Grant for ‘Greener’ Minerva
This Week NORTH CREEK
By Mike Corey
denpubs@denpubs.com MINERVA Ñ The Minerva Town Board met for its first (of two) regular meetings for the month on April 3 with a crowd of about a dozen citizens in attendance. On the agenda were several project updates, including one on the townÕ s Cleaner, Greener Community Grant, awarded to the town in 2013. This NYS Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) program empowers communities and encourages them to be more sustainable by implementing smart growth practices. The grant ties in with an effort to develop projects that lead to the creation of regional sustainability plans. The town received a grant of $50,875 to update its 2004 Comprehensive Plan and to develop a town-wide facilities plan. The work would result in a plan to reduce energy use, integrate the use of renewable energy, and encourage the use of renewables. To fully take advantage of the grant, the town would dedicate $16,875 of funds to the project as a match. Councilman LaBar suggested that the town modify the existing Comprehensive Plan to develop a scaled-down version of the plan, hiring a consultant to assist with the update. Councilman McCall felt that the update would not be a complicated process and the town could complete the update without hiring a consultant. The board was hesitant to make a $16,875 commitment toward the project - which includes a Request for Proposal (RFP) process, because it was not budgeted for 2014. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Local non-profit needs a lifeline By Pete DeMola pete@denpubs.com
INDIAN LAKE Ñ H elping Hands needs a helping hand. Faced with increases in state-mandated training for their staff, the Indian Lake-based elderly care providers are turning to Adirondack Gives, a regional crowd-funding website designed to help raise money for struggling non-profit agencies. With all of the little rising costs in business, itÕ s becoming harder to stay afloat and to maintain the quality of care provided by their staff, said Helping Hands office manager Nina Dickinson. Materials that were once provided at little or low-cost now have to be charged, like audio materials for basic training, webinars and

professional digests, many of which clock in at $150 per employee. ÒT his is due to the ever-changing legal aspects of providing care in a digital world,Ó said Dickinson. ÒS ometimes this ends up accumulating to $1000 just to do minimal training.Ó These costs put the agency, which serves about 35 elderly residents of Hamilton County throughout 13 settlements, between a rock and a hard place because it forces them to choose between the training and direct licensed care. Dickinson said the situation is magnified because health care within the county, which is the least populated in the state, is confined to several small centers that are satellites of larger organizations, like the Hamilton County Public Health Nursing Service. LONG LAKE Ñ Residents emerged from their dens on Tuesday, April 1 to receive an update on a tech project that will eventually deliver shiny new highspeed Internet access to their homes and businesses by late-summer. Joe Hockey, an engineer with SLIC, the St. Lawrence County-based company who landed the contract for the project, said the final grants should go through by April 15 Ñ that will allow for the construction of a 21-mile backbone from the Wild Center in Tupper Lake to Long Lake Ñ before the buildout
to Long Lake on June 1 and the final phase of running fiber service directly to homes, an installation process that the company hopes will be ready by August 1. The project, which was made possible through funds secured through state grants, will see service expanded to 683 households and 67 businesses. In town, a broadband committee has been meeting since November to determine how to best utilize the service. Ò We plan on sending out a survey to residents and homeowners to hear their thoughts,Ó said Parks and Recs Director Alex Roalsvig, who is also the committee chief. Ò We look forward to educating and getting people excited about this new opportunity.Ó
Roalsvig said residents should expect the surveys at the end of April or the beginning of May. Online versions, provided residents have access, will also be available. Business owners seemed pleased at the progress. Ò We have an online presence and weÕ d surely benefit from highspeed access,” said Bill Sandiford, owner of ADK Trading Post, a specialty grocery store. Sandiford said the possible wi-fi hotspots that the town is exploring would be particularly useful for the campers from Lake Eaton who patronize his shop during the summer. Ò The faster the better.Ó

With over 40 members from around the Adirondack region, many of the members have earned national recognition from the Pastel Society of America, a nationally recognized organization in New York City. Tannery Pond Community Center is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays, when the Ò openÓ flag is out. Buses and groups are welcome, and the building is wheelchair accessible.

Continued from page 1 However, the board had approved the NYSERDA grant application when it was submitted, knowing that a successful application would mean that the match would need to be identified and used. Supervisor McNally echoed the boardÕ s reluctance about moving forward, but said he would check into it. In reference to the comprehensive plan, he said Ò itÕ s not like itÕ s a law Ð the plan is only ideas and guidelines.Ó In the highway superintendantÕ s report, Bruce McGinn mentioned that county Route 30 is earmarked for repaving from its intersection with state Route 28N to near the Wilson Road depending on the amount of material. This particular stretch of highway is in bad shape, according to McGinn. The board also indicated that it is planning to log its approximately 25-acre parcel of land behind the water tank off Church Road. The town will likely hire a forester to assist with this process. John Paradis, a retired forester, said he was willing to walk the property with Highway Superintendant McGinn and Supervisor McNally to scope out its logging potential. During the first public comment period, Ed Healey reported on his interactions with Frontier Communications in regard to his slow DSL connection. He said that Frontier is not happy when customers complain about their service; the company did indicate that it would be upgrading the system at some point. Healey stated that he argued with Frontier that his high-speed connection wasnÕ t fast enough and that his activism led to a discount on his bill. He encouraged customers to call FrontierÕ s Tech Support, then customer service in order to be heard. Improvements need to be made to FrontierÕ s infrastructure.

Fly fishing workshops set in Newcomb throughout summer
NEWCOMB — Two weekend fly fishing workshops will be offered here by the Northern Forest Institute (NFI) this year. Geared toward beginning fly fishers, the spring and fall workshops will not only focus on the art of fly casting and fly fishing but, in keeping with the mission of NFI, will also emphasize the natural science of fly fishing. Participants will receive instruction about proper gear and casting; the ecology of Adirondack streams, rivers and ponds; and the insect and fish life that the region’s brook, brown and rainbow trout feed on. The technique known as Ò catch and releaseÓ will be emphasized to promote conservation of the AdirondackÕ s fresh-
water fish resources. Participants will also be introduced to the art of fly tying. Instruction will take place in and around the Adirondack Interpretive Center and fishing excursions are planned nearby. The workshops will be taught by licensed fly fishing guides with backgrounds in environmental science. No prior knowledge of fly fishing is necessary, nor is gear, which will be made available. There is a special price for those wishing to attend both workshops, as the second workshop will build on what is learned in the first. There is space for 15 participants who will stay in cabins on the Newcomb Campus of the
SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. The spring workshop will be May 30 and 31 and June 1. The fall workshop will be Sept. 12 through 14. The cost to attend each workshops is $199 per person and includes meals, lodging, instruction, equipment and guided fishing. A special rate of $375 is available to those who take both workshops. The workshops are open to anyone age 12 and up, although minors must
have an adult in attendance. Participants over the age of 16 must have a New York state fishing license which is available at http://www. dec.ny.gov/permits/6091.html This is a great opportunity to learn a wonderfully satisfying skill and practice it in a breathtakingly beautiful Adirondack setting. For more information or to reserve a spot, contact the Adirondack Interpretive Center in Newcomb at 582-2000 or email at aic@esf.edu.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph LaRocque are in the possession of a painting by Miss Alice Ives, a former English/Art teacher at Johnsburg Central School, who was well-known for her expertise in the arts. The LaRocques would like to donate the painting to the Johnsburg Town Hall, and would like to have an art show of Miss Ives’ works at the Johnsburg Town Library. They would appreciate it if anyone who has a painting (or paintings) by Miss Ives would consider loaning them now for a two-month display at a later date, perhaps in the fall. The paintings will be picked up and returned after the art show. The show date will be scheduled by Mrs. Anne Morse, Johnsburg Library Art Director. Recalls and take downs
T
oyota has been through it: lawyers smelling blood in the water, injured consumers, and those going for the gold by signing on to class-action lawsuits. Now itÕ s General MotorsÕ turn. Thousands of G.M. vehicles are part of the current faulty ignition-switch recall, another auto company scandal and shakedown, er, problem (witness Toyota and its Òu nintended accelerationÓ w oes). Last week, a U.S. judge in Texas decided to Òg o slowÓ after lawyers and families of victims called for a corporate lynching. They want General Motors to ground 2.53 million cars due to the defective ignition. So, how do 2.53 million drivers get around without their cars? ItÕ s an immense problem that no consumer lawyer, or even a federal judge, can get their hands around. In fact, the problem might cause its own spin off of lawsuits (to which many in our area will be happy to sign on to). G.M. is one of only two remaining U.S.-owned auto companies. Chrysler, like it or not, is really a foreign car company now being owned by the Italians thanks to Uncle Sam giving away that farm to foreigners just after the U.S. taxpayer bailed it out. And, ironically, as a new, leaner, meaner G.M., under Mary BarraÕ s leadership, was emerging from its predecessorÕ s bankrupt Government Motors bailout image, the old G.M. made a creepy reappearance, much like actor Jack NicholsonÕ s weird movie character in ÒT he ShiningÓ. ToyotaÕ s scandal and subsequent $1.2 billion shakedown by the DOJÑ due to the controversial unintended acceleration debacleÑw as in the big news just as the G.M. problem moved up in the headlines to remind us that itÕ s always open season on big business. But in fairness to the Detroit boys and girlsÑh ey, if Toyota vehicles werenÕ t grounded over the acceleration problem (which had casualties, too) why should G.M.Õ s vehicles be grounded? With millions of these G.M vehicles already over the 100,000-mile mark on the odometer, why the sudden urgency to ground fleets of the

cars? Many G.M. cars have well over 100,000 miles and; so far, no ignition-failure problem. Are the ignition failures in vehicles with over 100,000 miles or under? (We donÕ t seem to know.) No matter, why should we stop driving our car based on a few accidents (and deaths)? We are told that thereÕ s a problem with the airbag power. Well, what we donÕ t hear in the news reports is the fact that G.M. passenger airbags (the bags in question of failure) have a backup power source; part of engineering safety in-depth. So, we must agree with G.M. attorney David Balser. He told the Texas judge hearing the case that grounding 2.53 million cars would be Òu nprecedentedÓ an d Òc ause chaos.Ó How about the math: 31 crashes and 12 deaths since 2001 out of 2.53 million vehicles; not something for G.M. to be proud of, yet it doesnÕ t take an Alan Turing to notice that 31 events out of 2.53 million in 13 years is, well, not something requiring the grounding of an entire fleet. An observation: If there is a bona fide catastrophic flaw running through every single ignition switch installed in 2.53 million cars, wouldnÕ t there be a far higher number of crashes and deaths that weÕ d be hearing about?. How are other G.M. drivers reacting to all this? There is a Facebook-based group of recreational Chevrolet HHR owners. Members are still cruising around and enjoying their fun, spiffy retro-styled cars. Sure, the news is unsettling, but remember that so much of what we hear in the media is composed of equal parts of hype and hysteria. Spurned owners aside, when there are DOJ and other lawyers sniffing the water for corporate blood... Need I say more? Will G.M. end up exactly like ToyotaÑa oneway trip to Shakedown City. Will it be forced to pay out for a problem that, at least statistically, doesn’t appear as catastrophic as first reported by the news media and the attorneys of victims and consumer groups. Seek NY opinion on pipeline To the News Enterprise: The North Country Chamber of Commerce is the largest business and economic development organization in northern New York and the Lake Champlain region, representing more than 4,200 predominantly small employers across Essex, Clinton, Franklin, Hamilton and northern Warren Counties. We are strategically committed to the sustainable economic future of our shared, bi-state Champlain Valley region, working actively over the last twenty years across the lake on such endeavors as the Lake Champlain Basin Plan. Looking ahead, the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project, now before the Addison County Regional Planning Commission for review, holds an historic opportunity for Vermont and New York to jointly sustain a major source of shared employment and economic activity while also significantly enhancing the environment, all by assisting International Paper in the planned transition from heavy oil to natural gas. Given the broad regional importance of this pending project, and the critical importance of bi-state cooperation and partnership in what is our shared future, we hope the Commission will provide sufficient time and opportunity for all areas of the Lake Champlain region to be part of the dialogue and input, and that the Commission will in the end advance this important project in support of our joint economic and environmental future. This fun-filled and friendly event brought more than 150 people together to raise much-needed funds for local literacy projects. Team Learned Lukers led by Bob Hanna claimed first place, followed by the Literacy Bombers led by Cheryl Schiller. After a tough tiebreaker, third place was awarded to team Maple Madness led by Sybil Quayle. To the News Enterprise: Opinions, freedom, rights and wrongs - This editorial is the best editorial I have ever read and and should be featured on the front page of every newspaper, magazine, television, radio and other major media outlets instead of tucked away in a tiny Northwoods publication. I can hardly believe that anyone would even publish it! I just want to add a few truths that the media talking heads have propagandized to the point that it just disgusts me personally to even consider myself an American. Concerning the ACA, no matter how the politicians, media Ò spin doctors,Ó talk show Ò personalitiesÓ and other paid propagandists spin it, the truth is that universal health care in the U.S. is long overdue. ThereÕ s no need to discuss this any further. Regarding unchecked population growth, no matter how the media Ò spin doctors,Ó talk show Ò personalitiesÓ and other paid propagandists spin it, the truth is that, with very few exceptions, every one of mankindÕ s problems is owed to too many people. As a person with a scientific training in thermodynamics and reaction kinetics, I can assure you with 100 percent certainty that a day of reckoning is coming. The only uncertainty is when. No matter how the politicians, media Ò spin doctors,Ó talk show Ò personalitiesÓ and other paid propagandists spin it, the truth is that -- as IÕ ve said many times -- President KennedyÕ s famous admonition to, Ó ask not what your Country can do for you but rather what you can do for your Country.Ó may be a popular

Question of the Month
What is your favorite thing to do on the weekend?
clicheÕ among the troops but it clearly doesnÕ t apply to legislators and the wealthy. IÕ m well aware that you know all this, but this is just a gentle reminder that some people really are aware of whatÕ s going on in this dysfunctional country. The real issue is what can be done? The truthful answer? Not much, and certainly not by appealing to a rigged legal system. In any event, today is the first day of New York’s trout season and IÕ ve got to think about important things, such as how long before the snow melts enough so that I can get to the streams! t is great living in a small friendly community when someone stops by it could be for a chat, bringing a loaf of homemade bread, fresh maple syrup or meals on wheels. Make good use of your small Post Office. Soon the hours will be cut to 2 or 3 hours a day. So many have gone to other ways to pay their bills. We are losing some of our long time privileges. Shasti Conlon spent some hours this past week in Glens Falls and Albany taking test to go in the Army. Fabiann Conlon enjoyed his birthday with his daughter, Shasti and having a ham dinner and dessert at his grandfathers, Earl Allen. We have already seen some April showers to bring great May flowers. Good luck to those trying to make maple syrup so late in the season. Earl Allen tells that some of his best syrup was made in April. Sodom Community Church will have their yearly Palm Sunday Dinner after the morning worship on April 13th. Rev. Daisy Allen started this for the church so many years ago when it was held at the Bakers Mills- Sodom Firehouse in the 1980Õ s. The animals in the wild are looking for food to eat so are coming closer to civilization. Beware. Already so many of these have been killed on the roads after surviving the harsh winter. They can do a great damage to your vehicles. Emma Parsons is at the Adirondack Tri-County Nursing Home for rehab. She would enjoy visits and cards. Blake and Joann Morehouse are enjoying their new kitchen that Denny Bacon made for them. There is a new movie out that has been said to be a great one to go see. Check out Ò GodÕ s Not DeadÓ to see where it is showing. Hope for a WomenÕ s Heart will feature Ò AriseÓ on May 17th at the Holiday Inn in Saratoga, NY. Tickets are $30.00 will will include lunch and the special event. For tickets and information call or write: Lois Stark 5151 State Route 40, Argyle, NY 12809 or 518-260-5605. Make checks to HFAWH. arch 2014 continued our string of Ò old fashioned WinterÓ months with snow and record cold. Winter refused to give up its icy grip which was great for skiers and snowmobilers but tiresome to those who were looking for an end to this long Winter. The average high temperature was 31.3 degrees and the average low was 10.4 degrees giving us an average of 20.9 degrees which is a whopping 9.3 degrees below normal. This was the coldest March in the last 32 years by a large margin. The previous coldest March was in 1984 when the average temperature was 24.0 degrees, and the warmest was only 2 years ago when the average was 38.8 degrees. This March was almost 19 degrees colder than 2 years ago. The highest temperature,47 degrees ,was recorded on the 11th and the lowest,-14 degrees, was recorded on the 6th.There were 9 days below zero compared to an average of about 2. The -1 degree temperature recorded on the 25th was the latest below zero reading on record. Because of this record cold the maple syrup industry has started very slowly with very little syrup made in March, usually a very productive month. Producers are worried that April will warm up too quickly and the season will be very short. Melted precipitation for the month was 3.39 inches, only 0.08 above normal. This brings our seasonal total to 9.28 inches, 0.59 inches above normal. Measurable precipitation fell on 11 days with the greatest amount, 1.52 inches, falling on the 12th. Snowfall for the month was 18.6 inches, 3.3 inches above normal. This brings our seasonal total to 78.8 inches, 4.6 inches above our normal amount of 74.2 inches. The largest snowstorm was the 12.7 inches that fell on the 12th. The river reached its highest level, 3.95 feet, on the 31st and its lowest level, 2.77 feet, on the 25th,26th and the 27th.

Minerva Central School students performs musical ‘Annie’ By Mike Corey
denpubs@denpubs.com MINERVA Ñ LetÕ s seeÉ . Hair that is exceedingly curly and red. A dress that is crimson in color. Eleven years old, perky, appealing, and smart, an orphan. Has a dog named Sandy. Who could possibly fit this description? Why, it’s Annie, of course. If you were at Minerva Central School this past weekend, you would have seen her along with a large cast of other wonderful characters who filled the stage in the schoolÕ s gymnasium for two performances of Ò Annie, Jr.,Ó and the show was excellent. The musical is the classic Annie, with Taylor Feiden in the starring role. The time: 1933. The place: New York City. The very mean Miss Hannigan (Larissa Smith) threatens to make life miserable for Annie and her friends at the orphanage until a lucky break lands Annie at the fabulous mansion of the billionaire Oliver Warbucks (Richard Bennett) for the Christmas holidays. With help from his able assistant Grace Farrell (Jessica Hill), and despite his reluctance to have an orphan in his home, Warbucks grows very fond of Annie, and wants to adopt her. However, Miss Hannigan and her devious brother Rooster (Shane Bush-Lancaster) and his less-than-innocent side-kick Lily St. Regis (Danielle McNally) are not about to let that happen. ItÕ s a great story, with a great ending. Under the sure guidance of Director Sabrina LaPointe (who also served as Producer, Music Director, and Choreographer) a very together group of fine young actors put on a great show the evening of March 29 and the afternoon of March 30. Every other year, the Minerva Central School Drama Club puts forth a wonderful musical at the
school, and this was one of the best. All the favorite Annie songs were sung, including Ò Maybe,Ó Ò Hard-Knock Life,Ó Ò Tomorrow,Ó Ò Little Girls,Ó Ò N.Y.C,Ó and Ò Easy Street.Ó The singing was spectacular, as well as the dancing and of course, the acting. A number of students had more than one role as actors. No less than 30 students were involved in the show, ranging in age from 10 to 18, truly a schoolwide effort. School staff, parents, and community members were very involved in this spectacular production. Specific recognition goes to Mindy Piper (set design); Diane McNally (costume design); Janelle Beaulieu, Trish Gardner, and Katie Smith (props); Jed Armstrong (lighting and sound design); Angela McCall (stage manager); Bryan Bee, Daniel Dunbar, and Blake Piper (stage crew); Kim Monthony (for her wonderful dog Jack, aka Sandy); Alice Halloran, Lena Mather, and Stacie McNally (parent helpers); and Will Smith, Bev West and crew (setup). Thanks also go to Garnet Hill Lodge and T.C. Murphy for set material loaners and donations and to Kathy Feiden (for AnnieÕ s dress). Director LaPointe pointed out that: Ò Annie Jr. has been a labor of love from the very beginning. I am so fortunate to have had assistance from many wonderful volunteers, but I am most proud of the work done by the actors. From auditions and casting, to rehearsals, to creating props and sets, to pulling together costumes, each member of the cast has worked incredibly hard to createÉ . AnnieÕ s world. Thank you all for sharing your amazing children with me!Ó The whole production staff wishes to give special thanks to the MCS Board of Education, MCS Administration, MCS Faculty and Staff, and of course to all parents, family and friends of the performers. What a great show it was!

Gallery displaying artwork of JCS students
JOHNSBURG Ñ The Corner Gallery of the Town of Johnsburg Library is displaying art work by Johnsburg Central School students. This show is a wonderful, colorful mix of art. Maria Glode, who teaches elementary, middle and high school art at Johnsburg, inspires her classes with imaginative assignments such as Altered Books in which books that were destined for the scrap heap have become instead the basis of truly fun art, sculptures blossoming from the pages. Another assignment was creating art from recycled cardboard. The Zentangle Method creates images through patterns. There are also linoleum prints done by the 8th grade and chalk pastels by the 5th graders. ItÕ s impossible to describe this exhibit. You have to see the art for yourself, and itÕ s only up through the month of April, so please come to the library, enjoy the exhibit and browse the collection of books and DVDÕ s. The library is open Wednesday, 11a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 251-4343 for information on coming programs.
Sunrise service planned
LONG LAKE Ñ An ecumenical sunrise Easter service will be held on the Long Lake Town Beach at 7:30 a.m. on Easter Sunday, April 20. This service is sponsored by the Calvary United Methodist Church. All are invited to both events, so start your Easter Sunday with worshiping as the sun is rising over a most beautiful Adirondack scene, and then join the community for Sunday breakfast. A traditional Easter service will be held at the Calvary Methodist Church at 11 a.m.
