Old Wbg. health center razed; park to soon be developed thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG Ñ The streetscape of downtown Warrensburg passed a milestone this week as the grocery store building that housed Warrensburg Health Center from the late 1970s until six weeks ago, was demolished. The new expanded and modern edition of the health center was built this past year in front of the cement-block shopette building that had existed on the property since the early 1960s. This older structure, for decades an A&P grocery store before it housed the townÕ s original health center, was demolished to accommodate a parking lot and a new riverside park, both elements of the new health center development being undertaken by Hudson Headwaters Health Network. HHHN is the parent corporation of 16 health centers that grew out of the original two facilities launched in Warrensburg and Chestertown in the 1970s. The new park, which is to provide a new pastoral setting and unobstructed view of the Schroon River, is to be named in honor of former town supervisor Cal Engle. The first edition of the park, a small pedestrian area in the former

There will be a facilities committee meeting after the budget vote to prioritize a list of projects by need, including a new PA system, new bleachers in the gym, an upgrade for the elementary art room and a “reconditioning” of the athletic fields, according to Goralski. “In the eight years since the financial crisis, the district has had a tax levy of zero percent or lower,Ó Goralski said, which he attributes to the board’s efficient fiscal management. Ò We are very sensitive to the fact that we have to balance our programs with the resources our tax payers have,Ó he added. A public budget hearing will be held at the boardÕ s May 11 meeting, and the district budget election will be held May 19. LANGUAGE FACILITATION In addition to filling all eight positions left by retiring teachers, WCS is seeking to add two full-time teachers to their staffÑ a specially trained language facilitator and a certified teacher of the hearing impaired. Between them, these teachers will work with a group of students from kindergarten to third grade with a range of identified language disabilities or other cognitive delays. Ò Many of our underprivileged kids are coming up to kindergarten with low vocabulary skills,Ó said director of pupil personnel services Dr. Kathleen Bernhard. Elementary school principal Amy Langworthy said this school year will mark the largest one-time influx of students with language-related disabilities to enter the school system she has seen. The general procedure when it comes to students who need this special care is to either send the student to a special BOCES program or to outsource a specialist to work with the student in-house. WCS will see a minimum of four students in need of language

Warrensburg Health CenterÕ s parking area, was engulfed by the footprint of the new health center, twice as large as the old facility. Demolition of the former grocery store began April 8, and continued through this past week. As of April 15, portions of the walls remained standing as dump trucks hauled away debris. The demolition is expected to be complete in a week or two. Hudson Headwaters spokesman Howard Nelson said the new health centerÕ s parking lot is scheduled for construction in June, and the park development, a project of the town government, would follow this summer. Warrensburg Town Supervisor Kevin Geraghty said the new Cal Engle park would be a pleasant, accommodating environment. Cal Engle owned and operated a renowned department store in the mid-20th century where Warrensburg Health CenterÕ s dental services building now stands. Architectural renderings call for the new Cal Engle Park to be landscaped with bushes and trees, and to feature benches and a picnic area. Not only does the boardÕ s decision to hire the teachers as staff save the school money, but it also provides these students the added advantage of staying in their home school, Goralski said. Autistic Eagle candidate hosts Chestertown awareness fair Project part of his promotion from Life Scout rank By Ryan Edwards

ryan@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN Ñ Jacob Ferguson, a 16-year- old freshman at North Warren, is well on his way to reaching the highest rank of Boy Scouts. Unlike most of his fellow scouts, however, Ferguson is living with autism. As a part of the promotion from his current rank of Life Scout, Ferguson is required to complete a service project that impacts his community. In honor of Autism Awareness Month, Ferguson chose to forgo the typical building project and hosted an autism awareness fair at the North Warren gym instead. He spent over 300 hours preparing for the event, which he funded by selling t-shirts he designed himself, collecting bottles for a year and hosting a soup and sandwich fundraising dinner. Ò I feel left out sometimes, because I see the world a lot differently than most people,Ó he said. Ò I chose the fair to show how people with autism see the world.Ó The fair was made up of multiple information booths, demonstrations by local organizations and activities for kids. At the information booths, fairgoers were given the opportunity to learn the struggles of living with autism through pamphlets and displays made by Ferguson, including a step-by-step guide to making a sensory Ò calm down,Ó bottleÑ a water bottle filled with glitter that, when shaken, will slowly settle to the bottom, restoring order to the chaos and eliciting a similar response from an autistic child. The local fire, EMS and sheriff departments each gave demonstrations at the event and were even taught a thing or two about how to properly handle a child with autism during an emergency situation by Ferguson himself. For the kids, Ferguson provided a bounce house, ring toss, balloon animals, face painting and tattoos. FergusonÕ s mother Lacey said that Scouts has been a positive experience for her son. Ò It has had its ups and downs,Ó she said. Ò He couldnÕ t keep up physically at first, but one of the older boys took him under his wing and helped him along.Ó Five ranks and 32 merit badges later, now he is taking the younger kids under his wing, she said. Ferguson has made lasting friendships as a Scout, Lacey said, which does not come easily for her son, who has a hard time fitting in because of his struggle with the disorder. FergusonÕ s Scout Master Bill Jennings said although it is available to him through the program, Ferguson has never asked for any special treatment on his climb to the top rank.

Photo by Ryan Edwards AT RIGHT: Autistic Cub Scout Brady Hayes (center) and his brother Rhyder Hayes eagerly anticipate their balloon owl twisted up by balloon entertainer Ren-E at the Autism Awareness Fair. Ò He has done it like a normal Boy Scout, just like everyone else,Ó he said. Jennings was pleased with the turnout and execution of FergusonÕ s project. Ò IÕ ve learned quite a bit in there today,Ó he said. Community member and former Den Mother Erin Hayes also has a son with autism who is a Cub Scout. Eight year old Brady Hayes is a second grader from North Warren, and like Ferguson, has found a place to belong in Scouts. Ò It has been great for him,Ó mother Hayes said. Ò I anticipate that he will stay in Scouts for a long, long time.Ó As a part of his duty as a Scout, Brady was at the school bright and early to help set up FergusonÕ s project. Hayes said that it is important to increase awareness in such a small community where there are not many kids with special

needs. Ò It is good to say Ô theyÕ re here, theyÕ re involved kids, theyÕ re just like everyone else,Õ Ó she said. Ò I think Jacob has done a fantastic job.Ó Throughout the fair, Jacob patrolled the gym, overseeing the proceedings to personally ensure that everything went off without a hitch. And it did. Now, only a few merit badges stand in the way of Ferguson and his goal, and he is keeping his eyes on the prize. Ò Eagle is the highest rank of all Boy Scouts,Ó he said. Ò ItÕ s a symbol of respect.Ó His mother shared his pride and enthusiasm: Ò A lot of people expected him to quit in two weeks,Ó she said. Ò But here he is, going for his Eagle.Ó

Benefit gala patrons talk of N.C. Ministry’s vital mission By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com QUEENSBURY Ñ During an annual fundraiser held April 17 for North Country Ministry, a number of community leaders took time out from socializing to reflect on the mission of northern Warren CountyÕ s leading independent charitable organization. Taking a break from greeting gala participants, Ministry caseworker Rebecca Bammert talked about her day-to-day experiences in helping others. She said that with many of those she serve, both parents are working multiple jobs to survive. Ò There are a lot of working families needing help in our area that didnÕ t need help in years past,Ó she said, noting that 30 to 40 families per week, or about 280 people per month, are obtaining food from the organizationÕ s new food pantry. “So many people in our area live right on the edge financially, so when something goes wrong, theyÕ re in a terrible bind Ñ unable to properly take care of their family,Ó Bammert continued. Ò So itÕ s wonderful that so many people are willing to help out and donate Ñ and I wish they all could see the difference their generosity means to the families we assist.Ó Ministry Board President Dr. James Morrissey, for years a major benefactor of the agency, talked of the new outreach services it offers Ñ including the food pantry in Warrensburg, and a new program to provide children with bicycle helmets and promote riding safety. The food pantry, hosted in a new building beside North Country MinistryÕ s Outreach Center in Warrensburg, has helped many hundreds of families facing hard times get the nutrition they need, Morrissey said. Ò WeÕ ve been very busy Ñ the pantry was much needed in the area,Ó Morrissey said, noting that the organization was also launching a summer lunch program this year for children attending the local recreation programs. Ò Most people in the Adirondacks havenÕ t yet been uplifted by the improvements in the economy.Ó North Country Ministry Executive Director Jill Harrington de-

scribed to the gathered donors how the long, cold winter had distressed so many area families, leaving them with a heavy debt load due to the cost of heating their homes. She said that her organization had helped families thaw out frozen pipes, as well as providing emergency assistance with heating expenses. Harrington also described how a mother who had been living in her car with her teenaged son came in to the Outreach Center to request a warm coat, and they were provided with far more assistance than they expected. Ò This kind of situation is why we hold events like this,Ó she said. Ò WeÕ re here tonight to help people who are really struggling to get by.Ó Dennis Martinez, for years a Warrensburg branch manager of Glens Falls National Bank, watched dozens of people inspect and place bids on an array of items offered in the galaÕ s silent auction. “North Country Ministry is so diversified in the services they offer to many hundreds of people each month,Ó he said. Ò ItÕ s unusual that one organization touches so many lives in so many

different ways.Ó State Sen. Betty Little of Queensbury looked at the HilandÕ s banquet room, full of people poised to donate via hefty bids on everything from vacations, a diamond-studded watch to a new lawnmower Ñ or even box seats for 2015 at Saratoga Race Track. Ò This organization has done so much for so many people, its amazing Ñ and its due to their many volunteers as well as the donors,Ó she said. The live auction was conducted by the legendary Martin Seelye, who peppered the bidding process with quips. One of his chief accomplishments was coaxing a $62 bid for a Ò Dammit Doll,Ó which was taken home by Paul Crannell, a substantial donor to the Ministry. Long-time Ministry volunteer Ann Smoczynski told those attending the party that for the gala alone, 400 volunteers and donors were involved in one way or another. Ò The generosity of people in this region is absolutely amazing,Ó she said. Steve Parisi, who with his wife Sandi have been long-standing donors and volunteers, said that contributions to North Country Ministry go a long way in helping those in need, because so many volunteers are working for the agency, which keeps administrative costs remarkably low. For years, the Parisis have sent holiday gift cards to friends, specifying that a donation has been made in their friendsÕ names to the Ministry, in lieu of gifts. The theme of the gala was Ò Celebrating the Adirondacks,Ó and the furnishings as well as many of the donated auction items reflected it — including local artwork, jugs of maple syrup and traditional Adirondack crafts. The music also was indigenous to the region, as roots musician John Krebs performed with his group, which included his son Orion as well as Sara Milonovich on fiddle and Bob Assini on drums. In keeping with the galaÕ s title, volunteer Joe Vernon Ñ garbed in muck boots, a fishing vest, a flannel shirt and suspenders — welcomed people through the entrance of Hiland Country Club with a broad smile. “All we’re lacking is black flies and mosquitoes — it’s been an unusually late winter,Ó he said.

Local students among finalists chosen for MathCon in Chicago LAKE GEORGE Ñ Lake George Elementary School sixth grader Jordan Edwards and fifth grader Joe Ross were chosen from more than 45,000 applicants across 42 states to participate in MathCON, a prestigious academic competition hosted by Concept Schools in Chicago Saturday, April 25. Three upcounty athletes selected for NY All-State honors By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com ALBANY Ñ A trio of student athletes from northern Warren County were honored this week Ñ awarded as three of the leading high school basketball players in New York State. The New York State Sportswriters Association named Joel Wincowski of Lake George as the stateÕ s Class C Basketball Player of the Year, Shea Irish of Warrensburg to the New York State second team in Class D, and Nick Sapienza of North Warren to the seventh team in Class D.

Joel Wincowski takes top Class C honor

In March, the Lake George basketball team won the stateÕ s Class C Championship, a feat they first accomplished in 2013. For both years, Wincowski was the leading scorer, often launching offensive assaults when victories seemed out of reach. In the 2015 state championship final, with merely 1.6 seconds left in the game, Wincowski sank a distant three-point shot Ñ despite hands in his face Ñ that lifted Lake George to victory. With this game, Wincowski, the teamÕ s point guard, ended his high school basketball career with 2617 points, a regional record. A month earlier in the 2015 season, Wincowski became the alltime Section II leading scorer in basketball, surpassing Jimmer Fredette of Glens Falls High who became a national sensation in 2010 and 2011 while playing for Brigham Young University. Two weeks ago, Wincowski received national exposure when an article on his achievements was published in Sports Illustrated, alongside some other outstanding amateur athletes in the U.S.. Lake George Dave Jones said WincowskiÕ s success in basketball is due not only to his athletic abilities, but also his team ethic, his general understanding of the game, and his intelligence in predicting his opponentsÕ next moves and quickly executing successful responses. “Joel has a very high basketball IQ,” Jones said. “He definitely understands the game and applies the right skills in each situation, appropriate to help his team achieve success.Ó Not only does Wincowski have an ability to go on scoring tirades peppered with three-pointers, but he can drive to the basket and score while eluding two or three defenders. On defense, he has standout rebounding abilities, and has a reputation for forcing turnovers, pressuring opponents to take poor shots, and accomplishing steals. Jones added that WincowskiÕ s athletic prowess extends beyond his remarkable shooting and ball handling. “Joel sees the floor extremely well, and he excels at finding his

open teammates and making the right passes,Ó Jones continued. Ò Defensively, Joel has great anticipation about whatÕ s about to happen on the floor, for stepping into passing lanes, stealing the ball Ñ and heÕ s very active with his hands.Ó Assistant Coach Tim Kissane also noted WincowskiÕ s ability to anticipate game action. Ò Joel really has a Ô noseÕ for the basketball. He understands what other teams are trying to do to him Ñ In the 16 years IÕ ve coached for Lake George, heÕ s the smartest player on the court weÕ ve ever had.Ó Kissane also noted Wincowski’s leadership on the floor, reading the defense and then executing plays with his teammates. “Joel’s similar to a coach on the floor,” Kissane said. Despite all these athletic abilities, Jones said WincowskiÕ s premier attribute was his character Ñ his humility, his concern for others, his will to win, as well as his leadership, work ethic and positivism. Kissane also noted WincowskiÕ s character, mentioning not only his ability to inspire his team, but his humility, unusual for an outstanding athlete. Wincowski never grandstands, or boasts about his feats Ñ and he often defers credit to others, Kissane said. Ò HeÕ s committed to winning, but heÕ s not arrogant about it. You never got the feeling it was about him, it was always about the team. After he makes an incredible shot, he just goes back to work Ñ he lets his game do the talking for him,Ó Kissane said. Ò Winning class C New York Player of the Year for the second time is the fitting end to his spectacular high school career.”

Shea Irish broke records for WCS

WarrensburgÕ s Shea Irish Ñ who shattered various school basketball records this year Ñ was named a New York State Second Team All-Star. Irish broke the Warrensburg Central record Feb. 10 when he scored 53 points against Bolton, followed by a game two days later in a game against Hartford when he scored 60 points and surpassed his own record. He also set a new single-season scoring record of 585 points, surpassing the prior school record by 40 points. Warrensburg basketball coach Bob Hummel, a former college coach, said IrishÕ s success has been due to his determination and work ethic. Ò WhatÕ s separated Shea from other great athletes is how much heÕ s always worked to get better,Ó Hummell said. Ò During the offseason, he works out and executes drills regularly, as well as practicing his shooting.Ó Ò His physical work, how far he pushed his body, was re-

ally quite remarkable,Ó Hummell continued, noting that Shea worked for a year pushing himself to jump as high as possible with each shot Ñ a suggestion offered by the coach. Ò For years, he rarely missed an open gym session,Ó Hummell said. Ò HeÕ s been really committed to the game, and heÕ s Ô bought intoÕ everything weÕ ve told him to do.Ó Hummell added that he’s very athletic on the floor. Ò Shea is always moving, he uses screens well to get open and when does get the ball, he Ô squares upÕ his man and makes a decision quickly whether to make a short drive, or make a shotfake. He side-dribbles and shoots all very quickly, and the defense has a hard time guarding him.Ó In addition to his quick, productive offense, Irish excels at defense. This year, he grabbed eight to 10 rebounds per game, Hummell said. Ò Shea is very reluctant to get into foul trouble Ñ he guards without fouling, so we put him on the opposing teamÕ s best player,Ó he said. Assistant Coach Rex Reynolds, a coach with WCS for 25 years, praised IrishÕ s character and noted his leadership. “Shea is one of the five or so hardest-working athletes we’ve had in decades,Ó Reynolds said. Ò And with his upbeat personality, he has a really positive influence on his teammates. His dedication to hard work and his will to win are contagious.Ó

Sapienza led NWCS’s team to success

Nick Sapienza, the shooting sensation for North Warren Ñ which fought deep into 2015 Sectional play Ñ also received an All-State honors Ñ He was named to the New York State seventh team. Coach Jeremy Whipple said Sapienza Ñ the schoolÕ s second all-time leading scorer with more than 1450 points, had exceptional abilities on offense. Ò Nick is multi-dimensional Ñ he can drive to the basket, or shoot from outside,Ó he said. Whipple added that Sapienza was always dedicated to sharpening his skills, was unselfish with the ball, and he often deferred credit for the teamÕ s success to his teammates. Ò He was a best player, but he didnÕ t act like it,Ó Whipple said. Ò He was the ultimate team player Ñ he encouraged his teammates and always tried to get better. HeÕ s a true leader.Ó Whipple noted that SapienzaÕ s collaborative, team-oriented approach was demonstrated in how he led the team in assists. Sapienza was also the second-leading rebounder in 2015. Ò Nick has good vision to determine open players and pass the ball off,Ó Whipple said. Ò But heÕ s an even better person than a player.Ó

Burghers win two, including no-hitter against North Warren By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com GLENS FALLS Ñ Warrensburg High School senior pitcher Shea Irish, who earlier this year set school records in basketball, accomplished a near-perfect game April 17 by striking our 17 of the 22 North Warren batters stepping up to the plate. One walk was the sole blemish in the 5-1 victory, played on East Field as both teamÕ s Adirondack League opener. Irish wasnÕ t alone in achieving the win, Coach Rex Reynolds said following the game. In the second inning, Sophomore teammate Mark Monthony hit a single to the outfield, then advanced to second base on a wild pitch that struck the head of teammate Brady Rounds. Monthony scored when Mike Kareglis hit a grounder into left field, giving the Burghers a 1-0 lead. The Cougars tied up the game in the 4th inning, as their player who was walked stole second and third, then scored on a fielder’s choice. Their only baserunner was a walk to lead off the inning. He stole 2nd and 3rd, then scored on a fielders choice to 2nd base.

Rex Reynolds said that Irish accomplished his no-hitter by mixing up his on-target fastballs with a curveball that kept batters guessing. Ò Shea mixed his pitches well, and his fastball was snapping off like a firecracker,” he said, adding that Irish only allowed a fly out to right field and a ground out to second base. The Burghers added 3 runs on 4 hits in the bottom of the 5th to secure the win. At the plate, Irish added an RBI single. Marcus Perrone went 2 for 4 with a run and Alek Olden went 2 for 3 with a run and an rbi. Sophomore Joe Turner had a pivotal RBI in the 5th on a fielder’s choice. Kareglis slugged a pitch past the Cougar third baseman, bringing Monthony in for another score. Reynolds said the win was significant because North Warren is a team with considerable talent. Ò They usually play us tough and tonight was no exception,Ó he said.

Two homers propel Burghers to victory

Tuesday April 21, the Burghers continued their winning ways in a dramatic way, with Alec Olden and pitcher Jake Nemec each

hitting a three-run home run to clinch an 8-6 victory over Hartford. The win boosts the Burgher record to 2-0 in the league. Assisting in offense were Shea Irish, Colby Rounds and Cody Ewald, each hitting doubles. NemecÕ s homer occurred in the third inning, after Kareglis and Monthony hit singles. Reynolds reported the hit sailed about 375 feet over the left field fence. OldenÕ s home run came in the fourth, which was also productive for the Burghers. Ewald doubled, Kareglis reached on an error and Monthony got to first on a walk. Nemec scored Ewald by hitting a fielder’s choice, and Olden slammed the ball over the left center field fence to score three runs. In the succeeding innings, the Tanagers added to their score, but the Burgher defense held up to accomplish the win. Nemec, the starting pitcher who tallied 10 strikeouts, was relieved in the 5th inning by Shea Irish, who preserved the win. Warrensburg is 2-0 in the league and 4-2 overall. Next up for the Burghers is an away game against Hadley-Luzerne on Friday April 24 at 4:15 p.m. Reynolds said that league play this year was ultra-competitive. “Every night out we expect a dog fight,” he said.
