Musicians ready for Nashville in North Creek

andy@denpubs.com WEVERTOWN — The country-rock band Decadence will be playing a concert at the Wevertown Community Center Saturday, Oct. 26 as part of the spaghetti dinner benefit for Kris Harvey, a 1986 graduate of the Johnsburg Central School. Harvey has ovarian cancer ... again. While attending Adirondack Community College in Queensbury at the age of 19, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She won that battle and went into remission, but now, at the age of 45, it’s back. “She was diagnosed in July and started her treatments in August,” said Harvey’s cousin, Vicki Hunter, who is co-organizing the fundraiser with Sally Lawrence, of Wevertown, and Stacia SheehanClamp, of Ballston Spa. Hunter and Harvey are the same age, and both currently live in Greenwich. Harvey has worked for Tribune Media Services in Glens Falls since she was in her early 20s and is a desktop publisher. She’s single and therefore only has one income to help with the bills. “When she was diagnosed, the medical bills began pouring in,” Hunter said. “She has insurance, but it doesn’t cover everything, unfortunately. So I said to her, ‘Concentrate on CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

Chamber Director Lisa Salamon was the moderator. The format was simple. Candidates were allowed a maximum of 3 minutes for an introductory speech, explaining their qualifications, and then answered questions from audience members, who filled out question cards before taking their seats. Not all candidates stayed under the 3-minute time limit. For the sake of fairness, we have transcribed the candidates’ first 3 minutes here. Any comments made

NORTH CREEK
Ad’k Council reports on State of the Park
MINERVA — Town officials here held an emergency meeting Saturday, Oct. 19 to authorize lowering the water level of Lake Minerva in order to inspect the dam. “The reason we considered it an emergency meeting is with the fall coming, we’re running out of weather to be able to do any kind of work,” Minerva Town Supervisor Sue Montgomery Corey said on Oct. 22. “So if we do get in there and there is a need
for a repair, we want to have the time to be able to do it responsibly.” About a year ago, staff from the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) inspected the Minerva Lake dam, and they had some concerns. “They asked us to do a more detailed inspection with our own engineer because they believed that they were seeing some seepage that they really hadn’t seen before,” Corey said. In the past year, the town has had three engineers look at the dam, and they’ve been monitoring the lake level throughout the summer. Now town officials are working with John Carr from Blue Mountain
Engineering in Bangor. “His take on it was that it needed to be explored, but he does not feel it is as worrisome as perhaps some other people might think,” Corey said. Therefore, town officials decided not to inspect the dam during the summer, when locals and tourists visit the town beach and campground. A draw-down of the lake during the warmer months could have been devastating to local businesses. “Minerva Lake is absolutely critical to our summer economy, and it was very frightening to many CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

monica; Fats Kaplin (Mark Knopfler, Garth Brooks, Waylon Jennings); Charles Treadway on organ (The Dynamites); GRAMMY winner Charlie Chadwick and Roger Prescott.
Perhaps the best brothers are the ones who choose themselves. Few people get to choose their siblings, but the Mulch Brothers are the exception. Mark Mulch and David Daniel Mulch both made the bold move to Nashville to follow their dreams and make music together. The Mulch Brothers have recently signed with Memphis based EFG Entertainment Group and will be releasing their debut EP for the label in September entitled “Next of Kin.” Produced with Jim Kimball (Reba, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw), the new songs return the band to their hard rockin’ southern country rock roots. The boys are excited about getting back out on the road and playing all their new songs live for their fans and friends all around the country.
D.W. Dasher is a lifelong musician and songwriter. His music is unique yet classic in style. His baritone voice delivers power and emotion heavily influenced by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. He is a founding member of the Nashville Rock trio Mellow Down Easy, while maintaining a solo career in the Americana/ Country/Folk genre. In the spring of 2005, he was given the opportunity to work on a county album with close friends Kent Goodson (George Jones) and Patrick Boone, co-writing and recording with one of Dasher’s favorite rock vocalists Jeff Keith from the platinum selling band Tesla. He has toured extensively since 2005 in the United States and abroad. In 2009 Dasher celebrated the release of both Mellow Down Easy’s critically acclaimed “Cosmisutra” album and his debut solo album “Long Road Now” featuring members of the late Waylon Jennings’ band. D.W.’s new album, released in 2012 includes 10 new songs written, performed, and produced by D.W. himself. The album will also include a bonus track written by legendary songwriter Roger Alan Wade.

Chelsea Cavanaugh
Country singer/songwriter Chelsea Cavanaugh continues to electrify audiences and inspire fans with her catchy melodies and heartfelt lyrics. At just 17 years old, Chelsea has shared the stage with top national country artists and performed for thousands. Her 11-song debut album “Simply” features top artists from New York and Nashville.
Renee Wahl
Renée Wahl writes intelligent, literate songs from the heart. Working both on her own and with Roger Prescott (Trainwreck Ghost, the Texacala Jones Band), Wahl displays a talent for creating and inhabiting characters and moments in the fashion of Lyle Lovett and Townes Van Zandt. Combine this with a voice that finds the soft parts of your soul and insinuates itself there and it’s easy to understand why Wahl has been compared to Maria McKee (Lone Justice). Her album Cumberland Moonshine establishes Wahl as a serious player in Nashville. It doesn’t hurt that Wahl is backed by one of the best supporting casts in Nashville. Cumberland Moonshine features performances from Bryan Owings on drums (Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Buddy And Julie Miller); guitarist Kenny Vaughan (Marty Stuart); Pat Bergerson (Shelby Lynne, Wynonna Judd, Lyle Lovett, Suzy Boggus) on guitar and har-

Decadence
Decadence is a Roots Rock band fronted by Jennifer Gadway and Katy Cole since 1999. A true powerhouse duo, they often classify themselves as “Real women, singing real music.” Combining Gadway’s powerful country voice with Cole’s folk and blues influence, these two unique voices come together to create a sound that is fresh and original. Their their debut album “Love Loud” released in June 2012 and has enjoyed local, national and international airplay. Their sophomore album Tales From the Mountains has received rave reviews from some of the best in the business and has opened many doors for the band, including playing shows with Chase Rice, Drew Baldridge, Lainey Wilson and Shooter Jennings.

Johnsburg board handles land issues, accepts resignation By Andy Flynn
andy@denpubs.com SODOM — The Johnsburg Town Board handled a number of issues at their Oct. 15 meeting in the Scout Hall, including land acquisition next to the town sand pit, the town budget and a resignation on the Planning Board. When contacted Oct. 21, Johnsburg Town Supervisor Ron Vanselow said Town Board members have set a public hearing on the 2014 budget for 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 at the Wevertown Community Center. A detailed story on the budget will be printed in next week’s issue of the News Enterprise. In the meantime, people may download a PDF version of the preliminary budget from the town’s website (www.johnsburgny.com). “Depending on public input, we could approve it the same night,” Vanselow said. “But we’re looking at some amendments that revolve around employee insurance. If we switch ... there could be some reallocation of funds within that budget.” Town Board members also discussed funds associated with cleaning up the Denton property on the Goodman Road. “A couple years ago, we got a court order to get the place cleaned up, and they didn’t follow through on it, so the court allowed the town to go in and clean up the property,” Vanselow said. “That’s simply taking the cost of the cleanup so far and levying it against the property taxes.” The EMS property on Peaceful Valley Road at the old pallet mill was on the Oct. 15 agenda.

“They want to move their building there, but the zoning would not allow a public service building like that,” Vanselow said. “We could either have granted the Johnsburg EMS immunity from zoning or — what actually happened — was they got a variance from the Zoning Board of Appeals. So they’ll be able to build there if they want to.” ZBA members made the decision on the EMS site during their Oct. 7 meeting. Town Board members accepted the resignation of Planning Board member William Moos and appointed Planning Board alternate — Gretchen Millington — to replace him. The town will now advertise for a replacement for the alternate position, along with two vacancies on the ZBA. Millington starts immediately. The next Planning Board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28 at the Tannery Pond Community Center (Lower Lobby). Town Board members learned that the Occupancy Tax Committee has met and made upgrades to the criteria for applicants. Applications and instructions for the Occupancy Tax Funding Request For Tourism Promotion of the Town of Johnsburg are currently online at www.johnsburgny.com. Applications must be sent by mail, in person or electronically to Cherie@johnsburgny. com. The deadline is Nov. 15.
The Town Board also authorized the supervisor to proceed with purchasing a small piece of property adjacent to the town’s sandpit to mine material for treating the roads during the winter. The acquisition would give the town an extra year’s worth of material. Earlier in the year, town officials finalized the purchase of a piece of property from the state of New York. “We’re looking at reserves that may last four or five years,” Vanselow said. The next meeting of the Johnsburg Town Board will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 at the Wevertown Community Center.

Adirondack Council chief discusses State of the Park
By Keith Lobdell
EB: How do you balance the needs of public use and conservation in the Essex Chain Lakes? WJ: For me, the stronger economic future for the park and the communities is in protecting those natural resources that people want to come and see. When you open it to the public, the challenge is that the state has not been very good at saying OK, there’s only this many people allowed to go in there. We wanted to try and come down with a very balanced approach.
keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Adirondack Council Executive Director Willie Janeway met with members of the Denton Publications Editorial Board Oct. 17 to talk about current issues a day after the environmental group released its annual State of the Park report. Members of the Denton staff were Managing Editor John Gereau, Assistant Managing Editor Andy Flynn, Times of Ti Editor Fred Herbst and Valley News Editor Keith Lobdell. They asked Janeway questions about the plan, and the following are his answers. Editorial Board: You said you support Prop 4 and Prop 5 on the ballot because they follow the Adirondack Council’s criteria for land swaps. What is that criteria? Willie Janeway: There are really six points to our criteria for a land swap. The lands that came out cannot be critical or unique ecologically. The lands coming in should be ecologically superior to the land that is going out. It should not establish a precedent. There should be a specific use. It should be for an important community benefit, and you do not have a community if you do not have jobs. Also, it has to be a win-win for the Forest Preserve and for the community. He added, “NYCO has been challenging and we have not always seen eye-to-eye, but we laid out our principles and said if you meet these, then we will support it. It is going to be a big lift because people see it as a land sale for $1 million. I wish it were called the Jay Mountain Wilderness Expansion Proposition instead because that is a more representative title.” EB: One of your consistent “thumbs down” themes concerned the changing of the DEC permit allowing Essex County to begin work on Little Whiteface before a study on the Bicknell’s thrush mating patterns was completed. Why was that a concern? WJ: The concern was more about the process, and the issue was the last-minute modification of the permit. Everyone had come together, and we thought there was a deal. What happened then undermines the ability of everyone to

come together.
port for these kinds of conversations.
EB: What are ways to secure infrastructure within the Park without tampering with the natural habitat? WJ: We have gone into Jay and looked at the buyouts and talked about specific things that we as a Council will say, these are things that you will not have to worry about us commenting on. When community groups and environmentalists go to Albany and they go together, it turns heads.
EB: Is there a responsible way to create a series of connected snowmobile trails to maintain and promote the industries’ importance to the economy? WJ: I hope so. I can stay optimistic about this. We have been very public that even though we sued the state over the Unit Management Plan, we do support the idea of connected trails. You manage wilderness, but you do not just lock it up and set it aside. I think that we can find places for communities where we can connect.
EB: You give a “thumbs up” to a merger between two school districts. Is that something you support throughout the park? WJ: We believe communities should talk with each other and look for opportunities to share services. We also realize there is a narrow set of communities, and the distances are long in the park and the schools are a focal part of the communities. We want to facilitate and offer sup-
EB: The whole locals versus downstate thing, what do you tell local residents when they ask, “Whose park is this, anyway?” WJ: It’s everybody’s. It belongs to all of the people of the state, and the residents of the park have a special position. As residents, they get the benefits of living in a place with clean water and clean air, but there are responsibilities and obligations that come with that as well.
EB: What do you see as the vision for the Park, short term and long term? WJ: My hope would be if we can focus on what the Park should look like in 2050, and then work backwards from that, it is going to be a lot easier to resolve the next round of questions. What is the real vision here and how do we make some bigger changes? The politics always drives you to smaller, incremental changes, but if you just do that, the Adirondack Park continues to struggle economically and environmentally. EB: What is the biggest challenge facing the Adirondack Park? WJ: Missing the opportunity that we now have and if politics or ideology will get in the way of caring about the park. If we can’t, we will have missed a chance to finish the park in a way that works for everyone. I think that Gov. Andrew Cuomo is really concerned about moving the park forward. He likes it up here and he does not ignore the Adirondacks. With this governor, there is an opportunity that has not existed for years. EB: What are the main themes to the report? WJ: The theme of this report is people are now talking and working together. There are a lot of successes, but they are moderate. If we can have these discussions and disagreements yet still talk and work together, it shows how much the Adirondack community has changed. At one of the first meetings I attended, a person started talking about being upset over the APA boathouse restrictions and I thought, “Here we go with a get rid of the APA rant.” But at the end of his statement, he asked if we could help him work with them to change these. That was refreshing.

Warren County Municipal Center turns 50 years old By Thom Randall
Krogmann recalled the lengthy and influential career of Bartlett, who received a standing ovation. Hogan noted it was Bartlett who urged her to become a prosecutor because it would fulfill her career goal of helping people in distressing circumstances. Krogmann told the audience that if he ever had doubts when making legal decisions on the bench, he would look at Bartlett’s portrait on the courtroom wall and think, “What would Dick Bartlett do?” During this courtroom visit, Queensbury seventh-grader Piper Orr re-enacted Flora Sexton, a historic figure from Hague.

Judge Barlett reflects
In 1963, the new Municipal Center was not just a showplace, it was very functional, Bartlett said. “The county departments and agencies had been scattered all over the place, but after the center was built, they were now in one place.” Before 1963, the county courts and jail were in Lake George, the family court was in Glens Falls, and the welfare offices were in Warrensburg, he recalled. “The center was visually pleasing, and it brought a sense of unity to county government.” The idea to build the center had its detractors, Bartlett recalled, including opposition spokesman, Fred Bascom, a prominent Glens Falls lawyer. “It was strongly contested at the time as an unnecessary expenditure,” Bartlett said. cording to vintage news reports, county leaders had proposed to tear down the old county courthouse in Lake George and build a larger, taller structure on the site — but doing so would have cost $500,000 more than constructing a new county center on its undeveloped exurban site. “Looking back, we made the right decision to build this new center,” Bartlett said. During the ceremonies, former Warren County Clerk Caryl Clark also recalled how she and her mother Jeanne McNeary had fought to save the old county courthouse from destruction. The structure, now on the national and state registers of historic places, is now a celebrated landmark in Lake George Village. Clark’s daughter, Stephanie Merrill, recalled how she, too, had attended the municipal center dedication ceremonies — at age six. “The building was impressive, overwhelm-
ing, she said, recalling how in the 1963 event her eyes fixed on the large emblem on the front of the building depicting Revolutionary War hero Joseph Warren, the county’s namesake. Bartlett recalled how he had presided over one of the first cases held in the new county courthouse. It was a suit over patent rights involving a local catheter company — the longest trial at that time in the county’s history. Twice on Friday, county District Attorney Kate Hogan conducted tours of the county courts. In the main county courtroom, she introduced Bartlett and three of the county’s other judges, County Judge John Hall, Family Court Judge Timothy Breen, and Supreme Court Justice David Krogmann.
At 10 a.m. Friday, a quartet of singers from Queensbury High School opened the monthly county Board of Supervisors meeting by singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” as a salute to the anniversary. Also, county Sheriff Bud York conducted tours of the Public Safety Building — north of the main Municipal Center, where other county residents had taken self-guided tours, watching county employees accomplish their work. Early afternoon Friday, two large containers of helium-filled balloons bearing an anniversary logo were uncapped in front of the county court. Releasing the balloons were former Town of Chester board member Marge Swan and Kevin Geraghty — and the red globes soared up into the sky to the applause of several dozen people gathered. Kevin Geraghty offered his thoughts. “The county’s municipal center has withstood the test of time,” he said, noting 2013 was also the year of the county’s bicentennial. “I’m proud to be serving the county during this historic year.” Marge Swan — whose husband Howard Swan served on the county Board of Supervisors when the municipal center was dedicated — smiled as she exchanged memories with others. “I thank God I’m here to participate in this,” she said. “It’s just wonderful.”

QUEENSBURY — Warren County leaders and citizens gathered Friday Oct. 18 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Warren County Municipal Center, recognized nationally for its suburban-style campus ambiance when it was built in 1963. Festive balloons were launched, tours of the complex were conducted, and people gathered to share not only a birthday cake but memories — including those who were active in local government a half-century ago. Treated as a guest of honor was former state Assemblyman, judge and attorney Richard Bartlett, now 87, who had been one of the luminaries presiding over the dedication ceremonies for the Municipal Center 50 years ago. In the era the county Municipal Center was built, Bartlett was chosen to serve as the state’s first Chief Administrative Judge. Despite his duties around the state, Bartlett kept his chambers in the county Municipal Center, he said soon after cutting the celebratory cake Friday with county Board of Supervisors Chairman Kevin Geraghty, longtime Chestertown notable Marjorie Swan and Queensbury councilman John Strough.

Proposed land swaps make sense By Teresa Sayward
Retired NYS Assemblywoman
I
write this to encourage everyone to VOTE YES on two very important Constitutional Amendments. The proposed Amendments will appear on the back of the ballot on Election Day as Proposition 4 and Proposition 5.
Proposition 4:
State Agencies, Senator Little, Adirondack Council, Adirondack Mountain Club, Residents Committee to Protect the Adirondacks and the Chair of Hamilton County’s Board of Supervisors and I worked together to resolve this longstanding title dispute issue in Hamilton County. Over the years both NY State and the people engaged in lawsuits attempting to resolve titles with mixed results. This process is costly and time consuming. The land in question has been occupied for over 100 years. The Fire Company, school properties and private businesses have contested titles. Clearly, the land is neither forest preserve nor is it private property. The Legislature concluded that it is equitable and appropriate for the state to relinquish their claim and in exchange the people will make payment to the state and the state will purchase and incorporate hundreds of acres of pristine land into the forest preserve. The Legislature found that the title disputes constitute a unique situation found nowhere else in New York State. This dispute dates back to the 1800’s and is supported by
both Environmental Groups and State Agencies.
Proposition 5:
State Agencies, Adirondack Environmental Groups, NYCO, Senator Little and I worked collectively to resolve this important economic issue. NYCO’s mineral at Oak Hill will be exhausted soon. NYCO operates in the Town’s of Willsboro and Lewis, providing employees with good wages, medical and retirement benefits. Employees are volunteer fire fighters, EMT’s, soccer coaches, and their children attend our school. NYCO provides critical tax revenue to local governments and school districts, reducing the tax burden of taxpayers. NYCO does business with businesses from Plattsburgh to Albany. NYCO supports not-for-profit organizations and our local communities. Adirondack Communities depend on tourism. That’s good, but if you don’t own the business you make minimum wage. NYCO provides over 100 jobs countywide. The State will allow NYCO to take 200 acres for mining purposes. In return for the temporary use of this land, NYCO will give the State Forest Preserve 1,500 acres. Everyone will benefit from the addition of this new Forest Preserve land. The Amendment is in keeping with the original intent of the Adirondack Park Act which is to balance environmental protection with economic need. Both State Agencies and the two major Adirondack Environmental Groups support this Amendment.
QUICK VIEW STATEWIDE PROPOSITIONS •Proposition 1: Authorizing Casino Gaming •Proposition 2: Additional Civil Service Credit for Veterans with Disabilities Certified Post-Appointment •Proposition 3: Exclusion of Indebtedness Contracted for Sewage Facilities •Proposition 4: Settling Disputed Title in the Forest Preserve •Proposition 5: In Relation to a Land Exchange in the State Forest Preserve with NYCO Minerals, Inc. •Proposition 6: Increasing Age until which Certain State Judges Can Serve

Meet the candidates from page 1
Ron Vanselow
Ron Vanselow is the current town supervisor running for re-election. First of all, I’d like to welcome you here and thank Lisa for her efforts and the others involved in setting this up. Most of you probably know me. I spent about two decades working in various volunteer services for the town, 13 years on the Planning Board, seven years on EMS and finally on the Town Board in 2008. And when Mr. Goodspeed opted not to run in 2011, I decided to run because I saw there was a real need to change direction in this town. There were a few core issues. One was highway work, maintaining buildings and taking care of our parks and other grounds, also the highway aspect of our budget. So I worked to change some of the fiscal priorities in the budget. All in all, I think we’ve got a pretty good start. We’ve got a lot of work in the town buildings, lots of work in the town parks. We’re always wrestling with the cemeteries, but I think we’ve got a winning formula for this coming year. One thing that I really wanted to do was to make the office of supervisor available to the public in this town. I started out by moving the office of supervisor right to the front of the town hall, so my handsome face is the first thing you see when you walk in the building. And if I don’t scare you off, I’m there to help you. For years you’ve seen me in all kinds of events around town: festivals, concerts, all kinds of fun things to do like parades. And one reason I go to these things is because they are fun. Another reason I go to these things is because that’s where the people are. I’m often stopped and asked about various issues in the town, and I try to give people answers. I try to assist them as I can. I think I’ve made a change in how the office of the supervisor is done for the people of this town.
Curtis Richards
Curtis Richards is running for supervisor. I live up on Goodman Road in Johnsburg. I graduated from JCS in 1981. I’ve been a self-employed logger for the past 31 years. For a couple of years, I was the highway superintendent, from 2006 to 2008. They were trying times. I’m sure Dan (Hitchcock) can relate to that position. The reason I am running is I want to serve the people, and I feel that the town needs strong leadership in the years to follow ahead of us. They need someone to listen to and to field their ideas and to take responses from everybody. I feel like I have a strong tie to this town because I’ve lived here my entire life. The first supervisor in the town of Johnsburg was John J. Richards. I’m a seventh generation Richards from him, so that makes me feel kind of warm and good about the town and the community. I remember going to school here and going to the youth program and using the swimming hole. Actually, I learned to swim there, so I know what that’s like to have that opportunity. My qualifications are that I’ve owned my own business for 31 years, successful for the most part. Also, I was in the superintendant position for two or three years, so I know how politics works. I know how the system works. I know how it is dealing with people, working with people, and I enjoy it. At this time in my life, I’m not doing the logging so much, so I have the time to put forward to run the town and to help people. My main goals are to put out a monthly newsletter of what’s going on in town. I know we used to do that. We haven’t recently. Just so the town people know where the money’s being spent every month and the kind of projects we’re working on. I have spoken to people who literally didn’t know we did some bike trails this summer over at the Ski Bowl, which turned out very well. But we need to get our message out there a little bit better. At the same time, we’ve had businesses that may have been in that business that left just as the mountain bike trails got established. Now it’s kind of hard to rent a bike. We need to open up communication skills and work better with different sections of the government and the community members. I’d like to find a way to find a home for our parks department. They were kind of shoved aside a few years back into the town building. I’m sure it’s worked for them, but I think the parks department needs a place of their own that they can call home and they can work out of and better take care of the parks, maybe hire some extra people. (This was the end of the 3-minute time limit. He spoke for another minute.)
Katharine “Katie” Nightingale
Katie Nightingale is a town councilor and is running for re-election. My name is Katie Nightingale. If you haven’t seen my signs around town, they do say “Katharine,” but I respond to either one of those names. I’ve lived in North River since 1992, and I recently moved up to Harvey Road. I’ve always enjoyed living here in this community. My background careerwise is I’m a hydrogeologist. I work as needed in Clifton Park for a small environmental company which has done a lot of the groundwater work associated in North Creek. Over the years, I’ve worked for several different companies in the area. And I’ve also done a lot of volunteer work for different organizations, including the Whitewater Derby, the Library Board and a bunch of other different things. And because of that, I feel like I’ve really got to know a lot of different people in town and the community. And I try to really listen to what people are looking for, what they want to see happen in town. Because of the business and community thing, I think I’ve been a pretty good asset to the Town Board. I was appointed in January 2012 when Mr. Vanselow became supervisor. I took his position. And then I ran last fall in a special election. And so this would be my own term right now, my first four-year term. Some of the things I’ve been working on since I’ve been on the Town Board are Riverfront Park and the new streetscape pro-
www.newsenterprise.org gram. I am a proponent of the Nessles’ work at Ski Bowl Park. What I’d like to see happen in the future is that those projects move forward at a good rate and that they are complete and not just dragging in the future. Other things I’d really like to see is that when the community is concerned about issues in town, they can come to me. I feel like I’m available. And I also like to help educate people why things are done certain ways. So if you really feel you’ve been done wrong by the Town Board, if I can help you understand why something happened, I feel I can do that.
Bob Nessle
Bob Nessle is running for town council. I live on South Johnsburg Road. About two and a half months from today, and 50 years ago, I came to North Creek to ski. Well, not to ski that day but to visit the opening of Gore Mountain Ski Center. It turned out to be rainy and messy and icy, and I didn’t put my skis on, but I did have a chance to talk to the Ski Patrol leader. And he needed to develop a Ski Patrol. And I said, “Well, I’ve got some experience in that.” He didn’t take me out and check up on my skiing, but I told him I had some credentials from ski patrolling in the Rocky Mountains. Anyway, the next day I was back up to Gore Mountain Ski Center as a professional, at that time anyway, a professional Ski Patrol, which meant I was going to get paid, so I had my first job in the town of Johnsburg. Also when I came I brought a lot of baggage with me because I had come from Wyoming and I got very interested in politics out there. I was a student at the University of Wyoming and completed a degree in civil engineering. Actually, believe it or not, I was a registered Republican in Wyoming. And the reason was that in southern Wyoming, all across the UP (Union Pacific) Railroad, everybody was a Democrat. And I said, “Hey, come on. You gotta have a little competition here.” So I became a Republican. But I got smart when I came to Johnsburg, and I went back to my roots as a Democrat. It’s been great living in Johnsburg. I’m not interested in leaving, although sometimes Kelly says, “We gotta go someplace else.” Our kids are on the West Coast and here and there. But Johnsburg is a great place to live. It’s got everything that I need anyway. It’s got a great river, a wonderful mountain. Skiing, lots of snow, usually anyway. And mountains to climb not too far away, places to canoe. I got very interested in canoeing. If Katie (Nightingale) can continue to keep the Hudson River Whitewater Derby alive, I have four more years and I will have paddled consecutively for 50 years in the Whitewater Derby. (This was the end of the 3-minute time limit. He spoke for another 5 minutes.)
Arnold Stevens
Arnold Stevens is a town councilor and is running for re-election. So the question is, “Why am I carrying this great big book around?” Well, it happens to be a dictionary, and you know, you can find some interesting things if you look in a dictionary at times. One of the things that I found interesting in a dictionary was as I was looking down through the words, I found the word “dysfunction.” And then it goes on down to “dysfunctional,” which is basically described as “not operating normally or properly” and interestingly enough, it comes from two Latin roots, the first being “dysfunc” meaning Albany, N.Y., and “tional”meaning Washington, D.C. Now no one needs to be a genius, and no one needs to be a prophet in order to realize that both of these seats of government are a dysfunctional mess. The representatives we send to these two cities seem to be disconnected from those that they represent. They seem to be unresponsive to the needs and the desires of those that they represent. They seem to be unavailable. Just go ahead and try to contact any of your state or federal representatives. So if we go from there and switch on over to the letter “E” we can find a word over here called “efficient.” Described as “achieving maximum productivity with minimum wasted effort or expense.” It comes from a Latin root once again — “e” meaning local and “fficient” meaning town government. Unlike national or state government, where the representatives may be disconnected, unresponsive or unavailable, as a town council member, answerable to the local residents, to all of you people here tonight, you should be all three of these. You should be connected to the folks which you represent. You should be responsive to the needs and the desires of those people that you represent. And you should be available to listen to the concerns that the local folks have. If I am elected to the position of town council member, I will continue to be connected, responsive and available to all the residents of our town. (This was the end of the 3-minute time limit. He spoke for another 30 seconds.)
Sharalee Falzerano
Sharalee Falzerano is running for town clerk. I live in North River. I run a successful bed and breakfast that was renovated. It is a restored house from the 1870s. It’s running successfully, which I’m proud to say, which means not in the red. And it’s seasonal, so that’s a tough job. I have two children. My son lives in Maine, and he’s a school teacher. My daughter lives in Sacramento on the other side of the country, and she’s a librarian. I have worked many jobs, like a lot of people here. You may have seen me in the library, checking out your books; working at the Depot Museum with the director; and working with lots of volunteers. I have worked at the post office ... And I run a historic walking tour business in town. It’s a no-brainer. It’s fun, it doesn’t cost me anything, and I have a true love for history in the area. I’m a volunteer at the Johnsburg Historical Society, since 2002. I volunteer for the Depot Museum. For my qualifications — I’m running for town clerk — I worked for the county clerk for 13 years down in Westchester. I worked under the county clerk in the records and archives division, also information technology. My main job there was preserving and making available records that were generated by the clerk’s office. I was trained in records management and digitiza-
News Enterprise - 7 tion, lots of scanning of records, similar to those we have in our town clerk’s office. I’m running under the Bull Moose Party for various reasons, one being Theodore Roosevelt, Johnsburg. He has his connection to the train, so that was fun. And his importance in our national parks. He opened park land. Also I’m running under the Bull Moose Party because I seem to stray on both sides of Democrat and Conservative, and the Bull Moose Party seemed to have covered that for me. One of the number one things that Theodore Roosevelt was running for was for women’s issues — suffrage, women’s equal pay, health insurance, child labor — all things I love. (This was the end of the 3-minute time limit. She spoke for another 15 seconds.)
Jo Ann Smith
Jo Ann Smith is running for town clerk. Hi my name is Jo Ann Smith. Actually on my signs it says “Jo A Smith” because that is my proper name. I’ve been the deputy town clerk for four years. I worked with Bill (Rawson) from 2009 to present. I’m also the deputy registrar. That was starting in 2010 to present. I also work in the bookkeeping office with Sherry Williams. I’m also planning and zoning secretary. I’m also the town historian. I’m running underneath Republican and Independent, underneath the Rose Party. And I am running for town clerk. I was born here. I’ve always lived here on the Garnet Lake Road. My older son is 22. He works local. My other son is 15 and he goes to Johnsburg School. My husband has his own business at home. I’ve been in that office. I’ve heard people say that they would like to see this and like to see that. I’d like to move forward and be able to do that for these people. One thing is doing the taxes. The biggest question is, “How come we can’t pay with our credit card?” I’d like to go to that next step and set it up so people can go online and pay with their credit card. Bill’s been awesome. He is a great guy to work with, and I’m really going to miss him when he retires.

So far, the treatments seem to be working. “We’re all positive and hopeful,” Hunter said. “We’re just trying to minimize the damage financially once this is over for her.” For the benefit, people can eat spaghetti, listen to Decadence, and visit with Harvey, who will be the guest of honor. “It’s a non-treatment week for her, so she will be there and hopefully she will be feeling well,” Hunter said. “It should be a nice show of sup-

A town-owned beach, playground and campground now line the shore, along with private homes. The beach is named for Francis Donnelly, who first became town supervisor in 1934 and served until his death in 1980. “It’s a critical piece of water,” Corey said. “I tell people Minerva Lake is our soul. “The school is our heart, the lake is our soul.”

Meet the candidates from page 7
Vincent Schiavone
Vincent Schiavone is the town justice and is running for re-election. I’ve been town justice for a year. I was appointed by the board last November and immediately went off to judicial school in Albany. I completed all my judicial requirements. I’ve also added an additional 12 other credits beyond that. My background is law enforcement and the criminal justice system. I’ve been in for 38 years. I’m a longtime law enforcement officer. I retired in 2002 as executive officer in my department. I’ve obtained a master’s degree in criminal justice. I’m also obtaining a title of professor of criminal justice from a college in Westchester County, Mercy College. I’m also certified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a nationwide criminal justice instructor. My entire life has been involved in the criminal justice system. That’s what I do. That’s what I enjoy doing. That’s what I believe in. But town justice is a very unique position. It deals with people’s lives on an everyday basis. People who come before the court’s lives can be altered and changed by a simple decision that I would make. So without compassion and understanding and experience, it is very difficult to deal with multitudes of different types of problems. I deal with vehicle and traffic matters. I deal with crimes. I deal with zoning ordinances. I deal with civil claims, you know kinda ‘Judge Judy’ type stuff, and I find myself putting more and more time into the office. I believe in the office. I believe in what it’s supposed to do. A judge can change a person’s life in about 1 minute. A person comes before the court charged with a crime, the decision becomes mine. That’s not a decision you make lightly. That’s a decision you think about. It’s time understanding who that individual is, not just he committed a crime, let’s punish him, but where did he come from, what’s he about, is he a family man. There are many, many aspects of being a justice that are not understood. I have the training, I have the time, I have the ability. I retired in 2002, and we’ve lived here in Johnsburg. We’ve had a home here since 1991. We live on Washerhill Road. My wife is also a very experi-
enced legal person. She’s managed law offices in Westchester County for most of her life. She’s my able assistant because in the town, I do not have a court clerk. When I took over the court in November of 2012, there was a backlog of cases that hadn’t been resolved, and over the past year I’ve brought in over $29,000 in uncollected fines. I do that every month. The job is supposed to be 20 hours a week because it’s called a part-time job, but it’s not a part-time job. It’s a job you go to every day. Every day you go to you answer the mail. (This was the end of the 3-minute time limit. He spoke for another 30 seconds.)
James Haker
James Haker is running for town justice. I’m James “Jake” Haker. You can see my signs around. Jake is a name I picked up when I was I don’t know, about 13, 14 years old in Boy Scouts. I come from a law enforcement background. I have 29 and a half years in law enforcement. I started with the New York State Park Police, then went to the Albany County Sheriff’s Department, then I served 29 years with the Town of Bethlehem Police Department just south of the city of Albany. My last seven years I was a sergeant in charge of the midnight shift, and I was also in charge of the Bethlehem Police substation. I have an associate’s degree in criminal justice, and I also have an associate’s degree in electrical construction maintenance. I attended Russell Sage College for criminal justice. I graduated from the Zone 5 basic police officer school, and I’ve also attended a four-week course in police supervision and numerous other police courses. Employment in this area, I’ve been with Whitewater Challengers as a raft guide for 28 years. I’ve also worked at Garner Hill Lodge as a shuttle bus driver, and I worked for the Upper Hudson River Railroad on various tasks there, and I work at Gore Mountain as a lift operator in the winter. When I retired from the Bethlehem Police Department in 2007, I took a job with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation as an assistant forest ranger, a job that I really enjoy doing. As for why I want to do this job, I feel that my law enforcement back-
ground, I’ve served the town, and I feel I’d like to be able to serve the town in that capacity.
Howard Tucker Sr.
Howard Tucker Sr. is running for town justice. My name is Howard Tucker, but most people know me by Sonny, or the guy with the red hat. I’ve talked to probably about 100 people in this town, all of them younger than you folks, and they all feel very discontented, but, as you can see, none of then showed up here. I was asked to run for town justice because I feel that I can make a difference in people’s lives. I have very little qualifications for the job, other than I have a good sense of judgement, and I am a fair person. I’ve lived in the town of Johnsburg my whole life. I was born in Glens Falls hospital, and I was brought back to the house I live in right now. I live just 200 feet down the road. I attended school in Warrensburg, because they changed the school zone lines and we ended up going to school in Warrensburg instead of Johnsburg. We missed it by half a mile. In tenth grade I quite school. That was 1979, and joined the military because I needed a way out. I was bullied so badly in school that I wanted to leave. So I joined the U.S. Army and became an aviation mechanic, and in the three years that I was stationed with the 101st Air-
Halloween Fun Festival & Parade in Indian Lake
INDIAN LAKE — The Indian Lake Volunteer Fire Dept. and Auxiliary and the Town of Indian Lake are joining forces again this year to offer A Halloween Fun Festival & Parade on Thursday, Oct. 31 from 3:10 to 5 p.m. The festivities will kick-off at 3:10 p.m. with the Annual Halloween Parade. From 3:30 to 5 p.m. the festivities continue at Byron Park, everyone is encouraged to join in on the many fun activities planned. These activities will include a Haywagon Ride, A Haunted Trail, Cookie & Cupcake Decorating, plus the ILVFD Auxiliary will be providing hot dogs, chili and drinks free for the kids. October 26, 2013 borne I did many correspondence courses because I had a craving for learning, because I was a country boy to the max. I mean I never left the town of Johnsburg, except to go to school. So, my dream was to become an air marshal. That’s why I studied aviation when I went in the military. I prepared helicopters, so I took a lot of correspondence courses. If anyone here has been in the military, there’s no courses you can’t take, and they’re all free, which is great. So I studied law, air law, which actually has nothing to do with what we’re doing here today, but it does show you fairness. That’s one of the main things I learned from it was to be fair to people. You don’t judge ’em. You don’t judge where they come from. You do not judge the conditions they are in because some day you might be in those same conditions. I met my wife when I was 12 years old. We got married in 1982. We’ve been married for 31 years, and she’s from the town of Warrensburg. We have three kids. One is an adult and lives in Warrensburg and now has our first grandchild, and I have two daughters in Johnsburg School. I got out of the service in 1985 and apprenticed to be a carpenter, which is an honorable profession. (This was the end of the 3-minute time limit. He spoke for another 1 minute and 35 seconds.)
