Child Obesity

rt M o re S p o ty a n d Va r i e needed in S chools

declaration was initiated by the Government in 2012, whereby David Cameron promised to enforce a minimum of at least two hours of sport per week in all schools - this drastically, fell short. Such failure in health and fitness improvements, alongside other contributing factors, has made way for an alarming rise in childhood obesity.

A

With dated sports options to choose from, combined with sluggish symptoms triggered through addictive relationships with technology, children are struggling with pertaining to a balanced lifestyle, of which is reflected in the drastic, health statistics present today. Figures show, if trends continue as they are, the number of overweight or obese infants and young children globally, will increase from 42 million (the stats in 2013) to 70 million by 2025. Children in high schools particularly, are not receiving enough weekly exercise amongst other concerns. Secondary students who aren’t taking up P.E as their GCSE option, are being limited to a mere one hour of exercise per week, during school time. Additionally, shocking, gender issues are still present within certain high schools, whereby female students are not given the opportunity to partake in typically ‘male-orientated’ sports, such as

football, rugby and hockey - despite the inspirational successes of Britain’s women’s hockey team attaining gold in the Rio Olympics, 2016. Additional funding for secondary schools will be available in 2018 - yet only 25% will be able to opt in. Those who are selected, will receive a longer school day from September 2017, where a wider range of sports activities for pupils will be on offer - available after-school only. Similarly, a premium funding allowance is currently underway, that has its disadvantages. Focusing to improve primary schools - its aims are: to include extra P.E sessions and diversity in sport, to encourage sports teams to partake in intra-school competitions and to create additional after-school clubs for pupils to attend. Despite such positive intent, the specialised activities introduced, have only been exhibited in public schools - extra curriculum such as pigeonshooting, golf and archery, are noneexistent in most state schools residing in

less-affluent areas. Statistics show, that 40 percent of children in the country’s most deprived region were diagnosed as overweight or obese in 2016, compared to just 27 percent in more prosperous areas, suggesting how the implemented objectives are not supporting the majority of children. Moreover, the vague assumption that all children possess a similar fondness for sport and are of a similar ability, generalises all individuals. Not all pupils would feel comfortable contesting in pressurised intra-school competitions. Furthermore, after-school-clubs render as an inconvenience for some parents and are not an option for less-confident pupils, who would find the prospect of engaging in further sport after school, nightmarish. It is evident, that equal opportunities are not being administered throughout all schools. A sheer lack of options for the many, is hugely discouraging, as children do not feel motivated enough to engage in excluding, unfulfilling team-sports such as Netball and Rounders. Arguably a lack of variety and options available has provoked a plummet in children’s health and fitness and made way for a significant rise in worryingly high obesity levels.

Swap Gadgets for Novels to Improve General Wellbeing Out with Social Media Depiction and in with… Fiction! eing a parent during the summer holidays means that at one point you’ll encounter a period of very irritating background noise - your solitary bubble of tranquillity; ruptured, as persistent ringing devours your blissful five-minutes. And as you hurriedly chase, scrawled walls and elevating ruction, you discover - much to your dismay; (not really) bored children.

B

Whether they’re on a sugar-come-down or they simply have ‘nothing to do’, one must refrain from comforting with gadgets. Instead, clean them up, get them dressed (they’re definitely not already) and pop to the shops not for fidget spinners, but for books! Transcend your child from out of their technology-driven stupor with the power of literature. Reading can improve grammar and literacy skills, enhance brain function and influence your child’s overall sense of wellbeing, that may be suffering already, from spending too much time on you-know-what. In today’s generation “more British teenagers own a smartphone, than have a father living at home”. Such a harrowing stat, only depicts our current social media crazed epidemic, that we’re all residing in. Research suggests having such an obsessive relationship with technology causes “low moods and increases symptoms of depression.” Thus, children are now suffering with panic attacks, as anxiety amongst young people turns rife, reaching a shocking, 80-year high. Children and teenagers today, persistently post on likeability channels such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter undergoing isolation from the ‘real world’, unbeknownst to them. Deterring from social communication, the millennials neglect valuable life-skills, choosing to opt into narcissistic voyeurism - where symptoms of crippling self-doubt and low self-esteem are just a few of the repercussions.

Then there’s China, where children are worryingly, having problems distinguishing between what is ‘real-life’ and what is virtual - hours-on-end gaming, an actual diagnosis; Video-Game Addiction. Free your child from the Digital World with the power of a good book, featuring hidden metaphorical morals and appropriate themes to positively influence your child. Evidence depicts that reading is often used to destress; a method of constructive escapism, that doesn’t exude grogginess, headaches, brain-fog or inflict damaging withdrawal symptoms. Contrastingly, a riveting read increases vocabulary skills (of which develops confidence), creates a switched-on, imaginative mindset, boosts concentration levels and most importantly, just as Todd Par’s colourful children’s book proclaims, – “reading makes you feel good!” We’re all guilty at one point in our lives of handing a tablet over to our child, where perhaps we could have been more responsible. Electronic gadgets are inflicting a lot more damage on our children than what we think, so steer clear of excessive use and assist in creating a healthier, stimulated, child through the power of a good book.

Parent Review

IM Marsh

SPORT START HOLIDAY CAMPS JANE (MUM TO PHILLIP & ELLIE) For the past 5 years, the IM Marsh Sports Camps have been the perfect companion for my children in the school holidays, providing not only a convenient childcare solution, (drop off begins at 08:30 am and taking childcare vouchers)but also as a safe and challenging environment in which my children have been able to flourish. Both my son, aged 9, and my daughter, 7, have attended a number of camps, participating in a diverse range of sports from Football to Trampolining. They have never returned from each camp less than invigorated, having enjoyed hours of fun, laughter, but also, very importantly, exercise. The camps have proved a godsend for both child and parent. Both my partner and myself have always been impressed with the coaching staff at IM Marsh who always strive to get to know each and every child. I feel happy when arriving each morning that I am leaving them in safe and capable hands. The smiles on their faces when we collect them at the end of each day confirms this. My children have learnt new skills, made countless new friends, and have grown to look forward to each day on camp. They are also able to seek new challenges, ensuring they never get bored during the often lengthy school holidays. There are always new options being added to the sports available to ensure the camp never becomes repetitive, and many of the activities can be continued after school and at the weekend during term time. My son has gone on to represent Marshalls FC, the football club that was born from the camps, whilst my daughter began dancing at IM Marsh 3 years ago and continues to this day. Overall I have been most impressed with the range of activities, the superb facilities, and the enthusiasm and friendly nature of the coaching staff. I have no hesitation recommending them to any parent or carer who is faced with the prospect of keeping their child occupied during the school holidays. You, and your child, won’t be disappointed.

Feel at Ease on Holiday with your Baby - Tips from WaterBabies Baby swimming lessons are essential in the bonding-process between parent and baby and introduce key water-safety skills, whilst boosting confidence, improving co-ordination and enhancing general wellbeing. Be at complete ease on holiday, as you splash in the pool with an excitable water baby.

Whilst in the water, hold your baby upright. Keep lots of eye contact and provide gentle encouragement. Let your child kick their legs sit them on the side and gently re-enter them into the water. Take it slowly - let your baby dictate the pace and how long you spend in the water.

Before entering the swimming pool with your baby, it’s a good idea to phone in advance, to check the water temperature - 30° for a baby older than 12 weeks (or heavier than 12lbs), and above 32° if they’re younger or smaller.

Water Babies classes run across Liverpool and the next term starts in September call 01925 243643 or email readydive@waterbabies.co.uk for more information.

Chat with Emma Bunton

amily Go Live speak to the one and only, Emma Bunton to learn how Baby Spice has become the face of a fantastic new skincare and biodegradable nappy range; Kit & Kin.

F

SO EMMA, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE BIODEGRADABLE NAPPIES AND SKINCARE PRODUCTS TO DEVELOP AND SELL? “I’ve always wanted to launch a brand of my own, a brand I could feel really passionate about and most importantly, one that was committed to its customers and responsible in its offering. The idea to develop a baby and family brand came from my own experiences as a parent and those of close friends and family. Like all parents, my family is the most important thing to me and looking after them is my number one priority. We’ve all been there, out shopping and stood in the supermarket or a pharmacy getting stressed out, overwhelmed and even mentally exhausted trying to decipher the labels on numerous products. Which one is the best? Will it do what I need it to? I don’t want it to contain all these unnecessary ingredients/ chemicals! As parents, we just want to give our children and family the best, but does the best

familygolive.com

need to be complicated, over-priced or unattainable? We don’t think it does. We developed Kit & Kin to provide families with a simple solution: a range of safe, effective, affordable products that are made with natural, sustainable ingredients and materials that are healthy for you and better for the environment. These are real products for real families. They look great too! Kit & Kin is a brand dedicated to caring and protecting your family’s needs as they grow.”

WHAT ARE YOUR AMBITIONS FOR THE KIT & KIN LAUNCH? “With Kit & Kin, it was so important for me to show people that even if you just make a little change by using our natural products or using our ecofriendly nappies, you can make a huge difference. That’s what has been so fulfilling about this venture – helping make parent’s lives that little bit easier! As a mum, I’m so busy myself, and I know how important that is.” HOW EASY DID YOU FIND ADJUSTING TO MOTHERHOOD - IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT’S THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF BEING A PARENT? “Having a baby is just the most magical moment, and then suddenly the responsibility of being a parent hits you. It’s hard not to feel worry or panic trying to adjust to motherhood, but it’s

just about embracing it and doing what feels right to you. As a mum your natural instinct is always best.” HOW DO YOU MANAGE JUGGLING A BUSY WORK LIFE WHILST BEING A MUMMY? “I am very lucky because I live close to my family, and my mum has always been on hand to look after the kids when I might need help. My other job at Heart FM is great because although I am up and out of the house so early every day, I’m finished by early afternoon, and I’m always able to be home in time to pick up the boys and spend the evenings with them, eating dinner & doing homework, and to put them to bed at night.” ARE YOU LOOKING TO EXTEND YOUR BABY CARE COLLECTION? “We would love to expand the range and there will be more to come such as extension to the skincare range as well as swaddles and organic clothing, but we don’t want to release anything unless we know it’s the best product on the market- for baby and the environment.” AND LASTLY EMMA, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER LIKEMINDED MUMS WHO ARE WANTING TO START-UP THEIR OWN BUSINESS? “That’s the greatest piece of advice I can give really – just always stay true to yourself in everything you do.”

Liverpool Food & Drink Festival celebrate their 10th Anniversary and its Bigger & Better!

his September will see Liverpool Food and Drink Festival celebrate their 10th year anniversary and we couldn’t be more excited!! Once again the festival will be transforming Sefton Park into a ‘food heaven’, bringing together the most talented celebrity chefs and local producers to serve up a giant feast for visitors on the 16th and 17th. Make no exception, this year the festival are going bigger and better with a VERY exciting announcement coming up for a special dinner and music night the eve before the festival. Keep up to date on their social media pages to be the first to hear!

T

Liverpool Food and Drink Festival has always prided itself on providing a festival the whole family can explore and enjoy, and with 8 different zones you won’t be disappointed. Whilst Dad is off pretending to scope out the mouth watering food options in the street food zone but sneaking off into our craft beer tent to sample some of the North West’s finest breweries, there is plenty for Mum to keep the kids entertained in the Kids Village. Ginger Island are back by popular demand with face painting, biscuit decorating is on the agenda at the Water Babies stand and if you really want to score brownie points with your kids Walking Pet Balloons is a must visit. The fun doesn’t stop there though as there is a great line-up of educational activity from Lancashire Wildlife Trust who will be engaging the kids in wildlife and outdoor

familygolive.com

activity whilst the RSPB will be teaching them how to make recycled bird feeders and other animal crafts! For those that want to experience a dining concept like no other on Saturday 16th September Liverpool Food and Drink Festival have come up with an exciting opportunity to be part of an exclusive Culinary Feast hosted by TV celebrity chef Simon Rimmer! The Wirral Born and TV presenter of channel 4’s Sunday Brunch will be hosting three exclusive sessions throughout the day of which a limited number of guests will get the chance to see Aiden Byrne of Manchester House, Paul Askew of the Art School or Nisha Katona of Mowgli demonstrate three of their favourite dishes one of which guests will then be able to stay and eat! The ‘demo and dine’ concept, is a brand new and innovative offering at the festival but if you want to be part of this exclusive event we suggest grabbing your tickets quick as there are only a very limited amount left! So the kids are happy with their pick and mix, Dad’s stocked up on cider and pies from the producers market and Mum’s been relaxing and watching

the coffee masterclasses in the newly created Coffee Hub area. What’s left we hear you cry?? Pop over to the Festival Sponsors Land Rover and take in their range rover spectacle or grab a seat in the demo theatre and find out how to mix up the best summer cocktail or cook up a storm from one Liverpool’s favourite restaurants. If you like a glass of prosecco then look no further than the prosecco tent or if you’re a gin lover (like us) then you need to head over to the festival’s spirit zone where they have a dedicated gin market and secret stall, shhhh. To end the day we recommend a wander round some of the city’s best restaurants, the likes of Sapporo, Alma De Cuba, Almost Famous and Reds True Barbecue will be supplying lots of tasty treats and then you can go and burn it off dancing and singing along in the atmospheric entertainment tent! But there’s one secret the festival are keeping close to their chests for now and that’s Sunday’s celebrity chef line up! We are on the edge of our seats here! Hurry up September!

Restaurant Review

Cucina di Vincenzo From the outside, Cucina Di Vincenzo depicts glimpses of Italian styling that is tastefully exerted and in no way bombarding – refraining from overlyused Italian clichés that allude to pizza & white checked table cloths. Instead, featuring a traditional awning feature and outdoor European-esque seating, Cucina Di Vincenzo gently beckons you in, as you venture inside and let the food be your lens. Met with a homely gentle interior, you enter an ambient, family-affair and receive a warm reception from Vince; owner and immensely-passionate restaurateur. Such an exuberant persona, met equally with the passion & attentiveness from the staff is infectious, and a rarity to experience in most busy restaurants, which this definitely is. For a Wednesday evening, Cucina Di Vincenzo was extremely popular and yet still, Vince greeted everyone with the same integrity and personal acknowledgement – several customers he knew on a first-term basis, exemplifying how many regulars love to return. And who could blame them? The menu is delectable; an array of high-quality meats, pasta, and fish dishes chosen to sophisticatedly reflect Italian cuisine; their Beef Ragu, a recipe originating from Vince’s family, passed down through generations, and a classic fried fish starter, ‘Fritto Misto’, consisting of crispy fried baby squid, red Sicilian prawns and salmon. And if you’re judging from the menu, you’d assume that the restaurant is a suited & booted occasion? Not at

all - their ethos being to focus on a warming, family-friendly experience – no pretentiousness, simply, good-food, served with Italian hospitality. Dining with my partner, I began with the Arancini rice balls, which were simply, the best I’ve ever tasted. Golden brown in colour and baked to perfection, the starter was filled with rice & mozzarellaa heavenly, rice croquette, proven to be a popular choice, as we noticed many other tables enjoying them too. My partner opted for the Bruschetta Calabrese – a flavoursome appetiser, infused with spicy salami & topped with buffalo cheese. Our main selections similarly did not disappoint - opting for the 10oz prime Angus ribeye steak, ft garlic butter sauce, asparagus & savoury rosemary potatoes & the homemade ravioli

burratina with fresh tomato & basil both were equally as delightful and cooked to the highest standard - we hungrily sampled each other’s. We washed down our main with a glass of white, a tipple of Falanghina, that complimented beautifully. A medium/ dry wine, the cult-classic, left a fruity, refreshing lasting impression. Dessert? Would have been rude not to, after laying eyes on the chocolate torte; fluffy dreaminess, served with drizzles of raspberry coulis and a dollop of cream - simply sublime.

irthday parties can be extremely stressful, so why not take it outdoors? With a little sunshine and fizz, planning and tanning, you can guarantee a smash-hit celebration for your child. And if the glorious British weather doesn’t persuade you to host outside, there are a multitude of advantages that may help sway your decision… Celebrating outdoors lowers cost, provides fresh air and space for kids to play and ensures zero house destruction (we’re always thinking of your interior décor). Additionally, you’ll prevent extraneous stress factors such as securing a venue, limiting invitees & costly food-cateringbills. Best of all, you’ll avoid a whole day of ducking & diving between large red cylinders, chasing after little monsters!

B

Birthday

It’s the small things in life, that we hold onto – precious occasions that implant in our memories and last a lifetime. So, when birthdays are whizzing by as fast as they do, cherish your little one’s big day and create a momentous occasion for the whole family to enjoy. Here are a few outdoor décor essentials to help you out along the way – our picks will effectively transform any mundane grass area, creating a customised, original party experience not just for your child to enjoy, but for the adults too! SLEEPOVERS UNDER CANVAS Utilise your garden space with a flowing, rustic bell-tent, that brings the indoors, outdoors. Hire a magical den for your children to explore, adventure and even have a sleepover in! A boutique, outdoorshelter brings a whole new dimension to your garden, creating a decorative area for your little ones to revel in, acting as a cooling-off retreat, during a hot, summer day, and an ambient, glittering interior for party games. And if the kids decide to go indoors later on, the adults too can enjoy the perks during the evening – parents and relatives can use the space to wind down, as the day draws to a close, and with card games, fairy lights and bunting, adults can relax in a tranquil setting enjoying blissful adult time, after a successful party.

THE PARTY BUS IS COMING! Instead of going somewhere and having to share a bouncy castle with other children at a soft play area, why not bring the inflatable castle to your garden, for the ultimate surprise for your little one? Enjoy the luxury of not having to move from out of your sunny garden, whilst watching your child enjoy a blow-up adventure zone with their friends. And if you want the full package, why not hire a party bus to pick up your child’s friends first, before they join in on the bouncy fun? A portable soft play bus could collect all of the little invitees, where they would enjoy an hour of soft play whilst on board, packed with party games, delicious treats and party bags - after that, it’s back to the house for some more jumping even a barbecue!

Planning & Tanning Celebrate Outdoors this Summer

PICK & MIX & WHIMSICAL FACE PAINTING If you don’t want to go too extravagant, but you want party vibes outdoors, then novelty machines loaded with sweet treats are guaranteed to send the children into an excitable hysteria - slush machines, candy floss, popcorn makers, sweet trollies - they’re affordable, ideal for party bags and provide hours of endless sugar frenzy for the kids, that’ll have them running wild, tuckering themselves out quicker than you can say wineo-clock. And to occupy the children as they’re demolishing their pick & mix, why not hire a face painter? Candy and comical illustrations drawn onto your little one’s face - makes for a fantastic birthday and photo album, filled with magic & memories!
