MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT DELTA UPSILON INTERNATIONAL FRATERNITY

"Take It All In" Dear Brothers:

North America's Oldest Non-Secret Fratemity; Founded 1834

Would you consider a trip to Di sneyworld complete if you rode Space Mountain once and then left for home without taking advantage of all of the other attractions?

The Principles of Delta Upsilon The Promotion of Friendship The Development of Character The Diffusion of Liberal Culture The Advancement of Justice

Would you consider a trip to Hawaii complete if you spent the entire time in the Honolulu airport? Would you consider your university education complete if you spent all your time in class and the library without experiencing all of the other opportunities on campus? Of course not! That's why you joined DU!

The Motto of Delta Upsilon Intemational Fratemity

Ed Porte/~ Oklahoma '65

As members of Delta Upsilon International Fraternity we have an enormous number of avenues to enjoy our membership to the fullest. As undergraduates we work with our brothers on a homecoming float, or Mom 's Day performance, play sports, attend social functions and much more. As alumni we attend DU luncheons, Chapter events and keep our brothers close. All fun, all BUILD BETTER MEN.

However, there is more! Much more. We only enjoy a small part of the DU experience if we limit our activities to our Chapter! In order to enjoy the full benefit of our membership we can attend Regional Leadership Seminars, the annual Leadership Institute, or the Winter Educational Conference where we connect with thousands of other DUs. At these "value added" events we meet national and international leaders in business, law, banking, politics, entertainment and more. All DU brothers. All having fun, sharing experiences, and BUILDING BETTER MEN. Don 't mi ss one of the best parts of your DU experience by foc using only on your own Chapter. Participate as an alumni or undergraduate in all of the extended opportunities ofDU.

The biggest and best single event in DU is the Leadership Institute. This is the premier summer conference among all fraternities. Mark your calendar now for .July 25 - August 31, 2005. Ovel' 500 undergraduates and alumni will meet at the Hyatt Tech Center in Denver to have fun, exchange ideas, learn and experience DU to the fullest. Don 't let your DU experience be "one ride and go home." Take it all in! You ' ll have more fun , be richer, improve your career, make more influential fri ends, and BE A BEITER MAN by taking advantage of all that DU has to offer.

Brother Dawes, a native of Illinois, was a lawyer, author, banker, industrialist, statesman, soldier, and diplomat, etc. He served during World War I, becoming a Brigadier General in October 1918. He was the first supervisor of the US Bureau of the Budget, working without pay or title from an attic room at the Treasury Department. By the end of the year he had established an efficient budget system that reportedly saved the taxpayers $300 million (remember this was 1921) - he drew his entire year's salary of $1 and returned home. The Nobel Peace Prize was given him for his work on the Dawes Plan enabling German reparation payments to the Allied nations following World War I. 8

The weather was beautiful, the setting spectacular, the programming innovative, the brotherhood indescribable! Everyone who attended the late-July annual conference in Portland, Oregon, declared it one of Delta Upsilon's best conferences. The new format of the undergraduates and alumni meeting together for sessions mutually beneficial in building better men may well be developed into one of DU's most progressive educational models. Among the faculty were Brothers Mawi Asgedom, Harvard '99, Rod Barleen, Kansas '97, Jeff Bernstein, Rochester '04, Terry Bullock, Kansas State '61, Adam Culley, Northern Iowa '00, Rich Delano, Indiana '85, Tom Durein, Oregon State '92, Joshua Katz, Central Florida '97, Will Keim, Pacific '75, Jordan Lotsoff, Northern Illinois '88, Ed Porter, Oklahoma '65, Justin Porter, Harvard '99, Daryl Reisfeld, Rochester '03, Ron Sutor, Oklahoma '04, and Curtis Zimmerman, Miami '04. The Province Governors - Delta Force Brothers - met and discussed how to reinvigorate alumni involvement for the betterment of the Fraternity. The Alumni Volunteer Conference had its best attendance yet and rated among the highest evaluations. Both the Fraternity Board of Directors and the Educational Foundation Board ofTrustees held their separate meetings and then met jointly as is the custom during the annual conference. The Undergraduate Convention and then the Assembly ofTrustees held their deliberations on legislation and the election of the Board of Directors for the upcoming year. All of this plus good food and Delta Upsilon style brotherhood combined to make the 2004 annual educational conference one to remember. The appreciation of all who attended (and those who could not attend) goes to the Educational Foundation for the grant which in great portion supports this program, and in turn the many donors who demonstrate their interest and loyalty by their gifts of money, time, and personal resources. Make plans now to attend the 2005 Leadership Institute in Denver, July 28 31 . DELTA U ON THE WEB @ www.DeltaU.org

CHAIRMAN'S AWARD:

One of the highlights of every Leadership Institute is the presentation of the Chairman's Award (Alumnus Volunteer of the Year) and the President's Award (Undergraduate of the Year). Excerpted here are the introductions and accolades given to the 2003-04 recipients.

• •• •••••••••••• ••••••••••••••••••

John Layman, Michigan '55. DU is certain that one of the largest contributing factors to a chapter's success is the dedication and influence of a talented alumni advisor and volunteer. The recipient of this year's Chairman's Award goes to a brother whose loyalty to DU knows no limits. No doubt he is still using the same leadership skills that he developed while serving as Chapter President in 1954, before graduating from the University of Michigan in 1955. Since then, he has remained an interested and involved alumnus. He has been involved with the chapter for the past several years, most recently serving as the chairman of their alumni chapter fundraising efforts, wherein the past year he raised over $50,000 for chapter house Chairman of the Board, William L. improvements, plus the personal time he spent painting, cleaning and overall work on the chapter house. Messick, Lafayette '68 (I), with During the chapter's revival a couple of years ago, he felt the call to be involved, even to the point of Chairman's Award winner John C. recruiting new members for the colony before their triumphant return last year, giving further proof that "rush Layman, Michigan '55. never ends" and that recruitment skills stay with you, even as an alumnus. Sometimes men decide it is time to stop volunteering; others, like this year's recipient, simply keep doing more and more .....truly one of DU's "diamonds in the rough". The honorable mention recipients are: Darrell Holloway, Arlington '98, and Robert F. K. Martin, Minnesota '95 .

•••••• ••••••••••••• ••••••••••• PRESIDENT'S AWARD: Tom Leonard, Michigan '04 The President's Award is designed to recognize the undergraduate member who has best given his time and effort to the betterment of his chapter, campus, and community over the just completed academic year. The candidate should exhibit a high level of academic performance, and a dedication to the principles of Delta Upsilon. This year, the President's Award goes to a brother from the Michigan Chapter. His service to his chapter is unique in that he helped organize efforts to reinstall the chapter, which was successfully accomplished last year. He has served as VP-recruitment and most recently a term as Chapter President. His dedication to DU inspired many of the younger members in his chapter, and during his tenure as Delta Upsilon President, Ed Porter, President, the newly installed chapter raised its average GPA, jumping up six places in the University standings Oklahoma '65 (r), with President's among all fraternities. Award winner Thomas L. Leonard III, The letter of recommendation for this award from US Congressman Mike Rogers, illustrates all of the Michigan '04. leadership and interpersonal skills that this year's recipient displays, all of which is what a DU man should be. Finally, he is very devoted to service at his church, has volunteered at the Boys & Girls Club, helps to tutor his chapter brothers, and also teaches English to Hispanics in the Ann Arbor area so that they can work more effectively in their jobs. Honorable Mention recipients for the President's Award go to Aaron Siders, Kansas State '04 and Joshua Sawyer, Arlington 'OS .

•••••••••••• •••••••••••• •••••••• DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD: Bruce S. Bailey, Denison '58 March 18, 1956 was a great day for the Delta Upsilon. For that was the day when Brother Bruce Bailey recited the Oath of Initiation with the Denison Chapter, thereby cementing his membership in the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Brother Bailey's DU resume already reads like a novel. He has been an involved and dedicated alumnus since the day he graduated in 1958 from Denison University with a degree in economics, and continuing his education at the American Institute of Banking. He also participated in graduate programs at Rutgers, Harvard, and Columbia Universities. Brother Bailey spent his career in the banking industry where he moved up the ladder to finally retire as President of Bank One Corporation. Distinguished Alumnus Award Not only is Brother Bailey civic-minded, having been involved in and recognized by various community given to Bruce S. Bailey, Denison '58 and civic groups, but he is a leader by design. He has served as President or Chairman in nearly half of the 30 plus organizations he has been a part of in the past. Within the last 40 years, he has served Delta Upsilon in some official capacity. He served on the DU Educational Foundation's Board ofTrustees even before he was named the Fraternity Treasurer in 1972. Delta Upsilon was fortunate when on August 2, 1992 Brother Bailey was elected to serve not only as its President, but to date, he is the only man to serve DU as President and Chairman of the Board at the same time. Before, during and since that time, he has faithfully continued to serve as a member of the DU Educational Foundation's Board ofTrustees. An award much deserved by a tireless and faithful brother, and it is proudly awarded by a humbled and grateful brotherhood. 12

UNDERGRADUATE NEWS

After a day of DU alumni and brother events, including an initiation ceremony and a softball game, in which the alumni gave the current brothers a beating, Marty Krasnitz '57 announced that he would be stepping down from the Chicago Chapter alumni board after 40 years of service. His efforts in refounding

the Chapter, as well as guiding their efforts to become better men has been greatly appreciated. Following this announcement, the brothers of DU, both young and old, piled on stage for the 92nd annual University of Chicago InterFraternity Sing Competition. DU Will Shine Tonight and Down Among the Dead Men were sung that night. The Chicago Chapter of Delta Upsilon was decorated with the IF Sing "Spirit Award." This award was given to the fraternity that best exemplified their professed goals as well as those of the University.

Following the Homecoming 2003 disappointing behavior by our Brothers, Delta Upsilon stalwarts again stood up to be counted among those men who BUILD. Staff support for DU from the Student Life Office, under the direction of Dr. Lon Vickers with the assistance of Bruce Peterson, Western Illinois '74, was extraordinary. Charlie Dawes '71, alumni club president and an administrator at

the College, threw himself into helping the chapter as did Dr. Ryan May, faculty advisor and assistant professor of psychology. Dustin Roberts, Bradley '02, of the International DU Headquarters staff visited the chapter throughout the year, making positive suggestions and lending support from the Fraternity. President of Marietta College, Jean Scott, attended DU initiations and encouraged the brothers to change for the better. A new sense of urgency and direction was instilled in the membership of DU in 2003-04 and a new chapter in the long and proud history of Delta Upsilon Fraternity at Marietta College has begun.

North The alumni association of the North Carolina Chapter of Delta UpSilon began construction in August 2004 of their long-anticipated new chapter house on the site of their existing property near the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Permission to build has been received from the Chapel Hill Town Council, and construction is anticipated to be completed in Spring 2005. The undergraduate chapter is currently in reorganization and recruitment of new members is underway with the active support of the International Fraternity represented by Phil McDaniel, Central Florida '03. The location of the new house is an ideal one, one-block from the campus, with three sororities in the immediate vicinity. The new house replaces the fo rmer 80-year old chapter house that was razed in 2002. It is designed in a lodge style concept. The 5,500 square-foot bu ilding will have a chapter room, dining room, game room, TV room and five one-man rooms with private bathrooms to house chapter officers. The estimated cost of the building and related expenses is approximately $900,000 of which the chapter

already has over $500,000 in cash, with the balance to be covered by an additional fund raising effort and a construction loan, to be converted to long-term mortgage financing upon completion in Spring 2005. The North Carolina Chapter of Delta UpSilon was originally founded in 1924 as the Sigma Delta local fraternity. It received its charter from Delta Upsilon in 1953 and acquired its current property (which it owns free and clear) in 1956. It has initiated over I, I00 brothers and has an active alumni association, the North Carolina Delta Upsilon Foundation, headed by Brother Mark H. Prakke '87, a forme r chapter president, who will be serving as adviser to the undergraduates. Faculty advisors for the new colony are Stan Black '61 , a professor and former chairman of the Dept. of Economics, and Randy Myer '67. The co-chairmen of the capital campaign are Brothers Fred Atkins '67 and Don Heacock '64. Brothers desiring to assist in the reorganization effort or join the more than 194 brothers who have already contributed to the capital campaign, or who have not completed their previous pledges to the campaign, should contact the North Carolina Delta Upsilon Foundation, PO. Box 911, Raleigh, NC 27602. For further information contact Brother Atkins at 919-467-8000.

The lona Chapter has grown tremendously over the past academic year in many ways. The Chapter is currently the largest fraternity on campus and is one of the more popular Greek organizations at lona. The college recognized the hard work and dedication by the chapter membership. The Student Government Association awarded the lona Chapter with the Creative Programming Award for its Wheelchair Basketball Charity game, where the lona Men's Basketball team played in wheelchairs against the United Spinal Association Nets, a championship wheelchair basketball team affiliated with the NBA New Jersey Nets. The Chapter raised a considerable amount of money for the United Spinal Association (unitedspinal.org). The event produced one of the largest turnouts for a studentorganized event at lona, much to the delight of the brothers of the Chapter. lona College's Greek Council also recognized the efforts of the Chapter. At its annual awards banquet, the Greek Council awarded the lona Chapter the Social Program of the Year for the chapter's Miss Gael Pageant, and Community Service Event of the Year for Wheelchair Basketball. Former chapter President Jemel Liverpool 'as was elected President of the Student Government Association for the 2004-05 academic year. In a highly contested election, Brother Liverpool was able to pull off the upset victory by a slim margin. Overall, the lona Chapter has been very successful in all aspects of DU life. From community service to building the brotherhood, the lona Chapter is excited and proud of its achievements and is looking forward to another successful academic year.

Brothers in Delta Upsilon, We are extremely grateful to everyone who supported us this past year in our annual fundraising efforts. All of our donors are important to our success and we are proud to be able to recognize each and everyone of you on the following pages. This year will be no different than any of the past years in terms of how important your involvement will be in our efforts. While not trying to sound negative, the number of donors to our annual effort has remained steady at best. I firmly believe that our brotherhood possesses the wherewithal to do better. Therefore I will appeal to all of our brothers. If you supported us last year, please continue to do so. You have no idea how much your loyalty is appreciated by those undergraduates who are the recipients of your kindness. You truly are making a difference in the lives of our undergraduate brothers. And, for those of you who may not have joined us last year, or maybe did not renew for whatever reason, please let me stress how important it is to give back to Delta Upsilon. Quite frankly, if you are waiting to be asked, consider this an ask! If you are waiting until you have "enough to give," please do not wait any longer. As one of our DU brothers has mentioned before, "It is not how much you give, but that you give what you can." The number of donors that we have is equally as important as the dollars we raise. We hope that you will fulfill your "promise to be loyal" from our Oath of Initiation, by maintaining your continuing support of the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation. I would be remiss if I did not thank Brothers Scott Tarter, DePauw '84, and Jack Jadel, Bowling Green '52 who recently concluded their tenure on our Foundation board. Their talents and insight have proved invaluable to the DUEF. We are indebted to both of them and to the service of all of our continuing Trustees and staff for their tireless work. In addition, we are pleased to welcome Brother Bill Rappolt, Lafayette '67 to our Board. Bill's experience brings a new and exciting perspective to the DUEF leadership, and we are thrilled to have him aboard. We are truly excited about the prospect of this fiscal year and all that is to come for our great Fraternity. Please show your support by helping us set a new record of donors to our annual appeal by sending in a gift today. Even the smallest effort of sending a gift, can have the largest effect. We will continue to grow stronger ......... .. because you care.

Beginning this fall, there will be a new addition to the Fraternity's permanent building in Indianapolis with the installation of the Foundation's new Lifetime Recognition Wall.

The recognition is designed to honor those brothers who have exhibited their loyalty through their generous spi rit of giving. The wall currently recognizes all brothers who have amassed a lifetime gift total of $5,000 o r more to the DU Educational Foundation and/or Chapter Educat ional Account. For those who have already reached this plateau, o r once a dono r does reach it, his nameplate will be automatically added. Once a nameplate is on the wall , donors also have an oppo rtunity to have their nameplate moved "up a level " as their lifetime total increases. Dono rs can be recognized at the following levels: $5,000 ..................... Friendship $10,000 ....................Character $25,000 ....................... Culture $50,000 .......................Justice $100,000+ ... . ......... Dikaia Upotheke

Society Society Society Society Society

This permanent fixture honors those brothers whose outstanding generosity demonstrates a commitment to the tradition of yesterday and the vision of tomorrow. Make sure your name is included! Be sure to visit www.deltau.org for more information as it becomes available later this fall!

Leave your legacy and preserve your name for posterity! A charitable bequest to the DU Educational Foundation may be expressed in terms of a specific dollar amount, a percentage of an estate, or as a residual or contingency beneficiary. Wills are important to ensure that wishes regarding assets will be observed and that the estate minimizes taxes or other expenses. The following language is acceptable for inclusion in the will of any DU alumnus: "1 hereby give, devise and bequeath to the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation with headquarters at 8705 Founders Road, Indianapolis, Indiana, the sum of $ ; or the following described property: or the residue of my estate, to be used for the general purposes of the Foundation as the Board of Trustees may direct." 16

In the summer of 2000 The McQuaid Scholarship Fund was created to acknowledge the tremendous service of Delta Upsilon's immediate past president.James D. McQuaid Chicago '60.The creation of the scholarship marked a welcome return to the Foundation's early practices of awarding financial grants to individual DU brothers. The McQuaid Scholarships are awarded on the basis of scholarship, Fraternity/campus involvement. letters of recommendation, and community service.

The Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation is proud to announce this year's recipients of the McQuaid Scholarships:

UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS David L. Brown, North Carolina State '07, is an Eagle Scout and is extremely active in the community with activities that include tutoring elementary school children and at-risk in reading. He is music director of the award-winning "Grains ofTime," a men's a capella ensemble at NCSU, and a member of the Rotaract Club. Even with all of his extracurricular involvement, he still finds time to maintain a 4.0 GPA. One of his most important and most recent activities is seeing his involvement go from that of a colony member to a chapter member, with the triumphant return of DU's North Carolina State Chapter this past spring. When talking about his membership in DU, he says that "through leadership, an individual can bring his goals to fruition, and because we as brothers share the common goal of becoming closer and seeing our brotherhood progress, those who take initiative to move forward are awarded with the support of the Fraternity." Kenneth B. Norton, Kansas State '05, has served his chapter as Vice-President of Member Education and as President. He has also been involved in Student Government and with the Institute for Industrial Engineers, and Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society. He is a member of Blue Key, and boasts an extensive list of community involvement. He is described as being one who exemplifies the Four Founding Principles, and proves that "DU is at the heart of what he believes in." He himself stated, "From the very beginning of my college experience, Delta Upsilon has provided far more opportunities for leadership and personal growth than any other activity. I am grateful for the tremendous experiences I have had with Delta UpSilon." Brother Norton plans to graduate in May of 2005.

GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS David L. Reiner, Rochester '04, has served his chapter in a variety of capacities while maintaining a strenuous course load. He is a member of three different honor societies, including Golden Key, and has been on the Dean's List throughout most of his college career. This brother's list of accomplishments goes on and on, but quite impressive is a quote from one of his references who stated, " ... he exemplifies all that is great about our Fraternity: our Principles, our heritage, our belief in non-secrecy, and our focus on the education of the Renaissance Man:' Brother Reiner has already begun his graduate studies in Israel as he studies to become a Rabbi. His education in Israel will be followed by studies at the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio. Keith G. Hill, Western Illinois '04, has compiled an impressive resume of scholastic honors, having been on the Dean's List, a member of the Golden Key, Blue Key honor societies, as well as Mortar Board and Order of Omega. He graduated in 2004 from Western Illinois UniverSity, is enrolled to pursue a degree in International Management from the same institution in the fall, and plans to stay active in the chapter's activities for a reason from which we can all learn. He stated, "I want incoming members to see that even after graduation, Delta Upsilon is something that stays with a person and has a large effect on their lives. I also want them to see that because of this effect, there are alumni that wish to see them succeed and are willing to help them succeed."

Applications for the 2005 McQUaid Scholarships will be accepted beginning January 1,2005 until April 15, 2005. Additional information on these scholarships is available at www.deltau.org or by contacting Brother Craig S. Sowell, Houston '92 at 317-875-8900 ext. 225 or bye-mail at Sowell@DeltaU.org. Last year's changes to the President's Club proved to be a great success. The new President's Club pin is a big hit! Every year a donor lOins the club (total annual gifts of of $200 or more), a new pin is sent to them, which indicates the number of years he has been a member. Pins are sent with the receipts following each year's gift. Keep your pin current and show off your DU pride! Also, President's Club donors who "opt-in" to receive them, will receive a copy of their chapter's visitation report so they can keep up-to-date on how their chapter Is doing. Reports are sent via email in PDF format (arrangements can be made via mall (or those without email) once the DU leadership consultant has completed the report. Contact Brother Craig Sowell at sowe!l@deltau.ore or via phone for more information. We take great pride in recognixlng all of those who joined the President's Club during the 2003-04 fiscal year!
