Girls on the Run 5K planned for Rutland RUTLAND — Girls on the Run Vermont plans a new 5K run/walk, to be held Saturday, June 1, at 10 a.m. at the Vermont State Fairgrounds in Rutland. Gov. Peter Shumlin (D) will be on hand to speak before the event and share words of encouragement and support with program participants, their families and friends, and community members, all of whom are invited to take part. Girls on the Run Vermont founder Nancy Heydinger described the event as, “one mile of ponytails, sweaty faces, and beaming smiles.” All proceeds from the event will go toward scholarships. The presenting sponsor is Carris Reels. Platinum-level event sponsors are Rutland Regional Medical Center, VelcoVermont Transco LLC. RUTLAND — May flowers are in abundance everywhere in Rutland. A unique citywide fundraising project, called Rutland Blooms, is being spearheaded by Green Mountain Power. The project is making a colorful splash in downtown Rutland City and is evocative of U.S. First Lady “Lady Bird” Johnson’s similar nationwide efforts during the 1960s. “Rutland Blooms seems to have tapped into a wellspring of community pride and spirit,” said Steve Costello, GMP’s vice president for generation and energy innovation. Costello said that the city beautification effort saw pledges “nearing $10,000, and a dozen more businesses and organizations have joined the 40 that had signed on when the campaign was announced last month.” According to Costello, those who make cash donations will see their gifts used for seeds, plants and bulbs that will be planted around the metro area—from city entranceways, various public spaces, and at the sites of several non-profit organizations. Donations may be sent to Rutland Blooms, care of Downtown

halk it up to visionary author Robert A. Heinlein’s 1941 prediction of America’s Crazy Years coming true, or just another one of those upside-down socio-political happenings, but our post-2008 penchant for raising taxes, without either curbing spending or welcoming new business, has infected nearly all legislatures in the New England states. It’s ironic that this is occurring in a place where a tea party and “no taxation without representation” started a revolution. Please don’t shoot the messenger, but it looks to me like your tax-happy legislator is channeling the zeitgeist of the Tories, English gentry, and Yorkers of ye olde colonial days. While I can neither understand nor explain it, the glaring fact is that most of you have indicated by your voting that you like higher taxes and bigger government—may I ask why? If you don’t think this applies to you then why do you continue to elect the same tired old tax-and-spend majority party legislators? Today, in Montpelier, Golden Dome legislators have been absorbed into a creepy, Star Trek-like Borg political collective. And when it comes to the tax-and-spend group think “resistance is futile”. It’s starting to look like Trek’s Locutus-of-Borg is the twisted captain at our state’s helm. However, just when things look bad enough, I remind myself that the tide must turn, just as it always has. Last week, we saw the largest increase in the gasoline tax in Vermont’s history—nearly 7 cents with diesel going up another penny next year and in 2015—regular gas will see about another penny increase, and all without a blink from most folks in Montpelier or the media. Gov. Peter Shumlin (D) seemed to enjoy signing the new budget into law—in the dead of night, away from the klieg lights—with its corrosive tax increases. (And of course the new gas tax money will be used for transportation things such as new bridges and a rebuild of the cratered, crumbling west-central entrance to Vermont that is Route 125, right?) But wait, the madness hasn’t subsided yet; the latest manifestation of Heinlein’s Crazy Years in Montpelier is 1.) the push for yet another tobacco tax, and 2.) a tax on satellite television. What’s next? Taking a cue from a line in a golden-oldie Beatle song, Vermont legislators might just find a way to tax your feet. Regarding another tobacco tax: Yes, yes, we all know about the evils of regular tobacco use, but why are our legislators so much in love with this legal weed? If tobacco is so bad for us, why not ban its use in Vermont outright? No, that’s a silly notion because without Vermont tobacco users—who are mostly low-income residents—legislators would be unable to tap the Niagara of revenue they get to collect and spend from the in-state sale of Nicotiana tobacum products. Majority led state legislators want to raise Vermont’s tax on cigarettes and smokeless tobacco to $3.12, possibly higher. Thus, the Vermont legislature is currently trying to close the giant budget gap it created on the backs of motorists, tobacco users, satellite television viewers, business owners, and “X”. (Please feel free to fill in the blank.) This editor believes it’s unfair to single out motorists, legal tobacco users, and thousands of Vermont satellite T.V. viewers, to fund Montpelier’s addiction to government spending programs. The next election will be the ideal time to evict Montpelier’s political gentry. Vermont legislators, whether Democrat, Republican or Progressive, are playing a most dangerous game in Montpelier; they are bucking the facts of fiscal history—no state has ever taxed itself into prosperity. Middlebury Riverfront Park gets big boost From News & Staff Reports

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury’s Marble Works Riverfront Park is closer to realization, according to officials involved with the project. The effort to establish the park began in 2007 following the town’s participation in a creative economy workshop. “Otter Creek with the falls is the town’s greatest natural asset,” according to Nancy Malcolm of the Middlebury Riverfront Committee. “At the same time, we have done little over the years to enhance the experience of viewing or enjoying the splendor of the falls. We are going to fix that. In mid May, we will begin the project by putting in pathways, a rose hedge, amphitheater-like seating, trees, native plantings and a rain garden. There will be historical replica towers—from the days of the marble industry—with lighting and interpretive signs. The construction is expected to take 8–10 weeks.” Malcolm also said that the Marble Works Partnership has given Middlebury an easement while Partnership officials said they will assume maintenance of the park. “The town has granted $100,000 from the Conservation Funds toward the park,” she said. “After permitting, surveying, engineering and design work we

Middlebury College lineman joins NFL By Lou Varricchio

newmarketpress@denpubs.com MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College community is celebrating the selection of Panther offensive lineman Ryan Moores by the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons football team. Moores, who stands 6’5” and weighs 315 pounds, signed a free-agent contract with the team and is in Atlanta for the team’s rookie mini-camp. The athlete was named an All-NESCAC player three years. In 2013, he was honored as a First-Team All American player. “An NFL scout of 30 years basically described Ryan Moores, to a ‘t’, as the perfect offensive lineman for the NFL,” according to the ‘CAC online. “...The last NESCAC athlete to crack the NFL was Steve Hauschka, a kicker now playing for the Seattle Seahawks.” Moores is the third Panther player in since 2007 to attend an NFL training camp. Kevin Ryan, class of 2007, was a defensive lineman who attended rookie camp at Tampa Bay. Hauschka, who was a classmate of Ryan, just renewed his contract with the Seahawks.

By dropping your kitten at the RCHS shelter, volunteers will transport your kitten to Vt.-CAN where he or she will be spayed or neutered and given a rabies shot, and returned to RCHS later that day. Prior registration is required and Vt.-CAN fees for services apply. To register please call RCHS at 802-483-6700. For more information visit www.rchsvt.org or for more information about Vt.-CAN visit www.vt-can.org. LADY Two year old. Spayed Female. American Shelter Dog. I am a gentle dog, a little on the timid side. I enjoy greeting people with soft tail wags and I like to have my head scratched. I was brought here on April 18 after living as a stray in Fair Haven for several months. I know how to SIT and I was already spayed when I got here so at one time I knew the ropes of home life but it has been a while. I think I would like best to go to a home where people are around a lot as I, understandably, get anxious when I’m left alone.

CABELLA Two year old. Spayed Female. American Shelter Dog. I am a very appealing girl who is looking for someone to love. It seems that I spent most of my time tied up outside before I got to RCHS and I am not too familiar with the ways of a house dog. Everything scared me at first but I am slowly warming up to the folks who work here and relaxing around them. I’ve lived with other dogs before and a friendly, well-socialized dog might make a good role model for me. I will be a project for a while until I can learn what is expected of me and how to meet your expectations but I will pay you back ten-fold. BELLITA Three year old. Spayed Female. Domestic Short Hair Brown Tiger w/White. Are you looking for a beautiful girl with an overflowing personality? Well, you found her. I am a super good looking gal with beautiful tiger stripes and a striking white bib on my chest and white boots on my feet. I arrived here with a few other friends from another shelter that was just a little too full to house us. It has been a busy week but I am doing pretty well with all of the changes and look forward to starting my new life in this new town with my new family. Maybe that new family will be you. TANGO One and a half year old. Spayed Female. Domestic Short Hair Dilute Tortoiseshell. Talk about a knockout. I am a gorgeous and very colorful girl with some breathtaking colors and markings. There is no question that I sure do stand out in a crowd. I arrived at the shelter March 27 as a stray from Rutland. I feel that now that my days out there are behind me things are really on the up and up. I can’t wait for the next chapter of my life. RUTLAND — An American Red Cross official said three families in Rutland wishing to remain anonymous are homeless after a late morning fire destroyed their Maple Street apartments May 3. In response, the Red Cross has mobilized several resources to support the fire-affected families. ARC case managers have met the families to help with food and shelter and other emergency needs. According to Doug K. Bishop of the Red Cross in Vermont, “assistance with temporary lodging and financial support to replace food and clothing will be offered. At least one of the residents is being provided help to replace medications lost to the fire.” In addition, Bishop noted, a volunteer trained in disaster mental health was at the Maple Street site to support the affected residents. College sports roundup From College News Reports

Spartan women wins NAC Lacrosse Championship

Castleton — Castleton State College’s hold on the 2013 North Atlantic Conference championship looked less than certain after 30 minutes, but the top-seeded Spartans controlled play in the final half to secure a 21-12 victory over Thomas and the program’s second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans finished the contest with a 44-20 shot advantage and picked up 24 draw controls compared to 12 for the Terriers. Castleton also went 5-for-10 on free position attempts and the Terriers scored on both of their attempts. Sarah Clark added four goals and Tournament MVP Brandi Whittemore scored twice and finished with three caused turnovers, two draw controls and two ground balls from her midfield position.

The Vermont Drone Bill contains elements of similar bills introduced in Florida, Kansas, Maine and Rhode Island. Wildfi re danger elevated, offi cials says By Lou Varricchio

newmarketpress@denpubs. com MIDDLEBURY — By the week ending May 4, firefighters around the region had responded to over a dozen serious wildfires directly related to the dry and breezy conditions which settled across Vermont by mid April. Grass fires in places such as Sudbury, Middlebury, West Haven, and Ludlow were extinguished before they became unmangeable. According to Mark Bosma of the Vermont Department of Public Safety, “persistent dry and windy weather in the state has made grass, brush and leaves susceptible to uncontrolled fires, but common sense and caution by all Vermonters can prevent wildfires.” Bosma said dry conditions were expected to continue during this week. “Local fire departments throughout the state have responded to several wildfires already this season,” he noted. Bosma said officials from his department, as well as those from the Vermont Division of Fire Safety and Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation, have been contacting the news media and local town governments about the increased potential for wildfires. “In general, debris burning is the leading cause of wild land fires in Vermont,” according to a news statement released by Bosma. “These fires cause property damage; lost natural resources; and like all fires, can result in a loss of life. Most people never intend to start a wildfire and can avoid this by choosing a day to burn when fire danger is low – and such days are not” in the immediate forecast. If burning a large agricultural area, officials ask you to please check with your local fire department for advice about burning it safely.

Lake Champlain Bridge from page 1

Lake Champlain Bridge corridor, welcomed news of the awards. “We’re very pleased,” said Chris Stoddard of the coalition. “The awards bring greater attention to the bridge and the region. That’s always our goal.” The new bridge replaced the old Lake Champlain Bridge, which served the region eight decades. That span was immediately closed Oct. 16, 2009, when state transportation officials, without warning, declared it unsafe. The bridge served about 3,000 vehicles a day, meaning people who used the bridge daily to reach their jobs, health care facilities, grocery stores and other necessities were forced to take detours lasting up to four hours. The closing led to the closure of businesses on both sides of the lake and crippled tourism. A temporary ferry service was installed to link Crown Point and Addison, Vt. The bridge was demolished in December 2009 and construction started on a new bridge in June 2010. The new bridge opened Nov. 7, 2011. The new Network Tied Arch Bridge is a steel structure with an arch along the center span. The bridge’s design makes it significantly safer than the previous structure and will ensure at least a 75-year service life. Key bridge components are designed to be easily replaceable to reduce maintenance costs. Travel lanes are 11 feet wide, with five-foot shoulders that help accommodate larger trucks and farm vehicles, as well as provide ample room for bicyclists. Sidewalks are featured on both sides of the bridge. The eight-story, 402-foot long, 1.8 million pound arch was constructed at Velez Marine in Port Henry, then floated down the lake and lifted into place. Building the arch on land was much faster, easier and costefficient than trying to safely build the arch high in the air above Lake Champlain. The new bridge was built at the same location as the previous structure to minimize historic and environmental impacts on the surrounding area. The land adjacent to the bridge on both sides of the lake is historically sensitive, with Native American, French and Indian War and Revolutionary War artifacts buried deep along the shores of Lake Champlain. The ruins of 18th century forts – the French Fort St. Frederic and British Crown Point sit on the New York side of the bridge.
