Florida Chapter Wins Sweepstakes at Convention This annual Chapter Awards report marks a departure from past October announcements. We will feature photos for our award-winning chapteTS in the Quarterly this year. The chapters have received prints to use in their alumni newsletters and local publications. But we will feature these chapteTS throughout the year, with details on why they won, and how they built their successful programs to bring honor to Delta Upsilon. All award-winning chapteTS must meet minimum DU chapter standards, be in good standing with their institution, and be current in accounts with the general Fraternity. Our Recognition FTOgram encourages the development of new chapter pTOgrams, then spreads these new and successful ideas. Of course, we also want to recognize those chapters who have planned carefully and worked hard to impTOve the Delta Upsilon experience for their members. We begin with our Achievement Sweepstakes Award recipient, the Florida Chapter.

Having won the Chapter Relations Award for the past two years, the Florida Chapter noted in its August 1985 issue of the Delta Upsilon Digest: " . .. being recognized by International is the kind of encouragement we need to progress even further forward ." Apparently it works; the Florida Chapter is Delta Upsilon's most outstanding chapter for 1985-'86. Good chapter relations thrived again this year. The list of chapter and individual participation in volunteer and charity events filled four pages. The chapter sponsored a Grand Slam Softball Tournament, with $1,650 in prize money going to philanthropies of three winning sororities. The chapter also raised more than $2,000 of the $12,000 total for the Florida Greek Week cancer philanthropy, and had the highest participation in the annual blood drive. Programs and publi-

cations for parents and alumni were timely, well-planned, nicely printed and effective. In finances, the chapter approved a detailed budget, listing all items of expected income and expense, then used it to monitor and control spending. The result: surpluses each semester were put into special savings funds for future chapter house renovations. Chapter initiations were scheduled months in advance and resulted in great (70 percent!) parent and alumni attendance. Complete chapter and executive minutes are typed and posted. The chapter newsletter, the DU Digest, is filled with alumni news and word on future events, as well as thorough coverage (including photos) of alumni corporation meetings. The alumni corporation is farsighted and involves enough men to spread tasks around. In scholarship, required pledge study hours were in part responsible for the chapter ranking 3rd of 33 campus fraternities . The Florida Chapter also excels in sending required reports to International Headquarters. Officers

regularly write with thoughtful, sincere questions on chapter problems. Obviously, our Florida brothers attack every problem with a mature, sincere attitude: They get all the facts, make tentative plans, adjust them after advice from alumni and International, then move ahead and succeed . This chapter has taken our Fraternity'S ideals and purposes to heart, and puts them into action. All DUs can be proud of Florida, as our outstanding chapter for 1985-'86.

crhe President's GReport With great joy I report to you on two of the many happy developments which occurred at our recent International Convention developments which bring high hopes for the future of our Fraternity and, in turn, for our society, First, a tragic wrong of over 30 years ago, committed during a difficult time in our Fraternity and in our society, has finally been at least somewhat righted. In 1955, the Brown Chapter designated its president as one of its delegates to the International Convention then scheduled for Middlebury, The president they named was certified simply as "Gus White," But as it developed, Gus White was not white and rather than face an expected confrontation, the leadership of the Fraternity simply cancelled the Convention! The following year, the Convention censored the Brown Chapter for initiating a person "not socially acceptable" to the rest of the Fraternity, In due course, the Brown Chapter withdrew from the Fraternity and the whole affair was allowed by the Fraternity to fade into history, The current officers of the Fraternity only recently learned of these past events during the discussions which led to the reaffiliation of the Brown Chapter. It was, frankly, difficult for us at first to believe that these events had happened - especially in view of our unique h eritage and tradition of open membership, a policy which has resulted today in a wonderful membership including every race, et~~ic group, religion and national ongll1, But it did occur and the wrong screamed for redress from the pages of our history, Consequently, I contacted Brown University officials and asked them, "do you know where Gus White is today?" We wanted to make amends both to him and to his courageous classmates who supported him so long ago, The administrator at Brown chuckled when I asked this ques-

tion , and said, "yes, we know where Gus White is!" For, you see, this man who some once thought "socially unacceptable" was not only one of the finest DU presidents Brown had ever had and a star of the University football team, but in rapid succession he had graduated at the top of his class from Brown; graduated from Stanford Medical School; completed a brilliant residency at Yale (where he later became Professor of Orthopaedics and established the Engineering Laboratory of Musculoskeletal Diseases); earned a second doctorate in science .from Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden (where his research was in the biomechanics of the spine); became Chair Professor of Orthopaedics at the Harvard Medical School and the Harvard/MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology ; became Chief Surgeon of Orthopaedics at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, a major Harvard teaching hospital; and completed the Advanced Health Care Management Program at the Harvard Business College (where he was selected by the class to be the commenceme nt speaker), In addition, Gus White (now Dr. Augustus A, White, III) became a member of the Fellows of Brown and Chairman of the Brown Board of Trustees . Convention Adopts Alcohol Policy This responsible and far-th inking policy was adopted by the Undergraduate Delegates to the 152nd Conven tion of Delta Upsilon. It has taken effect, and chapter members and professional DU staff are now working to implement it. This policy is a firm step toward reducing the harmful effects of alcohol and drug abuses which could occur in some chapters. The following policy has been adopted by the l52nd Convention held August 22, 1986 in St. Louis, Missouri and is now in effect. DELTA UPSILON FRATERNITY A Resolution on Alcohol and Substance Use WHEREAS, since the passage of "A Resolution on Alcohol Awareness" by the 151st Convention, some chapters, members and pledges of Delta Upsilon Fraternity have made commendable progress in promoting the responsible use of alcohol; and WHEREAS, further progress in this effort is essential to assure the health, safety and survival of the Fraternity, its chapters and its members; and

help our members excel in their chosen careers and professions; and subject our Fraternity, our chapters, and our alumni and undergraduate members to legal

liability, both corporate and personal, for the harmful consequences of these activities; and WHEREAS, the responsibilities of membership in Delta Upsilon Fraternity, as we have promised in our solemn Oath, require that we endeavor to perfect ourselves morally, intellectually, and socially, and to act towards others according the high standards of conduct of our Fraternity; that we use all honorable means to promote the interests of our Fraternity and of our Chapters; and that we uphold and encourage our brothers in all that is honorable and right; and WHEREAS, Delta Upsilon Fraternity must take the lead in educating our members about the dangers presented by these and other forces affecting the health and safety of our members; and about their personal legal liability for the harmful consequences of their failure to confront and control the irresponsible and abusive use of alcohol and harmful substances at chapter events and on chapter property; BE IT THEREFORE RESOLYED, that this 152nd Convention of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity hereby declares the following policy on the use of alcohol and harmful substances:

WHEREAS, many of our fellow fraternities and their chapters and members have been involved in litigation which consumes precious time, energy and resources, both personal and fmancial, as a result of alleged irresponsible and abusive use of alcohol and harmful substances; and

I. No Delta Upsilon chapter shall carry out any event or activity, including the provision of beer or other alcoholic beverages, that violates any rule or regulation of the college or university, or that violates any law of the local municipality, or of the state or province, or of the nation.

WHEREAS, irresponsible and abusive use of alcohol and harmful substances, if permitted, will inevitably impair the health, safety and welfare of our members; diminish our ability as a Fraternity to

national Fraternity to contribute in every way to Brown's Investment in Diversity Program and other similar programs elsewhere, h e and his classmates willingly and graciously accepted our invitation to reconcile. Brother White came to our Convention in St. Louis to lead the new Brown delegation in its first convention following reaffiliation and to receive the Fraternity's highest honor, its Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. Following the presentation, Brother White gave a brilliant address, truly inspiring to all in attendance. The Convention then gave Brother White the longest standing ovation in my memory, and unanimously rescinded the resolution of 1956. And so this sad story has a happy ending which, I believe, foretells the commencement of a new and beautiful chapter in the history of our Fraternity. Second, in response to the concern expressed in my last letter and from the scores of alumni who wrote to endorse that concern, I am immensely pleased to report that the undergraduates adopted a

alumni award for service to mankind. His other honors include: the Jaycees' "Ten Outstanding Young Men" Award; the Martin Luthd King, Jr. Medical Achievement Award; the Kappa Delta Award for Outstanding Orthopaedic Research; and the Eastern Orthopaedic Award for Spine Research. He is a recipient of the Bronze Star, which he earned while stationed as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Vietnam, and where he did extensive volunteer work in a leper colony. To make a long story short, we contacted Brother White, expressed the profound apology of the Fraternity, and asked him to consider a full and personal reconciliation. When Brother White learned of our current pluralistic membership and our interest in promoting diversity and warm relations among all members of humankind and of the willingness of the Brown Chapter and the Inter-

Any chapter event involving the legal use of alcohol shall not involve providing unlimited quantities of alcohol; nor shall the event or activity. encourage the rapid consumption of alcohol; 'nor shall any person participating in the event or activity be forced for any reason to consume alcohol.

4. All Delta Upsilon chapter rush events shall be "dry," meaning that no beer or alcoholic beverages shall be provided by the chapter or by any person, except where "wet rush" is permitted by university regulations and law. 5. All Delta Upsilon chapters shall implement an alcohol awareness program which encourages temperance and responsibility among those members who are legally pennilted to drink beer or alcoholic beverages. The alcohol awareness program shall be conducted on a continuing basis, to educate the members of Delta Upsilon Fraternity, and to protect their health and safety. The program shall convey responsibility for the activities of other members regarding alcohol use, and shall encourage active intervention to prevent any person at any

chapter event or activity from either drinking to excess, or from engaging in any potentially dangerous activity, including driving a motor vehicle, while under the influence of alcohol. 6. No Delta Upsilon chapter shall permit the existence of any hazardous or unsafe condition on

chapter property, or-on any property used for a chapter event or activity, which poses an unreasonable risk to the health and safety of any person, whether or not invited onto the property. 7. All Delta Upsilon chapters and alumni corporations shall adopt policies for the use of chapter property and the conduct of chapter events and activities in keeping with the leIter and spirit of this resolution. A copy of the chapter and alumni corporation policies shall be subrnitted to the Headquarters of the Fratemity.

new strict drug and alcohol abuse policy. It should be an excellent beginning in turning our Fraternity onto a new path of social and scholarly responsibility. The text of that resolution will appear elsewhere in the Quarterly. I am writing to all college presidents and to all presidents of other fraternities seeking their endorsement of this policy. With their help we can make this exciting new development a trend on all campuses. I want to thank each of you who wrote for your support and to urge you to continue to write. Your letters are very influential with the officers and the undergraduates of the Fraternity alike. All in all, it looks like we have turned two important corners in the history of our Fraternity and that the promise for the coming year is bright indeed.

Delta U Selects Hansen as New Executive Director Afle1' considering rnany qualified applicants, the B oanl of Directors of Delta Upsilon Fraternity chose Thomas D. Hansen, Iowa State 1979, as Executive Director. He succeeds W. A. B utler, Jr., CAE, Western Michigan '61, who gave our Fraternity 24 years of dedicated seTvice and leadership. Torn Hansen earned bachelor's degrees in journalism and political science. As an unde1graduate, he was active in rnany campus O1ganizations and held several chapter offices. He was editor-in-chief of his college newspaper and wOl'ked as a Congressional pl'ess secretary in Washington, D.C. After wOl'king three yean as a daily newspaper reporter, he entered law school at the University of Iowa, graduating with distinction in 1985 . He spent the last year as a law clerk for 12 state judges in northeast Iowa, and is a mernber of the Iowa State and Amel'ican bar associations. He has been Executive Director of Delta Upsilon since July 7. Brother Butler will rernain as Executive Director Emeritus through December. The search committee was ably chaired by BTather RichardA. Moran, Rutgers '72. Delta Upsilon Fraternity is grateful for the time and effort of the entire comrnittee.

After three months as Executive Director, I can see that our quest for excellence in Delta Upsilon Fraternity will be a reality, at every level and at every chapter and colony.

Alumni and undergraduates have expressed overwhelming support and confidence - by mail, by telephone and at our Leadership Conference and Convention in St. Louis. At every turn, men are discussing how Delta Upsilon can be stronger in the years to come. There has been no limit to our members' ideas for improving our Fraternity, nor to their willingness to work hard to make it happen. Our task is simple: We must see that every member demands the very best, of himself, his chapter and his :Fraternity. Each DU undergraduate must make the most of his college years. He must seize the chance DU provides to learn to organize and to lead. He must understand our ideals and values, which will help him develop into a responsible and sought-after member of his profession and his community. Each DU alumnus must similarly demand of himself his best possible commitment to our Fraternity. The level of involvement will vary, as each alumnus has different career and family obligations. But each of us must see how we can improve our Fraternity in this time of changes and challenges. Today, we need to reaffirm our values and high standards, and see that they are shared by all our members: integrity, hard work, high self-esteem, and excellence in our chosen careers.

New General Directory Planned For the first time since 1929, the Board of Directors of Delta Upsilon Fraternity has authorized the publication of an Official Alumni Directory. The Fraternity has selected the Bernard C. Harris Publishing Company of White Plains, New York, well-known publishers of alumni directories for major colleges, universities, private schools and fraternities, to be the official publisher. These are all facets of our founding principles of character, culture, friendship and justice. Together, we can make these principles come alive, so that each chapter will be a place of pride and honor, and that each man will be proud of his heritage and a credit to his Fraternity . The words of Charles Evans Hughes, Colgate and Brown 1881, are appropriate here, as they were in 1909 when he addressed a group of Colgate alumni and Phi Beta Kappa honorees: " . .. Delta Upsilon stamps a man nine times out of ten as an earnest man .... This is the spirit of Delta Upsilon, good times, fellowship, social enjoyment, manliness and purpose to get the truly best there is in the world." Let us thrive in this earnest spirit, in this quest for excellence, and "get the truly best there is" from Delta Upsilon. I am honored and excited to have been chosen as Executive Director, and I promise to each member of our Fraternity my very best efforts to protect and further its interests across our continent.

Tight Control of Expenses Strengthens DU Finances; Income Declines 1985-'86 For the fiscal year ending June 30, 1986, am pleased to report the Delta Upsilon Fraternity had an excess of operating income over operating expenses o f approximately $42,000. This represents the second consecutive year that our Fraternity has operated "in the black." Much of the reason for this success can be attributed to a conscientious effort on the part of our fraternity staff to contain expenses. This cost containment program has proven to be especially important in view of the fact that our total revenues showed a moderate decline during this past year. For the first time in many years the revenue the Fraternity received from our undergraduate chapters showed a decline of approximately 10% both in the number of new pledges and initiates and the related ,income from those members when compared to the prior year. While a change of this nature is reason for concern, I am encouraged with the installation of several colp nies as Delta Upsilon chapters as well as , new colonizations at several universities . We have also begun efforts to revitalize our approach in identifying new university locations for future sites of Delta Upsilon chapters in order to stem any further declines of this nature. Many of our other sources of revenue for the Fraternity were successfully maintained at stable levels when compared to the prior year. I am particularly pleased to report that alumni support, our second largest source of revenue after undergraduate fees , and the grant receivea from the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation remained virtually unchanged from the prior fiscal year. Similarly, revenue received from investment income, consisting of interest and dividends as well as net realized gains on the sale of securities remained level compared to the prior year. This is particularly noteworthy in light of the declining interest rate environment which has existed over the past year. Our investment subcommittee is to be commended. As I previously indicated, our Fraternity

staff has performed diligently in containing our expenses this past year. Among the principal areas of cost reduction is the personnel related expenses associated with a reduced field staff and office support staff. This accounted for total reduction of over $55,000 from the prior year or a 15% reduction of those expenses. The aggregate of all other expenses were also approximately 2% lower than the prior year, accounting for a further cost savings of approximately $7,000. A substantial portion of the expenses incurred during fiscal '86 as in prior years, continued to be incurred to support specific programs of the Fraternity. These program related expenses accounted for approximately 73 % of the total expenses incurred during the past fiscal year. Included as a part of this report are the audited financial statements of the Fraternity which have been certified by our in dependent accountants, Price Waterhouse. In summary, while we came through fiscal '86 in relatively good financial condition, we are entering a year of change for the Fraternity. We need to continue to maintain a tight rein on our expenses while continuing to find new ways to generate revenues to support an aggressive agenda of new programs. The financial future of the Fraternity is more a function of the successes of each of us , both alumni and undergraduates, much more so than it is a function of anyone group of individuals. As such, I look to each of us to strive to achieve our personal best during a time of change and challenge. With such an effort I believe we will find ourselves and our Fraternity ready and able to thrive during the coming years. I look forward to working with each of you during the coming year to achieve our combined goals.

FUND OBJECTIVES AND ACCOUNTIN G POLI-

Delta Upsilon Frate rnity ("Fraternity") is an internationa l co llege fraternit y with headqu a rte rs located in India napolis, Indi a na, At June 30,1986 it has 88 undergradu ate chapters located throughout the United States and in Canada. Each chapter is a se parate corporate entity having its own bylaws and thus th eir financial position and revenues and expenses are not consolidated in the acco mpan ying fin ancia l statements of the inte rnation al fraternity. The various funds , all of which are unrestricted, are maintain ed in accordance with their objectives as determined by the prov isions of the Fraternity constitution and bylaws, These funds are as follows: Operating Fund - Accounts for income and expense from the general operations of the Fraternity. Educational Fund - The Delta Upsilon Educational Fund is a separate fund used exclusively for educational programs, purposes an d activities of the Fraternity, All gross income, except "exempt function in come" as d efi ned by the Intern al Reve nu e Code, is accounted fo r in this fund. Chapter Loan Fund - Accounts fo r funds ava ilable for loans to various chapters, Permanent Trust Fund - The permane nt trust fund balance represents a n investment portfolio primarily co mposed of stocks, bonds, and demand notes, In vestment in come accru es to th e Educational Fund. Gain or loss on the sale of securities accrues to the Permanent Trust Fund. The accounting records of th e Fraternity a re maintained o n the accrual basis in accordance with accounting principles for not-forprofit organizations. The following is a summary of the more significant accounting policies: Pledge, initiation and membership fees - Pledge, 1IlitIatIo n and membership fee income are recognized when paid by the chapter. Marketable securities - Marketable equity securities are recorded at the lower of cost or market. Marketable d ebt securities , which the fraternity inte nds to ho ld until matur ity, are recorded a t amortized cost. Pro/Jerty and equipment - Properties owned by the Fraternity are stated at cost and d e preciated using th e straight-line method over th eir es timated useful lives as follows: Headqu arte rs building and improvements Land improvements Office equ ipment

All nonmembership inco me, primarily investme nt income, is subj ect to federal income tax , except to th e exte nt such income is utilized for the tax exe mpt purposes of the Fraternity. NOTE 2 -

Investment transactions are made from time to time based on the advice of the Fraternity's investment committee and its advisors. Based on a study by the Fraternity of their anticipated cash requirements , the Fraternity believes it will be able to hold marketable bonds and debentures until maturity by meeting cash requirements through the operations of the Fraternity and use of other mal~ ketable securities. NOTES RECEIVABLE FROM CHAPTERS:

Certain notes receivable from chapters in the amount of$217 ,754 bear interest at 8.5% to 13% per year and are due in varying installments through 2005 . A majority of the notes are fully or partially secured by mortgages on chapter properties. NOTE 4 -

LEASES:

Delta Upsilon leases certain office equipment under a capital lease. Future minimum lease payments remaining under this equipment lease at June 30, 1986 are $6,687 (1987) and $9,019 (1988). Included in such payments are $2,718 of interest costs.

PENSION PLAN:

During the fiscal year, the Fraternity amended its pension plan. Previously, the assets of the plan were dedicated individual annuity insurance policies which accumulated cash surrender values. The policies were surrendered and placed in a general trust account for the benefit of all plan participants . Under the amended plan, trustees were appointed and have the power to invest assets of the plan as they deem advisable. The plan continues as a contributory defined benefit plan and is available to all employees who have one year of service, have attained the age of 21 years and agree to make the required employee contributions. Pension costs are funded as accrued and were $10,024 and $10,175 for 1986 and 1985, respectively. The rate of interest used to calculate the actuarial present value of accumulated plan benefits was 7.5%. Accumulated plan benefits, as of the most recent valuation, are :

FUNDS HELD FOR INACTIVE CHAPTER:

In fiscal 1981, Delta Upsilon Fraternity sold the Kent State chapter house which the Fraternity had been deeded upon suspension of that chapter. The buyer financed the purchase with the Fraternity in the form of a promissory note and second mortgage bearing interest at 9%, for eight years or less, with payments based upon a twenty-five year amortization. If the Kent State chapter is reestablished before 1990, it is the intention of the Fraternity to remit an amount equal to the net proceeds from the sale to the chapter. NOTE 7 -

CONTINGENT LIABILITIES:

The Fraternity has guaranteed certain liabilities for five of its chapters. At June 30, 1986 guarantees were outstanding on approximately $250,000 of such liabilities.

DU Annual Alumni Honor Roll Here are the 20 chapters of Delta Upsilon which had the greatest numbers of alumni contributing to the DU Annual Honor Roll of Donors to the International Fraternity's Alumni Support Campaign for the year ending June 30, 1986. The table shows, from left to right, the current year's ranking; the chapter and the last year's ranking in parentheses; and the number of donors with the change from last year in parentheses. Carnegie showed the greatest increase in both the rankings and in numbers of donors, while Northwestern and Nebraska tied for the second greatest increase in both categories. Purdue, for the 11th straight year, leads the field in total donors. Only ten of our Top 20 Chapters showed an increase in number of donors over the previous year.
