grants, GMAEC is launching initiatives to encourage individual supporters to become sustaining members. “We are shifting,” says Shaffer, “from fundraising for one-time donations to encouraging sustaining memberships to cover day-to-day operating expenses and support our capital campaign to purchase our building.”

The center’s historic building has been successfully renovated into a vibrant facility with an acoustically dynamic performance and public events auditorium, a sunny and spacious art gallery, and art classrooms. The facility is currently being leased and

the goal of the center’s capital campaign is to raise enough to purchase the building prior to November 2022 when the present lease agreement ends. Further details regarding the sustaining membership drive and the capital cam-

paign will be presented at the center’s June 15 birthday celebration. As the center’s new incentives move forward, a variety of membership incentives will be available including drawings with opportunities to win a weekend in Ouray or a week in Hawaii.

The official season opening of Cedaredge’s Pioneer Town kicked off Saturday, May 25, with a host of activities during annual Heritage Day, hosted by the Surface Creek Valley Historical Society. Attendees enjoyed a petting zoo, carriage

rides, pioneer food samples and more. Located on five acres, the history village is complete with museums, twenty-five historic buildings and a gift shop. Admission is $7 for adults, $4 for children and $6 for seniors, Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Upcoming events include the summer concert series and Night on the Town. Concerts are every Thursday and Sunday through August. Sunday shows start at 4 p.m., Thursday shows begin at 7 p.m. All admission is by donation. The location, Chapel of the Cross,

One of the events I look forward to each spring is the arrival of the first hummingbirds. My first sighting came April 15. I rushed to put out my three feeders to feed these hungry, high energy birds. But it wasn’t until May when more hummers arrived following the early scouts. Let’s face it, hummingbirds are the true jewels of our gardens. Their antics around feeders provide hours of cheap entertainment. But there is more to feeding our hummers than putting out artificial feeders. After all, we are gardeners, aren’t we? The recipe I use for my feeders is 1 cup of granulated white sugar dissolved in five cups of water that has previously been boiled. This insures that there are no living

coral bells. Plants that attract hummingbirds in mid-summer through the fall would include Texas red yucca, hummingbird mint, bee balm, salvia, and hummingbird trumpet. The presence of these later bloomers will ensure an abundance of food for hummingbirds at the height of their southward migration. Even more plants that attract hummingbirds include butterfly bush, trumpet vine, petunias, and honeysuckles. Added to the sugar diet of these hummingbirds are the many insects they feed upon to satisfy their protein needs. So it behooves us not to excessively spray insecticides in our yards. These birds, along with bees and other insects will appreciate this. We basically have three species of hummingbirds in our area, the blackchinned, the broad-tailed and the rufous. The blackchinned and broad-tailed hummers arrive first in the spring, followed by the rufous in the summer. The females of these species are pretty plain with iridescent green backs and heads with whitish ventral surface feathers. Immature hummingbirds are difficult to tell apart from females. Male broad-tailed hummingbirds have a rosecolored throat and green head. The black-chinned male hummer has a black throat with a purple stripe below. The male rufous has an unmistak-

able solid rufous (brown) back with an orangered throat. And they are extremely pugnacious, chasing all trespassers away. You may also see another hovering visitor in your hummingbird garden. This would be the white-lined sphinx, a rather large moth whose caterpillar has a horn on its rear end (not the tomato hornworm moth). So enjoy these tiny flying hummingbird jewels while they visit us during a brief time during the summer months. They will fly south in the fall as cold weather returns and nectar sources dwindle. Making your yard a hummingbird magnet is easy to do. By providing an assortment of colorful flowering plants, you will be rewarded with the company of these wonderful wild birds. You will also help ensure their future by replacing food and habitats that have been lost due to human activities like agriculture and urbanization. Planting a variety of plants with different blooming times will help to keep hummingbirds happy all season. Curt Williams shared stories and changes he’s seen in law enforcement over the past four decades as a Denver policeman and investigator with Colorado Bureau of Investigation at a Friends of the Cedaredge Library presentation “I Was an Agent for the CBI.” He graduated in 1971 and worked with the Denver Police Department for 33 years. After retiring and moving to Cedaredge, the CBI approached him about being an investigator. “I thought western Colorado would be more ‘stole your cow’ investigations but there’s nothing different than in Denver,”

The changes he’s seen over the years were mostly from technology, such as getting walkie talkies and moving from handwritten reports to typed. Interestingly he noted that during his time with DPD he saw homicides move from domestic cases to gang violence. Narcotic
