seth@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK Ñ The Tannery Pond Community Center in North Creek has been a community icon for more than 10 years. Prior to hiring their first executive director in July of 2012 the center was run through the generosity of volunteers throughout the community. In recent years the center has built a strong and vital board and established TPCCA as the primary lead partner working in cooperation with participating partners, Our Town Theatre Group and Upper Hudson Musical Arts. In 2002, a group of concerned parents and citizens got together and established the Teenagers Only Program. The program offers teenagers an opportunity to participate in biweekly activities. These events range from workshops to movie nights, dances, coffeehouse and open mics, rafting trips and other opportunities for teens to maximize socialization skills. In 2013 the center launched its first ever season of events, focusing on a vast collection of exceptional music programs including classical, jazz, swing, folk, contemporary as well as drama plays and presentations for all ages. This year, officials of the center have announced an even more diverse list of events. TheyÕ ll continue to offer a mixture of exceptional music programs including classical, rock, Brazilian jazz, world, the American song book and much more. Movies, plays and a wide variety of presentations will also be offered throughout the year.

On Saturday, April 12 at noon behind Minerva Central School, It’s About Thyme Farm will host its annual Easter Egg Hunt. The event is free to all, and there will be thousands of eggs to find, baskets and flower door prizes, for adults as well as children. All ages are welcome. You’re never too old for fun. Don’t forget the jelly bean count and two children’s bikes will also be given away. All you have to do is come. The Easter Bunny will be there to start the hunt and pose for pictures. Spring has sprung in Minerva.

NORTH CREEK Ñ The Widlund Gallery at Tannery Pond Community Center in North Creek is pleased to present recent artwork by Queensbury artist Yvonne Wild, and New York City based oil painter Robert Schultheis. The exhibit will be on view from April 26 until May 21. Meet the artists at a reception on Sunday, May 18 from 12 until 2 p.m., followed by a concert by The North Country Singers and the QMS Select Choir. Yvonne Wild has created Ò Functional Pottery.Ó In YvonneÕ s hands, functional works are also works of art. Bowls, vases, platters, pitchers and mugs are covered in expressive glaze combinations that add to the artistry of her forms. Utilizing ancient Raku and Saggar processes, WildÕ s dramatic pieces draw a connection to the natural earth. In Ò Non-Objective in New York City,Ó Robert SchultheisÕ focus is on finding ways to condense color, form and movement to express his intimate relationship with the city in a non-objective way. Details are available at www.tpcca.org. TPCC is located at 228 Main Street in North Creek. Gallery hours are 10 am Ð 4 pm, weekdays, and open most weekends from 12:30 3:30 pm.

JOHNSBURG Ñ Over February break, eight students and two teachers from Johnsburg Central School left the frigid Adirondack Mountains, and were welcomed by palm trees in sunny Key Largo, Florida. The trip acted as the finale to their semester of Marine Biology taken as an independent course at Johnsburg. Students Patrick Harrison, Anna Liebelt, EmmaLee Ellsworth, Liz Ordway, Alicia Hagadorn, Meghan Pierson, Angelina Conte, and Samantha Woodard were ac-

companied by teachers Chad Pooler and Gary Wilson on this trip. The group took three planes and a crowded van between Burlington, Vermont, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida to reach Key Largo. Once in Key Largo, the group stayed at the Marine Lab facility on Largo Sound, for five days. The facility has dorm rooms, indoor and outdoor showers, a cafeteria, classrooms on the Bay and Ocean Side, labs, a beach used with free-time, and even a volleyball court. Marine Lab also owns a fleet of Twin Vee boats, which transported the students on snorkeling field trips to the mangroves, sea grasses, and two coral reef areas.

The group took several trips out into the Atlantic to snorkel and explore. Twice a day, after breakfast and before dinner, they boarded the boats that were manned by a highlytrained and lively crew. Snorkeling gear was provided by Marine Lab, along with a basic run-down on what to expect when in the water, and the proper hand signals to use. Students were fortunate enough to swim with everything from angelfish, blue crabs, and Goliath groupers, to barracuda, sharks, and moon jellyfish. CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

Minerva Central School holds budget workshop, talks GEA By Mike Corey

denpubs@denpubs.com MINERVA Ñ A large crowd of interested citizens filled the cafeteria of Minerva Central School the evening of March 27 to attend the latest school budget workshop. Superintendent Tim Farrell and the Board of Education presented the latest information regarding the status of the budget process for the district, and the approximately 85 people in attendance (including about 15 active MCS students) paid close attention to the slides that were projected on the screen. The presentation commenced with a budget timeline beginning with the upcoming April 10 regular meeting of the board wherein the 20142015 district budget will be adopted, and end-

ing with the May 20 budget vote and election (one board seat will need to be filled). A review of the March 13 workshop was provided followed by a slide presentation showing the current estimated budget gap that will have to be dealt with: $584,282. This is the amount of money that will need to be raised for the district to stay under its calculated 2.74 property tax cap. Superintendent Farrell reminded the board that since the StateÕ s Gap Elimination Adjustment effort took effect four years ago, the Minerva Central School District has lost $850,000. According to Farrell, Ò This has hurt MCS very badly.Ó He reminded the Board that there are four options available for closing the districtÕ s $584,282 budget gap: state aid, fund balance, tax levy, or reducing expenses via cuts. About two-thirds of the total MCS budget derives from the tax levy; the rest comes from state aid.

Many in the crowd were concerned about the possible loss of programs and how the budget gap might be closed. Sydney Barber, a junior at MCS, asked about the impacts of losing access to advanced coursework on students in regard to their future beyond high school. Doug McCall wanted to make sure the board lets the taxpayers of the district know how important it is to maintain the fund balance. Ò ItÕ s the schoolÕ s savings account; without it, the school will be in trouble,Ó he said. Board member Eric Gelber read a statement regarding his frustration with the cutting of state funding over the years. Ò The state has put us where we are now, make no mistake about it. Going above the maximum tax levy is the only hope of saving things that the board thinks are important,Ó he said. The MCS Board of Education has a very dif-

ficult decision to make very soon. It has scheduled a special board meeting for Wednesday, April 2 at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria, at which time there will be a budget discussion. As with the March 27 workshop, interested citizens are welcome to attend this meeting. For more information on how the current budget crisis is and will be affecting the school and the Minerva community, go to the Minerva Cares website at www.minervacares.org. One Board of Education seat term expires at the end of June, and is up for a vote along with the budget on May 20. If you are interested, a petition sheet (25 signatures of taxpayers within the Minerva Central School District) may be picked up from Rose Frettoloso at the MCS office during business hours. The completed petition form must by returned to the school by close of business on Friday, April 11.

T.R. and the hyphenated American

D

uring the final three years of his life, former U.S. President Theodore Ò TeddyÓ Roosevelt (R) gave considerable thought to the waves of European immigrants which were sweeping the nation; they had started in the mid19th century and continued through the opening decades of the 1900s. In most respects, these newcomers were T.R.Õ s idea of model immigrants of the era; that is, they quickly learned English and assimilated themselves unabashedly into the now sadly passŽ Ò melting pot.Ó They were eager to jump into the mainstream of American life and leave their impoverished past behind. These mostly Roman Catholic Europeans-turnedAmericans were not highly schooled, but they were far from being the Ò low informationÓ voters we hear so much about today. In an era before television and Internet, they gobbled up the news by reading newspapers and listening to the radio. They knew their stuff; they could tell you exactly where Montana was located on a USA map (never having visited the place), yet they endured the occasional insult from ignorant Protestant employers as well as passers by. No matter, they were a tough breed of late pioneers; they were happy to escape old Europe. Roosevelt penned his thoughts about U.S. immigrantsÑ and what it means to be an AmericanÑ in two famous texts, dated 1915 and 1919. His statements are often quoted (and misquoted) by folks on both side of todayÕ s immigration amnesty debate. This newspaper first published Roosevelt’s words over a decade ago. In the intervening years, reader Shirley Whittman of Shoreham, Vt. kept the yellowed newspaper clipping of T.R.Õ s words and found some solace in reading it. Last week, Mrs. Whittman called Denton Publications and wondered if it was time, again, to reprint the former PresidentÕ s words. Of course weÕ re always happy to respond to reader requests, so we have gone back and researched both RooseveltÕ s 1915 letter to the Knights of Columbus of New York City and his 1919 letter to the American Defense Society. Both texts exhibit RooseveltÕ s feeling on an emotional yet equally political and philosophical subject. When you read T.R.Õ s words today, you realize that his argument about what it means to be a real American is on-going, evolving. In a modern world where many intellectuals would like to think nationalism is a thing of the past, stirrings of flag and country are actually being reinvigorated around the globe (witness China and Russia of late). What follows are the words of Theodore Roos-

evelt assembled with the help of Reaganite Republican.com: 1915Ñ Ó There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all. Ò This is just as true of the man who puts Ô nativeÕ before the hyphen as of the man who puts German or Irish or English or French before the hyphen. Ò Americanism is a matter of the spirit and of the soul. Our allegiance must be purely to the United States. We must unsparingly condemn any man who holds any other allegiance. Ò But if he is heartily and singly loyal to this Republic, then no matter where he was born, he is just as good an American as any one else. Ò The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalitiesÑ an intricate knot of German-Americans, IrishAmericans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans, or Italian-AmericansÑ each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality than with the other citizens of the American Republic. Ò The men who do not become Americans and nothing else are hyphenated Americans; and there ought to be no room for them in this country. The man who calls himself an American citizen and who yet shows by his actions that he is primarily the citizen of a foreign land, plays a thoroughly mischievous part in the life of our body politic. He has no place here; and the sooner he returns to the land to which he feels his real heart-allegiance, the better it will be for every good American.Ó 1919Ñ Ò ...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.Ó Roosevelt penned his final words on immigration on Jan. 3, 1919, three days before he died. Nearly a century later, many Americans and would-be Americans are divided, even brazenly resistant, to the idea of RooseveltÕ s concept of Americanism. Wither our America and T.R.Õ s ideal of Americans without a hyphen? Will we be able to stop the slide toward ethnic and political Balkanization, too? UncertainÑ for the future is a veil through which no one, not even a president, can peer. Ñ Denton Publications Editorial Board

Letters to the Editor

Editorial dismaying To the News Enterprise: Denton Publications publisher, Dan Alexander, may be right in urging caution regarding who controls ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned names & Numbers) but his portrayal of the US as having shown Ò unwavering support for freedom and transparencyÓ is dismaying. One can easily imagine that not only Russia & China, but a number of other countries as well, may be just as paranoid about our intentions as we are of them given our recent treatment of whistle blowers who have had the temerity to reveal our great difficulty being transparent when it comes to constitutionally illegal acts committed by our government. The flag of “national security” has been used to cover up highly questionable actions by our administrations with increasing frequency in the last few decades. Our support of freedom also sounds hollow both in the face of having a higher percentage of our population behind bars than any other country and in light of our history of supporting cruel dictatorships (in place of democratically elected leaders) in Latin America and Iran. In those cases it appears economic interests easily trumped any support of freedom on our part. I can only wish we could describe our country as Mr. Alexander did in his editorial of March 29th this year, but I would be very pleased to see us all working toward that goal. That goal will, however, elude us until the majority of us both see the flaws in our present behaviors clearly and commit ourselves to eradicating those flaws no matter how difficult the journey. Wes Dingman North Creek

Editorial misleading To the News Enterprise: Last weekÕ s editorial on the Affordable Care Act (ACA, also known as Obamacare) made an effort to present some facts and discuss both strengths and weaknesses of the ACA. However, there is at least one misleading statement in it that needs correcting. The editorial suggests that the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) expects the number of people with jobs to decrease as a result of the ACA. What the CBO actually concluded was that employment will continue to increase, although not by as much as it would have without the ACA. They expect the difference to be Ò almost entirely because workers will choose to supply less labor.” (http://www.cbo.gov/sites/default/files/cbofiles/ attachments/45010-breakout-AppendixC.pdf) In other words, people will leave jobs (mostly low-paying ones, according to the CBO) they didnÕ t really want, because their new health insurance options will give them that freedom. More choice; more freedom; jobs opening up for people who do want them. Sounds like a win for everyone. Dan AlexanderÕ s earlier column on the ACA contained an even more serious misrepresentation of the CBOÕ s research results. He claimed that the CBO calculated that the ACA would add more than $1 trillion to the federal deficit, but that is not true. The CBO actually concluded that Ò the ACA will reduce deficits over the next 10 years and in the subsequent decade.”

Ryan praised To the News Enterprise: Just writing you about my experiences with one of your staff writers. Since he became involved in covering the North Country Honor Flight your writer Shawn Ryan has done a truly remarkable job. I have an incredibly full schedule and logistic issues that rival D-Day, so I do not go out of my way to write nice letters complimenting others for doing their job. What Shawn has done for us has prompted me to make this exeption. I find Shawn to be one of the most sensitive and caring journalists I have ever encountered. His desire to report not only the facts of every detail of the Honor Flight story, but also the emotion behind every person involved, is phenomenal. When it comes to telling the stories of our heroes Shawn has shown to be a good listener and able to feel the compassion and respect it takes for these remarkable men and women to open up. In interviewing United States Marine Corps WW-II veteran Merwin Cowles about his combat in the bloody battle of Okinawa, Merwin broke down trying to describe the horror of what he faced. Out of troops and facing their last stand of the war in 1945, the Japanese reverted to using local children 8 or 9 or 10 years old as prisoners, attached bayonettes to bamboo sticks and sent them out of the caves at Nahau to go stab and kill the wounded Marines on the beachheads. Merwin was a crew chief on a team of three Amtraks, each equipped with the firepower of two 30-caliber machine guns on the front and one 50-cal on the back. Seeing their fellow Marines being murdered by children MerwinÕ s Lieutenant in command ordered him to open up. I am the first person in 68 years he ever told that story to, until he met Shawn. He still has nightmares about the slugs of the big 50-cal guns literally cutting these children in half. For him to have shared these agonizing memories with your writer implies a great feeling of trust he had with Shawn. And for the public to finally realize these warriors have carried these horrible memories with them for 70 years is part of our duty as a nation to finally recognize how much we owe them I know that your editorial policy in allowing your publications to run so many consecutive stories about the Honor Flight is also without precedent. I can only thank you and assure you that the public wants to know every detail of the Honor Flight, every heroÕ s story, every parade, Flag ceremony, and mostly about every flight. The Honor Flight may well be the finest organization in America in regard to what we do and how well we do it, and I am only slightly biased in that regard. Please keep these stories coming, please continue to give Shawn the immense credit he deserves for understanding the importance of what he is reporting, and please take a minute to let him know how indebted we are to him, to you, to John Gereau and to all of your readers for caring enough about the Honor Flight to give this such a high priority in your publications. Danny Kaifetz, Director North Country Honor Flight

think spring may be arriving. Despite the fact we were to get snow the rain showed up heavy all Saturday night and most of Sunday. Flooding and more bumps in the road appeared. Finally could see a few bases of the trees. maybe the syrup makers will be able to get a quick run of sap to get a taste of new maple syrup. The weather has been cold and snowy that the Maple season is later than most years. Fred Allen and I remember spending so many years at the Sugar house in the evenings trying to nap while we waited for Mom and Dad get done boiling sap for the night. Nothing like the smell of hot sap boiling before coming to syrup. So many folks have gone to the sugar house to taste the hot sap and sign their name on the wall. The Bakers Mills/Sodom Firehouse is in need of repair after being struck by a passer-by. Glad no one was hurt. Dad drove to Athol one day last week to go to the garage to have his truck inspected. It was great to have him drive after almost three months but let me drive home. There was a birthday dinner at Earl AllenÕ s for Alonzo Conlon. Chicken Dinner topped off with Cake and Ice Cream. Emma Parsons has been a patient in Glens Falls Hospital for several days. Ashley Conlon Smith is also a patient at Glens Falls Hospital. Sorry to hear about the death of Alyse Van Keuren, Harold Kirkpatrick and Butch Annis. Happy Birthday to Barb DeGrush, Megan Bacon,Peter Allen, Alonzo Conlon, Drew Warner Warner, Shawn Warrington, Kara LaBounty, Jimmy Mosher, Hannah Mosher, Elke Dunkley, Barbara Glover, Tammy Granger, Chuck Granger, Nancy Montena, Cheryl Morin, Leon Morin, Ann Deppe, Linda Stevens, Ryan Sprague, Sharon Gangemi, Fabiann Conlon, Happy Anniversary to: Alvin and Jean Russell Enjoy each and every day.

Notes from Planet Earth By Wes Dingman Crafty parasites

O

ur general understanding of parasites is that they are generally small organisms that infect specific animals or plants. They differ from predators in that they do not kill or permanently immobilize their victims immediately. Having infected their usual host, the parasiteÕ s growth and reproduction, on or within their host, may or may not cause disease. But one way or another they mature and shed their numerous eggs or offspring through lungs, feces, or skin into the surrounding air, water or soil with the expectation that at least a few of their eggs or offspring may, by chance, be taken up by another suitable host. We have learned, however, that there are a number of parasites whose behavior or effect on their hostÕ s behavior is such that there will be a much greater probability of their offspring finding the appropriate hosts. One such parasite is a fungus that infects carpenter ants. As this fungus matures in the ant it causes it to leave its colony, climb a tree, and find the underside of a leaf or an overhanging twig. Thereupon it fixes its sharp mandibles firmly into the twig or leaf and dies. The fungus then completes its life cycle by sending out fruiting bodies from various parts of its victim which, in turn, shed their spores into the air to land upon the very places where more such ants are likely to be foraging. A close analogy of this behavior occurs in humans infected with a cold or flu virus which, by greatly irritating the nasal passages and lungs of the infected individual, causes sneezing and coughing, enabling the newly-shed mature virus to be widely spread to other susceptible humans. A protozoan (a single-celled animal), Toxoplasmosis gondii, which can cause severe illness in the human fetus or in humans whose immune system is compromised, infects a variety of different mammals but can only reproduce in cats. However, when it infects rats it alters their brain in such a way as to remove their fear of cats. In this way the rats are more easily caught and eaten by the cats, thus returning the parasite to the one host in which is able to reproduce. There is also a flatworm parasite that matures by sequentially infecting fish followed by birds. Its presence in its first host, killifish, causes the unsuspecting fish to flash their bright sides in the sun as they swim thereby making it easier for the herons that feed on this fish to find them. Once in the bird, the flatworm can mature and shed its eggs back into the water. A parasitic wasp exists which preys on cockroaches by injecting them with a toxin that makes them docile and susceptible to being herded into the waspÕ s nest to be eaten by the waspÕ s young. More recently it has been learned that a virus, carried by cricketeating lizards, infects crickets and causes them to mate more frequently and energetically in spite of the fact that their reproductive tissues become depleted of nutrients by the replicating virus. These frequently-mating crickets thus spread the virus widely in the cricket population. These infected crickets in turn spread the virus back to the lizards that eat them, thus ensuring the virus of yet more lizards in which to multiply. Finally, as has been learned in other contexts, not all bacteria of the same species may behave identically. An important example of this occurs with the typhoid causing bacteria which, upon infection, responds in one of two ways: some replicate causing typhoid fever while others go into a persistent nonreplicating dormant state. These latter bacteria, protected from antibiotics because they are not growing and dividing, can either break out at a later time causing a relapse in the illness or be transferred by contact or through feces to other, more susceptible, humans.

In between meals and field trips, students were in the classrooms or labs. Their lessons included reeffish identification, coral reef ecology, invertebrate diversity, plankton identification, sea grass ecology, sponge spicule identification, and sea turtle reports. To finish off their trip, the group made a visit to both the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, and the Everglades National Park. They finished their last night at the facility by indulging in authentic Key Lime pie, then, the group began their two-flight journey back to the Adirondacks.
