SHOREHAM — On Dec. 17, at approximately 12:30 a.m.,Vermont State Police troopers were advised about a family fight which took place at an apartment building on Route 22A in Shoreham. Police said that Jason A. Gagnon, 27, of Bomoseen, attempted to force entry into an apartment by punching and kicking the door in an attempt to come into contact with two females inside it. Gagnon damaged the door in the process. One of the females secured a .22 caliber pistol inside the residence as she feared for her safety. Police allege Gagnon vandalized the female's vehicle by punching a side mirror. Police also allege that Gagnon got into his truck, put it into four-wheel drive, and rammed the victim’s vehicle attempting to push her vehicle into her apartment building. An arrest warrant was requested for Gagnon; he could not be located. The Vermont State Police does not release the names of victims of sexual assault or domestic violence.

Vt. biologist rescues owl in a truck By Lou Varricchio
LEARN TO SKI
newmarketpress@denpubs.com
BRISTOL — Thanks to the efforts of a quick-acting and caring Vermont wildlife biologist and a local truck driver, a mature barred owl in Addison County has been returned safely to the wild. Biologist David Sausville, of the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department, rescued an injured owl which ended up half in, and half out of, the front plastic grill of pickup truck. The owl impacted the truck while it was being driven on an Addison County road, according to the anonymous driver. Sausville received the wildlife version of a “911” telephone call from the truck driver; he was concerned that the owl, while still alive and kicking, might not be able to be extracted from the impact-damaged grill. “I received a call from the driver a little after five in the morning explaining that he had hit an owl,” said Sausville. “He said that the owl was still alive and was lodged in his truck.” Sausville got directions from the truck driver—who was at work—to make the emergency call and hopefully save a life. BRIDPORT — Most teachers would agree that learning should start early in life and it should be fun. Well, that’s the enlightened approach that teachers, staff, parents and other volunteers at the Bridport Central School are taking with its interesting selection of some pretty nifty after-school clubs for students. During the fall semester, Bridport Central School students, ranging in age from preschooler through sixth graders, get to choose what interests them. The youngsters have a wide variety of choices when it came to participating in a school club, according to Bridport’s Lauralee Cu-

Judging by similar local school club efforts, Bridport comes out on the top as being the most creative and diverse in its approach to involve the entire community. See BRIDPORT CENTRAL, page 8

Jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut swings into Middlebury Jan. 11 By Lou Varricchio
newmarketpress@denpubs.com MIDDLEBURY — This writer first heard a portion of piano music performed by jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut on National Public Radio in 2009. It resonated with me ever since. That’s why when news of Chestnut appearing again at Middlebury College Jan. 11 arrived here, I was eager to buy a ticket and get the word out. “Soulful” is an overused term in the music world, but I think its true meaning applies to Cyrus Chestnut’s piano playing. When any musician blends today’s “Watercolors” jazz with the Ellington-BasieGoodman heritage of jazz—plus Latin samba and some Southern gospel thrown in for good measure—and then pull it off marvelously, critics will take notice. “Lush chords, playful grace notes, worshipful tremolos and effortless runs up and down the 88s,” is the way NPR reviewer Marc Silver described the District of Columbia-based Chestnut. At the Middlebury College Performing Arts Series concert, Friday, Jan. 11, Chestnut will lead his Cyrus Chestnut Trio—Eric Wheeler on bass and Billy Williams on percussion. Middlebury College’s press liner notes for the upcoming concert point out that Chestnut has played with the likes of Kathleen Battle, Betty Carter, Freddy Cole, Chick Corea, Dizzy Gillespie, Isaac Hayes (of “Shaft” fame), Jon Hendricks, Freddie Hubbard, Kevin Mahogany, the Marsalis family, Brian McKnight, Bette Midler, Jimmy Scott, and last but not least, Vanessa Williams (of stage, screen, pop music, Miss America, and Penthouse magazine fame). Chestnut has also dabbled with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie Big Band, and Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra. Man, what a resume. Chestnut began his jazz career at the age of 13. He entered the famous Duke Ellington School for the Arts, located on 35th Street N.W., in D.C., where he lived, ate and slept jazz music studies. After which he began to emerge as a national treasure. All the more reason to hear his music live Jan. 11 in our community. The Cyrus Chestnut Trio will perform Jan. 11, at 8 p.m., in the intimate concert hall of Middlebury College’s Mahaney Center for the Arts. The center is located on the Middlebury College campus, at 72 Porter Field Rd. on Route 30. Free parking is available. Tickets are $25 for the general public; $20 for Middlebury College faculty, staff, alumni, emeriti, and other I.D. card holders; and $6 for Middlebury College students. For more information, call 443-MIDD (6433) or visit http://go.middlebury.edu/arts.

The fiscal cliff and Vt. retirees hile we admit that the news media’s obsession of late with reporting about the so-called fiscal cliff may be beating an already dead mule, there are some things to watch out for as we approach the fiscal day of decision Dec. 31. A perfect storm of expiring tax and spending cuts is having everyone from retirees to millionaires scratching their heads with an uncertainty about the future that even the Mayan calendar can’t predict. What does Washington’s seeming inability to agree on anything mean for us? And what do changes to Medicare and Social Security mean to a growing segment of the population—seniors, especially those getting by here in high-cost Vermont. We asked Greg Marchildon, state director for AARP in Vermont, to give us some perspective, at least from the over-55 organization. “In Vermont, 91,000 seniors currently receive Social Security with an average annual benefit of $14,000,” Marchildon said. “Social Security makes up about 59 percent of the typical older Vermonter ’s income, lifting 38 percent of older Vermonters out poverty. In addition, it pumps $1.7 billion into the state economy. Changing the way cost of living adjustments—COLA—are calculated for Social Security beneficiaries by moving to a chained consumer price index, as is on the table in debt deal discussions, cuts benefits, taking roughly $270 million out of the pockets of Vermont Social Security beneficiaries over the next 10 years and $112 billion for beneficiaries nationwide.” Marchildon also said that Social Security COLA understates what an average, older Vermonter spends and purchases each month. “Assuming that most people receiving Social Security, who are already just getting by, will simply ‘trade down’ in their spending on prescription drugs, utilities and other fixed expenses for lower cost options is out of touch with reality,” he said. “Americans have worked too hard to earn their benefits to end up getting pushed over the edge in a fiscal cliff deal. Social Security is not a cause of the budget deficit and it shouldn’t be used to solve it.” That’s why the move Congress would like to make—raising the eligibility age from 65 to 67—would leave 13,157 Vermonters without health coverage. And then what happens to these Vermonters? If Congress gets its way, these 13,157 seniors will be pushed into the private insurance marketplace creating an additional $2,200 for them to each year. And, Marchildon said, that by removing the youngest and healthiest older Americans from the Medicare risk pool, it will increase premiums for those left in the program. “Raising the Medicare eligibility age would dramatically increase costs for recently retired and soon-to-retire seniors, drive up premiums for those enrolled in Medicare and increase overall health care costs,” he said. “Seniors deserve guaranteed coverage, not higher costs.” We agree with AARP—Vermonters over the age of 55 have worked too hard to earn their benefits to end up getting pushed over the edge in some sleazy, behind-closed-doors fiscal cliff deal between the parties. Let’s not create more problems by forcing Vermonters nearing retirement age to work longer—while paying more to keep our heads above water. Working Vermonters over 55 didn’t get us in this mess. So, let the politicians look to other social entitlements to slash if they must. Lou Varricchio

Owl rescue from page 1 When the state biologist arrived at the driver ’s workplace, he faced a painful scene—there was an adult barred owl embedded partially within the grill of the pickup truck. Sausville said the driver couldn’t avoid hitting the owl which swooped, from a higher elevation along the roadside, to the level of the front grill. It must have been pursuing prey when the freak accident occurred, he said. The driver stopped and jumped from the cab to find the excited owl—head lodged inside grill—flapping its wings and displaying talons. Looking at the nasty talons, the driver was quick enough to think of calling the state wildlife office after having covered eight miles to his place of employment to telephone Sausville.
“The driver did the right thing by not attempting to help the owl by himself,” said Sausville. “Owls can do serious damage with their talons if they get a hold of you; they don’t want to let go.” Sausville used heavy, leather welder ’s gloves to gently extract the owl from its precarious position, half inside and half outside the grill. The job required getting a hold of the bird’s splayed and ready-to-strike talons; the driver opened the hood of the vehicle and helped with removing the bird’s head from within the broken grille. With the bird safely removed, Sausville used a standard dog carrier as a place to rest the bird. While keeping an eye on the bird, Sausville saw that the prognosis was looking better and better. Several hours later, Sausville released the owl, completely recovered from the ordeal; it flew to freedom—a happy ending, all in a day’s work for a Vermont wildlife biologist.
Bridport Central from page 1 But if it weren’t for community participants, including parents—and a few taxpayer-funded helpers—a lot of the learning stimulated by these after-school clubs wouldn’t happen. “Some hosts volunteer their time while others choose to be paid through a federal health grant called the Early Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment Grant which is written by our school nurse,” according to Curavoo. Bridport Central’s Principal Kathleen Kilbourne is proud of what her school, and the greater community, have accomplished through
the clubs. “These after school clubs provide an opportunity for our children to explore interests that have a real life connection to the learning we do at school daily. They are able to see new learning from another adult’s lens; to share the joys, passions and talents of the volunteers, and become more well rounded as they experience new areas that may very well develop into lifelong hobbies or talents,” said Kilbourne. Another key to the rural Addison County school’s club program success, Kilbourne added, is to ensure equal access for all students. That’s why every afterschool club is free and transportation home is provided
by the school. Curavoo said that Bridport’s school clubs are open to students usually one afternoon a week. The club activity lasts one hour with ideas for projects generated by adult volunteers with various interests and hobbies. “There will be two more rounds of clubs this school year—five weeks between January and February, and a longer 10 week session from March through May,” Curavoo added. If you would like to share a hobby or interest with Bridport children, contact the school at 758-2331 to learn how you can get involved with the after-school club program.
