THE CHALLENGE To design an apartment loft for a family that recently moved to Vancouver from Japan, hoping to create a place that reflects their cultural background.
To provide a home that embodies the Japanese way
of life through the essence of SHIBUI. This is achieved by creating architectural linkages that connect the interior to the exterior, consequently bridging the client with nature.

The design incorporates the same shape as a guitar. Organic lines and forms aim to convey a sense of movement and flow in the space. Using wood materials and biophilic elements, the design creates a feeling of comfort and warmth, echoing the friendly nature of a guitar.

The design emulates the duality of the cuisine with a play in contrast throughout the restaurant. The materials and finishes within the space offer smooth and rough textures, inviting the patrons’ sense of touch—an ensemble of natural materials that compliments one another, implementing unity and variety throughout the restaurant. The space renders a dark atmosphere to emphasize and display the cuisine’s vibrant colors, bringing it in the foreground of each table.

This project is to design a pediatric oncologist’s office aiming to answer the question, “How can we design a space that encourages children to visit the doctor?” without a thought of fear and anxiety. The Lighthearted Pediatric Oncology office strives to provide an interactive and playful space with a child-friendly color palette and biophilic elements to alleviate patients’ fear, anxiety, and stress. To address the current Global Pandemic, every entry and exit is provided automatic hand sanitizers to promote sanitizing. And a way to encourage children is to place the sanitizers within their reach, also providing adults their own at their level; this way, kids will be compelled to copy what the adult does. According to social studies, children imitate their parents, their older siblings, and those they can see on TV. They do it to learn and be the same as others and feel part of a social group. Additionally, play areas are enclosed with lines embedded on the floor, subconsciously directing the mind to stay within it.

WORLDS WITHIN BOOKS
DENISE DIVINO 16
The world building of writing and reading is allegorized by this project. The source of inspiration for this project came from a fictional novel that allows the reader to invent entire worlds and alter their realities. Examples include “Harry Potter” by J.K. Rowling and “The Chronicles of Narnia” by C.S. Lewis. Through the use of juxtaposition, I was able to construct the images using real-life objects and the creations of my imagination. They illustrate the immense creative possibilities of writing by imagining an infinite amount of worlds. Additionally, I created this surreal appearance by using two methods: dislocation and downscaling. This caused mythical creatures and real-world objects to be placed on top of the books and throughout the scene, and to appear as if they were climbing out of the books and into reality.
