‘Realignment’ of LG schools’ administration to go forward

WCS teacher Io Bruce recalled as nurturing, inspiring, enthusiastic

By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

LAKE GEORGE | A realignment of Lake George Central Schools’ administration developed primarily by Superintendent of Schools Lynne Rutnik — a transformation that she says will better address the needs of students and boost curriculum coordination — is to be accomplished by this fall. The major changes call for the reassignment of administrative duties to existing school district personnel as well as establishing a new dean of students position. This realignment also calls for establishing a wellness room: a comfortable, inviting and safe place where students could go before, during and after school and de-stress, enjoy a peaceful atmosphere and re-focus, according to Rutnik. On May 7, Rutnik presented a group of about 45 interested citizens, school alumni and teachers with a 25-page “Draft Transition Plan” document at a meeting dubbed as a “Community Conversation.” The plan described how administrative duties would be refined and redistributed T~~among ~ about a dozen existing school employees. The transition, she said, embodies an effort to meet new state mandates, focus more intently on boosting student success, and create an even closer relationship with students than the school district is renowned for. The changes are also envisioned to provide greater outreach to students to nurture their social and emotional well-being.

Just a few days before she was stricken by a medical syndrome that turned out to be fatal, beloved Warrensburg High School teacher Io Bruce lit candles as she conducted the school’s senior National Honor Society induction ceremony — and WCS parent Danielle Parker captured this iconic photo of Io. WARRENSBURG | A Warrensburg High School teacher beloved by hundreds of area residents for nurturing, challenging and mentoring students through their teenage years died last week — and people of all ages shared their memories of her as they grieved. Students, parents and community members were shocked when Io Tebbutt Bruce was suddenly stricken with a ruptured brain aneurysm and hospitalized May 25. She died May 30 at Albany Medical Center with her family members at her side. Io Bruce began teaching at Warrensburg High school in 1995, and for 24 years taught U.S. history, while her husband, Matthew Bruce, whom she married in 1988, taught global studies in back-to-back classrooms. » Bruce Cont. on pg. 7

Bones are to be returned to Lake George; summer 2020 re-interment envisioned By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

Bucket by bucket, workers from the New York State Museum and volunteer archaeologists shovel and sift dirt adjacent to an apartment development off Courtland Street in Lake George. Their mission is to uncover additional bones or artifacts at the site where remains of about 15 people from the 1770s were unearthed in mid-February. Photo by Thom Randall

LAKE GEORGE | For about two weeks, a group of professional and volunteer archaeologists have been sifting through many tons of dirt excavated from a construction site in Lake George Village where 18th century human

bones were unearthed in late winter — and this subsequent dig has yielded additional human remains, a village official said this week. In early February, bones were unearthed during excavation of a foundation for the construction of one of two triplex apartment buildings near the intersection of Courtland and Mohican streets in Lake George Village. Th is discovery prompted archaeologists of the New York State Museum to conduct an archaeological excavation at the site, in which skeletal remains of about 15 or so humans believed to be from the 1770s were uncovered. Also, two buttons were found that bore markings indicating they were from clothing issued to soldiers of the First Battalion of Pennsylvania. » Bones Cont. on pg. 3

Donors, foundations praised at Charles Wood Park dedication

LAKE GEORGE | A park adjacent to Lake George that has been acclaimed for its innovative ecological functions was hailed May 29 at its grand opening ceremony — for its cultural and social benefits as well as for boosting the lake’s water quality. The philanthropists who donated toward the development of the Charles R. Wood Environmental Park and Festival Commons received prominent praise,

alongside the public officials, environmentalists and community leaders who lobbied for it to be created. The southern half of the park, developed on the site of the former Gaslight Village amusement park, includes a man-made wetlands that purifies stormwater before it reaches Lake George. The northern 12.5 acres was transformed into the Lake George Festival Commons, which hosts concerts and other events that draw thousands of people annually to Lake George. » Park Cont. on pg. 8

At the grand opening celebration of the Charles R. Wood Environmental Park and Festival Commons on May 29, Lake George Mayor Bob Blais describes the lengthy history of the park’s development, while praising the various foundations, families and philanthropists who donated to the project to make it a reality. BEFORE FALL SEMESTER

Although the realignment was presented May 7 as a proposal, Rutnik said recently that the Lake George School Board approved establishing the dean of students post — and that the rest of the changes fell within the jurisdiction of her position. The plan is to be implemented before the fall semester starts, she said. Since enrollment in the school has been declining over the past few decades and is expected to drop further — and greater administrative efficiency is thus a financial necessity — the school needs to accomplish more with reduced resources, Rutnik said. Many of the new or redefined administrative functions are special assignments to existing teachers whose qualifications and abilities fit the tasks. Such “Teachers On Special Assignments” (TOSAs) are to receive a 10 percent extra stipend for the new responsibilities. The new high school dean of students most likely be an existing Lake George staff member who would commit 40 percent of their time to student discipline, and the remaining 60 percent to teaching duties. New, additional responsibilities would be assigned to the existing K-12 coordinator of special programs, the K-12 coordinator of school support services. The existing director of instructional technology, Megan Coker, would acquire a new title — director of instructional innovation and engagement — along with new duties, including developing STEAM-related partnerships and programs, and working on teacher evaluations. One person would be hired or reassigned to a new counselor position — replacing a retiring staff member — splitting their time between the elementary school and high school, with an intensified focus on meeting the needs of students in grades five through eight. Rutnik said that students in this age range need nurturing support to assist them through these transitional years.

DOCUMENTATION

Rutnik’s slideshow and document included complex flow charts defining lines of authority, and new responsibilities for a dozen or so positions. But about half of the pages documented how the plan she presented had been researched, shared with staff members, ana-

Lake George Superintendent of Schools Lynne Rutnik describes an aspect of the pending realignment of the school’s administration to 45 or so people attending a public meeting May 7. The plan redistributes duties to existing teachers in the school as well as assigning new responsibilities to teachers who now have part-time administrative roles. Photo by Thom Randall lyzed by the school board and refined with resulting feedback through five draft versions. Such documentation was likely an outgrowth of the controversy that erupted a year ago stemming from an initial administrative realignment that included the elimination of the post of assistant high School principal held by Cody Conley. This prompted local citizens to launch a lawsuit against the school claiming that the decision-making process was illegal, and that the board had violated the state’s Open Meetings Law by conducting discussions on changing the administrative structure behind closed doors. The lawsuit also cited that the public’s input was improperly ignored. The controversy prompted 150 people to

confront the school board in a public meeting that was unprecedented in the school’s recent history. Months later, two citizens who were outspoken critics of the propriety of the realignment process were elected to the board, replacing two of the school board members who were named in the lawsuit. Several people at the May 7 meeting said they were impressed with the documentation Rutnik presented, and the amount of work invested in its preparation. Glen Bruening, a 1980 graduate of Lake George High School who had criticized the process a year ago, also noted the effort involved in the Rutnik’s presentation — but he said he had reservations about whether the process in which it was developed had

incorporated appropriate transparency. “At some point in time, all of the various stakeholders should get together and discuss their views and concerns so we can all hear each other,” he said. “What we have right now is everybody is feeding their views to one person, and all of their input is being characterized and shared by one person — that’s not a real collaborative process.” He said he wanted to hear from the school’s teachers about whether this new realignment was achievable and appropriate. “I want to hear about what the teachers have to say about this plan,” he said. “We’re only hearing from one person’s perspective.” The realignment, however, is headed for implementation, according to Rutnik. ■

» Bones Cont. from pg. 1 Town officials were told in February that the findings would qualify the site to be named to the National Register of Historic Places. Dan Barusch, director of planning for both the village and town of Lake George, said last week that the new round of sifting work at the site by state museum personnel and volunteers — as many as 30 people in total — was likely to wind down this week, and would continue only Saturdays through June. But as of this week, three towering piles of dirt remained to be inspected by the crew. Workers and supervisors at the site late last week declined comment on their findings, and an inquiry to the state museum media office was not returned.

SENT TO STATE MUSEUM

Barusch said that the remains uncovered in this latest effort are being sent to the state museum, where the findings from February are still being analyzed. According to present plans, all the remains are to be sent back to Lake George where they are to be re-buried in Fort George Battlefield Park, he added. He said that local officials are hopeful that the analysis of remains is completed by early 2020, so a re-interment ceremony could be held Memorial Day. “The exact location for re-burial isn’t known at this point, but we do have unofficial approval from DEC officials,” he said. Barusch said the developer of the site, Ruben Ellsworth, has left vacant the portion of the land where the human remains were found. Ellsworth had planned to build two triplex buildings on the property. The exterior of the one existing triplex is substantially complete, and plans for the adjacent site are yet undetermined, Barusch said. Town Supervisor Dennis Dickinson has suggested that the Town of Lake George should buy the vacant portion, develop it into a pocket park and have it designated as a historic destination. The buttons and other historical items found at the site could be displayed in a proposed visitors interpretive center that is to share a building with a new Lake George Park Commission office in Fort George Battlefield Park. The visitors’ center is to host displays of artifacts from the 1700s and earlier found in the Lake George area. Construction on the building is to start as early as this fall. ■

Celebrate hippie culture at ‘Woof Stock’ canine carnival By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

CHESTERTOWN | A two-day festival featuring a variety of activities for dogs and their human companions — imbued with an aura of the freewheeling 1960s — is returning this weekend to northern Warren County for its eighth year. Billed as “a Weekend of Peace, Paws and Music,” Woof Stock 2019 features two days of canine cavorting in Chestertown and an evening “Woodstock Revisited” concert of live music from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday beside Mill Pond in Brant Lake, where dogs will be welcome guests. The daytime events, which feature the top attractions from the past seven years and several new activities, are planned for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 8, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at the recreation field behind the Town of Chester Municipal Center on Main Street, Chestertown. Headlining Woof Stock are the Doggie Fun Zone, in which dogs chase lures through an obstacle course, and Dock Diving Dogs, featuring professional diving dogs demonstrating their talent. The latter attraction also provides an opportunity for all dogs to enjoy a jump into a pool, event organizer Cindy Mead said. “Woof Stock is like taking your dog to a canine carnival,” she said. “This weekend is all about the dogs.” New this year is a kissing booth in which humans and their dogs can memorialize their affection for one another, and a “Blessing of the Dogs by John” attraction, in which dogs can get recharged spiritually, in an outdoor chapel, to the strains of heavenly harp music. In harmony with this late-1960s vibe is Mutts & Barley — a vendor of beer for dogs, alongside about two dozen other vendors in both the daytime venue and at the Mill Pond. Also available at Woof Stock will be a dog grooming station, plus pet adoptions by Adirondack Save-A-Stray — and a reunion of dogs adopted at former Woof Stock festivals,

A dog leaps through the air prior to plunging into the water during a diving event held at a prior Woof Stock festival in Chestertown. Featuring a wide array of dog-friendly attractions and events, Woof Stock 2019 is set for Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9, in Chestertown. which is to occur at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9. The Saturday evening gathering of people and their dogs beside the Mill Pond in nearby Brant Lake hamlet features two live bands: “Headwall” and “Let’s Be Leonard” as well as food and craft beers offered by the cafe/ tavern The Hub. A light show is to accompany the music, while Loon Lake Marina provides free boat rides on Mill Pond during this annual celebration of hippie culture.

Veterans: Soldiers missing in action should not be forgotten 50th-annual POW-MIA ceremony hosts former Defense Department executive By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

LAKE GEORGE | Local citizens should urge their federal politicians to fully fund ongoing efforts to recover the remains of

soldiers killed overseas in combat, the leader of Warren County’s annual P.OW.-M.I.A. ceremony said June 2. Event emcee Gene Pierce of Warrensburg, adjutant of Warrensburg American Legion Post 446, warned that funding for locating soldiers’ remains and returning them to American soil might be in jeopardy — particularly this year, when the nation’s budget deficit is now at a historically high level. Guest speaker Lt. General Stephen Olmstead, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Drug Policy and Enforcement, told the 100 or so attending the ceremony it

is important to him personally, as a Marine, that citizens lobby the federal administration to pressure foreign governments to help in the recovery of U.S. soldiers’ remains. He said that Marines fighting in Korea knew where about 120 soldiers are buried — because they had buried their fellow Marines there in North Korean territory. Pierce noted that North Korean leaders have not cooperated with allowing recovery efforts of about 8,000 U.S. soldiers who whose remains are still there.

MIA PROGRESS

Olmstead also said that it was vital that citizens reach out to families of U.S. sol-

diers missing in action, and express their ongoing support. He said that to do so, people in the audience could search online lists of soldiers missing in action. Pierce said that a total of about 82,000 soldiers are still considered missing in action from World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam and the Gulf War. However, Pierce added, a lot of progress has occurred recently — 71 solders’ remains were recovered last year, he said — 51 fighting in World War II, 17 from the Korean War and three from Vietnam. Pierce said that the reason for so many World War II soldiers being recovered was that the Japanese were working to locate their own soldiers on various islands in the Pacific, and they were locating U.S. soldiers as well — and cooperating with U.S. authorities. Recovery efforts at Pearl Harbor also were ongoing, he said.

RAIN

A member of the Legion Riders of Chestertown’s American Legion Post 964 (right foreground) was among the many veterans bearing U.S. flags and surrounding the audience while they listened to the proceedings of the 50th-annual P.O.W.-M.I.A. remembrance ceremony held June 2 at the Lake George American Legion post hall. Photo by Megan Pierce

Sunday’s P.O.W.-M.I.A. ceremony was Warren County’s 50th-annual observance, routinely held atop Prospect Mountain. This year’s event, however, was held in the Lake George American Legion Post hall, due to rain. The flag-bearing color guards of the county’s various American Legion and V.F.W. posts — joined by members of area Legion Riders organizations and the Patriot Guard motorcycle group — lined the walls, surrounding the audience. An opening prayer was recited by Warren County American Legion chaplain Paul Sears. Jim Corriveau of Warrensburg sang the National Anthem. Pierce welcomed all those attending, particularly veterans, firefighters and other first responders, noting that the remains of many of those attempting to save lives in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks had not yet been recovered. Veterans of Glens Falls American Legion Post 233 stood in the rain and fired their rifles simultaneously, in a solemn salute to those who sacrificed their lives for the nation. Elizabeth Love, daughter of Olmstead, laid a wreath of remembrance underneath a P.O.W.-M.I.A. flag, then taps was sounded. The ceremony concluded with all attendees holding hands as Jim Corriveau led the crowd in singing “God Bless America.” ■

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

And the survey says... We’ve witnessed some remarkable changes in the media landscape over the last decade. Quoting from an article By Dan Alexander appearing in the Wall Street • PUBLISHER • Journal last week, “All the companies have struggled over the past decade with steep advertising and print readership declines. This year, both GateHouse and Gannett have had substantial rounds of layoffs, while McClatchy offered buyouts to hundreds of employees.” With that as a backdrop, we’ve been a part of two recent surveys. The first was a local survey of North Country residents looking for feedback on where they find their local news. This survey was conducted by Circulation Verification Council (CVC) of St. Louis, Missouri. The second survey was conducted on a national basis with media buyers by CVC in cooperation with Standard Rate and Data Service (SRDS). Clearly times are changing, and while we don’t have space to cover all the questions, I would like to share a few details. When it comes to the local news source of choice, 88.9 percent of responders selected The Sun followed by WPTZ at 46.3 percent and tied for third was the PressRepublican and WCAX at 33.3 percent. All other forms of local media were in the 20 percent range and below. When asked specifically about newspaper choices alone, The Sun ranked at 70 percent, while the Post Star, Press-Republican and Daily Enterprise all came in below 10 percent. Those numbers are no surprise considering the circulation advantage The Sun now holds. In Clinton County, The Sun is mailed to 28,963 homes, while the PressRepublican has 6,681 subscribers based on their June 2017 AAM Audit. In Essex County, The Sun is mailed to 19,375 homes, while Press-Republican June 2017 audit shows 1,367 subscribers, and the Post Star has 199 subscribers in Essex County according to their June 2018 AAM Audit. The Daily Enterprise is not audited, but their total circulation is listed on SRDS as approximately 3,600. In northern Warren County, The Sun is mailed to 13,223 homes. In the same circulation area, the Post Star has 1,009 subscribers according to their June 2018 audit. In the result of the national media buyers survey, 91 percent of media buyers say they have experienced placing ads in free community newspapers. When asked about trustworthiness, free community newspapers ranked the highest with 67 percent in the very trustworthy and trustworthy category, followed closely by paid, daily papers at 60 percent. The belief that free, community newspapers provide excellent value for advertisers was at 69 percent, and 93 percent of media buyers believe free newspapers fill a unique niche in the media mix. All positive signs moving forward. ■

Plattsburgh parking plans must be clearly defined

Editor’s note: This letter refers to Sarah Morris’ article, “Preliminary plans OK’d for Durkee Street,” which ran in the June 1 edition of The Sun. To the Editor: The June 1 article on OK’d plans for Durkee Street needs attention. The statement for planned “additional parking along Durkee Street” is nebulous and can be misleading in light of the large number of unaccounted for parking spaces required due to the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) project and growth. For example, a prudent number of these spaces required may be the sum of the 289 lost spaces, additional spaces required due to the DRI buildup at that site, anticipated parking increases due to normal growth in the city and an additional number of spaces required/lost during snow emergency events. This should be a published and finite number competent council has established and could easily be about 580 (289 + 130 + 100 + X). I have reviewed the city council minutes and Plattsburgh Parking Advisory Committee (PPAC) minutes to date and nowhere is a required target number indicated. Perhaps it is an unachievable goal, hidden in unpopular paid parking schemes, proposing to move some operations to Dock Street, ranting about increased tax revenue, the value of a costly $26 plus million dollar buildup that the tenants will have to pay for over a basic parking lot, etc. The PPAC minutes clearly indicate public opposition to the project and concern for lack of available spaces. On April 25, the official statement “The City is planning alternate parking, and plans will be in place before the developers break ground” read into the minutes. Note there is no number of spaces indicated and “plans” are not good enough to competently move forward with. If

Abortion laws harmful to women

Independence Party members not Independent

To the Editor: Women’s rights and healthcare are under siege in the U.S. Fortunately, in New York the passage of the Reproductive Health Act ensures that women in New York have access to a full range of reproductive healthcare services now and in the future. Passage of Roe v. Wade in 1973 upheld a woman’s right of privacy to make her own decisions about whether and when to become a parent, including the right to access safe, legal abortion services. These personal, difficult decisions made by a woman, with guidance from her health and support network, are made within the context of the woman’s faith, health, age and circumstance. Some of us remember horror stories prior to 1973 of women suffering the consequences of an illegal or self-inflicted abortion. Then, and in the future, if states are allowed to ban abortions, an unjust two-tier system of access to abortion services will be re-established. More affluent women will be able to travel to states that protect abortion rights, while low-income women seeking an abortion will have no alternative but to attempt one themselves or seek out an illegal provider. Two options posing grave risk to women. Demonizing and intimidating women who have made the very personal decision to have an abortion shows lack of respect and understanding. Six out of the nine states that passed abortion bans this year did not include an exemption for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. A man rapes a child or a woman and the victim will not have the choice to abort the fetus. Yet, in some of these states,

To the Editor: Many voters desiring no political party affi liation unintentionally enroll in the Independence Party. Seven years ago, the New York Daily News interviewed 200 Independence Party members and found that 169 thought they were independents — not affiliated with any party. Essex County has 1,764 Independence Party members. Because of confusion over the party name, it’s possible that many of them intended to have no party affi liation. They checked what appeared to be an independent block on their registration form, but actually enrolled as an Independence Party member. The Independence Party’s platform — available here: ipny.org/platform.html — is primarily oriented toward fiscal austerity, privatization of government services and campaign reform. The party has been somewhat dormant recently but it has been active in the past, cross-endorsing other party’s candidates and attracting celebrity candidates. If you’re an unintentional Independence Party member, its very easy to change to Independent (no party affiliation) — or enroll in another party. Registration forms can be obtained at many post offices or downloaded here: co.essex.ny.us/downloads/VoterRegistrationForm.pdf - Frank Pagano, chair of the Town of Jay Democratic Committee ■

Turning back the pages

One hundred years ago – June 1919 By Jean Hadden COLUMNIST

SPRING HAS SPRUNG

The grass has risen… The music furnished by the Warrensburgh band for the Memorial Day exercises was excellent and was the subject of much favorite comment. The band plans many open-air concerts for this coming summer. The mercury so far this month has been steadily climbing toward the 100 degree mark and has almost reached it at this time. The heat wave covers a large territory and the weather bureau does not promise early relief. (Note – It is indeed strange that weather at this time in 1919 was nothing too unusual at 100 degrees and in 2019, a time of so-called “global warming,” I got up on the morning of June 1 and had to turn the furnace on.)

SCHROON RIVER HAZARD

A large number of logs are hung up in the Schroon River between the saw mill and the Woolen Mill dams (near the bridge at Milton Avenue) and it is understood that they are to be left there until next year. Residents in that part of the town are protesting earnestly against this course as the logs catch a great

Since her hospitalization, there have been thousands of Facebook postings, not only expressing grief and sorrow, but tributes to Io Bruce, describing how she had a profound positive influence on each of their lives. At the high school, many dozens of floral bouquets, potted plants and cards of sympathy were laid on the front lawn following her hospitalization. After a week or so, these bouquets and plants were collected and donated to the Countryside Adult Home. In the school cafeteria, a 20-foot-long poster honoring Io Bruce was affi xed to the wall, and hundreds of students left messages on the banner to the Bruce family. Similar

mass of refuse and sewage which is a grave menace to public health, especially during this heated period. The owners should be compelled to move the logs now while there is sufficient water to do it. (Note – Back in those times, toilets in buildings along River Street, lining the river bank, emptied into the river. It was not until Maynard Baker became supervisor here in Warrensburg that anything was done to clean up the river locally.)

ONLY A YEAR AGO

A big part of the Hamlet of Pottersville, destroyed by fire on April 7, 1918, is being rebuilt, and the plucky people are realizing their hope was never abandoned during the dark days of discouragement. The little hamlet will soon again become a live-wire community. Nine buildings were destroyed by the big fire which swept the main street on a Sunday evening starting at 5 o’clock from a defective chimney in the store building of H.P. Brace. Pottersville citizens have imbibed the true spirit of reconstruction and look forward to old-time prosperity.

smaller posters were placed on the classroom doors of both Io and Matt Bruce. For two weeks, hundreds of students wore “W Strong” blue-and-gold T-shirts to show support for the Bruce family. On June 4, nearly every teacher in the high school wore the W Strong shirts in a tribute to Io.

‘INDELIBLE MARK’

Calling hours were scheduled June 4 at Alexander Funeral Home, and assistance from the Warren County Sheriff ’s office was requested in order to manage the traffic backup that was expected. In the wake of the outpouring of sympathies, those close to Io Bruce organized a community celebration of life in her honor to be held the evening of June 5 on the Warrensburg Lum berCompany, Inc. Hundreds were expected Recreation Field. to participate in this candlelight tribute. Warrensburg High School Principal Doug Duell offered his thoughts Monday about the influence that Io Bruce had on the school community. “She was one of the most positive and energetic people I’ve ever been around,” Duell said. “Io Bruce genuinely cared about her students — she has left an indelible mark on their lives.” Having acquired a love of travel in her youth, Io — routinely accompanied by Matt Bruce — took groups of students to Europe and elsewhere overseas to expose them to different cultures. Duell said these trips profoundly enriched the lives of area youth. “For our kids to get out and see other parts of the world and experience other cultures was fantastic,” he said. One of those “kids” — an expression that

Turning into Elm Street, they reached a point near the news office (back of today’s Floyd Bennett bandstand) and veering from the road, to the right, ran head-on into a big telephone pole, passing one on each side. There was a tremendous crash when the wagon struck the pole, and the horses broke loose and were thrown in the road. Scrambling quickly to their feet, they stood quietly until they were secured by Ben C. Gurney. Neither of the animals were injured, and the wagon was not greatly damaged. It was extremely fortunate that they were stopped as they were and also that they did not reach Main Street, otherwise great damage might have resulted with perhaps loss of life.

HUMOR IN 1919

Io used for her students — was 2015 Warrensburg (WCS) graduate Allison Lanfear, who took four trips led by Io to Washington, D.C., plus two trips to various countries in Europe. Last week, Lanfear expressed her thoughts on Io’s Facebook page. “Thank you for all of the incredible memories which I will cherish and share for the rest of my life. Thank you for your endless advice, support and encouragement...changing the lives of myself and countless others. Thank you for being so genuine, thoughtful and sincere...for always giving your students an overflow of unconditional love.” WCS alumnus Kayla Sweet posted on Facebook that she and her mother hiked Hackensack in Io Bruce’s honor after they heard of her hospitalization. Io had herself hiked the peak just days before she was stricken. “You are a second mother to me. The epitome of Grace. A true Angel....You, Io, are the one who watched over everyone in our tiny town,” Sweet said. Student Cara Squires also posted on Facebook: “Not only were you the most motivated teacher I’ve ever met — you were a friend that anyone could confide in. You were always there for every one of us, no matter what. You are truly an inspiration to many.” WCS alumnus Olivia McNeill posted this tribute: “It was such an honor to have been graced by your beautiful soul. I have grown so much from the lessons you taught me. Thank you for being a light in my life during high school; thank you for your radiating positivity and your limitless confidence.” Several graduates said they would never had either enrolled in college, or succeeded

in their higher educations, had it not been for Io Bruce’s continuing encouragement. WCS graudate Ryan McNeill said he felt deeply sorry that future WCS students wouldn’t have the enriching experience that Io gave all her pupils. “I would not be half the student I am today without her,” he said on a Facebook post.

‘REMARKABLE ROLE MODEL’

Danielle Parker, a parent of WCS students, described Io as a “remarkable role model,” noting Io’s pride in her students and their accomplishments, how she listened to them — and the guidance she provided for so many. “You’ve forever had an impact on me,” Parker wrote on Facebook. The school district administration posted this message online: “Mrs. Bruce’s dedication to her students and the WCS District was an inspiration to everyone. In another act of selflessness, Mrs. Bruce chose to donate her organs giving life to someone in need.” The message also said that counseling for both students and staff members was being provided. Warrensburg Superintendent of Schools John Goralski issued a statement praising Io’s service. “Her passion for the Warrensburg community and the students she served was an inspiration to many,” he said. WCS student Bryce Vaisey offered his thoughts on Facebook about Io’s influence. He said that Io “inspired hope and courage in everyone to follow their dreams,” noting that Io was “amazing” and would be “remembered for generations.” ■

Lake George to host international adventure travel conference AdventureELEVATE to bring adventure travel professionals

LAKE GEORGE | For the first time, the annual Adventure Travel Trade Association’s (ATTA) AdventureELEVATE conference will be held in New York state. The Fort William Henry Hotel and Conference Center in Lake George will serve as the headquarters for the three-day event that will be held June 10-12. AdventureELEVATE weaves together interactive workshops, inspiring plenary discussions and networking opportunities with plenty of time for fresh air and adventurous exploration in and around Lake George, organizers said. Delegates for AdventureELEVATE may attend the “Day of Adventure” June 10. Each delegate will have the option to experience outdoor adventure opportunities in the Lake George area and surrounding Adirondack Park through a

Tour operators, publishers, traditional media, influencers, bloggers and more will be in attendance. The welcome ceremony will be held June 11 at 9 a.m. in the Lake George Room at Fort William Henry Conference Center. Lake George Chamber of Commerce CEO Gina Mintzer hailed Charles R. Wood for first creating Gaslight Village, then supporting the land’s transformation into a park that benefits the entire county. “Fortunately, the legacy and vision of Charlie Wood lives on, as we all utilize this space to tell the story of Lake George and educate our children, neighbors and guests about the value of our natural surroundings — and that sustainability is a priority right here,” she said. “We’re so fortunate to live, work and play in a destination that ‘walks the talk’ of eco-friendly initiatives that benefit us all.” Lake George Land Conservancy director Jamie Brown expressed similar thoughts. “Today, we celebrate a project that is very diverse — it brings together land protection, stormwater purification, and somehow, the Charlie Daniels Band as well!”

‘PAVED THE WAY’

Brown also noted that the collaborative effort between local governments and environmental groups to develop the park “paved the way” for such later initiatives as acquiring the 1,400-acre Berry Pond tract that hosts the headwaters of West Brook, a major tributary of Lake George that runs through the Wood Park. Lake George Association CEO Walt Lender praised the philanthropists that made generous contributions. “Our board struggled with the stretch of the investment we had to make here, but our donors and the foundations we work with came out in solid support,” he said. “I can’t think of a better legacy to leave for the next generation than this beautiful park.” Both Lake George Town Supervisor Dennis Dickinson and Lake George Village Mayor Bob Blais praised the Charles Wood Foundation for their various donations toward the park and its amenities. “They were always there when they were needed — generous and giving,” Dickinson said, before introducing Blais, praising the mayor’s leadership and commitment toward the park’s development. by Communion. Charlene Wood of the Charles R. Wood Foundation recounted the history of her father’s amusement parks, Storytown USA and Gaslight Village. She noted that the foundation’s donation toward the park re-development grew out of their “focus on giving back to the communities that helped my dad acquire his success.” Heather Ward, board chairman of the Wright Family Foundation — which gave $500,000 to develop a naturalistic children’s adventure playground at the park, praised the venue’s development, calling it “the most important environmental conservation effort Lake George has seen to date.” She added that the playground, in the way it incorporates nature and human activity, mirrors the joint effort of donors and project proponents in creating the park. “Such collaborations between nature and humans show we can co-exist in a sustainable way,” she said. Eric Siy, executive director of The Fund for Lake George, also praised the collaboration. “We will be there each step of the way to continue these partnerships on every major priority that is now impacting Lake George,” he said. Jeff Killeen, chairman of The Fund, and whose family made a major donation to the project, credited former chairman Don Rice and former LGA chairman Victor Hershaft for their dedication to the project. Event emcee Walt Adams, a member of the Lake George Village Planning Board, said all those involved in the project — in any measure — deserved credit. “One of the greatest things we can do as an individual is to have a commitment to our community — to help create a better quality of life,” he said. ■

The meal will feature a smoked barbecue buffet and rodeo show. This event is from 6:30-10:45 p.m. Members of the Lake George Regional CVB said they believe the area will continue to see benefits from the conference well after it ends. “Typically, we find that the effects of hosting AdventureELEVATE last long after the event is over as coverage from social media, online, and traditional articles starts to appear in the outdoor and travel sector. We have also found that AdventureELEVATE has acted as a catalyst to bring the regional adventure community together to continue the momentum from the event,” ATTA Regional Director of North America Russell Walters said. Warriors’ will-to-win prevails in comeback semifinal victory Last-inning rally decides the game By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT

MOREAU | The Lake George softball team thrilled fans when it executed a lastinning come-from-behind sectional tournament victory over Greenwich that was secured with a last-play hit. The Section II Class C semifinal game was played in Moreau Recreational Park. Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Lake George sophomore Tyler Bergman slugged a two-run home run that changed the team’s trajectory. In the top of the seventh, however, Greenwich sophomore Lily McCauliffe

of Greenwich hit the first pitch to advance the Witches’ lead to 4-2. Lake George’s eight-year varsity softball coach Kyle Manny advised his kids as the game’s end approached. “Every championship team has a big story-line game, a come-from-behind victory,” Manny said Monday, recalling the words he shared with his players during the game. “Play it out in your mind, believe in it and go do it!” Then in the last half of the final inning, the Warriors’ offense started to mesh. Junior Casey Lynn Burbo extended a hit into a double, sophomore Olivia Gates smacked a single, her classmate Rachel Jaeger hit a grounder that scored a run, and Bergman got a base hit that scored Gates, and senior pitcher Rebecca Jaeger hit a double. Then, with two outs facing the Warriors in the last half of the final inning, Ava Pushor, who had struggled offensively earlier in the

She whacked a single, and Rebecca Jaeger ran the second half of the diamond to score the winning run. “Our team has bought into the idea that as long as we have a swing left, they are never out of the game,” Manny said, noting he was proud of their accomplishments this year. The victory set up a championship showdown versus Chatham June 4 at Moreau Recreational Park. “Our players enjoy working hard and in practice; they understand the intricacies of softball as well as playing in the game — and having fun,” Manny said. “This was one of most exciting games I’ve ever been a part of.” ■ Lake George players celebrate their Section II Class C semifinal comeback victory over Greenwich on May 30 that was decided on the game’s last pitch with two outs on the board. LAKE GEORGE | A Buskirk man was arrested by Warren County Sheriff’s Deputies for allegedly driving while intoxicated. Deputies conducted a vehicle stop on state Route 9 in the Town of Lake George May 26. Officers said they had previously spoken with the operator, Ronnie L. Hurt, 26, and attempted to offer him assistance finding a ride home due to his intoxication but he declined. A short time later, Hurt was allegedly witnessed operating the vehicle southbound on state Route 9 and making unsafe lane changes. Hurt provided a breath sample that allegedly yielded a 0.11 percent blood alcohol content. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and moving from lane unsafely. He was processed and released to appear in the Lake George Court on a later date. ■

Museum to open for the season with new exhibits

BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE | Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake opened for the season recently featuring two new temporary exhibits: “Curious Creatures: Taxidermy in the Adirondacks” and “Private Views: Collecting in the Adirondacks.” “Curious Creatures” takes a look at antique and modern taxidermy mounts from private collections as well as the museum’s own holdings for a broad representation of this unique art form and its relationship to the “Adirondack style.” Some of the more unusual specimens are from taxidermist Walter Potter (1835-1918), in which the animals are posed in more typically human activities. “Private Views” focuses on 19th-century Adirondack landscape paintings. How the individual collector’s personality is revealed through their collection is just one of the themes explored in this exhibit. The museum is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission rates vary, so visit the museum’s website at adkx.org or call 518-352-7311 for more information. ■

WARRENSBURG | Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) has co-sponsored Congressman Josh Gottheimer’s (D-NJ)

The act requires real-time background checks on school bus drivers. When a driver receives any sort of driving infraction aside from a parking ticket, the school and school bus company will receive a notification regarding the infraction from the Department of Transportation within 24 hours. Stefanik is also a co-sponsor of the Miranda’s Law and the Secure Every Child Under the Right Equipment Standards (SECURES) Act, which requires the implementation of seat belts on all school buses and makes three-point lapand-shoulder seat belts the national standard. Leading up to Memorial Day, Stefanik helped the House pass seven pieces of legislation to improve the lives of veterans, including the Whole Veteran Act, the Vet Center Eligibility Expansion Act, the Support for Suicide Prevention Coordinators Act, the FIGHT Veteran Suicide Act, the Veterans Compensation Cost-of-living Adjustment Act, the Veterans’ Care Quality Transparency Act and the Veterans’ Education, Transition, and Opportunity Prioritization Plan Act. ■

Students earn distinction for films Awards given at ‘Beyond the Peaks Student Film Festival’

TUPPER LAKE | AdkAction’s inaugural “Beyond the Peaks Student Film Festival” took place at The Wild Center May 10. The film festival was created in close partnership with Tupper Lake Central School District’s film class and organizers said it “shattered expectations for a first-year festival.” In total, 50 student films from seven school districts in the Adirondacks were submitted to the festival. Prizes and trophies were awarded for nine film categories: animation, public service announcement, drama, documentary, open, made in the Adirondacks, comedy, horror/ sci-fi/fantasy and audience choice award.

WINNERS

“True Colors,” created by Mackenzie Burnett and William Strack from Tupper Lake High School, won the animation category. The film tackled topics like self-acceptance, being different and letting one’s authentic self shine. “You’re a Wizard Harry” by Carley LaRose from Newcomb High School won the comedy category and featured “impressive” special effects.

The inaugural ADKAction “Beyond the Peaks Student Film Festival” was held May 10 at The Wild Center. Photo by Kate Santana “50 Years Cemented in Time: The Kathleen Bigrow Story” by Kasandra Sipler from Tupper Lake High School won the documentary category. The film showcased a local photographer who captured the spirit of the Adirondacks with her prolific portfolio of daily life.

Actor Sean Weil, best known for his roles in “Jessica Jones,” “Boardwalk Empire” and “Law & Order,” announced the winner of the drama category. “Sature,” created by Timofey Valov from Newcomb High School, won for tackling the topic of suicide.

The psychological thriller “Back in Time” by Kristina Khudiakova from Newcomb High School took top honors in the horror/ sci-fi/fantasy category. “Mountain is Mountain” created by Kristina Khudiakova from Newcomb High School took home the made in the Adirondacks category. The skier vs. snowboarder feud had a surprise ending and “superb” production quality. The open category invited longer films, up to 15 minutes. The winning film was “The Visitor” created by Kanatires Barreiro, Autumn Benedict, Sohrenhes George and Ienonkwahawis from Salmon River High School. The film tells the story of how the creator brought the gift of plant medicines to the Bear Clan people. “Don’t be Stupid,” created by Lawrence Lobdell from Westport High School, won the public service announcement category. Finally, “Lockdown” by Hallie Hurwitz, Elizabeth Hynes, Alibra Rodriguez, Ireland Sample and Bryn Walsh from Beekmantown High School won the audience choice award for their portrayal of the emotional toll of school shootings. All the winning films are available for viewing at adkaction.org/project/student-film-festival. Teachers and students interested in participating in “Beyond the Peaks Film Festival” in 2020 are welcome to email info@adkaction.org to be added to the contact list for next year. ■
