WESTERN AUSTRALIA
On the south coast of Western Australia, in the heart of the Great Southern region, this ancient landscape offers a very contemporary travel experience. It is rich in colours and contrasts. Golden sand fringes turquoise water. Surf beaches and sheltered swimming bays front the wild Southern Ocean where, in winter, migrating whales add to the scenery. Well-marked walking trails meander through wilderness areas. Granite outcrops and rugged headlands give way to silver-barked karri forests and green vineyards. Kangaroos and alpacas share paddocks with sheep and cattle. Denmark combines the charm of a country town with a thriving and sophisticated arts, food and wine scene. With its backdrop of forested slopes and waterways, it’s the perfect place to be as active or relaxed as you choose. Take a bush walk, ride a bike or launch a boat. Stroll around the town’s historic buildings, cool cafes, and galleries galore. A scenic drive offers the attractions of vineyards and cellar doors, artisanal art and craft, seasonal fresh produce and views to the Southern Ocean. We hope you enjoy the great scenery and great service of the Great Southern. Have a great stay.
Travelling by... Denmark is just 4½ hours from Perth. The most direct road access is via the Albany Highway to Mt Barker, and then following the Mount Barker Road. DENMARK GUIDE 2017 & 2018

Nature has been flaunting her beauty here for millions of years. The Great Southern is one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots possessing the richest and most threatened reservoirs of plant and animal life on earth. The region is in the top nine habitats for terrestrial (land) biodiversity, with a higher proportion of endemic species than any other equivalent region including birds and many species of marsupial.

This region is also in the top six for marine biodiversity, containing the most southerly coral reefs in the world due to the offshore Leeuwin Current. The abundance of marine life in the estuaries and coastline attract dolphins, seals and southern right and humpback whales.

Nornalup to Conspicuous Cliff, Ficifolia Drive and Peaceful Bay
This touring route begins on Hill Top Road, to the east of Walpole. From Hilltop Lookout there are magnificent views of the majestic Nornalup Inlet. A short walk through the forest leads to the Giant Tingle Tree. From here you can continue back down to the highway, or follow the road to Circular Pool. It is splendid in winter when the tannins in the water froth like cappuccino. A boardwalk meanders from the car park through the forest along the riverbank. Return via a one-way road to North Walpole Road. (This route is unsealed and is unsuitable for caravans). To return to Walpole, turn left. To visit Mount Frankland, turn right and after 8km you will see a sign for the Swarbrick Art Trail (500-metre-return walk through the old growth karri forest past art installations and sculptures). Continue on North Walpole Road for 13km and you will see a turn off on the right to the Mt Frankland Discovery Centre (7km unsealed road, unsuitable for caravans). There are a number of fantastic walks on offer at the Mount Frankland site. Return to Walpole via North Walpole Road, or take Hazelvale Road to the Valley of the Giants.
Nornalup started as a railhead and farming settlement nestled on the stunning Frankland River. You can fish from the banks, launch a boat or hire a canoe and paddle to Monastery Landing. Wildflowers Enjoy walking or driving through temperate forests and discover the hidden wonders of the forest floor. These amazing ecosystems support a large variety of native animals and delicate wildflowers. The countryside is adorned with wildflowers from mid-winter through to late summer.
Taste Sensation Indulge your tastebuds on a journey of discovery through the Denmark food and wine appellation; there is nothing else like it. Eat fresh seafood and organic produce from farm gate to plate. Indulge at Taste Great Southern, the largest food and wine festival in Western Australia (annually held in March – April). Spend a lazy day in the vines sampling award winning cool climate wines.
Awesome Adventures Denmark is an adventure-lovers’ paradise. If you love the thrill of an adrenaline rush, then look no further. There are loads of action-packed activities – four-wheel driving, standing on Western Australia’s Southern-most point, flying like an eagle over magnificent coastline, surfing the waves, mountain biking, bushwalking… just to name a few. Book a tour through the Denmark Visitor Centre.
Sun, surf and sand Denmark offers a few extras on top of the traditional beach-andbush family holiday. Pick fruit at farms or feed and pat animals. Horse-ride, cycle or paddle along the calm-water inlet. During school holiday activity programs learn to swim at Greens Pool, surf at Ocean Beach and explore national parks.
Denmark is home to a magnificent aquatic playground with over 100 km of sparkling coastline. Experience gigantic granite boulders at Elephant Rocks, sculpted limestone and dramatic dolerite cliffs, secluded white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and thunderous surf.
Winter Warmth
Romantic Escapes
Experience the enchantment of winter in Denmark – think pinot, gourmet pies and crackling log fires. The chill in the air brings crispness to the leaves, a landscape bejewelled with icy dew and memorable mornings as the sun rises over haunting yet romantic vistas. Denmark will warm the cockles of your heart and soul with its winter playground full of hearty food options, fortified wines and cosy corners.
Reaffirm or revive romance with your loved one. Stay in a luxurious spa suite; enjoy a couples’ massage; fine-dine at a table for two; picnic under the stars on local delicacies.
Blokes’ Weekend Off Girls’ Getaway Take time out together. Wake for sunrise at the ocean and finish the day with sundowners on the verandah. In between, charter a tour to vineyards and cellar doors; book yoga, massage and beauty treatments; dine out or order catering in; spoil yourself with a treasure from a boutique store or art gallery.
Get away from work and the everyday grind to experience a fishing mecca. Guarantee the catch of the day on a Denmark fishing charter or drop a line in off the rocks. Get off-road into remote national parks and experience the real wilderness on a 4WD tour or kayak down stream surrounded by captivating forest. At the end of the day relax with a local handcrafted brew and a hearty feed of local produce.

taste s ensation The Great Southern produces great food. It appears on innovative and delicious fine-dining menus at Denmark’s quality restaurants and wineries; on more casual – but equally delicious – cellar door platters; and in the daily specials of cafes in town. It also appears for sale alongside homemade jams, jellies and pickles at roadside stalls at Denmark’s many organic orchards, farms and gardens. Think fresh, free-range, seasonal and sustainable. Marron crayfish appear in January only; asparagus is picked throughout spring; berries ripen in summer. Small-scale cheese, chocolate and toffee makers produce high-quality goods throughout the year. Annual festivals such as Taste Great Southern celebrate the region’s food culture and offer master classes and workshops.

wonderful weddings SEALED WITH A KISS Denmark is the perfect place for a proposal and an ideal romantic location for a wedding, honeymoon or anniversary. Denmark weddings can be classic white, country informal or cuttingedge contemporary. Our world-class venues have world-class views, whether you are a small group barefoot at the beach or a gathering of extended family and friends in a more formal setting. Say ‘I do’ on a beach or in the bush; in a church or at a cellar door; on the riverbank or on the river. Get married under a marri tree. Whatever you imagine for your wedding day, we can help make it happen. Let locals take the stress away from the day. Among Denmark’s many wedding specialists are florists to make bush flowers into bridal bouquets; chefs and caterers to create formal sit down affairs, degustations, buffets or barbecues; musicians to create the mood you’re after; wedding planners to attend to all facets of wedding prep; and photographers to capture it. We have time for people in Denmark – and a wedding makes you part of this community, part of the down-to-earth Denmark family. To plan your wedding visit the dedicated wedding page on www.denmark.com.au or talk to local experts at the Denmark Visitor Centre.

We chose to get “ married in Denmark as it is one of our favourite holiday destinations and provided a beautiful backdrop to celebrate our wedding. Our guests loved coming to Denmark to help us celebrate our special day and enjoyed exploring all that the local area has to offer. Kristy & Stephen Anthony
”
We were fortunate enough to be married in Denmark in March 2014. We chose Denmark “ because of its rugged natural beauty and authentic rural Australian feel, juxtaposed with modern architectural and culinary sophistication focusing on local and seasonal produce. We loved being able to show off one of WA’s best kept secrets to local and international visitors alike. Our guests loved having the opportunity to explore the extraordinary landscape and coastline, to immerse themselves in Denmark’s charming community and to delight in the local tastings of world class wine and small goods. Our wedding was made all the more special by the attention to detail shown by every local service provider and their genuine focus on making our wedding the most memorable day of our lives.

Having our wedding in Denmark was a very easy decision to “ make!! It is such a wonderful location and we really wanted our friends and family to experience and share it with us. The beautiful landscape, wonderful food and relaxed lifestyle made our day unforgettable. However, it was the people of Denmark that made it truly special. Thank you! We’ll be back for more :-) Katja & James
