Oscilloscopes

Oscilloscopes are used extensively in physics, for analysing electrical signals of current; sound; DC voltage; capacitance etc., but they are also used in biology to investigate the action potential in nerves, and in medicine as EEGs (to measure brain activity), ECGs to measure heart activity and EMGs to look at muscle activity. Not bad for Blondel’s 1893 invention!

A pH meter measures acidity/alkalinity of a solution based on a voltage difference between 2 electrodes, often within the same ‘probe’ in a solution, which depends on the number of free H+ ions.

A conductivity meter measures the current passing through a test solution. Since free ions will conduct electricity, the more free ions in solution, the higher the conductivity of the solution.
