Website Having had a good level of understanding of how to code I have started to create a website after attending the beginner and intermediate HTML5 / CSS3 workshops. Any problems I had could be easily be sorted out using any one of the extensive arrays of online resources available. I believe I have made a fairly decent start with 270 lines of CSS code and several web pages. Which in total took approximately 50 or more hours so far. Although I’m currently looking to change the site to have the majority of information accessible on the front page via sliding panels to make it more interactive. I also want to make the website more dynamic by changing set pixel dimensions to percentages to accommodate different screens while using all of the same code which would contain ‘hooks’ to detect the size of the screen it’s being viewed on. I still have a lot to learn in regards to web display and making my coding lighter, cleaner and more intricate.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION Adaptability & Accommodation The latest HTML5 / CSS3 workshop made me realise I had not thought about the wider range of media that could, and would hopefully access my website. Most modern monitors would have an approximate width of 1400 pixels or above, older monitors use a width of roughly 800 pixels, and modern touchscreen phones have an approximate screen width of 480 pixels. By using the same piece of code, I can accommodate all potential screen sizes by detecting the screen width and then resizing the website accordingly. I also want to minimise the amount of pages the website has in total by moving much of the media onto the front page and making it more interactive. I plan to introduce links which move panels vertically to reveal imagery which can be scrolled through horizontally. The reason for this change is to make the website more user friendly and it will accommodate a greater audience. The only problem that I have left that I have yet to solve is the Windows XP market, as the latest version of Inter Explorer that works with this operating system is IE8, which doesn’t support the latest HTML and CSS versions.

Exploded diagram of how I intend to restructure the website.

Adaptability & Accommodation All of these screenshots demonstrate how an adaptive website should react to resizing of the internet browser. This means that no information should be hanging off the edge of the screen and the user can simply scroll down the page, rather than having to scroll up down and left to right. This simplistic approach enables easier readability of the website. All screenshots featured on this page are from http:// mediaqueri.es/

STAMPS Initially I started on the brief which was concerned with getting consumers to be more aware with their consumption of energy. I found it quite difficult to get into, wanting to generate something a bit different. I chose to do the other brief as I felt it wasn’t trying to appeal to peoples guilty conscience to change their habits. I began researching how to do cadels and flourishes properly to generate some intricate lettering. I thought the appearance of intricate lettering would transport the viewer to an earlier time when text was written by hand or hand printed. Having started the brief quite late I never really got any meaningful outcomes as I found the briefs to be uninteresting and uninspiring. I felt it was best to conclude the brief and move on to something I could spend more time on that would yield better results.

STAMPS These are some of the designs I generated. In regards to the top row I decidede to go for a more classic appearance. I tried to keep a vintage kind of feel about the stamp. The black lettering on the stamps is not my own work, I used this as placeholder imagery to get a feel for what it would look like. I had planned to generate my own designs but didn’t get time to make anything that I felt was finished to a high enough quality. The idea behind the designs on the second row was to have a digital influenced border. I took inspiration from binary and morse code. The reason for having it as a border was to show that its been pushed to the side, leaving space in the center for the handmade lettering to take the main focus of attention. Photographic Compilation As the year has progressed It has become increasingly noticeable that I have not yet externalised my work enough. I missed out on getting my work exhibited at the rag factory last semester due to changing idea midway through the ‘LAB’ project. Seeing as though I have taken a giant step towards photography year on year, I figured I should put together a small publication from each photographic project I have embarked upon. I intend to use this as a platform from which to strive towards securing a solo exhibition in the near future. The zine is extremely edited down and the photographs are very small in the majority of cases. The reason I have done this is to try and leave the observer wanting to see more, which leaves me with the opportunity to follow this up with an externalisation process on a bigger scale. If it wasn’t overly expensive I would like to print the zine out in one long strip with my Holga 135 panoramic on one side and the whole zine on the other. I would use a concertina fold so that the zine would still operate and function as a zine on one side but once the viewer has finished with it, they can turn it over and place it upon their wall as an attractive and unusual poster.

Obscurity Photographic Experimentation

This camera is one of the easiest film cameras to construct by yourself. By going through the process of making a matchbox pinhole camera you learn about the very basics of photography and the way that light travels. The outcomes that are achieved are abstract and provocative. Due to the proximity of the film to the pinhole the images will inherit a vignetted effect. This camera and these images are the first time I had ever experimented with pinhole photography and creating my own cameras. This project served as the perfect platform to explore photography from. I personally found the idea of

creating your own cameras as something beyond my own capability. This project has explicitly been the seed from which all of my work has grown. Whether you enjoy making things, finding out how things work or have an interest in photography I would encourage you to try out the construction and use of a matchbox pinhole camera.

Can a Camera be a Book?

Homely Nostalgia

This project explored the parameters which define a book. I looked at form, content, purpose and usage. To what extent can a book on a subject become the subject? The book consists of a felt casing with a zip attached and a shutter mechanism on the cover with a pinhole beneath it. The contents of the book are the photographic results of experimental development techniques and prints. The negatives that were used in the experiments came from a matchbox pinhole camera from an earlier project. The book cam project seemed like the ideal container to externalise the work I had

All the images taken with this camera are located in the village of Lakenheath in Suffolk, England. The images feature Mill Pond, a place I used to fish in my school years and Lakenheath warren. With these images I tried to focus on form and texture. I tried to take images around the pond in a panorama that I could later scan in and stitch together with the aid of photoshop. Both of which came out really well. I really enjoy the atmospheric nature that a pinhole camera portrays and is why I prefer its usage over the typical DSLR. Another reason why I prefer not to use a DSLR for this type of photography is because of how

done previously while giving me the opportunity to be experimental in the darkroom.

detached it feels when compared to the primitive nature of the pinhole camera, which gives the user a greater sense of involvement.

Scrupulous Construction This wooden camera has been the most time consuming project that I have embarked upon. The design and construction is all of my own work. The most problematic part of the construction was getting it all glued together. I had planned to use a black mastic type glue in order to try and keep it light tight. But it didn’t stick together very well at all. I used normal wood glue and the back panels had to be reglued as they slipped while under pressure. I’m relatively happy with the quality of

the photographs and they’re a little wider than typical photographs which makes it difficult to get them developed in high street stores. The only light leak the camera has is the area where the negative feeds through to be exposed. Overall I would say this is one of the more successful and thorough projects. Epsom, Surrey, Hook Road, Railway Bridge

This is the latest experiment that is still in progress. The main idea behind this camera is to get a 360° panoramic photograph that is slightly distorted where the pinholes provide juxtaposed views over the edges of one another. The problem with these photographs are down to a light leak in the darkroom and began exposing my photographs before I got the paper into the

camera. The banding on the images is where I was measuring the paper up to cut up and wrap around the center container. This camera is the first prototype and is using photographic paper until all the problems have been ironed out. The next step to be taken is to move on from this camera and develop a rotational panoramic camera.

Experiment 4, all 6 pinholes used. Exposure time: 24seconds.

ISTD It Happened on this Day The day that I spent at the Imperial War Museum was extremely useful as I found quite a lot of information that related to the work I was wanting to produce. But more importantly I got a good insight into what the morale, conditions and thoughts were like at the time. I had initially felt rather bewildered, at the prospect of trying to convey the emotions that were invoked, while looking through all of the private papers at the Imperial War Museum in London. I then decided to try and tackle something a little less ambitious. I had underestimated the amount of time it would take to accumulate an adequate quantity of diary entries from one specific day of the year. This has forced me into changing what it was I had planned to do initially.

ISTD It Happened on this Day After visiting the Imperial War Museum in London and reading through all of the research material that day. I felt quite overwhelmed by the whole experience. The smells, textures, photographs, the documentation and its authenticity. Having watched Schindler’s List as part of the research, it was apparent that this film was also very emotive. So I decided to do a piece of work based on this film. I’ve tried to recreate a realistic feel by using type that was commonly found during the period the film was based. I’ve used Futura and an Antiqua font. I’ve found it difficult to find which typeface was used on a typical german typewriter from that era. But I have found that documentation which was typed up on a typewriter used a particular typeface called Fuhrer-type. This was used because Adolf Hitler had a vision impairment and it was easier for him to read as the lettering was taller than usual type. These typewriters also had a runic ‘SS’ symbol.

OSKAR SCHINDLER - 28/4/1908 - 9/10/1974 Oskar Schindler is responsible for the saving of approximately 1100 Jewish lives during the Holocaust. He arrived in Krakow in 1939 where he employed Jewish workers in his enamelware (Deutsche Emaillewaren-Fabrik) and ammunitions factories. There was no asolute, definitive list of all the prisoners that Schindler saved as such. But, several different lists that were made throughout different periods during the second world war. Oskar Schindler had an accountant called Isaac Stern who compiled the lists. ISTD It Happened on this Day The idea that I had to begin with was to take a global map from each year of World War 2 and mark out noncombatant, allies and axis occupied areas. For the areas marked out with allies I would use diaries that had been written by allied soldiers while occupying that area of the map, and gradually fill the map with these diary entries. The map should then be able to show the Nazi forces expanding across Europe and then collapse in on itself again come the end of the war. While at the same time giving first hand accounts of what was going on in those areas at the time of the war. I had a lot of difficulties in getting the type to stop fragmenting while still trying to retain the shape of the countries. I was restricted in the sense that I only had a limited amount of diary entries. Collecting these diary entries was extremely time consuming and I didn’t have much to show for my efforts. In total I spent 6 hours in the Imperial War Museum and a further 6 hours transcribing the diaries I had found with June 12th entries in. The whole process was extremely time consuming and I didn’t manage to gather that many entries. For example, some of the items I had requested didn’t have any entries for June 12th but I wouldn’t have realised this until I had very carefully and meticulously combed through all of the items in the container. I learnt that I should just use pre transcribed diary entries if I were to continue with this project in the direction I had originally intended. I think the scale and ambition of what I had initially set out to create was a little too large and too ambitious for one person to achieve during the time given for a 15 credit unit and how late in the semester the brief was received.

R.S. Raymond June 12th, 1942 Have seen a dozen or more plane crashes since joining this service but yesterday station had a very bad day when 3 crashed and burned. Eight airmen lost their lives. One undershot the flarepath on landing, one spun in form 1000 feet in the afternoon and at the same time another crashed because only one flap came down. Two escaped from the latter wreck but the pilot neglected to switch off one of his motors which fanned the flames and neutralized the efforts of the fire crew who tried to put it out. This station has therefore lost eight planes during the past two weeks. The first one I saw as Duty Pilot at Biscotes. It was a shaky overshoot that stalled and spun in from 50 feet. The plane broke in two, 3 were killed instantly and the rear gunner was flung out and escaped with only bruises. Two were lost on Ops. There were also two overshoots recently due to engine failures. A proportion of the accidents are due to the maintenance and age of the Wellingtons used for training ships here but some are caused by disobedience or lack of discipline in the air, and on our weekly parade this morning the subject was stressed and discipline on the ground will here after be rigidly enforced and tightened up. As I have to take leave I shall visit a friend at Wolverhampton – Ops pilots coming here have priority.

ISTD It Happened on this Day This image is a refined version of the first poster idea that I came up with. I’ve tried to incorporate the French flag colours and the order in which they appear into the main focal point. This focal point is the date that I chose to base the project around. The font is called Bifur and is from the French foundry ‘Deberny & Peignot’ created in 1929 by A. M. Cassandre.

R.S. Raymond Arrived at Montreux at 5:30A.M. The whole section evacuated the hospital D’Alem – best at Lagny, and drove all night starting Tues 8P.M. Left Louvecienne at 10A.M. yesterday morning with 13 men and 9 ambulances. Lieutenant Braxton scouted for us in the staff car thru Paris. The road into Paris was jammed with refugees on foot and in every conceivable vehicle; bicycles carried two plus several suitcases and little motorbikes carried 4 people saw plots of automobiles that had been smashed, travelling in the blackout the night before and abandoned. Engs & I were assigned to the same car, #63, & stopped the convoy once at Vincennes with motor troubles, which I discovered to be a loose connection on the distributor. Lagny at 2 oclock, parked the cars in a clump of trees with the others and met the other members of the section at the hospital for lunch. Met our officers at the cantonment afterward. Lieutenant Rank, middle aged & a very efficient executive. French army officer, Lord Moore, a young N.Yorker who has been here since January & is second Lieutenant with Braxton, who was with us at Louveciennes as First Lieu. Lieu. Ranks second Lieu is Maresela. There are two staff cars with our unit & a repair truck with several very efficient mechanics assigned to it. The best ones I have known in France thus far. Loaded the truck, at the hospital, with bedding, medical supplies & miscellaneous equipment and started at 8P.M. in convoy with about a hundred nurses, doctors & men, attendants also aboard. Stopped for a short rest (iokes?) it got dark. I rode with Bristol and was at first disappointed that I was not assigned to a car alone, but when we started on after this stop, discovered that driving on narrower roads in complete darkness is just plain hard nerve – wracking work & no fun at all. Later our second stop the boys complained sincerely that it was absolute hell trying to keep awake, and I drove for Tucker until we halted at the side of the road to sleep until dawn. Tucker is a 200lb ski instructor from Vermont. He had been driving with one hand & playing a flute with the other. Slept a bit in the cab and started on in the rain in the first dawn. The hospital at Montreux was formerly a big chateau & was already partially staffed & prepared for our arrival. Our trucks were unloaded in the courtyard whose roses as large as saucers bloomed in many colors. We stood around and learned the news from other members of our section, who have been hauling the blesses for several days. Freddy Fontenells has been driving since last September with no leave & looks like an Alaskan

sourdough fresh from the creeks, dog dirty & loaded for bear, a bearded 200-pounder. Others who have been assigned to our section, one Charles Wilkes, a French-American whose twin brother, Jilbert was with us at L (cant read it – too faded) Jimmie Allen, Ames, speaks French fluently, as do all the others who have been here a few months & something an air of bravado like a plume. Is a good egg. Darrell, English-American of essential air, 36 (too faint to see), 30 (too faint to see) Lee Price a contract bridge teacher, stocky with prematurely graying hair. Indefinite age. Parked our trucks under the trees. I washed and shaved & felt better. Everyone looks like the morning after the night before. We shall eat soon & move out. Our officers are considerate, but the work is all emergency & must be done. Our equipment is excellent, & with one or two exceptions all the boys are dependable drivers. The rain has stopped & our surroundings look different tho we have had little sleep. The base hospital at Lagny is farther from the fighting Front than at L. from which we came, as the Front is encircling Paris and the north- western ledge is feeling the pressure. Took a wash in the park – like forest surrounding this Chateau and found it delightful. Tall trees that the light could not penetrate & the ground covered with a creeping vine. Very damp & mossy in the cool depths with birds singing brightly while the French bombers soar by overhead. Each one keeps his gas mask & helmet at hand like one wears his pants. In the cab we carry musette bags which contains, Toilet articles, canteen, mess-kit, flashlight, & etc. Our equipment is checked carefully at each stop & gets first attention, men second. Incident: Convoy thru Paris – stations plazas crowded with refugees leaving city. The Ames flags on our trucks inspired them to clap their hands. A wave that rippled thru the crowd. Thrilling.

12 JUIN 1944 S. Demeza These first hand accounts of war are very insightful and give a detailed descriptions of what life was like on the front line. They also show us personal thoughts and feelings. The likes of which we dont often see in TV documentaries. These accounts are more powerful in a emotive sense due to their lack of mediation. These notes were written down in a diary at the time of the war. The credibility of these documents cannot be questioned. It is this credibility and reality that has really grabbed me, coupled with the photographs, orders, papers, notes and other mementos. The writings, visuals and smells as a wholesome experience is one that I feel is greater than the sum of all parts. It is something I feel I cannot completely convey with only typography. It is an experience that will differ from person to person, due to the personification triggered by the items.

ISTD It Happened on this Day I looked at propaganda posters from various countries to get a feel for the typefaces that were used during this period. I also looked at type foundries in Germany, France and England that were operating around this era to try and match fonts to the posters. Each poster contains a diary entry from June 12th 1944. The date is typed in the language of the country that the soldier was in, while he wrote the diary entry. As these diary entries were mostly transcribed by myself. There are certain areas that I either couldn’t see clear enough to work out, or just could not understand the handwriting. I feel as though this has had a negative effect on the outcome. As I’ve had to fill in the areas that I couldn’t work out with text in brackets describing why I couldn’t work it out. Along with the diaries there were; photographs of the individuals, aged documentation, top secret documents, pocket survival guides, letters to and from family members, drawings and many other mementos. The addition of discolouration, markings, smell and the vast degree of paper sizes, textures and thicknesses these documents came in, shape the experience. I feel as though this experience as a whole is greater than the sum of all parts. In an attempt to capture some of this experience. I’ve added my own personal emotive response to the diary entries, because I do not feel as though the sensation of having all of the personal items in front of you, can be conveyed with just type.

12 JUNI 1944 R.T. Greenwood More departures during last night. The T.P. looked fairly deserted this am. But “C” are still here. First contingent depart about 2.0am tomorrow. Self & others about 4:30am. Not much sleep tonight. Going to S. by rail. Did a little final stowing this morning, then ceased work for the day. Weather warm and sunny. Plenty of air activity. Had shower during afternoon. Cash running short. Most of the men are now “broke” – apart from Francs, which no one now wants to buy. But there has been a little more bartering. Managed to write another short note to Jess. Saw Dave L. this morning. He had just said good bye to his wife. I think it is a good job we are going in a few hours time. Much more of this inactivity will cause depression. Many of the tank crews proudly wearing new denims today…with various titles & slogans painted on the back. A good sign: the lads are very cheerful & in excellent spirits. Heard the 9 o’clock news. Beachhead now 60 miles. Americans about 15miles from Cherbourg. Still progressing. German retreat in Italy continuing. Russians have launched attack on Finland. Have no sympathy for the latter. They had their chance to get out of the war…. But I think this offensive is only the introduction to Russia’s Summer campaign. And now to bed: reveille 2:30am! Where will I be this time tomorrow? Have missed Jess’s letter today: but mustn’t moan. Have to get used to it…. Y.M.C.A. cinema this evening – saw “San Francisco”.

EP Reflection Looking at the projects I have done this year for External Positioning. I would say that, none of it has really excited me, got me thinking, ‘yes this is what I want to do for years to come’. The stamps brief bored me, the ISTD brief I found extremely difficult to work with regarding the tight time constraints, while balancing several other projects with varying weighted importance. The thing I enjoyed the most was coding my own website, based on what I have done so far, I find it hard to believe I will find a job / internship based on what I’ve done on it thus far though. I want to finish it soon but with the FMP coming up I’m thinking I may find it difficult to devote time to further development. I have really enjoyed the HTML/CSS workshops and found them very insightful to finding out industry trends such as adaptable websites via media queries. I’m not a fast worker. I think on things, explore different avenues, read up on areas that are vague to me just as much as I do to areas I think I know. This is how I prefer to do thorough research, both before and while I’m doing the work. It is definitely an area that I need to work on. I think that in becoming employable I must become quicker in producing work. I don’t know what area I want to work in. Which makes it difficult to determine which companies to look at. I know I would like to work in the U.S.A specifically along the west coast. I would like to do some prior internship’s around London; I just haven’t identified a specific area that I can commit to. I have a keen interest in hand made photography, which I have developed a lot in since the first year. I have made several successful working cameras with an aim to do more for my FMP. Whether or not this interest is enough to devote my life to, I am yet to decide. To conclude, I’m enjoying web development and experimental photography. I have a very good technical ability for drawing. But, as time is passing by I’m becoming more and more undecided on whether I have enough passion for these to make one of them a viable career choice.
