Graduates are listed alphabetically under the degree they are receiving, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Arts. Each graduate’s major and hometown are indicated. Titles of yearlong Senior Theses or Senior Creative Projects judged to merit recognition appear in italics, along with the name of the faculty supervisor.
President’s Medalists wear gold medals awarded in recognition of their status. Students graduating summa cum laude, magna cum laude, and cum laude Latin honors wear gold, silver, and red tassels respectively on their caps.
The hoods and robes of academic regalia signal the wearer’s academic journey. The hood is lined with the colors of the university conferring the degree; the border in which it is edged indicates the scholar’s field. The colors seen in Denison’s procession and the fields they represent are: Dark Blue: Philosophy; White: Humanities; Golden Yellow: Science; Light Blue: Education; Brown: Fine Arts; Pink: Music; Silver Gray: Oratory (Speech); Scarlet: Theology; Lemon Yellow: Library Science; Sage Green: Physical Education; Drab: Commerce, Accountancy, Business.
Today’s processionals are selections chosen from The Water Music (1717), and Music for the Royal Fireworks (1749) by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), and Sinfonia in D (1780) by Joseph Bologne (1745-1799). The recessional is a selection from String Quartet No. 7, K. 160 (1773) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Fanfare for the Class of 2024 is an original composition by Professor of Music Ching-chu Hu, B.A., M.A., M.F.A., D.M.A.
Musical selections are being performed by: Sophia Hwang ’25, violin; Sara Jarecke ’25, violin; Donald Keough ’27, violin; Jim Van Reeth, violin; Emily Yunk ’26, violin; Patricia Klosterman ’25, viola; Alex VanLaven ’26, cello; Daniel Ziabicki ’26, cello; Eli Lishack ’26, trumpet; Colin Nguyen ’27, trumpet; Tiffany Damicone, french horn; Doug Moran, trombone; and Bradley Krak, tuba. The commencement orchestra is conducted by Assistant Professor of Music Philip Rudd, B.M.E., M.M., D.M.A.
Flowers for the program are provided by Village Flower Basket. The program concludes when the platform party and faculty have recessed. The audience and graduates are asked to remain seated during the recessional.
Academic Regalia
The academic costume which makes the Commencement procession so colorful is more than 800 years old, dating back to the days when students were members of the minor clergy and wore monkish gowns and hoods. Today, the hood is used only as an ornament. It is lined with the colors of the university conferring the degree: the border in which it is edged indicates the scholar’s field. The colors seen in today’s Denison procession and the fields they represent are: Dark Blue: Philosophy; White: Humanities; Golden Yellow: Science; Light Blue: Education; Brown: Fine Arts; Pink: Music; Silver Gray: Oratory (Speech); Scarlet: Theology; Lemon Yellow: Library Science; Sage Green: Physical Education; Drab: Commerce, Accountancy, Business.

Garrett Jacobsen’s pursuit of the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece and Rome began in childhood. Growing up in New Jersey, he was an avid reader of mythology. Then, he chose to study Latin as a foreign language in high school, which led to a scholarship for Latin students interested in studying ancient Greek at Franklin & Marshall College. For Dr. Jacobsen, this first experience with the liberal arts through his own college experience became a lifelong study of the language, culture, and history of the ancient Greeks and Romans.
Encouraged by his classical studies professors at the undergraduate level to continue his work with graduate study, Jacobsen then went on to receive master’s and doctoral degrees in classics from Ohio State University. While finishing his dissertation, “Waking Visions in Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Lucan’s Bellum Civile,” Jacobsen was recommended by OSU’s chair of classics at the time to fill in for a professor on leave in Denison’s Department of History. A six-week contract, originally intended to complete a course on Roman history, marked the start of a 42-year career at Denison.
As a graduate of a liberal arts school, Jacobsen found Denison’s environment and offerings immediately appealing.
He recalls the emphasis on teaching, service to the college, and scholarship as key factors in his decision to join the institution. He first taught Latin part-time and later successfully developed a Classical Studies program, which received strong support from the administration and faculty. Today, the program is soon to be renamed Ancient Greek and Roman Studies and includes four tenure lines and two parttime faculty.
Across his time at Denison, Jacobsen recalls with gratitude serving on many committees and being named chair of the faculty, as well as holding the position of assistant director of the Honors Program, through which he had the privilege of working with Tony Lisska and Cookie Sunkle.
As a scholar of Roman poetry, specifically the work and reception of the poet Ovid, Jacobsen’s most recent work includes an essay in the book Ted Hughes and the Classics, published last year by Oxford University Press, as well as an article on Ovid’s influence on contemporary Irish poet Ciaran Carson published in the journal Classical Outlook.
In retirement, Jacobsen looks forward to spending more time at home, getting out the easel and palette to do some painting, and traveling with his wife, Ann Marie McIntyre.
Toni C. King, B.A., M.A., Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of Black Studies and Women’s & Gender StudiesToni King received her B.A. in psychology from Oklahoma State University, followed by her M.A. in guidance and counseling from Ohio State University and her doctorate in organizational behavior from Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management. In launching her career, Dr. King was co-recipient of a Rockefeller Foundation Research Award: Changing Gender Roles in Post-Industrial Society (1989-1990) “Life Journeys of Women in Corporations” and co-recipient of a Ford Foundation Research Award (1990-1992). Her work over the ensuing decades has examined gender, race, and diversities of identity as they relate to leadership in organizations. Central to her scholarly focus is women’s leadership development, diversity, and anti-racism in higher education, as well as academics of color in higher education. She uses workshops, seminars, and, more recently, innovative modes such as performance ritual and organizational play to design spaces for all organizational members that help them thrive, build community, and work to build socially just organizational policies and structures. King’s published works have appeared in such venues as The National Women’s Studies Association Journal and the Journal of Women and Therapy. Her widely anthologized scholarship includes a co-edited book, Black Womanist Leadership: Tracing the Motherline, published by SUNY Press in 2011. Since coming to Denison in 1997, King’s contributions to the university have been both broad and deep. She served
intermittently as director of the Center for Black Studies and was the recipient of two top faculty honors during her time at Denison: the Richard Lucier Endowed Chair and the Charles and Nancy Brickman Distinguished Leadership Award. Across campus, King was a founding member of the Faculty of Color/International Faculty group in 2008, served as associate provost for faculty diversity from 2009 to 2014, and was a cochair of the Black Caucus for many years.
As a faculty member, King contributed several new courses to Denison’s curriculum, including the first required qualitative research methods course for the Women’s & Gender Studies major: Cultural and Social Research Methods. With a joint appointment in Women’s & Gender Studies and Black Studies, she also taught introductory courses in Black Studies and in Women’s & Gender Studies, as well as a course in her area of specialization: Black Women and Organizational Leadership. She enjoyed serving as an advisor to many student groups over the years, including Denison Feminists and the Black Student Union.
Dr. King is the longest-serving African American woman at Denison. Her mentorship reach spans national and international borders, as well as the public and private sectors. She is a member of the National Council for Black Studies, The National Women’s Studies Association, The American Studies Association, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Peter Pauzé has brought a rich understanding of theatre to the courses he has taught, the productions he’s been involved with, and the students he has mentored at Denison since 1994. Though Professor Pauzé always had a sense he would be a teacher, the subject of his own undergraduate study was a continued exploration. A growing awareness that his artistic endeavors were consistently theatre-oriented eventually led to a graduate degree in dramatic writing.
After completing his Master of Fine Arts at the University of Georgia, Pauzé’s career at Denison began after several years teaching at Georgia College. Though he hadn’t heard of the school before applying, he recalls Denison being exactly the sort of institution where he would be interested in teaching, a belief that was solidified by visiting campus for his initial interview and sustained for the 30 years that followed.
As an associate professor of theatre with nearly 100 theatre productions to his credit at Denison, Pauzé has spent many years both teaching and supervising students in the creation of scenery and lighting for Department of Theatre
productions. Additionally, he taught a wide variety of classes and workshops across the theatre and music theatre programs, helping students explore everything from scenic and lighting design to playwriting and musical theatre development to theatrical theory.
Pauzé has written several original plays that have been produced at various regional and educational theaters, including some Denison productions. In addition, he’s designed scenery for many regional theaters in Central Ohio. He also is a member of the United States Institute for Theater Technology and the Association for Theatre in Higher Education.
Now, upon completing his teaching career, Pauzé anticipates he will miss both the onstage teaching and traditional classroom instruction, where he’s enjoyed seeing the pilot light of intrigued comprehension come on in his students’ eyes when encountering a new idea or a new way of looking at the world. In retirement, he’s eager to embrace the freedom of time in his own hands.
Sandra R. Runzo, B.A., M.A., Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of EnglishSince 1986, Sandy Runzo has enjoyed teaching a variety of courses in American literature, women’s and gender studies, queer studies, and writing at Denison. Though her curriculum has largely focused on American literature, in the summer of 2012, she was delighted to have the opportunity to teach a course in Wonderlands: British Fantasy Fiction with the Advanced Studies in England program in Bath. Dr. Runzo is grateful to have had many opportunities to both welcome celebrated authors into her classroom and step out of the classroom with students to see theatrical productions in Columbus — and in London.
Reared in Pittsburgh, Runzo attended West Virginia University as an undergraduate, then earned her master’s and doctoral degrees at Indiana University, Bloomington. At Indiana, she studied with renowned scholar Susan Gubar, who inspired her exploration of women’s literary history.
In her scholarly work, the poetry of Emily Dickinson emerged as an increasingly prominent source of wonderment, becoming the focus of numerous articles and presentations. Runzo’s book, “Theatricals of Day”: Emily Dickinson and Nineteenth-Century American Popular Culture, was published by the University of Massachusetts Press in 2019. She also has published essays on American women poets in American Literature, ESQ: Journal of the American Renaissance, The Emily Dickinson Journal, Genders, and Women’s Studies.
At Denison, Runzo served as chair of the Department of English, director of Queer Studies, and director of Women’s and Gender Studies. Additionally, she held Denison’s Lorena Woodrow Burke Chair of English from 2017 through 2022.
Whether it be in the Denison Biological Reserve or along the coast of Cornwall, Runzo has found much pleasure in exploring the natural world with her writing and literature students. Additionally, she fondly recalls her role with The Emily Dickinson Chorale and One Good Scholar, which performed numerous times for students in her American literature courses, as well as for the campus community and Denison alums.
More than once, she traveled to Washington, D.C., on buses with other Denisonians to participate in civic action, including the Women’s March in January of 2017. She has immensely appreciated working with so many brilliant, resourceful, creative, kind-hearted faculty colleagues and students, including scores of summer scholars, senior research projects, and directed studies.
In retirement, in addition to continuing to pursue scholarly projects with a focus on such authors as Melville, Alcott, and her beloved Dickinson, she looks forward to learning new things, reading books that have been patiently waiting on bookshelves, and continuing a walking tour around and across Great Britain.
Chuck Sokolik grew up in Washington State before heading to the East Coast for his undergraduate studies. His interest in chemistry and biochemistry took off while studying at Vassar College in upstate New York. There, he was drawn to the opportunity to conduct research that gave him the freedom to explore and think independently. Guided by his advisors in the field, he enjoyed being able to make mistakes while expanding on what his textbooks offered. He later went on to earn his Ph.D. at the University of California, Los Angeles.
For Dr. Sokolik, the draw of coming to Denison was the opportunity to spearhead and shape a program. Asked to initiate and build the university’s biochemistry program, he jumped at the chance to step into a leadership role. In the years that followed, he enjoyed supporting many dedicated biochemistry majors, as well as the students who sought his advice on the big picture in addition to daily classwork. Reflecting on his time on campus, Sokolik finds that it has been just as important to help expand the horizons of Denison students as it was to work with those in his field. Beyond the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, he was a mentor for the Posse Scholars program, supporting several cohorts of Denison students throughout their college careers and later
as a national liaison. He credits this work with transforming his view of students at Denison and art liberal arts colleges in general. He also became involved with the I Know I Can Foundation in Columbus, which spawned the DenisonColumbus Alliance, a program that creates pathways for talented and deserving students to become Denisonians. Recognizing the importance of such opportunities as the only first-generation college student on the faculty of the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, Sokolik fondly recalls these meaningful contributions.
Academically, Sokolik’s research has focused on enzyme and peptide microarray synthesis, using electrostatic printing in collaboration with the late Gary Nishioka, Ph.D., President of H&N Instruments in nearby Newark, Ohio.
While retirement might bring an end to his work in scientific teaching and research, Sokolik describes the next chapter as not the end of a career but the beginning of new directions. He looks forward to taking the time to pursue many other interests more deeply, including exploring the arts and athletics, writing novels, and spending time with his daughter, who will soon graduate from a liberal arts institution herself.
Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa
Philip A. Glotzbach, B.A., M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D.
Philip A. Glotzbach, Skidmore College president emeritus, is being recognized at today’s Commencement with the conferring of an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
As Skidmore’s president for 17 years, from 2003 to 2020, Glotzbach led efforts that invigorated the college’s liberal arts education through new academic programs, student apartments, and buildings for arts and sciences — including a new music center and the Center for Integrated Sciences, the largest single academic building project in Skidmore’s history. Glotzbach is the author of a forthcoming book, Embrace Your Freedom: Winning Strategies to Succeed in College and In Life, a primer for college students to gain the most from their educational experience and for parents to support them in doing so.
“Many young people today are expressing serious doubts about democracy. Though their frustration is understandable, we just don’t have the luxury of turning our back on politics or sitting out elections,” Glotzbach says. “All of us need to value our citizenship and accept our crucial role in determining our collective future.”
Glotzbach’s Commencement keynote is an opportunity for him to return to The Hill, where he taught philosophy for 15 years. He helped launch the summer Greek studies program and was integral in creating the philosophy, politics, and economics major, which he says was inspired by a similar program at Oxford University. He also (occasionally) played guitar and sang folk music with Emeritus Professor of Theatre Jon Farris.
After Denison, Glotzbach served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and later vice president for Academic Affairs at the University of Redlands in Redlands, Calif. He earned his B.A. in philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, and his M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in philosophy at Yale University. He holds honorary doctorates from Centre College and Skidmore College.
