MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT DELTA UPSILON INTERNATIONAL FRATERNITY

Dear Brothers: The two words most often heard in connection with DU membership are "justice" and "merit."

North America's Oldest Non-Secret Fraternity; Founded 1834

Justice: 1) rightfulness, 2) adhering to what is fail; honest and moral.

'1

The Principles of Delta Upsilon The Promotion of Friendship The Development of Character The Diffusion of Liberal Culture The Advancement of Justice

Merit: 1) the intrinsic right and wrong of a matteI; 2) legitimate claim to respect. Every person has a responsibility to promote what is fair, honest, and moral and as they do so they are entitled to a legitimate claim to respect. Justice and merit are part of the same package.

The Motto of Delta Upsilon International Fraternity

Ed Porter, Oklahoma '65

As DUs we each have the added challenge of advancing justice. The Advancement of Justice is one of our founding principles. Justice, Our Foundation. Justice is what we do . The principle of justice is not only the foundation of Delta Upsilon, but the foundation of our free society. As DUs we should always be looking for opportunities to advance justice on our campus and in our community. The volunteer leadership of DU is dedicated to this principle. The staff leadership is also dedicated and focused on this principle. Recently there have been some changes in the staff at our offices in Indianapolis. (See the announcement on page 6.) With change comes opportunity. DU is fortunate to have men of merit to step forward and continue to advance justice and advance Delta Upsilon. Dr. Allan Warrack, Alberta '61, will serve as Interim Executive Director. Brother Warrack is a man of vast and valuable experience as you will read on page 6. Many years ago Brother Warrack served as a Leadership Consultant (at that time termed a Field Secretary) and he has recently served on the Board of the Fraternity. He is intimately familiar with DU's principles and goals.

recently heard a story from Native American folklore about a Brave who found an eagle's egg. Since he couldn't find the nest to return the egg, he did the next best thing. He put the eagle's egg in a nest with prairie chickens. When the eagle's egg hatched, all the new little eagle saw was chickens, so he clucked, scratched and pecked around. He thought he was a chicken for years . Then one day, he saw a glorious sight in the sky, a great bald eagle soaring high above the trees, gliding on the breeze. The eagle asked, "What is that?" The other chickens answered, "That is the eagle, the king of birds . Forget any ideas you have of doing that; that's not for you, you're a chicken ." And so, the eagle lived the rest of his life clucking, pecking, and scratching around. He never realized his destiny of flying high above the trees, gliding on the breeze. As a college president, I must concern myself with creating eagles, sometimes even transfiguring them from chickens. In effect this metaphor speal<s of a renewal by returning to the history and traditions of the founding principles of most fraternities. This "retro-fitting" of fraternities with their founding values holds the promise of rescuing those entities from the brink of extinction. Indeed, colleges and universities are beginning to see the rebirth of an entity that develops young men, contributes to their education, and forms an ally in the progress of the institution. The Delta Upsilon International Fraternity has been proactive in this transformation . The directives, policies and new programming emanating from this leadership serves to refocus the mission of the chapters from a primarily social orientation to new chapters where the terms, "gentlemen," "scholarship," "responsibility," "justice," and "brotherhood" are firm anchors inherent within the chapters' missions. When this new focus is successfully assimilated within the fraternal organization, additional opportunities emerge for the host institution. In fact there appears to be three primary areas for positive exploitation of the Greek system when that system is functioning in a healthy manner. The first opportunity is to assess and promote student retention. Astin, Tinto (1997) and other leading student retention researchers recently report that students involved with fraternities and other activities have a significantly higher retention rate than those students who remain independent. The factors in operation that enable this increase are feelings of support and affiliation that students describe as a result of their

I

4

fraternal involvement. Students replace loneliness and isolation with peer support and guidance, scholastic competition and leadership development. The second opportunity is related to character education. Berkowitz and Fekula (1999) indicate that educators at colleges and universities are recognizing the importance of educating for character. Even though the importance of this education is recognized, currently it is offered sporadically and piecemeal. This weakness is likely the result of faculty members who are hesitant to influence student character accompanied with negative student attitudes toward such attempts. In general, those in higher education often balk at what they likely view as tampering with students' morality. . That character education is unavoidable must be accepted by institutions of higher education. Education itself inevitably affects character, either intentionally or unintentionally. To abstain from recognizing the importance of this facet of education is to abdicate control to chance or other influences (Berkowitz and Fekula) . In addition to the potential for enhancing personal success, the education of character can also ameliorate the significant moral problems prevalent on college and university campuses-alcohol abuse, date rape, academic dishonesty, vandalism and assault to name a few. With such compelling reasons for offering character education, but with faculty and student reluctance to become involved with such programming, it might be reasonable to consider engaging fraternities as partners in providing this facet of the college education experience. Clearly peer influence transcends any other in its power to facilitate behavioral changes within the peer ranks . With few exceptions, student affairs resources exist at most institutions ro provide training and assessment programs to select teams of Greek students who would serve as peer educators for the Greek chapters that exist on their campuses. While there are many forms of character education, commonalties exist to suggest at least five elements for inclusion with a presentation system. Within the institutional - Greek peer relationship, one might consider: a. Presentations about morality, ethics and values. This information could be offered jointly by faculty and peer educators in new student experience courses and new member education classes to address ethics and espoused values across the curriculum.

b. Role-modeling. Displaying character through appropriate behavio rs and institutional/Greek policies.

5. Endurance - staying with a student who is struggling, taking the long view for the greater good.

c. Demanding character. Adhering to ambitious academic and behavior standards and consistent and fair enforcement policies.

6. Enthusiasm - the need to infuse energy when you exude energy. 7. Initiative - thinking critically and creatively.

d. Opportunities to practice character. To be included is democratic governance, community service and experiential learning.

8. Integrity - the test of respect. 9. Judgment - basing leaders' decisions on all available facts.

e. Reflecting on behavior. Faculty and student lead discussions on behavioral topics, mentorships, and service learning. Throughout my years of affiliation with Delta Upsilon Fraternity I have heard the term, "building better men." It is now time to find out the meaning of that term and, indeed, to start the building process through the enhancement of character. Look at the United States Air Force Academy. That institution made "character" the centerpiece of their identity and mission. The third area for positive exploitation of the Greek system is that of leadership development. While admittedly this area already exists, it appears that the strength of leadership development within fraternities is not consistent. Further, the definition of leadership most widely accepted is probably too narrow to be totally effective. Charles Schroeder (1997) suggests looking to the Marines for a definition of leadership. Schroeder finds several commonalties to this military branch and higher education. And within the ranks of the Marines is General Charles C. Krulak who offers "Fourteen Basic Traits of Effective Leadership." (These traits and definitions are in the public domain and require no permission to reproduce). General Krulak states, "Leaders in education and leaders of Marines have more than a few things in common. We share the rewarding experience of shaping the lives of many yo ung people. We face the challenges of communicating with them about new ideas and exploring the meaning of ideals. We serve as role models. Some of us lead the institutions that enable our programs to succeed. Some of us lead 'in the trenches,' working with the students and individual Marines. Whether preparing yo ung men and women for the defense of our nation or contributing to their moral, intellectual and professional development, our ability to make a lasting impact on the future leaders of our nation is in many cases directly proportional to the quality of our leadership. " The General outlines his 14 traits to expand the scope of leadership by including: 1. Bearing - determining how you are seen by those you would influence. 2. Courage - moral courage is a fundamental requirement of all effective leaders. 3. Decisiveness - not to be confused with inflexibility, decisiveness drives consistency. 4 . Dependability - leaders must be dependable all of the time.

10. Sense of justice - do not appear arbitrary, partial or unfair. 11. Knowledge - commitment to build an effective knowledge base. 12. Loyalty - cannot be built but must be freely offered by those who are led. 13. Tact - the ability to communicate effectively using excellent "people skills." 14. Unselfish - properly preparing oneself and being available. C learly leadership, character, and affiliation are strong examples of opportunities for fraternities to make a difference, but so is changing a chicken into an eagle. Opportunity is for the taking. We can be examples on which our students will pattern their lives. We have the chance to teach AND to influence character. We have the chance . .. to lead!

Bradlev~hapter The Bradley DU Chapter has a history of 18 years of raising money for St. Jude Children's Hospital. The goal this year was to raise $20,000 and when that benchmark was not quite achieved, the men of the Bradley Chapter dug deep into their own pockets and made up the balance. The events took place April 19-22 with the kick-off being the April 10th dinner attended by faculty, student organization leaders, Greek officers, members of the St. Jude board of directors, and a former St. Jude patient who spoke about his experience at St. Jude . The fundraising efforts began the next day with the trampolines in the quad. On the 12th the trampolines were moved to Sam's Club and Wal-Mart. Local TV network affiliates covered the three days of the Jump for St. Jude.

During the homeless rally, several people from the community dropped off donations and every DU brother had a goal of raising at least $25 for the cause. During the overnight stay the brothers bonded as they played wiffle ball, hacky sack, and other games they could improvise. While the men were required to stay four hours, many stayed longer, with 22 out of the 68 staying the entire 24 hours. While the weather was cold and rainy, and the men slept in cardboard boxes , the DUs raised a lot of money, items, and just awareness for the Genesis House of Southeastern Kenosha.

The Orlando Outback Steakhouse hosts a 5K run every year in Orlando to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida. This year the DUs assisted with registration and the finish line . The Boys & Girls Club received $10,000 for having enough volunteers to staff the competition. In mid-March the Central Florida brothers participated in the "absolutely incredible kids day" created by Camp Fire USA and held at the Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida. The AIKD program , sponsored by Michael Eisner, Denison '64, asked that each child receive a letter from an adult telling him/her why he/she was absolutely incredible. The brothers gave the letters to the children and stayed to visit with them and talk about what makes each person absolutely incredible.

The brothers won five trophies out of a possible six, and took home first place over all. Shown to the right is the bed race, an event enjoyed by the participants as well as the onlookers.

Michigan Tech Chapter Early in November, 30 brothers of the Michigan Tech Chapter volunteered their time to rake leaves with proceeds going to benefit Little Brothers/Friends of the Elderly. Moving into the spring months, chapter members adopted a portion of US highway #2, and then volunteered for clean-up duty for downtown Houghton. The brothers cleaned up dirt and trash that had accumulated during the long winter.

Rochester ellapter The Rochester Chapter was involved with several community service events during the last semester. On March 2nd, the brothers spent time at the local Boys & Girls Club and were given a tour of the facilities. They met with the director and assistant director of the club to discuss Boys & Girls Club week and future DU activities with the club. At the end of March, the chapter held its annual philanthropic fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity. Dubbed "homeless for the homeless," brothers took shifts in the Rochester cold collecting donations from students nd members of the community. The fundraiser and awareness program lasted 48 hours and raised more than $1,600.

For the ninth year the Greek community at CWRU challenged itself to complete 365 days worth of service to the community. This year they exceeded the goal by accumulating 446 days of service. The Western Reserve DU chapter's goal was six days of service and they achieved 100% of the goal.

During the spring 2002 semester the Western Illinois Chapter accomplished many things. On April 8 the chapter was honored with several awards during the university's annual Greek Week. Later in the month, the chapter sponsored its first annual Kiss-A-Car philanthropy in cooperation with a local sorority. Borrowing the idea from DU brothers at the Indiana Chapter, the men held a contest in which the winner took home a fully loaded Jeep Wrangler Sahara. The winner kissed the Jeep for almost 24 hours to claim his prize. Proceeds went to the Boys & Girls Club of the Springfield, Illinois area, the WIU Speech & Hearing Clinic, and Gallaudet University in Washington , D.C., for the hearing impaired.

The DU Washington State Chapter is proud to report a very successful first year back on campus. They added eight quality members to the membership roster, and since spring initiation have added four more pledges. A successful fall formal recruitment is anticipated. In addition to the growth in numbers, the brothers have reestablished the chapter's reputation on campus and maintained a busy social schedule throughout the year. This included the first annual camping trip, ski trip, and spring break. Exchanges with many of the sororities on campus, a successful homecoming with Alpha Phi and Delta Chi, and a great Greek Week with Kappa Alpha Theta and Sigma Phi Epsilon increased DU's recognition in both the Greek community and on the campus at large. Plans for the school year will extend the chapter's success. The number of members living in the chapter house will nearly double. A camping trip with Delta Delta Delta is planned immediately following recruitment week. Upon return from that trip, the DU brothers will meet partners Alpha Chi Omega and Beta Theta Pi for work toward Homecoming 2002. DU at WSU looks forward to a successful year, and many great years into the future.

elta Upsilon is a fraternity of leaders - today's leaders and those of the future. At the Fraternity's annual meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio, in late-July, it was the pleasure of the brotherhood to recognize these men who are deemed by their peers to be role models and leaders. The Delta Upsilon Distinguished Alumni Award, one of the highest honors that the International Fraternity can bestow on alumni was given to Dennis R. Rehberg, W0shington State '77 The award seeks to recognize the significant accomplishments of leading alumni and is presented to brothers who bring honor to themselves, and to DU, through achievements that are recognized nationally or internationally, or who demonstrate a lifetime of extraordinary service or support for Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Most importantly, it is presented to alumni who embody the Four Founding Principles in evelY sense. Montana's member of the House of Representatives since 2000, Brother Rehberg currently serves on numerous committees including the House Committee on Agriculture, Resources, and Transportation & Infrastructure. He was also named Vice Chair of the Transportation Committee's Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment. A fifth generation Montana rancher with more than a quarter century of ranching and public service experience, Brother Rehberg began his life-long dedication to public service in 1977. In 1984 Denny was elected to the Montana State House of Representatives, where he served three successful terms. In 1991, Brother Rehberg was appointed Lieutenant Governor. Denny joins a list of 38 other recipients of the DU Distinguished Alumni Award including Lou Holtz, Linus Pauling, Austin Kiplinger, and Herbert Brownell, to name just a few. Dallas was an immediate figure in the alumni corporation after his graduation . He served as corporation treasurer for three years and then was elected president of the corporation, a position that he held for eight years. He became the project director for the financing and construction of a new house. Dallas stayed involved in the corporation, and in the late-80s was again project director for the chapter house renovations. He continues to serve the chapter as an alumni advisor. Created in 2001, the Founders Medal is presented to Delta Upsilon alumni who display extraordinary service to the Fraternity and embody the Four Founding Principles. Five Delta Upsilon brothers have received this honor, the most recent being Frank S. Dodd, Miami '49. Brother Dodd has served for over 50 years on the Miami Chapter's alumni leadership team, and sometimes he was the leadership team! His civil contributions to the Oxford, Ohio, and Miami University communities have been formidable. Frank has been the president of the Red & White Club, an athletic booster club for Miami University, as well as a member of the Oxford Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Rotary Club, and named Oxford's Citizen of the Year. Frank's business and community involvement are absolutely representative of his service, dedication, and legacy to the Miami Chapter.

During his undergraduate years as social chairman he devised two Miami Chapter traditions that ultimately became Miami University traditions also. The Indian Date Party, is still held today, and has been held each year since its inception. The Delta Upsilon Puddle Pull, the last and usually deciding event of Greek Week, is another tradition begun by Frank Dodd. For over 50 years, teams of 10 have lined up to engage in a tug of war. Brother Dodd's devotion to the chapter did not stop after graduation, and he immediately became an advisor to the chapter, and then ultimately, formed the 400 East Vine Alumni Organization, the Miami Chapter's property management corporation . Frank continues to sit on this board, teaching its members lessons of the struggles and challenges he faced . He led a successful reorganization of the Mianli Chapter in 1988, and still attends alumni and chapter meetings. The President's Award is designed to recognize the undergraduate member who has best given his time and effort to the betterment of his chapter, campus, and community over the just completed academic year. The candidate should exhibit a high level of academic performance, and above all else, a dedication to the principles of Delta Upsilon. Finalists for this year's award were Brian E. Bartelli, Bradley '03, Joshua A. Ceaser, Pan American '04, and Coady H. Pruett,

Cal Poly '02. The award for the 2001-02 year went to Brother Pruett. Coady's service to his chapter includes being the VP-external affairs, VP-internal affairs, judicial board member, alumni relations chairman, parents' weekend chairman, 45th anniversary committee, and associate member educator. He served two terms as a DU undergraduate director and three terms as the province 12 Undergraduate Advisory Board representative. DELTA U ON THE WEB @ www.DeltaU.org

ALUMNI NEWS

Dave Alani, Indiana '85, joined DU in 1981 "at a time when the chapter offered a lot of opportunities for individuals. I was one of a 29-member pledge class, the largest of the chapter in some time. Plus, there was a lot of tradition, which I liked. My time as an undergraduate was a great experience." Dave, self-admittedly, was one of those guys that "just got along with everybody, but with going to class and working, I did not really have the time or desire to hold an office. Frankly, the chapter was so well run, I did not feel the need to be involved beyond that of being a supportive member. That is partly why I feel so strongly about being more involved now as part of the alumni board. We have challenges, as everyone does, but we have our visions which we strive to achieve. Overall, it is still fun, but there is always room for more volunteers." Dave is the alumni president for the Indiana Chapter and he

stays in touch with the leaders of the undergraduate chapter, while being an integral part of the "alumni machine" that advises the chapter and manages the property. What keeps him involved? "I always want to try to raise the bar every year so that the experience level of the guys in the house is going to be one that they can enjoy. It gives me great pleasure to see our undergraduate brothers spend their time here in the chapter, graduate and move on to do well in their careers or graduate school. That kind of satisfaction, in itself, is extremely rewarding . If we do our best to provide them with a great experience, then they will want to be more involved after they graduate; after all they will be the future alumni volunteers." As to what advice he would give today's undergraduates, the answer was simple. "Be involved. Alumni need to recognize that they are a part of this

D. Alalli

organization, and should do their best to be involved in some capacity, whether that is attending an alumni event, donating financially, simply keeping in touch with their pledge brothers, or responding to a newsletter. One of my chapter brothers is my daughter's godfather, and three brothers stood up for me in my wedding. I will never trade those intangible things that the Fraternity gave me. Those that stay involved or in touch will be the ones that realize the intangible benefits and rewards of being a member of DU." Brother Alani is indeed a great ambassador of the Fraternity's ideals and principles, and an integral part of Delta Upsilon's mission to build better men.

The Dallas-Fort Worth DU Alumni Association held its annual golf tournament on June 2nd, a make-up date from a previous rainout. Participation was great with 40 brothers enjoying the outing. Proceeds from the tournament went toward a scholarship for the undergraduate chapter. Making up the winning foursome were Arlington alumni Sam Dick '70, Tom Donaldson '72, Larry Robertson '72, and David York '73, with a score of 12 under par. For information on next year's event, contact Scott Layman at 817.483.0521, laymantex@aol.com, or visit www.deltaualumni.com. Central Florida's newest member, Joseph T. Ramsey, was initiated in Korea in mid-January. He was initiated by G. Breton Wedding '99 and Stephen N. Sams '95. Brother Ramsey is a Captain in the Army Transportation Corps and was Brother Wedding 's commanding officer. Brother Wedding said that listening again to the words of the Fraternity's Ritual reminded him and reinforced all the wonderful things he had received from being a part of Delta Upsilon . James E. Youker, Colgate '50, Professor and Chairman of Radiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, received the Radiologic Society of North America's (RSNA) Gold Medal award for having "rendered unusual services to the science of radiology. " The college's dean and executive vice president stated, "Dr. Youker 's commitment to the educational, clinical and research aspects of radiology merits the accolades that accompany the award ." Brother Youker is in his 34th year as chairman of the department of radiology at the college. On March 2, 2002, members of the Delaware Chapter held their first reunion since the chapter closed in 1983. Over half of the chapter members attended the event at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware. Some brothers traveled from as 12

far as Hawaii, California, and Florida for the occasion. Matt "Krop" Kropiewnicki '79 put together a display of chapter composites and memorabilia for the evening. Mark Reed' 73, along with other brothers, spent over seven months tracking down contact information for the members. Brother Reed remarked that, "The excitement and joy of being together again was more than worth the effort!" Keep your name on themailinglistbycontactingBrotherReedatmreed45@juno.com. Peter Krass, Lafayette '87, dedicated the last three years to writing Carnegie, a biography of one of the major figures in American history - the industrialist and renowned philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The book is due to be released by John Wiley & Son Publishers in September. Brother Krass is the script consultant for a BBC television program on Andrew Carnegie. He is also working on his next book, Blood & Whiskey: the Life and Times of Jack Daniel, an American Legend. Yong Cha Jones has established a scholarship at the University of Maine Foundation in honor of her son, Laurence A. Jones, Jr., Maine '93, who was tragically murdered November 20, 1993. Eligible to apply for the scholarship are graduates of Maine high schools who are second or third year students at the University of Maine, with preference going to those maintaining a 3.0 GPA or better, and those students majoring in psychology. Evil Clown Animation, a.k.a. Michael I. Dobson, McMaster '96, is a cutting-edge multimedia studio working on an attention-getting seven-minute animated short film titled Carnage. Brother Dobson is an animation director who completed his BA in history at McMaster University before going on to animation school at Sheridan College and later Capilano College in North Vancouver. Carnage shows Siobhan's (the heroine) quest to rescue her lover (One With Gods) from the demon of supreme evil (Slag). Having worked on some television shows previously, Mike succumbed to the urge to write, direct, and produce Carnage. Visit www.evilclownanimation.com and see for yourself what goes on in the creative mind of Brother Dobson. Barrett J. "BJ" McGinn, Northern Io wa '99, begins his second season as a graduate assistant coach for the Wildcats basketball team at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska. Brother McGinn previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Cedar Falls High School, and was a student assistant coach at Wartburg College in 1996-97. McGinn tells the Quarterly, "I have really enjoyed my experience at Wayne State. We have a very well respected program, and a tremendous coaching staff. We have a game scheduled with the Panthers at Northern Iowa on December 16, and I'm very excited about the opportunity to go back to my alma mater and get to coach in a game there. I'm also looking forward to seeing some of the members of the chapter. I definitely owe a lot to DU and the members of the Northern Iowa Chapter who helped me along the way and encouraged me. Leadership, teamwork, commitment, and brotherhood are life lessons that I use everyday in coaching, and I learned them all during my time at the DU Chapter at Northern Iowa." We will be closely watching the Dallas Cowboys ' offense this season with the debut of Bruce N. Coslet, Pacific '68, as the Cowboys ' offensive coordinator, and Galen Hall, Pennsylvania State '62, as the offensive line coach for the running backs. Brother Coslet brings to the Cowboys 30 years of experience as an NFL player, assistant coach, offensive coordinator, and head coach. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, "We wanted someone with play-calling experience at a high level, a track record at the highest level, and somebody with a creative mind who can mold a scheme around his personnel. I think we've been able to do that with a man who meets all of these G. Hall requirements, the best man for the job, and the man who will take our offense where it needs to be." Brother Hall has enjoyed head coaching success in guiding the Rhein Fire (1995- A. Gilbert (r) and his 2000) of NFL Europe to a 36-27 record and league titles in 1998 and 2000. Hall's Bolivian friend, Juan. most recent professional football head coaching assignment was with the XFL's Orlando Rage (2001). His assignment with the Cowboys reunites him with Emmitt Smith, recruited to the Florida Gators in 1987 by Hall and coached by Brother Hall throughout his collegiate career. Armed with his BS in Agricultural Economics and DU 's Four Founding Principles, Anthony J. Gilbert, Pennsylvania State '95, embarked on his three-year Peace Corps

The book is a salute to all who have flown on the shuttle since its maiden flight in 1981 and contains some reflections by Frederick H. Hauck, Tufts '62, currently the president and CEO of AX A Space of Bethesda, MD. During Brother Hauck's 11 years as a NASA astronaut, he flew on three space shuttle missions , the F. Hauck last as commander of Discovel), for the first space shuttle mission after the Challenger tragedy. In discussing the book, Hauck commented, "I enjoyed immensely reading the reflections of my colleagues and viewing some superb photography that I had not seen before. Space Shuttle: Th e First 20 Years provides the reader with a view into the personal aspects of our adventures in space. The flight-by-flight summaries in the appendix provide a wealth of data documenting the amazing accomplishments of the space shuttle and the team that designed, built, operated, and flew it." For over 50 years, the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation has existed to help change the lives of the undergraduate members. Through the generous annual gifts of our brothers, the Foundation has been able to provide educational grants to the Fraternity, DU chapters, and individual members in a variety of ways including the following.

• The Leadership Institute brings together brothers from all chapters each summer for a fourday experience that includes educational seminars for chapter officers, interactive sessions focusing on the Fraternity's Four Founding Principles, a community service event, and a model initiation. • The Winter Educational Conference typically includes the Presidents Academy, the Recruitment Symposium, and the Charles Evans Hughes DUEL (Delta Upsilon Emerging Leaders) Program. • Membership Education. The Founding Fathers of DU envisioned an association that is committed to the education and personal growth of its brothers. The Four Word program (currently in pilot stage) is an example of one of DU's educational programs. Four Word is DU's personal growth and development curriculum, tailored to each individual member. • The McQuaid Scholarship/Fellowship awards undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships of $2,500 each to deserving DU members. • Chapter Educational Accounts provide for restricted funds within the endowment of the Foundation. Donors have the ability to make taxdeductible gifts benefiting the educational needs of a specific chapter. • The Leadership Consultant Program provides oncampus resources for chapters and brothers to improve their chapter's operation and effectiveness.

The Foundation provides an annual grant to help defray the cost of educational workshops, seminars, and retreats administered by the leadership consultants.

• The Alumni Volunteer Conference, conducted during the Leadership Institute, provides instruction and problem-solving seminars for those who serve as alumni volunteers to our chapters. • The Delta Upsilon/Boys & Girls Club service partnership was created as a forum for local DU chapters to actively engage in grass roots volunteerism. The involvement with Boys & Girls Clubs affords DU brothers the opportunity to develop character and lasting friendships. Additional support includes: • Support of the Regional Leadership Seminars (RLS). • The Quarterly, the Cornerstone, and other educational publications. • IHQ summer internship program. • Grants for UIFI to individual members.

Brothers can give at two levels: the Blue Level recognizes gifts from $18.34 to $29.99, and the Level recognizes gifts of $30+. Donors receive a recognition certificate and mention in the DU Quarterly. I , Level donors receive, in addition, a collector's lapel pin which design changes each year. In addition to individual recognition, chapters are also recognized for their cumulative giving total in a fiscal year. Chapters are identified as Bronze, Silver, or d Chapters, with cumulative totals of $250, $500, and $1,000 respectively. The 2002-03 Oak Circle year is already underway! Undergraduates who would like to contribute, alumni who would like to sponsor undergraduates, or gifts from a chapter or alumni in the name of the chapter may be given by using the enclosed envelope in this Quarterly, by visiting the Fraternity's website at www.DeltaU.org, or contacting the International Headquarters. I

he DUEF is pleased to announce the results the Oak Circle's first year! The. ~ak Circle is t~~ Fraternity's first undergraduate glvmg club speCIfically recognizing gifts from undergraduates to the annual campaign. Brothers responded favorably to the program by exceeding the expected goal for the year and raising more than $3,000. The money raised through undergraduate giving will be used in establishing an endowment for $500 scholarships to be awarded each year at the Leadership Institute. As the endowment grows, the number of scholarships that will be awarded will increase. The DUEF has announced its support of the program by subsidizing the scholarships for the next two years until the first full endowment is reached. The first scholarship will be awarded at the 2003 Leadership Institute in Norfolk, Virginia, with applications being accepted after January 1, 2003.

The chart above details the growth in total assets of the DU Educational Foundation over the past six years. Among the most Significant reasons for the Foundation's growth has been the expert oversight and management of the endowment portfolio by Brother Maurice S. Mandel, Chicago '55. On an annual basis the Foundation's financial statements are audited by Ness & Company, LLP of Indianapolis, Indiana. Copies of the 2001-2002 audited financial statements are available upon request from Delta Upsilon Headquarters. *unaudited
