“Hi, my name is Rose. I’m 87 years old. May I give you a hug?” “Of course, my name is Dusty. Why are you in college at such a young age?” he smiled as they hugged.
The Motto of Delta Upsilon International Fraternity
Ed Porter, Oklahoma ’65
Rose said, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids! Actually, I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one.” After class they walked to the union and had coffee. Every day for the rest of the semester they did the same. Rose became a campus sweetheart and at the end of the semester the DUs invited her to speak at the football banquet. As she began her speech she dropped her 3 by 5 cards on the floor, and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and said, “I’m sorry I’m so jittery. I gave up beer and this whiskey is killing me! I’ll never get my cards back in order so let me just tell you what I know.” “There are only a few secrets to staying young, being happy and achieving success. You have to find humor every day and you have to have a dream. “There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are 19 years old and lie in bed for one full year, you will turn 20 years old. If I am 87 years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn 88. Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability. “The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.” One week after graduation, Rose passed away. The entire DU house and half of the campus attended her funeral as a tribute to Rose, who taught by example that it’s never too late to be all that you can be. Growing older is mandatory. Growing up is optional. DU is blessed with thousands of young men and old men who are achieving our goal of growing up and becoming better men. God Bless Delta Upsilon. Fraternally,
Ed Porter, Oklahoma ’52 President

Parseghian Awarded Founders Medal In 2001, Delta Upsilon established the Founders Medal to recognize those brothers who have given an extraordinary amount of time and inspirational service to Delta Upsilon, specifically to a particular Chapter. On Friday, July 29, 2005, it was presented for the 14th time at the annual Delta Upsilon Leadership Institute. Founders Medal recipients embody the spirit of Delta Upsilon ideals, follow the example of our Founding Fathers, and exemplify the qualities and traits of a true DU. It was only natural for Mark Parseghian, Lehigh ’49, to be awarded this honor. After he was initiated on June 26, 1946, Brother Parseghian began his lifelong journey of service to Delta Upsilon and the Lehigh Chapter. He is an integral part of the
Lehigh Chapter, and has always been a levelheaded and wise voice of reason. He has served ably as Alumni President for the Lehigh Chapter for m a n y years and has always been an extremely active alumnus. He has a keen sense of always doing what is right for DU and the Lehigh Chapter. His leadership always shined through and he has always kept b ro t h e rhood at the forefront. Nobody can doubt his love for DU, and the loyal and dedicated leadership that he has provided. “Volunteers are a commodity; a rarity. Even more rare are those alumni that commit themselves to Delta Upsilon for eternity.” Brother Parseghian is a shining example that membership in DU never ends.

The Westward Wandering of the Carthage Delegation written by Vasilos Bournas ’06 and edited by Daniel Ross-Jones ’07
I
f justice is our foundation, then it is held in place with brotherhood. We see our brothers often, if not everyday. We interact with them, listen to them, even when we are in fact not present. For some chapters, their brotherhood is strong, but for others, brotherhood is nothing more than a notion. The Carthage Chapter leans towards the former, but even we sometimes forget the true potential of brotherhood. While in Denver for the Leadership Institute six of us from Carthage were presented with an opportunity to travel west towards the mountains and do some hiking. In order to do so, we would miss the Undergraduate Convention. Brother Christopher Alms ’07 was the greatest brother to the six of us that weekend, sacrificing a trip to the mountains so that he could attend the meetings and update us when we returned. Looking back, I believe that none of us realized the impact we had on each other throughout the trip. As we approached a trail leading to a peak upwards to almost 12,000 feet, one of our brothers informed us that he, in fact, had asthma. Perfect…up in the thin air of the mountains, far from any medical aid, with an asthmatic. As sarcastic as that may sound, our first reaction was the opposite: We would stay together and slow down when necessary. After taking a couple of short breaks, we reached a scenic lookout and
6
D e l t a U p s i l o n - T h e M e n ’s N o n - S e c re t Fr a t e r n i t y
simply sat down to take in the breathless view of the mountains. It was impressive, as the considerable size of the mountains instantly made us all feel insignificant. Regardless, we were there. The sight was beautiful as well as miles away from the nearest town. That day made me realize exactly what it means to be in Delta Upsilon. Joining the fraternity is like observing the mountains from a distance: something great lies ahead. As we continue on our path through Delta Upsilon, we are given the necessary tools and resources to become better men. And begin climbing. One of our brothers may have obstacles in his life that might hinder him from reaching the top at the same time as the rest of us. It is our responsibility—not out of feigned care, but no less than our love for our brothers— to walk the path side by side with him. As we reach the top, we will see the world from a grand angle, something only a few would see in their lifetimes. And we would not be doing this alone because we are surrounded by our brothers, each taking in the same view. Realistically, as a 20-year old undergraduate member of Delta Upsilon, I can only speak of idealistic walks of life, since today I only stand at the base of the mountain. The future is daunting, but I know one very crucial fact: I am surrounded by my brothers, eager to make the same trip to the top where our older, more experienced brothers wait for us in anticipation.

The Kevin Byrne Memorial Golf Tournament was a big success! Over 100 golfers competed, raising $17,704 for the V Foundation for cancer research. The tournament was held in memory of Kevin Byrne, Central Missouri ’85, Executive Vice President of the Central Missouri State University Chapter of Delta Upsilon, serving in 1982 – 1983. Kevin died of esophageal cancer on December 21, 2004, at his home in Plano, Texas. Kevin’s wife, Laura, and the rest of the Byrne family organized the tournament, which took place on July 30, 2005, at Firewheel Golf Park in Garland, Texas. Some of the participating golfers said it was the best tournament they had played in, how smoothly the tournament ran, the number of prizes, and the generous goody bag. Tacoma (Washington) City Councilman Kevin R. Phelps, Washington State ’77, was appointed chairman of Sound Transit’s finance committee in 2002. He has now left the board amid accolades that he was a key figure in turning Sound Transit around. At the time Phelps began his challenge, Sound Transit was reeling from revelations that Seattle’s light rail line would be vastly more expensive than voters had been told and would take three years longer to build. The $500 million grant had been suspended and the federal government was demanding accountability and proof the agency could control costs. Today, the federal grant has been restored, and Sound Transit is constructing a 14-mile light rail line that is projected to be completed on schedule and come in under the budget set for it in 2001. Besides his councilman duties, Brother Phelps is chairman of the Tacoma-Pierce County Board of Health and Pierce Transit, and managing partner in the Tacoma Landmark Convention Center.

Annual Financial Report by the Treasurer Delta Upsilon completed its 2003-04 fiscal year in a strong financial position with net assets of $2.41 million, including cash and investments of $2.17 million. For the year, net assets increased by approximately $167,000 as strong investment returns more than offset a general fund operating deficit. The operating deficit was in line with our approved budget and reflects disciplined expense control in line with our membership numbers. The Permanent Trust Fund (PTF) experienced a gain of $234,000 this past year, or just over 14% on beginning net assets. The Fund continues to be managed by Brother Maury Mandel, Chicago ’55, and we thank him for his continued service to our Fraternity. The Loss Prevention Fund is a designated fund within our Fraternity that supports our efforts to maintain reasonable insurance rates for our members. At the end of the year, net assets stand at $669,000 and are available to meet future claim expenses should this be needed. It is noteworthy that our Fraternity has had excellent claim experience over the past five years and that our insurance premiums are the lowest charges to any large fraternity.
I n v e s t m e n t i n Building Better Men The core purpose of Delta Upsilon is Building Better Men. In support of this purpose, our professional staff continues to execute exciting programming that meets the challenge of developing leaders within Delta Upsilon for the 21st Century. Programming dollars were again directed to our exemplary educational conferences. Undergraduate member fees as well as chapter based conference assessments cover only a portion of these costs. During the past year grants of $96,000 from the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation as well $116,000 from the Permanent Trust Fund were used to subsidize programming costs. 12

F u n d i n g P ro g r a m m i n g G ro w t h To support Building Better Men at our chapters, revenue growth is essential to cover the cost of our membership education programming. Revenue growth has come and will continue to come from three sources: 1) Undergraduate Fees – in 2003-04, individual member fees were held at $100 per man per year. Future revenue growth will come from efforts to increase average chapter size. Research shows that chapters must maintain an average membership size of 40 men to maintain financial viability. I encourage all alumni to help your chapters meet the challenge of expanding membership. 2) Permanent Trust Fund – this fund with assets of $1.8 million, provides additional support to the Fraternity’s operations. During 2003-04, $116,000 was transferred from the Permanent Trust Fund to the General Operating Fund of the Fraternity for educational programming. It is the policy of the Board of Directors to restrict withdrawals from the Permanent Trust Fund to 7% of year-end assets. 3) Alumni support in the form of grants from the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation. Grants for the year totaled $96,000. The Fraternity is very grateful for the support of the Foundation in supporting the educational initiatives of the Fraternity. We are looking forward to increases in the amounts available for educational grants as investment returns improve and fundraising efforts continue to expand.
The Bottomline Delta Upsilon is dedicated to achieving its core purpose of Building Better Men. The Fraternity has been successful in developing programming to further this purpose.

DELTA UPSILON EDUCATIONAL F O U N D AT I O N A M E S S AG E F RO M T H E C H A I R M A N Stephen K. Rowley, Ohio ‘65 The Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation is extremely grateful to all DU brothers and friends who supported our fundraising efforts in the 2004-05 fiscal year. We are proud to be able to recognize each and every donor on the succeeding pages, and provide some highlights of this past fundraising year. I would like to personally thank brothers Rick Holland, Syracuse ’83 and Allan Lansing, Western Ontario ’53 for their service to the DUEF board as they step down from their posts as Trustees. Their leadership will be sorely missed. Likewise, we are excited to have Roy Allan, Lehigh ’68 and Marty Krasnitz, Chicago ’57 joining our wonderful team. We look forward to their adept leadership in the years ahead. Our mission for the 2005-06 appeal is already underway. We will be stepping up our efforts to increase the number of donors to our annual appeal in addition to our many other pursuits. The call is out once again to all brothers: If you are listed on the succeeding pages, please continue with your loyal giving, you are truly making a difference. For those that have lapsed, or perhaps you have not ever given, please understand how important your participation really is. More than 65,000 living DU brothers have not given a gift of any kind to DU in their lifetime. If each of those men gave just $20 a year, we would raise an additional 1.3 million dollars each year. This proves that there is strength in numbers. Please do not wait any longer. We’re worthy of your support. Fraternally,

Programs & Services Supported by the DU Educational Foundation For over 50 years, the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation has existed to help change the lives of the undergraduate members. Through the generous annual gifts of our brothers, the Foundation has been able to provide educational grants to the Fraternity, DU chapters, and individual members in a variety of ways including the following. ◆ The Leadership Institute brings together brothers from all chapters each summer for a four-day experience that includes educational seminars for chapter officers, interactive sessions focusing on the Fraternity’s Four Founding Principles, a community service event, and a model initiation. ◆ The Winter Educational Conference typically includes the Presidents Academy, the Recruitment Symposium, and the Charles Evans Hughes DUEL (Delta Upsilon Emerging Leaders) Program. ◆ Membership Education. The Founding Fathers of DU envisioned an association that is committed to the education and personal growth of its brothers. DU continues to evaluate its personal growth and development curriculum tailored to each individual DU member. Regional Leadership Seminars (RLS) engage all chapters in the early spring at the province level for an intense two-day leadership training agenda coordinated with alumni leadership. ◆ The McQuaid Scholarship/Fellowship awards undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships of $2,500 each to deserving DU members.
◆ Chapter Educational Accounts provide for restricted funds within the endowment of the Foundation. Donors have the ability to make tax-deductible gifts benefiting the educational needs of a specific chapter. ◆ The Leadership Consultant Program provides on-campus resources for chapters and brothers to improve their chapter’s operation and effectiveness. The Foundation provides an annual grant to help defray the cost of educational workshops, seminars, and retreats administered by the leadership consultants. ◆ The Alumni Volunteer Conference, conducted during the Leadership Institute, provides instruction and problemsolving seminars for those who serve as alumni volunteers to our chapters. ◆ The Delta Upsilon/Boys & Girls Club service partnership was created as a forum for local DU chapters to actively engage in grass roots volunteerism. The involvement with Boys & Girls Clubs affords DU brothers the opportunity to develop character and lasting friendships. Additional support includes: ● The Quarterly, the Cornerstone, and other educational publications. ● IHQ summer internship program. ● Grants for UIFI to individual members.

The James D. McQuaid Scholarships In the summer of 2000 The McQuaid Scholarship Fund was created to acknowledge the tremendous service of Delta Upsilon’s immediate past president, James D. McQuaid Chicago ’60.The creation of the scholarship marked a welcome return to the Foundation’s early practices of awarding financial grants to individual DU brothers. The McQuaid Scholarships are awarded on the basis of scholarship, Fraternity/campus involvement, letters of recommendation, and community service.
The Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation is proud to announce this year’s recipients of the McQuaid Scholarships: J. McQuaid
Undergraduate Scholarships S t e p h e n N . A r y e e , DePauw ‘07, is a member of the Student Cabinet, serves as an officer in the Young Economists Society, and also as President of the International Students Association. Having come to college after graduating high school in Ghana, Africa, finding acceptance and support in this new environment, as he puts it, has been a very important component in his educational successes. Since arriving as a freshman student, he has found that acceptance within the four walls of Delta Upsilon. As he puts it, “I have come to realize that being a DU means being the best I can be with whatever I have been given. I live each day for this noble cause, one of humility, one of service and one of excellence. I live each day, a life that shows the DU difference.”
J o s h u a D. Ko e n , Arlington ‘07, boasts an impressive resume both in Delta Upsilon, his campus, and in his community. He had held many positions within his chapter before being elected as the current chapter president. He is also very active on his campus as a Student Congress Senator, Psi Chi National Honors Society, UTA Psychology Society, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, as well as being a member of the Honors College. One of his references stated that he “continues to be the model of leadership that the chapter uses to guide our younger initiated members.” After graduation he plans to attend graduate school with the goal of earning a PhD in Clinical Psychology.
Graduate Fellowships J o h n S . A d a m s , Wichita ’04, served quite actively in his chapter with positions in recruitment and membership education. He, too, has compiled an impressive resume’ of scholastic honors, having also been on the Dean’s Honor Roll, and being a member of the Order of Omega. After spending his last semester studying abroad in Australia, he graduated in 2004 from Wichita State University with two degrees; one in International Business and the other in Economics. After finishing up two years as a Delta Upsilon traveling consultant in early spring 2006, he plans to continue his studies abroad in Salamanca, Spain.
J u a n D. Ve l a s q u e z , Purdue ’98 During his years as an undergraduate, he was heavily involved in the operations of his chapter, serving as both Treasurer and President, while also serving as President of Order of Omega, as well as being active in a number of other organizations on campus. He is a member of several different honor societies, including Golden Key, Mortar Board, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Alpha Pi Mu Industrial Engeineering Honor Society. He has received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University, and is currently at work on his PhD at Purdue.
Applications for the 2006 McQuaid Scholarships will be accepted beginning January 1, 2006 until April 15, 2006. Additional information on these scholarships is available at www.deltau.org or by contacting Brother Craig S. Sowell, Houston ’92 at 317-875-8900 ext. 225 or by e-mail at Sowell@DeltaU.org.

LIFETIME GIVING RECOGNITION
The Oak Circle
Delta Upsilon’s Undergraduate Giving Program “I donated to the Oak Circle because I felt I was in position to be able to help my brothers and to support the scholarship. The scholarship recipients at the past two Leadership Insitutes have been great examples of what we, as brothers should strive for, and I believe in supporting what makes DU better.” Kirk Brassfield, Fresno ’07 The Oak Circle’s fourth year finished by, once again, setting an all-time record! Total dollars contributed to the Oak Circle Scholarship Fund, through undergraduate and parent’s gifts, totaled $11,362. The money raised through the Oak Circle is added to an endowment to provide $1000 scholarships to be awarded each year at the Leadership Institute. The third annual scholarship was awarded this summer at the 2005 Leadership Institute in Denver, Colorado. The Scholarship Committee chose B ro t h e r Jo h n S . B o s t w i c k , Kansas State ’07 as the Oak Circle Scholarship recipient. Brother Bostwick received a check for $1000 to help defray the costs of his education. Brothers can give at any level, and receive recognition at Conferences and in the DU Quarterly. However, all donors who gift $25 receive, in addition, a collector’s lapel pin whose design changes each year. In addition to individual recognition, chapters are also recognized for their cumulative giving total in a fiscal year. Chapters are identified as Bronze, Silver, or Gold Chapters, with cumulative totals of Top Giving Province $250, $500, and $1000 respectively. This year’s awarded chapters were: B ro n ze L ev e l : Houston, Kansas, Kansas State, Kent State, Lafayette, Miami, Nebraska, Northwestern, Rochester, San Jose and Province 9 Washington. S i l ve r L ev e l : Central Florida, Indiana and Manitoba. G o l d L ev e l : Minnesota. This year also marked the second year for the Oak Circle “Province Challenge”, whereby each Top Giving Chapter Province strives to raise the most money among all the provinces. For the province that raises the Manitoba most money, each participating chapter received a discount on their Leadership Institute (LI) registration. Repeating for the second year in a row as winner of the Province Challenge was P rov i n c e 9 . The individual c h ap t e r that raised the most received one free paid registration to the LI, with that honor going to the M a n i t o b a C h ap t e r. Lastly, the DUEF recognized the efforts of B ro t h e r D av i d D. M c Ke ag , I V, Minnesota ’04 who, through his efforts, have helped make the Oak Circle the success it is. To recognize him, the “Undergraduate Donor of the Year” was changed to the “David D. McKeag Oak Circle Donor Award”. It is awarded annually to an individual or chapter whose efforts had the greatest impact on the Oak Circle Program. The renamed award was awarded this year to brothers of the M a n i t o b a C h ap e r. The 2005-06 Oak Circle year began with a great response at this year’s Leadership Institute, with 123 undergraduates responding with gifts that totaled nearly $3,000! Last year’s undergraduate donor total for the entire year was 91 donors, so we have already eclipsed last year’s record of donors in just one weekend! Donors to this year’s Oak Circle receive the 5th year Anniversary color lapel pin, pictured above. Lifetime Giving Recognition Last October, there was a new addition to the Fraternity’s permanent building in Indianapolis with the installation of the Foundation’s new Lifetime Recognition Wall. The recognition is designed to honor those brothers who have exhibited their loyalty through their generous spirit of giving. The wall currently recognizes all brothers who have amassed a lifetime gift total of $5,000 or more to the DU Educational Foundation and/or Chapter Educational Account. For those who have already reached this plateau, or once a donor does reach it, his nameplate will be automatically added. Once a nameplate is on the wall, donors also have an opportunity to have their nameplate moved “up a level” as their lifetime total increases. Donors can be recognized at the following levels: $5,000 Friendship Society $10,000 Character Society $25,000 Culture Societ $50,000 Justice Society $100,000+Dikaia Upotheke Society This permanent fixture honors those brothers whose outstanding generosity demonstrates a commitment to the tradition of yesterday and the vision of tomorrow. Since its installation, over 30 names have been added! Make sure your name is included!

LIFETIME GIVING RECOGNITION
President’s Club
Started over 30 years ago by then-President W. Donald Watkins, North Carolina ’27, the President’s Club honors all donors within a fiscal year who gift a total of $200 or more to the annual fund. In the 2004-05 fiscal year, we hit our goal by having over 500 Brothers attain membership in the club by giving to the Annual Fund.) Members of the President’s Club Annual Fund receive an annual “year” pin with each renewal, and various benefits and advance notice of special events as applicable. Also, members who “opt-in” to receive them, will receive a copy of their chapter’s visitation report so they can stay up-to-date on their chapter. Reports are sent via email in PDF or by mail. Contact Brother Craig Sowell at sowell@Deltau.org or via phone for more information. Help us to maintain our level of 500+ President’s Club members this year by planning to renew or join by June 30, 2006! While in Denver, Colorado for the 2005 Leadership Institute, more than 250 DU Brothers traveled to five different locations of Boys & Girls Clubs in the metro Denver area. At each Club they helped facilitate and participated in events such as kickball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, knockout, game-room games, musical chairs, and cup-stacking. At the end of the event awards were drawn and given to B&GC members who showed high participation in the day’s events. The events went smoothly and were a great way to display the teamwork, leadership, and service of the Brothers of Delta Upsilon Fraternity, a service partner of Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Canada.

A New Chapter in Leadership T h e C a m p a i g n f o r Delta Upsilon In 2004, the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation embarked upon a three-year, comprehensive fundraising campaign to secure the future of its undergraduate leadership programming – particularly at the chapter level. With the help of alumni and friends, the Foundation expects to raise over $2.5 million in pledges and gifts in support of chapter leadership programming, training and development. This goal will allow Delta Upsilon to provide 100-200 chapter leadership scholarships, thus increasing undergraduate attendance at DU’s impactful leadership programs such as the Leadership Institute. The following is a list of donors thus far, to the campaign. If you have not already become a part of this important effort, we invite you to join ANew Chapter in Leadership: The Campaign for Delta Upsilon.
