Student Housing for 300 people
Umea University was established in 1965 and is the fifth oldest within Sweden’s present borders. It has circa 4 000 staff and 16 000 students while the overall population of Umea counts 80 000 people. University also has a lot of international students on different master programs, so one could assume that it influences on the city lifestyle. But due to the concentration of students in a neighbourhood called Alidhem, 6
which is remote from the city centre, the city itself is lacking of signs of student life. Cityscape of Umea reminds more of a garden city then an urban settlement, it is adjusted to cars rather then to public transport or pedestrians. The variety of social activities leaves much to be desired. In other words, the city is not well adapted for students. It is a proper place for elderly people who want quiet life but not for
young people with their passion for communication and active life. However, the city of Umea is going to be European capital of culture in 2014 and there is an intension to increase the population up to 200 000 people by 2050. At the moment, the city does not provide a proper environment for a cultural life as it is not really attractive for young and active people. Students could have played
an important role in the cultural life of the city, they could have represent it as a relevant part of population if they were integrated in it and not segregated so much by being placed in a remote district. It is an arguable issue, as one could find advantages in a case when students live in a campus close to the main university, attended by all necessary functions (healthcare, shopping, sport, etc.). It is also necessary to consider the Portfolio Denis Brezhnev
circumstances of the time when the decision about establishing the university was made: due to the contest between Umea and Sundsvall for the right to found a university all decisions were made very fast, so an empty plot on the outskirts of the city was taken for constructing student apartments as it was the easiest way. In 1987 it was decided to found an Art campus on the riverbank next to the city centre. denis.brezhnev@gmail.com
School of fine arts was open first, then in 1989 Umea Institute of design was established. In 2009 development of art campus continued: there was founded the school of architecture, then it was decided to move Bildmuseet from Gamlia to Art campus. Thus, Art campus can become a new public magnet and a source of cultural activity what is beneficial for the city, according to its desire to be a capitol of culture.
However, 600 students from Art campus, including international and exchange students, are living mostly in Alidhem and thus are not well integrated to the city life. Being a student by my own, I have experienced 2 years of life “outside of the city. This experience defined my choice of theme for a master thesis. My intention is to create living space (or simply student housing) for students from art campus (for
the relevant part of them) in the central part of the city and thus to set the mutual connection between students and the city. I believe that it will be beneficial for both. Students will be able to use the city, its space, public places (cafes, clubs, etc.) and simultaneously they can generate activities by themselves and involve citizens in them. It will rejuvenate the city of Umea.

Student Housing for 300 people
Physical Model 1 : 200
Urban Block Studies
This variant is based on idea of creating two enclosed courtyards, connected to each other on the ground floor. Both of them have an outer covered gallery. 8
In comparison with the previous model, this variant has more openings on the ground level and one big cut in the front part of the complex.
Three volumes on the backside and one on the frontside are emphasized by height. The whole complex is more open and less dense then the previous one.
The third volume on the backside is emphasized by height - it is transformed into the tower. Intermidiate public spaces are higher and wider. Portfolio Denis Brezhnev

Urban area development
Physical Model 1 : 50
Density comparison Scale 1:10 000 Chosen area (Umea)
Gamla Stan (Stockholm)
This urban scale project aimed to analyse a certain area in the city of Umea in terms of density. The whole group had been doing preliminary research and then every student took one urban qarter and started his/her own project, offering the way of densification and reaction on the context. Physical model of the area was done in scale 1:50 in order to provide peculiar feeling of being a giant in the city and thus encouraging the strong contact with the context of city fabric.

Prior to the main project, there was offered an exercise aiming at analysis of different degree of densification from 0 % to 100 % from the existing built-up area.
I took a cubic volume (15x15x15 meters) as a basic unit for filling the block called Harmod and tested different variants of spatial composition.
However, it was necessary to consider light conditions, view from the windows, spatial qualities of inner courtyards, etc.
denis.brezhnev@gmail.com
The exercise had a volumetric and abstract character. As a result of the exercise, the most appropriate percentage had to be chosen.

Focusing on a smaller scale, I decided to develop one unit from the block of rowhouses located in the central part of the block. The 4 storey rowhouse is designed for a single family consisted of parents and two children. Ground floor is occupied by a garage, large hallway and a closet, first floor is a common area for the whole family including double-height living room, fire place and dining room with a kitchen. Master bedroom and a study are placed on the second floor. Last floor is occupied by two childrens’ bedrooms. 14

Wooden bridge
Scale 1:1
There was a task to build a bridge out of timber with a minimal span of 5 meters, using only 35 x 50 x 2500 mm sticks and 6 mm dowels without using nails, screws or glue. All the joints were done geometrically. The aim of the workshop was to test the material qualities and to push its characteristics to the limit, allowing to build the structure with the least of material possible. Stadium
Scale 1:100
There was a task to design a sketch of stadium for 100 000 people and then to built its model. The aim of the workshop was to improve the intuitive understanding of the large span constructions’ work on the example of a certain building type. Big scale was chosen in order to test constructions’ stability. Tutors: Fritz King Made in collaboration with: Soledad Larrein Luis Lanfredi Duration: 1 week denis.brezhnev@gmail.com

Competition “House for the Star
Layout (80x60 cm; computer graphic)
Barack Obama became the first black president of America. We decided that this relevant historical event should be reflected in architecture of his new house. Contrast between the black rectangular box and the White house expresses the radical change that happened in the history of the state.

Facade
The main aim of this project was to rethink the inner space (usually staircases, access corridors, etc.) of the apartment building. I wanted to make that space relevant for inhabitants, make it not only pleasant and comfortable, but to transform it into peculiar space. As a result, a huge “barn appeared, consisted of an outer layer (flats, stairs) and an inner void with huge openings that bring light inside the house.

Project of the small public building
Layout (55x75 cm): hand drawing, aqua colour, chinise ink
Within the conceptual part of the project there was an idea to create a semi-open space conected to the landscape (gentle slope behind the pavilion) that would serve as a landmark and a public magnet. The shape of the inverted pyramid was chosen as a strong one. However, during the next stage of the project, main line changed towards the design, according to specific character of the exibition dedicated to the theme of dinosaurs from Jurassic era.

Single Family House
Layout (55x75 cm): hand drawing, aqua colour, chinise ink
The house consists of 4 volumes: a cube (the highest one) - main space of the house with a double-height living room, long gallery going through the house and connecting enrance with the private garden, long box with guest rooms and a big box with main rooms for the family. Composition of the house divides outdoor space into 3 yards: main garden facing harbour, yard in front of guest rooms and a front yard facing the road.

Compositional exercise
Physical model
Aim of this exercise was to learn how rhythm and meter works in architectural compositions. Simultaneously, this model was a sketch for a future project, concerned with studies of architectural order.

Drawing exercise + sketch project of public space
Layout (55x75 cm): pencil drawing
This project had 2 goals: firstly, it was a pencil drawing of architectural drawing, secondly, it was a project of an open public space (I decided to design an amphitheatre, according to the rhythm & meter model), based on the chosen type of order (in this case it was Doric). Metric row of columns in the sketch model transformed into a colonnade on the upper platform of the open theatre.
