according to the Indian Lake Chamber of Commerce (ILCC), who briefed the town board last week and asked for their support. The event will be organized under the newly-minted American Quadrathlon Association, said Chamber of Commerce President Bill Murphy and fellow chamber board member Leonard Carbonara. Board members appeared enthused. “The Iron Man and triathlon competitions are quite popular, so I think this (quadrathlon) has potential,” said Councilwoman Patricia Ryan-Curry, referring to the annual event in Lake Placid. » Quadrathlon Cont. on pg. 3

Warrensburg High to present ‘Secret Garden’ By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

WARRENSBURG | Since the turn of the century, acclaimed Warrensburg High School Vocal Music Director Jim Corriveau has been imagining his students performing an award-winning Broadway musical that was based on a classic work of English literature. This specter will be realized this weekend, as the Warrensburg Theater Group presents “The Secret Garden,” 7:30 p.m. for three performances at Warrensburg High beginning this Thursday and running until Saturday. “For 17 years, I had my eye on this show and I decided this was the year for ‘The Secret Garden’ because it fits this group like a glove,” Corriveau said, noting that the musical is vocally challenging. Set in the early 1900s, the story is about a young English girl, Mary Lennox, raised in the colony of India but sent to live with her uncle Archibald Craven in England after she is orphaned by a cholera outbreak. Craven is grieving his wife Lily’s death in childbirth. Mary’s tenacious spirit is recog-

nized by caring servants, who introduce her to a secret garden created by her Aunt Lily, left to grow wild since she died. Mary’s personality blossoms — and her uncle’s grief dissipates — as she and a young gardener bring new life to the neglected garden. Craven’s son Colin, confined to bed since birth by his uncle’s misplaced fears, discovers his own mobility and renewal through Mary’s influence. Warrensburg senior Natalie Davey, who won the regional Best Supporting Actress title in the 2017 National High School Theatre Awards competition, portrays Martha, a talkative nanny in the Craven household. Davey, who’s been involved in Corriveau’s drama productions since she was in 8th grade, is just one of the talented cast members of this weekend’s production. Davey portrays Martha, a nanny in the Craven household. At a rehearsal this week, she said she was excited to take on the role, because her character has a heavy Yorkshire accent. She added that Corriveau was inspiring because he makes his cast members feel like family members. “For such a small school that we are, it’s

» Quadrathlon Cont. from pg. 1 The event’s early slogan? “Do the Q.” The quadrathlon one-ups the triathlon by adding kayaking to swimming, biking and running. Although the quadrathlon started in Europe in 1987, no other quadrathlon has been run in the U.S. since then. Carbonara said early plans for a course in Indian Lake include an approximately half-mile swim, followed by a four-mile paddle.

really encouraging that we have such an amazing drama program,” she said, noting that Corriveau “channels” himself into making each production a success. Mariah Nissen, a WCS senior who was also chosen to participate in the national theater competition, portrays the ghost of Aunt Lily. Nissen said the role is her favorite of all she’s undertaken in high school because it matches up with her operatic singing style. She said that Corriveau was adept at inspiring and motivating the cast. “He knows how to pull talent out of people — and he has different ways of doing it with each student,” she said. Nissen is planning on pursuing studies at Crane School of Music. Grace Cupp, a junior who has been involved in the drama program for 5 years, plays the lead role of Mary. Carter Germain, a senior, plays the role of Archibald Craven, having delved into the role with a passion for months prior to the start of the rehearsals. He also praised Corriveau for his approach. “He puts his heart and soul into his productions,” Germain said, noting Corriveau

Athletes would then get out of the water and perform a 10k bike ride followed by a 10k run. ILCC aimed to sign up at least 50 people at the Adirondack Summer Sports & Fitness Expo held last week in Saratoga Springs. Carbonara said he is optimistic the event will see liftoff because there are other triathlon or “Iron Man” events held in the region. He said there are over 550,000 members of the national triathlon association, and triathletes are always looking for something different to do.

had high expectations from his cast. “He wants to make every show perfect, but everything he does is always out of love,” he said. About 45 students are involved in this 19th annual production of Corriveau’s at Warrensburg High. Randy Ross, parent of cast member Gary Ross, has invested considerable work in building the sets, Corriveau said. “The whole community is involved,” he said. “We’re really going ‘all out’ for this production to make it a stunning musical.” The cast also includes Jack Binder, Kayla Casey, James Cunniffe, Jacob Johnson, John Kelly, Olivia McNeill, Dan Monthony, Nick Putney, and Greg Shambo. Mikelean Allen is the production manager and costume designer; Bethany Birkholz is the choreographer. One of the outstanding aspects of the production is that it features a pit orchestra of professional musicians. Performances are scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Tickets on sale at Warrensburg High School’s Main Office. Tickets are $9 for general admission and $7 for students and seniors. ■

According to the World Quadrathlon Federation (WQF), the event always begins with the swim and finishes with the run, but the kayaking and biking events can be switched. And while the WQF lists middle and long distance events, Murphy said they are proposing Indian Lake host a sprint distance quadrathlon, which includes a three-quarters of a kilometer swim, 20km bike, 4km kayak, and a 5km run. The newly formed AQA has copyrighted the name “quadrathlon” under Carbonara’s name, and ILCC would be entitled to license fees for others’ use of the name. ■

Bands ‘n Beans to rock the house this Sunday By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

LAKE GEORGE | Since Kurt Cobain’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” first blared from boom-boxes across the U.S., Bands n’ Beans has been the pre-eminent annual party in the region. This confluence of carousal and culture has for nearly three decades provided relief from cabin fever for 1,000 or more revelers, enjoying creative concoctions of chili, convivial socializing and the music of eight or more bands on two stages. This year’s edition is to be held from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday March 25 at Roaring Brook Ranch off Route 9N in Lake George. Heralding the coming of spring in the North Country, Bands N’ Beans annually attracts a wall-to-wall crowd with partyers ranging in age from their 20s to their 70s. This celebration features a diverse range of musical genres: straight-ahead rock to rhythm and blues, country rock, and bluegrass — both original tunes as well as classic hits — prompting a packed dance floor.

The party’s chili contest induces dozens of professional chefs to annually dish up creative, spicy concoctions to vie for awards and bragging rights. Rock Hill Bakehouse’s hearty bread accompanies the savory chili. This year, 34 restaurants and taverns are represented in the chili cookoff, and nine bands and musicians will be performing: Rattail, Dirt Cheap, Stony Creek Band, The Switch, Rich Ortiz, Chris Ballini, Tim Wechgelaer & Friends, Cowboy Ernie Sites, plus The 317: Emanation and Dolan & the Flynn Brothers. Bands ‘n Beans is the premier fundraiser for the Lake George Arts Project, helping fund its Summer Concert Series, the group’s Courthouse Gallery exhibitions, and the annual Lake George Jazz Weekend. Tickets are available for $20 in advance at the Barnsider Restaurant in Lake George or Tavern 16 in Stony Creek, or at the door for $25. ■ Revelers dance at a recent year’s edition of Bands ‘n Beans, the region’s premier party that annually heralds the arrival of spring. Water bills still issued three years after house demolished

Unpaid water bills may be treated like unpaid taxes in the Town of Johnsburg, so property owners are advised to make sure the town knows to take demolished houses off the tax rolls and water billing lists. File photo

Phantom bill haunts homeowner long after house was leveled By Christopher South STA FF W RITER

JOHNSBURG | Note to homeowners: If you tear down your house, you’re still on the hook for water bills unless you inform local officials that the structure no longer exists. Such was the case facing Town of Johnsburg officials earlier this month when confronted by a homeowner with an outstanding balance. Councilwoman Laurie Arnheiter reported that a property

owner, who has not been identified, had received a water bill for a River Road property where the house was torn down three years ago. The North Creek Water District bills residential property owners a flat rate of $220.80 annually. There are no water meters to indicate how much water is being used — if any. If the water district customer ignores the water because he or she is not using it, the amount of the bill can be attached to the property, just like unpaid taxes. Assessor Christian Holt said he was aware that the house was torn down, but the property is still privately owned, and there might be plans to construct a new home there in the future. But the property owner has never made an attempt to get the no-longer-existing house off the tax rolls or the water department’s ledger, he said. “It’s all based on paper,” Holt said. The specific piece of paper the town would look for as an assessor is a “certificate of completion” issued by the Warren County Fire Prevention & Building Code Enforcement office. That office’s administrator, Charles Wallace, said if someone wants to demolish a structure, they would start by visiting their town’s zoning office, which would issue a zoning compliance certificate. The county’s code office would issue a demolition permit, perform a pre-demolition and post-demolition inspection, and then issue a certificate to the applicant. The applicant could be the property owner or the contractor doing the demolition. In either case, a copy of the certificate is sent to the town zoning office where the demolition occurred. Without being informed of the demolition, a water bill could be issued for a property where a house was demolished. ■

Service From the Editorial Board above self Winter sports delivers yet again Is it a phrase that just sounds good or is it a life we all try to live? For many, it’s a code deeply rooted in who By Dan Alexander they are and how they • PUBLISHER • conduct their lives. For others, it’s nothing more than a pickup line for creating an opportunity that allows them to take advantage of those who place their faith and trust in what is being promised. Americans have always been incredibly generous with their time and money. We do our best to recognize the right intentions in all we meet, but more and more, we see serious cracks in the overall moral structure that was at one time the hallmark of our national personality. Stories come to light all too frequently these days. Over the weekend, we heard about four individuals in Indiana collecting funds for the Wounded Warrior Foundation — not the Project. The Secret Service discovered their good intentions were nothing more than a scam to put over $125,000 at their disposal instead of sending the funds to wounded military personnel. Last week, we reported on the dealings of a man in Ticonderoga whose ambition outweighed his good intentions when he sought investors and took advantage of employees who were sent out to do his bidding. Sadly, there will always be those who see opportunity in the disguise of service. Perhaps even sadder is the number of service clubs and organizations that once carpeted the nation made up of energetic local community members whose sole purpose was to support their community through good deeds. Around the country and even here locally, their memberships are in decline — not because the need is no longer there, but because these upstanding men and women are growing old and passing away. The next generations, especially in smaller communities, have not stepped up to fill the voids. These devoted community clubs work tirelessly to raise funds by hosting events and projects only to return the funds to the community where the needs were the greatest. There are so many good causes and valuable local organizations that need our support, not just in funding but in member volunteers to keep these pillars of service fully staffed and actively serving the needs of our communities. These organizations defined what a community is all about, reminding us of the importance of giving back, but they’ll fade into history if we don’t take steps to reverse these trends soon. ■

As we get ready to shift gears out of winter and into spring — maybe — we can now look back at what has been a very successful winter sports season. In our region, we can now boast three state championships. First off the bat, the Lake Placid Blue Bombers boy’s Nordic ski team won their third straight NYSPHSAA championship at Gore Mountain in North Creek. Three straight state titles is unprecedented in Section VII. The Chazy Eagles have won three state titles in four years twice, but no one has won three straight until the skiers of Lake Placid. These are skiers who you may see again after high school on an Olympic ski trail near you. The next state title came in perhaps the most unexpected of places: the bowling alley. Along with a new bowling center in Syracuse hosting the state championship came a new state champion as the AuSable Valley boy’s team became the first male squad from Section VII to win a bowling state title. The championship was also the first ever for the school, which recently has had chances to win in both boy’s and girl’s basketball. Then comes Lake George. They just won

Executive budget proposal could harm rural health programs

To the Editor: Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposed budget again this year seeks to undermine important rural health initiatives which have prevented disease, enrolled residents in health insurance, trained health care professionals to serve in rural communities and leveraged millions of federal and foundation dollars that have been invested here in the North Country. The governor again this year has put at risk the Rural Health Network (RHN) program. Thankfully we now know that the state Assembly and Senate have rejected this year’s cuts in their budget bills, but unfortunately have left in place the 21 percent cut levied in the 2017-18 budget. As one of New York state’s 35 rural health networks, the North Country Behavioral Healthcare Network (NCBHN) vigorously opposes the proposed cuts to the rural health network program which

their third state title in six years, defeating Northstar Christian Academy, the team they lost to last year. The Warriors had to work hard to get the win, almost joining Panama from two years ago as giving up a 17-point lead, but Caleb Scrime’s layup in the last five seconds gave them a guaranteed win. As we reference in the story, the top moment after the game was father and son, coach Dave and point guard Alex Jones, got a chance to embrace between the interviews that come with winning a state title. It was not just a year for the victors, but those who had great seasons. For the second straight year, Moriah sent both their boy’s and girl’s basketball teams to the final four, with the girl’s team falling and the boy’s team returning for the third straight year to the state title game, this time falling to Buffalo East. What many people have commented on is the horde of fans that follow the Vikings to Binghamton and Troy, with some even driving back and forth between the two towns which are almost exactly two hours apart. They brought the home court with them to both places. Then there is the Northeastern Clinton

Bitcoin is a waste of Plattsburgh’s resources

To the Editor: As the city mulls a moratorium on bitcoin, so should government and the financial community. If a person came to you and said, “Here is an equation, solve it with your gaming computer and I will give you a coin.” You can’t see, touch or feel this coin, but you can store it in a virtual wallet and it’s worth money. Plus if you decide to solve the next equation, that’s just a little more difficult, you get another coin. Eventually you can convert these coins or trade them, but not at a bank. They are tendered by an almost anonymous institution with the use of your wallet.

girl’s hoops team, who made the state final four with a roster of young talent before falling to perennial powerhouse Irvington in the semifinal round, a run that should make other teams in Section VII nervous, Also, we feel a shoutout to the Ticonderoga boy’s team is in order. Over the past two years, the Sentinels have a combined record of 35-12, with all 12 of those losses coming against either Moriah (state champ and state finalist) or Lake George (state finalist and state champ) over those two years. Led by Evan Graney, they have had a great two years, showing themselves to be one of the best teams in the state. Unfortunately, they’ve had two more immediately in their path. And for the most part, fans were better this season. After what was an iff y fall season, basketball season seemed more civil then any season in recent history. There was the occasional mishap, but for the most part, we are hopeful the annual “it’s just a game” mindset is seeping into some brains. Now we’re off to spring. Good luck to all the teams and thank you, winter teams, for making this a memorable season in Section VII and II sports. — The Sun Editorial Board ■

Stefanik delays on taking a stand on issues

To the Editor: My friend Jeff, a man of science, has a passion for guns. He called me a “gun hater.” That surprised me. We had just agreed that “something has to change” and that we can not go on having our children shot at with assault rifles. We wanted to talk with one another but were mired in arguments that we had never had, with words that other people put into our mouths. I realized that my friend feels a sense of loss, as do the 90 percent of Americans that support gun change. People are arguing that “my loss is greater than yours, more justifiable than yours.”

Congress must renew funding for vital environmental programs By Rep. Elise Stefanik and Ana Paula GUEST COLUMNISTS

Despite snow blanketing the North Country in March, spring is near and many of us here in New York are preparing for the return of migratory birds, such as Black Terns, Hooded Mergansers and Sanderlings, who visit us briefly at Lake Ontario during their long and treacherous migration north from their wintering grounds in warmer climates. While our region won’t be their final destination, our wetlands — designated Important Bird Areas — are vital resting and mating grounds for migratory waterfowl and shorebirds, and breeding marsh birds. As Dr. Thomas Lovejoy once noted, “If you take care of the birds, you take care of most of the big problems in the world.” The same is true of the conservation challenges we face in our backyard. Programs like the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), and the Lake Champlain Basin Program are important tools to protect the Great Lakes, Lake Champlain, and the surrounding water systems and natural habitat, so that human and natural communities can continue to thrive together. The GLRI is an incredibly effective federal program that provides key funding to remedy the most pressing ecological problems in the Great Lakes Basin. » Letters Cont. from pg. 6 I yearn for leaders to bring us to solutions bridging the gap between gun owners’ fear of loss and children at risk. I desire leaders to move the conversation forward. Rep. Elise Stefanik has not been a leader moving the conversation forward based on her recent actions. She deflects, delays and divides. She co-sponsored deflecting bills HR4909, the STOP School Violence Act, and HR 4811, Securing Our Schools. These bills deflect from the issue of so-called assault rifles, like the semi-automatic rifles AR-15, and their woeful results of death of American children and adults. Stefanik delays. Consider her stance on various Republican led issues. She delays until her vote will not matter before voting “no.” When she votes “yes” at the last minute, she issues statements to her constituents with various excuses. Stefanik divides. She does not work to bring together the people of the North Country. She barely comes to the North Country. She “calls in.” Elise Stefanik is looking out for her own political career. We need better than that. We need a representative that can bring different views to the table and identify solutions that work. Stefanik is not that person. Lindy Ellis, Saranac Lake ■

These projects address a wide range of problems such as habitat loss, toxic pollution and runoff, invasive species, and wetland and beach degradation. Without the GLRI, we would not be able to support these critical projects, which would mean trouble for the important bird species and other wildlife that depend on our natural resources. It would also have a grave impact on local economies throughout the North Country, too. Some lawmakers in Washington are proposing a 90 percent cut in the funding that protects and restores the lakes. This would be problematic for the Great Lakes, for Lake Ontario, and for our district. In New York, the Great Lakes provide fresh drinking water and support outdoor recreation. Together, the lakes have a $2.27 billion impact on the economy and bolster almost 12,000 jobs. It’s also the foundation of our multi-million tourism industry in the New York Seaway Trail region, provides critical hydropower generation, and so much more. This area — equally vital to birds — is already experiencing degradation and loss of habitat, so an interruption in the funding that seeks to reverse and restore those places would force birds to seek refuge and breeding ground elsewhere. Similarly, the Lake Champlain Basin Program and the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) allow Congress to protect and restore our natural ecosystems and habitat, and the vitality of water in the region. Unfortunately, these programs also need our out-

Opting out of voting is a valid choice

To the Editor: In response to Mr O’Neill’s letter (“Declining to vote is irresponsible,” March 10 edition of The Sun), I take it I’m supposed to vote for someone who I don’t want in the office they are running for? I’m giving them the wrong message. Candidates study polls all the time. I like to think that with my not voting in past presidential elections, it sent a message to our current president that we wanted another option. Paul Manning, Schroon Lake ■

To the Editor: I want to congratulate the throng of Saranac Lake High School students who braved the storm for the March 14 National School Walkout. It was so inspiring to see these kids refuse to let this massacre be forgotten. They led a sobering minute of silence for each of the 17 named victims in Parkland. And thanks to our school administration for supporting this. Not all communities were so lucky.

spoken advocacy. Last year, Congress adopted the Stefanik-Welch bipartisan amendment to restore $4.4 million in federal funding for the Lake Champlain Basin Program. Audubon joins in supporting the continued flow of critical resources to help protect the lake and its watershed’s biodiversity because that’s good for birds, other wildlife, and the people who live, work, and play in this region. For these same reasons, it is also crucial to ensure the renewal of LWCF this year. LWCF enjoys broad, bipartisan support in Congress because it has protected special water and land across our state, including places like the Saratoga National Historical Park. The program has also provided grants to improve state and local parks in every county in New York, including state beaches along the shores of Lake Ontario, Plattsburgh Parks, White Face and Gore Mountains, as well as Lake George. The health of our natural resources is of vital importance to our region’s outstanding quality of life and the livelihoods of families across the North Country and all of New York. These programs help protect those resources, and do so in a fiscally-responsible way that’s good for the people of New York and good for birds. After all, where birds thrive, people prosper. ■ — Rep. Stefanik represents New York’s 21st Congressional District. Ana Paula Tavares serves as the Executive Director and Vice President of Audubon New York.

There were also a respectable number of community members present in support. If these students don’t persist, who will? We older adults can’t seem to get anything done; maybe these young adults can, if they stick together and don’t give up. The NRA has more money and propaganda than our nation’s high schoolers will ever have, but they have something the NRA doesn’t. First, the actuality of having to live in fear for their lives simply by being students in a public school in America in 2018. Second, too many American high schoolers have the passion that comes from seeing classmates shot to death, or hearing actual gunfire in their school, or smelling gunpowder, or slipping in a friend’s blood while being rushed out by a SWAT team, of having to imagine it actually happening in their school, to their friends, to themselves, of having practice shooter survival skills… in school, of all places! And of course it will happen again somewhere, because there aren’t enough politicians with enough integrity to stand up to the hyperbolic fear-mongering by the NRA. I pray that these youngsters across the nation will persevere even though the NRA politicians will do everything to discourage, obstruct, intimidate and ignore them. Please, students, the rest of us need you to bring some sanity to our out-of-control gun culture!

Satellite isn’t the answer for universal broadband

To the Editor: Do not be fooled by promises of high speed internet connections by HughesNet. Out of desperation, I have been using them for a number of years. Their service is nowhere near the high speed that is necessary for reasonable access to the internet. Something as simple as a five-minute YouTube video will start and stop as it downloads. In addition, the limited access and usage based billing makes the service expensive. I find it necessary to monitor my usage and curtail essential activity at the end of each billing cycle when the monthly allotment renews. During the TARP investments after the 2008 financial crisis, Hughes was given large subsides to connect rural areas. They were unable to see that my home qualified. They noted my Westport mailing address but were totally incapable of realizing that in spite of the Westport address, I lived in the Town of Moriah. HughesNet satellite is not the solution we need. We need true high speed internet access. At this point, that must be cable or fiber optic lines. Paul Reese, Moriah ■

North Country Ministry plans annual gala “Live, Love, Lake” fundraiser will benefit local advocacy programs

NORTH CREEK | North Country Ministry’s annual spring gala is slated for April 20 at the Fort William Henry Hotel and Conference Center in Lake George. Proceeds of the fundraiser will benefit services provided through North Country Ministry’s locations in North Creek, Warrensburg and Pottersville. The theme of the event is “Live, Love, Lake” and will celebrate the beauty of the Adirondack lakes. “The Gala is North Country Ministry’s most important fundraiser,” said board president Dr. James Morrissey. “Its success is due to the generosity of so many businesses and individuals in the community who support our work as well as to the hard work of a large committee of dedicated volunteers.” This support, he said, has made it possible for the organization to reach into Pottersville, the site of their new food pantry, and connect with those who may be currently underserved. “It also ensures that our Emergency Assistance Fund is

prepared when those facing hardship or crisis turn to us for help,” said Morrissey. The evening will include a cocktail hour and silent auction, followed by a served dinner and live auction with auctioneer Martin Seelye. Entertainment will be provided by Jonathan Newell. Reservations are required and accepted on a first-come, first served basis. Tickets are $75 per person. For reservations, contact North Country Ministry’s Warrensburg office at 518-623-2829 and ask to speak with Jordan. Alternatively, invitations and response cards may be downloaded from northcountryministry.org and used to secure reservations by mail. The live auction will include beautiful Max Yurman earrings donated by Frank Adams Jewelers, a Decorating Spaces room redesign package, getaway vacations and many other items. North Country Ministry offers a wide variety of programs and services throughout a 650-square-mile region in the southeastern Adirondacks. It provides baby clothing, diapers and car seats as well as clothing for the rest of the family and food through two pantries as well as backpack programs and other food initiatives. Two caseworkers provide advocacy and referral services, supportive counseling, and oversee emergency assistance.

The gathering place program offers lunch and hospitality, the Furniture Barn provides gently used furniture and household goods to those in need, and the Adult Living Units offer affordable efficiency apartments in North Creek. “The gala enables not only our supporters within our service area, but also those who live outside of it, to help our neighbors in the rural areas in the northern part of Warren County and beyond,” said Judy Carr, executive director. Major underwriters and sponsors for the event include: The Himoff Family, Dr. Jim and Kay Morrissey, Stafford Carr & McNally, P.C., Barton International, Community Bank, NA, Hudson Headwaters Health Network, Bill and Lisa Powers, Cronin’s Golf Resort, Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Company, Lake George RV Park, Lake George Steamboat Company, Sandi and Steve Parisi, Saratoga Spine, Trustco Bank, Edward Jones/Carl Cedrone, Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, Karl and Anne Smoczynski, The Adirondack Trust Company and an anonymous donor. Media sponsors are the Sun Community News, Regional Radio Group, and the Lake George Mirror. Fifty-five years ago – Winter 1963 SESQUICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

This year, in 1963, the Town of Warrensburg and Warren County will celebrate the 150th birthday anniversary of the date on which the town and county were founded, Feb. 12, 1813. “Warrensburgh” was named (supposedly) in honor of James Warren, who came to this locality in 1804 and opened a tavern, later a store, and eventually a potash factory. He died on April 28, 1812 when he drowned in the Hudson River near Thurman. Warren County was named for General Joseph Warren, the hero of Bunker Hill. The Warren County Board of Supervisors and the Warren County Council of Chambers of Commerce have been actively preparing an appropriate celebration of this historic occasion. (Update: Currently, on Feb. 12, 2018, we celebrated the 205th anniversary of the town and county. In 1963 Robert Muncil was president of the Warren County Council of Chambers and John Gould was the newly installed president of the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce. Many gala events were scheduled in Chester, Bolton, Warrensburg, Lake George, Stony Creek, Thurman and North Creek.)

NEW CONSERVATION BUILDING

The five-county headquarters building of the New York State Conservation Department on upper Hudson Street, Warrensburg, was dedicated at a formal ceremony on Sunday, May 19, 1963. Conservation Commissioner Harold G. Wilm and Sen. Eustis Paine were the major speakers. The building, with 7,300 square feet of usable office space, was erected at a cost of $226,236. About forty employees of the Conservation Department will make their headquarters in the building. The target date for opening the building is June 1, 1963.

PLANS FOR A NEW CHURCH

Hope of obtaining the old, unused Athol Methodist

Church and property was abandoned a few weeks ago by the congregation. Land to build a new church has been donated to Christ Community Church of Athol by Mr. Nathan Ingraham, an Athol resident. When the gentleman saw that it was not possible to obtain the old property he presented the deed to the new non-denominational church. Further donations of labor, materials and money will be gratefully received by the executive committee headed by Joseph Gedeon, president and Paul Mosher, vice-president of the church committee.

SENIOR CLASS ENTERTAINS

The Warrensburg Central School senior class will present a three act comedy on Friday, April 5, 1963 entitled “Bull in a China Shop,” by C.B. Gilford, at the school gymnasium under the direction of Mrs. Thomas Sprague. The play takes place in an ancient boarding house, where lives five old maids and their landlady. (Update: Today, 55 years later, same class, different times, different students, history once again repeats itself when the Warrensburg Central School District theatre will present “The Secret Garden” on Thursday, March 24, 2018 at the Junior-Senior High School, 103 Schroon River Rd. This presentation is a musical based on the 1911 novel written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The play premiered on Broadway in 1991 and the Warrrensburg presentation is directed by James Corriveau. Time presses on!)

WARRENSBURG HONOR ROLL

Listed on the first grade honor roll at the Warrensburg Central School in April, 1963, are Edna Latham, Marsha Morey, Brian Pryme, Peter Redfield, Tamara Ross, Barbara Whitford and John Zwart.

BUSINESS IS BOOMING

Former Warrensburg Quality Buick dealer Marcus “Mark” Bruce, at his new place of business at 624 Glen

St. in Glens Falls, where he has been since 1960, says that his stock of 1963 Buicks “are going out almost as fast as we get them!” He is expecting two more carloads at any time now. (Update: Mark Bruce started his automobile business in 1945 when he ran a Jeep agency on River Street, Warrensburg. In 1947 my husband, Merv Hadden started out selling clean used cars on River Street also. Mark and Merv were both born the same year, 1917. They went to school together. Merv used to tell me that he and Mark started out in the business world when they often traded bicycles in grade school. Mark sold new Buicks and Merv sold new Studebakers for a short time. Both sold used cars and both dealt heavily in land and real estate. The two other notable dealers in town at that time were Bill Maltbie and Karl Duell. Mark was a fine man and a very successful hard worker. After his death the town named Marcus Bruce Park, on Hudson Street, in his memory. Marcus Fourier Bruce died in 1970 and Mervin Robinson Hadden died in 1994. Mark’s wife was Cora Kenyon, who passed away in 1952, and Mark’s second wife was Edna Millington. With Edna’s zest for living, pretty blonde hair and great personality, she was the queen of the village and everyone loved her. Just a few weeks ago, out of the blue, I was surprised to get a telephone call from Florida. I was ever so pleased to hear from Edna and we reminisced about “the good old days.” For many years her name has been Edna Sullivan and she caught me up on what “all the retired Warrensburg people were doing in Florida” That is a story for me to tell in another column.) ■ —Readers are welcome to contact Adirondack Journal/ Sun correspondent Jean Hadden at jhadden1@nycap. rr.com or 623-2210.

Indian Lake taps branding consultant for logo Glens Falls company to help with creating identity

and North Hudson. “We don’t have a unified brand,” Wells said. “When talking about kiosks and signage, we need to have one clear, definitive image or direction.” Wells said he liked what Trampoline conceptualized for Newcomb. “Now is the time to really pursue branding,” he said, highlighting events like the Adirondack Challenge paired with municipal projects like Main Street revitalization program. The Adirondack Experience at Blue Mountain Lake and the Snow Warriors Snowmobile Club are also vibrant organizations, he said. Amanda Magee, a partner at Trampoline, recalled the work done for Newcomb several years ago. “With Newcomb, it started with a plan, then went to a brand, then went to signage. Newcomb had a very dedicated and driven committee with a vision of where they wanted to be, and it was effective and gratifying working

By Christopher South STA FF W RITER

INDIAN LAKE | Indian Lake is probing the idea of hiring a consulting firm to streamline the town’s branding — including the creation of a single logo. Supervisor Brian Wells told the board last week he had already spoken with the Glens Falls-based Trampoline Design about the project. The Town of Indian Lake has used a number of images for logos over the years, including an Indian head, a moose, an Adirondack chair and even an otter named “Ollie.” Indian Lake is also represented on the Five Towns logo alongside fellow members Minerva, Long Lake, Newcomb

with them,” Magee said. Indian Lake has acknowledged it doesn’t have a brand, she said, and the development of the “Five Towns-One Goal” concept and the state-sponsored redevelopment of Frontier Town at North Hudson are legitimate reasons to brand the town. The Five Towns concept includes linking the towns by trails, by which visitors could travel from one to another. Magee said the goal would be to see if the towns can get tourists to stay longer in the region. Trampoline has also worked with the High Falls Gorge, St. Lawrence County and the Wild Center. The firm has also worked with Schroon Lake, but not in terms of branding. Joining the branding effort is a local waterfront revitalization project grant for improvements at Byron Park, including signs and kiosks. A second grant aims to tackle signage work at gateway at Chain Lakes Road and Cedar River Road. ■

Eagle Scout candidate pitches project to town board Lucas Dunkley would like to construct pavilion in Pottersville By Christopher South STA FF W RITER

POTTERSVILLE | The Chester Town Board has held two meetings at the Pottersville Volunteer Fire Department, and Life Scout Lucas Dunkley has been at each to update the board on his ideas for an Eagle Scout project. Dunkley told the board he would like to construct a permanent pavilion at the Pottersville Park on Olmstedville Road across

from the Word of Life headquarters. The Eagle Scout candidate is proposing to build a 12 x 12-foot pavilion of pressure-treated wood with a crushed stone floor. Dunkley gave the board other options to consider for his project, including a large, wooden picnic table under the pavilion, which he said could be secured with a lock and chain; a road bike rack; benches for the basketball court; repainting lines on the basketball court; and putting in new security lighting - an idea that is already being discussed by residents and the town board. Dunkley said the aim of his project is to help instill a sense of pride and ownership for the park by the community. “I would like to have it done by next winter... or by the next snowfall,” he said.

“That could be the shortest projected completion time ever,” Councilman Mike Packer said. Snow was falling outside the meeting with more predicted for the night and next day. The town board passed a resolution supporting Dunkley’s project. Dunkley told the board he would when his plans are finalized, and after they have been approved by the Eagle Scout review board. Dunkley is the grandson of Chester Councilwoman Karen DuRose. ■ Lucas Dunkley wants to build a pavilion at the Pottersville Park on Olmstedville Road for his Eagle Scout project.

» Tax reform Cont. from pg. 1 “This is a top priority for our region, something that everyone I have heard from adamantly opposes,” said state Sen. Betty Little (R-Queensbury). “The push needs to continue through budget negotiations, but today’s formal rejection is an important step for us all.” Localities within the Adirondacks receive at least $70 million annually from New York state in property tax payments. For towns with vast tracts of land holdings like Minerva, Long Lake, North Hudson and Newcomb, the state share constitutes a significant chunk of their annual budgets — including about $3 million for the latter. The state Division of the Budget has proposed using payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreements instead of market value to calculate taxes on land in the Adirondack Park and the Catskills. Increases would be limited to 2 percent or the change in level of assessment, whichever is lower. The swap would open up efficiencies and relieve regular assessments by local officials, said the state agency, and payments on the state-owned land would likely increase under the new system.

BRIEFS

But local governments and green groups bitterly oppose the measure, citing concerns over reduced payments to their localities and school districts, a lack of comprehensive study and how the program might change under future administrations — all of which would lead to a larger tax burden for local taxpayers. “This is a big victory for North Country communities,” said state Assemblyman Dan Stec (R-Queensbury). Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Chateaugay) also praised the proposal’s removal. “The Assembly budget proposal is doing right by the North Country by rejecting this measure,” Jones said. Environmental groups warned the simmering threat of diminished revenue may erode the shaky alliance they have forged with local governments over the past decade, allowing them to find common ground on issues like clean water infrastructure and economic development initiatives. “Our local governments and environmental groups are strongly united in their opposition and have done a tremendous job in Albany explaining why the proposed change would be so detrimental to our North Country economy,” Little said.

An executive budget proposal that would change how state-owned land is taxed in the Adirondack Park and Catskills has been stripped from both the state Assembly and Senate one-house budget bills. “This is a big victory for North Country communities,” said state Assemblyman Dan Stec (R-Queensbury). Photo provided The Adirondack Council is buoyed by the news, but noted the proposal’s final fate ultimately lies in the hands of Gov. Andrew Cuomo. “Now we need the governor to agree and reject,” said Willie Janeway, executive director of the Adirondack Council. “Given

WARRENSBURG | Five young athletes — three boys and two girls — won third- through fifth-place medals in a recent statewide youth wrestling tournament. The competition was held March 9 through March 12 at SUNY Brockport by the New York State Wrestling Association for Youth. About 1,500 young wrestlers competed in the tournament. Earning the honors were members of the Warrensburgh Wrestling Club and the Warrensburg Central Modified Wrestling team. Tristen Hitchcock, 13, took third place in Division 8, heavyweight. Wyatt Hitchcock, 11, earned 4th place in Division 7 at 150 pounds. Hunter Rock, 7, took fifth place in Division 3 at 82 pounds. Two girls also won medals in the tournament. Jade Rumble, 9, placed third in the 55-56 pound weight class of Division G2. Chloe Rumble, 10, placed fourth in the 72-75 pound weight class, also Division G2. Both Chloe and Jade are daughters of Cody Rumble, who coaches the Warrensburgh Wrestling Club along with Anthony Fuller. Warrensburg Modified coach Lenny Baker praised all the local young wrestlers for their achievements. “It was tough, tough competition,” he said. Baker added that Chloe and Jade were “progressing well,” predicting that the Rumble sisters would be wrestling modified at Warrensburg Central in several years alongside their young male counterparts. Also representing the Warrensburg youth wrestlers at the tournament at SUNY Brockport were Landon Duers, 9, and Noah Vernon, 8. Wrestling since he was 5, Tristen Hitchcock’s win-loss record this season was 33-1 with the WCS modified team and at various tournaments. Tristen is reportedly working hard improving his skills, intending to clinch a spot on the WCS varsity team. Brian Winchell coaches the WCS modified team alongside Baker. During the 2017-18 season, members of the youth wrestling group were selected for a duals team that competed against squads from across the Capital District. On Feb. 12, they competed in a duals meet featuring 16 teams — and they placed fifth. One of the teams they beat was from Averill Park — a large, experienced program, Baker said. The Warrensburg youth wrestling program has for decades developed skills and attributes in young athletes that have lead to the success of the high school wrestling teams, as well as their other sports squads. Cody Rumble and Anthony Fuller have apparently been responsible for a recent renaissance in local youth wrestling. In the 2016-17 season, only eight children were involved. But after the duo passed out flyers and recruited young athletes, they had 47 youngsters turn out last November to start out the 2017-18 wrestling season — and 32 of them remain active in the sport. “Our young wrestlers are very dedicated,” Rumble said. For details on the program, call Rumble at (518) 538-1558. ■

» Champions Cont. from pg. 1 By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

BINGHAMTON | “What happened?” asked Lake George basketball coach as his senior point guard and son, Alex, came away from the crowd of reporters. Alex said nothing, just jogged over, unable to speak having caught sight of his coach and father, giving him a hug the two will not soon forget. Not a hug of sadness, but rather a hug of “we did it.” For the third time in six years, the Lake George Warriors claimed the Class C state title, this time with a 66-65 vengeance win over last year’s champion, Northstar Christian Academy, as Lake George was the runner up. “It’s an amazing moment, much more so as a father then as a coach,” Jones said about his son winning the title and being named to the all-tournament team. “He was a reserve as a freshman on the last championship team and did not play much (one game, had one assist). This is one he can call his own.” “It’s unreal,” Alex Jones said. “To be able to share this moment with him is awesome. Not many people get to play with their dad.” The Warriors had to fight to win the game in the fourth quarter, as they watched a 17 point lead shrink to one through the final 10 minutes of the game. However, a late inbound play found Caleb Scrime on a long outlet pass, as he put the bucket in for a 66-62 win, with a desperation three falling for Northstar to end the game at it’s final score. “You know you have all eyes on you and you know you have to make it,” Scrime, who finished with 20 points, said. I knew when it goes in we were up four and they did not have the time to come back. You hear the buzzer and you know you won. “We held on for dear life, but we held on,” Jones said of the Northstar comeback. “We found Caleb up the floor and were able to

keep the ball well enough to stay away from their attempts to foul. I just told them to react to what they were trying to do.” Jones, who scored 13 points, was named to the all tournament team. “It’s amazing to be able to contribute to two state championship teams means a lot,” he said. Meanwhile, Chris Becker, the 6’7” center

who scored 12 points in the title game and upped his scoring average from 13 per in the regular season to 20-plus per in the postseason, was named tournament MVP. “This is honestly crazy,” Becker said. “I never thought I would get where we are but it took a lot of hard work and dedication and we did it. said. “I credit his teammates around him finding him in the right spots. Chris works hard to find his position and his teammates work hard to get him the ball. Mason Flatley finished with 15 points. “It definitely feels better than last year,” he said about losing to Northstar in last year’s title game “I’m going to be super happy all night, and wake up in the morning realizing I am a state champion.” For the Warriors, the title completed an undefeated season, as Lake George, coupled with a loss by Moriah, ended the season as

team in winning it’s third title. “It’s an honor to be named with the past two teams,” Flatley said. “They were very hard working teams and we feel we worked just as hard.” “It was heartbreaking last year to come up one game short,” Scrime said. “After winning this game, it was all satisfying.”
