All school budgets OK’d Some new faces on school boards By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARREN COUNTY | Proposed 2019-20 school district budgets across northern Warren County were approved without exception Tuesday, and some newcomers were elected to local school boards. All of the budgets maintained their tax levies under the limits imposed by the state’s tax cap. Approved by voters were the following school district 2019-20 budgets and accompanying propositions. Election outcomes follow the budgets. • Warrensburg Central School District budget: Yes, 279; No, 90. total appropriations: $20,548,915 - a 5.2 percent increase calling for a tax levy of $7,641,758 - a 1.75 percent increase. ELIZABETHTOWN | As the American Legion celebrates its centennial this year, Boquet Valley Post 551 marks 91 years of service to veterans and community here.
SALUTING SERVICE
This is the first in a series of stories honoring the 100th anniversary of the American Legion. The pieces will run periodically throughout the year, and they will run in each edition of The Sun, wherever you live. When these folks were sent, they just went; it didn’t matter where they were from or where they were going. They served us all. We salute their service. ■
The Boquet Valley Post was the ninth legion to form in Essex County, and received its charter on May 5, 1928. As indicated by the post number, it was the 551st formed in New York State since summer of 1919 when the Legion began its work in every U.S. town or county, joining together to support veterans of the Great War and later changing its charter for veterans of all wars. The names of Boquet Valley Post’s founding members are neatly typed in columns on the original certificate kept framed under glass. » American Legion Cont. on pg. 7

WARRENSBURG | The Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce’s fourth-annual Golf Tournament will be held Sunday, June 2, at the Cronin’s Golf Resort in Warrensburg. Businesses and organizations are invited to participate in and sponsor the event. The golf tournament is the chamber’s second-largest fundraiser with proceeds directly benefiting the chamber in their efforts to support the greater Warrensburg area. “Our events in previous years have raised approximately $10,000,” said Suzanne Tyler, Warrensburg Chamber executive director. “With this support we have been able to fund community events like the Smokeeaters Jamboree, donate to Warrensburg Emergency Services and North Country Ministry, sponsor three Warrensburg Central school programs and create community projects like the Warrensburg Business District Map and Online community calendar.” The format for the tournament is a four-player scramble with registration beginning at 11:30 a.m. Contests include a holein-one, longest drive and closest to the pin. Prizes will be given out. A silent auction will take place along with a 50-50 raffle and additional raffles for gift baskets and door prizes. A complimentary lunch will be provided prior to the tournament and dinner and dessert will be served after. More information about the tournament, including online registration and sponsorships, can be found at warrensburgchamber.com. ■

Memorial Day and Veterans Day differ from each other Memorial Day and Veterans Day each honor the military, though the two holidays are not the same. Memorial Day, which is celebrated annually on the last Monday in May, honors the brave men and women who lost their lives while serving in the American military. Many communities host memorial ceremonies honoring their fallen soldiers on Memorial Day, ensuring such soldiers’ bravery and sacrifices are never forgotten. While many people now view Memorial Day weekend as the unofficial start of summer, the weekend should not be celebrated without also pausing to reflect on and recognize the military personnel who lost their lives in defense of freedom and the American way of life.
Veterans Day is celebrated annually on November 11 and recognizes all men and women who have served in the military. Veterans Day coincides with Remembrance Day, which is a celebrated by the Commonwealth of Nations, an association of 53 member states with connections to the British Empire. Though Veterans Day and Remembrance Day are each celebrated on November 11, the latter recognizes armed forces members who died in the line of duty, making it more similar to Memorial Day than Veterans Day. It’s not uncommon for people to recognize fallen soldiers on Veterans Day, but many use the holiday to express their appreciation to existing veterans.. ■

Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. The automotive group AAA estimates that 40 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more on Memorial Day weekend. Those estimates also projected that 34.6 million vehicles will be used to make those trips.
1. Start the weekend early.
Travelers who can’t take an extra day off or leave work early the Friday before Memorial Day may want to consider
3. Be patient and depart on Saturday morning.

Travelers who can be patient may find that waiting to depart for their destinations until Saturday can save them from dealing with much of the stress of traveling on Memorial Day weekend. The benefits of being patient may depend on where travelers live, as the Inrix study noted that Friday was the busiest day to leave Los Angeles on Memorial Day weekend, while San Diego residents tended to deal with the most traffic on Saturday. An added benefit of waiting until Saturday is the likelihood that such travelers will not return home until Tuesday, avoiding traffic on Monday, which tends to be the busiest return travel day of the weekend.

In its “State of American Vacation 2017” survey, Project: Time Off found that 662 million vacation days were unused in 2016. People traveling for Memorial Day who typically leave some vacation days on the table can start their weekends early this year. Many offices close early the Friday before Memorial Day, and workers who aren’t so lucky may just leave work early, meaning Friday afternoon traffic figures to be heavy. By leaving Thursday afternoon or evening, travelers can avoid the Friday rush to the beach.

Often referred to as “the unofficial beginning of summer,” Memorial Day and the weekend that precedes it has become synonymous with beach trips and backyard barbecues. Travelers who want to avoid traffic jams and ensure their weekends get off on the right foot can benefit from employing these three travel-savvy strategies.
taking public transportation to their beach destinations instead of driving themselves. In 2016, the U.S.-based data firm Inrix noted that a traffic-free Friday jaunt from New York City to Long Island’s East end would take 90 minutes, while the same trip would take three hours and 40 minutes on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. Travelers who can’t leave early can save themselves from the stress of holiday traffic jams by letting someone else do the navigating.

» Park Cont. from pg. 1 Straddling West Brook, the 12.5-acre park features constructed wetlands to filter out stormwater pollution as well as a 2.5-acre festival area, a skateboard plaza and a children’s playground. The May 29 Grand Opening ceremony is to include presentations by local community leaders, area legislators, state officials and representatives of environmental organizations that sponsored the park’s development. Music is to be performed by the Lake George Community Band, and a reception is to follow the ceremony. Blais told Lake George village trustees Monday that he has reached out to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office and invited him to attend. “My gut feeling is, if we are to get anything more at all, the governor will come here to the Wood Park grand opening and tell us,” he said, referring to grant funding in addition to the $7.5 million already pledged by the state. Blais noted that an administrative assistant in the governor’s office told him a potential visit to Lake George for the park dedication was added to Cuomo’s schedule. Blais noted that such appearances of state officials were announced a day or so beforehand. The engineered wetlands have proven effective at curbing pollution of Lake George, and its “Festival Commons” has in recent years hosted a full schedule of concerts, shows and various attractions from June through October, drawing many thousands of people annually to the village. The park, about 12.5 acres, was the site of the former Gaslight Village theme park — for decades a primary attraction — developed in 1959 by Charles R. Wood. The land was purchased in 2008 from the Charles R. Wood Foundation by the village and town of Lake George along with Warren

Jackson and Tryon are key organizers of Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies held annually at the Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, a hallowed ground they helped establish in Wadhams for veterans in all of Essex County. The 8.36-acre property was deeded to Boquet Valley Post No. 551 in 1989 by Elton Anson. a member of the post. It took years, but the cemetery was formally dedicated as a final resting place open to all county veterans on May 28, 2006. The site is managed by an Essex County

NEW PARK MEMORIAL
The Boquet Valley Post is continuing its work to acknowleged the service of veterans from Elizabethtown. A committee led by legionnaires George Saug and Jim Beaton now have plans to improve the small veterans’ park area in the center of town, across from the high school. “We are planning to enhance the park with a marker for all veterans from Elizabethtown. It will be a memorial dedicated to all of our veterans from all five branches of the service. We are also trying to get a military armament piece to enhance the site,” Saug told The Sun.

that the charges were “shocking.” Recently, Ackley had sought the town’s support in a campaign to expand the state’s container recycling law to include a wider range of drinks, and the town board passed a resolution advocating such a measure. He had told The Sun early this year that his business was in a financial squeeze due to the hike in the minimum wage while the per-bottle revenues hadn’t increased for many years. ■

Police said the child was 14 in the initial alleged incident in August 2018, and was 15 years old in an incident allegedly occuring one day before Ackley’s arrest. Ackley is accused of employing force in abusing the child during one of these alleged incidents, police said. The Warren County sheriff ’s office reported this week that the investigation was continuing. Following his arrest, Ackley was held in police lockup pending arraignment. Bound in handcuffs, Ackley was arraigned in Warrensburg Town Court May 15 in front of Warrensburg Town Justice Brian Winslow, who released him after he paid $5,000 cash bail. Ackley is scheduled to return to town court at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 12. Anyone with information relating to the case was asked to call the Sheriff ’s Office at 518-732-2500. Sheriff ’s investigators Douglas David, Jesse Wittenberg and Ed Affinito conducted the arrest and continue to be handling the case. Ackley owns and operates Direct Deposit Bottle Redemption Center on Main Street in Warrensburg, an enterprise he launched more than a decade ago.

Boquet Post No. 551 often plans events together with Lewis Post No. 1319. And they have several programs set for Memorial Day. “The Annual Memorial Day Parade and Service will take place in Elizabethtown on Monday, May 27th,” American Legion Adjutant Newman Tryon Tryon said. “At 9 a.m., a contingent of legionnaires will meet at the Essex County Veterans Cemetery, near Wadhams, to lower the cemetery flag to half-staff accompanied by a playing of Taps and a firing-squad salute.” The Memorial Day parade starts immediately afterward, at 10 a.m. and will proceed from Hand Avenue onto Court Street and end near the Golf course. “At the conclusion of the parade, the American Legion will conduct a Memorial Day Service in the Village Park, starting at about 10:30 a.m.,” Tryon said. ■

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline
Memorial Day in America
Memorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May honoring the men and women who By Dan Alexander died while serving in • PUBLISHER • the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades while others view it only as the beginning of summer. While a return to nice weather is always a welcomed sight, we must never forget, nor fail, to appreciate the sacrifices made by brave friends, family and perfect strangers when they put their lives on the line to defend the lives and freedoms we enjoy today. Putting themselves in harm’s way requires great valor and bravery. My grandfather served in World War I, my father in World War II and my brother-in-law during the Vietnam conflict. Three men, I respect immensely not just for their sacrifices but for the way they conducted their lives after serving the nation. For them, Memorial Day was always a special day to remember their fallen and injured comrades. I recall too, the pride they showed in their service. Grandfather was always the polished soldier who could fit in his uniform till the day he passed and proudly wore it annually in hometown Pittsburgh parades. We see those same traits in so many who’ve served our nation in a similar way. Their dedication to country, fellow humans and placing the needs of others before themselves is seared into who they were then and who they are today. Facing the enemy and realizing the heavy responsibility they carried on their shoulders provides them a perspective to value the liberty and freedoms we in so many ways take for granted in our busy lives. Without a doubt, the military profession should be the highest honored profession we have in the country. I hope we will all join together throughout the region on this Memorial Day to honor those who sacrificed everything for us, but I also ask that you give thought to those who have returned wounded or those who may not be getting the care they need financially or emotionally. Lastly, I encourage you to also give thought to the hardship placed on families who have watched their loved ones leave home to serve the nation. The pain of separation and the fear of losing that loved one must also not be forgotten. ■

Cancer Services Program will pay for screenings
To the Editor: It’s been a long winter. Happily, the roads are now cleared of ice and snow, and the temperatures are warming. The flowers are even thinking of blooming. Getting around in this nice weather is much easier, so May is a great month to get your breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screenings checked off your to-do list. If you have health insurance, your screenings will most likely be covered in full. If you do not have health insurance, the Cancer Services Program is here to help you. We pay for a Pap test, clinical breast exam, mammogram and take home kit for colorectal cancer screening for eligible individuals. If needed, follow-up testing is also covered by our program. We have been a part of this community for more than 20 years. Please call the Cancer Services Program of Northeastern New York at 518-324-7671 today, make your screening appointments and be free and clear for the rest of the year. - Sarah Granquist, Cancer Services Program of Northeastern NY, Plattsburgh ■
Bring awareness to Huntington’s this month
To the Editor: The New York State Legislature recently passed a resolution designating May as Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month in New York State. Huntington’s disease (HD) is a fatal
genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain that deteriorates a person’s physical and mental abilities during their prime working years. Every child of a parent with HD has a 50 percent chance of inheriting the faulty gene that causes HD. There is currently no cure. The symptoms of HD have been described as having ALS, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s simultaneously. We would like to invite you to join the Huntington’s Disease Society of America’s Albany chapter in turning up the volume on HD awareness this month in our region, from Kingston to Plattsburgh to Utica. The mission of HDSA is to improve the lives of everyone aff ected by HD. Our chapter focuses on providing education and support services to those in our region living with HD and their families and caregivers, advocacy on a state and local level and helping to fund groundbreaking research. This month especially, we are aiming to increase awareness of HD throughout our region. The Albany Chapter of HDSA has amazing events coming up, including the Fishy Frolic run and walk in August and attendance at the HDSA National Convention in Boston this June. Please join us in spreading the word about Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month. For more information about HD, go to #LetsTalkAboutHD or contact us at albany.hdsa.org. - Marcella Junco, president, HDSA Albany Chapter ■
Stop littering
To the Editor: It saddens me to see trash strewn along our highways. A couple of weeks ago, I was driving up the Northway from Queensbury when I saw a couch and chair in the meridian. As I drove toward Schroon Lake, a tanker threw a coffee cup out the window. Then there were miles and miles of orange bags as the workers spend their days picking up trash in an effort to keep our area beautiful. It’s a dangerous job, but do the litterbugs think of anyone other than themselves? These people may live like pigs at home and think it’s OK to litter our highways, but I wonder how they would feel if the cups, candy wrappers or even a couch and chair were thrown on their front lawn. When we first moved to Schroon Lake, my husband and I spent seven years walking through the park in Schroon Lake picking up trash. It started with a grocery bag and each year the bags got bigger and bigger until I had to use my pull cart with a large trash bag in it to clean up the area. The problem seemed to get worse, not better. We live in one of the most beautiful areas in the country but there are those who don’t appreciate it by littering. How much room does that coffee cup take on the floor of your car until you can find a trash can, folks? Is there a chance you can start to appreciate living on planet Earth by thinking before you roll that window down and toss your trash out? I would hope so! And those of you who are doing this with your kids in the car, you are teaching them that it’s OK and then it becomes a never-ending cycle. - Ellie Searles, Schroon Lake ■

The mushroom foray begins at about noon, during which guides Andy LeBlanc and Ed Braley will identify any fungi encountered as well as discuss their life cycles, habitats, and the how-to of identifying edible and medicinal mushrooms. John Dillon Park opens for the season
LONG LAKE | Located approximately 5 miles north of the Town of Long Lake, John Dillon Park offers 200 acres of Adirondack wilderness experience via 3.5 miles of trails, nine lean-tos, a single tent site, a picnic area and Grampus Lake — 255 acres available for paddling and fishing. There is a fishing dock on site as well. Especially designed for overnight campers and day-trippers with limited mobility, the park is entirely wheelchair-accessible. It is managed through a partnership between International Paper and Paul Smith’s College. John Dillon Park was conceived by and is named for retired International Paper CEO John Dillon. “The opportunity to make the wilderness experience available to people who wouldn’t have such access otherwise makes this a very special place,” said Dillon. The park will be open seven days a week starting Friday, May 31. Gates are open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is a staffed Welcome Center in the park, with electricity and modern facilities. Admission and firewood are free of charge. This year the park is offering limited travel-cost subsidies for day use and overnight camping. Contact Keith Oborne, director, at 518-265-2399 or koborne@paulsmiths.edu for more information. To make overnight reservations, visit ip-johndillonpark.org. ■

WARREN COUNTY | With a tight defense backing up pitcher Tyler Bergman, Lake George eked out a 3-2 victory May 17 over Fort Ann — until recently ranked the No. 1 Class D team in the state — to win the Adirondack League consolation game that lifted them to third place. Through 2018, Fort Ann won eight straight Section II championships. Bergman garnered 12 strikeouts — but she was also productive on offense, going 2-for-2, stealing two bases and scoring a run. Ava Pushor was credited with an RBI and a stolen base; Alli Zilm scored a run, Olivia Gates had an RBI and Rebecca Jaeger stole a base. Two stellar eighth-graders helped Whitehall win their first-ever Adirondack League title May 17 by defeating Salem, 7-1. Railroaders pitcher Madison Guild kept the Cardinals off guard, and Vinna Jensen hit a two-run homer to lead the offense. On May 16, Salem defeated Lake George, 5-4, to advance to the league finals. Their semifinal win was powered by a five-run rally in the seventh inning. Lake George had beaten them, 8-1, two weeks earlier. Warrior Rachel Jaeger tallied three hits, Olivia Gates slugged a two-run homer and Rebecca Jaeger hit a double in the suspenseful game. North Warren showed strength as they approached the end of their season this week, defeating Hartford-Fort Edward, 4-1, in an Adirondack League crossover game with Olivia Viele pitching. Highlights for the Cougars were Viele’s

Photo by Thom Randall eight strikeouts and an RBI; Lauren Monroe hitting a double; Jodi Bartlett going 2-for-3 at the plate with two singles; Katelyn Kramer 2-for-3 and hitting an RBI; and Eliza Brown hitting a single and an RBI. Viele demonstrated her abilities as she resolved two bases-loaded situations as well as curbing the Tanagers’ last-inning offensive surge. Warrensburg won two games as they approached the end of their season, defeating Granville, 11-5, May 15, and beating
Hadley-Luzerne, 9-2, a day later. Burgher pitcher Mikayla Rothermel was credited with both wins. Against Granville, Bella DeAmelia whacked a triple, scored two runs and had two RBIs — and Kaylee Olden slugged a double and two RBIs. Against Hadley Luzerne, Rothermel obtained nine strikeouts; and Megan Hughes went 2-for-4 batting, hitting a double and three RBIs. On May 13, the Burghers held up well
against Salem, which came into the game 7-2 in the league. Warrensburg catcher Bella DeAmelia performed well on defense, containing the Generals’ persistent offense. The high points for Warrensburg include Sydney Gerrain’s double, Meg Hughes’ RBI, pitcher Rothermel’s three strikeouts and DeAmelia going 2-for-3. Seedings for softball sectionals were expected to be announced May 21, and the initial games of the tournament to be played later in the week. ■
Lake George takes 4th in Adk League By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARREN COUNTY | The Adirondack League baseball drama has ended — and with the Section II tournament ongoing this week, a whole new script is now being written. Granville won the 2019 Adirondack League Championship by beating undefeated Whitehall, reigning league champions, in a 3-2 comeback cliff-hanger May 17. Granville hadn’t won a league title for the last eight years. Lake George had been defeated, 12-2, two days earlier in a semifinal game by Granville. Whitehall beat Fort Ann, 7-0, in the companion semifinal. Then on May 17, the Lake George Warriors lost, 12-8, to Fort Ann in a consolation game, and ended up no. 4 in the league. With all four of these teams evenly matched, the rankings of these teams are likely to shift after the first two rounds
of the Section II baseball tournament are held this week. In Lake George’s game against Fort Ann, Cole Clark was pitching. Highlights of the showdown between these rivals include Michael Johnson going 4-for-4 at the plate, hitting a double, an RBI and scoring three runs; Cole Clark hitting a double; and Connor Vidnansky scoring two runs. In the Warriors’ game against Granville, Riley Orr was pitching. The memorable aspect of this game was Connor Vidnansky going 3-for-3 and hitting an RBI. Michael Johnson also hit an RBI for the Warriors’ other run.
SHOWING STRENGTH, WARRENSBURG NEARS END OF SEASON
Adhering to tradition, Warrensburg demonstrated their talent as they prevailed in two of their final games of the season. On May 13, the Burghers shut out Salem, 2-0, with Evan MacDuff pitching. A senior, he allowed only two hits, struck out 10 batters and tallied no walks over seven innings,
boosting his season record to 5-1. Providing the offense were Peyton Olden and Travis Passage with one double each, MacDuff with two hits and Dan Kelly with a run. Two days later, the Burghers defeated Hartford-Fort Edward, 7-4, with five first-inning runs providing the game’s momentum. Warrensburg ended up with 11 hits to the Tanagers’ six. Burgher Peyton Olden was on the mound, beating out Peyton Ottens who came into the game with a 5-1 record. Passage and Chris Wilson hit one double each. The Burghers’ steely defense was key to the victory. On May 17, Hadley-Luzerne defeated North Warren, 5-0, with the Eagles’ senior Zack Lewandowski pitching for seven innings and allowing only one hit. Cougar Riley May hit a single for his team. A day earlier, Corinth downed North Warren, 16-6. Highlights for North Warren include one run each from Riley May and Tom Conway. ■

History of Stony Creek to be celebrated By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
STONY CREEK | An event celebrating the history of the Town of Stony Creek, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 1, is to feature a variety of activities for all ages, according to its sponsors. Titled “The Other Side of the Creek,” the event is to feature historical re-enactors, wagon rides and artisans. Demonstrations of bee-keeping, production of maple syrup, bird carving, flax spinning and blacksmithing are to be held. Booths are to feature tips on gardening with native plants, as well as the history of the settling of the town and the industry of logging locally. In addition, a vintage fire truck will be on display. Also, those attending will be introduced to the new network of hiking trails. The event coincides with the official opening
of the town historian’s office — and people will be invited to take a tour of it. The local businesses, the Stony Creek Library and an art gallery are to be welcoming visitors through the day. Books on local history will be available for sale. Stony Creek Historian Cindy Cameron is expected to be joined at the celebration by her Warren County counterpart Stan Cianfarano and the New York State Historian.■ In 2010, area residents gathered in Stony Creek Library to celebrate Norma Hastings’ 33 years as the town’s librarian. On June 1, the town library will be open along with various businesses and the new town historian’s office, as Stony Creek celebrates its history. The event is to feature food trucks, demonstrations of crafting, bee-keeping and blacksmithing as well as hiking on the town’s new network of trails. The Sun file photo

Many years ago, around 1938, the Warrensburg Central School rented rooms in this building for a short period of time to compensate for their over-abundance of students while they were building a new school. ODD FELLOW’S PLAN AHEAD
Warrensburgh Lodge, No. 488, I.O.O.F, at their regular April monthly meeting on Tuesday night, voted to purchase a building lot from Emerson S. Crandall, adjoining his downtown residence lot on Main Street, Warrensburgh, at a price of $1,000. The lodge, which was organized on March 17, 1881, does not contemplate building at once but ultimately the site will be graced by an Odd Fellows temple of imposing dimensions.
MODERN DAY HISTORY
In 1973, when everyone was looking forward to the 200th, 1813, anniversary of Warrensburg, the “Queen Village of the Adirondacks,” Isabelle Cornell, a dynamic lady, decided that it was high time that the town and the historical society had a local history museum. With the help of Supervisor Charles Hastings, she achieved her goal. The town provided rent and utilities on the first floor at the VFW to provide her with the space to achieve her dream. The museum opened in June of 1975 and only remained open during the summer. For a couple of years, I was a volunteer and guide. At one of Mrs. Cornell’s weekly guest speaker’s nights, I was pleased to become acquainted with my friend, Mark Frost who is today the editor of the Chronicle newspaper. He is, and was, a great history lover and story teller! After Mrs. Cornell died, her husband, Junius R. Cornell took over as director — and after his death, I became director for a short time. Today, Steve Parisi is museum director, and all he has achieved over the years has been amazing, truly a labor of love. The Warrensburg Museum, thanks to Steve, is a place that the town is
OLD BUILDING, LONG HISTORY
(Note – This stately old building has a long history. In 1919, the building lot was purchased from Emerson Crandall whose fine, old, white Victorian home still stands today next door, north of the building in mention on Main Street.) Mr. Crandall owned the Crandall Block, a three-story, wood-frame, business block across the street which he had built in 1893, and the stores and apartments there burned in a fierce, memorable fire on Feb. 9, 1927, well after his death in 1926. Although the land was purchased in 1919, the Odd Fellows did not build and move into their new home until 1926. The building eventually became the home of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, named Haskell Brothers Post 4821 after brothers Eldon and Ray Haskell. Eldon was killed in World War II in Italy in June of 1944 and Ray died 46 days later in France. Ray’s body re-

The Odd-Fellows moto was to “educate orphans, visit the sick, relieve the distressed and bury the dead.” To walk into the shadows of the old Odd-Fellows Hall, which was on the top floor of the building, was like walking into another world. In my bedroom are two chairs rescued from that great hall that were a gift many years ago from my late friend, Mitch Abood, the local barber. They have high backs with hand-carved dog heads on their crest and hinged seats that can be picked up to store papers in the compartment underneath. I will never forget the day that, then councilman, Dean Ackley and I were touring those rooms and opened a closet door to find a coffin with a human skeleton inside it. I knew immediately that it was real person because the teeth were badly decayed. We found out afterward that it was used for Odd Fellows ceremonies. I understand that it was stored in later years at the Alexander Funeral Home, and I was present a couple of years ago when these ancient bones were buried by the Warrensburg Historical Society in a ceremony in the front-row section of the prestigious, old side of the Warrensburg Cemetery. I heard the tale that the nameless male skeleton was that of a dead derelict found under a bridge in a city area in New York, but I do not know if this story is true. ■ - Readers are welcome to contact Sun correspondent Jean Hadden at jhadden1@nycap.rr.com or 518-623-2210.
