How can schools lead on driving sustainability?

A huge 80% of school waste is recyclable and with almost 34,000 schools in the United Kingdom, a concerted movement can have a significant and long-lasting effect. Educating students en masse becomes a rich and powerful channel for promoting the value of recycling and enforcing the application of the 6Rs.

Time and resources in allocated lessons allow D&T departments to focus, educate and demonstrate the benefits of recycling. With this foundation, departments can take it to the next level. Some schools and colleges are actively working with the wider community and manufacturers to develop programmes that help make a difference and the D&T department is perfectly aligned to driving it.

The more D&T educators can do to engrain the principles of recycling and sustainability, the more students will discover the benefits of developing a sustainable mindset – not only helping to save the planet but to also establish skills for the workplace and beyond.

In the words of Sir David Attenborough...
