LEICESTER — Fire struck a mobile home located at Cove Point June 13. The structure, located at 3256 Lake Dunmore Rd. in Leicester, was destroyed. The blaze displaced a family of four. Officials at the fire scene would not release the names of family members but they are reported to be safe. Members of a Red Cross Disaster Action Team were called to assist following the blaze. "The familt wishes to remain anonymous. Lodging wasn't needed but we are helping the family with food and clothing lost in the fire," said Doug Bishop of the Red Cross in Burlington. All American Red Cross disaster services are voluntary and are provided without charge.

Local residents receive college Citizens' Awards By Lou Varricchio

newmarketpress@denpubs.com MIDDLEBURY — Two Middlebury residents were honored for their outstanding community service and expertise by Middlebury College last week. Nancy Malcolm and Thomas Munschauer received Bonnie and John McCardell Citizens’ Awards for service within Addison County. All of the recipients of the Citizens’ Award receive a locally struck pewter medallion. According to a college news report, Nancy Malcolm distinguished herself with the Vermont Planners Association and the Northern New England Region chapter of the American Planners Association. At the college awards ceremony held on campus last week, it was stated that Malcolm had been an active force behind the United Way of Addison County. She served as the United Way board chairwoman. Malcolm was past president of the Porter Medical Center Auxiliary, a KidSpace Playground co-chairperson, Middlebury Area Creative Economy Group leader, and a board member of the Frog Hollow Arts Center (formerly of Middlebury), the Addison Respite Care Home, and Guardian See AWARDS, page 15

Construction loses 500 jobs in Vt; jobs report is anemic By Lou Varricchio

newmarketpress@denpubs.com

MIDDLEBURY — On June 15, the Vermont Department of Labor announced that the seasonally adjusted statewide unemployment rate for May 2012 was 4.6 percent. The state data for May show no change from the April statewide un-

employment rate. “The state job news is anemic at best,” according to jobs expert Phil Sternman of Jobs Plus Associates in St. Johnsbury. “It reflects Montpelier ’s inability to produce an aggressive jobs stimulation policy that is welcoming to business. With the state still being perceived as unfriendly to business, who would re-

ally want to relocate their manufacturing plant here?” National unemployment is on the rise, now at 8.2 percent, while Vermont unemployment remains flat. While Vermont may boast the fourth lowest unemployment rate in the U.S., the figures are nothing to brag about. The flat percentage number means

only a few new jobs have been created in Vermont, although the labor commissioner has tried to put a more positive spin on the data. “The May jobs numbers confirmed the volatility seen in April’s data, which was related to seasonal fluctuations,” according to Department of Labor Commissioner Annie See JOBS, page 15

Witches, warlocks and wizards

W

hat a difference four years makes. With our national economy mired in the doldrums, homeowners still stuck with devalued property, and a White House reelection campaign that can’t get much traction (at least with Republicans and more than a few independents) by blaming it all on the previous occupant, I was surprised to read an online news report which indicates that the AFL-CIO is less than excited about fullblown support of President Obama during the 2012 campaign. In 2008, the AFL-CIO vote was solidly in the Obama camp, thus, even a little hesitation by certain union leaders in 2012 gets my attention. Democrats, especially presidential candidates, have come to enjoy the solid, unquestioning support of the rank-and-file. Union members are often called upon to help get out the vote through their many community and labor networks. In 2008, sources estimated that unions supported the president’s successful “Hope and Change” campaign to the tune of $400 million. Let’s not forget that those big bucks helped elect and reelect Democrats from the national to the local level. But here in 2012, it’s not exactly clear if the AFL-CIO can be as solidly relied upon by the president’s campaign team. If one report noted last week is any indication, then something is going on causing a shift. Last week, an AFL-CIO official told the U.S. News and World Report’s online Washington Whispers blog—when asked about the organization making a specific dollar commitment to the president’s reelection bid—that it will “redeploy funds”. The comment indicates that the nation’s largest federation of unions may be growing a tad disillusioned with the president. “The shift has been in the works for months, and has nothing to do with the president's failure to show in Wisconsin, where labor unions led a failed recall election of Gov. Scott Walker,” according to Whispers. “We wanted to start investing our funds

in our own infrastructure and advocacy,” AFL-CIO spokesman Josh Goldstein told U.S. News and World Report’s Washington Whisper. “There will be less contributions to candidates, including President Obama.” According to Goldstein, quoted again in the same report, “this is not a slight at the president.” Really? It appears that the once well-concealed rift beween the AFL-CIO and the White House may be emerging as the campaign progesses into high gear. The rift, if you can call it that, predates the Wisconsin recall election. A disagreement seems to be linked to the public health insurance option and the Bush tax cuts (President Obama approved a two-year-extension of the Bush tax cuts in December 2010), issues of concern with the union leadership. It’s all rather unclear to me, but I gather that the AFL-CIO is now short $20 million after funneling a bundle to support the failed Democrat candidate during the recent Wisconsin gubernatorial recall election campaign. Then along comes the Rasmussen Reports with a very curious survey posted last week: GOP candidate Mitt Romney leads the president for the first time in Wisconsin—who would have thought this could be possible even a few weeks ago? The president's support in Wisconsin has dropped like the proverbial rock. Rasmussen found that a statewide telephone survey of likely voters shows Romney with 47 percent of the vote to Obama’s 44 percent. Five percent prefer some other candidate, and four percent are undecided. Is the president really in trouble? True, there are political shifts afoot in the land, but practicing the ancient art of tasseomancy this early in an election year is best left to the pros who know it best— witches, warlocks and wizards. The voters will have their say this November. Lou Varricchio

I’m over it already

W

ithout trying, my eyes and ears have caught wind of what will at the least be a second tier presidential campaign topic: Which candidate is more like us? Or as I’ll put it: Which candidate would be more likely to put up with spending time with us common folk without votes, ultimately many more millions of dollars of personal income, and years of power being at stake? On June 12 a CNN headline story, accompanied by a headshot of each the candidates asked, “Could you see them at your cookout?” No. I don’t see either guy at a cookout of mine. And that’s fine, that’s a point for each of them. Obama, the elite professor rich guy, and Romney the car elevator even-richer guy, are the type of guys I want as president. Guys who’d rather wow a hall full of business titans and Hollywood stars, then be like me and spend an hour looking on cigar.com for a sale priced cigar I can puff after dinner while I walk my property and pull poplar-lings from my fern fields. Come on with this whole “are the candidates out of touch with most Americans?” nonsense. I’m over it. Of course they are. It’s not even close man, and that’s just the type of guy we need as president, the type of guy who has spent countless years working hard as heck for the chance to walk up them painted red airplane steps and into a plane whose phone is a direct line to the On switch that could blow up half the planet. For that guy you don’t need me or anyone like me, the common guy, who isn’t sure including the cap on the plastic bottle is proper recycling protocol. Elite, rich, ultra successful, non slurpy

drinkin’, not coming over to my house for the tree trimming party kind of guy or gal, is who we need in the White House. So save us the faux common dude antics along the campaign please will you Barack and Mitt’s “people.” We’ve seen it all before, and even though we’re common, we ain’t buying it. And by the way, any of you who disagree with me and feel our President should be “like us,” I hope you’re not ones who also happen to be G.W. Bush haters, cause your least favorite guy routinely topped polls asking which candidate you’d like to have a beer with. Remember him? His everyday good ole quick reflex, shoe-ducking demeanor was what you hated for eight years. So, don’t tell me you want Barack and Mitt to be regular like G.W. Bush. You’re all going to vote for whom you like, whether he can play “regular guy” in front of the camera lens or not. Hear that campaign strategists, and spare your candidate a few hundred hot-dog photo-op bites along the way. Being president has got nothing to do with relating to the regular, cause if it did, we’d all be screaming, “Bring back G.W. Bush.” Rusty DeWees tours Vermont and Northern New York with his act “The Logger.” His column appears weekly.

SCOTUS decision fallout may get ugly To the editor: A leading leftist political group, Health Care for America Now, is mapping out a full bore media campaign to either celebrate or denounce the coming U.S. Supreme Court decision in the ObamaCare case, expected sometime in June. In the event – more likely than not, in my opinion - that the Court gives ObamaCare a serious hit, this campaign will ignore the constitutional basis of the decision and instead attack justices, Republicans, Tea Parties, free market think tanks, insurance companies (who supported ObamaCare), and a long list of villains who are not supportive of government run health care. In some states... this could get ugly. John McClaughry Monpelier

Kids, golf and the great outdoors By Lou Varricchio

newmarketpress@denpubs.com MIDDLEBURY — Teacher Carol Spaid Bergeron's recent Bristol Elementary School class field trip to the Ralph Myhre Country Club in Middlebury was more than a walk on the greens. Students had a genuine opportunity to learn about the game of golf including which clubs to use, how to hold a club and how to tee off. The Vermont First Tee National School Program made the field trip possible. “We have set a goal—100 elementary schools participating in The First Tee National School Program by the end of next school year,” said Richard Mihlrad, executive director of First Tee in Vermont. “We have 73 schools and counting. We are looking for golfers and teachers to recruit a new school for the upcoming school year.” Vermont First Tee Month is presented by MVP Health Care. Bristol students noticed the “Nike PD Long” logo golf balls, which each Bristol first tee'er received. In addition to the Bristol Elementary School, another Addison County school students joined the growing statewide youth golf initiative. Cedar Knoll Country Club in Hinesburg joined the Vermont First Tee program in May. Pictured: Students of Bristol Elementary School spent a day at the Ralph Myhre Country Club in Middlebury recently. The students learned about the game of golf, how to hold a club, how to tee off, as well as how maintenance crews work to keep the greens in perfect condition. Midd Actors to present comedy June 28-July 7 MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Actors Workshop presents “Circle Mirror Transformation,” Annie Baker's Obie Award winning comedy, June 28-July 7, at the Town Hall Theater in Middlebury. Baker, one of the hottest young playwrights on the national scene, has written a trilogy of plays set in the fictional town of Shirley, Vermont. In 2011, Middlebury Actors Workshop produced Baker's first Vermont play, “Body Awareness,” to sold-out houses. “Circle Mirror Transformation,” the second and most frequently produced of the trilogy, was the longest running play ever at Playwright’s Horizons in New York City when it won the 2010 Obie Award for best new American play. “Circle Mirror” follows a small group of New Englanders who enroll in a six-week-long community center drama class. During the course of the class, through theater games and exercises, hearts are quietly torn apart, and tiny wars of epic proportions are waged and won. The New York Times calls Baker's play “absorbing, unblinking and sharply funny” and “an absolute feast. “‘Circle Mirror Transformation’ is the kind of unheralded gem that sends people into the streets babbling and bright-eyed with the desire to spread the word." Washington D.C.-based director, and California State theater professor, Mark Ramont guest directs Middlebury's professional acting company in this luminous and unforgettable play. The cast features Middlebury Actors Workshop Artistic Director Melissa Lourie, Ethan Bowen, Kevin Commins, Jenny Gundy and Gianna Kiehl. Circle Mirror Transformation runs June 28-30 and July 5-7 at 8 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on July 1. Tickets, $20, with $10 Student Rush tickets at the door, are available through the Town Hall Theater Box Office at 382-9222, townhalltheater.org, or in person Monday–Saturday noon–5 p.m.

SPIFFY SIGN — Fifth- and sixth-graders at the Neshobe Elementary School headed up a school beautification project this year with help from teacher Katherine Tricarico. Students recognized the school needed a new sign. The children worked under the guidance of Winning Image Graphics to design and build it. The Brandon Zoning Commission helped the children place the sign and obtain a permit. Last week, students presented the project to the PTO, which funded the project. The sign was unveiled June 7 at the school's Celebration of Student Learning event. Photo by Marilyn Varricchio

Women's Tennis All-Americans: Leung is Rookie of the Year, Morgan is Coach of the Year From College News Reports

MIDDLEBURY — Three members of the Middlebury College women's tennis team were named All-Americans when the ITA announced the honors. Junior Leah Kepping (Northport, N.Y.) and rookie Lok-Sze Leung (Hong Kong) were named in singles play, while Kepping and junior Brittney Faber (Minnetonka, Minn.) earned the honor in doubles. In addition, Leung was named the ITA National Rookie of the Year, while head coach Mike Morgan was named the ITA National Coach of the Year. Leung had an impressive rookie season for the Panthers,

finishing the year with a record of 34-3. Last fall, she captured the ITA National Singles Title at the event held in Alabama. Her success continued in the spring, as she was named the NESCAC Player and Rookie of the Year, while earning second-team honors in doubles play. During NCAA play in May, Leung won four matches before falling in the national championship contest. Kepping earns singles honors after being named a secondteam All-NESCAC choice earlier this season. Playing at #3 this season for the Panthers, Kepping finished the year with a record of 24-6 with a 10-match winning streak. Kepping and Faber were named All-Americans in doubles

play for the second straight season. The two-time first-team All-NESCAC choices were reunited on March 10th as a doubles pair this spring. Following the change, they enjoyed a record of 16-4 and won 10 of their last 12 matches. Morgan earns coach of the year honors after leading the Panthers to a 15-4 mark this season. The Panthers hosted an NCAA Regional for the first time in school history, making their ninth NCAA appearance in the last 10 years. His team was ranked as high as fourth nationally this season, ending the year in the sixth spot. Now in his sixth season, Morgan was named the NESCAC Coach of the Year in 2008.

Jones earns All- Welch, Shumlin show off their lake fish American Honors From College News Reports

newmarketpress@denpubs.com MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College men's tennis player Brantner Jones (Winnetka, Ill.) has been named an ITA Tennis All-American for the second straight season. The sophomore played much of the season at no. 3 singles, before taking over the #1 spot on April 7. He earned an overall record of 17-8 in ’11-’12 with a 10-match winning streak. During NCAA individual play, Jones went 1-1, advancing to the round of 16. He is also a two-time All-NESCAC selection for the Panthers.

COLCHESTER — Not two minutes after Gov. Peter Shumlin (D) cast his line in the Fifth Annual LCI Governor's Cup, the Winooski River served the governor one of the day's largest fish in the May sunshine. Just a few minutes later, Congressman Peter Welch (D) pulled another good-sized rock bass from the same spot, while close by an osprey picked a fish out of the river. Although neither the congressman nor the governor took first place in the Lake Champlain International Governor's Cup this year, they were sure to remind everyone of how important Lake Champlain and Vermont's water are to our quality of life, communities and economy. "Lake Champlain is one of Vermont's most important resources," said Shumlin while holding the esteemed LCI Governor's Cup. "The fishing in Lake Champlain is the best it's ever been," the governor proclaimed. Nearly a dozen teams vied for the Governor's Cup this year, and almost every team weighed in at least one fish. In the end, though, the 2010 LCI Governor's Cup champions,

Team Lanzetta of Colchester caught the most weight of fish for 2012, and brought home the Cup once again with an impressive 26 fish. The convenience store group Jolley graciously donated lunch and coffee for the Lake Champlain supporters while Hog Island Bait & Tackle donated dozens of their famous night crawlers to help ensure that fish were reeled in.
