BRANDON Ñ Peter and Tonya Bonvouloir wanted to start their own business and knew that Brandon would be the perfect setting. The two purchased ShapiroÕ s, downtown BrandonÕ s landmark department store, in August 2013 and have been renovating the store to make it their own. Despite a store full of retail goods, something was still missing, according to Tonya. They decided to make and sell her delicious salsa, a mediumheat recipe that was given to her by a close friend years ago and only uses fresh produce. After they began the process to make salsa, Peter thought it would be a great addition to make fudge as well. With help from their two youngest children, the pair is creating batches of the products. The Bonvouloirs are excited to begin making fudges in flavors ranging from maple walnutÑ made with pure Vermont syrupÑ to Almond Joy and much more. They are also pairing with other local products, including Fat Toad Farm goats milk caramel, Ledge Haven Farm maple syrup, Gringo JackÕ s Chips, produce from Queen Bee Farm, and local apples for some great fall recipes. Fudge and salsa can be purchased at ShapiroÕ s, located at 12 Park St. in Brandon.

In her role as Charlotte’s animal control officer, she is called on to find lost dogs in the hope of re-uniting them with their families and to investigate if a canine bit a person. Undaunted, Griswold, 26, came to the job about seven months ago after a former Charlotte animal control officer recommended her for the post. She submitted her resume and spoke with Town Administrator Dean Bloch and the town Select Board. She served on an interim basis for a few months, then sweeping into office in March. Griswold, who manages a small, private dog kennel in Charlotte, earns $25 per call. She anticipates earning a salary shortly, she said, adding she estimates that the town has about 2,000 registered dogs on file, and easily has another couple of hundred unregistered dogs locally. While on the job, Griswold uses her own vehicle and her personal medical supplies, if needed. She said her most common calls are about dogs, but she does field concerns from residents about wildlife. Griswold noted some of the calls that remain with her the longest are the ones about lost dogs. She is happy when she can reunite lost pets with their owners. Signs of the times
I
received a speeding ticket along U.S. Route 7 in the Town of Pittsford. A Vermont State Police trooper in a cruiser flagged me down with flashing lights ablaze that made it look like I was an escaped prisoner. The young trooperÑ a nice chap, actuallyÑ issued me the ticket during the midst of a tropical storm-like downpour. Yes, I admitted that I had been going 50 mph in what I believed was still a 50 mph zone (it was not, I quickly learnedÑ it was 40), and the trooper corrected meÑ just as sheets of rain poured into my driver sideÕ s open window. I had not slowed down from where the signed transition indicated to slow down from 50 mph to 40 mph was posted. Later, I went back to find the supposed locale of the transition speed sign. I never did locate it. Perhaps vandals removed the sign the day after my speeding ticket? No matter, I paid the ticket and marked it down to my own fault for being inattentive and bowing down to authority’s view of things without a fight. Needless to say, I felt irritated by the fact that even in the middle of the torrential June downpour, I honestly didnÕ t see a transition speed sign. It cost me dearly. Of course, the fault is always with the driverÑ that being little olÕ moiÑ in not having observed the signs, but there’s certainly some validity to fact that Vermont’s official posted highway speed limits, and related warning signs, have become the new billboards. Because there are so many official road signs, they can become a roadside blur. I wonder if many drivers unconsciously tune them out? I understand Ò mindfulnessÓ while driving saves lives, but we shouldn’t dump all the blame on the driver’s seat-belted lap. Over zealous highway officials and their love of erecting speed-limit signsÑ everywhereÑ keep drivers on their toes in Vermont. A friend and I recently noticed this nuttiness carried to an extreme along Route 30 through Rutland and Addison counties. The effect of all the official signs along Route 30 is to reinforce that there are far too many changes in speed; I wonder if itÕ s all some sort of elaborate joke perpetuated by a Montpelier highway official? In our recent drive along Route 30, traveling north after exiting Route 4 in Castleton to the approach to Middlebury, my friend and I noted that there are so many darned roadside signs that this driver was developing eye strain tracking them. And when do official roadside signs transition from being useful to being distractions to drivers? Excluding deer crossing, firehouse ahead, children x-ing, blind person x-ing, and other such warning signs, Vermont highways like Route 30 have so many posted changes in speeds that I wonder if many drivers end up simply ignoring them all in an honest attempt to find some reasonable mph to average? HereÕ s my run down of Route 30Õ s mph signage along an approximately 40-mile-long section. Using a pen and and a paper napkin, my passenger friend (along for the ride to prove a point), jotted down the mph sign changes; it made both of our heads spin. If you like doing the math for yourself, you can figure out what a driver’s average speed will be if he/she follows the Route 30 speed limit signs religiouslyÑ but in the process you will burn considerably more fuel since you’ll be unable to find a respectable mph average. Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines: Here are all the speed limit sign changes starting on Route 30 north, just after exiting Route 4, in CastletonÑ and ending in Middlebury: 50 mph, 40 mph, 35 mph, 40 mph, 50 mph, 40 mph, 50 mph, 40 mph, 50 mph, 40 mph, 35 mph, 40 mph, 50 mph, 40 mph, 50 mph, 40 mph, 35 mph, andÑ last but not leastÑ 25 mph. With all that accelerator play, Vermont drivers, at least those using Route 30, are getting the worst mpg possible. This one example makes it look like Vermont has gone road sign crazy in an attempt to regulate the speed of traffic through towns and countryside. And it’s not just Route 30. Everywhere you look, speed limit signs have sprung up like summerÕ s wild blooms of Queen AnneÕ s Lace along the roadside. I am not sure what any of this means really, but playing my carÕ s accelerator pedal like Ringo Starr plays a Ludwig drum pedal isn’t helping my fuel efficiency or Vermont’s environment. am honored to be serving in Montpelier as an Addison-3 legislator representing Addison, Ferrisburgh, Panton, Vergennes, and Waltham. Over the past six years IÕ ve worked hard on a variety of issues that affect our region: • Stronger Vermont: In 2013 I introduced a bill to bring regulation to Precious Metal dealers. This bill was in direct response to the home and business break-in crisis in our communities. This bill passed (S.308) after several rewrites and a committee study. I am very proud of this action and its ability to strengthen law enforcement. • Personal Growth: The Speaker of the House appointed me to be a board member of the State Infrastructure Bank (SIB) and also appointed me this year to the Vermont Child Poverty Council and to serve as a Transportation delegate to the Council of State Government/Eastern Regional States. Served on the Transportation Funding Study Committee. I am truly pleased and humbled by these opportunities to learn and serve our state. • Economic Development: Working with our Addison Senator Ayer and others, we achieved support for the development of a master plan that involves the 330 acres of property within Vergennes and Ferrisburgh, which the state owns. Our rail road station is now an Amtrak supported stop with passenger service on plan for the near future. There are many opportunities to advance our economy and I continue to work on promoting the economic strengths of our county. • Champlain Bridge: Opened Nov. 7, 2011 to great joy and relief. Thousands of commuters, business owners and first responders are now able to cross without delay. As Vice Chair of the Public Advisory Committee (PAC) and a member of House Transportation Committee, was one of the first public servants to focus on the crisis brought about by the bridge closure. This achievement is by far the most important accomplishment for our area and I smile every time I cross the bridge. • Education and Awards: 2012 Graduate of UVM Snelling Center for Government, Vermont Leadership Institute; 2011 Champion Award for Legislator Leadership on Substance Abuse issues; 2010 Champion Award for Youth Drug & Alcohol Prevention. The beliefs I bring to Montpelier are as important as my accomplishments. I believe government can have a positive role in peopleÕ s lives and I work to make government accountable to the people. I believe one person can make a difference and I have the patience and commitment to persevere. I believe it is my duty to contribute and I offer the kind of leadership that represents the diverse community we all live in. With your support I will continue to work on the tough issues facing Vermont and to advocate for our communities. I appreciate your support in the coming election. As I walk the district door to door this summer and fall I look forward to communicating further with my community. If you wish to contact me direct, I can be reached at (802) 877-2230 or dlanpher@leg.state.vt.us..

Ecole Champlain: A touch of class on Lake Champlain Summer girls camp, 1924-1974 By Lou Varricchio
lou@addison-eagle.com FERRISBURGH Ñ Before there was Kingsland Bay State Park there was Ecole Champlain. The secluded 264-acre park along Lake Champlain occupies the site of what was one of the nationÕ s most exclusive girls summer camp, a camp which in its pi me rivaled the nearby Basin Harbor Resort in amenities. Ecole Champlain, where blue-blooded American and Canadian girls learned to speak French while paddling canoes and preening on the tennis courts, stood on the modern state park site from 1924 until 1974. Except for a few camp structures still standing, all that remain of Ecole Champlain are memories. But even before Ecole Champlain there was human activity along Kingsland Bay. TodayÕ s state park is an historic site which dates to the 1790s. The grand and towered Hawley House mansion, which welcomes visitors at the parkÕ s entrance, served as an inn for travelers crossing a ferry that used to link the bay with Grog Harbor, N.Y., starting in the 1790s. During part of the War of 1812, the local militia used the house as an armory. Still later, Catholic monks converted the Hawley mansion into a monastery. The monks added an ornate bell tower to the building under which they chanted vespers by the fading light of the setting Sun across Lake Champlain for several years. By 1924, Kingsland Bay had emerged from 133 years of relative quiet. The Catholic Church sold the property and in stepped Dr. Edward Collins, a French language professor at Middlebury College. Collins created Ecole Champlain as a place girls from ages 5 to 17 could build strong minds and bodies. Later, after Collins died, his daughter Ruth Collins and husband E. Sheridan Chase ran the camp. Later still, five Chase children operated the camp. The upscale summer camp was last operated by Alyce Ò BabeÓ Schaetze until its final summer season, 1973. In 1974, the property was sold to

A 2014 view of Hawley House. The mansion was built in 1790 with its bell tower added by Catholic monks in the early 1900s. It served as the administration building and infirmary at Ecole Champlain between 1924 and 1974. Frank and Ginny Brown of Woodstock. A seasonal summer stock theater and restaurant was operated out of Hawley House for a few years, but then the original 350 acres was broken up with the lion share being purchased by the State of Vermont and the remainder going to private parties. Carl and Janet Cole of Ferrisburgh, who still live in the vicinity of Kingsland Bay, have fond memories of their association with Ecole Champlain. Ò My parents learned about the camp from friends,Ó said Janet, who attended the summer camp during the 1948-49 seasons. Ò It was a beautiful place for young girls to learn many things. We were housed in either cabins and tents and there were many counselors and tutors available for instruction and guidance. Even in those days, tuition costs were for the elite. For example, during the summer of 1965, tuition was $1,800.Ó Janet Cole treasures her deep connection with Ecole Champlain; she was both an alumna and a paid Latin tutor at the camp. JanetÕ s husband Carl, owner of Carl Cole Realty in Vergennes, met Janet at the camp during the 1960s when he was employed as a camp staff member. The Coles recall that the camp maintained strict discipline (later slightly relaxed) and included Sunday services for Catholics and non Catholics at the camp. Ò The Catholic girls were bussed to St. PeterÕ s in Vergennes every Sunday morning although nondenominational services were held at the camp on Sundays,Ó Janet recalled. A day at Camp Ecole was long and vigorous. Girls reported to reveille at 7 a.m. and started breakfast by 7:45.. Daily cleaning and inspections were held and girls were expected to report to their assigned, 45-minute classes which include French language instruction, additional language and arts classes, and instruction in everything from horseback riding (European style) and sailing to canoeing and tennisÑ and more. A giant stable, now part of the property of Camp Greylock on the bay, housed up to 85 horses for camp use. Even today, horseback riding is a popular past time around Kingsland Bay. Ò Economics were the primary reasons for the closing of the camp,Ó according to Carl, Ò AlyceÕ s divorce caused friction and a split in the camp shareholders and that really precipitated things. ThatÕ s when attendance dropped 40 percent. There were approximately 80 or 90 counselors with 300 girls; the ratio was pretty high. It came at a time when teenage girls were rebelling and just not going to summer camp. The BrownÕ s business sold off the land to the state which included the waterfront portion. The campÕ s farmhouse and stable were the last to go.Ó
Author Cynthia Newberry Martin, pictured here in 1972, was a camp counselor at Ecole Champlain. Through the years, Ecole Champlain had its share of celebrity family girls in attendance. Among them were Roosevelt girls andÑ •Carolyn Lee Bouvier Radziwill, sister of First Lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis attended the camp. The sisters mentioned the camp in a rare book they coauthored in 1951, titled Ò One Special SummerÓ . •Suzy Watson, daughter of champion professional golfer Tom Watson attended. her arrival at camp by seaplane is still fondly recalled by camp alumni. •Carol Maytag, the daughter of washing machine mogul Robert E. Maytag, •Cynthia Newberry Martin, author of the celebrated novel Ò The Painting StoryÓ attended and worked as a camp counselor. She was enchanted by her time in Vermont and returned to attend Vermont College of Fine Arts where she embarked on her literary career. While Ecole Champlain is gone, itÕ s era of outdoor elegance lives on in what is preserved at Kingsland Bay State Park today. Picnicking, swimming, and facilities are available. There are several fine buildings available for large group gatherings including family reunions, weddings, and company picnics. There are also scenic trails along the shoreline of Lake Champlain with access to swimming. Boating, fishing, and sailing are also popular at the state park. For those planning graduations, weddings, or family reunions, the Kingsland Bay Dining Hall, Theater Building and Hawley House are available for rent to group functions of all kinds. Call 802-877-3445 for rates and other details. Check it out: To visit Kingsland Bay State Park, the site of the former Ecole Champlain: From Ferrisburgh follow Route 7 to Little Chicago Road. Proceed north onto Hawkins Road, 3 miles, then turn right onto Kingsland Bay State Park Road to the park entrance. Watch for bicyclist and horseback riders near the park. The park is open for day use only: 10 a.m.-official sunset.

We respect the right individuals have to express their point of view. Unfortunately, this organization has proven on more than one occasion that it cannot be trusted to express their point of view peacefully or honestly. As a result of their extreme behavior, and our concern that they may be violent or vandalize property in the future, we have had to establish specific security protocols to protect people and property and we will continue to follow these protocols. If they elect to trespassÑ rather than express their view from a public space at a respectful distanceÑ they will be given the opportunity to leave peacefully. If they elect to stay and obstruct progress, or threaten or disrupt customers, employees or contractors we reserve the right to request that law enforcement cite them for trespassing. Given their previous behavior, we also record their activity. There is no project in Vermont, proposed or underway, that has such real and significant benefits to Vermont’s economy and environment. In addition to being adorably cute, I am very smart and yearning to learn. Things I love are training, playing, hiking, sleeping by your side and riding in the car and of course snuggling. I would do best in a home with someone who is familiar with my breed.

View weekly circulars online at www.addison-eagle.com/circulars
From page 1 During winter, Meiler trains at The University of Vermont, while South Burlington High SchoolÕ s track beckons in summer. Meiler also praised her coaches and her training partner, Barbara Jordan of South Burlington, for encouraging her. Ò SheÕ s a real go-getter,Ó said Meiler, referring to Jordan. Meiler noted she holds seven world records in track and field in the senior division. Her husband, Gene, is the guardian of his wifeÕ s accomplishments. He keeps track of every newspaper clipping, spelling out MeilerÕ s accomplishments in the athletic arena. Ò He helps me a lot,Ó said Meiler of her husband. Spousal devotion is a common thread that runs through the Meiler marriage. Meiler noted she was prompted to become a volunteer for the American Heart Association, citing the early, untimely death of her father-in-law due to heart disease. Whatever she tackles, Meiler credits her positive attitude for her success on the track field. “You need a lot of perseverance. IÕ ve had to train daily.Ó Away from the track, Meiler is a member of the St. CatherineÕ s Roman Catholic Parish Choir. She has been singing with the group for 27 years and is fulsome in her praise for the singers and the churchÕ s spiritual guide, Msgr. Michael Deforge.Ó I just love his sermons,Ó she said.

Special to the Eagle RUTLAND — The Northern Modified Challenge Series returned to action July 26 to add a new page in the scrapbook. The second-year open-wheel stock car series will make its first-ever trip to Airborne Park Speedway for a pair of 25-lap shootouts, pitting the stars of the trackÕ s weekly J&S Steel Sportsman Modified division against a group of Challenge Series invaders. Inaugural NMCS champion Vince Quenneville, Jr., was among the drivers excited to head to Airborne. The Brandon veteran finished fifth in a recent weekly event at the 4/10-mile, progressively banked oval, and has momentum on his side after a victory at his home track at DevilÕ s Bowl Speedway earlier this month. Ò I love racing up at Airborne, and IÕ m looking forward to this weekend,Ó the driver of the No. 78 Black Diamond Builders/ Green Mountain Feeds entry said. Ò The hometown guys like Nick Heywood, Travis Bruno, and a few others will be tough, but I’m hoping to steal a couple of top-five finishes and hopefully a win in those twin 25s.Ó Quenneville opened the Northern Modified Challenge Series season with a third-place effort at Thunder Road in Barre on Memorial Day weekend. He trailed Jessey Mueller and Jason Durgan at the finish, and those two drivers have since combined to

Others who joined them on last Saturday were Leon Gonyo, Ron Proctor, Johnny Scarborough, Jamie LaFountain, Codie Aubin, and top rookie Jayson Criss. Sanctioned by DevilÕ s Bowl Speedway management, the Northern Modified Challenge Series had a six-event schedule
that allowed Sportsman-style crate engine Modifieds to compete alongside restricted 358-cubic-inch “open motor” Modifieds. Drivers and conventional-suspension cars from both divisions were eligible to compete on Saturday night and earned championship points in both the Northern Modified Challenge Series and Airborne Park SpeedwayÕ s weekly NASCAR Whelen AllAmerican Series Sportsman Modified division.

Injuries result in Bridport crash BRIDPORT Ñ On July 28, at approximately 9:03 p.m., the Vermont State Police responded to a two car motor vehicle crash on Route 22A in Bridport. State Police learned that vehicle 1, driven by Matthew Safford, 18, of Argyle, N.Y., was traveling southbound. Safford crossed the double yellow line and collided with vehicle 2 driven by David Barker, 55, of Burlington. The crash caused extensive damage to both vehicles. Barker and his two occupants were able to walk away from the crash, however, they were taken to Porter Hospital in Middlebury for precautionary reasons. SaffordÕ s car was so badly damaged that he had to be extricated from his vehicle by Shoreham and Bridport Fire Departments. Safford was taken to Porter Hospital with serious injuries. It was later learned that Safford suffered several broken bones, however, it was unclear if he would be released from the hospital that night. At this time there is no indication that alcohol played a factor in the crash.
