Keene benefits from stimulus

TAMING A MONSTER By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com KEENE — The town of Keene will find the burden of its upcoming water project a little lighter thanks to $3.1 million in federal stimulus funding. The $3 million grant and $100,000 low-interest loan was announced May 28 by U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsak as part of $143 million doled out by the USDA through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to 60 separate projects in 21 states. The money will be used to offset the cost of a $5.3 million water storage and distribution system planned for Keene Water District 2, which serves the hamlet of Keene Valley. “Initially when we applied to [USDA] Rural Development, it was for a $500,000 grant,” explained Keene Supervisor Bill Ferebee. “When the stimulus funding came down, the grant increased significantly.” Ferebee said the money will be used to pay off most of a $4.2 million no-interest loan secured for the project last year through

WILLSBORO — An art exhibit in Willsboro recently gave visitors the chance to see the Lake Champlain Monster up close and personal – along with the man who draws him. The Willsboro Heritage Society opened its doors for the season June 5 with an exhibit featuring original art by Sid Couchey, the Harvey Comics cartoonist and longtime Essex resident who has helped make “Champy” a household name in the Champlain Valley and beyond. The exhibit is one of a handful of summer events in Willsboro designed to celebrate the Lake Champlain Quadricentennial. It also served as a birthday celebration for Couchey, who turned 90 on May 24 and was present at the reception. With several dozen original paintings showing Champy in a wide variety of context, the exhibit is the most extensive display of Couchey’s Champy artwork. Altogether, he estimates having composed more than 100 separate works featuring the monster.

Among the many original paintings and drawings is a series entitled “Champy by the Masters” in which Couchey depicts the fabled monster in the distinct styles of famous artists like Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, and Vincent van Gogh. Couchey, who is wellknown for his drawings of Richie Rich and other Har-

vey Comics characters, has been producing visualizations of Champy for more than 30 years and said the creature is one of his favorite subjects. “Champy is number two,” said Couchey, “right behind any Cleveland sports team.” Even at 90 years old, the accomplished cartoonist still managed to work the room with his sharp-witted

charm, greeting friends and admirers, and autographing prints of his work. Copies of an August 1978 edition of the Valley News featuring a Champy supplement illustrated by Couchey are available for purchase at the exhibit. “Sid became known for his rendition of Champy based on that,” said Morris

Verizon plans to activate 10 new cell towers By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com

NEW YORK — Representatives of Verizon Wireless announced the company’s plans last week to activate at least 10 new cell phone towers this summer across the North Country. Verizon spokesman John O’Malley said the towers should be operating by the end of the year. “We’re very excited about these various projects – they will be beneficial to the North Country,” he said. O’Malley wouldn’t provide specifics on tower location. But he said the new projects will provide Verizon with 90 cell towers in the company's northern network, including 26 cell sites within the

Adirondack Park. Currently, the company has six applications pending with the Adirondack Park Agency. The list includes two towers in the Town of Wells and single towers in Westport, Duane, Wilmington and Queensbury. One of the company’s goals has been to bring better service to the I-87 Northway. To date, Verizon Wireless has activated four of its planned 13 new sites to bring service to a previously uncovered stretch of the highway. Marquett Smith, president of Verizon’s upstate region, said the new cell sites reflect the company’s commitment to providing reliable wireless service. “We’ve taken the lead on expanding wireless service throughout the Adiron-

dack region, both inside the park and outside,” Smith said. “We believe wireless service is essential to the people who live in the region.” The new towers will provide increased cell phone service, as well as access to Mobile Broadband, Verizon’s high-speed wireless Internet service. In the past 18 months, Verizon has activated 14 sites in the North Country. The new cell towers cost approximately $550,000 apiece, representing an investment of more than $5 million during 2009. O’Malley says Verizon plans to invest more than $100 million in the upstate New York network in the coming year. “We keep adding customers,” he said. “So it only makes sense to provide better service moving forward.”

RSVP luncheon spared from budget axe County board finds funds for event By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — The annual Retired Senior Volunteer Program recognition luncheon has been saved. The dinner and awards ceremony held every fall had been canceled for 2009 because of budget cuts. That changed June 1 when the Essex County Board of Supervisors decided to fund the program. “This is great news,” said Patsy McCaughin, RSVP executive director. “We want to express our sincere thanks to the board for their generosity.” The 35th annual RSVP luncheon will be held Oct. 7 in Port Henry. Each year the program recognizes the contributions of RSVP volunteers. Nearly 500 RSVP volunteers logged more than 60,394 hours of service at 93 locations in Essex County during 2008, according to McCaughin. More than 200 people at-

tended the 2008 luncheon. RSVP is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service and Catholic Charities. RSVP is a United Way Agency. Earlier this year McCaughin announced the recognition ceremony would be canceled because of RSVP budget cuts in Essex and Clinton counties. “It is with great regret that we must cancel our annual volunteer luncheons scheduled for October,” she said in April. “Even sadder is Essex County is celebrating its 35th anniversary. Both directors felt it important to keep volunteer ben-

efits, such as mileage and meal reimbursement, so other cuts were enacted.” Jay Supervisor Randy Douglas notified McCaughin the Essex County Board of Supervisors has agreed to take $1,800 from the county contingency fund to pay for the annual luncheon. The annual dinner is catered by the Essex County Nutrition Program for the Elderly and served to the volunteers by students from Moriah Central School and friends of RSVP. “RSVP is a communitybased program where people help people of all ages through

he NCSPCA normally features one pet every week who is looking for a forever home. Many of these lucky dogs and cats quickly find homes. However, some of our residents, even though they are wonderful pets, are bypassed in favor of other cats and dogs and remain at the shelter for weeks, months, or even as long as a year. This week the NCPSCA would like to highlight some of our long-term residents who are hoping to find themselves soon in a home of their own. Apollo is sweet young cat who has been with us since last summer along with her siblings, who were rescued as kittens from an abandoned golf course. Because she was quite timid and shy when he arrived at the shelter, she did not quickly find a home. Over the past year, she has become used to people and is eager to find a quiet home with a windowsill where she can enjoy the sun and watch the birds outside. She is neutered and his shots are up to date. She has a beautiful, orange-sherbet colored coat and soulful brown eyes. Princess is a Staffordshire Bull Terriermix who has been with us for more than a year. She came in as part of an abuse case involving 33 cats and dogs. She is a gentle and good-natured lady who is looking for a retirement home to spend her golden years. She adapts well to different environments. Because she is an older dog, Princess has been passed over in favor of younger dogs and puppies. She would like you to know that she still has plenty of love to give! Virgil is a beagle mix who has been featured multiple times, without finding the right "match" for his personality. Like Princess, he is an older dog, but he is a bit more set in his ways. He loves afternoon walks but enjoys being a couch potato just as much. He is a bit of a Scrooge sometimes because he doesn't like to be around

Sharon too much action or children. If you are looking for a loyal friend who will not jump on you or chew your shoes, Virgil may be the friend you need to meet! Sharon is a beautiful, long-haired tortoiseshell cat who is quite a personality. She was a bit of a "wild child" when she arrived at the shelter, but she has become more easygoing with the attentions of the shelter staff. She is an intelligent young lady who will "tell it like it is." She is looking for a home where she can be the queen of all she surveys. All of these pets have much to offer the right home... they just haven't found their match yet. You may find that one of these pets would make a wonderful addition to your family, even if they are not as young as some other pets, need a little encouragement, or a little patience. If you come to see them at the NCSPCA, please take the time to ask about other long-term residents we have - one of them may just capture your heart!

Jim LaForest • 963-8782 have been informed by a source who asked not to be identified because no one is authorized to release the information that Wanda McKenna and Daniel Sweatt are changing routes on June 7. Wanda is moving to the Willsboro Route of Mr. Sweatt with Mr. Sweatt moving to her Essex Route. We will miss Wanda after 18 years or so and I am sure that Willsboro feels the same about Mr. Sweatt. In a way it’s a strange move. I wonder what it’s all about. Well, I don’t know Mr. Sweatt very well because he worked and lives far away in Willsboro. But, he does come to Essex often and has relatives living here. I hope he and Wanda will both be pleased. We will miss you Wanda and go well into your new day, and don’t look back because “they’re gaining.” As I write I am under intense psychological pressure. There is nothing worse in the world than spending an immense amount of time trying to please someone only to find you’re being rejected. It seems that a number of people in the area were invited to go down to Albany for a 15-

minute sortie but I was not among the invited. Of course every invitee had to pay their own way, pay for their own food, buy their own gas, and only applaud at cues. Let me tell you I will get even over the snub, just wait and see. Trish Walker tells me that 3,500 (or was it 35?) people showed up at her Porch Breakfast Saturday, two of whom were expecting me to be there autographing bagels. I will send personal letters of apology to everyone. Say, is it true that Rhonda is opening the Bay View for food and drinks? Last Saturday, we had a lot of high prestige males at the DNC. There we were, sitting in quiet and companionable silence when someone walked and woke us. Even though I have 15 more items, my battle with Essex Legionnaire Drooling Syndrome has ravaged me with a raging temperature of 101, causing me to lose focus. Of course I tend to lose focus even when I am not battling this dreaded conversion reaction. So wait for more next week, I can do no more.

ommunity activities really abounded this past week. The Willsboro Visitors Center is now open daily 10 to 4 with volunteer Ambassadors on hand to lend assistance. We now have eight new informational history panel units to tell the highlights of our community’s history. Stop in and take a look and we are always welcoming new volunteers to sit at the center, call Janice Allen with your offer. The Willsboro United Methodist church had their first public supper for the season and the turn out was great. The Willsboro Republican Committee had a “Meet & Greet Night” the candidates running for office were available to express their desire to run for elected offices. This was held at the Willsboro Lanes. Dale Ferris has really made this a special place here in town, and it is a great place for regular or special events. The Willsboro Heritage had an open house to honor local artist Sid Couchey, as this year the museum exhibit is featuring his artistic works of “Lake Champlain Champy” and to honor the artist’s 90th birthday. Hereto, the Museum is now open for the season and welcomes volunteers. Saturday was the first of our community Quad Celebrations with a parade and family picnic time at Noblewood area. The parade paid tribute to many of our historic highlights both from the past to the pres-

ent. The 10 little Indians (a scout group) led the parade, followed by a direct descendant of our founder William Gilliland, Tilly Close and her husband. The West family had a large group, and the four Patterson women joined us. A pick-up group of local musicians got together to provide music for the parade and they were great, and much, much more. Then we were entertained by the Sounds of the Northway group down at Noblewood as we ate our lunch. Some even danced. It is great to have Ethel’s Dew Drop In open for the 35th season. Wow; what a great service to our community. Next Saturday will be another all-day event for our second Quad celebration. All will take place down at the Noblewood lodge area, starting at 9 a.m., all day different events. Watch cable for a time schedule, or check the Valley news this week. ast week I went to my first meeting at the fire house, where Captain Denny Westover welcomed me as the newest of Westport's volunteer firefighters. Afterward, Dave Napper very kindly set me up with gear—turn-out pants and coat, rubber boots, helmet, helmet liner, and gloves for structure fires, with lighter-weight pants, jacket, helmet, and gloves for wildlands fires. Everyone was very helpful, answering my questions and offering tips and suggestions. Along the way, someone advised me to put the gloves and helmet liner in the pockets of the coat, so they wouldn't get lost. I went home and did so, stuffing everything into an old duffel bag and sticking it in the back of the Jeep. I was very glad I did all that right away, since the firefighter gods didn't waste any time. The next morning at 2 a.m. my pager erupted and I stumbled out of bed and headed into town. A tractor-trailer had jack-knifed across the northbound offramp at Exit 31. At the fire house I got into my gear and rode out in one of the trucks with Gary Reynolds driving. Luckily, there were no injuries. The most serious problem seemed to be a gasoline leak, where the truck's gas tank had scraped along a guardrail. The Wadhams crew was already there, and for a few minutes I helped C. G. Stephens and Courtney

Fair put some "diesel diapers" down to soak it up. Mostly I just watched and tried to stay alert and helpful. I was very fortunate to have such a gentle first call, I imagine. I know that it won't always be so easy, but I feel thankful for this one. I start Firefighter 1, the basic training course, at the end of July, which runs a couple of evenings a week until mid-October. I'll be reporting on my progress from time to time, since it seems like a good thing for everyone in the community to know what it's like to go through the process. Till then, don't forget that we need volunteers for both firefighters and emergency squad. Drop me a line if you're curious about it, or call Fire Chief Jim Westover, Jr. at 962-8969. It's a great group, and I can tell you from experience that they take good care of you. Kudos to Martha Swan and Vito Arste, who organized and hosted "The Hills Are Alive," a benefit for young artists in the North Country region, at their home last Sunday. Despite a little drizzle, the turnout was excellent and the talent on display was awesome, from classical music to Shakespearian swordplay. Well done, everyone. Finally, to all you brilliant students at WCS—best of luck on your Regents next week!

ADIRONDACK CRYPTOGRAM Westport school a good investment To the editor: In March I received a letter from Mr. Ulrich V. Hoffmann regarding his concerns with the school budget, low enrollment and other issues. I did not go to the meetings by choice because I get disgusted with the negative comments made by uninformed individuals in our community. My husband was in attendance at the last budget meeting on May 7 and shared some of the discussion and comments with me. For your information, there were students and teachers from WCS at the BEST Walk against underage drinking on April 26. I know because I was there. Furthermore, our principal is not expendable like you may think. I would challenge you folks who think she is, to attend a school function where the budget is not the main topic and see her interacting with the students, parents and community. But I have yet to see the majority of the people complaining about the budget and their taxes attend any student function. In the letter from Mr. Hoffmann, he states that the school is an important asset but it is also a liability because of the high taxes. Unless you live on some unclaimed land and never read the newspaper, you should know by now that taxes are high everywhere. He also suggests some ex-

tracurricular activities be cut from the budget. Has anyone read any local newspapers lately? Did you not see the articles about the FBLA at WCS? WCS represented and took top honors! Did you miss the news about our basketball teams being recognize for their academic/sports achievements? Did you go to the last Drama Club presentation? Let's punish the students for their academic successes by taking away extracurricular activities? At WCS, students must maintain academics if they want to participate in extracurricular activities. Did you know that? Mr. Hoffmann suggests there be a three-to-five-year plan put in place to control expenses. I wish the federal government would have had a plan like that when fuel prices soared, the stock market took a beating and the banks started going belly up. I have a plan and one four-letter word for those who don't like the budget and don't support our school and students — move. Nicole Sudduth, Westport

Pair Coupons with Rock-Bottom Sales A

rmed with the knowledge that every item in the grocery store is on sale at its lowest price just once in a 12-week time span, planning your shopping trips around what is on sale versus what you need in a particular week is the next step to saving money on groceries. For example, boneless, skinless chicken breasts are a perfect example of a price-volatile item. Last week at my grocery store, chicken breasts were on sale for $1.79/pound. This week, they’re $5.29/pound. While I may not plan to make a meal with chicken breasts this week, I know that because they were at their low price point last week, it will be about 3 months before I see them at that great price again. Last week, I bought enough chicken to last my family until they’re offered again at a low price. But I didn’t pay $1.79/pound for my chicken. I paid $1.29/pound. I used a 50-cent coupon for each package I purchased, but the coupons I used weren’t offered in this week’s paper. The coupons I used were several months old – not expired, just older than this current week. Now, if you currently use coupons, let me guess how you do it: Your Sunday newspaper arrives. You page through the coupon inserts, clipping out the items you want to buy this week … and you throw the insert away. But this is the No. 1 mistake most coupon users make. Why is this a mistake? Grocery stores’ best sales rarely coincide with the week coupons for these items appear in the newspaper. The grocery store knows weeks in advance what coupons are coming out in the paper. They also know that most people who use coupons will cut them and use them the same week that they came in the newspaper. So, the grocery store will typically put some of the coupon products on sale – just not at their lowest price points. Shoppers will think they’re getting a deal, but the store has enticed you into purchasing at a higher price – even

with your coupon. If you use your coupons when the chicken is on sale for $3.29/pound, you won’t have them anymore when the chicken’s price drops below the $2.00/pound mark Until next week, I’ll leave you with an exciting example of another reason you should save your coupons. Pairing a $1 coupon with a $1 sale results in free items! Now, you may be thinking, By Jill Cataldo “Really? Is it that easy?” You be the judge. This week, pasta, cartons of lemonade, instant potatoes and toothbrushes were on sale at my store for $1 each. I redeemed a $1 coupon for each of those items, so they were free to me. But in each case, the coupons I used came from inserts published weeks ago; a shopper wouldn’t find them in the current week’s inserts. Shoppers who clip coupons the oldfashioned way might not have needed a toothbrush three months ago, when the $1-off coupon ran in the paper. So, they threw the insert away. Super-Couponers keep their inserts. They understand that the coupons inside may provide them with the chance to land a free item in the future. Why throw away money? © CTW Features

College a time of change for some I

n a couple of weeks, students from all over Essex County will be graduating from high school and some will head off to college at the end of the summer. For some departing students, high school was a joyride from start to finish. They may have been an academic ace or a star athlete or both. The prom queen with dozens of suitors and followers will fondly recall their time in the spotlight. For a few, school may have been more like an experience in daily torture where the biggest hope for each day is that no one will notice them or pick on them. Most will leave high school with mixed feelings. These students harbor more regret around what they did not do rather than what they did do. They regret not having tried out for a part in the drama club play or not having run for student council and a variety of other opportunities. In high school people that held a different view than you, looked or acted different than you may have caused you to dismiss them. The maturity gained by the college experi-

ence will cause most to look back on some of their high school experience as a product of immature reasoning. Those that bullied, were bullied or were the silent witnesses to bullying will all experience feelings of regret. This regret is an element of processing and letting go. College will be a time of great emancipation for some that are being released from the bondage of By Scot Hurlburt or baggage from high school. These will be the young people that we encounter back from college that seem so different. They do not talk about other people or things anymore, they talk about ideas. A fantastic and glorious metamorphosis; they have a lightness about them and most have found their authentic voice, maybe for the first time. To those that have been reborn in the college experience, congratulations. To those in the wings, waiting for their chance, here it comes!

Customers still ‘Dropping Inn’ after 35 years By Matt Bosley

“Then I wasn’t going to open,” said Ethel. “I said, ‘I can’t do it alone.’” With the support of her family, Ethel ultimately decided to keep the family business going, opening the Dew Drop Inn seasonally from the end of April through October. The decision was welcomed by the restaurant’s customers, who have shown up by the hundreds for its opening each summer, despite very little advertising. Ethel’s Dew Drop Inn continues to serve its assortment of fast food and ice cream to patrons, who come on motorcycle, horseback, and even by the bus load from nearby PokO-MacCready summer camp. “We’re on the third generation already,” explained Ethel. “Some of them came when they were kids and now their kids and their grandkids come.” “Seeing the same faces at the window every year is great,” she added. Despite taking food orders for over 35 years, Ethel shows little sign of slowing down. “I’m probably just going to work here until I die,” she said. “This is where I belong, I guess.”

matt@denpubs.com WILLSBORO — With more than three decades worth of loyal customers, one local ice cream shop has become a summer tradition in Willsboro. Ethel’s Dew Drop Inn opened for the summer season on May 22 for its 35th year in operation. Since its establishment, it’s remained in the hands of a single family, that of Ethel Hathaway. Having both grown up in Willsboro, Ethel and her husband, Marshall, started the roadside restaurant in the summer of 1974 at its current location near the intersection of Route 22 and Farrell Road. “My husband always wanted to have a business of his own,” said Hathaway, “and when we got married, we just did it.” The Hathaways brought in three small camping cabins, constructing a roof that connected them and a small kitchen. It operated year-round and soon became a popular spot, attracting residents and summer visitors alike. Tragedy struck in 2003 when the building burned to the ground. The Hathaways rebuilt the smaller building currently in use at the site. As if that weren’t enough, Marshall passed away suddenly in February of 2005.

Glenn, a historical author who is collaborating with Couchey on a book. Glenn said Couchey’s portrayal of Champy as a friendly monster has contributed to the promotion of tourism in the Champlain Valley. “I think it’s very positive for Essex County because you need things to get people to want to come here,” he said. The exhibit represents the first time the Heritage Society, which functions strictly as a

museum of local history, has devoted so much of its space to artwork. Still, those in charge of the museum say it is more than appropriate for the space. “Yes, we’re a history society,” said Heritage Society board member Darcey Hale, “but you know, he’s part of our history.” Champy, too, is part of the area’s history, explained Hale. She noted how there are accounts dating back to Samuel de Champlain himself that claim sightings of a huge snakelike water monster with a horse-like head lurking beneath the lake’s waters. Also on display at the exhib-

it is a powder horn dating from the War of 1812. It features a scrimshaw portrayal of Champy as a dog-like creature with a long, fish-like tail; further proof that tales of Champy are centuries-old. “There’s something wonderful about the mythology of Lake Champlain having its own primeval monster,” said Hale. The exhibit remains on display throughout the summer months during museum hours: Wednesdays from 1-4 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Stores caught in sting CROWN POINT — Five people were cited for selling alcoholic beverages to minors during a sting operation May 30. The Essex County Sheriff's Department sent a 19-year-old female into 20 stores to try to buy alcoholic beverages. The clerks who sold her alcohol were charged with misdemeanor first-degree unlawfully dealing with a child and the violation of delivery of an alcoholic beverage to an under-age person. The names of those arrested were not released, pending youthful-offender status, according to the Essex County Sheriff’s Department. The stores where alcohol was sold to an underage person were: Crown Point Convenience Store; Boyea’s in Moriah; Village Meat Market and Byrd’s Country Store, both in Willsboro; and Keeseville IGA Market. Twenty stores were checked in Keeseville, Willsboro, Westport, Moriah and Crown Point. All but five were in compliance.

AuSable Valley are Section VII Champs Abellard at shortstop, who barely missed a tag on McBrearity, then overthrew to third, allowing McBrearity to score the walk-off run. Finnegan and Pray each led the charge with two hits apiece for the Patriots. Abellard and Peryer each had two singles for Plattsburgh. “We set a goal this year to get to this game and to win this game,” said Caron. “We have a group of seniors who have worked very hard for this and I’m just happy for them.”

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — It all came down to which team made the fewest mistakes in the Section VII Class B softball championship June 3. In a highly defensive game, AuSable Valley took advantage of two conveniently timed miscues from Plattsburgh to edge the Hornets 2-1 for the Class B title. “It’s probably the most exciting game I’ve ever been involved with,” said Patriots head coach Jim Caron. “It’s the kind of game you hate to see anyone lose because both teams played so hard.” As is often the case, it started with excellent pitching as both pitchers went the distance in a win-or-go-home duel. Hornets hurler Kristin Fisher fanned 11 batters, including 10 through the first four innings, and walked three. Meanwhile, AuSable Valley’s Whitney Vincent tossed five strikeouts with no walks. “Whitney pitched a great game for us,” said Caron. “She kept us in the game.” Vincent got out of a jam in the top of the third when Plattsburgh had runners on second and third with one out. A strikeout and an infield fly kept the Hornets scoreless. With one out, Kelly McBrearity singled in the bottom of the inning, then stole second and third. She then scored the game’s first run on a pick-off error. The Patriots maintained that lead into the top of the sixth inning when Ashley Rabideau hit a double deep into center field for Plattsburgh. A sacrifice bunt advanced her to third and she was able to score on an overthrow to first. Fisher worked out of a tight spot in the bottom of the sixth when AuSable Valley loaded the bases with no outs. A pair of pop flies and a strikeout kept the score tied. The Hornets threatened in the top of the seventh with a leadoff single by Jonna Peryer. Charisse Abellard added a single to right, but AuSable Valley right fielder Zoe Saulsgiver made a dead-on throw to third ahead of Peryer for the out. “Throwing that runner out at third base was huge,” said Caron. “If she doesn’t make that play, we’ve got runners on first and third with just one out.” Headed into the bottom of the seventh with the score tied, the Patriots made good on the opportunity to put the game away.

As the tour moves through Wadhams, participants will learn about the architectural styles evidenced over the years of rebuilding and expansion. Tours will take place Saturday and Sunday, July 11 and 12 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Admission prices are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and children age 12 and older. It gets in your pores, man

Registration still open for craft fair

S

everal of my childhood summers were spent at my grandparents’ fishing cabin, deep in the black-fly infested wilds of northern Quebec. The experience was great not only for myself and the boatload of cousins who accompanied me, but also our parents who were able to ditch us for two months without the overhead of a traditional summer camp. There were moose. There were bear. There was manbearpig. Well, not the real manbearpig, but we did have a neighbor named Lionel who resembled something between a heavyweight boxer and a fur coat. He’d drink Canadian whiskey, laugh and slap our backs so hard you’d swear your eyes had popped clear out of your skull. Then, he’d mumble something in French Canadian, point and laugh some more. At least we thought it was French Canadian. It could have been some booze-created dialect that required soaking the listener with tobacco-tainted spittle. Either way we couldn’t make out a darn thing the manbearpig said. Which is probably how Gram wanted it. God forbid we returned to grade school the next year spewing French Canadian obscenities at our classmates through tobacco-tainted spittle. As entertaining as we found old Lionel, however, nothing could top the never-ending string of pranks my cousins and I would play on one another to wallow away the hot summer days. It seemed little was sacred and Gram — as long as no one got bruised or bloodied — would more-often-thannot applaud the creativity of the prankster and chide the gullibility of the prankee. Perhaps my all-time favorite, however, was played out on my cousin, Mike, by my brother, Brian. The year was 1980 and the pair agreed to hike to a small pond directly behind camp. Bored with the pace of the fishing, Brian decided to bet Mike $10 he couldn’t walk the length of a 30-foot log that hung precariously over the water. Without hesitation, Mike said, “I could if I take off my shoes.” Out he went, inch-by-inch, balancing himself with outstretched arms while delicately placing one bare foot before the other until he finally reached the spindly tip of the fallen tree. “See,” Mike said triumphantly, spinning slowly to face where Brian stood watching. But, Brian was no longer there. Instead, he had taken up a perch at the other end of the log and began leaping up and down, causing Mike’s end to wabble like a teeter-totter. “Aaaauuuggghhh,” Mike wailed and began running down the log toward safety. Two steps into the sprint, the realization hit he wasn’t going to make it and he launched himself toward shore — only to land in three feet of water and six feet of black pond muck. When he emerged, he looked like a cross between a Siamese cat and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. I’m not sure where the Siamese cat analogy came from, but trust me, he looked really unsightly — and smelled even worse. Ironically, Lionel’s camp contained one of the only indoor showers for miles, so, we stuffed Mike in and scrubbed him raw with common household cleaners. I say ironically because one would not consider a device that aids in the pursuit of personal hygiene to top Lionel’s list of favored camp amenities. Or, even the common household cleaner part — but anyway, I digress. Unfortunately, for Mike, black pond muck is like great soul music — it gets in your pores, man. In fact, I saw him just last year at a family gathering and he still stunk a bit like wet socks in the rear of the family van. I am kidding, of course. Great soul music doesn’t really get in your pores, man. Black pond muck, on the other hand, is like the International Paper waste treatment plant in mid-August. You can smell it from Quebec. If it makes you feel any better, Mike — I spoke to Brian, and he’s got your $10. John Gereau is managing editor of Denton Publications and an avid outdoorsman. When he isn’t enjoying a good prank on his cousin, Mike, he can be reached at johng@denpubs.com.

Roe Pond tournament a big hit

POTSDAM — Clarkson University sophomore Robert T. Hall, Keene Valley, recently participated with his team in the 2009 Mathematical Contest in Modeling. Hall was a member of the team of Clarkson University students’ designated “meritorious winners” of the competition. His performance helped to earn bragging rights for the university as the best overall school performance in the competition. Hall is majoring in software engineering and mathematics.

By Brian Venne The 19th Annual Roe Pond Fishing Tournament for Kids was held on Saturday, May 30. The fishing was fast and furious and so were the bugs. Plenty of large fish were lost, and no anglers were hooked. A great day of fishing was had by all. This years winners were: • Ages 2-4 Christopher Patterson at 2 pounds, 5 ounces. • Ages 5-7 Matt Deihl at 1 pound, 15 ounces. • Ages 8-10 Kadie Shelmicin at 2 pounds, 7 ounces (Lunker of the Day!), Matty McCray at 2 pounds, 6 ounces and McKenzie Peters at 2 pounds, 1 ounce. • Ages 11-13 Cole Gaddor at 2 pounds, 6 ounces and Alex Lashway at 2 pounds. • Ages 14-15 Unfortunately our Tournament Official has misplaced these winners as well as third place in ages 11-13. I humbly apologize for not having them. My first senior moment! All first place winners received cash, second and third place received poles and every angler received a bag of fishing lures. Our 20th year will be in 2010 and we are hoping to make our 20th Annual Tournament a very memorable one. Please practice catch and release. Remember Roe Pond is a Designated Childrens Fishing Pond. No adult fishing is allowed. Please teach sportsmanship, for these young anglers will be our future leaders.

Thank you! A very special Thank you to Steve Lamere and able Technician Chris. Without the Essex County Fish Hatchery there would be no Tournament for kids. You gentlemen do a tremendous job raising huge fish! Thank you to Jamie Wilson our Highway Superintendent and dedicated employees of the Moriah Highway Department. You gentlemen are our un-sung hero's for your before the Tournament work. A special thanks to Edward Roberts, Superintendent of Building and Grounds and Officer Arthur Brassard for handling the traffic. A very special thank you to Whitetails Unlimited for your gourmet hot dogs and soda, you make the Tournament a memorable event. To our Town Supervisor, Tom Scozzafava and Councilman Tony Harvish, Paul Salerno, Tom Anderson and Rick Carpenter for your support and not campaigning. Thank you Tom Olcott for volunteering to drive the truck on our stocking spree. You don't talk much but you take up less room than Jamie. Thank you to Dain Venne for wearing hip-boots loading and unloading our fish. It's nice to see someone else getting cold and wet. Hope you come back next year. Thank you to Rose French for being our official Photographer. A very special thank you to our sponsors, without your generous donations our prizes would be very meager. Thank you Bezon’s Bait & Tackle, Norm’s Bait & Tackle, Adirondacks Whitetails Unlimited, Ballsom Hollow, Port Henry Service Center, Walts Propane, Harland Funeral Home, Black Ash Club, Back to Health Chiropractic, Port Henry Mobil, Boni's Bistro, Nephew Insurance, Adirondack Wireless, Mineville Oil, Grover Hills Deli, Mineville Pharmacy, Larrows Garage, Essex County Leathernecks, Boyeas Grocery& Deli, Salerno & Son Plumbing, Scozzafava Electric, Dick Curran Sr., Moriah Youth Sports Program, Feeder Club, Port Henry Pools and Stewarts for the coffee and doughnuts. A special thank you to the guys who make it all happen, Joe (Coonrod) Rodriguez, Mike Aitner, Chip Perry Sr., Mike and Jason Vargo and Tom Langey. Without your dedication this Tournament would not be 19 years old. The Town of Moriah thanks you. Looking forward to #20.
