I would like to personally welcome you to the International Academy of Design & Technology Chicago’s 35th annual fashion show, EVOLVE 2013. Tonight you will be viewing the amazing designs created by the stars of the evening, our Fashion Design students. They have worked tirelessly for this opportunity to showcase their talents, as have many students from our other academic programs who are also playing key roles in producingthis spectacular event: All branding assets for the Evolve show, from programs to tickets, have been developed by our visual communications students in a special topics class. The multimedia clips identifying the show segments have been created by our Video and Animation students. During tonight’s presentationthe video crews and the music team are Comprised of students representing Multiple Dimensions and the International Music Club two of our student organizations. The production of tonight’s show — from the casting, to the dressing of the models backstage,to the setting up of the runway and venue — was the work of our dedicated Merchandising Management students. We are also very pleased to be a sponsor of Latino Fashion Week. As you are probably already aware, this is a very caring and deserving organization. Finally, I would like to thank all of our dedicated faculty, staff, sponsors, vendors and colleagues at Career Education Corporation, for making IMAGINE 2013 not only a splendid showcase forour students, but also an evening these students will never forget. And THANK YOU for supportingour students by attending IMAGINE 2013 and acknowledging our students inspiring accomplishments.

Eugene St.Frimpong was born and raised in Kumasi Ghana where he was exposed to a contemporary style. His passion and inspiration derives from the beauty of traditional gowns worn by women in churches and weddings. Eugene spent hours admiring the craft of different world renowned designers and their techniques of creating beautiful garments. Being self taught, he began to create his own garments and continued to perfect his craft. He then took the extra step by acquiring his B.A. in fashion design. College did not only advance his skills, but also paved the way for numerous channels of opportunities. St.Frimpong couture clothing is more than an image and personality, but it’s a creative movement to empower women by merging their inner beauty and confidence with an elegant and edgy style. info@stfrimpong.com / www.stfrimpong.com

Elizabeth Smith Fashions is named after lead designer La Tonya Williams’ grandmother, the late Clara Elizabeth Smith Cheatem Barber. Her name represents true class, beauty, and elegance for the brand. La Tonya Williamsestablished the company in August 2011, her inspiration stemming from the history of designers in her family along with her dedication to sewing at the young age of 10. She may have originally earned a degree in mathematics, but fashion was always knocking on her door. Graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the International Academy of Design Technology in 2009, La Tonya is making a mark on the fashion world -- one stitch at a time. In 2011, she was second runnerupin Kenmore’s So You Wanna To Be A Designer reality show. In March 2012, she was selected as a Designer in Residence at the Chicago Fashion Incubator - A City of Chicago sponsored program to help fashion designers start a business. In addition, La Tonya was recognized in numerous mediums, including magazines, commercials, social media, i.e. YouTube, FaceBook, Twitter, etc. Elizabeth Smith Fashions specializes in blouses designed to add a little pizzazz to the work ensemble or to kick off the after work affair. How do I differ from other designers: I believe I differ from other designers because of my simplicity and detail orientation, which together, creates an authenticity that articulates nothing other than elegance. Not only do I aim to make each woman see themselves as beautiful, I aim to make them stand-out in the crowd.
Everyone wants that special garment in their closet that makes them feel empowered; Anastasia Chatzka’s garments give women that sensation. Anastasia conceives highly innovative garments that are always leading the fashion trends. Anastasia combines her interest in making feminine, fun, colorful, and edgy clothes, with her initial training from prolific designers in New York City such as Anna Sui and Betsy Johnson. Anastasia draws upon her training and experiences to produce garments imbued with hautecouture craftsmanship and intelligence while remaining true to her street-style sensibilities of independence, authenticity, and non-conformity. Anastasia strives to rise above the recent trend towards ‘fast-fashion’ by concentrating on manufacturing her Collections domestically and collaborating with highly skilled artisans. The popularity of the Anastasia Chatzka boutique in trendy Wicker Park allowed Anastasia to outgrow the space she held for three years and begin to wholesale her unique designs into designer boutiques nationally. Although she specializes in dresses that include elegant sheer couture ball gowns, she is now in development of a lifestyle brand that includes ready-to-wear, sassy undergarments,cocktail/ evening dresses, and hip men’s accessories composed of signature custom prints designed by Anastasia herself. On August 10, 2013 - Anastasia opened the doors to an even larger retail location in the Ukrainian Village - the Anastasia Atelier/Boutique located at Damen & Augusta.
Pop art Began in the 1950’s, But Became very popular in the 1960’a. It started in the United Kingdom, but became a true art movement in new york city with artists like andy warhol and jasper johns. IADT students, with the guidance of mentors and faculty, are the core of this event each year. In the past, Imagine has taken volunteers and tried to guide them in the position that would work best for them. This system worked well, but since IADT has reinvigorated its dedication to provide its students with professional-level experience, the show had to change to reflect this. Evolve 2013 has more diverse students involved than ever before. A new application process was implemented to simulate working experience. Additional contributions were made by the Behind the Scene club and by a class dedicated to creating all printed materials. With all of these exciting improvements, the event has evolved from a volunteer opportunity to a building block into students’ futures. One of the biggest changes to the show this year involved a new selection process. This year, the tables were turned and students themselves had to choose which position they felt they were best suited for. Prospective volunteers were required to fill out an application and go through an interview process. Students who wished to participate in the show needed to take their duties as seri-
ously as their future careers. Susan Wade— Lead Instructor at IADT—acted as the Human Resources representative and began taking applications, which included previous work experience, recent employers, and references in mid-July and then conducted interviews with students to choose the best candidates to fill the positions. This year there were four main positions available. The Lead Sponsorship Coordinator and Sponsorship Coordinator were responsible for preparing gift bags and handling the front of house. The Lead Assistant, and Assistant Producer included model selection, back of house, and coordinating the lineup. By competing with each other for these positions, a sense of rigorous professionalism was fostered. In addition, these students are now able to put this as a job on their resume and speak about it in future interviews. Along with a new application process, SpecialTopics class VC495 was tasked with creating all the designs for the show. Special Topicsbrought together a variety of students: graphic, communications, video, and web.
The First use of the word “Pop” to describe art was by scottish artist eduardo Paolozzi. “Pop Art” was then used in 1954 by artist John McHale.
In comparison to english pop, which was more referential and subjective, american pop was considered emblematic, anonymous and aggressive.
This diverse team designed and collaborated on the Evolve logo and all the secondary images appearing in the printed work, as well as sketching initial designs. Graphic design students produced direct mailers, posters, and booklets. The direct mailer was an especially productive project because students learned what it was like to have mandatory mailing information on their printed work. They also strengthened their skills by working with actual copy from writers. While the graphics team was hard at work, the communications students wrote all the articles that appear in the booklet and all of the copy that appears in the printed materials. Communications students upheld their “jack of all trades” reputation and maintained the social media outlets for the show, worked on the budget, and wrote the copy. Working with the design students, the video and animation students created a motion graphic to go along with the theme of the show. They also worked with the IADT iPhone app and created content for it. Web design students built and maintained the Evolve website which featured information on the show. Each of these students worked hard to meet urgent deadlines while collaborating across many disciplines.
larger community: “Behind The Scenes is a student-governed organization whose purpose is to guide fashion merchandising students through real industry experiences. From working backstage at fashion shows and volunteering at community organizations, our members are able to network with various local industry leaders to better understand the fashion world. Behind The Scenes is grateful to have been a part of various events through Chicago, such as Macy’s Glamorama, Chicago Fashion Incubator’s Pop- Up Shop, J.Cheikh’s fashion show, and more.” Being a part of this club gives students exposure, experience, and networking they can use even after graduation. IADT has truly evolved for this year’s fashion and design show. By working on something together as a school, students gain valuable insight into the working world; they learn to work as a group and they must deal with strict deadlines. A new selection process, increased class participation, and involvement of the Behind the Scenes club are just some of the ways that IADT creates a place in which students gain as much professional experience as possible while still in school. Evolve 2013 is not just a fashion and design show: it is the beginning of a new breed of graduates who are more prepared than ever to enter their careers.
With the Special Topics class and Susan Wade’s employee selection doing their part, there was still a lot more to be done behind the scenes. Behind the Scenes club former president Daniel Hernandez explains the club’s involvement in the Evolve show, as well as other events around the
The main concept english pop artists considered was theme or metaphor. On the other hand, warhol’s motto was “I think Everybody Should be a Machine.”

Since 1979, the IADT fashion show has been a staple of the school’s culture. The show embodies months of hard work from all the students at IADT, culminatingin a lively event where everyone can see how the exciting product of their efforts. The show has been “Imagine” since 2005, but this year IADT has changed the title to “Evolve”—inspired by the school’s commitment to helping students reach their full potential in and after school; in addition to a fashion show, it has also now become a portfolio showcase. The focus is on creating a “new breed” of students who are ready to enter their fields with the skills they learn here. Not only are students here well prepared for a career, but also they make meaningful contributions within their future industries. Their evolution at IADT involves learning useful skills and having the confidence to apply them. Evolve 2013 is a fantastic opportunity for all students to participate in a portfolio-strengthening project. Students from each department are able to contribute, and all students bring their unique abilities and backgrounds. Aside from being an opportunity for portfolio building, the show is also an outstanding way for students to collaborate—a skill that is becoming increasingly important. Evolve 2013 is truly a collaborative effort of students from every area: Design, Fashion, Media Arts, Technology, and Business.
Design
The design students at IADT created all of the collateral for Evolve 2013. All printed materialscome from the design students. Direct mailers, programs, tickets and more contain students’ concepts and writing. Using team decision-making skills, design students also created and chose a logo for Evolve 2013 that appears on all collateral. Fashion design students created all of the garments shown in the fashion portion of the show. Throughout their time at IADT, fashion students learn pattern making and much more from professionals working in the field. They use these skills to create the collection shown in Evolve.
Business
Fashion merchandising students learn the business end of fashion and contributed to Evolve 2013 by organizing the event. These students learn math, buying, and how the consumer interacts with clothing.
Media Arts Media arts at IADT contain up and coming careers such as video & animation and web design. These students built the website for the show, the motion graphics shown on screen, and the video content. Media arts students also worked with the Aurasma application to build a graphics simulation. Students using this app worked with QR codes. Knowledge of current technology such as QR codes are heavily in demand right now and students in media arts are prepared to enter this up and coming career path.
Technology
Technology students here handle all of the computer systems and ensure everything in the show is running smoothing. They get the website up and running and do much of the behind the scenes work. Information Technology is a field that is in high demand, andthe students in this major contribute greatly to the inner workings of Evolve show as well as the schools day to day operations.
