Assessors warn of changes School in state’s STAR tax program district budgets detailed By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
QUEENSBURY | Area assessors are warning homeowners that if they don’t take action to switch how they receive their School Tax Relief (STAR) property tax reduction, they could have their benefit reduced or eliminated altogether. Beginning this fall, homeowners who have been receiving their STAR benefit as an exemption, or reduction in their tax bill — instead of a rebate check — will lose out on the annual increase in the benefit of up to 2 percent. These homeowners must register with their local assessors to switch to the check payment to receive the annual increase. But that’s not all. Those who earn between $250,000 and $500,000 annually could have their STAR benefit eliminated entirely if they don’t sign up to receive their savings as a rebate check rather than the reduction in their tax bill — and through such inaction, they could lose up to $1,000 or far more.
‘FALLING THROUGH THE CRACKS’
Queensbury Assessor Teri Ross issued a memorandum this week on behalf of the Warren County Assessor’s Association alerting the public of the change in STAR policy, which was passed recently by the state legislature as part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s 2019-20 budget. Ross also warned that homeowners who opted to continue receiving the full tax break — through a rebate — would be forced to pay

THURMAN | A multi-talented, generous man prominent in northern Warren County was remembered by neighbors this week following his death May 2 at age 78. Residents of Thurman offered their thoughts Monday about the impact James Elliott Galusha had on life in the remote mountain town and surrounding communities. Galusha was born April 5, 1941, in Olmstedville to Leon and Estella Galusha. Jim
and his five siblings grew up in Johnsburg, attending Johnsburg Central School. On Aug. 2, 1959, Jim and Norma Jean Hastings were married. Jim died May 2, three months short of the couple’s 60th wedding anniversary. Jim and Norma Galusha raised two sons, Randy and Patrick, on the family farm on Charles Olds Road in Athol.

The study, backed by a trove of census data, was prepared by the conservation group Protect the Adirondacks. Peter Bauer, executive director of Protect the Adirondacks, said the region has its challenges — but these challenges are no worse, and in some areas less onerous, than those facing just about every nook and cranny of rural America. A key finding is that median household income during the time studied rose 7.5 percent in the park, at a time when household income in the rest of the nation and New York state was flat. Per-capita income gains were even more impressive, up 80 percent since 1970, well above the national average of 58 percent. As of the 2010 census, per capita income in the park was higher than almost 90 percent of rural America. The poverty rate in the Adirondacks, while creeping upward, is lower than it is in 83 percent of rural America. » Adk study Cont. on pg. 6

NORTH CREEK | The Adirondack Park has performed better economically than the rest of rural America since the inception of the Adirondack Park Agency, according to a new study, a finding that is at odds with the conventional wisdom that environmental regulations are bad for business. Overall, the report points to a park population that has become older and wealthier through the years, but appears to lack corresponding opportunity for younger people, many of whom have left for college and/or careers. “From 1970 to 2010, compared to rural communities elsewhere, many Adirondack communities experienced improvement

» STAR Cont. from pg. 1 She said the consequences for some homeowners would be “huge,” particularly those on limited incomes or people who pay their taxes through escrow accounts. Ross, former president of the New York State Assessors Association, voiced concerns this week that the state hasn’t yet notified taxpayers about these consequential changes.
“I see people falling through the cracks and not getting the savings they deserve,” she said.
GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS
Greg Klingler, assessor for the towns of Warrensburg and Chester, noted two changes that affect people receiving the STAR enhanced exemption and the locally administered elderly property tax exemptions — one pitfall and one favorable aspect. The good news is that the state is now track-

ing household income, which will automatically re-register homeowners receiving the Enhanced STAR property exemption, instead of these individuals having to provide proof of income each year to their local assessor. The unfortunate news is the state will not be providing income information to assessors, however, on households who have their income drop low enough to earn the local elderly low-income property tax exemption
offered by many municipalities. The state’s Basic STAR reduces the value of a home’s assessment — for tax purposes — by $30,000 if the property owners’ annual household income is below $500,000. Homeowners 65 and older whose annual household income is below $86,300 get their home value reduced by $68,700 for the purposes of taxation. The local elderly low-income exemptions vary widely between municipalities. ■
Dogs, families invited to ‘Tails & Ales’ fest in Lake George By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
LAKE GEORGE | A new event conceived to entertain dogs as well as their human companions is to debut next weekend in Lake George Village. “Tails & Ales” fest is envisioned to provide socializing, exercise and mental stimulation for dogs — while their twolegged cohorts of all ages will undoubtedly enjoy meeting other dog devotees while savoring beverages, food and live music. Tails & Ales is to be held outdoors Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19, in the event space on Canada Street just south of Adirondack Pub & Brewery. For the four-legged attendees, events include dog diving
demonstrations and open competitions — as well as chasing fast-moving flags through a half-acre obstacle course. Musical entertainment is to feature guitarist Vinnie Leddick as well as the Blue Moon Band on Saturday, and recorded music by Absolute Sound on Sunday. Police dog demonstrations are to be conducted by law enforcement officers. Fifteen vendors have signed up to be on site through the festival, many of them offering caninerelated specialty wares. Conceived as a charitable event, donations of $5 are being collected, and proceeds will go to area pet shelters and animal rescue organizations. One of the charities receiving revenue from Tails & Ales will be Queensbury’s “Woofs for Warriors” program that pairs dogs with veterans suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.
Adirondack Pub proprietor John Carr said he was pleased to team up with Lisa Giknis of the local pet store “The Dog Cabin” to sponsor the event. “We have a ton of customers that have dogs, and Tails & Ales will feature a constant rotation of dog-related events,” he said. “It will be a fun weekend for people to come out, bring dogs and kids and have a great time.” In recent years, Carr’s pub has held a variety of themed events, including their Oktoberfest, Pumpkin Chunkin’ party, Funky Ice Fest and their recent Coming Out of Hibernation Party. Giknis said that Oscar-Meyer’s famed Weinermobile will be on-site for both days as an added attraction. “It’s going to be lots of fun, rain or shine,” she said. ■

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline
Mother’s Day 2019
On behalf of the entire staff here at The Sun, we join with all the daughters and sons wishing mom By Dan Alexander a beautiful day. • PUBLISHER • Our culture has changed in so many ways over the decades, but one thing that has not, is a mother’s love and caring for her children. All too often, children don’t appreciate everything a mother has done for them until they have children of their own. It’s then they see things through a different set of eyes and begin to realize the importance of the relationship. Setting aside this special day gives us all the time to pause and reflect on the role not only your mom played to raise you, but the true value all mothers bring to the process of bringing life to the next generation and teaching them the skills needed to live a productive life. It’s somewhat ironic that current events are painting some mothers in a bad light these days after the recent college cheating scandal. While laws may have been broken, it only serves as further proof what a mother will do to ensure her children are given every opportunity in life, even if prison is the price to be paid. Life, as we know it today, is hectic and sometimes challenging with many distractions to easily cause children to be lead astray, but most moms will find the strength, courage and wisdom to overcome any obstacle when the long-term care of their child is at risk. Mothers have a unique way of coping with their children in a way fathers don’t. Their natural ability to ignore bad attitudes, overlook messy rooms, missed school assignments, slights, insults, piles of dirty laundry and other disrespectful behavior seems like a magical instinct they were blessed with at birth. I’m sure each of us can look back at what our mothers did for us and wonder what would have become of us had mom not been there. And for those who may have lost their mom at an early stage in life and didn’t have the benefits of her physically beside you during the good and bad times, I’ll bet somewhere inside you knew she was there if only in spirit. A mother’s love, as they say, conquers all. So to my mother, mother-in-law and all mothers out there today living and deceased, we say thank you from the very bottom of our hearts as we send you our deepest love on your special day. ■

Double dose
The sun was out, and the Saratoga strip offers so much more than most Essex County towns. Money, jobs and opBy Richard Redman portunity make a big difference. • COLUMNIST • I went down to pick up trees at the Saratoga Nursery, run by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). Their Trees for Tribs Program gives Trout Unlimited (TU) bare root and potted trees to plant along trout streams. Being a stream guy and Lake Champlain TU president, I had to take advantage of the offer. Walking through the tree garden, I had my choice of plants that are native to our area streams. I loaded up the pickup bed, stashed some in the back seat and had a few riding shotgun up front with me. It was good. I hooked up my trailer filled with homemade compost and headed to the Ausable, where I met five other volunteers: Len Carbonara from Indian Lake, Herb Colby from Potsdam, two of my TU fly-fishing buds; along with John Fik (TU Tri-Lakes), Myra Lawyer (DEC) and Daniel Berheide (SWCD,) we commenced to digging, planting and spreading manure. After a few hours, we completed a single swath of trees planted in an 8-foot-wide by 1,200-foot-long stretch of streambank

Democrats must find winning agenda
To the Editor: A study of the history of the Supreme Court reveals an interesting pattern. With this in mind, I have come to some conclusions. The federal government trumps states rights in matters that are expressly covered by the articles and amendments. Otherwise, states rights prevail. The U.S. Constitution and its amendments, including the 14th, talks about the rights of persons and not groups. I have concluded, reluctantly, that states must give equal treatment, including marriage, to persons of various sexual orientation. Ferguson v. DuPlessis (1897) approving Jim Crow laws has been the court’s only mortal sin. The Warren Court, by allowing Congress to override this decision, also set a bad precedent. An amendment was the proper remedy. The court is loath to allow one branch of government to bleed over

Reed, Myra, John and Daniel on the Boquet River. Photo provided between the river and the road. Highway fill along the river is shot rock riprap so we had to stay as close to the top bank and river as possible to find mediocre soil. That allowed only one row of trees. Highway maintenance mows alongside the guard rails, so giving the mower boys room to do their thing is important. Traffic was moving, so safety vests were a must. We ran two wheelbarrows filled with potted trees and compost along the road to our chosen spots. Salty, droughty and nutrient-poor soils make survival tough, but the compost will add nutrients and hold moisture. With the rains and the cool weather so far, we are off to a good start. The goal is to have future trees that
into another branch’s territory. I urge Democrats to leave their vendetta alone and find a winning agenda. They will lose before the court. Executive orders acting as law and political harassment of one branch by another should cease. Activism by inferior federal courts must be restrained. - Kenneth G. Barcomb, Altona ■
Farm labor act concerning
To the Editor: Farmworkers deserve to be treated with respect, but the Farmworker Fair Labor Practices Act concerns me. While its supporters mean well, the economic realities facing family farms will make it difficult for many farms to survive the legislation’s higher costs. According to the United State Departments of Agriculture, New York has lost about 9 percent of its farms in the past five years, triple the national average, in part because of the depressed farm economy and rising labor costs.

Trout need cool water areas they can hide out in when temps rise. The second day of our young forestry adventure involved planting trees along the Boquet in Elizabethtown. Myra, Daniel and I were back for day two, along with John Spissinger (Peru) and Reed Atkinson (Riverview) who joined us. John and Reed are both Lake Champlain TU board members. We practice what we preach! With travel time considered, along with the actual work, I figured we had 70 hours of volunteer time getting trees planted. White and red pine, spruce, gray birch, alders and swamp rose were planted; 263 potted plants in all. Two thousand feet on two rivers; a double dose of future shade is now planted. We may never see the results, but our grandkids will. One day, they can sit on the bank under one of those shade trees and say, “my grandpa or grandma planted these.” True-blue common-sense conservation can be done at a very low cost, by people who are willing to give. Both the fish and the river’s future will benefit. ■
Most New York farms already pay well above minimum wage to attract and retain quality employees. That’s in addition to providing free housing, transportation and other benefits. However, state lawmakers are looking to impose overtime on an eight-hour workday and 40-hour week, dramatically raising costs by $300 million according to Farm Credit East. Compounding this, farms outside of New York produce food more cheaply. We can’t just raise prices in a competitive marketplace to make up for the higher wages. A unique schedule is why agriculture is historically excluded from providing overtime. Some long days are required, in part because of weather and a fickle growing season. It is common sense, if farms can’t afford overtime, farmworkers will lose hours and thereby receive smaller paychecks, hurting those the bill is seeking to help. Farm Bureau is supportive of a day of rest for employees. We also support a viable farm economy. Without that, rural New York, jobs on and off the farm and access

Adirondack Flagpoles ‘one of a kind’
To the Editor: On Wednesday, April 24, John Rassmusen and I traveled to Keeseville to Danny Kaifetz’s Adirondack Flagpoles Co. I went up there as I needed to replace our flag robe and a solar light for the South Moriah Cemetery. Danny gave us the rope as well as a new solar light. I already had a new flag from the VFW. Danny Kaifetz of the Keeseville flagpole factory is one of a kind to provide those items. John served the United States Marine Corps (USMC) in the south Pacific in World War II, Danny served the USMC in Vietnam and I served in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict. May God bless America. - Bob Spring, Ticonderoga ■

‘Thurman Free Store’ proves popular
By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
ATHOL | A community event in which local residents “shopped” for quality new and gently-used items donated by neighbors was well attended — and generated enthusiasm among donors as well as those adopting the goods at no charge, event organizers said. An estimated 70 to 80 residents attended the first-ever “Thurman Free Store” held April 28 in Athol in the Thurman Town Hall, according to event founder Wini Martin. Goods donated included home furnishings, toys, sporting goods, small kitchen appliances, tools, hardware, clothing and books, she said, adding that the town hall was filled with goods and several tables were set up on the front lawn to display merchandise. “The stuff donated was beautiful, just gorgeous,” Martin said.
PROM GOWNS, CHRISTMAS TREE
Dozens of local people donated quality merchandise, she said. Among the noteworthy items were several prom gowns, a lighted 11-foot-tall Christmas tree, a telescope and a heavy-duty mechanic’s wood vice. A toddler’s rocking potty chair — complete with a built-in toilet paper stand and a magazine rack — was among the unique items to select from. Another item attracting attention was an electric lamp that could be converted for use with kerosene — useful in Thurman, where electric service outages are common.
A wide array of new and gently used merchandise was donated — and taken home by shoppers — in the recent “Thurman Free Store” event. Organizers of the well-received community occasion said they are considering establishing a permanent reuse center in town that will be open daily for such exchange of quality items. Photo provided Books available included literary classics including a Hemingway novel as well as an extensive series of books on southern cooking. Sporting goods at the “sale” featured a backpack and sleeping bag, a high-quality tent and a bicycle, Martin said. “People bringing stuff in to donate on Saturday were just as enthusiastic and thankful as the people who took stuff home on Sunday,” she said, noting she brought home several bath mats. “It was a wonderful event — there’s no way to fully describe it.”
SERENE SCENE
Unlike legendary Macy’s “bargain basement sales in New York City in which people
swarmed tables and fought over items they wanted, the scene was serene, Martin said. “When we opened at 11 a.m., there was a line of people that stretched from the town hall out to the road,” she said. “When they got into the town hall, there was no pushing or shoving — everything was orderly. The shoppers were appreciative, happy and polite.” The event was sponsored by the Thurman Station Association. Volunteers helping organize the sale include Michael Bussey, Ellen Kenny, Pauline Delcore, Nancy Hutchins, Toni Vernum, Jay Youngblood, Bill Good, Carolyn Cyr, Doris Baker, Nancy and Don Decker, Debbie Runyon, Diane Shapiro, Gary Martin, Leanna Lenhart, Paula Hubert and Rose Slemp.
Martin said that late Saturday the volunteers were talking about how few toys were donated as they were arranging goods on tables — and minutes later, a man pulled up with his pickup truck full of quality toys. A volunteer who declined to be identified said that the concept of a free shopping event was launched when three Thurmanites got together to hold an event that would bring the community together. Martin suggested the free store concept. Soon after, a group of volunteers visited several permanent “free stores,” including the Town of Chester’s staffed reuse center at their transfer station, where local residents visit to “shop” for things they need. Martin and several other volunteers said they were seeking to establish a permanent free store like Chester’s, and they were seeking a site for the venue — to be staffed by volunteers on a rotating basis. Gary Martin has pledged to donate lumber for a building for a Thurman reuse center, and people have pledged to donate their labor, Wini Martin said. In the meantime, the Thurman Free Store event is to be repeated in mid-September, she said, noting that she was impressed by the community spirit displayed by donors and shoppers Sunday. “It was a lot of fun — people had such enthusiasm,” she said, adding that leftover items from the sale are to be offered to the public at the Thurman Townwide Sale, scheduled for Friday, May 17, through Sunday, May 19. ■

One hundred years ago — May 1919 By Jean Hadden COLUMNIST
BEST VERSION OF A HARD LIFE
George Maxim, 18, who was nearly totally blinded as a young boy when it is alleged some older boys rubbed sand in his eyes while playing at school, helps his uncle Ransom Maxim drawing pulp wood. This boy, who is of a good build and beyond the average intelligence for his age, although handicapped by his sad infirmity, is of great assistance to his uncle. George attended Batavia School for the Blind and learned to operate a typewriter. Eye specialists state that permanent injury was done to his sight by the sand, and there is no hope for him to ever regain his vision. The blind boy walks behind his uncle’s wagon holding on to the rigging to guide him in the right direction while drawing pulp wood.
CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER
Pearl Marcellius was charged with manslaughter in the first degree and was brought to trial for the second time in the Saratoga County Court at Ballston Spa on Feb. 17, 1919. A special panel of 100 jurors was drawn for the trial.
» Galusha Cont. from pg. 1 Beginning in the 1960s, Jim Galusha gained notoriety as the proprietor of Toad Hill Stud Farm, where he trained, bred and boarded horses. Galusha competed in horse shows as well as rodeos. In the 1970s, Galusha served as Thurman town justice for six years, and as town supervisor for four years. He developed a maple syrup producing enterprise on his farm with his son Randy, and for decades people enjoyed tours that Galusha conducted of the operation. Decades ago, Galusha hosted the Thurman Fiddlers’ Jamboree at Toad Hill Farm, which annually attracted hundreds of musicians and enthusiasts of mountain melodies for a weekend camping out on the farm. These festivals featured square dancing and
The girl was indicted for killing John Foles at her home at Rock City Falls after he had forcefully broken into her home a second time during the same afternoon. The girl was convicted and sentenced to four years in Auburn Prison. Pearl Marcellius was at one time employed in the Warrensburgh Woolen Mill Company’s factory on Milton Avenue and she has many relatives here who are very interested in her tragic case. (Note – As I currently live at this previous mill location, it is a strange feeling to realize that this poor young girl once labored at what is now my front lawn.)
WARRENSBURGH CEMETERY EXPANDS
The 17-acre addition to the village cemetery was purchased last fall from the estate of Lemuel Woodward, running from Hudson Street, and located across from the old cemetery, to Echo Lake. It will be developed during the present season and a landscape artist will be engaged at once to plot the land and lay out the lots, walks and drives. The tract is level and free from rocks and trees and the soil is light but firm — making it perfect for cemetery purposes. The land will provide ample space for many years to come. In the old cemetery, there is but little room left. Thirty lots were sold last year and only 25 remain vacant.
rousing traditional country music. Over four decades or more, Galusha donated his services as an auctioneer at various charity auctions regionally, including the annual Smoke Eaters’ Jamboree in Warrensburg.
‘LOVED DOING THE RIGHT THING’
Sue Baker was Thurman Town Clerk when Galusha served as town supervisor. This week, Baker — now the town’s deputy town clerk — talked of Galusha’s accomplishments while in office. She said that Galusha and his town board acquired the Harris House next to the town hall, and modernized it to be used for various municipal purposes including as the town historian’s office and library over the succeeding decades. The 14 acres of land that came with the house is now Veterans’ Field, where hundreds of community events and concerts have been held.
The epidemic of influenza last winter considerably increased the natural death rate and made as unusual demand for burial plots in the cemetery. This made it necessary to develop the addition sooner than anticipated. Fred W. King will be president of the cemetery association and Charles F. Burhans will be vice-president. (Note – I am reminded of that day, back in 1959, when I went riding with my mother-in-law, Ida Hadden, and she wanted to visit the cemetery. She got out of the automobile and said to me, “Let me introduce you to all of my friends. They are all here!” For the next hour or more, I heard wonderful stories of her days and her friends who once worked with her at the shirt factory. In July of 1971, when she was 94 years old, she joined them there.)
SWEET AND SOUR NOTES
Friday, April 30, 1919, was said to be the coldest April day in 17 years. The price of whiskey has been going up so fast that there is probably less of it going down. Measles have broken out in Hooper’s Mines. (Note – Miserable measles are still here in 2019 and are currently going strong!) ■ - Readers are welcome to contact Sun correspondent Jean Hadden at jhadden1@nycap.rr.com or 518-623-2210.
Also, the town’s extensive programs for youth were started during Galusha’s administration, Baker said, adding that she enjoys looking at a photo on the wall at the town hall of Galusha smiling broadly as he’s taking children on a wagon ride around Toad Hill Farm. “He loved kids, he loved his farm, his horses, family and people,” she said. “And he loved doing the right thing.”
‘HARD WORKER’
Perky Granger of the Thurman Station Association also reflected on Galusha’s reign as the town’s chief executive, noting how he would personally help residents facing hardships and how he rallied citizens to volunteer for community projects. “Positive energy and volunteerism flourished during Jim’s tenure as supervisor,” she said.
Schroon Lake Golf Course Adirondack Golf at its Best!
Gary Martin, proprietor of Martin’s Lumber, also recalled Galusha’s traits. “Jim was a hard worker — he could build anything, weld things, break horses, you name it,” he said. “And he wasn’t afraid of hard, honest work.” Martin said Galusha would often put his wide range of talents to work for the Thurman community. “Jim was an all-around good guy,” Martin said. “He was a great equipment operator and many times he used these talents to help other people out.” Town Supervisor Cynthia Hyde also praised Galusha’s community spirit, noting he will be remembered for generations. “Jim was always available to give advice — he was a really good guy,” she said. “Everybody’s going to miss him — he was a good, positive presence in this town.” ■

Racers challenge deep, rushing rapids By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
JOHNSBURG | Minutes after pulling his canoe onshore, Matt Sullivan of Austin, Texas, stood on the east bank of the Hudson River May 5 near the Riparius bridge minutes after finishing a 8.5-mile race through the waterway’s roiling, cascading waters. He and his friend Bryan Darrow of New York City had just finished the downriver event of the legendary 62nd-annual Hudson River Whitewater Derby, a two-day North Country tradition that attracted several dozen competitors this year from across the northeast U.S. His mother Cordy Sullivan hugged Matt like she was glad he survived. “You made it,” she said. Minutes earlier Sullivan and Darrow were paddling downstream, and deep, fast-flowing water overturned their canoe, he recalled. “We made an aggressive move in the third or fourth rapids,” he said. “It was a pretty big drop there.” Nearby was his cousin Chris Schulz of Virginia, looking like he was still processing what he’d just experienced. “This is my first time in whitewater — what a trip!” he said. “I’m glad it’s over!” Schulz described his thoughts as his canoe was swept through the half-dozen stretches of raging rapids. “So I was like, blindly, ‘This is fine,’ but once we got into the rapids, I thought we were gonna die — I thought we were gone.”
Schulz was up front in the bow, and his uncle — Matt’s father, 73-year-old John Sullivan — was in the stern for the trip downriver. “My uncle was yelling instructions, but at a certain point he realized there was no teaching me — it got to the point it was a matter of survival instinct,” Schulz said. “I was terrified.” John Sullivan had competed in the Hudson River Whitewater Derby last year, as well as for several years in the mid-1990s, he said. His prior experience was likely why the SullivanSchulz canoe didn’t overturn in the race like three others did. “Our run in the 1996 provided good entertainment for people on the side of the river,” the elder Sullivan said with a chuckle. “Today it was ‘doable’ but it was serious — you had to pick the right line downstream.” Nearby, a duo of experienced whitewater guides — Linc Marsac of Indian Lake and Joe SanAntonio of North River — clanked their beer cans together to celebrate their frigid dunking minutes earlier.
The river’s water had surged over their bow, flipping the boat and throwing it into the water. While Marsac and SanAntonio fought the rushing water to get to the bank, their half-submerged, overturned canoe continued downstream. Several competitors, however, stopped charging toward the finish line and helped the duo retrieve their boat and accompanying gear. SanAntonio and Marsac jumped back into their canoe, and the two competing crews finished the final eighth-mile or so of the race. Marsac, co-owner of Square Eddy Expeditions — a whitewater enterprise based in North Creek — grinned while listening to SanAntonio explain how they ended up submerged while less-experienced canoeists stayed upright through the whitewater rapids. “We were in fourth place, going strong, when too much water surged over the bow, and Mother Nature just did what she was going to do with a lake canoe in whitewater,” SanAntonio said. Marsac laughed as he took a sip of pale ale. “We have to find something to blame for us capsizing,” he said. ■
Kayaker Mark Ahrens is nearly overwhelmed by surging whitewater as he navigates his craft through the rapids during the 62nd annual Hudson River Whitewater Derby held May 4-5. Ahrens made it to the finish line without capsizing.
Pete and Robert Roland react to a surge of whitewater threatening to capsize their canoe during the downriver race May 5 of the two-day Hudson River Whitewater Derby held last weekend. The two made it to the finish line without overturning.

Marielle Matthews steadies herself as she prepares to abandon her capsizing canoe while submerged co-pilot Devin Farkas holds onto their craft during the downriver race May 5 held during the 62nd annual Hudson River Whitewater Derby which attracted dozens of entrants.

» Adk study Cont. from pg. 1 But while the news is generally good in terms of economics, it is correspondingly ominous in terms of population. Young people are fleeing the park, and student populations in a number of school systems have plummeted, some by as much as 70 percent.

Population growth during the 40-year study period in the park (11.6 percent) was significantly lower than rural America (26 percent) and the U.S. as a whole (53 percent). At the same time, growth in the park towns exceeded New York state as a whole, and was about the same as the rural Northeast.

Further, the park lost 1 percent of its population from 2000 to 2010, at a time when population across most of America was generally on the rise. But the report shows that roughly half of rural America was losing population as well.

According to the report, “The trend of slow, inexorable population loss in rural areas across the U.S. is likely to continue for decades and is the reality for most Adirondack communities ... and (this) creates a major challenge for rural areas like the Adirondack Park.” While a cursory glance at the data might suggest that young families are picking up and leaving for jobs elsewhere, or because taxes have become unaffordable (the report noted the rising tax assessments), Bauer said 9 a closer examination shows that’s not the case. Most of those leaving are just graduating from high school, and are going off to college, the military or to see what else is awaiting them out in the world. And in one of the more puzzling aspects of the report, those young people who stay are having far fewer children. Indeed, there are few places in America where the number of children in relation to adults of child-bearing age has dropped faster over the past 40 years than in the Adirondack Park. School populations have suffered as a result. But people do move to the park, and those groups have included professionals approaching middle age, and, mainly, retirees. The park is significantly grayer than it was in 1980, when it had a median age of 32. Today the median age is almost 46. Bauer said he believes the report will cause people to rethink storylines that have been baked in to the Adirondack narrative. He said the data might also provide a blueprint for those seeking to bring more and younger people into the park through state programs and incentives. It also argues that the Forest Preserve is an asset, not a hindrance, that other rural communities with similar challenges don’t have: “What is special about the Adirondack Park is the world-class protected landscape of mountains, forests, lakes and rivers. The abundant, protected natural resources are key asset and advantage for the region and set the Adirondack Park apart from most other rural areas.” ■

Donald T. Greene NORTH CREEK | Donald T. Greene, 82, died peacefully on March 16, 2019, in North Creek, after a long illness. He was born on Jan. 17, 1937, in Aruba, Netherlands Antilles, where his father, Charles R. Greene, was an engineer at the oil refinery. His mother, Jennie Thorpe Greene, a teacher there, was from Craig, Colorado. At the age of 13, Don went to high school at Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, then attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for two years. Upon being drafted, he served in the army for two years in Germany where he was a court recorder and code clerk and competed in discus, shot put and hammer throwing. After his active service, Don completed his B.A. in economics, mathematics and government at the University of Arizona in Tucson. While in the west, he started climbing the Colorado mountains — over 14,000 feet. In the following 13 years, while working for the New York State Department of Mental Hygiene in Albany, he digitized the department’s record system. During this time, he would often camp in Colorado for a month in the summer, finally climbing 45 of the state’s 54 highest mountains. Don retired in 1976, moving with his wife and young son to their primitive cabin at the base of Crane Mountain in the Town of Johnsburg in the Adirondacks. For the next eight
years, they lived half of each year in the cabin and the other half in the neighbors’ cabin a mile down the road. As often as possible, he climbed in the 46 High Peaks, completing a dozen rounds while often guiding friends on their bushwhack climbs. Knowing the area intimately, he contributed to many sections of Barbara McMartin’s “Discover the Adirondack High Peaks” of her guidebook series. After moving into North Creek in 1984, Don volunteered his computer skills to the town supervisors, eventually working full-time in many capacities for the town officials for 10 years. At the same time, as a volunteer he was very influential in developing the town’s master, comprehensive and zoning plans, working for many years to get them approved by the town board and the APA. He also worked to have the town become the first in the state to ban jet-skis and inspired the town to create the public library. During these years under DEC’s auspices he also built a four and a half mile hiking trail, named the Schaefer Trail to honor the brothers Vince, Paul and Carl, which led to the top of Gore Mountain starting from the Ski Bowl Park. He hiked the trail as often as possible, clearing trail as he went. When conditions were poor for hiking, Don enjoyed making jigsaw puzzles with family and friends. For many years, Don headed the very active local food co-op, which had scores of members from all the surrounding towns. He was the mainstay of the Upper Hudson Musical Arts group, hiring professional classical, jazz and
dance groups regularly for a decade. He was also an important assistant to his wife in her teaching of international folk dancing in the North Creek area for about 10 years. Don was a lifelong activist in many public forums, especially in the environmental and conservation fields, being an active member of the Upper Hudson Environmental Action Committee (UHEAC) for many years. Then he was a faithful volunteer for the Residents’ Committee to Protect the Adirondacks (RCPA) starting at their formation in 1990. He was always opposed to all recreational motorized use of “forever wild” forest preserve trails, arguing against them starting in 1969. Don is survived by his wife, Evelyn Schaefer Greene; son Dave Greene and wife Melanie Crawford of Madison, Wisconsin; grandchildren Isabel and Calvin Greene and their mother, Sarah Averill of Iowa City, Iowa; a brother Charles and his wife Barbara of Santa Barbara, California; two sisters, Nolia Stephan and her husband John and Elizabeth McWilliams of Sarasota Florida; sister-in-law Monica Wiitanen and her husband Wayne of Paonia, Colorado; and many nieces, nephews and their children. Don requested that his remains be donated to Albany Medical College’s Anatomical Gift Program. Any contributions in Don’s memory to an environmental or wilderness conservation group of choice would be appropriate. There will be memorial events during the summer in the Adirondacks. ■

Burghers, Cougars capture vital wins; Lake George extends streak
Lake George athletes share some encouraging words during a softball game May 1 against Salem, which the Warriors won, 8-1. As of last week, Lake George was 6-0 in the Adirondack League. Photo by Jenn March
By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARREN COUNTY | The Warrens-
burg softball team won its first Adirondack League game of the year May 3 as it defeated Granville, 10-3. Aided by solid defense from basemen and
outfielders, Mikayla Rothermel kept Granville’s offense to a minimum as she hurled her fast, powerful pitches. Highlights for Warrensburg included Sara Langworthy hitting a double and Dianne Curtis tallying three RBIs. With the win, Warrensburg improved to 2-8 for the season. Two days earlier, Warrensburg was defeated by Fort Ann, 9-4. Dianne Curtis hit a double and scored a run, and Langworthy was 2-for-3 at the plate. Playing only one game last week, Lake George continued its winning ways by defeating key rival Salem May 1 by a score of 8-1. A group of sophomores played hard to beat the Generals, who came into the game 4-1 for the season. Four of these 10th-graders were crucial to the victory: Tyler Bergman was powerful on both defense and offense, as she tallied 14 strikeouts in her pitching performance and earned a perfect 4-for-4 at bat, hitting a double and three RBIs; Rachel Jaeger hit a double and scored two runs; sophomore Olivia Gates scored two runs; and sophomore Alli Zilm accomplished 13 putouts. Also, senior Julia Heunemann and junior Ava Pushor each hit a double.
With the win, Lake George is 6-0 in the Adirondack League and 9-1 overall. Meanwhile, North Warren had a challenging week, which ended May 4 with an 11-5 loss to Corinth. For the Cougars, multi-sport athlete Olivia Viele pitched the game. Sophomore Emma Phelps had an RBI and Mattelyn Beadnell sent four batters home with her bat. Two days earlier, the Cougars lost, 7-3, to Hartford-Fort Edward. The Forts tallied five hits to the Cougars’ three. Viele had three strikeouts over the game. Key accomplishments for the Cougars include a triple slugged by senior Sydney Gagnon, Kaitlin Kramer hitting two singles and Viele’s bat scoring a runner. The prior day, North Warren beat Argyle, 6-4, for an important league victory. Two runs by the Cougars in the fourth inning were important in the win. Aided by her teammates on defense, Viele was successful on the mound, delivering six strikeouts. Highlights include Gagnon and Kramer each hitting a double, and Jodie Bartlett hitting both a triple and a double. ■
Burghers beat former state champs; Cougars earn key win By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARREN COUNTY | Solid pitching and a string of six hits over the first two innings powered Warrensburg to a 10-3 win over Fort Ann May 1. The Burgher victory avenged a 9-8 early-season loss to the Cardinals, the powerhouse program that won the 2017 state Class D championship in baseball — and the team is loaded with seniors for 2019. Burgher pitcher Evan MacDuff struck out 11 in his third win of his season on the mound, and he didn’t walk one batter in the game. MacDuff was also productive at the plate, going 2-for-3 plus scoring three runs. Travis Passage was 2-for-4 and hit two doubles along with an RBI. Peyton Olden was 2-for-4 — one of them a double — plus he scored three runs. Bill Cameron was 3-for-4 and tallied two RBIs, while Dan Kelly was 2-for-4 and had three RBIs. North Warren also tasted success as they earned an Adirondack League baseball win May 1 by defeating Argyle, 4-2. The Cougars picked up three of their runs in the first three innings and their defense was solid through the game, as their infield and outfield backed up pitcher Drew Cormie,
Church
who garnered nine strikeouts. Another highlight of the game was Julio Espinoza batting 2-for-3. Lake George had a rough time last week, losing an Adirondack League game to Salem, 6-1, May 1, after a nonleague, 10-9 defeat April 30 by South Glens Falls, though the latter loss shouldn’t be discouraging to the Warriors, as South Glens Falls is a Class A school with more than four times the enrollment. The highlight of the game for the Warriors was Mason Flatley’s double and run. Lake George topped the Bulldogs, 14-10, in hits and had nearly half their errors, but South High won with a last-inning four-run rally. The Warriors’ hits were scattered throughout the game, and they stranded runners on base. Nick Taylor was pitching for Lake George. Highlights of the game’s offense include Michael Johnson and Cole Clark going 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs each. A day earlier, Lake George — relying on a four-run fourth inning, defeated Hartford-Fort Edward by a score of 7-6. Highlights for the Warriors were Scottie Austin’s double and three RBIs; Mason Flatley going 3-for-4 and hitting a double; Jack Mellon tallying 2-for-4 and adding an RBI; and Connor Vidnansky hitting a double. ■

Summit to address higher education
County residents have no secondary education opportunities locally
INDIAN LAKE | Representatives from Hamilton County school districts, libraries and regional institutions of higher education will gather in Indian Lake on Friday, May 17, to attend the “Hamilton County Higher Education Summit.” The event will take place at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Hall, Route 28, Indian Lake, from 10 a.m. 3 p.m. The

LONG LAKE | New York State Police responded to a report of a two-car crash on State Route 28N in the Town of Long Lake May 1. Police said an investigation revealed that a 2013 Chevrolet Impala driven by Edward Brown Jr., 67, of Utica, was traveling east on State Route 28N when it struck a 2015 Dodge Ram 350 owned by the New

summit is sponsored and coordinated by the Indian Lake Community Development Corporation (ILCDC), and the focus will be on providing greater educational opportunities for Hamilton County residents. Hamilton County does not have institutions of higher learning or satellite learning centers. School graduates seeking post-secondary education must leave the county to achieve this, frequently never to return, organizers said. Likewise, adults looking to advance their knowledge or skill set must dedicate time, effort and expense to overcome the obstacle of distance from centers of higher learning. Nancy Grosselfinger, education project director for the
ILCDC, said, “With this project, we specifically strive to create a welcoming, competent, supportive post-secondary educational environment in Hamilton County.” The summit will bring together a cross-section of local and regional stakeholders to share current educational resources and develop localized plans based on existing resources. Additional summits will work toward developing a comprehensive plan that will offer residents convenient, affordable options for advanced training and education. Hamilton County residents interested in attending the summit may RSVP by contacting Grosselfinger at grosselfinger@hotmail.com. ■

Hamilton County Coroner Matthew Miller authorized removal of the body to St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam where an autopsy was performed by Dr. Charles F. Schwartz May 3. He ruled the cause of
death as cardiac arrest due to massive multi-system trauma as a consequence of the motor vehicle crash. Miller ruled the manner of death as accidental. ■
