DOWNTOWN FESTIVITIES
This Week PADDLING
By Katherine Clark katherine@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH Ñ The MayorÕ s Cup Festivities carried the voices of local talent, the sound of pirates with treasures scattered throughout downtown for people to find, a day of white sails stretching across the horizon on Lake Champlain and the traditional regatta. The MayorÕ s Cup Festival and Regatta is PlattsburghÕ s most time-honored and highly anticipated summer tradition on Lake Champlain. The fourday celebration included the Boat Parade of Lights, 36th Annual Regatta, Post-Race barbecue and AwardÕ s Ceremony, as well as live music including Canadian Celtic rock band Enter the Haggis and the family fun band the Zucchini Brothers performed as well as several other bands, family arts and kidÕ s activities

WILLSBORO Ñ On a warm Tuesday, July 9, a brother-and sister duo swam the 8-mile stretch between Willsboro Point, New York and Shelburne Point, Vermont. Matthew Weiskotten, 26, and Shauna Weiskotten, 24, were recreating a special swim, while their mother, father, and sister followed them in a motorboat. Ò About 22 years ago, my dad swam across the lake and so for a long time, I wanted to see if I could do it,Ó Matt said. Ò I remember him [my dad] setting out and just looking across the lake and thinking Ô thereÕ s no way somebody could do that, it just seems impossible,Õ Ó Shauna said, Ò and I guess when I got to about [age] 12 or something it occurred to me that Ô hey maybe I could do that too.Õ Ó Their father, Ron Weiskotten, swam across the lake on July 23, 1991. Ò I remember the stretch between the Four Brother [Islands] and Juniper seemed like a long stretch, and then one of the things I did was I went around the north end of Juniper and Matt and Shauna went around the south end,Ó Ron said. After coming around the islands, Ron ended up more in the boating lanes so his wife, Jeanne, who was his guide in the

motorboat, stayed close to him to let other boats know where he was. At one point he had to swim out of the way of the Ethan Allen. Ò It wasnÕ t a close call, but you know when you see it coming at you itÕ s interesting,Ó Ron said. After making it to Shelburne, Ron remembers how good it felt just to walk up on shore and to know he made his goal. But he didnÕ t fathom that his children, who were 5 and 3 at the time, would follow suit. Ò I never dreamed someday theyÕ d [Matt and Shauna] be doing it like they are and it was wonderful to see them doing it,Ó Ron said. Ò They kept up a beautiful pace, just going and going and going. They were waiting for each other and at times they were almost swimming next to each other and I think that was definitely a benefit.” To train for the swim, Matt and Shauna built up their endurance. Matt works as a lifeguard at his local YMCA
so he often swims after work. Ò I have spent the last couple months preparing for this swim by working myself up to 100 laps a day for 5 days a week,Ó he said. Shauna was on the JV swim team in high school, so she knew she had to mentally as well as physically prepare to swim that length. Ò I started training around January through maybe half of March, but then I got really busy with job interviewing,Ó she said, Ò so when I got into the water, I was thinking Ô IÕ ll swim along as far as I can.Õ Ó At just after 1 p.m. on Tuesday, they started out from their grandparentÕ s summer home in Willsboro; Matt, clad in just swimming trunks, and Shauna, wearing a swim cap, goggles, and a Speedo swimsuit. Ron drove the boat, while Jeanne watched them and their sister, Leanna, handed them Gatorade to keep them hydrated. Ò The lake was beautiful, it was nice and calm the whole way. The thing we watched out for was logs but of course at the speed we were going there wasnÕ t much danger,Ó Ron said. “At first I was thinking it was too warm, but then I kind of realized once we got past Juniper

and the lake was colder, which felt nicer, my muscles started cramping more,Ó Shauna said, Ò so I was actually grateful that it had been really warm the whole way.Ó However, some stormy conditions appeared early into the swim. Ò When we got a little ways out, maybe around the [Four Brother] Islands, it started looking more and more stormy toward the New York side and of course the swimmers werenÕ t aware of that, they were too focused on Vermont,Ó Jeanne said. They could hear a little bit of thunder, but once past the Four Brother Islands, they could see the storm start to dissipate. But the wind, which had been a very light Southeast wind, suddenly switched a little more to the south. Ò A little bit of waves came up, but then we could see the calm water ahead and they [Matt and Shauna] kept kind of swimming back into the calm water so we stayed out of any major problems,Ó Jeanne said. Ò For me the hardest part was that my muscles were cramping up because they werenÕ t used to swimming such a long period of time,Ó Shauna said, Ò so I made sure I drank plenty of water and Gatorade and really focused on mind over matter and relaxing my muscles.Ó Ò Once I got out to Juniper, I was like Ô thereÕ s no way IÕ m not going the whole way now,Õ Ó she added. Along with keeping watch out for debris in the path of the boat or swimmers, Ron said that

The black bear is the most abundant large omnivore in the Adirondack Park. State officials estimate the population here to be more than 4,000. Adults can weigh in between 125 to 500 pounds and live to be 33. Blame Goldilocks and her godawful porridge for this next bit: our clever Adirondack bears can open campers’ “bear-proof” food canisters, and might happily waltz into your kitchen for a nice pizza. The sad news is, once bears become used to our food, they lose their natural fear of people, resulting in more human-bear conflicts, and wildlife officials or citizens www.exploringnature.org killing our bears. he, his wife, and his daughter were constantly on the lookout for boats. Ò We had a couple of jet skies come around and they changed direction quickly,Ó Ron said, Ò we want to make sure that if somebody starts coming at us, that the boat is between whatever is coming at us and the swimmers.Ó Ò We did maneuver that way a few times, particularly there was a boat that swung around Shelburne Point and suddenly starting coming at Matt,Ó he added. Ron gunned their motorboat and got in between his son and the other watercraft. Ò I donÕ t know which direction they wouldÕ ve gone but they ended up veering off,Ó he said, Ò that was probably the biggest surprise because they kind of came out of nowhere and it was a speedboat and they were going pretty good.Ó The brother and sister made it successfully to Shelburne Point a little after 5 p.m. Jeanne remembers when Matt got to the other side: he climbed up on the beach just past the point in Shelburne and put his arms up while shouting Ò Yo Adrian I did it,Ó a line made popular from the movie Rocky. Ò They both kind of whooped as they got to the other side,Ó Jeanne said. For the future, both brother and sister arenÕ t sure if theyÕ ll set goals to swim to other points on the lake, but for now Matt summed up the feeling each of them share: Ò I think thatÕ s pretty much it, I might swim across again someday, but I wanted to see if I could make it.Ó

ie, Mike Lynch, Nancie Battaglia, Susan Bibeau and Nancy Ford. •There are more than a dozen photos of birds found along the waterways taken by noted wildlife photographer Larry Master. •There are useful maps by Saranac Lake artist Matt Paul. •And there’s the full support of the co-publisher, the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK), which is the leading publisher of outdoor resource guides in the Adirondack Park. One aspect of Ò Adirondack PaddlingÓ that sets it apart from other guidebooks is the storytelling. Brown doesnÕ t just dive into the facts; he sets up each paddle with an introduction that sums up the trip and puts it in context with the paddlersÕ experience, other recreational possibilities in the Park, and the degree of wildness and solitude one can find there. Ò For many people, pond-hopping in the St. Regis Canoe Area under sunny skies represents the summum bonum of Adirondack paddling,Ó Brown writes in the Long Pond to Hoel Pond section. Ò Each pond on the dayÕ s itinerary is a new adventure. Each has its own personality. Each is an invitation to experience nature (including loons) up close, undisturbed by motorboats. But paddling is not the only way to see the Canoe Area ...Ó Brown organizes trips in Ò Adirondack PaddlingÓ by creating four regions of the Adirondack Park: Northeast, which includes trips around Newcomb, the Tri-Lakes and Lake Champlain; Northwest, which includes trips such as Lake Lila, the Oswegatchie River and Madawaska Flow; the Southwest, which includes trips such as East Canada Creek, Blue Mountain Lake to Raquette Lake and Browns Tract Inlet; and the Southeast, which includes trips such as the Upper Schroon River, Lower Hudson River and Kunjamik River. If thereÕ s one criticism, itÕ s the lack of paddling trips in the Southeast region. To only have six trips in such a huge chunk of the Adirondack Park makes it seems like there are very few places to paddle there, which canÕ t be true, can it? Yet to whittle the endless opportunities down to 60 great paddling trips for a park the size of Vermont, choices have to be made, and Brown made 60 excellent choices. Maybe the Southeast could be better represented in later books. It was nice to see a listing of six multi-day paddling trips in the back of the book, which was mainly designed to offer day trips. Ò Adirondack PaddlingÓ is 288 pages (including the index) and retails for $24.95, a reasonable price considering paddlers will be traveling a lot with it. This is a well-designed and attractive resource, filled with color photos, and it has rightly earns its place in the stable of ADK guidebooks. It is co-published by BrownÕ s company, Lost Pond Press. As in all ADK publications, Brown takes Ò Adirondack PaddlingÓ beyond the guidebook basics of Ò who, what and whereÓ and adds the Ò how and why.Ó The reader will learn how to safely enjoy these waterways and begin to understand why itÕ s so important to protect these public lands. ItÕ s striking how many nooks and crannies of the Adirondack Park IÕ m missing by not taking these trips. IÕ ll admit, I donÕ t canoe or kayak, and IÕ ve spent most of my time in the Forest Preserve hiking and backpacking. Save for a memorable three-day canoeing trip on the Raquette River from Long Lake to Tupper Lake, IÕ m no paddler. But I found a love for paddling in this book. Ò Adirondack PaddlingÓ made we want to be a paddler. Learn more at www.LostPondPress.com or www.adk.org.

‘Adirondack Paddling’ an inspiring companion for paddlers andy@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE Ñ Phil BrownÕ s a busy guy. Not only does he work a day job as editor of the Adirondack Explorer newsmagazine and publish interesting books in his spare time, heÕ s usually found somewhere in the Adirondack Park paddling, hiking or rock climbing in familiar and unfamiliar territory. Perhaps this is one reason why outdoor enthusiasts will find his newest book, Ò Adirondack Paddling: 60 Great Flatwater Adventures,Ó such a useful resource. When reading the book, we know Brown isnÕ t just sending us to far-off corners of the Adirondack Forest Preserve without due diligence; heÕ s paddled these trips and swapped notes with Adirondack Daily Enterprise outdoor writer Mike Lynch, who also explored the 60 great flatwater adventures. Brown speaks from experience. This is the guy who won a paddling rights court case earlier this year against the Friends of Thayer Lake and the Brandreth Park Association. He paddled from Little Tupper Lake to Lake Lila Ñ including Mud Pond, Mud Pond Outlet and a portion of Shingle Shanty Brook Ñ which were posted. Accused of trespassing, Brown asserted the public deserved to paddle these routes. And the judge agreed, saying that the route is Ò navigable in factÓ and ordered that the posted signs along the waterways be taken down. Brown Ñ as an advocate for paddlers and for all who have the right to enjoy the Adirondack Forest Preserve and its navigable waterways Ñ writes Ò Adirondack PaddlingÓ with authority. And heÕ s backed by a well-established team of environmental educators, journalists and outdoor professionals. •There are breathtaking photos by Brown and other notable Adirondack photographers, such as Carl Heilman II, Mark Bow-

Speak out for those who cannot
A
cross the North Country the recent response from our readers about the charges against a Plattsburgh pet store owner for neglect and animal cruelty has shown how much we love our animals. Many of our readers were angry, concerned, and unhappy with the quality of care given to kittens at the local pet store in Plattsburgh and took to social media to air their unhappiness. Ò This is awful and makes me sick to my stomach,Ó wrote Jennifer Coupal Dwyer on The BurghÕ s Facebook page. In the case against Northern Puppies, the store owner Tammy Staley was charged with 20 counts of animal cruelty. Staley was charged for improperly caring for 18 cats, two of which were found dead in the shop. Three other kittens later died in the care of a veterinarian after being willingly surrendered to police. Two additional charges were for not providing two chow dogs, ages 2 and 7, with cages large enough to fit them. Staley was arrested after medical tests on the kittens showed the cause of death as an intestinal parasite called coccidia. Other health problems included ring worm, malnutrition, ear mites, flees, eye and respiratory infections. The strong, immediate response from the community was an indicator of just how quick society jumps to the defense of animals who cannot speak for themselves. A.J. Wells wrote on The BurghÕ s Facebook page: Ò I for one, hope that she never gets her license back to sell pets. SheÕ s not owning any responsibility for this. Her excuse is that it happened because she was away from the store. So, if your child dies when you are ill, itÕ s OK? Ah, NO, you are still responsible. Innocent animals have died and suffered due to this womanÕ s actions! Or should I say inactions?Ó The law requires that pet dealers offer a legal minimum standard of care to companion animals such as dogs and cats. Animals must be provided housing that is of adequate size and structurally sound and animals must be cared for or humanely euthanized. In the case of Northern Puppies, Staley argued that she did provide veterinarian care, but said the death of the kittens was out of her hands simply because Ò cats get sick.Ó She also said that the animals in her care were not looked after because she was away recuperating from an operation at the same time that employees were on vacation. But those excuses simply do not hold water. Yes, animals get sick, but it is up to their caregiver to follow through with a proper treatment of medicine to avoid death.
And, all small businesses deal with employees taking vacation or moving on to another job, but it is up to the owner to make sure the shop is covered Ñ especially when that shop is a pet store. Letting both employees take vacation at the same time and then scheduling an operation during that time was irresponsible, plain and simple. Clayton Smalley of Plattsburgh had a very similar opinion on The BurghÕ s Facebook page: Ò As the business owner theyÕ re still responsible. If your pets die because youÕ re not there to care for them itÕ s still your fault. If you were to hire negligent people, itÕ s still your fault. You have all responsibility for the place. Those problems didnÕ t happen overnight.Ó This pet store is also not new to controversy. A year ago, photos were posted to Facebook showing animals living in filthy conditions. At the time, picketers protested in front of the store. It is good to see people take a stand and speak out in instances of animal abuse, for a whole host of reasons. The most obvious is that they cannot speak for themselves, another is that animal abuse and cruelty is often a predecessor to other crimes like child and spousal abuse Ñ even murder. Dr. Harry Hovel, who spoke in May to a group of law enforcement officials in Essex County about investigating animal cruelty, said animal abuse can be a gateway or indicator of other problems, including cruelty to humans. Therefore it is not just important for animal lovers to be vigilant for cases of animal abuse, but all of society, Hovel pointed out. It wasnÕ t that long ago that district attorneys refused to prosecute animal abuse. Before that, cases of child and spousal abuse werenÕ t even considered a crime. But community outrage has changed that thinking, and prosecutors now take a hard stand for those who often cannot stand for themselves. Frederick Douglass once famously said: “find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed on them.Ó It was refreshing to see that people stood up against the injustice that was dealt these animals. In the end, five kittens who were 100 percent dependant on their caregiver lost their lives. If it werenÕ t for people speaking out about that, their lives would have been quietly lost in vein. DEVI MOMOT, PAUL FUHRMEISTER, and DAWN TERRICK from Twin State are three committed visionaries, actively bringing Vision2Action to life. They are committed to promoting a revitalized downtown Plattsburgh. While Twin State is not located in downtown Plattsburgh, all three know that a thriving downtown promotes a thriving North Country. Clothing and style are always topics for discussion with a big question; Do clothes make the man or woman? We agree that they certainly make the first impression! The prevailing thought Ð Ò dress the partÓ Ð take yourself seriously and others will as well. Developing a personal style will bring to life all the qualities that make you YOU. DEB and GREG SHERMAN, ALLISON GARDNER and JULIE ROSS brought great stories and advice about youthful retirement and wedding planning. Being at the Wine Company for the first time, they are adding it to their list of great places to meet friends and enjoy a glass of local wineÉ great advice! A Ò bravoÓ to LINDA OÕ BRIEN and CANDE McKEON, who stopped to give and get advice on redefining a career. Modern day work is being redefined by people returning to work after a ‘first’ retirement, going back to school, and taking leaps of faith, and that is advice that can serve us well in a variety of life situations. And a final surprise visit from RYAN BUCK, of ETS, and STEPHANIE LANGILLE, of the Press Republican, out for a
night of birthday surprises. They certainly put the naysayers of Ò nothing to do in PlattsburghÓ to shame. Being regular readers of The Burgh, BUTCH and ANDREA HOFFMAN stopped by to reconnect with an old friend from Air Force years in Spangdahlem, Germany! Stop by for FREE ADVICE, every Wednesday and First Friday from 5:30 to 7.

NCCCA to offer poster workshop By Katherine Clark
katherine@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH Ñ Combining poster design, graphic art design and advertising, the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts will host a class to create personalized travel posters. The Personalized Travel Poster Workshop will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on July 27 at the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts, 23 Brinkerhoff Street. Ò These are going to be very personal projects people are going to make from their own photos to make an impactful and inspiring piece of art,Ó said class instructor Shawna Armstrong. The class will combine elements of graphic design to show how to attract the most attention while keeping the image as subtle and beautiful as possible. Ò Posters have been huge players in history, there are posters and design all around dating back to advertise to people about far off places and politics they really play a big role in history,Ó Armstrong said. Ò ItÕ s a really great project to learn the basics of graphic design and layering without using a computer.Ó One of the goals of the class is for Armstrong to Ò teach the students all about the elements of graphic design and advertising without them knowing.Ó
Ò My area of study was graphic design in college and I really wanted to teach a class that would introduce that,Ó Armstrong said. Ò This class will be bringing in the visual balance, layout, typography, use of colors and use of space to create a clean, balanced beautiful piece of artwork they can bring home.Ó Students will bring in a photo of their choosing from a vacation or a beautiful place and will create the project using elements of advertising to grab the most attention. The projects will be handmade and students will cut out shapes and letters to create the image. Ò Ill try to direct people to use cut out (text) using bold and beautiful pieces of paper but the artist can bring whatever skill set they have to the table to create their posters,Ó said Armstrong. Ò The pieces will all be very unique, people do not have to be worried this is a class for artists at every level to try something new to highlight a place that inspires certain memories and feelings to be displayed to others through the poster.Ó The class will be for teens and adults age 15 and up. Armstrong said: Ò Keep it bold that is all part of what advertising is all about, to catch peopleÕ s attention at a glance.Ó The class is $20 per student with materials included. For more information about the class or to register call the NCCCA at 563-1604.

HELP FOR HOMEOWNERS IN FORECLOSURE NEW YORK STATE LAW REQUIRES THAT WE SEND YOU THIS NOTICE ABOUT THE FORECLOSURE PROCESS. PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY. SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME. IF YOU FAIL TO RESPOND TO THE SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT IN THIS FORECLOSURE ACTION, YOU MAY LOSE YOUR HOME. PLEASE READ THE SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT CAREFULLY. YOU SHOULD IMMEDIATELY CONTACT AN ATTORNEY OR YOUR LOCAL LEGAL AID OFFICE TO OBTAIN ADVICE ON HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE. The state encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Banking Department at 1-877-BANK-NYS (1-877-226-5697) or visit the department’s
website at WWW.BANKING.STA TE.NY.US. FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services.
