Maritime Museum Houston Ship Channel

YEAR Spring 2013 PROFESSOR Douglas Oliver SITE Houston Ship Channel AREA 55 000 sq ft I created 2 axes for the design of the form. One is the viewing axis of the bridge and the other is the axis that one approaches the site. My first intention was to create a main form that mainly consists of exhibition spaces. Five consecutive dynamic forms define the main from. Unit four also acts as a transition unit since it provides a ramp from the upper floor to the lower floor. The main form introduces a monocoque structure, which is able to create open spaces for exhibitions and the structure is exposed in order to achieve the effect of continuity between units. The form is made from steel structure and translucent glass. The main form creates two courtyards that are used for public gathering spaces. The remaining program such as mechanical rooms, storage and exhibition preparation are located in the lower level, underground, and accessible through stairs from the upper courtyard.

Innovation District Houston

YEAR Fall 2013 PROFESSOR Christopher Hight SITE Buffalo Bayou, Houston AREA 136 acres I started by changing and recreating the topography to bring the water to the site. With the topographic manipulation, I isolated the site from the city and created three types of hills, which will affect the distribution of buildings and roads. Also the fluctuation of water levels contributed to the creation of ecological diversity by forming wetlands. The buildings bridge between hills and adapt to the sectional variation of the topography. They cross, intersect, split and merge to create a secondary network on the topography. Hills pull the site horizontally and buildings pull the site vertically by pulling bayou and street against each other. Landscape can be experienced through buildings. Retail program is used to connect the network of buildings of redidential and office program. The last network is the network of roads. The vehicular and pedestrian networks act as connectors between hills and buildings ans also connect the site to the city and highways.

Project is based on selecting two structural systems; one steel and one concrete system and hybridizing the two systems to create a long span enclosure that adapts itself to the sectional conditions of the site. The two structural typologies chosen are hyper-curved shell and horizontal diagrid. The diagrid is projected on the shell in order to hybridize the two systems.

Culture Annex Hermann Park

MAIN STREET

YEAR Fall 2012 PROFESSOR Andrea Manning SITE Hermann Park, Houston AREA 10 000 sq ft Working on a site that is located where the urban side of Houston meets the park side, my interpretation for this situation was to design an iconic building that corresponds to both sides: a building to see the park from and to be seen from the park. A dynamic form is created, which gradually rises as it reaches to the second floor. The building is connected to Hermann Loop and Fannin Street by two entrances on the both sides of the building. Exterior walkways and uncovered multipurpose spaces are created to experience the dynamic form of the building both from the park and the city scape. The walkways merge in the interior of the building to create the reception and lobby area. The building is made out of mainly metal panels and translucent glass to preserve the dynamic form. The interior of the building consists of 3 units. Units are offset from the base plan to create the interior circulation path, which allows experiencing the building from inside.

Figure to Line House Houston YEAR Spring 2012 PROFESSOR Dawn Finley SITE Houston AREA 2 000 sq ft In the process of designing a conceptual house, I developed an architectural strategy with which I can shape and organize spaces and establish views in or out. My concept takes triangles as basis. By disconnecting the edges of each triangle, I developed a line from each triangle and I aligned them to unite the triangular grid that constitutes the plan. The figure, triangle, transforms to a line at the top that is dynamic and that forms the angular walls of the conceptual house to create rooms. The exterior walls connect each edge of a triangle to the corresponding fragment of the line. Second floor of the building represents a transformation between the figure and the line. It not only follows the line that is created by walls, which is a characteristic of a line, but also defines the edges of a floor, which is a characteristic of a figure. The spatial arrangement of the house also responds to the concept since the figures are occupied as rooms and line is used to direct the circulation.
