FREE No. 11 / > PUBLISHER’S NOTE My friends, welcome to FREE No. 11 – LIFE, our annual rededication to extracting the essence of life from every moment lived. As, we like to say, living “a life without limits.” As I pen this note, I’m headed cross-country on a red- eye flight to observe the life of a very dear and close friend of mine from college. This person was a stalwart in times of trouble and unease. He was one of those individuals that was always, and I mean ALWAYS, calm in the face of uncertainty. He was lost far too soon but in the time that he was here, he lived a kick-ass life!

LIFE 16 |

| www. freedmc.com

Is it me, or is there a strange sense of optimism in the air? Maybe it was watching the sun rise, as I made my way to the airport? Maybe it is thinking about my friend and the calm spirit that even as a young man, he perfected? Maybe it’s the cranberry juice and soft-baked apple bar the flight attendant just served me? But something has put me squarely in the most optimistic of moods. For it’s Springtime. The most optimistic of the seasons. The time when the world puts on its new bespoke suit, silk tie and loafers, and heads out to party! With this change comes a sense that we’re reaching a turning point in the universe, or at least in the country. Sure, we’re barreling toward financial uncertainty thanks to the wasteful, corrupt and criminal efforts of our current administration and the war-profiteers that they’ve empowered to act on their behalf. Sure, we’ve lost thousands of valiant lives who were our fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, sisters and brothers. Sure, patience and oil is in short supply and compassion it seems even less. But...and this is the interesting part... there is reason for hope, for optimism. Just take a look around. Watch the world as it rejuvenates, replenishes and resurrects, right on cue. Watch it as it fills itself with hope, optimism and life. We would be well served to take a lesson from our home and strive to do the same. With that in mind, I wish you health. I wish you happiness. I wish you life!

Switzerland, known the known around the world as for its precise timepieces, handcrafted chocolates, and cheese with holes in it, can now proudly add men’s skincare to that impressive lineup. TASK Essential, realizing the important place oxygen holds in the formula for healthy skin (and the voracity with which our skin cells consume it),

heartily enriches all of its products with pure oxygen molecules in liquid form. Standouts include Oxywater, a refreshing spray made up of oxygen and spring water to rehydrate and a gentle antiseptic to open the pores, Face Wash, an appropriately named, cleansing and detoxifying gel chock full of flavonic glycoside, an antioxidant extracted from gingko biloba leaves, and Stop Burning, a soothing after-shave balm with extracts of aloe vera to moisturize and witch hazel to minimize redness and nicks. The line, fully developed, manufactured, and packaged in Switzerland, is a simple, effective way to protect and enhance an organ that oftentimes isn’t attended to with much more than your girlfriend’s Noxzema. GRESSO AVANTGARDE ROYAL BLACK DIAMONDS ▼

If Vertu’s titanium-clad, Ferrari-branded, and ruby-encrusted cell phones aren’t nearly rich enough for your blood, we’ve got something that might do the trick. Gresso, a new-on-thescene manufacturer of somewhat mysterious Russian origin, brings to market the world’s first cell phone made out of wood. More specifically,

200-year old African blackwood, inset with 18-karat gold, backed by stainless steel, and encrusted with 23 black diamonds. Handmanufactured in a limited edition of 50, Gresso seemed to literally spare no expense with the Avantgarde Royal Black Diamonds; the sapphire crystal display, laser cut keyboard, and a body secured by screws made of even more 18 karat gold make that point abundantly clear. The €30,000 price tag (you do the conversion) should also clue you in. While the company also offers a version without nearly as many black diamonds (although four is still pretty damn good), if you’re gonna pop for a cell phone made of African blackwood, you might as well go all the way. www.gresso.com Avantgarde Royal Black Diamonds €30,000

NEOPORTE ▼

When’s the last time you gave thought to your front door? Might it be a safe bet to say never? Ponder it for a moment though; the entrance to your home is logically (and logistically) the focal point of your domain, an announcement of your domicile’s presence to the world. Does it not make sense then, to take care in choosing it with the same reverence you did with that 8,000 inch flat-screen, now used primarily as an outlet for SportsCenter? We humbly present Neoporte.

Built around seamless 16-gauge stainless steel panels and frames, commercial grade locksets, and a clean, contemporary ethos, these portals are as much about beauty as they are brawn. Real bambooinfused glass and simple window placement subtly complement the attention to detail of reinforced concealed hinges and automatic weather sealing. Available in single and double configurations, Neoporte offers 35 panel styles, 20 glass options, and over 25 levers and pulls; while the possibilities of creating a modern masterpiece seem limitless, the likelihood of the product being much more than a mere entryway is absolute. As they’re made of 100% stainless steel, they’re 100% recyclable, and endorsed by the US Green Building Council – although the usefulness of this fact is a little lost on us, as we can’t ever imagine replacing a Neoporte door with anything else. Oh, and for those of you who don’t yet own a house, not to worry, you will one day – it’s a great excuse to get a Neoporte door. www.neoporte.com from $5,900

VESTALIFE LADYBUG ▼

When it comes to your household’s aural environment, we know you’ve pretty much got it covered. Your receiver is high-end, your speakers are wireless, your subwoofer bothers the neighbors, and you’ve got the capability to play music from every source known to man. In the rush to turn your living room into an A/V showcase, we remind you of an oft-neglected space. A place where strength is gained to greet each day, where inspired thinking takes place, where sins are washed clean….your bathroom (what’d you think we were talking about, church?). Music is just as important

here as it is anywhere, and we like to think of Vestalife’s Ladybug as a perfect match for this highly important area. Its speaker ‘wings’ flip out to reveal the universal iPod dock (which charges while it plays), and a builtin subwoofer and digital amplifier provide rich sound controlled by a full function remote. Powered by AC or battery with an automatic shut-off, and accompanied by a carrying tote bag, the Ladybug was built to fly. While we’ll admit the Ladybug’s moniker is overly cutesy, don’t let it throw you off; it belies this sleekly designed contraption’s ability to fill tight spaces with robust sound. Plus, chicks dig it. www.vesta-life.com Vestalife Ladybug, $130

FISKER KARMA ▼

With nearly every major player in the worldwide automotive industry entering a horse (or at least some horsepower) in the hybrid race, 2008 may be remembered as the one that tipped the scales – a year that gave us the first real options when it came to environmentally-friendly, alternatively powered automobiles. So while we’re making predictions about future superlatives, here’s another: in this mad, green dash to the car of tomorrow, Fisker Automotive will be crowned king, and the

Karma, their flagship, will be queen. This curvaceous beast operates in one of two Q-Drive modes; the vaguely ominous sounding Stealth Drive, which allows for 50 miles of efficient, purely electric cruising, and Sport Mode, in which the 4-cylinder engine, responsible for its 0-60 time of 5.8 seconds and 125 mph top speed, is called to duty. The low center of gravity and balanced weight distribution are provided in part by the location of the lithium ion batteries smack in the middle of this beauty, and its full-length solar roof refuels the car while parked between full charges. Add to all this the full complement of luxury accoutrements that you’ve come to expect in a motorcoach – swanky interior, navigation and DVD system, Bluetooth – and the Karma finally

OCEAN 7 G-1 GMT ▼

A fine watch needs not tax your pockets to the tune of three months’ salary. So if upstart manufacturer Ocean 7 drives that point home with their entire line, the G series makes it crystalline. Swiss-made just like the big boys, the G-1 GMT is carved from brushed 316L stainless steel, with a unidirectional rotating bezel, screw down caseback and crown, and water resistance to 1,000 feet. The piece’s face doesn’t feature a whole lot of anything, and that’s why we like it. CARTIER PASHA SEATIMER ▼

While the Tank usually takes all of Cartier’s glory when it comes to wristwear, the esteemed French jeweler puts together a few other fine specimens as well. Case in point (pun intended), the Pasha Seatimer. From the looks of its black dial, black ceramic crown cover, and black rubber-covered steel bracelet, one might think this a somber affair. But fear not, for the stylized Arabic numerals and offset date window provide a fine

balance and meld with its darker features to present a sophisticated, understated instrument. If the Tank brings to mind, well, a tank, then the Pasha Seatimer is a vintage, chauffeur-driven limousine. How will you arrive?

generally have a place in the daily routine of a boardroom all-star (like yourself). TAG Heuer’s Aquaracer Calibre S may change that. Tweaking the chronograph’s formula of three difficultto-read dials (in use since 1822), the Aquaracer uses five bi-directional, electromechanical microengines to power a cleaner, more intuitive chronograph, all in a case stamped from a block of solid steel and water-resistant to 300 meters. > Vampire Weekend

> Hot Chip

> Erykah Badu

Someone crank up my Delorean because I am back in the 80s. Vampire Weekend is made up of four much hyped young men who came together when in Columbia and with the release of a few internet leaks became the buzz band. Their sound is similar to tunes recorded by greats like Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel in the aforementioned 80s. Theirs is a fusion of pop hooks with an Afro beat and lyrics that speak to their Ivy League background. Having said that, on many levels the disc works. Besides we have heard it all before. Standout songs like “Mansard Roof” (the first single) and “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” deliver the goods. The lyrics don’t so much pack a wallop as they do a wink of the eye but they’ll make you want to hear more. It’s breezy and light but ultimately it will become a regular in your mix.

Hot Chip greets us on their third full release with more keys, more synths, more pop, and more outrageous flights of fancy. It all comes together to make one of the best recordings of the year thus far. This is music for people who simply enjoy music for the hell of it. You’ll find they are a tighter unit than in their previous releases and have even one take live cuts of “Hold On” and “Out at the Pictures” which speaks to their musicianship. But just when all the various sounds are at a pitch Hot Chip takes it down with a couple of lighter ballads like “Made in the Dark” and “In the Privacy of Love”. Clearly, they are comfortable enough in their place to allow themselves the room to go in various directions without compromising the theme of creating tight, electro pop. Made in the Dark is a tour de force recording indeed and one shudders to think of the outcome had the lights been on.

She’s Baaacckkkk! With fist raised in the air and pick defiantly sticking out of her signature afro Miss Badu is taking no prisoners. Her newest disc in her words is all about the music. “The music is the star. I just laid down my vocals and let the music breathe while the melodies tell the stories”. This is a story seldom heard because there are few things on the airwaves that will sound like this album. The first single “Honey” is good but not great. Produced by 9th Wonder you’re left wanting more. Cuts like “Me” and “Soldier” are more in the signature Badu style mixing social commentary over melodic grooves that wash over you. Much of the music is designed to do as she says. The issue that we have is sometimes at the end of the ride there should be a destination. I think if given enough listens each person will determine that destination for themselves.

> Spy for Hire

> Duffy

When the first track “Luck” opens up you know this is not another hipster, moody band. This is straight ahead rock and roll and it’s been missed. This is not to say that Spy for Hire sounds like some retro band; just the opposite. Their tunes embody a freshness that is new because it sounds honest. When you listen to the plaintive chorus on “Things Used to be Good” the melody is infectious and binds the listener to the tune as one of the standouts on the EP. Just when you’ve settled in comes a thrashing romp like “Motorcycle” where you better strap yourself in and take the ride. Spy for Hire is one to watch and we’re awaiting the full length disc.

With the onslaught of British female singers that are dipped in soul and heartache i.e. Amy Winehouse & Lily Allen it would be easy to dismiss Duffy as being cut from the same cloth. She is a soul songbird that actually shares more in common with Joss Stone than the two aforementioned singers. The buzz has reached a fever pitch and every bit of it is justified. Songs like “Rockferry” and “Mercy” reach out and take hold and take you on a journey with the young singer. The production is stripped down and does not overpower the tracks instead letting Duffy’s voice shine through and become the main instrument. There is nostalgia to her sound without merely being a retread of earlier sounds. Instead Duffy finds honesty in her music that makes it unique in a time of retread cool. Old school soul with a decidedly unlikely face but perhaps that is all part of the charm.

● START / > STYLE GUIDE

Thom is Dead: Long Live Tom I don’t care what anyone says: Men look absurd in pants and jackets that are too short. Thom Browne won the coveted CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year award in 2006, largely because he somehow convinced a handful of hipsters to run around in highwaters. But guys, where’s the flood? Sure, Thom helped usher in the slimming down of the traditional boxy American suit by introducing (for better or for worse) a now-iconic cropped silhouette. But slim fitting is one story. Dressing like Huck Finn is a look best left for fiction. Surprisingly, Thom’s real success is the unlikely partnership he struck with Brooks Brothers, one of the original purveyors of the American sack suit. This meeting of extreme minds produced the lauded Black Fleece Collection, a much-needed addition to the underserved segment of the menswear market halfway between overly stylized heroin-chic designer suits (along the lines of Dior, Versace and D&G) and the classically oversized silhouettes pushed by old-school retailers like Hickey Freeman and Paul Stuart. Named DNR’s 2007 Collaboration of the Year, the collection merges Browne’s quirky modernity with the 190-year Brooks Brothers heritage. Though as Thom adapts his aesthetic to gain broader market appeal through Brooks Brothers, his own line

struggles to remain relevant as men realize that his clothes make them look, well, silly. Enter Tom Ford. This quintessentially elegant designer has quickly dethroned Browne as the tour de force in American menswear. After restoring Gucci to its former grandeur, breathing new life into the outmoded Italian label, Ford has set his eye on bringing refined sophistication back to menswear with an eponymous luxury brand. Recently named DNR’s 2007 Person of the Year, Ford is peddling superlux wares with a classic style reminiscent of Cary Grant or Fred Astaire, without being retro or old fashioned. His focus on beautiful quality, beautiful fabrics and beautiful cut emphasizes what renowned menswear expert and author Alan Fusser described as “permanent fashion.” Tom certainly isn’t going anywhere: After the successful debut of his lavish New York flagship, the designer has embarked on a bold global expansion that will bring Ford fever to cities from Moscow and Milan to Hong Kong and Dubai.

Ford, a former model, can sell sexy. Placing himself at the center of his ad campaigns, he is the epitome of the well-dressed man – and buying into his successful line of eyewear, fragrances and now shirts and suits gives real men (at least, those who can afford it) a little piece of his mojo. Tom’s clothes are designed to flatter, compliment and enhance the wearer. Thom Browne’s styling, on the other hand, draws attention away from the wearer, obscuring him behind a mess of exposed ankles and wrists. It’s an ill-fitting statement that lacks staying power in the mainstream. Thom may be a one-trick pony, but Tom is here to stay. Ford’s aspirational aesthetic has longevity and will broadly influence the entire menswear market in the coming seasons (stay tuned for copycats). Perhaps it’s a reflection of Ford’s approach to the world: Clothes may make the man, but I’m the center of attention. And isn’t that what we all really want? – MICHAEL MANTEGNA

Self Help books are a dime a dozen. True self reflection and thoughtfulness are priceless. The bestseller lists are filled with volumes of books that profess to tell you how to be a better person, use your time wiser, and be more fulfilled. Most of them end up being “noise and fury signifying nothing”. Keeping that in mind, we at FREE have identified some works that truly make it worth the while to find a moment to be still and reflect.

> PRACTICING THE POWER OF NOW – Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart Tolle is best known for his bestselling book The Power of Now. It has been translated into 32 languages and is one of the most influential spiritual books of recent time. Mr. Tolle expounds a philosophy of “Living in the Now” which is categorized by stripping away analytical constraints and preconceived notions of who we are. His follow up volume Practicing the Power of Now is a guide to taking action to realize the philosophy expounded in the first work. The book is filled with exercises and meditative processes designed to help you

28 |

reach a higher spiritual plane. Although it can come off as vague at times if given proper attention and time there are powerful lessons to be learned. Mr. Tolle takes an important next step in going beyond the written word and has designed a program that is very actionable in the real world. > Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book – Harvey Penick wITH Bud Shrake

who play it is an exercise in not only futility but in frustration. The Little Red Book takes you through basic steps on how to improve your golf game from swing, to putting and beyond. The depth however rises when those same lessons of taking 'ones time', repetition, and joy of improvement are transferred to 'ones life'. Bailey and Mr. Khul. This is dense reading and not for the faint of mind as they delve into such topics as The Ancient Mysteries, Karma, Serenity and The Physical Body. The chapters are very short but the questions raised are so thought provoking it can take hours just to get through one of them. Ponder On This is a serious work for serious minds that don’t necessarily need all the answers but don’t mind exploring the questions.

Most importantly it delves beyond food and makes a connection between what we eat and how we feel mentally and physically which is a dramatic difference in approach to most diet books which deal with how we look. All of this is neatly woven with aspects of religion, meditation, and potential environmental toxins. Conscious Eating is a must have for anyone interested in a balanced and healthier diet.

● START / > SPIRIT

> Thierry Henry It is human nature to want to get a sense of things. It is natural to want to explain the world around us. To seek answers to the unknown. The desire for completion coupled with the elusiveness of certain truths makes us discontent. But that discontent pushes us forward. Even if the goal is no closer, we yearn to find the answers. There are those among us who embody that yearning in everything we do. It is in their work, their accomplishments, it is their very spirit. They are FREE spirits and we salute them. Thierry Henry is not a household name. You may recognize him as “the guy that is not Tiger Woods and Roger Federov” in those Gillette ads. Despite that lack of recognition, Thierry Henry is a giant in his field. Clearly, there is more to “football”, as it is known throughout the world, than Pele and David Beckham. Those are the names are known Stateside, but internationally they are just the tip of the iceberg of a cadre of football superstars that rival the notoriety of any of our American stars. Few of those rise to the level of striker Thierry Henry. He has excelled on the stage of football for well over a decade, playing for the Arsenal, the French National team and currently FC Barcelona. He is renowned for his style and pace of play on the pitch and his courage and grace off of it. Though an international game, European fans of football have not always embraced the diverse make up of their teams. Henry has used his acclaim as one of the games biggest stars to draw attention to the racialized jeers and abuse that is often hurled at players of color. It is that courage, the desire to speak when so many would remain silent that shows how he personifies the FREE Spirit. It is easy to lead in times of comfort but ones spirit shines when tested with adversity. Breaking the mold of most superstar athletes, Henry chose to look beyond himself and attempt to right wrongs that plagued his sport. We celebrate excellence in all endeavors and there are few clearer examples than footballer Thierry Henry. www. freedmc.com |

o many bands get hyped as the next big thing. So and so sounds like this person or that person. You read enough about music and you begin to think there isn’t an original note to be sung or a chord to be played. Well, throw all of that out of the window. Jupiter One doesn’t sound like anyone else, they don’t look like anyone else, and they don’t play like anyone else. This band, comprised of K Isibashi (vocals, violin, guitar), Mocha (keyboards), Dave Heilman (drums) and Zac Colwell (guitar) are their own creation and they wouldn’t have it any other way. Jupiter One blends strong keyboard rhythms overlaid with guitars to create a sound that is rich in tone

and energy. The band has an ability to capture slight nuances of musicianship and use them to anchor incredibly catchy songs such as “Countdown” “Turn Up the Radio” and “Platform Moon”. Jupiter One is the type of group that takes you on a trip that is as far-reaching as their name suggests. This of course is such a popular question. Where does the name come from, anyway? Drummer Dave Heilman swears it’s neither a reference to Roland’s Jupiter line of synthesizers nor a tribute to sci-fi classic “Lost in Space.” The answer to that question might remain a mystery but the fact that Jupiter One is a band poised to make it big is more than obvious.

S

py For Hire hails from Columbus, SC and brings with them a sound that stands in stunning contrast to the overproduced radio ready singles that currently dominate the airwaves. Ryan Rulon and guitarist Andy Rich were the two charter members who started the band on a prayer and borrowed instruments. They were soon joined by Jared Meharg on drums and Ty Izumi on bass. Together these guys produce high-powered, guitar-charged tunes that not only differ from anything else being heard today

but even differ from song to song. “Motorcycle” from their EP Speak in Numbers elevates into a powerful chant like, a tribal anthem. “Things Used To Be Good” is a short melodic tune that is both sweet and melancholy. When asked about their songwriting and inspiration, lead singer Ryan Rulon goes on to say, “I hear the songs in melodies and then the appropriate words find their home into the song.” Find this band and listen to these songs and soon they’ll be filling up your home.

At Your Services

 ERIN DONNELLY

From light sabers to Lamborghinis, unique services are stepping up to provide the help you didn’t know you needed. Sure, it’s nice to have someone clean your house or do your laundry, but what about the things you really need help with—like dating, dressing, and fending off Imperial soldiers with a jumbo-sized glow stick? Look to these random services to make your life a little easier…and a bit more interesting. >> How To: Land a Lady WINGWOMEN If your boys aren’t living up to the wing man standard established by Goose in "Top Gun", switch gears and try a wing woman. Working on the premise that a man is more likely to meet a woman if he’s accompanied by a woman (thereby branding him as “safe”), this dating service provides female pals—not escorts, so don’t get any ideas—trained to reel in the ladies. Your role is to follow her lead, keep the drinks coming, and try to come across as a man

in demand—not “Will & Grace.” Wingwomen.com >> How To: Keep That Lady JACK CARDS Because you’d rather French-kiss Kathy Griffin than step foot inside a Hallmark store, this relationshipsaving site lets you pre-select the greeting cards you’ll need for, say, all eternity, then ships them to you as the date approaches. All you have to do is hand the card over to the lucky recipient as they gush appreciatively about your thoughtfulness—unless it’s that sappy Valentine’s Day card you forgot to cancel after finding your ex in flagrante delicto with your roommate. That one goes in the shredder. Jackcards.com >> How To: Pimp Your Ride GOTHAM DREAM CARS Your current clunker—insert “Sanford & Son” theme song here—doesn’t exactly inspire the sort of extravagant road trip you have in mind, and neither do the fleet of Volvos down at the local

A weekend jaunt in one of Gotham’s Bentleys, Aston Martins, Ferraris or Lamborghinis will run you about two to four grand, but that’s a small price to pay for the best vehicular experience since you and your high school girlfriend christened the family station wagon. Bonus: Each car comes equipped with a free GPS system and a customized musical playlist. Gothamdreamcars.com >> How To: Geek Out and Work Out NEW YORK JEDI Want to be one with ObiWan? The bottle is 100% recyclable, the label is made from 100% tree-free paper and the cork closure is environmentally friendly. “From ideation to creation to implementation we wanted to incorporate the entire green world.” Mr. Giarrante continues, “We feel we have created a real environmental value to our customers.”

Lotus Vodka

I

t is not often that being at the bar becomes a place for divine inspiration. In fact, most of the time the bar sets the stage for long mornings and fuzzy memories of the night before. Founder and CEO of Lotus Vodka Rob Bailey felt differently. His inspiration came from seeking a vodka product that would allow for one to enjoy the best of the night and not impede his next day at work. Consequently, White Lotus, the flagship brand for Lotus Vodka, was born. The concept of White Lotus draws its inspiration from the lotus flower as an ancient source of heavenly nectars, and strikes a desire for balance with the best ingredients vodka infusers could find. The good karma of White Lotus extends beyond the bottle, as a portion of the proceeds goes to various Bay Area charities and organizations that support the arts. Along the same lines, let us note that the label is printed directly on the bottle to save paper. The packaging used to ship uses recycled materials. From top to bottom, White Lotus represents a new breed in the premium vodka world, incredibly superior in taste and forward thinking in social and environmental outreach.

STILL LIFE: The work of photographer

Rinze Van Brufi The work of photographer Rinze van Brug is informed by many things, but mostly by life itself. Initially inspired by public street art, he subsequently employed this style in his early work while in Europe. Afterwards, he began to explore the way technology could influence his work to create an entirely original style. Most importantly, Van Brug’s work is colored by music. More specifically, the fusion of life, art and music. It’s at this nexus, that we find him. Life. Art. Music.

THE CONTEMPORARY MAN'S VERSION OF AESTHETICALLY PLEASING.  TREVOR DYE

 GERRY LERNER

Michael McHale The thirst for aesthetic value has elevated contemporary man from the conventional driving forces of possessions based upon power, status, and functionality. Of all the things we obtain, our homes are the most direct extension of ourselves. Fortunately, there is a burgeoning population of artists who create with the sensibilities of the sophisticated man in mind. Renowned sculptor Michael McHale is one such pioneering artist, aiming to bring elegance and simplicity into the male domain with his signature crystallized Chandeliers. The light fixture, composed of hand-crafted crystal sculptures, offer the unparalleled originality of a master artisan. Given the versatility of the sophisticated man, McHale creates pieces that defy the traditionally rigid function of a Chandelier. His

designs suit places you may not typically expect to find such luxurious fixtures, such as hanging above pool tables, banquet tables, and even in outdoor settings. One of the greatest attributes of his work, however, may be the social consciousness that goes into the creation. McHale uses repurposed and reclaimed materials whenever possible, giving these creations a hint of the qualities of found art. More importantly, the ecofriendly lighting sculptures are never mass-produced and emit low emissions. And as for the occasional bra hanging from a Michael McHale chandelier; well, no amount of sophistication will remove us from our primal urges. To explore the Michael McHale Gallery and find the perfect work of art for your home, visit MichaelMcHaleDesigns.com

Damjan Popovac Along with our appreciation for the visually appealing, functionality will always remain a draw for the affluent male. Damjan Popovac's Men's Room collection satisfies these desires with a perfect blending of form and function. Damjan insists that, “Men's Room is a collection of objects for the contemporary man. It opens the door to a man's higher position in the society of men and therefore increases his masculinity.” The innovation of the condom box serves as a prime example of Popovac's philosophy. No longer will such a valuable tool of birth control and disease prevention be banished to the nightstand drawer; in Damjan's Men's Room, the condom is displayed elegantly in a hand carved, cherry wood box. The lid is fitted with a circular hole used for opening the box, which subtly works to initiate thoughts of what is to come when you

reach for your trusted protection. The condom boxes come in two forms targeted at two specific subjects, the single man and the married man. Whether it's his sense of humor shining through or a saddening social commentary on the institute of marriage, the box designed for the married man offers 12 slots (one condom for each months of the year) while the single box has 7 slots (one condom for each day of the week). Each label comes on 18k gold plates to enhance the sense of luxury. Beyond bringing functional art into a man's home, Popovac also strives to break social stigmas as he describes each of his pieces – ranging from an ornate wooden sculpture that functions as a closet mannequin to his stylish cigar boxes – as jewelry for men. Bikram’s Torture Chamber

I

f you feel like you might pass out, that's normal, especially if you're new to the practice. Push through it,” instructs Santiago Solis of Bikram Yoga NYC.

It's my first attempt at any type of yoga. The mirrorlined studio space is set to ideal conditions, 105 degrees Fahrenheit with 40 percent humidity. My 2.6 million sweat glands discharge a perspiration flavored of everything harmful that's gone into my body in the past decade and my fingers prune from the coat of sweat. Mysterious popping

sounds come from joints I never knew existed, but I continue to contort my body in ways that border on cruelty. This is Bikram Yoga, and it feels amazing. After finishing my first 90-minute class, I could only muster languid movements toward the locker room. As I pass Santiago, he says, “See, this isn't some cupcake yoga. Come back tomorrow night. There will be a lot of really great energy in the evening class.” At that time, the thought of returning the following day seemed on par with Everest. But I came

F

or most beginners, the practice’s unvarying sequence of 26 postures (asanas) can be daunting. The anxiety of performing such a physical feat is often enough to dissuade people from trying Bikram. “People will find every excuse, when most of the time they are ideal candidates,” explains Jeremy Fairley, an Arizona-based Bikram instructor. A basic principle behind the practice is that you’re never too old, and it’s never too late. This sentiment has been echoed many times by the instructors I’ve spoken with, including Fairley, who says, “If you have arthritis, try Bikram. Nagging injuries, you’re perfect for Bikram.” In teaching over 300 classes, he has seen a wide range of body types enter the studio. “ It doesn’t matter where you’re coming from; I’ve seen everything from musclebound athletes to seventy-year-old women who couldn’t touch their toes.” He continues, “You’re adapting your body to Bikram, so everyone is essentially coming from the same point; learning the postures, exploring their limits, refining their focus.” The only goal when starting is to simply stay in the room for the entire class and push your personal limits. In Bikram, you're only competing against yourself, but let us hope that’s an intense rivalry. For those who still worry about being too out of shape to start practicing, consider famed opera singer Measha Brueggergosman, who lost 150 pounds after catching the Bikram bug. The benefits of Bikram read like the average American’s wish list: reduced stress levels, weight loss, rejuvenated body, focused mind, strengthened spine, improved circulation, increased balance

58 |

and coordination, and much more. The cumulative process enhanced by the heat’s ability to loosen muscles and joints to allow for deeper stretching‒returns the body to a state of balance and strength. Such characteristics are becoming dramatically deficient in our modern existence filled by hours spent in front of the computer or television set. The postures (asanas) that form the foundation of this cumulative process have been developed and passed down over thousands of years, however, the structural elements of the practice are a twentieth-century invention. The creator, Bikram Choudhury, is a Calcutta native and student of renowned guru Bishnu Ghosh. Choudhury brought the practice to the United States in 1974 and established Bikram’s Yoga College of India near Hollywood, California. He seems to be the ideal American guru, complete with charisma, luxury cars, expensive jewelry, and media controversy. In 2002, he filed to copyright “Bikram” much in the same way a musician would copyright a song. As a result, those who wish to teach Bikram must be certified through his Yoga College of India. With tuition set at upwards of $6,000 (not including LA’s cost of living), many argue that the outspoken yogi is capitalizing on something that should be considered public domain. Choudhury has mantained that he doesn’t claim to have invented the Asanas, only to have pieced them together in a particular manner guided by a specific dialogue. Fairley, who trained at Bikram’s Yoga College of India under Choudhury, supports his teacher’s desire to restrict the use of the name. “In a sense, he is creating a "McYoga." You get the same hamburger from McDonalds whether you are in New

York or LA; in the same sense, the title of Bikram should stand for a specific product, his product.” Bikram studios can now be found in most major US cities. As a result of the copyright, “hot” yoga has also emerged as a spin-off practice. When I spoke with an employee at Bikram NYC, he assured me that every instructor at the studio was certified through Bikram’s Yoga College of India. Initially, the idea of a yoga practice transformed into a product seemed alarming, especially with the founder’s extravagant demeanor in the media. Discovering the perks of a “McYoga" has since swayed my opinion. There is some comfort in knowing that, no matter where your travels take you, any studio dubbed Bikram will practice the same 26 postures, set to the same dialogue, in the same torturously hot room. It took two weeks of practice to complete my first Camel pose (arguably the most difficult pose of the series), but when I did, the sensation of personal victory was comparable with any of the successes I had as an athlete in my youth. Based on my experience, I would recommend Bikram Yoga to anyone willing. For those like myself, who find visits to the gym to be a chore, Bikram is an ideal alternative of physical transformation and mental stimulation. Recommendation: For readers in New York City, Bikram Yoga NYC offers a friendly staff and classes to fit any schedule at each of its four convenient Manhattan locations. Free is a Life Well Traveled F

ree asked me to write about my “Life Well Traveled” and my editors wanted anecdotes from my various travels about the way I’ve avoided the mainstream and neck ties, basically my life in particular, but as I think about it nothing jumps out as very interesting. I’ve been paid to perform (and paid others to perform in 50 states and 106 Countries), I’m not famous but have traveled with famous people, I’ve survived/prospered over 20 years in the music/movie/tv business with no piercing’s or tatt’s. In a blazer I look like a banker (if you don’t gaze down at my Chuck Taylor’s), I’m not married, have no kids (legitimate or otherwise), I’ve been arrested in double digits (BUT never convicted- shot once, stabbed twice). I can stay up for over 4 days straight (pharmaceutical assistance optional), I have a full head of hair, I have two real friends, (one of them is even a girl). I’ve made good money (lost and made it again), never working 9 to 5, and don’t live in my parent’s basement. I own a car, (which I didn’t pay for) and a house (which I did).

Fact is most of the roads I travel lead to a place where alcohol is served (most of it for free). So while raising a 12oz. barbell with a friend, I asked her what about me could possibly keep your attention for 700 words? “That hoodie you’re wearing… it’s your favorite. You got it from the Tribeca Film Festival for free,” she says. “Yep”, I say, “I got it in my swag bag when my

film premiered in 2002.” “How much did it cost to make your film, how much was your entrance fee…? Or was it waived because you know people? Besides, your film didn’t win,” she stated. “But it sold!” I replied. “My point exactly…” she says. “Thanks, I see your point.” MasterCard, “For everything else there is MasterCard” it’s brilliant! It associates self-satisfaction with a plastic card. Use our card and feel good about yourself. Free is good! Free is easy! Free is fun! Free is

The Internet has the expectation of free and it’s destroying traditional business models from advertising to content distribution costing billions, but people are making billions from it being free. The best things in life are free. Free drinks taste better. Free radio, free television. In fashion, free is better, but expensive is better than cheap. Artists perform for free, but get free promotion, which costs or is priceless (allowing them to raise their pay quotes) or they perform in the subway because no one pays to hear them play (But, I always pay their change cup). Too cynical for you, artists

perform for a better world so they feel better about themselves, which again is priceless. In advertising, free is a moneymaker. With film festivals free is just expected. You’re way cooler when you get free stuff! And what about your personal freedom? Our government doesn’t even hide the fact that they’re taking away our freedoms daily. What price are we paying, do we pay, and will we pay for that? Is healthcare free? On Wall Street, everyone knows nothing is free. Free is powerful! Free is complicated, worth fighting and even dying for! Free is always unpredictable. Free is the testament to the power of discontent. Free exists on a plane on its own as a resounding call to arms; a fraternal moment lived in peace and war. It’s for the brave, and we expect it as a right to life. In our world access is everything and what’s better than a free invitation into a luxury lifestyle? I invite you into one that is your own, your own life well traveled. Take notice that you read it here! This magazine is FREE, (Thanks to the publisher making a business deal so he can provide it to you FREE). Age of the

New

Gigolo As told to the author Francis Ariely

T

his is not where I expected to be when I first moved to NYC. Is that a regular refrain? I just started telling you my story and already I fear I am a cliché. That’s pretty funny. If there is one thing the past couple of years have not been is cliché. I’ve managed to make millions of dollars, travel the globe and date some of the wealthiest and most accomplished women I’ve come across. Maybe date is a strong word. We went on dates, we traveled together but it was hardly a “date” in the traditional sense. These women wanted my company for one principal thing: sex. I was with them in order to satisfy them sexually and make them feel good. And for that, I was rewarded handsomely. I know what you’re thinking. Bullshit. I can’t blame you. I would have thought the same thing if I didn’t live it myself. Until I fell into this world of power, privilege and money I wouldn’t have believed myself. The funny thing about it is I had my own money and didn’t long for more. I was working in Wealth Management and doing well. Ironically enough it was my day job that put me in a position to meet these women. Wait a minute am I getting ahead of myself? Let me start at the beginning.

64 |

| www. freedmc.com

M

y name is William (the subject has changed his name for this story) and I am from Dallas, Texas. That is not a remarkable part of the story which is not surprising because there is little that is remarkable about Dallas. It was always interesting to me how a place that is so large can feel so empty. Every moment I had was consumed with leaving it far behind and heading to an environment that was more me—NYC, LA, Miami…anyplace that was more free and open was going to be my home. When I got accepted to school in NYC my decision was an easy one. I packed my stuff and headed north with the resolve that I would make it and leave my mark on the city. No small feat but what the hell; what did I know? Moving to NYC was eye opening in a number of ways but the lasting impression to me was money and power was everywhere. Not that they spent money frivolously or were snobs. Just the opposite. They lived a carefree existence that could only come with money and privilege. They didn’t need to show me they had money it merely was a statement of fact as absolute as night

follows day. I admired them and I wanted to live that life to move in those circles. Once out of school I got a job at a major investment bank in wealth management. In my mind this was where I could rub elbows with the people I deemed worthy. I could stake my fortune on managing the money they had already amassed over time. I killed myself my first few years. I dug in blindly and stayed the course through inevitable market ups and downs. I made contacts and I made money. I was a star in my firm and I knew it. As my client list grew so did my confidence and so did my access. My nights were in the finest restaurants, black tie galas, and art openings. The liquor poured, inhibitions came down and soon I noticed a different sort of attention from the women I came in contact with. I was new to the crowd that much was evident but I also gained a reputation as a smart guy who could make people money. It was under this pretext that I came in contact with Geneva. She was in her 40’s and was an accomplished entrepreneur in her own right. When I was invited to meet her to discuss her

portfolio I didn’t think anything of it. We met for lunch and the atmosphere was light but still professional. It was only when I attempted to make the next appointment to talk about moving her assets that she let me know she wasn’t that interested in moving that quickly but was interested in a more personal relationship. I was flattered but tried to change the subject. This was new to me and I wasn’t sure how to react. Was it a test? Was I being set up? As if she could read my mind she assured me her intentions though not honorable were direct. Everything screamed I shouldn’t do it but of course I didn’t listen. I managed to not listen to myself for the rest of the afternoon into the evening with Geneva. It was exhilarating and passionate and I loved it. We parted ways and she promised to set up another appointment. Weeks later I received first class tickets to join her in Miami for the weekend. My path was clear in that moment and I haven’t looked back. Geneva ended up being a godsend to my business. She introduced me to her colleagues and friends and all the while showered me with gifts and whatever else I

might have needed. Off to Turks & Caico then it’s time to buy a new wardrobe. Opera tickets at the Metropolitan no problem. It was a whirlwind. Funny thing, like I said I made my own money. I might not have been able to afford everything we did but I could have afforded the majority of it. Looking back, I think it turned her on to take care of me. It empowered her in a way that she couldn’t express in a traditional male dominated business world. Hell, it turned me on as well. She had chosen to let me into her world and was willing to pay my price of admission. What could be better than that? Probably all the other women I met through her that wanted the same thing. The word had spread that I was reliable, discreet, smart and a good lay. In short those are the winning credentials for a new modern day gigolo. Geneva didn’t seem to care. We had an understanding and she was cool with it.

I was no different than any other of her service providers. She was happy to share me and I was happy to be shared. At no point was I offended or cheapened by the experience. Should I be? Maybe had I discussed it broadly among my friends and gotten their opinions and feedback but that never happened. I was discreet and I kept everything that was going on to myself – until now. I think I needed to share the story not to absolve some guilt. I feel none. Rather it puts a nice bow on the whole thing and lets all your readers know that you can never be too sure of what is bubbling under the surface. I couldn’t have imagined the things I would experience when I first moved here. I was young, eager and completely open to everything. Would I recommend the things I have done to another guy coming into the business? Of course not, I don’t talk about what I do and I don’t need the competition.

She had chosen to let me into her world and was willing to pay my price of admission. www. freedmc.com |

Busting Out ] 2008 is still young, but the writing is on the wall. It is going to be a breakout year for one Liza Lapira.

H

ow do you define a breakout year? You star in one of the biggest blockbusters of 2008 thus far, the J.J Abrams monster mashup Cloverfield. Next, you follow up with two more major films. Liza Lapira is poised to have a great year. No..scratch that…a breakout year indeed.

Liza is no stranger to hard work, and her resume reflects that. One of her best known roles is that of Oliver Pratt’s assistant in the critically acclaimed series HUFF. Showing her chops against the wily vet and being challenged with great material brought her the attention of Hollywood. Her upcoming projects include the film 21, where she stars opposite such notables

as Laurence Fishburne, Kate Bosworth & Kevin Spacey. This is followed by See You In September set for a fall release, and finally The Repossession Mambo with Jude Law & Forest Whitaker. Clearly this young talent knows how to pick a script and keeps really good company. You would think with a film schedule that is so robust, Liza would have little time left for anything else. Of course, that would be too easy. She juggles recurring roles on two of television’s most successful programs: CBS’s NCIS and NBC’s Law & Order: SVU. With all those acronyms it’s a wonder she can keep it all straight much less be so damn good at it. With talents and looks like this, all we can say is thank goodness for breakout years.

A

s the male lead in the CW breakout hit show Gossip Girls, Penn Badgley’s character Dan Humphrey provides much needed grounding for this show inspired by the popular book series about privileged teens living in NYC. Penn lets us know what it’s like to be a good guy on a show of bad girls, to be mobbed by screaming fans and all things that come with sweet success. FREE: What is it like being on a show like Gossip Girls? Penn: It’s a very interesting thing because if you look at the nationwide ratings it’s still not there. But it’s very much a viral phenomenon. Fans of the show are vocal and it’s spreading and becoming a more conscious thing. So I am really enjoying it… FREE: Well, you’ve been on shows like this before on the old WB.. Penn: I have definitely made the rounds of WB programs. So much so I resisted auditioning for the part of Dan. I just didn’t want to pigeonhole myself. Only when I learned more about the concept, the character and of course the chance to work with Josh Schwartz did I come around to it. Luckily everything worked out..I can safely say I have never been part of something like this…

FREE: Is it the mob of girls? Penn: That doesn’t hurt. But to be honest, it’s a weird thing when it happens. FREE: In what way? I think a lot of guys would want that?

When you’re confronted with 40 screaming teenage girls, it can get a little surreal. Penn: Well it’s a psychological thing. Do they want you or do they want this character you play. When you’re confronted with 40 screaming teenage girls, it can get a little surreal. I never thought I would be that guy and now here I am. It’s a little overwhelming. I got mobbed by all these girls while I was walking to the set..screaming and pulling for my clothes, hat, scarf, whatever… it was wild.

FREE: It’s all part of being in NYC. happens to me all the time Penn: There are some perks, believe me. I can definitely get a table now in most places in the city, so I am not complaining. The thrill of that is very cool but NYC is a place that still allows for a certain amount of anonymity, which I like. But most of the time, I don’t have to worry about if a certain girl is going to want to talk to me. That’s always good. FREE: What are some of your favorite places in the city? And who do you hang with? Penn: I can’t tell you that. It would be giving away my secrets. But to be serious, I have great friends here and the cast is also really cool. We support each other and that makes working on the show that much more pleasant and special. We’re like an extended family away from set. Even though I’ve lived for years on the West Coast, NYC definitely feels like home to me. FREE: Is there some of Dan in you? Penn: Dan is a great character to play. Dan is basically the eyes and ears of the real world within the context of the show. He lends a certain moral rudder to the goings on, which I think people are drawn to. A lot of my preparation comes through the writing itself, which is so strong, but I like to think to make it come alive, you have to have some of it exist within you. I like to think I give Dan the best qualities of myself. www. freedmc.com |

Madeline Zima did what few have been able to do, making the transition from child star to young starlet without becoming the subject of a True Hollywood Story. As Mia on Showtime’s Californication, she is nothing like the girl we used to know and secretly we can’t wait to find out more.  Philip L. McKenzie  KARLA TICAS

adeline Zima is prompt. That’s the first thing I noticed, and being a type-A person, believe me when I say I notice things like that. We were supposed to speak via phone at 3 p.m. eastern time and exactly at 3 p.m. the phone buzzed. The pictures you’re looking at had been shot weeks ago, so really the hard work was done. Madeline looked fine; photographer had done a great job. In short, everyone had a certain satisfaction with how the process went which means as the writer I was in danger of dealing with postphoto shoot letdown. If you don’t know what that is it’s very simple. Actors love to get their photo taken, they love to act but they rarely like to talk. This means I am always in danger of being blown off once the shots are in the can. Or I get the requisite 15 minute rushed conversation that doesn’t give me much to work with. So you can imagine my surprise when the buzz came exactly at 3 p.m. and it only got better from there. See, Madeline Zima has some stuff to say.

I have obsessed and have been the object of obsession.

M

adeline is warm and engaging. That is apparent within moments of launching into our conversation. What else is apparent is that she has done this before. Even though she is 23 years old, Madeline is a veteran of show business. She starred for six years on the sitcom The Nanny. Despite Fran Drescher’s voice the show was a hit and Madeline has worked ever since. Her current project; hit Showtime show Californication is where we get to see the woman who is an accomplished presence on the screen. That presence comes through as we chat and you know she is confident with where she is now. And you need that confidence when you’re making the transition from child star to mature actress. “A lot of it is perception,” she says. “People will have an image of you as a sitcom kid and they don’t want to take a chance. I have to make them allow me to expand with new roles that are exciting and unpredictable.” That in a nutshell would describe her character Mia from Californication. I don’t want to give it all away, in case you missed the shows’ first season. If you did, shame on you. Go out and get it on DVD. It has

amazing writing, powerful performances and Madeline is a must-see. Her character is an enchanting, smart, albeit misguided, Lolita who seduces the main character Hank, played by recent Golden Globe winner David Duchnovny. It’s easy to dismiss it as titillating, but that is where Madeline takes over and adds depth to her character. “Mia is a function of obsessive love. We have all had unrequited love in our lives and I pull from that. Mia is desperately seeking someone to love and you have all the elements. Mentor/protégé, older man… in short, she has a talent crush.” Having seen the show and also having viewed the shots from the photo shoot, I find it hard to believe that Madeline has ever been in a situation where her love was unrequited. So where does that knowledge come from? How do you pull that in to your performance? She is beautiful in a way that makes you want her and makes you want to be her friend. In others words she is sexy, cool….not the kind of woman you ignore if she likes you. She laughs when I mention that. “Everyone has been in that situation” she maintains. “I have obsessed and have been the object of obsession. What I have not personally experienced

)

I have pulled from my sisters, from friends. But in the end, you have to take a long look at the consequences that come from any action.” Consequences is a theme that comes up a lot. It is central to Mia’s evolution as a young woman coming to terms with her strength and power. It is a theme that is more and more important with a Hollywood that consumes its young stars in short order. Although the threat is always there in an industry driven to excess, you sense that Madeline is strong enough and grounded enough to avoid those traps. “You have to not get caught up in your own ego. We all have personal demons but if you keep yourself to a certain standard you’ll be okay and you can avoid the tabloids.” Doesn’t exactly sound like the words of someone who has grown up in front of the camera for the better part of a decade. But maybe that’s why she is special. Maybe it’s because she is thoughtful, maybe it’s because she is talented, maybe it’s because she is beautiful, maybe it’s all of the above. But in the end, like punctuality, it’s a rare thing and to be appreciated.

ne thing we were struck by in talking to Madeline is her love of music. Now many people say they love music but when favorite artist’s inquiries came into the picture she took the interview over. And let’s just say her taste in music was surprising, but in a really cool way. So we thought it would be fun to get some of Madeline’s top picks. Check them out and, most importantly, take a listen.
