Each U.S. president’s name has been adopted for a variety of uses. In 1800, our nation’s new capital was named after the first president, George Washington. In 2008, a particular species of round fungus beetle was named for our newest ex-president, George W. Bush. Okay, so not all of the uses are flattering… • Fort Adams, named in honor of our second president, John Adams, sits along the coast in Newport, Rhode Island. Crowds gather at the location each year to attend the celebrated Newport Jazz Festival. • One of Cincinnati’s most posh areas is Mt. Adams, named for John Quincy Adams. In the mid-1800s, the hill became the home of the world’s most powerful telescopes. • Blues music legend Chester Arthur Burnett was named for President Chester Alan Arthur. As a performer, Burnett adopted a more colorful name: Howlin’ Wolf. • Do you recall which group of TV students attended James Buchanan High? Was it the hoopsters from The White Shadow, the teenagers in Happy Days, or the Sweathogs from Welcome Back, Kotter? If they can't see a wound and can't stitch it up, apparently it isn't a "real" injury. That's what a Pentagon awards advisory group concluded when it decided against awarding the Purple Heart to military personnel with post-traumatic stress disorder. It's hard to diagnose injuries that can't be seen, and PTSD and psychological problems are some of the most confounding injuries to diagnose and treat. There are arguments on both sides of the issue here. On the one hand, PTSD is a real condition brought about in soldiers who experience a traumatic event in war. It can be disabling, just as much as a physical injury. Many physical injuries can be healed, maybe with multiple surgeries or maybe with prosthesis in the event a limb is lost, but some semblance of normality can be regained with many physical injuries. Not necessarily so with PTSD. The effects can linger forever, and while there are some treatments that seem to help, for the most part the sufferer doesn't get much relief. Soldiers with PTSD know full well the stigma of suffering from an injury that can't be seen. With the award of a Purple Heart, they feel that their injury will be acknowledged. On the other side, the Purple Heart has historically been given only for wounds received in battle "as a direct result of enemy action" that is intended to maim or kill. The Military Order of the Purple is very much against awarding for a non-visible injury like PTSD. Its director of public relations has been quoted as saying, "Shedding blood is the objective." As long as that is the prevailing sentiment, it's not likely that PTSD and other psychological problems will get the recognition that comes with a Purple Heart.
