QUEENSBURY | Predicting crushing tax increases in Lake George required to pay for the village’s new $24 million wastewater treatment plant, Lake George Mayor Robert Blais asked Warren County leaders Nov. 19 for $100,000 annual contributions, over the next 10 years, to pay off part of the sewer plant debt. WARREN COUNTY | Municipalities, civic groups, organizations and private entities in the Adirondacks were recently awarded smart-growth grants totaling more than $2.1 million in an effort to boost local municipalities’ local economies, their recreational and cultural amenities and area tourism — while protecting the environment. The projects are located primarily in Warren, Essex and Hamilton counties. In Warren County, the town governments of Lake George and Chester were grant recipients.
PARKS ON FRENCH MOUNTAIN, TRAILS IN CHESTER FUNDED
The towns of Lake George and Queensbury were jointly awarded $75,000 to help launch development of the McPhillips Preserve at French Mountain, a 320-acre park off Bloody Pond Road on the side of French Mountain. The grant is to be used to draft final designs and prepare permits for a series of hiking and mountain biking trails, in addition to preparing plans for an outdoor meeting space, parking areas and signs. The town of Chester was awarded
Plans to reconstruct a 1756 sawmill along the Lachute River in Ticondergoa — as depicted in this drawing — are moving forward after the state announced a $100,000 grant to help pay for construction designs of the venue, expected to be a popular attraction downtown. Courtesy illustration $30,000 to develop a master plan for the Cunningham Community Forest Trail, to be primarily located on a 104acre town-owned plot of woods in the hamlet of Chestertown. Plans call for extending an existing nature trail adjacent to the Chester Municipal Center and connecting it to the sidewalks in Chestertown, creating a pleasant pedestrian loop on which citizens can experience nature.
ESSEX COUNTY CULTURAL AND TOURISM INITIATIVES
In Essex County, various projects in the towns of Ticonderoga and Westport, as well as in the High Peaks region and in the village of Saranac Lake, are to be funded with hundreds of thousands of dollars. A grant of $99,624 was awarded to
Essex County Cooperative Extension to assist Adirondack Harvest in their website development, media promotion and outreach events. Based in Lewis, Adirondack Harvest strives to support local sustainable farming and agriculture by developing markets for their products. The town of Ticonderoga is to receive $100,000 to draft plans for reconstruction of an 18th century sawmill, to feature a waterwheel and a water flume from the LaChute River to the sawmill. The grant is also to bankroll plans for the venue’s site work, parking lot and utility service. The Fort Ticonderoga Association was awarded $100,000 to add accessibility features to the Fort’s 1826 Pavilion, including a larger entrance foyer, new bathrooms and a wrap-around porch. WARRENSBURG | An array of new activities are featured in this year’s 31st edition of “Christmas in Warrensburgh,”
a beloved holiday festival that celebrates the treasured traditions of the rural Adirondacks, while bringing people together in a festive spirit. Scheduled for Friday, Dec. 6, through Sunday, Dec. 8, this enduring fest offers craft sessions for children and adults, a
community tree-lighting with caroling, church bazaars, acoustic music, gift shopping in quaint local stores and warm hospitality throughout town — as well as encounters with Santa Claus, accompanied by live reindeer.
QUEENSBURY | Warren County’s final 2019 general election results — including the absentee ballot tallies — were released Nov. 25, and in most cases, the winning candidates’ vote advantage widened over the Election Day count. No previously reported election outcome was overturned by the absentee votes. Among all the candidates for top posts the county’s northern towns, Johnsburg Supervisor Andrea Hogan experienced the largest net increase in her winning margin, boosting her vote total over her challenger, present town Highway Superintendent Daniel Hitchcock to 548-173. In the town of Chester, town supervisor Craig Leggett’s winning margin remained exactly the same, as he and challenger John Maday each had 38 votes added to their Nov. 5 vote tally: the final count in the race was 579 to 434. In Thurman, however, the margin shrank a little as town supervisor Cynthia Hyde picked up a few more absentee votes than challenger Susan Shepler, whose victory in the election was confirmed in the final 248219 vote count. In Hague, incumbent town supervisor Edna Frasier’s margin narrowed in the final count: she received 215 votes, while challenger Joshua Patchett received 143. See ELECTION RESULTS » pg. 2

The Essex County Industrial Development Agency was awarded $100,000 towards the revitalization of Ticonderoga’s Main Street businesses. The money would help bankroll a microenterprise grant fund to help businesses expand or to spark new enterprises. State officials say a more relevant array of goods and services are needed in downtown Ticonderoga, and that the historic character of the village needs to be preserved. A sum of $18,660 has been allocated for the Westport train station — to boost its accessibility, and upgrade its parking lot. The iconic 1876 station hosts not only Amtrak passengers, but the Depot Theatre. The town of Keene is to receive $88,850 for its trailhead improvement project. The grant is to fund work to enhancing the public’s access to the High Peaks. Primarily involving the Marcy Field Trailhead parking area, the project features adding signs to identify connector trails and expanding the hiker shuttle route. The grant is also to bankroll paving work, and paying for

staff to provide visitor information and hiker education. Adirondack Mountain Club was awarded a $66,000 grant to survey and re-design the hiker parking area at the group’s Heart Lake Program Center. Located at the busiest trailhead accessing the High Peaks Wilderness area, The Center attracts up to 100,000 visitors annually. Saranac Lake Village is to receive quite a few grants for various local projects. In an effort to boost arts and cultural tourism, the state has earmarked $37,150 to design a museum campus in the village’s historic downtown area. A grant of $100,000 is to go to Saranac Lake’s BluSeed Studios, an art gallery and cultural venue in a historic train warehouse. The money is earmarked for building upgrades and to create a pavilion, an outside classroom and concert area with adjacent sidewalks. The money is also to be spent on expansion and upgrades to the venue’s planned Pollinator Garden. Saranac Lake’s Adirondack Loon Center is to receive $50,000 to expand and improve its retail displays and educational exhibits, and boost its staffing. A grant of $30,000 was awarded to Adirondack Hamlets to Huts Trails Center in Saranac Lake for their interpretive displays that encourage forest stewardship and hiking safety. Pendragon Theatre in Saranac Lake is to receive $100,00 to plan its proposed facility’s energy conservation improvements,
permeable pavement and drought-resistant landscaping. Pendragon Theatre is taking action to rehabilitate a building which formerly hosted a home improvement store into a state-of-the art theater in an area considered high-priority for redevelopment.
HAMILTON CO. ALSO TO BENEFIT FROM GRANTS
In Hamilton County, the village of Speculator and the county government were grant awardees. Speculator is to receive $100,000 toward the restoration and reconstruction of the 1930s-era Hooker Hill fire tower to be situated in the village’s Ballfield Park. Hamilton County government is to receive $66,500- to study conditions of up to 10 priority recreational trails that lead to backcountry recreational venues. In a prepared statement, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said these grants would help create more livable communities while boosting tourism and local economies. Praising Gov. Cuomo, Hamilton County Board of Supervisors chairman Bill Farber said the grants in his county would boost recreational opportunities. In a companion statement, Shaun Gilliland said the funded projects would have lasting impact on improving the region’s quality of life and sustainability. “We share Gov. Cuomo’s vision of making our region a tremendous place to live, work, and recreate,” he said. ■

A boy attending Christmas in Warrensburgh in 2015 examines a candy cane presented to him by Santa. This year, the jolly elf will be returning on Saturday, Dec. 7, to the Warrensburg town hall — transformed into ‘Toyland’ for for one day — for the 2019 edition of the traditional holiday festival.
From XMAS IN WARRENSBURG » pg. 1
Headlining the list of additions for this year is a concert by renowned folk singer/songwriter Dan Berggren, who will be performing live at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, in Richards Library. No admission fee will be charged at the concert, but seating is quite limited,so people are urged to arrive early. Berggren, who grew up in the Adirondacks, has delighted audiences across the U.S. and overseas. He is acclaimed by music critics for his heartfelt songs that depict the lives of hardworking folks and the rural lifestyle. Mark Hauser of Vermont Public Radio has praised Berggren for his songs and his engaging performances. “Berggren is a genuine treasure; fresh and timeless, full of courage and down-to-earth richness,” he said. Also new this year are artisans and authors to be showcased during “Christmas in Warrensburgh”:
Acclaimed folk singer/song writer Dan Berggren, who has performed internationally, is to present a concert at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, in Warrensburg’s Richards Library during the time-honored holiday festival ‘Christmas in Warrensburgh.’ Photo provided Joy Muller-McCoola, a renowned felting artisan — who creates “Meditation Stone” pillows as well as hats, scarves and handbags from unspun wool — will be demonstrating her work from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday Dec. 7 at Deadwood Mountain Trading Co. at 3873 Main St. The store is also offering 10% off their jewelry. Also on Saturday Dec. 7, two noted local authors will be signing their books and discussing their works. Poet Pat Leonard of Warrensburg will be signing her books from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Riverside Gallery, 2 Elm St. while the Serendipity Spinners will be practicing their age-old craft from about 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. At Miller Antiques & More, 3729 Main St., professional organizer and local history blogger Beth Kinghorn will be signing her latest book from noon to 2 p.m., as noted watercolorist Mary Frank is at work. Also, the Warrensburgh Museum of Local History will be holding an opening reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday Dec. 6 featuring their exhibits “When the Trolley Came to Warrensburgh” as well as “Dressed for the Holidays.” Baroque music performed live by Courtly Music is to accompany the museum’s reception. The museum will be hosting visitors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. The festival will also include a new holiday open house from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday Nov. 8 at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, with craft workshops for both children and adults, as well as visits with Santa and face painting for youngsters. The craft sessions are guided by Casey Beal of the new ArtiRondaks Gallery & Studio of Stony Creek. In addition, Nemec’s Farm & Garden Center’s annual “Pet Photos with Santa”, set for 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday Dec. 7, is to be accompanied by another pet-related event at

The craft sessions in the town hall include gingerbread house decorating, miniature watercolor and Origami crafting, old-time wooden toy making, and fashioning of holiday ornaments and evergreen decorations. The town’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony is to be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Floyd Bennett Bandstand, an event that includes Santa and caroling; plus music by the Warrensburg Elementary School Band. Thoughts from Behind the Pressline
Support requested for The SUN
Each week, we do our best to provide our readers with timely, accurate community news, as well as coverage of education, features on engaging community members, and the high school sports coverage you have come to expect. We see it as our role to highlight the good things that are happening in our North Country communities, and to shine a spotlight on the many wonderful volunteers and organizations that might otherwise go unrecognized. More often than not, when we cover an event, we’re the only media there. Gone are the days when one of the paid regional dailies or local broadcast entities sent a camera operator and reporter to cover local events. Only the rare story that might have regional appeal is picked up by other entities. But while we’ve outlasted the competition for hyperlocal news, competition for advertising dollars – the lifeblood of our newspapers – has increased. At the same time, price increases beyond our control, affecting the cost of personnel, newsprint, supplies, equipment, and postage have increased and will continue to increase in the future. These challenges are not unique to The SUN. Newspapers across the country are struggling with the burden of increased costs and declining advertising revenues. In the past five years, more than 1,800 weaker publications have already collapsed under the weight.
PUBLISHER
Change is inevitable in everything. Those who refuse to accept the changes and adapt to the new norm, more often than not, find themselves in serious trouble. Our business model and our rural communities are currently undergoing some significant changes that must be addressed. We see changes all around us here in the North Country and across the nation. We see changes in political and cultural attitudes, in social activity, shopping patterns, and medical procedures. And yes, even changes with our local media companies. Sometimes change can be for the best, and yet other changes may not be all that welcomed when we see long-time valuable services changing, not for the better. Over the last few years, we’ve realized that our business model requires us to seek new revenue sources if we are to maintain and improve upon the services we provide with The SUN. Local news in rural communities such as ours requires a locally owned organization like The SUN to employ reporters and support staff to keep the local population well informed. Unlike other media companies that require payment or no service, we recognize that not everyone can afford a paid subscription. Many of our residents are on fixed incomes, but yet they still need easy access to the information we provide. For over 70 years, our fate has always been in the hands of the good folks here in our local communities. Many years ago, when we converted the newspaper from paid to one delivered free to every home by the U.S. Postal Service, we had faith that the community, if the service was valued the financial support would follow. So as times change, we now know that if our free services are to continue in its current form we will need to ask our readers to consider a voluntary subscription. We know it’s not the conventional approach, but typically we haven’t made a practice of following the traditional path. To my right is an editorial that outlines our plans and why this request is necessary. Inside the paper, you’ll find a half-page house ad that shows how you can support your local news coverage in The SUN. All the dollars brought in through this ongoing effort will go to fund our reporting staff spread throughout the vast region we cover. Our hope is we can raise enough dollars to expand our news coverage both in print and online while continuing to serve the region for many years to come. I thank you in advance for your consideration of our request. ■

I n look i ng for ways to cont rol expenses, we’ve attempted to make some reductions in our coverage area. In turn, readers, advertisers, and even town officials have stressed how important the role of The SUN plays in reaching and serving our rural communities. Now, before it is too late, we’re asking you to help us continue to perform The SUN’s mission of providing you with a source of compelling and accurate community news. Please consider for a moment the value you receive from the news, features, sports, commentary, fliers and local marketing information you read each week in your SUN. Is that worth 50 cents a week to you? Or $1? Perhaps more? If so, then, please consider contributing to this critical source of local journalism. Some of our readers may recall, the concept of paying for a subscription to the weekly newspaper is not a new one. Not too many years ago, the only way to receive our local weekly newspaper was to pay for an annual subscription or to plop down 50 cents a copy at a local convenience store. Over the years, we made the decision to deliver the paper to every household, free of charge. In doing so, local merchants and commercial operators were anxious to have their information provided to the readers in The SUN, delivered through the U.S. Postal Service.
That model of distribution helped us to increase our circulation and fill a valuable void at a time when other newspapers were experiencing circulation declines. And, for several years, we saw a corresponding uptick in advertising because our clients gained the benefit of those additional readers through our expanded reach. But, with new advertising competition as well as changes in consumer buying habits, that trendline has changed. While local advertising is, and will remain, our core revenue source, current trends suggest that without reader support, advertising alone will not cover the high costs we face maintaining our current rural circulation reach. That is where you come in. By providing The SUN with Enhanced Support (see page 2), you will help preserve and strengthen this vital community resource. You will also be eligible for monthly prize drawings and be invited to join our staff for periodic events where you can share your thoughts about the community, the newspaper, and how we can make The SUN an even more vital part of your community. For more than seventy years, Denton Publications, now rebranded as The SUN, has been telling the story of this magnificent area. With your support, we can continue to share the stories for many years to come. — Dan Alexander, Publisher ■

Mrs. Matilda Camp Tucker, 62, wife of Wallace Tucker, died at her home at 88 River Street, Warrensburg, Sunday morning, Dec. 28, 1959, after a lingering illness. She was the mother of Town Historian Mabel Tucker. Matilda Tucker was buried in the Warrensburg Cemetery. Mabel Tucker was born on April 24, 1916 in Kenyontown, Thurman. She had a brother, Beecher Tucker, three years younger. Mabel was very proud of her Indian ancestry which she acquired through the Camp family in the Indian Lake area. She became the first town historian in the town in 1964 when she was recruited by Supervisor Maynard Baker. Maynard always said that he felt proud that this was one of the best accomplishments he made while in office. Mabel wrote a book entitled, “Reflections and Recollections of the town with a past,” which contained a vast history of the Queen Village which was published by her loving Greenwood

POLITICS WAS HIS GAME
Gov. Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller, New York state governor, made a decision to not seek the Republican nomination for the presidency, which came with dramatic suddenness for the Republican Party. He told a news conference in South Bend Indiana that he will announce his decision on seeking the Republican nomination before the New Year legislature convenes on Jan. 6, 1960. The nation is engaged in a struggle to maintain world peace. (Note Governor Rockefeller was New York State governor for 14 years. He was finally sworn in as vice-president in Washington, D.C. on Dec. 19, 1974 under President Ford. His wife was Happy Rockefeller. He was one of the most

He is survived by his wife, Florence Hitchcock, three daughters, three sons and 18 grandchildren. He was the brother of Edith Waldron and Earl Hitchcock. His body was placed in a vault until spring. Frank H. Swinton, 77, a noted horsetrainer and driver, died early Thursday, Sept. 28, 1959 at his home in Warrensburg. He was injured at the Cobleskill Fair on Aug. 27, 1959. MYSTERY SOLVED
A lady, mother of the dead body found in a brook in Johnsburg, was located by District Attorney Robert Nolan who said that she admitted that the one-day-old boy discovered in a creek on Nov. 29, 1959, was hers and it had been born dead. It has not yet been decided just what charge should be brought against this mother of the child. See TURNING BACK THE PAGES » pg. 7

Holiday events slated in North Creek ‘Lights On in Johnsburg’ a popular tradition By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
NORTH CREEK | Johnsburg and North Creek are kicking off the holiday season with a variety of festive events. Starting at 11:45 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6, the Johnsburg Central School Pop Singers will be serenading seniors at Elderwood Nursing Center in North Creek, a beloved local tradition. Meanwhile, Community Bank on Main St. will be holding their Holiday Open House from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, with employees serving punch and homemade desserts — a practice at the bank for more than 30 years. Later in the day at 5:30 p.m., the Johnsburg/ North Creek annual community tree-lighting and candlelight service is to be held. Local pastors are to officiate in this event, joined by Santa and Mrs. Claus. Caroling will be lead by Katie Cole and the JCS Pop Singers, and those attending will be bathed in the warm glow of luminarias lining Main Street. Following the tree lighting, many of the

It was back in 1915 that the Warrensburg High School adopted as its official song a stirring poem entitled “A song of victory” which was composed at that time by a pupil of the academic department, Miss Francis Johnson, 14, daughter of S.E. Johnson, of Warrensburg.

Blais said that without the contribution, the pending huge increase in property taxes would be a heavy burden, not only on homeowners: He said that local businesses, forced to raise prices to stay solvent, would become less competitive — which would in turn dampen the county’s economy. Citing an example, Blais said the local Marriott Courtyard would pay $50,000 to $70,000 additional annually in taxes during the upcoming years without help from the county. Blais asked for the money to be drawn from the county’s Occupancy Tax, a 4% levy that hotels, motels and other accommodations charge guests. Warren County routinely receives more than $4 million annually in Occupancy Tax, doling it out not only to promote local events, but a minimum of $250,000 annually to the Cool Insuring Arena, as well as to fund boat-washing facilities. Cool Arena just recently was pledged an additional $100,000 per year to bankroll capital improvements. Blais told county leaders that they should treat Lake George as it does the Cool Arena, as Lake George hosts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year, and holds several dozen events per year that boost the county’s economy — but only 900-plus property owners in the village pay to provide the municipal services required to accommodate this tourism. “Our village hosts weekly fireworks, Americade, the Adirondack Nationals Car Show, fireworks, the Jazz festival, many music festivals, Lake George Winter carnival, and they all boost the quality of life in Warren County — and Lake George needs to be considered in the same vein as Cool Arena,” he said. The state has pledged about $7 million in grant funds to pay the plant’s capital costs, leaving about $17 million in debt — unless the state provides more grants. He said that the proposed $100,000 contribution by the county could last only 10 years, as
Lake George Village would be retiring enough debt by then to appropriate that much more annually. “You can imagine what would happen to the Fort William Henry, the Wingate hotel, and the Marriott Courtyard if they had to raise their room rates — it would hurt us all,” he said. “We’re going to need $100,000 per year regardless of whether the state gives us more grant funding, but if they come through with $13 million to $14 million, probably not.” He noted that state officials, aware of the mansions on Lake George, may have a skewed concept of the average Lake George Village resident’s wealth. He said residents of the village have an annual household income of only $41,283. “These folks paying the taxes — they pay for the village hosting hundreds of thousands of people each summer for the State of New York and Warren County,” Blais said Queensbury at-large supervisor Michael Wild questioned whether a contribution from the county should be drawn from the Occupancy tax, or another source. “I do support you in this endeavor,” he said to Blais. Glens Falls Ward 5 supervisor Ben Driscoll also said he was in favor of regional support, as he praised Blais for recognizing that many of Lake George Village’s residents would bear a substantial burden if they had to pay far more in taxes. “There are people in the village that are living paycheck to paycheck — and I appreciate Mayor Blais for reminding us,” Driscoll said. Warrensburg Supervisor Kevin Geraghty said the issue needed analysis and discussion, and the county Occupancy Tax Committee then voted to table the issue. “Tbere’s a lot of information about this to digest, but we shouldn’t procrastinate on the issue,” he said. ■

These notices will include name, date of death & birth, age, town and the name of the funeral home in charge of the arrangements. Like most newspapers, we do need to charge a small fee of $65 for a 250-word obituary which will include a picture (if supplied) in the paper. Larger sizes are also available. If the funeral home doesn’t place the obituary in The SUN you may submit an obituary by calling 518-873-6368, or you may email the Obituary to shannonc@suncommunitynews.com, and she will let you know the cost if it’s over 250 words.

Adk. Christkindlmarkt returns to Lake George Dec. 6-8 Outdoor holiday market features many new vendors, performers By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
LAKE GEORGE | Adirondack Christkindlmarkt, a holiday festival embracing a centuries-old European tradition, is returning to Lake George Festival Commons Friday, Dec. 6, through Sunday, Dec. 8, with more vendors and an expanded lineup of musical entertainment — as well as more spacious tents to shield those attending from wintry weather. Last year’s inaug ural edition of Adirondack Christkindlmarkt drew about 5,000 people to Lake George’s Charles Wood Park — more than four times the number of attendees expected.
The event’s coordinators are planning for a crowd of 7,000 this year. There is no admission charge for the festival. Forty vendors of holiday crafts and decor, gift items, handcrafted home furnishings and specialty foods are to be featured. Artisans are to be at work demonstrating and selling their creations. A new larger array of food with a European flair will be available to stave off the hunger of those attending, event organizers have said. Expanded children’s activities include crafting of holiday cards and ornaments in a warming tent. Appearances by Snoopy and other characters are planned. Entertainment is to include performances by local musicians Tim Ortiz, Frank Palangi, and PJ Duo, as well as a German folk dance troupe. On Saturday and Sunday, a total of five boat rides, with Santa onboard, will be offered by the Lake George Steamboat Co. ■

This year’s 22nd edition of ‘Lite Up the Village attracted several thousand people Nov. 30, who enjoyed seeing about 10,000 holiday lights suddenly electrified, heralded Santa’s arrival, participated in an ‘Ugly Sweater’ contest, and gazed at a fireworks display — as well as watching the procession of glowing firetrucks roll by. All these activities occurred prior to Santa holding court at the Lake George firehouse to hear children’s Christmas wishes as the Lake George Community Band played holiday music. Photo provided
activities will include a free pizza lunch and Penelope the Clown painting faces and doing other fun kid things. This event is free, but parents are asked to sign up by Dec. 6 with gift ideas for their child, and (within reason), Santa and his
elves will be ready with that gift. If you miss sign-up, just bring a wrapped gift for giving (and receiving). Meet at the Long Lake Town Hall (1130 Deerland Rd.) at 11 a.m., and sign up by calling 518-624-3077. ■

Sports Burgher boys split tourney games to open season

By Thom Randall CORRESPONDENT
WARRENSBURG | A youthful but determined Warrensburg boys basketball team started off their 2019-20 season last weekend by winning the first round of their own tournament versus Johnsburg, 46-37, falling a day later in the finals to The King’s School of Corinth by a score of 58-57. In the semifinal of the George Khoury Holiday Invitational Tournament, sophomore Dan Cunniffe led the team with 16 points, 12 rebounds and four assists, followed by eighth-grader Steve Schloss with 14 points and five rebounds. Contributing were juniors William “Chippy” Mason with seven points, and Thomas O’Sullivan who added three points and two assists. Senior Mike Tyrell dominated the boards with 11 rebounds. The Burghers’ roster of players shrank just days beforehand with the departure of several teammates, but the remaining athletes appeared unfazed by their exit. “We got a little bit tired and ran into a little bit of foul trouble, so we played some kids that I didn’t anticipate,” Warrensburg coach Mike Perrone said. “We have a small roster so we have a couple kids called up from the

JV squad and they gave great minutes. They didn’t know exactly what was going on at times, but it was important.”
For Johnsburg, Cameron Allen and Anthony Galle were top scorers with 10 points each, followed by Devon Millington with
eight points, Caleb Hughey with six points, and Ryan Morris with three. Johnsburg had a slow start to the game, as evidenced by the 31-14 halftime score, but they recovered by outscoring Warrensburg 23-15 in the second half. King’s School defeated Loudonville Christian in the other first-round game. Against King’s School, Cunniffe scored a career-high 31 points — including eight threepointers — and Mason scored 11 points, followed by Schloss with nine points, including two three-pointers, and O’Sullivan with six points. Johnsburgh/Minerva lost to Loudonville Christian in the consolation round. “We’ve been practicing with five or six players so we haven’t really worked on any plays with live players, so I feel we played really strong today,” Johnsburg/Minerva Coach Randy LaFountain said. The tournament is named after George Khoury, who spent 37 years coaching at Warrensburg High School, and being honored as the high school basketball coach tallying the most basketball wins when he retired in 1984. Next up for the Burghers is an away game against Granville Friday, Dec. 6, beginning at 7 p.m. ■
