Schwitters to lead Supercollider lab The newest national laboratory in the Department of Energy is directed by a DU who now oversees development of a $6 billion atomic research facility. . Dr. Roy F. Schwitters, Technology '66, has been appointed Director of the Superconducting Supercollider, which will be built in the next nine years on a site 25 miles south of Dallas. Brother Schwitters was named this spring to head the new laboratory after almost a decade as Professor of Physics at Harvard University, and another eight years of
work with the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in Palo Alto, CaL Brother Schwitters is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, advises several scientific and government agencies, and has written, edited and advised several scientific journals. He will oversee construction of a $5.9 billion project, with a 53mile ring of 10,000 superconducting magnets that will form the world's largest subatomic particle acclerator. About 3,500 people will work to construct the SSC, with permanent staff estimated at 2,500.

Hayes lauded as new California state treasurer California's newest state treasurer was criticized by some as lacking the "right" political connections when appointed last January. But Thomas W. Hayes, Oregon State and San Jose '68, has moved quickly to quash the naysayers, by ending some wining and dining practices of his predecessor, and instituting a competiting system to select bond counsels and underwriters. In his first six months as State Treasurer, Brother Hayes has applied skills developed as Auditor General of the state since 1979. In that position, he conducted the
largest single financial audit of a government entity in U.S. history. A former Marine officer who saw combat in Vietnam, Brother Hayes was initiated by the Oregon State Chapter in 1965, then transferred to San Jose State University, He earned his MBA there and in 1981 was awarded the national Scantlebury Memorial Award for distin. guished financial management leadership. In 1985 he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from SJSU. Brother Hayes was appointed State Treasurer after the death of former TreasurerJesse M. Unruh.

Leadership Institute reaches 450 DUs 2 'Distinguished DUs' named; new policies approved Unusual humidity and recalcitrant air conditioning systems were all that dampened the spirits of more than 450 DUs at the Leadership Institute in August. From naming a new Distinguished DU at the Opening Convocation Thursday night, to naming the best DU chapters at Saturday's awards ceremony, the mood was electric throughout the weekend. More than 350 undergraduates began arriving the morning of Thursday the 3rd. Besides perusing the schedule of 50 educational events over the next few days, and looking over a new selection of DU items in the "Duck Shoppe," they learned of actions by the Undergraduate Advisory Board (UGAB) the day before. First came news of the election of three undergraduates to the Board of Directors: Christopher L. Miller, Miami '90, re-elected to a second term, and two juniors, Barton B. Hooper, Missouri '91, and William H. K. Mooney, McGill '91. The UGAB also asked for more news about alumni and undergraduates in Fraternity publications, sought assistance on a range of plans to obtain chapter housing, and recommended that Convention adopt all policy statements it had approved the prior year. 'N ourish competent people' The Opening Convocation featured the naming of one of two Distinguished DUs during the weekend. R. Gordon McGovern, Brown '48, reflected on what Delta U did for him on his way to becoming President and CEO of the Campbell Soup Co. Life at Brown after the war brought together men "out to get an education and participate in the world around them. I'm sure it was a world full of flaws which I didn't appreciate then and have forgotten now," he said. "But over the year's I've watched DU push men down the important trails of high

scholarship attainment and strong community involvement, wrapped around personal friendships." Lessons learned through DU at Brown had to do with people relationships , Brother McGovern said: "Teamwork, the ability to listen to a broad range of viewpoints, a sense of empathy for another person's position, an ability to melt differing viewpoints into simple achievable objectives, and understanding that there are important value systems at hand besides instant gratification, and a notion that the proof of the pudding isn't cake or intention or excuses but solid, achieved results in things that matter. "Another aspect of fraternity life at Brown was the responsibility placed on the members to elect capable officers, and, even more importantly, to select from a sea of humanity pledge classes that would continue to strengthen the Fraternity," Brother McGovern said. "No other aspect of business is more important than the ability to select and nourish competent people and to provide a continuous flow of talent for the organization." Brother McGovern said that keeping his personal and business objectives close at hand served him well, and that as he developed his skills to help the organization and his community, remuneration "took care of itself." The more you give, the more will be given unto you," "and what you get may be love, or peace of mind, or understanding. It doesn't have to be colored green to be valuable." Solid core curriculum In the second day, undergraduates attended a core curriculum in the Michigan Union as 100 alumni delegates continued to arrive. President Sam Yates and Chairman Karl Huntoon led off with a thorough overview of issues and priorities of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Brother Craig Franz, a member of the Fraternity's Board

The new member manual, The Cornerstone, was distributed in the form of a limited edition for Leadership Institute delegates. The men eagerly crowded around the members of the Member Manual Committee in attendance, seeking autographs for their copy. Then Will Keim, Pacific '75, who has spoken to half a million undergraduates on 500 campuses in the past five years, reminded men of their true mission in college and the true purposes of Delta Upsilon with a rousing hour's discussion. After lunch, undergraduates scattered to a dozen different educational and leadership seminars in Angell Hall on campus. Meanwhile, alumni convened for the Alumni Institute portion of the weekend, gaining insight into the new Alumni Chapter program for DU quality. John Kinkade, Colorado '68, chairman of the Alumni Chapter Committee, led alumni through the three-part mission of Alumni Chapters: managing chapter prop-

The evening's program began with dinner for 450 at the Michigan League, and DU delegates turned out in fine style. Before introduction of the keynote speaker, the dinner was blessed with the musical talents of L. Mark Anderson, San Jose '86. Joining the Leadership Institute for the second year in a row, Mark showed why he earned a Fulbright Scholarship to study piano in Europe with stunning renditions of pieces by Schumann, Scarlotti and Mozart to rousing applause and demands for an encore, which he performed. Presentation of a number of scholarship awards followed, and then Brothers Yates and Huntoon presented the other Distinguished DU award to Dr. James B. Holderman, Denison '58, President of the University of South Carolina, with the assistance of Chad Poteat, South Carolina '89, a member of Brother Holderman's staff. In accepting the award, Brother Holderman reviewed the challenges of technology and modern society for which leaders - men graduating from our colleges DELTA UPSILON QUARTERLY'
must prepare. Fraternities have a far more important role to play than teaching social skills. "Education has a lot to do, and young people have a lot to handle. Fraternities claim they can be a big part of this," Brother Holderman said. "If things worked out ideally, college presidents could simply turn Greek organizations loose to inspire scholarship, promote school loyalty, help the sick, maybe even help with parking and football. "But we do promise a lot with our words and values," he said. "But we can't always carry through on these words somehow. For whatever reason, we fall short." When fraternities don't live up to their purposes, they must deal with problems like hazing, sexism, racism, alcohol abuse, and others. "but since the 18th century and all that's happened, fraternities have survived. It's because at the critical moments, members have the courage to stand up for their principles," he said. "You need to stand for the things you promise to be, notjusrby your words but by your works. As future leaders, you've already discovered this. You will learn to stand on your own in times of controversy, testing your will. You will take risks and discover self-confidence. You will have to have the character to en-

The evening concluded with Convention. The Credentials Committee stirred up interest with a report that barred more than 20 chapters from voting because of delinquent accounts with the Fraternity. When the dust settled, 19 chapters could not vote, but a quorum was ready for the work at hand. (continued on next page)

Leadership Institute In rapid order, Convention approved policies passed the previous year but set aside for a year's study by Assembly. Among them were policies to: -Recommend that no chapter spend funds to purchase alcohol. -Urging chapters with men using illegal drugs to require them to
get counseling, and to suspend or expel violators; and banning any illegal drug on chapter property or at chapter events. '-Embracing the all-men's average as the goal for each DU chapter average gradepoint, and outlining steps the Fraternity should use to raise academic performance in chapters falling below that mark. -Encouraging the pledging of legacies. -Fighting hazing by endorsing the combination of chapter education and enforcement set forth
by Board resolutions on hazing last April. -Condemn any sort of sexual harrassment or sexual abuse by DU pledges or members. -Asking each chapter to sponsor at least one community service or philanthropic project and to participate in at least two each year. Convention also asked Assembly to endorse study of a comprehensive risk management and chapter insurance program. It further voted after some debate to require DU chapters with so-called ,"little sister" programs to immediately suspend recruitment of new "little sisters" and to terminate such programs within two academic years. All these policies and resolutions were approved by Assembly on Saturday, and have been distributed to chapters and Alumni Chapter officers this fall. DePauw takes Sweepstakes Saturday was filled with more educational sessions for alumni and undergraduates alike, and with the meeting of assembly Saturday afternoon. The combination of Assembly with the Leadership Institute, for the second year after 78 years of meeting separately, continued to pay dividends in joint educational seminars and the chance to meet men from across the continent. For many chapters, the Awards Convocation Saturday night was a highlight. Following Brother Keirn's keynote remarks, charters were presented to the new chapters at Guelph and Northern Colorado. Then the certificates and trophies for excellence in scholarship, rush, chapter and campus activities and
overall quality went out, conclud~ ing with the naming of the Top Seven Chapters, and finally, presenting the Sweepstakes Trophy to DePauw for the second year in a row. As the Leadership Institute wound down oil Sunday morning with a handful of educational seminars, delegates headed for home knowing that they could reconvene a year down the road at another Big Ten campus, as the University of Illinois was announced as the site of the Leadership Institute on August 2-5, 1990. We'll have to see, though, if our three-year streak of "predicting" the NCAA men's basketball champion continues into 1990! -Tom Hansen

"We have one Z particle. It was made Tuesday morning. We found it this morning." That simple announcement by a DU marked a huge step in the pursuit of what is believed to be a key to understanding the birth of the universe. Michael Riordan, Technology '68, is a physicist at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center near Stanford University in Palo Alto, Cal., and also science information officer. His announcement of the April discovery at the $125 million center was hailed by physicists as a milestone in research aimed at understanding conditions that may have existed in the first instants after the "big bang," which scientists believe formed the universe perhaps 20 billion years ago. Brother Riordan reported that the Z particle helps explain forces that bind matter together, and also cause it to decay radioactively. The linear accelerator slams electrons and positrons together at nearly the speed of light. Its Z-particle achievement bested a large European research center scheduled to open this summer, costing eight times what the Stanford center costs. Brother Riordan has written three books, including The Hunting of the Quark, featured in a recent Quarterly issue.
Theodore R. Boehm '60, the Indianapolis lawyer hired in the fall of 1988 to begeneral counsel for General Electric's major appliance business, is transferring to a GE division in Cincinnati. He will be vice president and chief counsel for GE's aircraft engine bus iness. DePauw David B. Brittain '51 is a biology professor at Ripon College and a stress management specialist, having given presentations at hospitals in the Ripon area as well as Scotland and England. Richard W. Hynson '75 has been nominated for DePauw's Young Alumnus award. He is music director of the Bel Canto Chorus of Milwaukee and served in the same capacity for ten seasons with the Cincinnati Choral Society and five seasons with the Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra. John P. Isenbarger '45 has been elected chairman of the board of directors of Muncie Federal Savings and Loan Association. Purdue's Perspective notes the promotion of Dr. John S. McConnell '66 to Assistant Vice President for Development at Purdue. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the International Fraternity. Harry E. Rhoads, Jr. '71 is president of Washington Speakers Bureau Inc., reportedly the second-largest speakers' bureau in the nation. In February Thomas A. Trowbridge'85, a senior at Northwestern University Dental School, received the American College of Dentists' Award of Merit in recognition of his leadership and scholarly achievement. absorb the bacteria and pollutants. He has created an experimental, artificial wetland near the lake. Measured in feet, the prototype is a year old, and researchers say that, so far, it has been a success, and could lead to the rebuilding of such areas along much of the lake.

Wisconsin As mentioned in the October 1988 Qual'tel'iy, Michael J. Lessiter '91 was working on his second book. "The College Names of the Games" was published in April by Contemporary Books. This book deals with how the Division I colleges came up with their particular school nicknames. The 112-page book contains team histories, anecdotes, information and cartoons.
Alumni events for late fall Alumni of the Maine Chapter have arranged for students to board in the former chapter house during the coming academic year. Fall alumni events will be held elsewhere on campus. Efforts to revive the chapter are proceeding in communication with University officials, following loss of recognition of the chapter because of a hazing incident. The boarding operation will retain Ms. Val Kinnerson, longtime DU cook, to provide meals to boarders. Treasurer reports deficit smaller than budgeted Dear Brothers, In this my final report to you as treasurer, I am pleased to state that our Fraternity had a better than anticipated year. The history of the past three years is that the Board of Directors set a goal of improving a variety of services and functions of Delta U psilon. To accomplish this, they expected that we would have to exceed available income, and operate at a deficit. The good news is that while we expected a deficit in the range of $60,000, the actual deficit is about $39,000. On page 109 are excerpts of the June 30, 1989 fi108
nancial statement. I take further comfort in the fact that $35,000 of the deficit was depreciation expense, which is not a cash item. The Executive Director and staff of our Fraternity deserve credit for keeping expenses under budget, while doubling the number of men travelling to DU chapters, installing a new in-house computer system, conducting 12 rather than 7 Regional Leadership Seminars, extending the use of the Seven Stars System, and overseeing the production of The CorneTStone, our new member manual. Our two major income sources
are member fees and alumni contributions. On the first point, we have for the fifth year in a row kept pledge, initiation and member fees the same. The total four-year cost for a man who pledges in the fall of his freshman year is only $275. Whether this no-increase trend can continue is a matter for some scrutiny. On the second point, we can celebrate the fact that the two Delta Upsilon Educational Foundations received more than $209,000 in contributions from almost 4,200 alumni - both new records - and (continued on next page)

provided support for Fraternity educational activities in a generous amount. New tools for the best DU experience Imagine connecting 450 live wires together and throwing the switch. The surge of electricity would be awesome, and akin to what happened at our Leadership Institute in Ann Arbor in August. You can't help coming away from this kind of gathering of young leaders and dedicated alumni with your enthusiasm recharged and your confidence in the future of our nations uplifted. These are great young people; they listen, they contribute, they rise to help others with problems, and they heartily join in celebrating the successes of their brothers from other chapters. It's a great joy to be among 'em! We do indeed add value to the . college experience - if we keep focused on excellence, enrichment, achievement and moderation. Three of our DU programs are particularly aimed at building and maintaining the positive lifestyle that overturns the destructive Animal House image unfortunately so popular in the media.
The President's Report They continue to hang us with a rope fashioned by a small minority of fraternity members, and we let them do it. The programs, or tools, are The Cornerstone, the Seven Stars, and the Alumni Chapter concept. The Cornerstone, our brand new manual ("revised" is not an adequate word), it is an extraordinary book. You will find nothing even coming close among the membership manuals of the other fraternal organizations. It's candid, it's current, it's a survival guide, it's an excellent guide, and it's a book that will be re-rea<:i both during and after the undergraduate years. The committee has done us an invaluable service with their writing experience. My one concern is that most of the alumni may never see these thoughtful pages. I encourage you to order a copy, borrow one, give one to an outstanding high , school senior - what a subtle way torush the cream of the crop.

The Seven Stars program, which takes its name from the stars on our Coat of Arms, outlines the stepby-step procedures to achieve superior results in basic chapter activities. It is a leadership program that is being widely incorporated by other fraternities. It's built on practical experience. The more a chapter uses it, the more brothers they involve in carrying out the activities, and the greater that chapter becomes. The third tool is our new Alumni Chapter Program. We are distilling what we have learned from the top alumni groups, clubs and corporation boards across the continent, and supporting the growth of an alumni chapter along side of each undergraduate chapter. The benefits are continuity, financial stability, and leadership counseling for the undergraduate officers. We probably could diffuse a little liberal culture, too! The bottom line is simple: we have better, stronger and more stable chapters where there is a well-organized and responsible alumni support group. Sheldon attended Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, where he joined Delta Upsilon and polished his Greek and Latin translations with Charles Evans Hughes, Brown 1881, later Secretary of State, Governor of New York and Chief Justice of the United States. Following in His Steps chronicles Sheldon's life of seeking unique solutions to social problems. He spoke out against anti-Black activity, supported feminist struggles for equal rights and campaigned for world peace. largest average gift, $50.04. On the chapter Top 20 list, we have a new leading chapter, after 13 years of more men from Purdue contributing than from any other chapter. Syracuse is the new leader with 123 gifts, with Purdue and Iowa State close on its heels. Seven chapters had more than 100 alumni donate. The chart below shows the Top 20 chapters, followed by last year's rank, number of givers and increase from last year's total per chapter. The tremendous increase in number of overall contributors shows in the final column, as every chapter on this list had more men give than the year before. Built Canada's largest independent accounting firm
Winspear continues 'fun of finance'

"Finance is fun!" This phrase recurs through Out Of My Mind (Morriss, Victoria, B.C., 2nd ed., 1988), the autobiography of Francis G. Winspear, Alberta '38, as he recounts the pleasures of building one of Canada's most successful accounting firms. It also captures the spirit of what Brother Wins pear has been able to accomplish as the result of his genius in financial management. Through the Wins pear Foundation, he has supported the arts, higher education and social needs in Western Canada. And his interests in the welfare of Western Canada led to his support of the formation of the Reform Party, which has had some early electoral success. Formed firm during Depression
That accounting can be fun is illustrated well in Brother Winspear's recollections of the formation of his firm in February 1930. Though not the most auspicious date in terms of world economic health, the times held opportunity for a man unafraid to build a practice. He struck out on his own after revitalizing the practice of a more established firm's Edmonton office. DELTA UPSILON QUARTERLY路
He built his reputation through new concepts in cost accounting, machine bookkeeping and cooperative contacts with banks and lawyers. An appointment to teach advanced accounting at the University of Alberta led to a steady stream of young accountants who learned from Wins pear and often joined his firm . As the firm grew, Brother Winspear was able to extend its practice across Canada, and later into several other na"tions. Much of its success grew from the firm's ability to take over a struggling manufacturing operation, improve management, attract needed capital and financing, and then sell at the peak of the industry's business cycle. His success brought the demands of society, which called upon him to serve his nation in wartime
as an agent of the Custodian of Enemy Property. His business reputation also brought an opportunity to serve the national Chamber of Commerce, and he was President of that organization in 1950. He also served on the Private Planning Association of Canada and the Economic Council of Canada. 'Things to be done' In writing that "no man should be satisfied with only one career," it is clear Brother Wins pear has followed his own advice. "For a while after I retired from the firm I had created I was over-sentimental and discouraged .... But I must not get nostalgic. Never look back. There are things to be done," h~ wrote. 5 men join DU traveling staff Delta Upsilon's professional staff has several new members, ready to aid undergraduate and alumni chapters this fall. As reported in the April issue, Jordan B. Lotsoff, Northern Illinois '88, became Director of Chapter Services on June 1. He succeeds Andrew M. Dunham, San Jose '86, who is beginning graduate studies at the University of Northern Colorado. Two men from large, successful Midwestern chapters will be directing DU's programs for Alumni Chapters and for growth. Bryan Poynter, DePauw '89, will be Alumni Chapter Director, responsible for programs and services for the teams of alumni which advise and sustain chapters of Delta Upsilon . Jeff Dempsey, Nebraska '89, will be Expansion Director, having charge of reviving dormant and establishing new DU chapters, and helping existing chapters to improve rush and retention efforts, thus increasing average chapter size. Three Leadership Consultants will travel fulltime to visit DU chapters and colonies for the coming academic year. M. Dave Johnson, Colorado '89, was secretary, vice president and president of his chapter. During that time, the chapter's membership grew stead-

ily and Colorado made strong efforts in reducing hazing and alcohol-centered problems. Dave authored an excellent Secretary's Guide, shared with many DU chapters. He was' also first vice president of IFC and a Student Union Election Commissioner. Derek N . Dunham, North Dakota '89, was also president of his chapter. During his ten\1re, DU at North Dakota recaptured first place in chapter PGA, which it had lost for the first time in more than a decade, and improved chapter rush and administration. Among his many campus activities was service
as chairman of the Board of Student Publications, and he won several advertising and marketing competitions. Richard F. Bess, SanJose '89, became President of his chapter during a time when improved administration was needed - and he got the job done. He had previously been an active member of chapter committees and got the chapter back on track with better planning and goal setting. Rich represents a growing number of men who started their studies at a junior college and then earned their bachelor's degree at a state university.
