The Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation An Investment in Leadership Second Century Challenge Campaign Completed with Fraternity's 150th Anniversary Year Winding up is the Second Century Challenge Campaign, a special project of the fraternity's 150th anniversary program. Included as special features of the Foundation campaign to add needed funds for programming: -Fifty-seven DUpdate events held in principal locations where there are concentrations of Delta Upsilon alumni; -Showing of the Foundation slide/sound presentation detailing the case and needs of the Foundation for the future; -Face-to-face contact with scores of Delta Upsilon alumni to give them information about the stepped-up Foundation projects; -Opening of the Hall of Honor at the fraternity headquarters to give special recognition to all those who contributed to the success of the Second Century Challenge and who are future donors to the Foundation.
Foundation recognition certificate honoring their participation, by undergraduate members, in the work of the Foundation.
Undergraduate Participation Significant Factor
New Foundation Leadership Elected at April Meeting
Starting in 1981, the Foundation commenced mailing its Monthly Progress Report to every undergraduate chapter president in an attempt to fully inform chapter leaders about the programs, activities and plans of the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation. Participation in the Foundation/Chapter program began in 1982, with the achievement of the objective of having every undergraduate member participate in 1984. Each chapter receives a
At the April meeting of the trustees of the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation, Maurice S. Mandel, Chicago '55, was elected the new chairman of the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation. Mandel, who chairs the fraternity's investment subcommittee and is a member of the fraternity's board of directors, immediately began to challenge the trustees to make more face-to-face contacts with alumni; and set the example by doing just that within days of his election.
Treasurer Donald C. Rasmussen, Purdue '46, left, presents Maurice S. Mandel, Chicago '55, Chairman of the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation, with a check for $16,700 representing donations of 3,340 undergraduates to the Foundation for the 1984- '85 year.
Bringing the message and understanding about the vital and necessary role of the Foundation to members of the Fraternity is obviously a high priority with the new chairman. Elected as a trustee of the Foundation was William Wallace III, Union '48, who is chairman and chief executive officer of Ebasco Services, Inc., and was a recipient of the Fraternity's Distinguished Alumni Medallion at the 150th anniversary leadership conference last year. Continuing as officers of the Foundation are vice-chairman W. D. Watkins, North Carolina '27; treasurer David A. Krebs, Miami '80; secretary Herbert E. Smith, Indiana '52; and trustees Bruce S. Bailey, Denison '58; Charles F. Jennings, Marietta '31; Howard Kahlenbeck, Jr., Indiana '52;
J. Paul McNamara, Miami '29; O . Edward Pollock, Virginia '51 ; Charles D. Prutzman, Pennsylvania State '18 and Nelson Shaenen, Cornell '50. Wilford A. Butler, CAE, Western Michigan '61, is executive director of the Foundation.
Hall of Honor Grows With Your Gifts The Thorton B. Penfield plaque, reserved for listing undergraduate chapter contributions, honors the first alumnus volunteer field visitor, Thornton B. Penfield, Columbia 1890. Brother Penfield visited Delta Upsilon chapters from 1901 to 1910. In addition to this chapter contributions plaque, there are plaques in each of the major giving categories. Donors to the Educational Foundation Second Century Challenge Fund are listed below according to the various giving societies. THE DELTA UPSILON 1834 SOCIETY Gifts of $100 to $499 Horace L. A major objective of the Foundation is to secure sufficient funding to improve the number of .attendees and days for the annual leadership conference. A significant gift of $100,000 is sought to name the Delta Upsilon Leadership Conference. Funding to improve the regional leadership conference program is also required, and a gift of $50,000 will enable the donor to name the seven regional leadership seminars. There are many other programs that require funding and trustees of the Foundation will be pleased to discuss projects that may be of interest to prospective donors. Contact the Foundation administrative headquarters at the International Fraternity Headquarters for additional details and information: Post Office Box 40108, Indianapolis, IN 46240-0108. I AM ALPHA AND OMEGA, THE BEGINNING
Report of the Treasurer . Careful Management Produces Improved Results For the fiscal year ending June 30, 1985, the Delta Upsilon Fraternity had an excess of operating income over operating expenses of some $59,000. It has been several years since we have been able to report such an outstanding record. The explanation for this year's success is that several income items improved greatly, our collection of funds due to the Fraternity by the undergraduate chapters was more effective and a continuing program of cost control of expense items all worked together to present this fine result. It would be improper not to express appreciation to the Chairman , the Executive Director and his staff for their time and cooperation in attending to the stewardship of our limited funds. In our budgeting, we projected that we could increase our operating income by some $30,000 while our realized figure was right at $85,000. We continue to benefit from the resurgence of interest in fraternities on the college campus and at the same time our undergraduate brothers increased our pledge and initiation fee income by almost 9%. The reinstalled membership fee for the undergraduates is becoming a major component of our income statement. The alumni support program continues to report excellent growth and this year's total reached a new high of over $133,000 and this figure represents right at 19% of our operating income. The year-end membership of the President's Club increased by 12% to a record 491 members. For the eleventh year in a row the alumni of the Purdue Chapter have provided more contributions than any other chapter. One must realize that the cornerstone of the total finances of the Fraternity continues to be the revenues furnished by our undergraduates. We were pleased to notice that this year this income item increased by just under 9%. This year's grant from the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation helped defray the expenses of the annual Leadership Confer-
72
ence, the Regional Leadership Seminars and the Presidents' Forums. As our endowment funds increase, we are hopeful that more of the income may be gifted to the International Fraternity to be used for additional educational programming. Please keep in mind that a careful analysis of our total financial resources would indicate that the appropriate size for our Permanent Trust Fund would be about three million dollars above our present level. In the statement of functional expenses you may notice that $212,000 or 31 % of our total expenditures were allocated to services for the undergraduates and the chapters. This figure does not include the $81,000 utilized for the Convention, Leadership Seminars, the Assembly of Trustees meeting and other related activities. Together these two items comprise more than 43% of our total expenses. Our independent accountants, Price Waterhouse, have certified our audited financial statements that are a part of this report. We shall continue to follow the guidelines of the American Institute ofCertified Public Accountants for not-for-profit organizations. In summary, we have just completed a very successful financial year in the glorious history of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. We must be ever vigilant to the rising costs of running an outstanding organization such as our Fraternity as many of our major competitors are not reporting a positive financial record for 1984-'85. We shall continue to prudently manage our well conceived financial programs and ask that each one of you continue your loyal support. Of course, it would be most appreciated if more of you alumni would join our giving programs. I deem it an honor to serve as your treasurer.
DONAIJD C. Treasurer
