Public officials: Bail reform laws may pose a threat to public safety
LG Winter Carnival 2020 features a bonus ‘Mardi Gras’ weekend
By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
Outhouse races offer $2,000 in prize money By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
LAKE GEORGE | Astronomical and perhaps meteorological factors, rare in the last quarter-century or so, are prompting the introduction of new aspects of Lake George Winter Carnival this year. As planet earth makes one revolution around the sun in about 6 hours longer than one calendar year — and leap years were instituted hundreds of years ago to keep calendars in sync with our solar system — one more day has been added to February this year. Combined with the fact that this year Feb. 1 is falling on a Saturday, there’s one additional weekend for Lake George’s annual February festivities. While the winter carnival is expected to host its traditionally extensive array of activities, carnival promoters have also been planning a Mardi Gras festival for the last day of February and likely the following day. While details were being drafted early this week, tentative plans call for more than a dozen restaurants to hold themed parties as well as provide a serving of gumbo, jambalaya or other New Orleans-style food to people who purchase a beer during the Mardi Gras fest. The pending meteorological factor is one that has recurred several times over the last quarter-century — the surface of Lake George
Participants in one of the many Polar Plunge events at during 2019 Lake George Carnival dash into the frigid lakewaters off Shepard Park Beach. This year’s carnival is to hold the traditional activities — including the polar plunge sessions — and plans are now being developed for a bonus leap-year weekend of Feb. 29 and March 1. This latter weekend will likely host Mardi Gras related parties, promotions and New Orleans-style food at restaurants and taverns throughout Lake George Village. not freezing deep enough to support people or vehicles. As thick ice is a requirement for the traditional car and motorcycle and outhouse races to be held, carnival officials are now closely monitoring the formation of ice on the lake. In 2012 and 2016, various races and contests of Lake George Winter Carnival were held in village parking lots or on park plots because the lake didn’t freeze over, or the ice wasn’t thick enough. Well into the first week of January this year, an extended period of warm weather has kept the lake surface liquid. This week’s frigid weather, however, may form the ice necessary for the traditional lake-top activities to be held — or at least that’s the opinion of everoptimistic Carnival official Nancy Nichols. “With this week’s cold spell, ice has begun to set up,” she said. “I think were going to be fine.” But if the lake ice doesn’t develop, carnival officials have contingency plans in place, she said. ELIZABETHTOWN | In his State of the State and Executive Budget address last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo outlined several measures to small business cut taxes. “The state now enjoys its lowest corporate income tax rate since 1967 at 6.5 percent,” his budget plan says. “The state also has its lowest manufacturers’ tax rate since 1917, helping to ensure that New York businesses remain competitive, fueling the private sector innovation and investment that lead to job growth.” To sustain economic growth, Cuomo wants to cut tax rates for small corporate taxpayers. Specifically, the Executive Budget wants to: -- Reduce tax rates for companies with less than 100 employees and less than $390,000 in income from 6.5 percent to 4 percent, a measure that would affect an estimated 36,000 taxpayers. -- Triple the current Income Exclusion for farmers and sole proprietors: Current tax law allows sole proprietors and farmers who file under the Personal Income Tax and have less than $250,000 in net business income or net farm income to reduce their Adjusted Gross Income by five percent of such income. The Governor proposes to triple this benefit. -- Make the Investment Tax Credit Refundable for Farmers: Current law allows Investment Tax Credit (ITC) refunds only for new businesses. Cuomo’s new plan would make the ITC refundable for taxpayers whose primary source of income is from farming operations.

QUEENSBURY | The controversial state Bail and Discovery Reform laws which went into effect Jan. 1 has forced the release of suspects who are linked to serious crimes, Warren County officials were informed last week. Warren County Administrator Ryan Moore and county Sheriff Jim LaFarr detailed about how suspects charged with severe crimes — some of them implicating violence — have been released under the new laws.

From BAIL REFORM » pg. 1
“It’s our intent to keep this board informed of the real-world effects of this new legislation,” Moore told area officials at the county Board of Supervisors meeting Jan. 17. One suspect released under the new laws, charged with Making Terroristic Threats, threatened to shoot up the county Human Services building, Moore told the supervisors. Another released suspect, charged with first-degree burglary, allegedly broke into a citizen’s home and assaulted the resident, who sustained significant injuries, he added. LaFarr said after the meeting that the assault left the resident with a broken tooth, among other injuries. The county jail population, regularly well above 100 inmates in 2019, numbered 80 inmates as of Jan. 17, and has dropped as low as 70 in recent weeks. Moore added that the jail
was constructed to accommodate 186 inmates. These reports raised concerns among a number of supervisors, who said they were concerned about how the new laws take away judges’ discretion in setting bail or holding suspects charged with serious crimes. Another incident mentioned by county officials was how a 20-year-old suspect charged with arson — released due to the new bail reform laws — was subsequently arrested weeks later, charged with rape of a 14-yearold girl, a crime that allegedly occurred following his release. Another incident mentioned by county leaders was how a Warrensburg resident, charged with two felonies — one accusing him of stealing a shotgun — fled the state after he was released on his own recognizance. The newly enacted bail reform laws have prompted widespread public criticism, because they do not allow judges

— depending on the specific crime a suspect is charged with — to determine the danger to public safety posed by a released suspect, or whether they might not return to face charges. In the past, judges have been allowed to have suspects jailed on the basis of flight risk, or the severity of crimes they have committed in the past. LaFarr said Jan 17 that he was concerned about how bail reform laws may be compromising pubic safety. Speaking of the released suspect charged with terroristic threats, LaFarr offered his thoughts. “God forbid she gets a gun and shoots up the county building,” he said. Among those crimes for which suspects must be released, are criminally negligent homicide, burglary, robbery and drug trafficking. Newly elected Queensbury at-large
supervisor Rachel Seeber, the new chairman of the County Criminal Justice Committee, noted she was concerned about the impact of the new bail reform laws, “They have serious implications for our county, and local people have not had any input on it,” she said, noting that suspects charged with serious crimes who are released might subsequently commit violent offenses. “There’s no reason victims and their families should be put in harm’s way,” she said. “This is a slap in the face to crime victims — It’s horrible what they are going through right now.” New county chairman Frank Thomas also expressed his concerns, noting the new laws would prompt unintended consequences. “We know there are major problems with the new laws, and we are committed to pushing the state Legislature to fix the problems before innocent people are needlessly victimized,” he said in his recent state-of-the-county speech. ■

LAKE PLACID | The Adirondack Foundation, a Lake Placid organization whose mission is to enhance the lives of people in the Adirondacks through philanthropy, has opened applications for the 2020 Generous Acts grants. Grants typically fund programs that improve a community’s health, economy or education. The application is available online until 5 p.m., on Feb. 3. Last year, Generous Acts funded 71 applications for a total of $200,000 in grants. This year, the foundation expects to award $300,000. In addition, the Adirondack Foundation shares applications with other donors, who can step in and make awards on their own. “Generous Acts is a growing resource that positions us to respond to pressing community needs, identify trends, connect disparate programs with each other, and share information about funding opportunities within our network of supporters,” Foundation President and CEO Cali Brooks said in a statement. “Simply put, it is one of our most exciting areas of growth and opportunity in granting and giving.” Generous Acts grant applications can be submitted through the foundation’s online grants manager, adirondackfoundation.org/online-grants-manager. Requests up to $20,000 will be considered. The Foundation will fund operations or specific programs/projects, but does not typically fund large capital campaigns, tuition assistance, or re-granting programs, and welcomes applications in these priority areas: Wellbeing — Providing basic needs for people such as food
and housing, creating age-friendly communities, enhancing home and community-based services from early childhood development to elder care. Educational Opportunity — Promoting literacy, improving school-readiness for young children, strengthening post-secondary pathways and support networks for education and employment. Community and Economic Vitality — Supporting workforce initiatives to fill local employment needs, improving access to child care and other support services for working families, investing in local programs that demonstrate clear economic benefits. Nonprofit organizations, schools, and municipalities serving the people of the Adirondack region, defined for this purpose as all of Clinton, Essex, Franklin and Hamilton counties as well as the parts of Herkimer, St. Lawrence, Warren and Washington counties within the Adirondack Park boundary, are eligible to apply. Projects are evaluated for their alignment with Adirondack Foundation’s priority program areas, overall effectiveness, articulation of needs being served, and capacity of the applicant to carry out the work. With the inclusion of other donors, the foundation anticipates awarding as much as $500,000 in grants through Generous Acts this year. Hudson Headwaters Health Foundation, for instance, will review applications to identify and directly fund communitybased projects that address socio-economic issues affecting health. Applications will also be shared with other potential funders to amplify the amount of grant dollars supporting local efforts. Visit adirondackfoundation.org/generousacts to learn more. Interested applicants who have questions can contact Adirondack Foundation staff at 518-523-9904. ■

-- Repeal the penalty on small businesses for underpayment of estimated taxes: New York S corporations currently have to make estimated tax payments if they believe their tax will exceed $1,000 and are subject to an “underpayment of tax” penalty. Out of 400,000 New York S corporations, only 15,000 are required to make these payments. Cuomo’s plan would eliminate this penalty. -- Cut middle class taxes: 2020 is the third year of Cuomo’s multi-year tax cuts, enacted in 2016. Income tax rates will drop from 6.85 percent to 6.09 percent for taxpayers in the $40,000 to $150,000 income bracket; and to 6.41 percent for the $150,000 to $300,000 income bracket. The cuts are expected to save New Yorker taxpayers over $1.8 billion this year. -- Access to the Earned Income Credit, enacting legislation to allow the state to issue checks to eligible taxpayers for EITC, even if they do not claim it on tax returns and without the need to file an amended return.
KUDOS FOR TAX CUTS
Small business tax cuts drew hearty praise from the National Federation
of Independent Business, a non-profit association with more than 10,000 members in New York. State Director Greg Biryla said “The governor’s proposal to reduce the tax rate from 6.5 percent to 4 percent for qualified small businesses and expand existing tax exemptions for sole proprietors and small farms will create homegrown economic expansion.” NFIB has long advocated for small business tax relief, and now is the time to deliver, he said. At the New York Farm Bureau, President David Fisher pointed to challenges ahead as farm families look to rebound following years of low commodity prices, extreme weather events, trade barriers and mounting regulations. “Fortunately, Governor Cuomo is proposing significant tax cuts in his State of the State that are priorities of New York Farm Bureau,” Fisher said. “These include tripling the Current Income Exclusion for farmers who file under the personal income tax... (and making) the Investment Tax Credit refundable for taxpayers whose primary source of income is from farming operations.” ■

SEN. LITTLE HONORED Senator Betty Little (R-Queensbury) has long championed tax cuts for small business and farms, working to balance tax cuts against state investment in rural infrastructure. Cuomo’s budget announcement marked the start of her last legislative session, as she plans to retire at the end of the year. In his State of the State, Cuomo recognized the North Country senator for her decades of service. “Senator Betty Little - a schoolteacher who answered the call to public service over 30 years ago with principle, decency and compassion, that’s what Betty Little is all about. The longest-serving female Republican Senator ever - 18 years. Working across the aisle, Senator Little has accomplished more for the North Country than has been done in many decades. Betty Little will be missed by everyone, myself included.” After the address, Little said she was very touched Cuomo recognized her public service in his remarks. “Here in our region, my concern is sustainability. We need more full-time residents and the jobs and economic opportunity that makes that possible. Ecological protection is important, but I really want to emphasize economic prosperity. Investments in broadband must continue and we need to expand cell service for safety and for the economy. We need to continue investing in water and sewer infrastructure,
State Sen. Betty Little (R-Queensbury) listened as Gov. Andrew Cuomo presented State of the State remarks last week. Part of the 2020 plan would cut small business taxes from 6.5 to 4 percent for companies with less than 100 employees. Photo by Kevin P. Coughlin/ Office of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo
keeping our lakes and rivers clean and ensuring our schools and hospitals have the funding they need.” The 2020 State Budget will be a challenge given the $6 billion deficit, Little said. “Tough decisions will need to be made. What I will fight against is any region of the state being unfairly targeted by cuts. Tough choices need to be as fair as possible. And, addressing the financial challenges we face on the state level cannot come at the expense of local governments and property taxpayers with more unfunded mandates.” ■

Lake George Winter Carnival official Nancy Nichols said their organization’s party has annually offered convivial socializing. “The Snowball Gala is a kickoff to the winter activities in Lake George — it’s a lot of fun,” she said. “People attending can be dressed up or casual, whatever they feel comfortable in.” ■

The 2020 Lake George Winter Carnival calls for the annual zany outhouse races on ice — a crowd favorite — to be held Saturday Feb. 1 during the carnival’s first weekend. But this year, $2,000 in cash prizes are to go to the winning teams — a record for the carnival, Nichols said. “This year, we’re trying to get anyone and everyone to build an outhouse and enter it in the race,” she said. The first weekend also is to host pond hockey games, a chili cookoff, the annual carnival parade, and a keg toss contest. Each weekend, there will be a dog talent contest, pony rides, children’s activities —both outdoor and indoor — as well as bonfires on the beach, polar plunges, fireworks, chef competitions, horse-drawn carriage/sleigh rides. helicopter excursions, chainsaw wood-carving demonstrations, karaoke contests, a make-your-own sundae bar, and more. On the second weekend, Feb. 8 and Feb. 9, the annual sanctioned car races are to be held on top of the lake. For information or to register, contact Dave Burnham at 518-875-6956 or racing48@nycap.rr.com. Also occurring on the second weekend are ice diving demonstrations, an ATV poker run, and another keg toss. The third weekend, Feb. 15 and 16, is to feature sanctioned motorcycle ice races, the annual ice golfing tournament, and a second ATV poker run. The fourth weekend is to host the traditional 4x4 vehicle races, a second installment of the sanctioned car races, yet another ATV poker run, and a hot chocolate bar on the beach. Nichols said that this year, new events will be offered alongside the traditional activities that have drawn thousands of people each year to Lake George each February. “We welcome all area residents and visitors to come to Lake George and enjoy our many fun, family-oriented activities,” she said. The full schedule can be found online at: lakegeorgewintercarnival.com — and further details will be publicized throughout February in The Sun. ■

Climate Change is Insignificant compared to Worldwide Exponential Population Growth! By David Safrany
By Dan Alexander
PAID GUEST COLUMNIST
PUBLISHER
The Guest Editorial -- a few months ago - -”Climate change: triangulating on the truth” needs commenting on a number of points. The article is seriously flawed in a number of ways, yet written in a tone that implies it is authoritative when in fact it is an opinion piece by a pro-climate change spokesman. The author’s general premise that mankind is headed for certain and imminent disaster unless climate change ef fec t s are addressed immediately is total nonsense. No one denies that there are many coastal venues that are vital for national security and other reasons, and must be protected or relocated if their proximity to coastlines threatens them. HOWEVER, HE GLARINGLY FAILS TO DISCUSS OR EVEN MENTION THE POSSIBILIT Y THAT A MUCH MORE IMMINENT THREAT TO MANKIND IS NOT CLIM ATE CHANGE BUT, RATHER, UNCHECKED WORLDWIDE OVERDEVELOPMENT AND POPULATION GROWTH. Here’s why. The earth’s climate has been changing for as long as there has been a climate to change! Estimates range from millions of years to 2 to 3 billion years, depending on whose numbers you use. Either number is a long time -- even by geological standards -- and a lot of nasty things can happen in 2 to 3 billion years! Think: Shifting of the earth’s axis; Global atmospheric darkening by ash from worldwide volcanic eruptions; Global worldwide atmospheric dust from asteroid impacts; etc. Clearly, excluding some instantaneous massive asteroid impact, climate change phenomena are slow and long-term. They do not happen over a person’s lifetime. Significant coastal erosion, earth axis shifts and sea level fluctuations occur over centuries, millennia and even eons. Overdevelopment and unchecked
Impeachment phase II has now begun. While many believe they know beyond a shadow of a doubt which way the upcoming trial will turn out, the simple truth is with the wacky way partisan politics seems to be going these days, the real answer is, only time will tell. We continue to witness the ratcheting up of hardball politics, with each move on the chess table. Both sides are forced to circle the wagons while moving farther left and right to protect the power they now enjoy. As a kid growing up in the 1960s, I’m reminded of the conflict in Northern Ireland with the feud between the Catholics, who were Nationalists (right), and the Protestants Loyal Unionists (left). The Protestants wanted the province to remain a part of the United Kingdom while the Catholics wanted the province to become part of the Republic of Ireland. Caught in the middle, as peacekeepers, were the British Army and the Royal Ulster Constabulary viewing the escalating conflict as terrorism, while the IRA Irish Republican Army viewed the conflict as guerrilla warfare for national independence. Those battles raged on, from 1968 to 1998, and ultimately ended, leading to a power-sharing arrangement in the Northern Ireland Assembly. It seems odd today to think that two Christian sects, each embracing the core belief of “turning the other check”, could not get along, but it is not unlike what we are experiencing in a prosperous America today. Could our conflict escalate similarly here at home? Well, think no further than the left-leaning, militant anti-fascists Antifa movement that materialized during the last election and will likely reemerge soon as our national election kicks into high gear. While on the far right, we find groups like the neo-Nazis and the KKK always looking to stir up trouble. In many ways, our political discontent has been brewing since the impeachment of President Clinton in 1999. Cooler heads on either side have yet to appear, and anger seems to grow worse daily, ginned up by television talking heads and national media organizations. When looking back in history, ours, as well as other political conflicts, unless something changes soon to unite the nation’s majority, our evenly divided nation is unfortunately headed for even darker days ahead. Only time will tell where the guilt and innocence is found and how this period in our nation’s history will be looked upon by future generations when our history will be but a chapter in the past. ■

which means the message about the dangers of invasive species is not reaching all boaters. As advocates and people who care about the Lake, we all need to continue our vigilance with regard to the introduction of invasive species, and continue working with boaters and boating organizations to make them aware of the dangers of transporting invasive species.” The Lake George Association is continuing to advocate for the state to renew and strengthen the Invasive Species Transport Law that provides education, outreach, and ensures that the message gets through to all residents and visitors about invasive species dangers. We are working to reduce the number of boat inspections that will be needed next year through broader education and outreach programs. — Pat Dowd, Lake George ■
To the Editor: “We thank the Lake George Park Commission for their work protecting Lake George, and the Governor’s office and our partners for joining with the Lake George Association to pay for this important program to protect Lake George’s water,” said Walt Lender, LGA Executive Director. “Lake George is fortunate to have a responsible, proactive state agency enforcing laws to protect our water quality,” Lender said. “But boats with invasives are still coming to Lake George, and that is a concern.” “More than 1,400 boats a season need to be decontaminated,

agencies and all 5 branches of the military agree that climate change needs immediate mitigation, there must be credibility to their climate change conclusions. Sorry, sir, even given the benefit of a doubt that they are in fact expert on climate change, doesn’t mean they are right! The “experts” have been wrong many times in the past! Isaac Newton -- certainly an expert in mathematical physics -- concluded that flight would require much more power for sustenance until Bernoulli’s fluid-flow findings proved him wrong. “Expert” scientists held symposia on “polywater” whose very existence later proved to be wrong. The entire U.S. market for mobile phones was estimated by marketing experts to be 5000 units! Similarly low predictions were made for copying machines! The Chicago Tribune ran the classic headline in 1948 that read “Dewey beats Truman” -- one of the greatest media blunders ever! Hillary projected to defeat Trump by a landslide in 2016 is another media blunder! And there are many, many more examples! Clearly, instead of endless discussions defending the consensus opinions of climate change “experts”, we should be talking about the threats of short-term versus long-term threats to mankind. The amazing thing is that many of an ignorant populace, politicians and climate change activists actually WANT this growth. THE POLITICIANS’ SILENCE ON THE REAL CRISIS -- WORLDWIDE UNCHECKED POPULATION GROWTH -- IS DEAFENING! But not to worry -- unless you are a young person. If the world population doubling time continues at 50 to 70 years, long-term climate change effects, in only a few years, will become the least of mankind’s problems. The politicians’ legislative lethargy will soon be interrupted by a little thing colloquially called “The Population Bomb”. BOOM! ■
Worldwide exponential population growth, on the other hand, are alarmingly short-term issues -- of the order of only 50 to well under 100 years!! While politicians and their climate activist minions are demanding huge multinational investments IMMEDIATELY in order to mitigate long-term climate change effects, the world’s population continues to grow by more than 1 percent a year, which equates to approximately 80 to 100 million people a year, and a doubling every 50 to 70 years -- a rough estimate but in the ballpark! The population is currently 7.7 billion. If this growth rate continues, in only 50 to 70 years the population will approach or even exceed 15 billion! Clearly, the imminent threat to mankind is the societal unrest that comes with this exponential population growth --- some of which we are already seeing -- crime, pollution, destruction of the Amazon rain forest because of government-promoted immigration to the region, drug addiction, etc. -- because they are short-term effects -- VERY short-term! The devastation to future generations in only 50 to 70 years should scare the hell out of young people -- most of whom will still be alive! The author tries to justif y his premise by evoking something called “triangulating on the truth”. Triangulating on truth?!! There’s no such thing as “triangulating on the truth”! There’s a little thing called the Scientific Method by which truth is defined as critically-proven irrefutable fact, and doesn’t need “triangulating”! The author’s “triangulating on the truth”, in fact, is really nothing more than narrowing down a large number of possibilities to a few -- none of which is in fact established irrefutable fact. A consensus of most likely possibilities is not truth and -- rightly or wrongly -- is nothing but opinion. To claim that somehow a consensus of groupthink opinions leads to truth is ludicrous beyond explanation! 60 years ago: January 1960 By Jean Hadden COLUMNIST
When January does resist and the January thaw comes along, even for a day or two, we can celebrate, cautiously. No fanfare. No dancing in the streets. Just a cautious thank you to old Mother Nature for that glimpse of spring in the distance. A happy note – Clayfield’s (formerly Kugel’s) Warrensburg department store says that they will cheerfully exchange for merchandise that money you received for Christmas.

Must defend gun rights
To the Editor: As we see our rights under attack we are less safe in New York State. Back on Sept. 24, 2019, The Sun had a letter that called for gun rights to evolve much the same as motor vehicle laws have. Then this weeks Jan. 11, had a letter that calls for Warren County to stand for the 2nd Amendment, but reading it it is more for the sale and repair of gun’s and parts. I would like to inject this in the fight for the second, this past week we saw an all to often result of laws coming down from the Capitol. An innocent bystander we injured
in Troy because of a shortage of officers (reported 20 positions open) for officers and detectives. We in the North Country need to be able to defend our self’s because even a 3 minute response time is to late. Our governor and the Dem’s in the Capitol keep shoving insane law’s down our throat’s. We do not have an officer on every street corner. No. 1 the New Bail Law needs to be repealed, two we need to have common sense in place so that law abiding citizen can freely buy and sell guns and gun parts, just as we buy and sell car parts. We do not out law parts and cars because of the daily carnage they cause. — Pat Farrell, Brant Lake ■

Stefanik cosponsors legislation on new bail reform laws WASHINGTON, D.C. | Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is a cosponsor of the bipartisan Bill’s Promise Act, legislation that would direct the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct a comprehensive assessment of how individuals on pre-trial release are monitored at the federal, state, and local levels. Under New York’s new bail reform policy, cash bail is not required for most defendants accused of misdemeanors and non-violent felonies including those arrested for drug possession, or even many property crimes like theft and burglary. Instead, the law encourages alternatives such as supervision by a pretrial services agency. The bill addresses issues surrounding pretrial release programs in New York and ensures
communities are not put at risk; the legislation was carefully developed with input from the law enforcement and anti-violence advocacy communities. “I am proud to cosponsor this bill to address dangerous bail reform policies that continue to put our communities at risk,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “This legislation will require an assessment of failed bail reform laws exactly like the one that Governor Cuomo has implemented in New York, which has had significant impacts in the North Country and put many communities at risk. I stand united with local law enforcement and various members of our communities against these harmful bail reform policies and look forward to working with my colleagues to moving this legislation forward.” ■
Stefanik named Trump New York campaign chair GLENS FALLS | Congresswoman Elise Stefanik has been selected as a Trump campaign honorary New York state chair, the Trump campaign announced last week. Stefanik said that she will work to advance President Trump’s results-driven agenda up and down the ballot in New York. She represents New York’s 21st District, whose voters overwhelmingly elected President Trump in 2016. “I’m honored to have been chosen as a New York state chair for the Trump campaign in 2020,” said Stefanik. “President Trump’s agenda of creating jobs, strengthening our military, securing our borders, negotiating better trade deals, and lowering crime rates has historic support in the 21st Congressional District and across upstate New York. I’m
looking forward to working with his campaign to deliver another decisive victory in my district. President Trump’s record of results will win handily over far-left radical resistance in November.” “Our New York Trump Victory leadership team will work to elect Republicans across the state,” said Brad Parscale, campaign manager of Donald J. Trump for President, Inc., and Ronna McDaniel, chairwoman of the RNC. “President Trump has delivered a soaring economy, rebalanced trade relations, lowered healthcare costs, and fought to secure our border. His successes can be felt nationwide and electing Republicans across New York will help to ensure he can achieve more victories for the American people for many years to come.” ■
Stefanik Named Member of President Trump’s Impeachment Defense Team WASHINGTON, D.C. | Congresswoman Elise Stefanik released the below statement following the White House announcement that she will serve as a member of President Trump’s Impeachment Defense Team: “I am honored to be named by President Trump as a Member of his Impeachment Defense Team,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “I am proud to stand up for the Constitution, my constituents in New York’s 21st District, and the American people’s vote.”
Statement front the Press Secretary Announcing Congressional Members of the President’s Impeachment Team Today, President Donald J. Trump announced that the following Members of the House of Representatives will serve as part of his
team working to combat this hyper-partisan and baseless impeachment. This initial list includes the following Members: Congressman Doug Collins; Congressman Mike Johnson ; Congressman Jim Jordan; Congresswoman Debbie Lesko; Congressman Mark Meadows; Congressman ,John Ratcliffe; Congresswoman Elise Stefanik; Congressman Lee Zeldin. Throughout this processt these Members of Congress have provided guidance to the White House team, which was prohibited from participating in the proceedings concocted by Democrats in the House of Representatives. The President looks forward to their continued participation and is confident that the Members will help expeditiously end this brazen political vendetta on behalf of the American people. ■

WARRENSBURG | With their trademark hot shooting and nimble defense, the Warrensburg girls basketball team secured first place in Adirondack League Division II with a 64-48 win over Hartford on Jan. 17. Burgher senior Abigail Ranous, the team’s scoring leader who has been averaging about 18 points per game, lead all players with 25 points. This tally included two baskets from behind the arc. Her twin sister Aubrey Ranous, known as a skilled senior defender, excelled on offense in the game, scoring 19 points. Senior point guard Hope Boland scored 10 points as well as serving as playmaker. Junior guard Sara Langworthy shot a three-pointer and a foul shot, while freshman Audrey Steves contributed 4 points, and senior Tenisha Tyrell chipped in 2 points. Three days earlier, Warrensburg had perhaps its toughest challenge of the year, a game against Fort Edward, which this year has resurrected their winning spirit of a decade ago. The event was a hard-fought battle between two of the most talented teams in the Adirondack League. The Burghers had balanced scoring and solid defense across their roster, but the Forts — powered by Gaby Thomas’ triple-double — captured a key 70-64 win. Thomas scored 20 points, brought down 23 rebounds and executed 14 assists in the game. Aiding in the Forts’ first win over the Burghers in four-plus years was Haleigh Condon with 17 points. Warrensburg lead in the opening minutes, but the Forts gained an advantage that remained for the rest of the game, although the Burghers kept the score very close at times. Warrensburg’s high point later in the game was a 35-35 tie in the second half after Aubrey Ranous scored two 3-pointers. Warrensburg outscored Fort Edward in the second and fourth quarters, but by one and two points respectively — while Fort Edward tallied a wider lead in the first and

LAKE GEORGE ADVANCES WITH WIN
Lake George improved their 2019-20 season record to 4-1 in the Adirondack League and 5-7 overall with a 38-27 win Jan. 17 over North Warren. The Warriors’ win was propelled by senior power forward Ava Pushor’s 21 points, as well as by the team’s 12-3 run in the second quarter — which was partially offset by an 11-5 resurgence by the Cougars in the third quarter. Lake George prevailed, however, finishing off the game with a 10-3 final stanza. Following Pushor in scoring was senior guard Gabby Marchello with 8 points, sophomore point guard Brenna Metivier with 4 points, senior shooting guard Mara Knoop with 3 points and junior forward Mikayla Duffy with 2. Leading the Cougars was Nicole Buckman with 11 points, followed by Kaitlyn Kramar with 9 points, Jodi Bartlett with a 3-pointer. Tia Buttino and Lauren Monroe added 2 points each.
BOLTON BOOSTS THEIR STELLAR RECORD
Bolton secured first place in Division II of the Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference Jan. 16 with a 33-25 win over Keene. Bolton’s Maria Baker lead all scorers with 15 points, followed by teammate Kate VanAuken with 12 points, Jane Pfau with 4 points, Skyler Scott with 2 points and Alysha McGarr with 1 point. Alyssa Summo lead Keene in scoring with 12 points. With this victory, Bolton advanced to 8-1 in the conference and 10-1 overall. ■

McKenna brothers achieve wrestling landmarks
Eagles win defensive battle By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR
By Thom Randall
KEENE VALLEY | The 20th ranked Bolton girls varsity basketball team (NYSSWA Class D) scored a 33-25 win over Keene in a defensive contest where both teams played hard to the end. “It would have to be this team tonight or Schroon Lake who played the best defense against us,” said Kate Van Auken, who scored 11 points for the Eagles in the win. “They were very gritty on defense and we had to overcome that. They were very good defensively.” Van Auken added with the string defense played by Keene, she had to adjust her game and focus on basics. “You have to go back to the roots and drive to the basket and try to get the calls in the paint, get to the line and try to heat up with your foul shots,” she said, Maria Baker led the Eagles with 15 points, thanks to six free throws and a key three-pointer in the fourth quarter. Jane Pfau added two points, while Skyler Scott added two and Alysha McGarr one while having a strong night on the boards. The Eagles made 11 free throws in the game, while Keene was 2-for-19 at the line. “Tonight was a defensive battle and both teams hustled,” said Keene coach Josh Whitney. The game could have gone either way, and in my opinion the game was really decided on the free throw line. We had balanced scoring again and I am pleased with the effort.” Alyssa Summo scored 12 points for the Beavers, being guarded by Scott.

WARRENSBURG | It has been a memorable week for two Warrensburg High School athletes. Hunter McKenna, a junior, has achieved a goal that will go down in school history: he has amassed 162 varsity career wrestling wins, setting a new school record. Meanwhile, his brother Tanner, a sophomore, reached his own milestone this week: his 100th varsity career win. Hunter McKenna set the new school record Jan. 18 after winning four matches at the Granville Duals and taking the championship of the 152-pound weight class. After one initial forfeit, he pinned all three successive opponents to earn the title — one of his many championships over his lengthy wrestling career. Hunter would have surpassed the school record earlier, but in fall 2018 he broke his back in a dirt-bike crash, and he missed the first half of the 2018-19 season. Tanner reached 100 varsity wins in a match Jan. 15 against a Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George opponent, whom he pinned in one minute and three seconds in the 132-pound weight class. So far this year, Hunter has a 30-1 win-loss record.
Maria Baker drives into the lane for Bolton in their win over Keene Thursday. Photo by Keith Lobdell “My primary job on the team is to shut down girls on defense,” Scott said. “I feel I can shut down anyone on defense so I went into this game with confidence that I could do my job and I had the skills to do it.” Megan Quinn added six points for Keene, with Emily Whitney scoring four and Haylie Buysse three. The Eagles will have a big week coming up, playing Lake Placid at home Tuesday before traveling to a Friday matchup in Elizabethtown with Boquet Valley, “I look forward to showing we have grown as a team and our skill as a group has improved,” said Scott. ■

Lake George derails North Warren’s unbeaten record By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
CHESTERTOWN | Minutes after a hardfought battle Jan. 17 between Adirondack League rivals Lake George and North Warren, Warriors’ boys basketball coach Blake White looked at his score book. “A guy coming off the bench scoring 21 points, you gotta love that,” he said about his six-foot sophomore shooting guard Julius Moffitt, who scored two key three-pointers in the final quarter to put the Warriors ahead for good in their 67-59 defeat of North Warren on Jan. 17. A depleted roster of North Warren basketball players — anchored by high-scoring guard Anthony Girard and beefy center Tanner Dunkley — fought to defend their undefeated season record, but fell short against Lake George. The Warriors employed tough defense along with efficient offense to defeat the Cougars, now 11-1 overall and 7-1 in the Adirondack League. Key to Lake George’s win was how Moffitt and his teammates routinely swarmed around Girard, curbing his offensive output. During the fi rst half, Girard had mixed results shooting primarily from outside — but in the third quarter, he repeatedly drove through traffic toward the basket, flew airborne through outstretched arms and sank shots that seemed improbable. Girard’s soaring offensive attack and Dunkley’s bruising presence under the basket gave North Warren a solid lead midway in the third quarter — but eventually Lake George wore the Cougars down, scoring 18 points to North Warren’s 8 in the final period to win the game. North Warren’s James Steen and Reece Bradley were sidelined Jan. 17 due to the flu,
Lake George junior forward/guard Cole Clarke (center left) collides with North Warren senior guard Ryan Miller as he takes a shot — while Cougar center Tanner Dunkley blocks Warrior center Luke Pelchar from a potential rebound, during the Jan. 17 game, between the two Adirondack League powerhouses. Lake George won the epic battle 67-59, ending North Warren’s 11-game unbeaten streak Photo by Thom Randall and Dunkley’s endurance was compromised by a similar malady, spectators said. Cougar Coach James Cuyler, however, didn’t blame the illnesses. He praised his players, but said his team had some “defensive lapses” that allowed Lake George to score two three-pointers in the fourth quarter, baskets that changed the game’s momentum. “I give Lake George credit; they had a good game plan,” he said. “Now, this is where the season starts. A game like this builds character. We’ve got to figure it out and get back to work.” For Lake George, Moffitt shot four 3-pointers
and 9 foul shots for 21 points and sophomore guard/forward Cameron Orr scored 18 points, which included four treys. They were followed by junior forward/center Luke Pelchar with 10 points and 10 rebounds, senior guard Juan Garcia with six points, senior forward Shane Clarke with three points and four assists, and junior center Torin Davies with two points. North Warren was lead by Girard’s gamehigh 25 points, alongside Dunkley’s 15 points and 12 rebounds. The remaining points were scored by three senior guards: Ryan Miller with 11, Wyatt Gereau with 4, and Nate Hopper with 4 points accompanied by 7 rebounds.
Coach White praised North Warren for their gritty effort while noting that his players effectively curbed the Cougars’ offense, which has averaged nearly 80 points per game so far this season. “They made some great plays when they needed to, but our defense kept them under 60 points which was one of our goals tonight,” he said. “We made Girard work for every shot he got.” White also said that early in the game, his team was committing a lot of turnovers, throwing the ball away, but they tightened up their teamwork later on. “Later on, we became more patient on offense — when we took our time and ran something, we got good looks and made baskets,” he said, looking onto the Cougars’ court as the loyal crowd dispersed. “There was a lot of heart out there tonight,” White said, praising North Warren’s effort.
JAYVEE COUGARS WIN IN OVERTIME
Although the varsity game disappointed local fans, the Cougars’ junior varsity squad prevailed. With their game tied 48-48 as regular time concluded, the junior-varsity players scored 11 more points to Lake George’s 4 in the extra period to win their most challenging game of the season — and protect their undefeated 2019-20 record. Next up for both North Warren teams is a dual showdown Friday Jan. 24 with Granville. The Golden Horde’s varsity defeated Lake George 66-59, on Jan. 8, so North Warren is expecting a tough battle. As of Jan. 18, Granville was leading the Adirondack League’s Division I with an 8-0 league record and 9-3 overall, while North Warren was maintaining a large lead in Division III of the league. ■
Warriors and Cougars show strength in mid-week games By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARREN COUNTY | Although the Jan. 17 showdown between Adirondack League leaders North Warren and Lake George attracted considerable attention this week among sports fans, each of the two teams won a key game two days earlier, demonstrating their substantial talents. On Jan. 15, North Warren defeated Corinth 87-42 with an explosive offense — as well as stingy defense that allowed only three Corinth players to score — and those Tomahawk players’ tallies were less than 10 points each. Leading the Cougars was shooting point guard Anthony
Girard with 28 points and 6 rebounds. Center Tanner Dunkley scored 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Senior guard Ryan Miller scored 15 points and Senior guard Nate Hopper tallied 13 points and 6 rebounds. Junior forward Ryan Hill sank three baskets while senior guard James Steen scored 5 points. Junior guard Jack Jennings and senior guard Wyatt Gereau each scored two points.
WARRIORS SNAP SLUMP
Also on Jan. 15, Lake George executed an epic comeback effort to defeat Argyle by a score of 71-62. For the Warriors, the game represented a rebound from a mid-season slump during which they lost Jan. 8 to Granville 66-59 and were defeated by Hadley-Luzerne Jan. 10 by a wider gap — 57-43.
Trailing 15-21 in the first quarter and 30-40 at halftime in the Argyle game, the Warriors pounded the Scots 41-22 in the second half to win the Adirondack League contest. In this memorable showdown, junior center/forward Luke Pelchar lead with 30 points and 13 rebounds; sophomore guard/forward Cameron Orr scored 18 points and brought down 6 rebounds; junior guard/forward Cole Clarke tallied 16 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists; while sophomore guard Julius Moffitt contributed 4 points and senior guard Juan Garcia added 3. For Argyle, Scots’ standout athlete Peyton Lufk in scored 26 points which featured five three-pointers; and Derek Liddle scored 17 points. ■

Wrestling coach Mark Trapasso said Sunday that both Hunter and Tanner were outstanding wrestlers — aggressive and skilled who are determined to continually improve. Hunter and Tanner have invested many years into wrestling, with hundreds of strenuous workouts and practices to build strength, learn wrestling moves and develop strategies. Both of them started wrestling as toddlers in the early 2000s at home with their father, Scott McKenna and mother Kim (Lamy) McKenna. Scott was a wrestler at South Glens Falls then in college at SUNY Brockport, and Kim was a star athlete at Warrensburg High — for years a catcher on the softball team that went to the state finals several times. As soon as they could walk, Hunter and Tanner wrestled with their parents in the living room, a daily routine they followed through their pre-teen years, they recalled this week. At the age of four, both Hunter and Tanner started competitive wrestling in the Warrensburg Youth Wrestling program. In 2010, Scott and Kim outfitted a room above the garage of their home as a wrestling and weight room — because Kim wanted to protect the furniture and walls from damage from the rambunctious family wrestling matches. They made the decision soon after Kim’s elbow punctured the living room wall during a match with their children, she recalled. “Years ago, it was wrestling 24-7 in the living room,” she said. “Our kids just

assumed that if you were an adult in our house, you were ready to wrestle.” After wrestling in the competitive local “Pee Wee” program, Hunter was drafted as a seventh grader straight into varsity, skipping the modified and junior varsity programs. Tanner joined as an eighth grader — he would have been on varsity a year before, but he hadn’t reached the minimum weight. Sunday, Hunter recalled his very first varsity matches. He wrestled in the 2015 Saranac Early Bird tournament in the 106pound weight class although he weighed only 99 pounds — yet he placed second overall, behind Trevor Winchell, a teammate. Since then, Hunter has won many awards. He’s won Adirondack League All-Star honors nearly every year he’s wrestled varsity. In early 2019, he was named a Section II AllStar and was chosen to compete in the state tournament after winning the section’s Class D tournament and was runner-up champion for Section II, his second consecutive year for the feat. He ended the season with a 37-7 record. In the Class D tournament, Hunter was champion in 2017 and 2019, and runner-up in 2018 and 2016. In the Section II tournament, he was 4th in 2017, and sixth in 2016 as a seventh grader. “I’ve wrestled a long time and achieved many of my goals, and that’s pretty huge for me,” Hunter said, noting he plans to study criminal justice in college, then become a state Trooper. “Every day of every season, I’m working hard wrestling and studying,” he said.

The last wrestler to set this school record was three-time state tournament place finisher Ryan Black, with 161 wins in 2008. Photo provided
“Athletics and academics — and making my parents happy — is a balancing act: it’s a lot more than just wrestling.”
TANNER HAS ALSO ACHIEVED SUCCESS
In 2018 as an 8th grader, Tanner placed second in the Class D tournament, and won the championship of his weight class last year, during which he compiled a 41-7 record. He’s also

Tanner McKenna stands celebrates his latest career achievement of 100 varsity wins following a match against a Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George opponent on Jan. 15. Courtesy photo won various tournament titles. Both years, he was runner-up Section II champion. Alongside his brother, Tanner was selected to compete in the state tournament last season, he recalled. “I feel like this 100th win is quite accomplishment,” he said. “For years as a kid, I watched varsity matches and saw Warrensburg wrestlers reach 100 wins — and now I’m in their shoes.” ■
