Weekly Media Services The Athletic Communications Office produces a weekly release featuring game notes, updated statistics and other pertinent information on the Lady Statesmen softball program. To access this release, please log on to www.gostatesmen.com and click on softball. Each week’s release will be located on the right side of the web page. The PDF formatted document is posted every Monday by noon. Press Credentials Credential requests for working press, photographers, television and radio should be made to Matt Jones, Director of Athletic Communications. Credentials will be available at the Media Will Call gate located on the East side of University Field. Credentials should be requested at least seven days in advance of the game. No credentials will be mailed. If there is a special circumstance regarding one or more of the games, please contact the Athletic Communications Office.

Player Interviews Media members must adhere to the following guidelines regarding Lady Statesmen player interviews: (1) All player interviews must be coordinated through the Athletic Communications office; (2) Players are available for interviews, either at the Dorgan Center or via telephone prior to practice (generally 1:30-4:00 p.m.) and following the completion of practice; (3) Please give at least 24 hours notice; (4) No interviews will be allowed on the day of a game. Coaches Interviews Head coach Casey Bourgoyne Charles is available for interviews in her office in the Billy Dorgan Jr. Student-Athlete Performance Center. Bourgoyne and her staff are available for interviews weekday mornings between 10 a.m. and noon in their offices. Members of the staff will also conduct interviews after the conclusion of practice each day. Please contact the Athletic Communications Office to schedule an interview outside of this time. No interviews will be granted before a game. Practice The Delta State University Lady Statesmen practice at University Field and the Bryce Griffis Indoor Practice Facility. Practice begins everyday at 1:30 p.m. with team meetings and actual workouts begin at 2 p.m. Practices are open to the media and general public. For more information on practice times, please contact the DSU Athletic Communications Office. Parking A limited number of media parking spaces are available at University Field. The spaces are passed out on a first come, first serve basis. It is suggested that parking passes be requested with the initial media credential request. Should special circumstances arise, please contact Matt Jones as soon as possible.

Gameday Services Members of the working media will be provided the following at University Field: game notes package, game program, complete statistics and the opportunity to interview both coaches at the conclusion of the game. The final stat pack will be available 20 minutes after the game. Radio and Television Radio stations planning to originate a broadcast(s) from University Field should contact the Director of Athletic Communications at least one week prior to the planned broadcast. Courtesy lines are providied for the official station of the opposing school. Any other line needed will require assistance from Telecommunications (846-4030).

Jeremy McClain begins his third year as director of athletics at Delta State University after one of the most successful years in the program’s history. In his first year as Director, McClain continued to build upon the championship success of Delta State’s 13 intercollegiate athletic programs, while improving student services and community involevment. The Statesmen Football and Baseball programs claimed Gulf South Conference titles, while Lady Statesmen Basketball returned to national prominence with a GSC and NCAA South Region title, and a trip to the Final Four. In all, eight teams competed in NCAA postseason play and the future looks even better for the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen under McClain’s leadership. Last year, DSU launched a comprehensive student-services program including the NCAA’s Champs Life Skills Program. DSU Athletics now offers several seminars to student-athletes on several topics including financial planning, and time management. McClain officially took the reigns of Delta State’s Department of Athletics on July 1, 2007 and the former Delta State All-American from Houlka hasn’t looked back since. Prior to taking the helm of DSU Athletics, McClain served the University as director of development with the Delta State Foundation until June 30, 2007. McClain has been associated with athletics nearly his entire life. A standout two-sport athlete at Houlka High School, McClain turned heads with his prowess on the baseball diamond and earned a full scholarship to attend Delta State University. An ace for the Statesmen pitching staff from 1996-1999, McClain still holds many of Delta State’s career pitching marks, including most appearances (69), most victories (45), most strikeouts (324) and most innings pitched (363.1). His perfect 15-0 season in 1999 earned the prolific hurler All-American, All-Region and All-Conference accolades, as well as team MVP honors. The hard-throwing right-hander was drafted by the Boston Red Sox organization in May 1999 after he earned his bachelor’s of business administration. McClain pursued his dreams of playing professional baseball for the next five years, completing stints with the Red Sox (1999 – 2000), Jackson Diamondkats (2000 – 2001), Nashua Pride (2001), San Angelo Colts (2001) and Jackson Senators (2002 – 2003). Although focused on making it to the next level, McClain remained realistic of his chances and completed work on his master’s degree in business administration at Delta State in 2002. Also during that time, he worked as an account executive with the Jackson Senators. From there, McClain hung up the spikes and became a marketing representative for Federated Insurance Company in Calhoun City, a firm he would stay with from Nov. 2003 – Nov. 2006. During his tenure, he operated the most profitable territory in a six-state region for two consecutive years, while also improving a two-year loss ratio from 20.4 percent to 3.3 percent. When the opportunity to return to Delta State University presented itself, McClain did not hesitate, accepting the offer to become the director of development for Delta State’s Foundation. In just under six months, McClain raised a total of $165,000 in cash gifts and over $250,000 in pledges. “A great foundation has been laid here at Delta State University, and it is my desire to continue to build upon that foundation. It is my goal to continually enhance student-athlete services, while enriching their livews through community service. Our charge to help mold our student-athletes into the best people, not just competitors, they can be and we will not stop looking at ways to accomplish this goal,” stated McClain. He is a 1999 graduate of Delta State University with a bachelor’s degree in business. In 2002, McClain completed his master’s degree in business administration, and his currently pursuing a doctorate degree in educational leadership from Delta State University. McClain is married to the former Christie Cannon of Calhoun City. The couple has one son, Cannon and one daughter, Kate.

Coach Casey Bourgoyne Charles begins her second season as head coach of the Delta State University Lady Statesmen after posting a 27-24 mark and a trip to the Gulf South Conference Tournament.

As one of the top shortstops in the Gulf South Conference from 1999-2002, Casey Bourgoyne-Charles made all the plays for the Lady Statesmen. As of July 1, 2008, the three-time All-GSC standout was hired upon to call them. Her hiring also had historical implications, as she became the first female head coach and the first former Lady Statesmen to lead the program in Delta State softball history. After completing an outstanding four-year career with the Lady Statesmen, BourgoyneCharles began her coaching career as a graduate assistant for former coach David Kuhn in 2003. After two successful seasons as a graduate assistant, she moved to the University of North Alabama where she spent four seasons as the primary assistant to head coach Jeremy Reece. While at UNA, the Lions posted a 136-82 record and returned to postseason play for the first time since 2000. In 2005, Coach Bourgoyne-Charles helped guide UNA to a 36-20 finish and a trip to the GSC Tournament. One year later, North Alabama went 40-20 and advanced all the way to the NCAA South Region Tournament in Lakeland, Fla. Bourgoyne-Charles finished her playing career at Delta State in 2002 after four years at shortstop. When the Walker, La., native put down the glove, she ranked first all-time in GSC history in assists and she also held the record for assists in a single season. She is also a member of a select club of Lady Statesmen who have been named to the All-GSC Team at least three times. In Delta State softball history, only six have accomplished the feat. Bourgoyne-Charles is married to Jeffrey Charles of Neosho, Mo. The couple resides in Cleveland.

Dave Martinez is in his second year as assistant coach of the Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball program and head coach Casey Bourgoyne-Charles. Martinez is an excellent young coach with a tremendous background in collegiate and professional baseball. Martinez recently spent time as a graduate assistant softball coach at Sul Ross State University in Texas, while earning his master of education in physical education, graduating in May 2008. Five years earlier, Martinez was a baseball player for the Division III school, earning a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology and sports medicine in May of 2003. Martinez has also played in the Mexican Professional Baseball League, as well as leagues across the United States. After graduation, Martinez worked as a coach and physical education teacher at Del Rio Junior High and High School, the same high school he graduated from in 1996. Martinez also volunteered as a coach in summer recreational baseball leagues. Martinez, born August 2, 1978, is the son of Gilbert and Cooky Martinez, and has one brother, Gilbert Martinez III. He has one nephew, Zachary, and one niece, Olivia.

Kristi Basso enters her first year as a Graduate Assistant for coach Casey Charles and the Lady Statesmen softball team. Basso was a four year letterwinner for coaches David Kuhn and Casey Charles and the Lady Statesmen softball program. The outstanding catcher wrapped up her Lady Statesmen career with 65 hits, 35 RBI and five career home runs. The Ponchatoula, La., native has been a President and Deans List scholar, NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete and was inducted into the Athletic Directors Hall of Fame at Delta State. Basso was also a member of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education, a former officer of Student Athlete Advisory Committee, and a member of the Athletic Advisory Selection Committee. Basso graduated from Covington High School in Covington, La. in 2005, and is currently pursuing a masters degree in Health Physical Education and Recreation.

Blake Whatley is in his second season as a graduate assistant on coach Casey Bourgoyne’s staff. The Cleveland native played baseball at Bayou Academy and Mississippi Delta Community College, before attending Delta State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training. After graduation, Whatley spent one year as an assistant softball coach and athletic trainer at Arkansas-Monticello. Under his leadership, the Cotton-Blossoms finished fourth in the GSC West Division. Whatley then returned to Delta State to pursue a master’s degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. During the fall, Whatley led the Bayou Academy Lady Colts to their fourth-consecutive and his second-straight Mississippi Private School Association State Championship, finishing with a 44-4 record. He became the third Delta State coach to lead the Lady Colts to a MPSA Championship in three years.

Senior leadership a plus in 2010 By, J.T. Webb - SB Contact After a disappointing finish to the 2009 campaign, the 2010 Delta State University softball team will return seven starters, including seven seniors from a team that finished 2724. Coach Charles expects solid play and leadership from her seven seniors. “Five of those seniors have been with the program for a while, and they know what we as coaches expect from them. They realize how tough it is to win in this league. I hope we are able to send them out on a positive note,” said Charles.

Brooke Allgood, the leading home run hitter from the 2009 team returns. The Wallace State CC transfer hit seven bombs to lead the team in her first year with the program. Anchoring third base for the Lady Statesmen is another former All-GSC selection, Chelsea Carr. The middle infielderbatted .256 with one home run and 12 RBIs during her junior season. The Lady Statesmen will also expect solid seasons from first baseman Paige Silverthorn, catcher Kim Hensley and utility player Emily Hearn. Charles returns her entire pitching staff, including senior Kate Moreland. The hard-throwing right hander finished 2009 with a 5-7 mark. Moreland pushed herself into the DSU record book as well, moving into 10th place all-time with 155 career strikeouts. Adding to the 2010 staff will be freshman Brittany Gonzalez. The Denham Springs, La., native was named to the 4A-All-State Team as a pitcher at Live Oak HS in 2008 and 2009. Nikki D’Aurelio and Crista Richard are junior college transfers who will look to crack their way into the starting lineup this season. D’Aurelio batted .313 with 22 RBIs in at

Two seniors return who were named to the 2009 All-Gulf South Conference Team. Shortstop Brittany Eikner was named to the First Team after a career-best five home runs and 27 RBIs. The slick fielder also hit .280, while committing a mere four errors last season. Also returning is Second Team All-GSC pitcher Edie Oliver. Oliver finished with an 18-12 mark, as she earned career-highs in appearances, wins, strikeouts and innings pitched. Oliver finished 10th in the league with 127 strikeouts as well. The Eupora native also finished third in the league with 206.2 innings pitched. Also returning with high expectations is senior Courtney Clark. The Sheridan, Ark., native was one of only two Lady Statesmen to hit above .300 with a .303 batting average last season. Clark ranks eighth all-time at DSU with 14 career home runs and ranks ninth with 93 career RBIs.

North Central Missouri College, while Richard was named AllConference during her career at Alabama Southern CC. Freshman infielder Taylor Hughes will also challenge for a spot in Charles’ lineup. The Morton native saw extensive playing time during fall practice at second base. With senior leadership, along with several talented newcomers, the Lady Statesmen will look to contend for the Gulf South Conference title and a spot in the NCAA Tournament this year.

Bourgoyne-Charles makes mark on program By, J.T. Webb - SB Contact The 2009 edition of the Delta State University softball team featured a new squad, a new coach and a new attitude. Four, sometimes five, new players were inserted into the starting lineup, making the task of building a team, her team, a challenege for coach Casey Bourgoyne-Charles. In her first season, coach Bourgoyne-Charles took that nucleus of talented players and led them to a berth in the Gulf South Conference Tournament for an unprecedented 22ndstraight year â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a feat no other GSC member school has accomplished. There were two streaks that helped define the 2009 season â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the Lady Statesmen dropped seven straight contests from February into March, but bounced back with a six game winning streak that propelled them into the postseason. The GSC Crossover was once again an obstacle that could not be overtaken, as DSU dropped all four games in the tournament, which matches schools from the East and West Divisions. However, not all was lost at that point, as the Lady Statesmen were still within striking distance of Arkansas Tech and Arkansas-Monticello, who finished the season first and second in the GSC West. The Lady Statesmen split four games with the Cotton Blossoms, but lost all four games to Arkansas Tech, who claimed the West Division crown. The Lady Statesmen earned the No. 3 seed from the West at the GSC Tournament, but another date with Alabama Huntsville awaited. The Lady Chargers entered the game ranked No. 1 in the country in the NFCA poll, but were in second place in the East Division behind Valdosta State. The Lady Statesmen fell 5-1 to the eventual National Runner-Up Lady Chargers, and this proved to be the final game of the season, as downpours forced a rain shortened tournament to a close. DSU finished the first season of the Casey BourgoyneCharles era with an overall record of 27-24 and finished an even 15-15 in GSC play. There were some individual bright spots for the young Lady Statesmen, as senior Brittany Tillery wrapped up her stellar career finishing in the DSU all-time record books third in career batting average (.357), second in hits (233), sixth in runs

batted in (107), fifth in home runs (17), second in runs scored (172), third in stolen bases (96) and tied for first in games played with 241. The Starkville native was named Second Team All Gulf South Conference for her 2009 efforts, in which she batted .341 with five home runs, seven doubles, two triples, 28 RBI and 27 stolen bases. Junior shortstop Brittany Eikner was the only Lady Statesmen named First Team All GSC, as she batted .280 with five long-balls, seven doubles and 27 RBIs. The Grenada native also finished with a stellar .972 fielding percentage. Her five home runs and 27 RBIs were both career highs. Also being named to the All-GSC Second Team was workhorse pitcher Edie Oliver. The junior had what turned out to be arguably the best season of her career, as she had career highs in wins (18), appearances (34), innings pitched (206.2) and strikeouts (127). The Eupora native earned a spot in the DSU all-time record books for appearances, wins, strikeouts and innings pitched. Junior transfer Brooke Allgood was the power at the plate for DSU, as she finished with a team-high seven home runs. The Hueytown, Ala., native also finished third on the team with 26 RBIs. Junior Courtney Clark, along with Tillery, was one of only two Lady Statesmen to bat over .300 as she finished the season with a .303 clip. Clark also hit three home runs and drove in 19. Senior catcher Kristi Basso also helped the cause as she had her most productive year at the plate, as she hit all five of her career home runs during the 2009 campaign.

2010 MEDIA & RECRUITING GUIDE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE Academic excellence, 41 National Championships and a leadership role in the NCAA’s Division II make the Gulf South Conference (GSC) something special. As a charter member of D-II, the league’s 15 universities in six southeastern states enter the 39th year of setting the standards nationally, always breaking new ground. In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to talk about athletics; when the meeting ended, a new league emerged - the Mid-South Conference - started by, and to this day run by, the CEOs, the first in NCAA history. To this day, it is that CEO-control and involvement that makes the league work and its 14 championships (football; men’s & women’s cross country and soccer; volleyball, men’s & women’s basketball, tennis and golf; softball and baseball) so bitterly contested. From that point forward, the GSC has been giant steps ahead of the D-II pack. Dating back to 1997, the league has found neutral sites paying sizeable guarantees for most of its team championships. NCAA Conventions regularly feature GSC-proposed or -inspired legislation. No one wins more regionals or earns more NCAA post-season bids. In 2004, the league purchased its own new construction office space. But the crowning moment came last year, when the GSC debuted its highly successful “GSC-TV Live” package of nine football games and its basketball finals. Add to that its web-TV show, “GSC Sports Weekly,” and you can see why the past few years have been so special and why 2007-08 should be even better. We take pride in our 41 National Team Championships in 12 sports and more than 100 regional titles, especially because there is no sacrifice on the academic side, where GSC student-athletes regularly earn Academic All-America. The Conference added one more National Title to its resume in 2007 when Valdosta State captured the National Football Championship, defeating Northwest Missouri State. Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State were the charter members who launched the league. Scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the GSC to football, won by Jacksonville State. In 1971, the addition of Southeast Louisiana (SELA) and Nichols State increased the membership to eight. The league opened an office in Hammond, LA, changed its name to the Gulf South Conference and began championships in nine men’s sports. Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) joined in 1972 and two years later, NELA left for Division I with SELA and Nicholls State following in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the CEOs admitted Valdosta State, followed by West Georgia (1983). In 1991, Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season, decreasing the membership to 17. The Conference decreased to 15 teams in 2006-07 when Central Arkansas moved to Division I and Lincoln Memorial moved to the South Atlantic Conference. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office

to Birmingham. The current Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office since October, 1992. He is assisted by Assistant Commissioner for Media and Public Affairs Michael Anderson, Associate Sports Information Director Tim Andrzejewski, Sports Information Assistant Michael Banks and Assistant to the Commissioner Andrea Nguyen. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. David Rankin (Southern Arkansas). Joining him on the executive committee are Vice Chair Dr. Beheruz Sethna (West Georgia) and past-Chair Dr. Robert Brown (Arkansas Tech). THE TIME IS NOW...LADY STATESMEN SOFTBALL Dr. John Hilpert • President Dr. John Hilpert’s five year tenure as president has resulted in significant growth and progress for Delta State University. A strong proponent of year-long themes, Dr. Hilpert’s presidency has been marked by three clearly-defined, straightforward initiatives – “The Best Regional University in America,” “The Year of Cleveland,” and “The Year of Health and Wellness in the Delta.” “Results come by way of concerted efforts and focused attentions, and I believe these year-long themes force us to magnify those specific areas,” Hilpert explained. “I believe we can make lasting impacts this way.” His tenure would confirm that, as during “The Year of Cleveland,” Delta State celebrated its 80th academic year recognizing the rich relationship it has had with its host community, Cleveland. The community rallied together in time of need, as after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the Gulf Coast regions, community and campus citizens acted quickly to offer food, clothing, shelter, and financial help. His most recent program, “Health and Wellness in the Delta” has allowed thousands access to free educational programs and testing, in the form of Delta Health and Wellness Day, a breast cancer awareness forum and Dr. Hilpert’s own leadership of the Delta Health Alliance (DHA), a collaborative partnership comprised of Delta State, Mississippi State University, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Mississippi Valley State University and Delta Council, aimed at promoting programs of health education, health research and increasing the availability and ease of access to health care in the Delta region. He will serve as president of the DHA through June 2008. Under Dr. Hilpert’s leadership, Delta State has also experienced expansive development, most notably in the area of student enrollment, with the fall 2006 enrollment figures marking the largest in school history. Additionally, Delta State boasts a ten percent increase over a five-year enrollment period. Other credits during his tenure include: Delta State’s accreditation was reaffirmed by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in December 2005; the University announced the conclusion of its highlysuccessful, five-year “Wings & Roots: Let our Legacy Soar” fundraising campaign, with the final tally capping at $37,025,042, an amount that tripled the campaign’s initial goal and stands as the largest collection of private support in the history of the university. As shown in the Education Trust and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ recent research Delta State stands atop its peer group of institutions for the percentage of entering students who graduate within six years of first enrollment. The number of doctoral degrees conferred in 2004 doubled, while the number of undergraduate degrees conferred ranked tops among any other Carnegie master’s institution in the state. Further evidence in the University’s commitment to becoming “the best regional university in America,” is the advent of five additional academic majors to Delta State’s already diverse curriculum, including

athletic training and gaming management. Dr. Hilpert’s leadership has also seen heavy emphasis put toward the incorporation of classroom technology – a consistent theme on his presidential resume. As president of Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, from 1997 until he assumed the presidency of Delta State, integrating technology into the university’s academic programs was a major goal. Northern received legislative designation as the Center for Statewide E-learning in 2001, and today Northern offers daily classes to more than one-third of South Dakota’s school districts from ten studios on the campus. For seven years prior to his arrival at Northern, Dr. Hilpert served the University of South Dakota as Vice President for University Relations, and for an interim term as Acting President. He has also held senior administrative posts at Thiel College in Pennsylvania and at Finlandia University (formerly Suomi College) in Michigan, during the 28 years of his career in higher education. Dr. Hilpert earned his doctorate – a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration – from the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Michigan. During his doctoral studies, he was honored with the prestigious Brubacher Award for scholarship by the faculty of the University of Michigan. He earned both a Master of Divinity degree from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia Senior College in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He also holds a two-year diploma from St. Paul’s College in Missouri. Throughout his career, Dr. Hilpert has served various organizations on boards, task forces, and committees. He was appointed in 2004 by Governor Haley Barbour to serve on Mississippi’s Council for Education Technology. Dr. Hilpert and his wife, Pat, have been married for 35 years. Both grew up in Missouri, he in Cape Girardeau and she in St. Louis. They have three adult sons, Joshua (daughter Julia), Zachary, and Adam (wife Megan). Pat spent 27 years as a Registered Nurse, serving in different settings as a nurse administrator and educator. She is also a published photographer who has exhibited her creative works in a variety of galleries and won several awards, including one co-sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution and the South Dakota Department of Tourism.

statesmen sports network J.T. Webb will begin his fourth season as the “Voice of Lady Statesmen softball” and his sixth overall with the Statesmen Sports Network. He also handles color commentary for Delta State basketball and serves as the sideline reporter for the Statesmen football team as well. Webb is also in his third year as a student assistant in the Athletic Communications Office. He is the primary contact for Lady Statesmen softball, cross country, and tennis. The Clarksdale native is a Dean’s List recipient and is currently pursuing a degree in Sports Information. A graduate of Clarksdale High School, Webb is an avid sports radio fan and one day hopes to work in professional broadcasting.

Lady Statesmen fans can follow all the action of Delta State University softball this season on the Statesmen Sports Network. J.T. Webb anchors the broadcast as play-by-play announcer for a third-straight season. Alan Wiederhold and Oliver Mansour (first season) will serve as color analysts for Webb this season. Each broadcast begins with the SouthGroup Insurance Locker Room Report beginning 15 minutes before the start of each game. This season, the SSN will broadcast 25 regular season and all Gulf South Conference and NCAA postseason tournament games on the internet.
