Strickland Jr., CEO of Manchester Bidwell Corporation, traced his successful career to one moment when a teacher changed his life. “Once upon a time, I was an inner-city public school student, failing academically and totally adrift,” Strickland said, “and was lucky enough to meet an art teacher named Frank Ross who was an accomplished potter. I saw him make a ceramic vessel in class one day and it was a defining moment and magical experience that altered my life permanently.”
By Lou Varricchio MIDDLEBURY — Whose “War on Women” is it anyway? Vermont Republicans are asking why U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders' “gender pay gap” at his senatorial offices is at 47.6 percent, after a report claimed the independent senator's public relations misstep. Sanders, who caucuses with the Democrats, has the worst gender gap in Washington, D.C., by far, according to a report by the online Washington Free Beacon last week. "He employed more men (14) than women (10), and his chief of staff is male," according to Andrew Stiles of the Free Beacon. "Like many of his fellow partisans, he has previously accused Republicans of trying to roll back the clock on women’s rights," he said. Stiles' report also revealed that of the five senators who participated in a recent press conference about women's pay—Barbara Mikulski (D., Md.), Patty Murray (D., Wash.), Debbie Stabenow (D., Mich.), Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.) and Barbara Boxer (D., Calif.)—three pay their female staff members significantly less than their male staffers. "Women working for Senate Democrats in 2011 pulled in an average salary of $60,877. Men made about $6,500 more," Stiles reported.

Vergennes teen arrested May 26 BRISTOL — On May 26, Vermont State Police troopers responded to a vandalism complaint located at 1 Lane Bridge on Route 116 in Bristol. Further investigation led to the arrest of Tracie Taylor, 18, of Vergennes for unlawful mischief.

MIDDLEBURY — Sometimes you can’t buy local — at least in quantity, but there are always local sources to help get the job done. In the case of a promising new ginger-flavored hard cider made by Woodchuck in Middlebury, the task was to procure organic ginger in quantities for a serious commercial operation. Let’s face it, Vermont is not known for its organic ginger crop. According to Woodchuck officials, the brewer contacted both the Middlebury Food Co-op and Vermont-based vegetable distributor Black River Produce, to bring the yellow ginger from Hawaii to the Green Mountains. Hawaii’s Big Island is one of the few places that grows an organic ginger crop in quantity. The crop is in season during the spring and summer months on the island. Rich volcanic soil plus abundant sunshine and rainfall makes Hawaii the premiere local for ginger growing, organic or otherwise. Woodchuck began in 1991 with its classic Amber apple cider. The innovative Middlebury company prides itself with a tradition of handcrafted quality. Hawaiian ginger will be a key ingredient in Woodchuck’s adult Private Reserve Ginger beverage which was unveiled last week.

Maritime Museum launches 32-foot rowing boat FERRISBURGH — On May 24, the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum ceremoniously launched the newly built 32-foot rowing gig Annie B. Over 200 people were on hand to watch the student boat builders speak about their experience in the Champlain Longboats program and then launch new boat. Annie B. led a rowing parade of five colorful rowing boats built at LCMM and rowed by area youth. Eight students and three staff from the Diversified Occupations Program at the Hannaford Career Center in Middlebury worked full time in the Museum’s boat shop for five months with Museum staff and volunteers to build this magnificent boat. Annie B. is the thirteenth boat of this type built by LCMM working with regional High School students. The Maritime Museum offers popular after-school rowing programs for area middle and high schools, and Community Rowing for adults in these student-built boats.

Middlebury College men's golf wins NESCAC Championship MIDDLEBURY –The Middlebury College men’s golf team successfully defended its status as the NESCAC golf champions last week at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Mass. The Panthers, who have now won four of the last six conference crowns, managed to increase their single-stroke lead over Williams following day one by seven and finished with a two-day total of 626. Williams, which had earned the right to host the spring championship round on its home course following a first place finish at the NESCAC fall qualifier last October, came in second with a score of 634. Trinity, the 2010 NESCAC champions, were third with 645, while Hamilton placed fourth with a total of 656. A bright and sunny Sunday at Taconic proved to be very challenging for the 20 individual competitors, as high winds dominated play for much of the day. Middlebury, which had the day one low score of 309, saw its score balloon on day
two to 317. Even still, the Panthers managed to best the field by seven strokes. William Prince of Middlebury earned medalist honors at the spring championship for the second year in a row. Tied for sixth after day one with a score of 78, Prince shaved four strokes off his total for an impressive 74 (+3) on day two given the conditions and carded a final score of 152 (+10). Prince's second round score was the lowest on Sunday and only one of four below 80. Rob Donahoe finished the tournament tied for fourth place along with teammate Eric Laorr, who both shot 157. Chris Atwood ended the weekend in a 10th place tie with a pair of 80s, while Max Alley was tied for 12 with a 164. Middlebury receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which will be held on May 15-18 at the Mission Inn Resort & Club located in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

Ray with golden fulgence leavens
“
I can hardly believe it. We were just talking about you,” I said to awardwinning science fiction author Ray Bradbury. The man of letters was standing next to me, slightly shorter than I had imagined, but still a robust man, perhaps in his early 50s. He was radiating imaginary worlds in space and fantasias of the mind as we talked. “Someone said that you were dead, I knew that you were still alive—but 92 years old and confined to a wheelchair,” I added. Ray stood fully erect wearing a brown corduroy jacket and a black turtleneck, as I recall. Very literary. I thought he looked exactly as he appeared on the dustcover photograph of an illustrated edition of “The Martian Chronicles” I cherished as a youth. So why did I have to mention his being confined to a wheelchair? “You know, you were very kind to me when I was a college student in 1974. I wrote you letters and you replied. I am in awe of you,” I said. Ray nodded. His eyeballs, which appeared tiny, were floating in the center of the thick, bottlelike lenses of his horn-rimmed eyeglasses. “I still have the letters,” I added somewhat embarrassingly. This much appeared true to me at the moment. “They are personal treasures. You offered me writing advice and complimented me on a clipping I mailed of a science-news article I wrote for the campus paper. You wrote your comments on personalized letterhead which, as I still see it in my mind’s eye, had a wonderful letterhead graphic embossed in blue ink—a fanciful, cutaway view of a gothic mansion with many rooms, filled with creatures from your midnight mind.” Ray didn’t seem to process what I had just said. “Some of the people—the ones I was talking with—well, they didn’t give a damn about rocketships or beasts from 20,000 fathoms,” I said as we were moving along, human hovercrafts on pockets of dense air. “Well, I have never listened to anyone who criticized my taste in space travel, sideshows or gorillas,” Bradbury replied.
“When this occurs, I pack up my dinosaurs and leave the room.” Ray was brilliant yet what he had said sounded awfully familiar. How was I so lucky to have Ray Bradbury here all to myself? Still something was off-kilter. And what were we doing walking in downtown Middlebury? Was Ray in town for an interview with the local newspaper I edited? I doubted it. Be that as it may, there I was with a great mind, America’s poet laureate of science fiction and the imagination—our generation’s Poe. “You mentioned Vermont in several short stories...” I said. “Never visited the place,” he replied. “But I love Vermont Avenue in Los Angeles. I love the name, too. Vermont. It conjures up idyllic hilly places of the mind like the Ohio and Illinois of my stories.” We stopped, perched on the edge of a curb. “There’s our community library,” I said proudly, pointing a strangely hooked finger across a dandelion-covered lawn in the direction of the Ilsley Public Library’s front portico. “It reminds me of your library in ‘Dandelion Wine’—standing in a small town in a land of endless August days with long, lazy afternoons filled with books and kids heading off to swimming holes.” He took the lead and crossed the lawn that used to be Main Street. “I read everything in the library,” Ray replied, as if reading from a prepared script. “Growing up I read everything in the Los Angeles Public Library. I took out 10 books a week so I had a couple of hundred books a year I read, on literature, poetry, plays, and I read all the great short stories, hundreds of them. I graduated from the library when I was 28 years old. That library educated me, not the college.” I knew that Ray had never attended college, proof that knowledge, even wisdom, aren’t guaranteed by the traditional Latin words on a baccalaureate diploma. We climbed the library’s marble steps and entered the lobby. No one seemed to notice us at the circulation desk. Truth be told, there was no one at the desk; the place was empty, tomblike. Trust funders and other Vermonters
C
hecking in real quick here a day before I take off for New Mexico and my annual sister visit. I might take a couple additional nights in NYC in late September to see some city friends, but that’ll be it for my yearly vacating, because there’s nothing I want to vacate, really. Anyway, I’m outa here tomorrow. Was in Hartland for a Farm Festival last weekend. The library green hosted a couple dozen booths full with farmers touting their beef, goat milk, soap, and baked goods. Thirsty, I bought tea from a lady whose booth also offered, muffins, and bread. I wasn’t eating cause I’d be going to a cookout that evening, but the bread was so beautiful, I thought I might buy a loaf, just cause. Not just cause just cause, but just cause it must be tough raising a kid on bread sales, so I felt like helping out the 40ish year-old lady and her junior high age daughter. Then I did a horrible thing, I decided not to buy a loaf because my friend had two days earlier shared with me a detailed account of how in her classically beautiful, remember-when type Vermont town, the folks with kids in the private school are for the most part … all, she said anyway-trust funders. Now, before you get after me let me say, I have not one single thing against trustfunders. I could assed care how much $ you have, or what you have or have not done to get it. In fact I’m a minority. I’m one who’ll not convict on account of a hefty bank account. I like rich people. I give the two millionaires Mitt and Barack their due, and they’re both rich. Those preferring Barack feel his richness is about the right amount of richness, the amount just under when rich is a bothersome kind of rich, but hey, he’s still rich. Anyway, I blew it cause soon as I remembered what my friend told me about the trust funder (they bake a lot of stuff) situation in her town, I went from thinking the nice lady baker needed the dough, to thinking she baked the bread for fun, and she didn’t need the dough, probably, not as much as other bread sellers on site. And I choose to spend my money at a booth whose merchant looked like they might be in more need of the dough. Course, my decision was based on assumption. And that’s why I blew it. Me, the guy who actually likes rich people as much as I
like middle class and poor people, showed chauvinism against the lady cause I assumed she had a bit of dough, or at least wasn’t depending on my bread to eat. I’m a judgmental son of a gun, and don’t even know it. Phew, this column is a mouthful. It started as a simple nod to the lovely visit to New Mexico and my sister, now it’s a tongue-tied monologue. Be careful not to count other people’s money. Being the recipient of a trust fund could mean someone receives only a couple of hundred dollars a month, a number hardly instrumental in defining someone as being “loaded.” And what is “they’re loaded” but a general, broad term used to express self-shame for not having made more money ourselves. And I feel receipt of a monthly, or quarterly, or whateverly check, does not make life easier. In fact, it can make life harder. A trust funder might find self-motivation difficult to cultivate. They might also deal with guilt stemming from a “why me,” attitude that can cut them off from any desire to succeed, and or send them to a path using things to numb the senses. In fact, being a trust funder, in my opinion, which I’ve found is contrary to most other non-trust funder people’s opinion, might make success more difficult to obtain, in every realm of life. Being a “have” from day one is something I’d not choose if I had the chance. If I fail, so be it. If a “have” fails, it’s not okay … or so we’ll say. Just the same, between a trust funder bread maker and a non-trust funder bread maker, I’ll choose to buy from the non-trust funder. Ain’t that terrible? VERGENNES — A giant American flag was the star of the 2012 Vergennes Memorial Day Parade May 28. The flag was carried by local Elks Lodge members. The parade included the usual suspects: U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I), Gov. Peter Shumlin (D), State Sen. Randy Brock (R), Attorney General Bill Sorrell (D) and attorney general candidate T.J. Donovan.
The group enjoyed marching bands, floats and group of Civil War re-enactors. According to local reports, attendance broke recent years and vendors reported brisk sales of beverages along the parade route. The Vergennes parade is the largest holiday parade in Vermont as if often the kickoff spring-season event for political candidates during an election year, as was the case for several high-profile 2012 campaigners.

U.S. Forest ranger receives honors MIDDLEBURY — U.S. Forest Service (USFS) officials announced that Vermont resident Michael Klingensmith has been named the Eastern Region’s 2011 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. Klingensmith has served as a law enforcement officer assigned to the Rochester and Middlebury Ranger Districts of the Green Mountain National Forest since 2000. He served as a U.S. Park Ranger for the National Park Service for ten years before joining the U.S. Forest Service. Klingensmith was recognized not only for demonstrating a significant commitment to the agency and his profession, but also for earning the respect of his peers, the public and members of
cooperating law enforcement agencies. Klingensmith’s professionalism and dedication to public service is obvious to those that know and work with him. In August 2011, several small communities within the National Forest were without power and were not accessible by road for a week or more. In the initial response to the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Irene, Klingensmith and District Ranger Greg Smith identified possible routes for medical evacuations of critical patients across mountain roads that had not been used for decades. “Michael’s response in the crisis that followed Tropical Storm Irene is a testament to his professionalism and his ability to get things done.His actions
were critical to keeping employees and members of the local community safe and informed,” said Mary King, special agent for the U.S. Forest Service’s Eastern Regional Office. Because of Klingensmith’s knowledge of the Incident Command System, the Vermont State Police requested that he set up a command post in Stockbridge, Vt. Klingensmith organized public meetings, set up an emergency shelter, food and fuel distribution systems, two helispots, and a communications hub using a satellite internet connection in a private residence. Klingensmith, his wife, and family live in Rochester.

from page 4 Ray walked to a beautifully shellacked walnut cardfile cabinet, opened a drawer, and began fingering the cards which displayed typewritten titles, authors (last name first) and call numbers. Was he looking for his own books? And that’s when I knew that something was terribly wrong. It was the give away moment—when the beans are finally spilled. The public library hadn’t used an antiquated card-file system in years. The library catalog had been computer based for at least—what?—a decade or more, I guessed. With this revelation, things fell apart. Ray and the library around us began to break up, much like a pixelating digital-video image. That was the moment I knew there’d be no turning back. My meeting with Ray had been a sham. It had taken place within a dream. My instant friendship with the author who appeared from nowhere, our sharing a walk in downtown Middlebury, our shared time in the library was nothing but a neural vapor. No, no. Please. I didn’t want this meeting to end. Suddenly, I felt a hand shaking my shoulder. It was my wife, next to me in our bed. “You were talking in your sleep—again,” she said. “Oh. Sorry. Music superstar Travis Tritt to make Rutland debut RUTLAND — Officials of the Paramount Theatre announced May 29 that along with 105.3 Cat Country, they will welcome country music superstar Travis Tritt to the historic stage in downtown Rutland on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 8 p.m. Tickets went on sale online at ParamountLive.org May 29 and at the Paramount Theatre Box Office on Thursday, May 31. Tritt was one of the leading new country singers of the early ‘90s, holding his own against Garth Brooks, Clint Black, and Alan Jackson. He was the only one not to wear a hat and the only one to dip into bluesy Southern rock. Consequently, he developed a gutsy, outlaw image that distinguished him from the pack. In the early ‘90s, he had a string of platinum albums and Top Ten singles, including three number one hits. In 1989, Warner Brothers’ Nashville division signed Tritt, and his debut album, Country Club, appeared in the stores in the spring 1990. It was preceded by the Top Ten hit, “Country Club.� His next two singles, “Help Me Hold On� and “I’m Gonna Be Somebody,� hit number one and two respectively. “Put Some Drive in Your Country,� which had a clear rock and roll influence, stalled after rocketing to number four on the charts, since radio programmers were reluctant to feature such blatantly rock-derived music.

Local youth excel at karate tournament By Lou Varricchio
BRISTOL — Villari’s Self Defense and Wellness Center of Vermont has inspired hundreds of young people who have passed through its martial arts training program. Building mind and body, the center ’s Shaolin Kempo Karate program is the ideal outlet for a young person regardless of gender. On May 19, 70 young people gathered at Mount Abraham Union High School to show family and friends that they have the right stuff. It was a venue for students to showcase what they learned during the past year from their Shaolin Kempo Karate instructors. Master Laurie (Cousino) Shover of Bristol and Darrel Duffy, owners of Villari’s, hosted the tournament.
According to Shover and Duffy, students traveled from as far south as Rutland County and as far north as Franklin County to be a part of the action. The youngest competitors was only six years old and the oldest 13 years old, they said. Prior to this year ’s event, Duffy explained to parents that “positive” cheering is highly recommended but “negative” comments from the sidelines is not tolerated. “The tournament was not just about teaching sportsmanship and competition, but teaching young people to overcome their fears of being in front of large crowds and the pressure of public speaking. Sportsmanship is required and winners are not allowed to gloat and those that lost learn how to deal with the disappointment of not winning in a positive way,” Duffy said.

Welch, Shumlin show off their lake fish COLCHESTER — Not two minutes after Gov. Peter Shumlin (D) cast his line in the Fifth Annual LCI Governor's Cup, the Winooski River served the governor one of the day's largest fish in the May sunshine. Just a few minutes later, Congressman Peter Welch (D) pulled another good-sized rock bass from the same spot, while close by an osprey picked a fish out of the river. Although neither the congressman nor the governor took first place in the Lake Champlain International Governor's Cup this year, they were sure to remind everyone of how important Lake Champlain and Vermont's water are to our quality of life, communities, and economy. "Lake Champlain is one of Vermont's most important resources," said Shumlin while holding the esteemed LCI Governor's Cup. "The fishing in Lake Champlain is the best it's ever been," the Governor proclaimed. Nearly a dozen teams vied for the Governor's Cup this year, and almost every team weighed in at least one fish. In the end, though, the 2010 LCI Governor's Cup champions, Team Lanzetta of Colchester caught the most weight of fish for 2012, and brought home the Cup once again with an impressive 26 fish.

MONTPELIER – Vermont small businesses may be missing out on $45,644,000 annually in health care tax credits available under the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA) according to a new report released by Families USA and the Small Business Majority. The ACA provides for federal tax credits for small businesses with fewer than 25 full time employees and average annual wages of less than $50,000. The report estimates that in 2011 Vermont had approximately 10,350 small businesses eligible for the credit, employing 47,200 workers. The average credit per worker is estimated to be $966 annually. “We hear from small businesses all the time who want to provide health insurance to their employees but who are not able to do so. This tax credit could really help them. It also could free up money that small business owners could use

To qualify for the tax credit, the small business must pay for at least 50 percent of the employee’s health insurance premiums. The tax credit is worth up to 35 percent of the cost of the health insurance, increasing to 50 percent in 2014 when the Health Insurance Exchange is up and running. The tax credit is one tool the ACA offers small employers to make it easier to provide insurance. However, if they are not able to or chose not to, their employees will be able to buy insurance through the Exchange. Small businesses do not have to pay a penalty if they do not offer insurance. Premium tax credits are available for income up to 400 percent of the federal poverty level (FPL) and cost-sharing subsidies are available up to 250 percent. Approximately 400 percent FPL is $92,000 a year for a family of four and $45,000 for an individual.

Letters to the Editor Horses to the slaughter? To the editor: It appears a farm on U.S. Route 7 in Middlebury is collecting horses again for slaughter, including a paint mare and a brand new foal... I find it very interesting that this is within eyesight of the Bridge Elementary School. I think other people will be as horrified as I was to see a little foal, who will most likely not survive the long cruel journey to Canada anyway, standing alongside its' unsuspecting mother in that field with no shelter in this stormy weather, no shade in the blazing hot sun, most likely very little water. Exactly how much money will a person get for that tiny bit of meat? You covered this story a couple years ago... for violation of Vermont Agency of Agriculture criteria and I think it's time for a follow up. There are a lot of people in financial difficulty putting free horses on Craigslist and I don't believe someone getting those horses to either sell or ship for slaughter by law has to disclose that information.
I hope you will get on this right away and take photos of the foal before it is shipped. Unfortunately these particular horses are probably already doomed for a long and cruel ordeal. Thanks for your help in getting this out for public attention, it's urgent and important. Barbara Kaiser Cornwall
