ew things are anticipated more in spring than the arrival of new leaves on the trees and budding flowers in the garden. A landscape awash with fresh colors can brighten the spirit and make anyone want to head outdoors.

There are many different plants that begin to show their colors in the spring. A number of perennials, annuals and trees begin to flower or show new sprouts come the springtime. Here are some plants that can be planted for springtime enjoyment.

Annuals Looking for first signs of color? Look no further than these wonderful annuals. * Alyssum: Starting in April, this cascading bounty of tiny flowers offers a sweet aroma that attracts butterflies. * Dianthus: These vivid flowers also attract butterflies and are often a cottage garden staple. * Gypsophila: Also known as baby's breath, these delicate flowers can serve as filler in any landscape. Pink and white varieties are available. * Impatiens: One of the best-known plants for the garden, these annuals come in scores of colors and can generally tolerate full sun to full shade. * Larkspur: Belonging to the buttercup family, these flowers bloom in shades of white to violet. * Pansy: These flowers are some of the earliest spring bloomers, arriving alongside spring bulbs like tulips. * Petunias: Petunias put on a show of color through the entire season, making them a popular bedding flower.

PREVENTING LAWN DAMAGE M

Grubs Grubs are not very lawnfriendly. Grubs are actually the larval stage of different types of large beetles. These worm-like creatures feed on the roots of grass and are able to kill large sections of the lawn in a relatively short amount of time. It can sometimes be difficult to discern whether grubs, drought or anoth-

er other pest has damaged a lawn. One way to check is to grab a portion of the damaged lawn and attempt to peel it back. If it comes back easily like a piece of carpet, it's likely grubs. Spotting grubs underneath is a sure sign these larvae are killing the lawn.

Using an insecticide for grub control in July can help kill off grubs that start hatching in August through September. Grub eggs do well in sunny patches of lawn that are well watered. More shade may deter them. There's also the option of letting the lawn go dormant and not watering it, but you will be left with a brown, unappealing lawn.

Pet Urine Pets can also damage a lawn.

Pet urine can create burnt patches and significant discoloration on the lawn, particularly if the dog or cat uses one area consistently as their potty zone.

Moles and voles are among the more common lawn damage culprits. Voles are small rodents that resemble mice but have stouter bodies, shorter tails and rounder heads. They feast on everything from bulbs, succulent roots, ground cover, and even dead animals in their paths. Decorate Your Screened-In Porch

A

screened-in porch or a threeseason room can be a welcome space that adds viable living area to a house. Oftentimes, these rooms serve as a bridge between the indoors and outside, and they can offer the creature comforts of any other room in the home. Just as they would a bedroom or family room, many homeowners prefer to decorate this area so it doesn't look like an extension of the backyard, instead showcasing the homeowner's personal style.

Homeowners can add many accents to a screened-in porch. Keep in mind that because this three-season room will likely need to endure the weather, including moisture and sunlight, decorating should be planned accordingly.

Turn a screened-in porch into a welcoming space with a few different ideas.

Here are some things to consider. * Think about adding sheer curtains to create privacy and keep sun out on hot days. It is important to choose fabrics that are fade-resistant but also resistant to mold and mildew. Muslin or even mosquito netting in different shades can be

draped to add some visual interest. * Look for outdoor furniture that is both comfortable and attractive. Wicker, wood and wrought-iron are popular materials for outdoor designs. utdoor living spaces have become increasingly popular over the last several years. The home improvement boom has shown many homeowners just how easy it can be to transform a home into a private sanctuary that caters to the personalities of the home's residents.

Outdoor living areas have become an extension of the home's interior, with many homeowners creating outdoor living rooms and dining areas so they can relax and eat meals outside just as they do indoors.

But homeowners thinking of creating outdoor living spaces should consider a few tricks of the trade before beginning their projects. * Strategically place the space. Property often dictates where the outdoor living space will go, but it helps to keep in mind that the outdoor space is more likely to be used if it's easily accessible from the inside of the home. For

instance, if residents need to walk out the front door to access an outdoor living space in the backyard, then residents might find the area is too inconveniently located and they won't make the most of the space. Whenever possible, plan the outdoor living space so it's easily accessible from the home's interior, preferably from the kitchen so it will be easier to carry meals outdoors when dining outside. * Emphasize comfort. Many homeowners look at their outdoor living areas as places to kick their feet up and relax, so comfort should take precedence when planning the space. However, homeowners who have one eye on R&R and the other on resale value should keep the design of their outdoor living space consistent with their home. * Don't forget the fire pit. A fire pit provides a great focal point for an outdoor living area. How to care for Hardwood Floors O

ver the years, home interior trends have continued to change. What's popular one year might seem dated the next. Hardwood floors, however, are one popular trend that has managed to maintain its popularity.

Renters and homeowners alike are head over heels for hardwood floors, enjoying their aesthetic appeal and their tendency to never go out of style, particularly when compared to other flooring alternatives.

Hardwood floors can also be much easier to maintain.

Whereas carpets are susceptible to hard-to-remove stains and dirt that might never go away, hardwood floors can be very easy to clean, maintaining their "good as new" look for years if homeowners take simple steps to keep them clean. * Be diligent on a daily basis. Hardwood floors are typically easier to maintain than carpet, but that doesn't mean homeowners should be lax with regards to hardwood floors. Some daily maintenance can significantly increase the floor's life expectancy. Should any spills occur, clean up after them immediately to avoid warping. In addition, address any scuff marks at night after dinner. When it rains or snows outside, make sure no one wears their shoes around the home inside. Place a mat near the entryway and instruct all family members and guests to remove their shoes before walking on the floor. This will greatly reduce the likelihood of water damage. * Sweep or mop on a regular basis. A dry microfiber mop will keep the floor clean and looking good while ensuring there is no water

damage. It might not be necessary to mop every day, but homeowners who want to extend their floor's life can use a broom or vacuum to keep their floor dirt-free. * Periodically give the floor a thorough cleaning. It isn't necessary to give the floor a thorough cleaning every night before going to bed.

However, every so often thoroughly clean the floor beyond dry mopping or vacuuming. Check with the manufacturer before doing anything, as the type of floor will dictate which is the best approach. Some manufacturers suggest certain polishes or cleaning solutions, while others advise against such options.

If there are no manufacturer instructions or if you're a tenant and the landlord doesn't have the manufacturer's instructions, a damp cloth is almost always a viable way to clean a hardwood floor.

Dampen a cloth and scrub the floor but be sure to avoid soaking the cloth. A soaked cloth will likely cause water damage, while a damp cloth will pick up dirt and debris without harming the floor.

Once finished, go over the floor with a dry rag to reduce the risk of water damage.

When purchasing a care kit for wood floors, be careful to read the ingredients first.

Some kits contain ingredients that can be very harmful to floors. Renters or homeowners unsure of certain ingredients should consult a wood floor specialist before applying any solutions to their floors.

To get started on your yard this spring, consider the following tips. * Don't begin too early. The early bird might get the worm, but the early homeowner might get a damaged lawn. If temperatures for an upcoming free weekend are unseasonably warm, it's best to avoid doing spring yard cleanup until there have been several warm weekends to thaw the ground.

Unless the ground has completely thawed, footsteps on the yard will damage the grass, compacting the soil and preventing the air and moisture that soil needs from doing its job and penetrating the soil. What's more, if the yard is raked before the ground has thawed, the rake might just be pulling the grass out by its roots. * Survey the property. A close survey of the property will give homeowners an idea of just how big or small their restoration project will be. Unless it's entirely necessary, avoid removing any nests, and be sure to carefully inspect the yard before the season's first mow. * Out with the old. When the cleanup process is ready to begin, it's time to remove remnants from last season. This includes removing any dead plants as well as last year's mulch.

If new mulch is simply thrown on top of old, plants could suffocate.

Dead leaves also tend to gather during the winter, often up against fences or a home's exterior walls. Rake up these dead leaves and add them to the season's compost. * Get rid of thatch. Thatch can be soil's worst enemy, preventing its access to the sunlight, air and moisture it needs to make the lawn look beautiful and healthy. Thatch removal can be tiresome, but visit the local hardware store and pick up a dethatching rake to make the job a little easier. Thatch removal isn't always necessary every spring. Many homeowners have found removing thatch every other year is effective enough. * Aerate the yard to revive the soil. Soil often becomes compacted as spring becomes summer and summer becomes fall.

This is especially true of yards that are heavily used, be it by kids playing outdoors or families who love to host warm weather gatherings in the yard. Aerating in the spring removes plugs of sod from the soil, loosening it up and making it easier for air and water to reach the roots. * Address those ugly bald spots. Bare spots in a yard can result from any number of things, be it a dog urinating in the yard or even disease. Early spring, when temperatures are a little cooler and promote grass growth, is a great time to address the yard's bald spots. Do so by clearing away the spots and sprinkling the freshly exposed soil with some grass seed. Then add some fertilizer and be sure the newly seeded areas get some water until the new, healthy grass begins to grow in.

Take some inventory

Don't forget the kitchen

Many people have no problem buying new clothes, but they do find it hard to get rid of older items. Part of spring cleaning is tossing old items you no longer use, and that includes clothing. Clothing can take up a significant amount of space, so take some inventory on your wardrobe and decide which items you want to keep and which ones you can afford to discard or even donate.

The kitchen is not immune to clutter, and it's especially easy for items to overstay their welcome in the refrigerator and the kitchen cabinets. Look for old takeout containers in the refrigerator that have managed to stick around, and throw these out as well as any items that have passed their expiration dates. While items in the kitchen cabinets might not have an expiration date, it helps to remove them from the pantry and then dust and wipe down the shelves. When doing so, discard any items that no longer seem appetizing.

Address the windows If the last several months have been especially cold or snowy, then you might not have looked out the windows in quite some time. Unfortunately, those windows might have accumulated quite the amount of dirt and grime while you were huddled inside. When washing the windows, do so on a cloudy day, as the sun can actually cause streaking. In addition, be mindful of what you're using to wipe down the windows post-cleaning.

Microfiber rags typically give windows a great shine without any streaking.

The blinds and drapes will also need to be addressed, as they have likely accumulated some dust over the last few months.

Dust the valance and the frame, and wipe the blinds down with a damp cloth. You can also use your vacuum's upholstery and brush attachments to further clean blinds and drapes.

Tidy up the bed You likely wash your bed linens regardless of the season.

When spring cleaning, toss these linens into the washing machine and don't forget to wash the mattress pads and bed skirting as well. While those items are in the wash, flip all the mattresses in your household.

Beat the rugs Area rugs have no doubt collected dirt and dust over the last several months. Though vacuuming these area rugs might be enough during the year, take advantage of the pleasant weather and take the rugs outside to beat them and rid them of dust and any other particles the vacuum might have missed over the last few months.

Empty and clean the bookshelves Bookshelves are one the biggest collectors of dust in many homes. Open the windows in the home and then remove books from the shelves. Once the books have been removed, dust the shelves and wipe them down with a damp cloth. And don't forget to dust the books and reorganize titles before returning them to their newly cleaned shelves.

Backyard Luxury without the Price "Affordable" and "luxury" never used to be words you'd see cozied up together -- luxury, after all, implies a lifestyle the average person can't afford!

But much has changed with our changing economy. The oncecontradictory notion of low-cost luxury is fast becoming the new operating philosophy of the savvy homeowner: How can I capture the most extravagance for the least money?

Well, for starters, consider a well-made hammock.

A quality hammock is one of the most economical face-lifts you can give your back yard, confirms Walter R. Perkins III, CEO of The Hammock Source, home to such trendsetting brands as The Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock and Hatteras Hammocks.

"With a good hammock, you look and feel lavish without having to spend lavishly," Perkins explains.

Paired with an attractive powder-coated steel stand or a luxuriously curved cypress-wood stand, a quality rope or fabric hammock quickly becomes the sumptuous centerpiece of any deck, patio or poolside, or a lovely, functional addition to a large flower garden.

The hammock wasn't always so connected with luxury, however. Far from it.

Prior to the late 19th century, hammocks functioned primarily as sailors' beds, and were neither particularly comfortable nor all that safe. Fabric hammocks back then were cramped, hot and prone to tipping, while rope hammocks, equally unsturdy, were woven typically of rough hemp or manila, and riddled with bulky knots.

Then along came Pawleys Island, S.C., riverboat captain Joshua Ward, whose quest for a better night's sleep led him in 1889 to reinvent the rope hammock and, in the process, set the standard for what's now the classic American hammock style.

Ward switched to heavy cotton rope and a knotless, latticelike weave, placing wooden spreader bars at both ends to hold his hammock open -- and what was once a clingy, scratchy, knotty sleeping-cocoon became a soft, open, airborne leisure space.

PROTECT YOUR GARDEN FROM HUNGRY ANIMALS

H

omes full of garden beds with blooming flowers and foliage can seem warm and inviting.

Planting flowers is one of the easiest ways to transform the appearance of a home with minimal effort and expense.

Too often homeowners plant annuals and perennials only to find their hard work has been damaged by hungry animals, like deer, rabbits and underground pests.

There are ways to keep animals away from plants -- many of which are humane and environmentally safe.

Keeping furry marauders away from the garden is something individuals who live in rural or suburban areas have to consider when planting. Many communities are growing and encroaching on the natural habitats of wild animals. With some of their natural food sources diminishing, animals may decide to partake of the easy pickings that come from residential home gardens.

If you understand how these animals feed, you can take precautions to restrict access to planting beds. Rabbits tend to munch on vegetables and ornamental plants. Small in stature and not able to scale fences very easily, rabbits might be deterred by a low fence surrounding plants. Consider digging some chicken

wire below the fence a few inches to discourage digging under the fence. The fence should be 18 inches high, and you should keep the openings no more than one inch because rabbits can squeeze through small openings.

In terms of gophers, moles, voles, and other burrowing animals, the key is preventing underground access. Chicken wire or another abrasive material put under the garden soil can help keep underground animals from burrowing under and then up into the heart of the garden.

Deer are another story altogether. They are tall animals capable of rising up on hind legs to stretch out and reach branches of trees and bushes. Therefore, taller fences may be needed to protect the garden. But these can sometimes be unsightly, especially in a front yard.

Therefore, look for natural barriers that can keep them out. They may be deterred by thorny bushes or plants. Daisies, papaver (poppies), narcissus, rudbeckia, achillea, agastache, aster, lupine, coreopsis, verbascum, centaurea, and echinacea are available in many varieties and are not attractive to deer or rabbits.

Here are some additional strategies that you can try.

* Create narrow pathways between raised beds. Rabbits will feel like they are in prime locations for predators to get at them in this type of situation and may be less likely to venture in. Deer may not be able to navigate narrow paths. * Use mulch. In addition to benefitting the plants, keeping soil moist and fertilizing the areas, mulch also deters many animals. * Interplant different species of plants.

Some animals don't want to bother picking tasty plants out among other varieties they don't like. So mix plants with ones that animals find unpleasant. * Use other natural deterrents. Animals may be kept away by scents of their predators. Urine from coyote, foxes, dogs, and cats may help. You can also try human hair, cat litter and soap flakes. * Create an animal-friendly area elsewhere. Feed the deer and rabbits the foods they love somewhere away from your garden. They may fill up with favorites and stay away from your flowers and vegetables. * Traps may work. As a last resort, use humane traps to collect animals and release them elsewhere.

Create a designer look ...

On a budget! paint swatches, find magazine pictures that fit with your goal and arrange them on a piece of poster board. See how the items work together. If you are unsure of colors, see which shades were used in the inspiring picture and determine if it will coordinate with your home.

When designing, identify or create a focal point in the room and build off of that. This may be a large window, fireplace, or even the entertainment center if it's a family room. Place furniture around the focal point and then move outward.

It's also important to keep scale in mind.
