newmarketpress@denpubs.com WEST RUTLAND — On Monday, members of the Vermont State Police Search and Rescue Team, the Rutland County Sheriff’s Department, Vermont Fish and Game, the Vermont National Guard and New England K9 were continuing their search efforts for the reported possible endangered juvenile female on the West Proctor Road in Rutland Town. At press time, police told the Eagle that the missing girl report was not amber status. At the time of this filing, no juvenile female had been located in the search area nor has the Vermont State Police received any reports of a missing six- or sevenyear-old female. Investigators had also been in contact with the surrounding states and at this time there are no reported missing persons matching the description of the juvenile in those areas. Police told reporters that a female motorist telephoned 911 May 9 after an allegedly sacred, injured girl approached a car. Police released little else to the public. Detectives with the Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation continued to explore all investigatory possibilities and opportunities. Woodchuck unveils new Middlebury site By Lou Varricchio
newmarketpress@denpubs.com MIDDLEBURY — Officials of Woodchuck Hard Cider—a brand of apple cider made by Vermont Hard Cider Company, LLC—gave members of the news media an overview of its new, $30 million Middlebury cidery May 10. Reporters were on hand at the construction site to hear details about the project and its impact on both the cider company and the local community. The construction site is adjacent to the Bridge School, near the intersection of Exchange Street and U.S. Route 7. Woodchuck President and CEO Bret Williams, as well as Middlebury Town Manager Kathleen Ramsay were keynote speakers along with other company, town and state officials. The VIPs in attendance were upbeat about the project and its positive, longrange impact on the economy of Addison County and beyond. Williams unveiled scale design drawings of the facility which will be completed next spring. The Eagle will publish the plans in a future issue. Woodchuck began in 1990 in a Proctosville winery and later moved its operation to Springfield. It produced a variety of apple wines and ciders, according the CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

PITTSFORD — The Rutland County Humane Society is sponsoring two major fundraising events this month at its location at 765 Stevens Rd. in Pittford—the Kittens, Kittens Everywhere Auction is now under way, and then on Saturday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the RCHS Yard Sale event will help raise money for homeless animals in Rutland County. The auction is filled with merchandise, useful services and uniîque experiences. The public’s participation will help the animal shelter care for kittens which arrive at the shelter during the spring and summer months. During the RCHS Yard Sale event, visitors will find a wide selection of “treasures” and funds raised will help programs at RCHS. There will also be a bake sale to raise additional money. newmarketpress@denpubs.com HINESBURG — A spokesperson from Fletcher Allen Health Care said Clinton Norris, 16, of Hinesburg died Sunday, May 12, the result of an all-terrain vehicle crash. Due to privacy rules, the hospital did not release details of the accident and death. The teen was found by a parent near Buck Hill Road West at 4:30 a.m. May 11, according to Hinesburg Community Police. Police said the ATV crash occurred within a half mile from teen’s home.

newmarketpress@denpubs.com RUTLAND — The Office of Vermont Attorney General reported that former Rutland city attorney Christopher Sullivan pleaded “not guilty” to charges connected to a fatal hit-and-run which occurred April 10 in Rutland. Last week, local police blocked off a portion of downtown to reconstruct the accident. Facing a possible 30-year prison sentence, Sullivan had been cited to appear in Vermont Superior Court Rutland Criminal Division May 2 to answer to charges. According to reporters in the courtroom, Sullivan’s attorney entered the pleas on behalf of his client. They also reported that Sullivan was freed on a $10,000 bond. The charges against Sullivan included leaving the scene of an accident with death resulting, and driving under the influence with death resulting, according to Vermont Assistant Attorney Gen. Cindy Maguire.
Arrest in Bristol vehicle thefts By Lou Varricchio
newmarketpress@denpubs.com BRISTOL — As members of the Bristol Police Department continue investigating reports of vehicles that were broken into along Elm and Pleasant streets, as well as along Taylor Avenue, an arrest has been made. During the course of the investigation, K. Chaloux, 22, of Bristol was arrested by police. Chaloux was charged for four counts of petty larceny along with a single count of possession of stolen items. Police were able to return most of the stolen items to vehicle owners Chaloux did not have the required $500 to make bail and was imprisoned at the Chittenden County Correctional Center. He was set to see an Addison County judge this week. Even though Chaloux was arrested, Bristol police are continuing the investigation. If other residents had vehicles broken into on or around April 22-23, they should call the BPD at 802-4532533.

VERGENNES — The Little City art scene, much like its namesake community, is “small” compared to big metro areas such as Montreal and Boston, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in vision, heart, soul and vibrancy. From the Vergennes Opera House to Creative Space Gallery, Main Street in Vergennes is the nexus between a growing number of delightful venues. Just off Main Street, at 37 Green St., is the new Outerlands Gallery. This contemporary downtown art gallery will officially open to the public May 25— the first day of Vermont Open Studio Weekend 2013—with an open house running from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The gallery will also participate in the Open Studio Weekend during both days of its run, May 2526. According to gallery owners Cat Cutillo and Ross Sheehan, Outerlands exhibits both local and national artists and crafters. We’re sure it will be grow to become a lively, creative space in the coming months. The gallery itself is a work of art, architecturally. It’s a renovated former 19th century carriage house that looks a smidge like a colorful Provincetown bungalow. In fact, Cutillo and Sheehan describe their circa 1800s gallery as “a modern bungalow gallery.” According to the gallery’s own publicity, some of the space’s handcrafted furniture uses reclaimed wood from the renovation work. Regarding their gallery, Cutillo and Sheehan should be applauded for bringing a fresh, chromatic vibe to an otherwise monochrome, typically staid downtown area. The gallery, we’re told, has “an eclectic mix of large abstract paintings, distinctive landscapes, innovative metal sculptures, traditional blacksmithing, photography, wearable art and handcrafted furniture—both in traditional

I
A capital idea
t occurred to me recently that the only way ‘we the people’ might be able to regain a new perspective on the sane, practical running of our republic is to move our nation’s capital. I am not being flippant by making this radical suggestion. But I admit that I am not sure if it’s the correct thing to do. Still, I think it’s time to consider where the center of our population is located. And is it also time to shake up our less-than-satisfying political system enough to make a physical change? Maybe a change of scenery will set the patient on a path to recovery. Now assuming that our legislators, judges, and special interest seekers do not conspire to reinterpret, revise, or throw out our precious Constitution in the interim, perhaps the only way to break up the moribund “gentlemen’s club” that is D.C. is to send everyone packing to a new capital—or capitals—in the nation’s hinterlands. Why not move the spreading seats of our federal government out of the District of Columbia? And in the process, we’ll return the territory of the District back to the states of Maryland and Virginia from which it was formed. Is this a crazy idea? I hear your objection. What would such a move cost? Well, don’t talk to me of the expense of such a project; we’ve squandered billions on other efforts less vital to the nation’s survival. For several years at the start of these United States, New York City (1785 to 1790) and Philadelphia (1790 to 1800) served as U.S. capitals before Southern leaders forced the establishment of the D.C. capital. And consider that in 1783 Congress wanted to establish two capitals—one in the “north” in New Jersey, along the Delaware, and one in the “south” along the Potomac (not too far from today’s capital). So, it is not unheard of to relocate our nation’s capital when we need to. My daydream of a new capital is not to build yet another Nova Roma, but rather to establish a truly American city for the 21st century with connections to the people through organic, wired architecture, not mausoleums of the past. I am thinking less of Brazil’s capital Brasilia and more of South Africa’s three capitals. My idea is to get away from our 20th century mindset of “big,” “stand alone,” and “bureaucratic” federal government and establish a new capital that reflects our true, founding ideals— individual freedom and little or no government interference.
A new capital would reflect more who we are as a people today. I have no special desire of things South African, but I do like that nation’s trio of capitals. Government officials are forced to change their perspectives, their landscapes, on a regular basis by traveling back and forth for various functions. South Africa has three capital cities: Cape Town is the seat of the nation’s parliament, making it the legislative capital. Pretoria, is where the president and cabinet members live, making it the administrative capital. And Bloemfontein is the judicial capital where the nation’s supreme court resides. Perhaps there’s more logic in having three capitals in South Africa than over here; perhaps that’s because the founding of South Africa’s capitals reflected a need to mix Afrikaners and English peoples spread across a vast territory, or for the fact that yearly temperature changes between the three places offered some relief to government members. I am not strongly suggesting that there should be three capitals of the USA, but there are many lessons to be learned for not perpetuating our bloated, self-absorbed island capital, which stands a part from “we the people” as Washington does today. Where would a new U.S. capital be built? Some political visionaries have already suggested Colorado (Denver). Others have suggested Hartsville, Mo., which will be the statistical center of the U.S. population in the year 2020. My suggestion would be to erect a new capital some place in the central Midwest where most federal politicians only fly over now. So here’s the 500-pound gorilla in the room: what to do with all those vacant Washington, D.C. buildings? Well, I am sure there’d be some creative use for them—perhaps as museums, places of education, places of commerce, maybe even as rock quarries? I haven’t figured that problem out just yet. But it’s a problem we all face when we want to simplify and downsize our lives to become more in touch with who we are and what’s most important, our center. I don’t especially admire American business magnate Warren Buffett, but I do like some of his worldly logic some of the time. “In a chronically leaking boat,” Buffett once said, “energy devoted to changing vessels is more productive than energy devoted to patching leaks.” Lou Varricchio

Park ranger admits to stealing park funds By Lou Varricchio
newmarketpress@denpubs.com CASTLETON — On Sept. 28, the Vermont State Police received a complaint regarding a possible theft of state park funds. Detectives from the Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations were contacted to investigate the incident. Through the course of the investigation detectives learned that state park officials contacted Ranger John Robert Davine, 28, of Rutland, the park ranger at Bomoseen State Park, who could not explain the discrepancies in the state park accounting balances. Davine admitted to detectives, as well as to a state park official, that he had stolen several thousand dollars money from the park between April and September 2011. WALLINGFORD — On May 7, at approximately 11:45 p.m., officers of the Vermont State Police from the Rutland Barracks responded to a single vehicle crash on US Route 7 in Wallingford. State Police investigation determined the operator, Jeffrey Reilly, 39, of Rensselaer, N.Y., was driving under the influence. Reilly was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the State Police barracks in Rutland for processing. Reilly was released on a citation to appear at the Rutland Superior Court Criminal Division at a later date and time.

FERRISBURGH — Between April 25 and April 26, motor vehicles belonging to Susan McKibben were entered on her property along Old Hollow Road in Ferrisburgh. newmarketpress@denpubs.com NEW HAVEN — For Ron and Gina Dedrick, owning and operating an idyllic Vermont bed and breakfast is a dream come true. The Dedricks purchased the historic Crossroads Bed and Breakfast, located along U.S. Route 7 in New Haven, in 2006. In the years since the couple opened their home to guests, they’ve met a colorful spectrum of people ranging from tourists and college visitors to spiritual seekers and traveling business people. The B&B, built as a farmhouse in 1860, stands on rich agricultural land originally deeded to Nathan Barton of New Haven in 1792. The exterior of the seven-room B&B includes a meditative water garden, a vast lawn on which to ramble, and a wide veranda with views of two mountain ranges. “You can watch the sun rise over the Green Mountains and watch it sink over the Adirondack High Peaks from either outside and inside the house,” Ron said. Long familiar with Vermont as avid skiers from their native New Jersey, the Dedricks began dreaming of living in the Green Mountain State during the 1990s. Being motorcyclists, too, they began exploring backroads of the state during the warm months of summer and early autumn. “We used to live in Monmouth County, N.J., before moving here,” Ron added. “When the price was right in the Jersey real estate market, we sold our house and made the move. We wondered if we could do it and we said ‘yes’. We purchased Crossroads and never looked back.” The Dedricks had no prior experience in the hospitality field, but they must have had a business-saavy guardian angel from the start. “I was—and still am—a paralegal, and Ron was—and still is—a sales and marketing person,” according to Gina. “Here at the B&B, Ron is our marketing person and handyman, and I keep the books as well as do the cooking.”

Gina may be modest about her cooking, but Crossroads guests consider her a treasured gourmet chef. One of the highlights of a stay at Crossroads B&B is—aside from the at-home feeling of the place—is one of Gina’s meals, prepared in the big, well-stocked kitchen. “Our three-course breakfast features seasonal fresh fruit and delicious homemade muffins,” Gina said. “Your final course could consist of one of our specialties—baked Finnish pancake served with strawberries and Vermont maple syrup, or ham strata, or ham quiche. Most dishes are accompanied with cob smoked bacon or bacon from a local smoke house. We offer gourmet coffee, tea and juice, too. Nearly all of the food products we serve are local.”
According to the Dedricks, the couple share a variety of housekeeping tasks to keep their traditional New England B&B cozy and welcoming. “When we first opened in 2006 we were very lucky,” Ron said. “I kid you not—our first booking was a full house. It was Parents Weekend at Middlebury College and we’ve been meeting wonderful people ever since.” When asked if the circa-1860 structure is haunted, the Dedricks confirmed that there may be something afoot in the B&B. Stories about a “ghost” in the old New Haven house have been rumored over the years. “Well, I am not sure if I believe it,” said Gina, “but I can tell you that some guests have said so.”
On our tour of the Crossroads conducted by Ron and Gina, we discovered a cool rathskeller with a lounge, bar and pool table, a large cheery sun porch with guest dining tables, even a sixhole golf course out back, although it’s rarely used. Each bedroom on the upper two floors of the B&B has its own style; in fact, several repeat guests request the same, favorite room year after year. “All our bedrooms are welcoming and cozy,” according to Ron. “All rooms on the second floor share two full bathrooms. The third floor suite has a half bath.” Here’s the low down on each room— •The Elephant Mountain Room has a sweeping eastern view. It’s named for the nearby ridge that resembles an elephant lying down. •The Southern Exposure Room has a bright, southern view. •The Mt. Philo Room has great views of the high promontory—once an island in the prehistoric Champlain Sea—to the north as well as modern Lake Champlain and the valley. •Tyler’s Room has a southern view and is somewhat of a mystery. Ron wonders: “Who is Tyler and why is his room so comfortable?” •The Mount Abe Room is named for the highest peak to the east. •The Sweet West Room is the largest room with a queen and full-size bed as well as a half bath. •The Small Package and Suite West rooms are compact and cozy and have two single beds. “Both rooms together are perfect for a family,” Gina noted. Mildew disease impacting Vermont garden businesses By Lou Varricchio
newmarketpress@denpubs.com BRANDON — Workers at Vermont garden centers and nurseries are reeling in the latest bad news to hit the New England plant world—the University of Vermont Plant Diagnostic Clinic has identified a new destructive disease infecting the highly popular impatiens garden plant; it’s called downy mildew. The nasty plant disease had been confirmed in 33 states, including all the England states. “This fungus-like pathogen, known scientifically as Plasmopora obducens, is very host specific and attacks only common garden impatiens—scientific name Impatiens walleriana. This causes rapid defoliation during wet, cool weather,” according to Dr. Ann Ha-
zelrigg, UVM’s plant pathologist. Hazelrigg alerted gardeners that if their impatiens died early last year, it’s likely that the new disease was to blame. “The first symptoms of the disease are yellowing in the leaves, often with the leaf margins curling downward,” according to Hazelrigg. “An obvious white downy-like coating will appear on the leaf undersides when conditions are cool—60 to 73 degrees Fahrenheit—and moist or humid.” Hazelrigg said that when sporangia germinate, the plants release thousands of “swimming spores” called zoospores. “These spores can swim in moisture on the leaf surface and infect tissue,’. she noted. Garden centers in the region are reacting to the news. Nearly all the centers the Eagle talked to are not selling impatiens this year. “This is making a huge impact on the gar-
den business,” said Tom Sabatini, owner of Pinewood Gardens in Brandon. Sabatini said that the problem first started in Florida and has now hit Vermont. They said a lot of customers like to buy impatiens which make a colorful splash in Vermont gardens. Now, Sabatini and his co-owner wife Beverly, have to educate their customers about the mildew disease. Sabatini, as well as other garden center experts, noted that the New Guinea impatiensis is resistant to the disease as are all other bedding plants sold at garden centers in the region. Downy mildew isn’t only a problem for avid gardeners. It’s also a problem for Vermont agriculture. Downy mildew was one of the major reasons for the decline of hops production in Vermont over a century ago, according to Ha-
zelrigg. “Downy mildew can cause the complete loss of marketable yield, and even hill death in sensitive hop varieties,” she said. How can Vermont gardeners fight the fungus? Hazelrigg advises that, “although the disease can be managed with fungicides in the greenhouse, this is neither practical nor recommended in home landscapes. Avoid replanting impatiens where they were planted the previous season.” While the short-term treatment of the disease looks promising, the long-term prognosis is not good. Middlebury bookshop is now the state’s largest By Lou Varricchio
newmarketpress@denpubs.com MIDDLEBURY — When the late Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges said “that Paradise must be a kind of library,” he must have been thinking about Monroe Street Books in Middlebury. A recent shipment of gently used children’s books has pushed the bookstore into the record books of books. Monroe Street Books, located two miles north of downtown Middlebury on U.S. Route 7, seems to have tipped the scales at approximately 160,000 volumes; it might even have eclipsed the state’s biggest academic library at the University of Vermont in total numbers of volumes. “I would think we’re probably now the largest bookshop in Vermont,” said owner Dick Chodkowski. “We’re around 160,000 volumes.” Books in the store include fiction and nonfiction and just about every sub genre you can imagine. Chodkowski spent much of his professional life in Los Angeles, Calif., working in both the worlds of advertising and art. He and his wife Flanzy, who worked in Hollywood as a motion-picture promoter and screenplay novelizer, left southern California during the early 1990s. They wanted to flee the grime and crime of La-La Land for the greener pastures of Vermont. In addition to overseeing the mammoth bookstore, Chodkowski creates a line of humorous greeting cards which are featured at the store. Last week’s big arrival of children’s books should be news for parents and kids alike. “It’s all good stuff,” Chodkowski noted. “And we have all the great children’s books writers—from Beatrix Potter and Dr. Suess to Maurice Sendak and Jaimie Lee Curtis, and more. These are series books, chapter books and picture books.” To celebrate the new arrivals, Chodkowski said he is offering
50 percent off every in-store children’s book title and then 20 percent off of all other in-store books, online books excluded. According to our research, it was rock musician Frank Zappa who coined the phrase,“So many books, so little time.” He, like fellow bibliophile Borges, must have been thinking of Monroe Street Books, too.

Ok, we’re just kidding—and we well remember what happened to Orson Welles after his 1938 “War of the Worlds” broadcast— but when you step through the doors of Whirlie’s World Family Entertainment Center on Exchange Street in Middlebury, don’t be surprised if you see flashing lights and extraterrestrial-like apparitions; just remind yourself that what you’re seeing is only a game of high-tech laser tag. Vermont’s premiere indoor laser tag arena was unveiled this month at the Middlebury entertainment center marking a special chapter in the regional gaming craze. Whirlie’s World laser tag activity is a one-of-a-kind game that was custom designed for the popular Addison County indoor entertainment hub. being a safe, comfortable indoor sport, laser tag can be played
year round. The indoor sci-fi game and accompanying arena, called “Alien Storm”, replaces the play center’s mini golf course. The laser tag operation was custom designed for Whirlie’s World owner Nerf Neff (Nerf is a nickname) by an awardwinning Florida game company. And Whirlie’s World, we are told, is named after the owner’s father, attorney and artist Whorely “Whirlie” John Neff, Jr. who passed away in 2008. The game of “Alien Storm” laser tag uses hand-held light phaser devices and nifty electronic vests. The black, synthetic vests, worn by all game participants, are equipped with light-sensitive sensors as well as flashing, light-emitting diodes for purposes of tracking your opponents. The object of laser tag is to “tag” opponents with a narrow beam of harmless photon particles that are emitted by a battery powered, hand-held phaser. Each phaser is corded to the game vest, so a player
never has to worry about dropping or losing the device during the game. Players score during the game based on both the number of tags and their accuracy. It’s a game of real skill where players can participate either one-on-one or in teams with up to 12 players. The activity is ideal for families, classmates, even area businesses looking for a novel team-building exercise. According to Neff, “Inside our maze-like arena players encounter fantastic sci-fi art figures, strategically placed glowing barriers, arches, and pathways—and it’s all intensified with safe black lighting and an exciting techno soundtrack. It’s fun for the whole family and you get a good workout while you play.” Neff said a game master helps suit up the players in an outer “airlock” area and then reads the game’s rules of engagement and behavior. Neff said players will be evicted if they violate Whirlie’s World basic game rules. “Players will have a ball,” he said. “They will navigate through hazy passage ways of our black lit arena while high energy music mutes the sound of the opposition game players. In addition to the new “Alien Storm,” Whirlie’s World is a mix of state-of-theart interactive electronic arcade games, ticket-redemption games, old-fashioned foosball, air hockey, bounce houses, a padded jousting and boxing arena, and a concession stand serving everything from popcorn and hot dogs to creamies and pizza—all perfect for parties and group activities. “Whirlie’s is fun for everyone,” according to Neff. “You can bring your pal, a date, or a spouse here.” Neff said, in addition to laser tag, visitors can try their hand at classic games such as air hockey and foosball. “Adults tell us Buckhunter is a blast and we have SkeeBall, Roulette Twirl, basketball, and a new game, called Fruit Ninja, played on a 46foot touch screen; it’s popular with young and old alike.
