Darlene Duff y is the 2018 Minerva Citizen of the Year

OLMSTEDVILLE | Darlene Duff y, a long-term resident of Olmstedville, has been named the 2018 Minerva Citizen of the Year. Duff y has been the face of Olmstedville for many years, dating back to the early 1980s. She had a 28-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 2012 from the Olmstedville Post Office. At the corner of county Routes 29 and 30 stands Sullivan’s Store which has been in place for many, many years. Duff y had her start in the grocery business

Duff y was modest about her selection as Citizen of the Year. “I like to do things for people – I like to treat people like I would like to be treated,” she said. “There are so many more deserving folks in town.” Duff y went over a list of volunteer activities she’s been involved with in the Town of Minerva and in some cases, activities with which she remains involved. She was a Minerva Central School (MCS) Board Member for nearly seven years from the late 1980s into the 1990s. She was the MCS Alumni Association Treasurer for about 25 years and is still an active member. Duffy has also been involved with the Minerva Community School Fund (previously Dollars for Scholars) for about 30 years, and has served as a RSVP driver for the past six years. » Duffy Cont. on pg. 2

when she leased the store in 1983, buying it from the Sullivan family in 1989. The store burned to the ground in 1999, but Duff y kept it going, rebuilding at the same location. She had thought about not rebuilding, considering the soil contamination that had been a problem in the 1990s. The soil was cleansed, new fuel tanks placed, and the store lived again. “I couldn’t see the town without a store in Olmstedville, and I have never had regrets about rebuilding,” Duff y said. Numerous visitors — local folks and tourists alike — stopped by during this reporter’s interview, keeping her very busy. Duffy would have to get up and head to the cash register, always with a smile and a kind word. “People ask me if I’m a Sullivan. I live in a house that was once owned by the Sullivan’s and my daughter lives in an old Sullivan house. I’m a Sullivan in here.” Here Duff y pointed to her heart.

With three kids and six grandchildren, all of whom have either graduated from MCS or are currently attending, Duffy and her family are thoroughly enmeshed in the community. She is very proud of the fact that all three of her children are living in the Town of Minerva. Duffy recognizes that, once graduated from high schools in the area, kids generally leave town and find other states or regions in which to live. She’s also proud that two of her kids work as mail carriers in the area, continuing the family connection to the U.S. Postal Service. Duffy is modest and quiet about her achievements in the community and about her being named Minerva Citizen of the Year. Given her business’s location at the four corners in Olmstedville and her approachable, personable way, Duffy is an extremely important representative of the Minerva community. ■

EMS training available in Warrensburg WARRENSBURG | Training for prospective and current emergency medical services personnel across the southeastern Adirondacks will be available at the headquarters of Warrensburg EMS, located at 3 King St. in Warrensburg, starting in July. Warrensburg EMS is providing the training sessions, applicable to all skill levels, either at low or no cost due to grant funding from the Glenn and Carol Pearsall Adirondack Foundation. Courses are as follows: July 23 and July 30: Pre-hospital trauma life support, taught by Tony Lipari (NR-P, FC-P, RN, CIC) is a 16-hour course covering treatment of the multi-system trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs. Aug. 7: Basic pediatric and adult heart-saver, first aid, CPR, AED. Committee OKs funding for yurt, but not Wayne Stock Decision doesn’t sit well with Johnsburg super By Christopher South STA FF W RITER

JOHNSBURG | The Johnsburg Town Board has accepted the recommendation of the Johnsburg Occupancy Tax Committee to provide $7,000 for a warming yurt at Gore Mountain. But the group suggested nothing for the North Country Hardship Fund’s (NCHF) annual “Wayne Stock” event. The difference, as described in a handout distributed at last month’s town board meeting, was the New York Ski Educational Foundation (NYSEF) believed the yurt would “help draw competitive races to Gore.” NYSEF requested $10,000 and the committee recommended $7,000. NCHF asked for $10,000 for Wayne Stock, which the town has helped fund for 10 years, but this time the committee determined it was not sure if the event meets the committee’s goals or expectations. The recommendation did not sit well with Johnsburg Supervisor Andrea Hogan, who said she was uncomfortable with the level of funding going to NYSEF, which has fundraising capabilities, while not funding the NCHF, a notfor-profit organization. “Over 1,000 people come out to Wayne Stock and have a good time,” Hogan said. Hogan suggesting moving $1,000 out of the NYSEF award and giving it to NCHF. Councilman Peter Olesheski, chairman of the Johnsburg Occupancy Tax Committee, said Wayne Stock has been allowed to “slip by” for 10 years, but it doesn’t meet the guidelines for receiving occupancy tax money. The town board passed a resolution accepting the committee’s recommendation, but some members indicated they would try to secure other funding for the event if possible.

“We’re looking into other, sustainable and meaningful ways to support our local non profits,” Hogan said. The Warren County local law dealing with occupancy tax says it shall be used for tourism promotion and tourist convention development, through the promotion of tourist activities, conventions, trade shows, special events and supporting activities. NCHF secretary Tammy Bukovinsky said Wayne Stock draws about 1,300 people. “People come from Saratoga and all over just for this event,” she said. Bukovinsky said while disappointed, she understands why the committee and board made the decision they did. She said in the past Wayne Stock has always received $2,500 from the Town of Johnsburg for the free to enter, two-day event, which since 2010 has raised $180,000 to benefit local families. Wayne Stock, normally held in early August, was created in 2008 to raise funds for Wayne Bukovinsky, who was involved in a serious motorcycle accident. As a way of giving back to the community, Bukovinsky started the fund to raise money for people living in Warren, Essex, Hamilton, Washington or Saratoga counties who have suffered a recent tragedy. The Johnsburg Occupancy Tax Committee held two meetings before making award recommendations, one to allow applicants to make presentations and a second to deliberate. The committee includes Olesheski, John Stafford, Emily Stanton, Deb Zack, Bernadette Speech, Dwayne Spitzer, Lisa Solomon and Dave Skibinski. Besides the NYSEF award, other occupancy tax awards ranged from $475 for Gem Radio to put on its Graveyard Walk and $4,000 for Tannery Pond Center’s 2018 concerts and events series. Gem Radio was denied funding for line dancing, as was Our Town Theatre Group for a summer musical workshop. The Town of Johnsburg received requests for $48,413 in occupancy tax for 2018 and recommended awards of $26,378, with an estimated $28,000 still available for 2018. ■

One Hundred Years Ago – July, 1918 Unless the body is caught among the debris at the bottom of the pond and held down, it is possible that it will rise of itself after several days.

BAD DAY AT KELLUM POND

Ira Hewitt, 82, while fishing from a rowboat late Saturday afternoon, July 20, 1918, at Kellum Pond, accompanied by his eight year old grandson, Clarence Tripp, stood up to put on his coat, lost his balance, fell into the pond and was drowned. He sank without a struggle, the waters closed over him and he was seen no more. His body has not yet been recovered although a large number of searchers have worked many long hours in an effort to bring the aged man to the surface with grappling hooks. It is stated that where he went down the bottom of the pond is very muddy and is also covered with dead trees which have fallen in the water from time to time. It is believed that his clothing has caught on some of these obstructions and the body is thus held down.

SMALL BOY TRAUMATIZED

The little boy, badly frightened when his grandfather fell from the boat, waited anxiously for him to rise to the surface, and when he did not again appear, he rowed ashore for assistance. Fred Tripp, Mr. Hewitt’s son-in-law, with whom he made his home, summoned other men of the vicinity and went to the scene of the accident. They immediately began dragging for the body and continued until dark when the search was abandoned until morning. It has been continued every day since but without result.

LOOKING FOR A PROBABLE CAUSE

The boy stated that a short time before the drowning his grandfather went ashore and drank very freely of water from a spring that was very cold. It is thought that the water, coupled with the intense heat, may have caused the old man to have a chill causing him to attempt to put on his coat, lose his balance and fall into the water. Ira Hewitt had lived all his life in the neighborhood of Spruce Mountain, where Kellum Pond is situated. He is the third brother of the Hewitt family to meet death by drowning, the others being James and Miles Hewitt, who were drowned a number of years ago at The Glen.

DISASTROUS JUNE FREEZE

The news from all the northern towns include stories of great damage done to gardens by the big freeze near the end of June 1918, and the loss is estimated at thousands of dollars. Entire gardens were ruined in many cases and the ground has been plowed up and planted with buckwheat. The damage was widespread and covered practically all of the northern part of New York state. Sunday was the coldest June 23 in 10 years, but wind and fog averted some further damage by frost. The following Tuesday brought an agreeable change, and seasonable weather again prevails with a promise of a heat wave to come on June 29, 1918. The heavy

frost did lots of damage to gardens particularly in the vicinity of Athol. Beans and potatoes, budded, were laid flat and so were corn, pumpkins and squash. (Update – If this phenomenon was not bad enough, on Saturday afternoon, July 6, 1918, a severe hail storm did considerable damage in North River to the crops there. Food must have become short that coming winter. In 1918, old Mother Nature showed her claws and in 2018 she reversed her tactics to show her evil other side. The old saying is, “It’s either a feast or a famine.”

Eight students were graduated from the Lake George High School on Tuesday evening, June 25, 1918. They are Martha Parrott, Lucille Worden, Lucy Forsell, Dorothy Hubble, Alice Eldridge, Alice Shaw, Gwendolyn Brown and Frederick Howe. The Rev. E.M. Parrott gave the address.

A son was born at Johnsburgh on June 16, 1918 to Mrs. Irving Armstrong. He has been named Irving Donald Armstrong. A daughter was born at East Thurman on June 17, 1918 to Mrs. Bert Reynolds. She has been named Elsie Louise Reynolds. A daughter was born at Riverbank on July 4, 1918 to Mrs. Owney Coon, but the baby lived for only a short time. She was named Laura Grace Coon. The father is serving in the army. A baby arrived at Riverbank on July 5, 1918 to Mrs. Dennis Pratt. The father is serving in the army.

LADY SUFFERS DAMAGE

While descending the steps of a side piazza at the home of her niece, Mrs. James A. Emerson on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. Emma Dickinson of Champlain, missed her footing and fell heavily to the ground, breaking her right thigh bone. Dr. Griﬃn was called and removed her to the Saratoga Hospital where she is resting as comfortably as can be expected. Mrs. Dickinson is seventy-eight years old and the knitting of this large bone must necessarily be slow. (Update – The historic old Emerson House, located on the corner of Main Street and Emerson Avenue in Warrensburgh, was once the home of Senator James A. Emerson, and the house has many stories to tell. It is the first house south of today’s Top’s grocery store plaza. The present day owner, Faithanne Buck, has told me that someday she would like to write a history of her beautiful house. )

It is a John Davies’ take on the traditional fairy tale and uses the music of Mozart, Donizetti and Rossini in a delightful show that teaches audiences about the perils of being a bully. The SCOTUS Wars

As I write this column, President Trump has yet to announce his oﬃcial nominee for the open position on By Dan Alexander the Supreme Court. • PUBLISHER • The president has narrowed down his finalists and once announced, the war of words, doom and candidate character assassination will begin. What is known at this time is approximately 45 percent of the country is outraged by the selection, another 45 percent couldn’t be more pleased and approximately 10 percent doesn’t know there is an opening and could care less that we even have a Supreme Court, let alone understand what their role in the country is all about. It’s comforting to know that things are so predictable here in the land of the free and home of the brave. I hope you understand, I am being sarcastic. There really is no other way to approach what we are about to go through. Over the past few Supreme Court appointments, the skirmishes have been relatively mild compared to what will take place in this current environment. The anger and in-your-face battle that will set the tone this time around will be epic as both sides appear to be dug-in for the duration. This appointment and perhaps the next will shape the court if not the country for the next several decades. The left has made it clear that no candidate nominated by this president is acceptable despite all having been overwhelmingly approved for the lower court positions they now hold. The right has made it clear they do not want an activist jurist but a pure constitutionalist who will adhere to interpretation of the constitution, versus legislating from the bench. Given the current political climate, these hearings could well set the stage for an even greater period of stepped up resistance and violence across the nation. It’s hard to see how this SCOTUS confirmation battle can do anything but divide the country even further than we already are, especially if the opposing senators refuse to give the nominee a fair hearing. Optimistically, we can hope that through a fair confirmation process both sides can be heard and the nominee is sufficiently skilled to win over popular public opinion as being fair, compassionate, and well above politics. How this all plays out will set the tone for the national political demeanor for many years to come. ■

As a result of the mounting problems, the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) introduced a pilot project ahead of the July 4 holiday weekend to tamp down on public safety issues along the popular Route 73 corridor stretching from Keene to Lake Placid. The initial actions include “striping” lots to better delineate parking, increasing the number of Port-O-Potties and installing educational kiosks to steer visitors elsewhere, as well as flashing electronic boards pointing to their existence. The DEC will also further limit roadside parking in additional areas to improve the line of sight for motorists. These are all good, common-sense solutions that are long overdue considering the horror stories have been stacking up for years. While some skeptics were quick to criticize the effectiveness of the actions over the weekend, the DEC and other stakeholders involved in the efforts should be commended for being proactive. To the Editor: I appreciated Dan Alexander’s June 23 (op-ed) on truth. However, I found his conclusion inadequate. Good common sense includes wisdom, discernment along with good judgment and must have love as its foundation (where do we see this today)? In fact, the present downward plunge of our nation would prove that man does not have, in himself, much common sense. Truth is elusive because it has both a spiritual and moral dimension to it. It goes beyond mere intellectual knowledge and therefore must have elements of faith based on results of the outworking of this faith. Truth must have absolutes to it, or there is no one truth. out — we’re not entirely sure kiosks are enough to convince people to forgo their debut trip up Algonquin— and the state agency has admitted this is the first in series of proposed measures to promote sustainable visitation. But we also cannot underestimate the effectiveness of educational outreach and social media campaigns. A stakeholder pointed out that often this guest misbehavior — the illegal parking, the erratic driving, the eroded and environmentally-decimated trails with poo everywhere — is a result of ignorance, and ongoing and prolonged education for these visitors by the community will likely be needed in order for bad habits to be culled. This week is sure to be full of fast-moving developments. The Adirondack Park Agency and DEC are currently reviewing draft Unit Management Plan (UMP) amendments for the High Peaks Wilderness and Vanderwhacker Mountain Wild Forest Areas. If approved, larger changes will be on the way, including the permanent relocation of the Cascade and Porter mountain trailhead to the nearby Mt. Van Hoevenberg complex, as well as creation of a new trail up Mt. Van Hoevenberg by Columbus Day Weekend in October. Those are good ideas. So are the ones presented by environmental groups, including the implementation of

a permit system for hikers, presented by the Adirondack Wild, and a parking reservation system, offered by the Adirondack Council. Again, despite efforts to direct visitors elsewhere, the High Peaks will always be the main attraction, and asking outdoor adventurers to go somewhere else is akin to asking lovebirds to visit Paris but take a hard pass at going up the Eiffel Tower. The devil is obviously in the details, and we like the idea of multi-year test programs to see if these are ideas worth implementing on a permanent basis. We also agree with the Adirondack Council that the APA should give the DEC more time to weigh the UMPs to ensure compliance with the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan, the document that governs all land-use issues in the Adirondacks. The green group joins others who contend the APA accelerated the review process of the DEC’s plan without reacting to the public comments generated, a measure criticized by the nonprofit as an “administrative shortcut.” Considering how much is at stake, stepping on the brakes might not be a bad idea. Lastly, we’d be remiss if we didn’t echo the clarion call for the state to hire more forest rangers, who are on the frontlines grappling with these issues daily, performing heroic feats of rescue as stewardship falls by the wayside. — The Sun Editorial Board ■

Parking on residential property in village faces regulation By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

LAKE GEORGE | An ordinance that allows village residents to host public parking on their properties during three local special events will likely be ready for consideration by the village board at their July 16 meeting. Lake George Mayor Robert Blais told the village board at their June meeting that village and town planning director Dan Barusch was now working on drafting regulations for public parking on private property — which is now counter to local zoning laws — during the Americade motorcycle rally, the Fourth of July, and the Adirondack Nationals Car Show. “Allowing public parking on private prop-

erty is a good idea — so local residents make a little extra money, and it allows us to accommodate more visitors to village,” Blais said. While the village trustees had suggested recently that the proposed regulations include a requirement for residents to obtain a permit from the village and provide proof of insurance, Blais said he’d rather not include such mandates in the ordinance. But Trustee John Earl said he supported requiring insurance so residents couldn’t claim ignorance of their liability risks. Blais responded that residents would instead be warned by the village that by hosting public parking they were “opening themselves up to tremendous liability.” Blais said the local law, however, was likely to mandate that vehicles entering and exiting

Theater group to oﬀer youth summer theater programs

NORTH CREEK| Our Town Theatre Group is bringing its successful childrens and teens and tweens musical theatre workshops back to Tannery Pond Community Center this summer. Aspiring performers can participate in a week-long workshop and learn about acting, singing, dancing, creating costumes and working together, resulting in a performance for family and friends at the Lyle Dye Auditorium at Tannery Pond Community Center. This year’s youth workshop for students going into grades 1-4 will take place Monday, July 30 through Friday, August 3 with a performance on Saturday, August 4. The teens and tweens workshop for students going into grades 5-8 will take place Monday, August 6 through Friday, August 10 with a performance on Saturday, August 11. Attorney general headlines are a political hit job

To the Editor: I didn’t vote for Donald Trump and watching national TV almost borders on tedium as things are more like a political world wrestling match than the modern America I grew up in. However, the recent headline-grabbing action by the acting New York attorney general has all the fingerprints of a political hit job. I know from personal knowledge that there was some pretty funny business in the past in Westport over the two cottages resold out of the Ballard Park Foundation to the tune of maybe $700,000 and the sidetracking of the charitable bequest of the Kobel farm by Camp Dudley must have reaped well over a million. As I recall, all these episodes of selfdealing reaped a collective yawn from the IRS, so go figure. William Kuntz III, Elizabethtown ■

Blais said the public parking would be allowed for the full seven days of Americade week and Thursday through Saturday during the annual Adirondack Nationals Car Show — but for only one day for the Fourth of July festivities. Earl expressed concern, however, about the potential noise and disruption of a large number of motorcycles hosted in a residential neighborhood. “It’s one thing to have a yard filled with six to eight cars, and another with 28 motorcycles,” he said. Blais responded that for many years, it has

difficult for people to find a parking space during Americade. Also, Blais noted that Americade’s block party drew a crowd of thousands and was a substantial success. Trustee John Root requested that village workers remove extensive black tire marks on Canada St. in front of Shepard park caused by “burnouts” conducted by stunt motorcyclists during the block party. “It’s an eyesore; it looks like total lawlessness occurred,” Root said. Blais responded that the burnouts would be a factor in deciding in upcoming years whether to permit such block parties — and that the village’s fees for closing down Canada Street would likely be increased. ■

Trump takes undeserved credit for Obama economy

To the Editor: For an unprecedented 104 consecutive months, the economy has grown. Trump has been president for only the last 18 of those months, and yet incomprehensibly, he is claiming complete and sole responsibility for the state of the economy. Full-scale (and fallacious) denigration of “President Obama’s economy” ranks high on the list of talking-points-du-jour for Trump and his followers. The president constantly touts the unemployment-rate as one of his most impressive accomplishments. This might be so for some, but the data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics tell a different story. The unemployment-rate was 7.8 and rising when Barack Obama came into office. It peaked 10 months later at 10 and has steadily declined since. At Trump’s inauguration, the rate was 4.8 and has fallen to 3.8 over the past 18 months. Perhaps Mr. Trump can crow for having “caused” the one-point reduction, but the lion’s share (83 percent) of the credit for the declining unemployment-rate is Obama’s. Another of Trump’s claims concerning Obama’s economy is that the GDP growth-rate was anemic…between one and two percent. Once again, the facts indicate otherwise. According to the U. S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, in the first quarter of 2009 the economy was shrinking at a rate of -1.94 percent. This decline continued, reaching -3.19 percent in the second quarter of 2009. It then began to grow steadily, “spiking” at 5.21 percent in the 3rd quarter of 2014. This growth continued until the 4th quarter of 2016.

Near collision with patrol car leads to arrest

LAKE GEORGE | Joseph W. Naylor, age 19, of Southbury, Connecticut was arrested and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated following a traffic stop July 5 in the Town of Lake George. Naylor was arrested after driving along the shoulder for approximately a quarter mile and nearly striking a patrol car on state Route 9 in the Town of Lake George. Naylor later submitted to a chemical breath test and was found to have a blood-alcohol content of .2 percent. Naylor was released and is scheduled to appear in Lake George Town Court at a later date. ■

The average quarterly GDP growth-rate throughout Obama’s presidency was 3.01 percent. When, in a truly fair and balanced manner, all relevant factors are considered, one can only conclude that, for many of us, this present economy — Obama’s economy — is performing well. David Winchell, an agency spokesman, said Warren County undertook the project in response to DEC comments on the county’s engineering assessment of the Mill Pond Dam. The engineering assessment of the dam is required under DEC dam safety regulation to protect public safety and the environment. Engineers inspected the “batter” of the back of the dam, a term referring to a sloping wall, and it required lowering the water level. Inspectors closed the gate at the top of the pond while opening a gate or spillway at the opposite end to let the water out of the pond. The county has lowered the level of the pond many times before, Hajos said, noting the replacement of the dam gate several years ago. The department started draining Mill Pond on the evening of June 8, according

to Hajos, and work started on June 12 at 8:30 p.m. The county was notified at 10:50 p.m. the same day that the work was completed and the foreman closed the lower gates to refill Mill Pond. “It’s filled to the brim,” said Horicon Supervisor Matt Simpson, who had received a number of calls asking about the pond. Simpson said lowering the water level did not negatively impact trout and other fish in the pond. The Warren County Fish Hatchery had stocked Mill Pond with about 750 trout prior to the annual Barney Barnhard Memorial Fishing Derby for Kids held on May 19. Simpson said he could see the fish schooling in the channel that remained when the level was lowered. Hajos said the county never completely drains the pond, leaving enough water for the fish. ■

GLENS FALLS | Former Special Forces medic Gary Beikirch told a group of men at the Christian Business Men’s Connection (CBMC) quarterly breakfast, held last week at the Queensbury Hotel in Glens Falls, that he has faced death more than once in his life. The first time was April 1, 1970 on the battlefield in Vietnam, when his special forces unit was attacked by 10,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. He suffered a spinal concussion that left him temporarily paralyzed, and was shot three times. He credits a 15-yearold soldier, one of the Montagnard people of Vietnam, with saving his life.

Beikirch referred to such incidents as “stopping places” where some of life’s battles are fought. Another stopping place, and another life and death struggle, was the hospital where he spent 10 months recovering from his wounds only to be called names and spat on when he returned home. The hurt from the insults, he said, was worse than the wounds he received in combat. While Beikirch was in the hospital, he often wondered if he would wake up after falling asleep. He had seen the hospital orderlies pulling white sheets over soldiers who had expired. One day he opened his eyes and a man was standing beside his bed. The man said he was a chaplain and he had visited Beikirch for three days before he woke. “He asked me if I wanted to pray and I told him I didn’t know how to pray,” Beikirch said. “He said, ‘That’s okay, God knows how to listen.’” Beikirch would become a Christian and eventually enter seminary. He went on to graduate school so he could become a counselor.

Beikirch opened his recent presentation with a story about driving with his wife from their home in Rochester, where he spent 33 years as a counselor in a middle school, to a speaking engagement in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Before leaving, Beikirch printed directions from Mapquest — GPS was not available then, he said. Down the road his wife, Lolly, asked if he had the Mapquest directions, which he had left on the table at home.

Former Green Beret Gary Beikirch was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service in Vietnam. Although severely wounded himself, Beikirch attempted to give aid to his fellow soldiers. He returned to the United States and went college, then seminary, and earned a graduate degree in counseling before spending a career as a counselor in a middle school. Photos by Christopher South “I said, ‘Hey, I’m a Green Beret. I can find my way in the jungle, so I can find Altoona,’” Beikirch said. They ended up going the right direction, and nearing Altoona, Mrs. Beikirch asked if he knew where they had to go. He said it was the Marriott, and when she asked if he knew how to find it, Beikirch said, “How big can Altoona be?” He saw a sign reading “Marriott” and after driving around for a while he asked someone for directions to get to the sign. He eventually found the way, but learned it was just a sign, not the hotel. Beikirch told the CMBC group it’s not about success, it’s about significance. He succeeded in getting where he wanted to go, but there was no significance to arriving there. He quoted Proverbs 16:25, saying, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” Beikirch said when he became a Green Beret, he was doing it for his own honor. He did not choose the circumstances leading to his being awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, saying that God gave him that honor. He said he felt an obligation to do something with that honor, quoting from Psalm 49, saying, “A man who is in honor, yet does not understand, is like the beasts that perish.”

Beikirch said he has a Facebook page with 3,000 to 4,000 former students as “friends.” Over 500 are serving in the military. They are all different ranks and serving all over the world. Plans to extend county Bikeway from Lake George to Wbg. move forward By Thom Randall STA FF W RITER

LAKE GEORGE | For decades, the idea of establishing a dedicated bicycle path between Lake George and Warrensburg has been discussed with enthusiasm. Now, it has moved closer to reality. Recently, conceptual plans of extending the Warren County Bikeway from Lake George 7.1 miles north to Warrensburg was present-

ed to municipal officials of Lake George. Plans were revealed detailing how a bicycle route could be established through Lake George Village with a priority on safety for bicyclists while minimizing disruption of traffic on heavily traveled Canada Street. Adirondack-Glens Falls Transportation Council Director Aaron Frankenfeld described the preferred proposed route to the village board. Dan Barusch, planning director for both the village and the town of Lake George, presented the conceptual plans — developed

in a collaborative effort between regional and state transportation officials and local municipal employees. Barusch said the Bikeway extension could be a reality in one to five years. The plans call for the 9.4-miles-long county Bikeway to be extended from its present terminus at the Lake George Battlefield Park beside Beach Road, in a southwest direction up West Brook Road to Canada Street. This initial extension was chosen over establishing a “bicycle boulevard” up the median

of Beach Road — a long-term preferred route — because of disruption of Beach Road’s nationally-renowned porous pavement, which was installed in 2013 in a multi-milliondollar road reconstruction project. Village Mayor Robert Blais said that eventually the Bikeway should be routed up Beach Road, as it would take bicyclists past the village rest rooms and the village’s visitors center. But for the next decade, the West Brook link to Route 9 makes the most sense, Frankenfeld said. ■

Chestertown doesn’t financially support VFW, American Legion representative says Veterans organizations provide various services to town By Christopher South STA FF W RITER

CHESTERTOWN | The commander of Chestertown VFW Post 5513 appeared before the town board last week saying the town does not financially support local veterans service organizations, though the groups provide services to the town. “The town gives us no money. We buy flags for the cemeteries and the town reimburses us,” said VFW Post Commander Harry Brundage, who is also a member of American Legion Post 964 in Chestertown. Brundage said the town authorized $300 to be paid to the veterans group to pay for the flags. The matter of supporting veterans organizations was also raised at last month’s board meeting, when the board entertained a request from the American Legion to waive tipping fees for construction debris. American Legion Post 964 is planning to remodel the post hall to make it more handicap-accessible and to add insulation. The veterans group has not been able to meet at post in the winter. The VFW has been meeting at Christ Church

in Pottersville during the cold months. A request was made for the town to waive the fees associated with dumping the debris from the remodeling and the Chester Town Board agreed to waive fees for five tons. “You gave us five tons — the Town of Horicon said, ‘We’ll take it all,’” Brundage said. “I just want everyone to understand that money does not come to us from this town.”

WHAT DO THE VETERANS DO FOR THE TOWN?

At last month’s board meeting, while considering the request from the veterans to waive tipping fees, Councilman Mike Packer asked: “What do they do for the town?” Brundage said last week the veterans groups organize parades scheduled for patriotic holidays. The veterans groups are also a liaison between the town and Warren County Veterans Services and they are notified by the county whenever a Chestertown veteran registers with the county. Two members of the veterans organizations are certified to counsel veterans, and they build handicap ramps at homes of disabled veterans. Brundage said the veterans pay to send students to the state American Legion Boys State, support local businesses during Chester Day and participate in Tri-Lakes Business Alliance events.
