Grand opening announces changes coming By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STA FF W RITER

PLATTSBURGH | Plattsburgh’s Hudson Headwaters Family Health Center hosted its grand opening ceremony June 5. The building, which officially opened to patients in February, is one of now 18 health centers in upstate New York and features 20 exam rooms, two treatment rooms, two consultation rooms and two behavioral health rooms, offering primary care for all ages. Hudson Headwaters in Plattsburgh is now able to access Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital services such as the Diagnostic Center and Blood Donor Center for the convenience of patients. The center was funded by a $3.6 million in Capital Restructuring Financing Program (CRFP) grant from New York state. Hudson Headwaters has been in northern Clinton County for seven years now, and in the Adirondacks for more than 35. Its comprehensive services include primary care, urgent care, pediatrics, women’s health, behavioral health, dentistry and laboratory services and imaging.

At the grand opening ceremony was CEO of the Hudson Headwaters Health Network Dr. Tucker Slingerland, who has been with Hudson Headwaters for nine years as a family physician, and still continues to see patients. » HHHN Cont. on pg. 5

Fighting hunger with games

By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STA FF W RITER

PLATTSBURGH | The Town of Plattsburgh hosted its first ever “Hunger Games” to raise money for charity June 8. The event included an obstacle course for those who signed up, as well as a day filled with food and live music. Each person who showed up was to bring a can or box of nonperishable food to help fight hunger in Plattsburgh. The opening ceremonies began at noon, where City of Plattsburgh Mayor Colin Read was there to introduce Executive Director for the Strand Center Theatre for the Arts Bob Garcia and Hunger Games Chairperson Tara Powers, who put the event together. “It’s a lot of fun for everybody,” Powers said

The winning team, Ninja Academy, with a time of 11 minutes and 21 seconds, donated $1,000 to Stop Domestic Violence of Behavioral Health Services North; the secondplace team, Thunderstruck, with a time of 14 minutes and 32 seconds, donated $500 to Healthy Families of NY of Behavioral Health Services North; and the third-place team, District 518, with a time of 14 minutes and 45 seconds, donated $250 to Joint Council for Economic Opportunity. Each of the top three teams were also awarded trophies from Della Auto Group, and the event was sponsored by NBC5, WOKO, The Buzz, Discover Plattsburgh Foundation and Noon Rotary Club of Plattsburgh. When the “Hunger Games” awards ceremony was finished, the rest of the afternoon became about relaxing. Available were beer and wine tents, craft beer provided by Oval Craft Brewing, and trucks with food from local restaurants. Taylor Lavalley & The Intangibles as well as Glass Onion played live at the event. For next year’s “Hunger Games,” Powers promised an event that will be “this and so much more.” The obstacle course will also take over the entire Oval field, rather than just a portion of it, making it longer and harder for those competing. ■

DONATIONS

At the awards ceremony, when the games had ended, the top three teams that won the obstacle course were awarded money, funded by the University of Vermont Health Network, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, to donate to one of the three charities sponsoring the “Hunger Games.”

The City of Plattsburgh’s “Hunger Games” event included 21 teams that competed in challenging yet silly courses to raise awareness for hunger in Plattsburgh. The archery sector remained on par with the “Hunger Games” books’ and movies’ theme. Photo by Sarah Elizabeth Morris

The first sector, “Zorb Central,” included zorbs — giant, air-filled balls with inner capsules — for the contestants to wriggle into. The objective was to run, while inside the ball, to the next sector, where they were to take their shoes off. In that sector, “Surf City,” once their shoes were off, the contestants had to put on flippers, goggles and a rubber ducky float around their waist. They had to run backward to sector three, the “Booty Bounce,” which had bouncy balls with handles for the contestants to sit on and bounce to sector four, all with pantyhose on their heads. Sector four, “Archery Boot Camp,” the last one before the contestants had to dance and skip with a pool noodle and do the entire thing again the other way, included shooting three plastic arrows at a target, whether they hit it or not.

FLW Tour returns, boosts local economy Fishing competition gives back to environment and community

BAIT FOR BUSINESS

Last held in 2016, the event to end the six-lake tour is returning to Plattsburgh hoping to appreciate the local environment and give a boost to the local lake-shore economy. According to the Adirondack Coast 2017 economic-impact study of Adirondack Coast Bass Fishing Tournaments, responders stayed an average 4.93 nights during each stay with an average daily spending total of $250.48, 75 percent of which used commercial lodging facilities. The tour participants supported 41.3 full-time jobs, mainly within the food service and lodging industry in Clinton County and contributed a total of approximately $3,291,710 to the regional economy.

By Windsor Burkland CONTRIBUTING W RITER

PLATTSBURGH | The Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) 2019 Tour presented by T-H Marine will come to a close at the Lake Champlain finale, which will reel in anglers, economic and environmental impacts and big fish to Clinton County June 27 to 30 at the Plattsburgh City Marina.

FLW Communications Specialist Brian Johnson said the event is expected to bring about $1.9 million to the area, and gives anglers and FLW staff a way to give back to the local community. “We’re always gracious to be invited into communities,” Johnson said. “We’re coming in, using resources, and we’re fishing waters that belong to the city and people there. We want to give back in any way possible.”

CASTING AND CONSERVATION

Through a partnership with the Lake Champlain Sea Grant (LCSG) program, the FLW makes sure that there are resources in place for participants to be environmentally conscious. The main goals are to fight against invasive species and make sure the lake’s bass population remains healthy. Boat-washing stations, educational boards at registrations and livewells, which help keep the fish cool, oxygenated and stress-free when finally released back into the water, are some of the systems the FLW has in place currently. Johnson said the FLW also works with local authorities to make sure everything is up to date. “Conservation is the name of the game,” Johnson said. “We want to keep those fish healthy and in the best condition possible. We want to treat these fisheries with the utmost care, and have a low impact on them.”

REELING IN RESULTS

Registration is June 26 at the Crete Memorial Civic Center from 11:30 to 1 p.m. Take-off is at 6:30 a.m. every morning; weigh-in is from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. the first two days and 4 to 8 p.m. the last two days. The family-friendly Outdoor Expo is every day at 2 p.m. The expo allows community members to come out and enjoy food, giveaways and opportunities to meet and interact with professional anglers. Johnson said 2016 winner Scott Martin will be returning to the water this year, in the hopes of going “back-to-back.” “Bring your coolers and your lawn chairs, and come out and enjoy the day with us,” Johnson said. ■

» HHHN Cont. from pg. 1 Since its opening in February, the Plattsburgh Hudson Headwaters Family Health Center has exceeded expectations in regard to its services to the community members. “We knew that this building would be a hit, but we are really, really impressed with how many patients have come here and its growth,” Slingerland said in an interview with The Sun. “At this point, we’re seeing more than a thousand patients a month. We’re super happy that these are people that have been attracted to the building and what we offer here and the services nearby offered by CVPH.” Also at the grand opening to speak included the COO of Hudson Headwaters Network Dominick Bizzarro, President and COO of Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital and President of Alice Hyde Medical Center Michelle LeBeau, and Town of Plattsburgh Supervisor Michael Cashman, as well as representatives from the offices of Congresswoman Elise Stefanik and State Assemblyman Billy Jones. “Right now, we’re seeing historic investments in many arenas of our community that we can be very proud of,” Cashman said in his speech. “Unless you have a community that can wake up every day and feel comforted by the fact that no matter where you are on the age spectrum that you’re going to have the services and affordable services to be able to maintain a lifestyle of activity and good health. We’re really proud that the Town of Plattsburgh now becomes part of that triangle of health in our greater region.” The Hudson Headwaters Health Network is located in

the middle of the CVPH plaza specifically for the convenience and comfort of the patients. Connected via hallway, the CVPH plaza services available to patients include H.K. Freedman Renal Center, Women’s Imaging, Diagnostic Center, Kevin J. Carroll Ambulatory Surgery Center, North Country Regional Blood Donor Center, Wound Care Center and Gastroenterology Associates of Plattsburgh.

PROGRESSIVE ACTIONS

On behalf of the office of Stefanik, a congressional certificate was presented to Slingerland and LeBeau to commemorate the grand opening. Bizzarro then ended the talking session explaining the progressive actions the Plattsburgh Hudson Headwaters is taking for the convenience of its patients. “If you’re a patient of this health center and a user of our portal … we’re going to be giving patients the ability to schedule appointments, certain types of appointments, new patients especially, follow-up visits and safe visits for patients who have an acute problem that needs to be addressed,” Bizzarro said. The Plattsburgh Hudson Headwaters, which is located along the bus route, is open Monday/Tuesday/Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday/Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. There are currently three physicians, three nurse practitioners and one physician assistant on site, supported by RN and LPNs to make a total of 22 on staff. This summer, the group is planning on adding four additional primary care providers. ■

There will be mutual aid support groups available to people coming.” Lastly, it was announced that the CVPH Summer Concert Series will be starting Thursday, June 13, at 6 p.m. The concerts will take place every Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the CVPH front lawn and will include Mr. Ding-A-Ling, local ice cream man. The Explorer Program was created by Miller as a way to get kids off the streets, away from drugs and in a safe place with authoritative figures who can work with the teens to prevent drug use. To get into the Scouts of America-run program, one does not need to be a Scout. The program accepts people around Clinton County and other school districts between the ages of 14 and 18 and educates them on the community, takes them out on patrol and challenges the stigma of both drug abuse and police. One thing Miller made clear is that the Plattsburgh Community Center is not looking to arrest substance users, but instead help them. Miller said the acceptance of substance use in the area is the first step to destroying the stigma. “People that have addictions are members of our community, and we all need to accept that,” Miller said. “If we » NAmTrans Cont. from pg. 1 Upstate New York and Canada have worked closely together in terms of free trade, trade barriers and technology over the years. ‘CULTURAL ATTITUDE’

During the Alcohol Abuse in the North Country segment, Director of Community Services in Clinton County Richelle Gregory and Director of Community Services in Franklin County Suzanne Lavigne spoke on the effects of alcohol in the North Country. According to the slides that were presented at the meeting, the North Country population of adults who binge drink or end up in the CVPH emergency room with an alcohol-related injury exceeds the New York state average. “Attitudes culturally and locally is contributing to the issue,” Gregory said. “This cultural attitude that drinking is very largely a function of most social activities in northern New York … by far we are leading the state in some of our alcohol members.” To end the meeting, Connie Willie of the Champlain Valley Family Center brought up a few events that the CVFC will be hosting, including the grand opening of the new Champlain Valley Family Center Recovery Campus on Friday, July 19. The center is searching for volunteers to be on staff, which will be 100 percent made up of peer specialists, or people who have gone through recovery themselves

portation between the countries, and stronger border control between Canada and the U.S., while also helping businesses expand outside its borders, where, according to Stefanik, 95 percent of the global marketplace is. “Canada, as we know, is our nation’s number one trading partner, closest economic ally, and

a true partner for all the businesses in my district,” Stefanik said in her remarks. “Fostering, maintaining and continuing to grow our relationship is critical to the success of both of our nations … my office is 100 percent committed to strengthening this relationship.” Recently, the steel and aluminum trading tariffs between Canada-U.S.-Mexico have been lifted, which Stefanik said will strengthen the relationship between the U.S. and Canada, and will especially benefit the 21st district, the home of the oldest aluminum smelter in the world. “New York and Quebec share a strong commitment to the aerospace and transportation equipment centers with many cross border operations and supply chains,” Stefanik said. “I am committed to representing the companies in the aerospace and transportation equipment cluster in my district.”

speech. “Although other tradeless views remain in the U.S. administration, including the southwood lumber and steel structures issues, our proximity facilities the many partnerships that unite us and our long track record demonstrates the success of our cross-border prosperity.” According to Girault, this “respect” between our two nations has benefited the business community. New York is Quebec’s first export market and second-largest trading partner in the U.S. because of the flourishing free trade market between the two. It also creates direct and indirect jobs that focus on trading in both Canada and the United States. “The aerospace and transportation industries are real drivers of Quebec’s economy growth, resulting in 25.5 billion dollars in revenues in 2018 alone,” Girault said. “Together, they represent more than 825 companies.” To end the event, Vice President of Political Affairs and Federation Relations at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Sara Armstrong presented the Spirit of Enterprise Award to Stefanik for, “Her support of pro-business policies in the year 2018.” This is based on an evaluation of each congressperson’s votes during the year 2018 on certain policies. To view how each congressperson voted, visit the “How They Voted” congressional voting records at govtrack.us. ■

‘LONG TRACK RECORD’

Nadine Girault then approached the stand after Stefanik, starting her speech by stating her opposing views on tariffs. The North America Free Trade Agreement, she believes, has made New York one of Quebec’s main economic partners in the United States. “Today we can all celebrate the beginning of a back-to-business era,” Girault said in her

PetAPalooza Becoming a Climate returns Smart Community Curtis Lumber to host pet adoption day and fair

PLATTSBURGH | The 10th-annual Curtis Lumber PetAPalooza pet adoption day and pet fair will be held Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. across select retail stores located throughout New York state. Each store will host multiple pet adoption/rescue groups with cats, dogs, rabbits and birds. Many adoption rates will be lowered for the day. Pet service providers in attendance, including local veterinarians, groomers, pet sitters and trainers, will offer discounts off their services. Attendees may take advantage of a low-cost microchipping clinic and enjoy raffles, food and more. Last year’s event resulted in more than 250 animals finding forever homes. Curtis Lumber’s president and owner, Jay Curtis, and wife, Kendra, said they are excited to host this annual event. Locations include: • 460 Big Bay Road, Queesbury: 518-792-8601 • 140 Tom Miller Road, Plattsburgh: 518-561-2691 • 1134 State Route 86, Ray Brook: 518-891-2216 For more information, visit clpetapalooza or facebook. com/clpetapalooza. ■

Seven appointed to city Sustainability Task Force

PLATTSBURGH | The City of Plattsburgh Common Council appointed seven individuals to serve on the newly created City Sustainability Task Force (CSTF) at the June 6 Common Council meeting. Councilor Rachelle Armstrong was appointed to serve as the first coordinator of the CSTF. The task force will be focused on examining city operations and setting goals of reducing resource and energy consumption. This is part of the city’s efforts toward becoming a New York State Climate Smart Community (CSC). The following appointments were made: Armstrong (coordinator), Joel Chase (MLD), James Welch (Building Inspector’s Office), Ethan Vinson (community development), Scott Buffett (college and industry), Lisa Bergmann (Climate Smart Coalition) and Wouter Rietsema (nonprofit). The CSTF, comprised of both members of city depart-

ments and the community, will work in conjunction with the newly formed CSC Coalition of local environmental groups toward taking actions to reduce the city’s carbon footprint and to conserve energy, as well as broader community initiatives. These future actions would then be awarded points that allow the city to become a state CSC-certified community. Further designations can be achieved including bronze, silver and gold levels by continuing to earn points past the certification threshold. In April, Mayor Colin Read released his 58+ point plan for energy and economic resiliency and the Common Council passed a resolution to sign the New York State Climate Smart Community Pledge. The CSTF’s work will build upon these two initiatives. The 58+ point plan is focused on reducing power cost, providing incentives for residents to reduce their energy usage and ensuring the city is at the leading edge of energy innovation. Officials said a major goal they hope to attain is to become a 100 percent renewable energy city, a feat achieved only by a small number of cities across the country. More information on the task force can be found at cityofplattsburgh.com. ■

A tribute to dads

There are many words in many languages to describe what it means to be a father. By Dan Alexander Dad, poppa, daddy, • PUBLISHER • pa, pops, poppy or whatever you called your father, they all have rich and meaningful sentimental importance. I know in my case, while I always had great respect for my father, I never really appreciated what it meant to be a father until I held my son for the first time. Suddenly, a light went off when I realized the awesome responsibility I had just undertaken. It also became clear that the respect I thought I had for my father was never really enough. The sacrifices he made, the headaches I created for him and the times when I thought I knew better all came rushing back as I looked at the little life now in my arms. Moms are great, but fathers mean so much to the family, especially in the formative years. Having a father around while growing up was so important to my life, and now seeing my son be a great father to his children, I fully understand the importance and joys of fatherhood. While society has changed today, the thought of father as the breadwinner and protector of the family is still the image and role most of us value the greatest. Studies show time and time again how significant a father’s influence is in the life of his children. It’s too easy on Father’s Day to make a quick phone call, drop him a card or an email. But I can tell you when he’s gone, you’ll realize you’ve missed an important opportunity to share things with him that only you can do not just on Father’s Day but any day. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about Dad, who has been gone nearly 30 years now. So make the most of this day to let dear old dad know how important he has been in your life. Share a personal story of something special he did years ago that made an impact on your life. Let him know you love and appreciate him in spite of the times he made you mad or was overly strict. On behalf of all of us here at The Sun, we extend the warmest wishes to all fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers and soon-to be-fathers. We thank you for the job you do, raising our future citizens and sharing with them the values of love and the importance of family. ■

The warm weather is finally here and for many of us in the North Country, that means spending more time outdoors. For By Billy Jones many families, all-terrain • GUEST COLUMNIST • vehicles are an important part of the North Country way of life. Whether they are used to tend our farms, access hunting camps and backcountry or just have fun on the trails, the North Country would not be the same without them. This past month, I had the opportunity to learn more about the sport, clubs and vehicles when I joined the Palmer Brook Sportsman’s Club for a ride. I always enjoy the opportunity to get out and enjoy the North Country’s recreational trails on an ATV, and I would encourage riders to get involved in their local ATV club to learn more about opportunities to ride in their community. In Clinton County, there is the OutbackRiders Club, Inc., which promotes responsible riding so that there are more opportunities to enjoy these recreational vehicles. In Franklin County, there is the Franklin All-Terrain Riders, Inc., which has been working to promote ATV safety and show that ATVs and automobiles constitute a very small percentage of area motor-vehicle accidents. Trump undercutting role of Congress

Editor’s note: This letter refers to Dan Alexander’s column, “Thoughts From Behind the Pressline: Hatred leads us nowhere,” which appeared in the June 1 edition of The Sun. To the Editor: At a time when the concept of “fake media” and media bias has become so rampant, I would like to suggest to Mr. Alexander that he take a lesson from media sources like NPR and PBS which bend over backward to present the news as evenhandedly as possible. Relabeling congressional oversight as “hate the president” does very little to inform the discussion of the public affairs that a newspaper like The Sun seeks to cover. President Trump, alone among recent candidates for the office of president of the United States, has resolutely refused to release his tax returns. Should we turn a blind eye to his attempts to undercut the constitutional role of the Congress to oversee the executive branch?

‘Abortion is murder’

To the Editor: Simply put, abortion is murder. It is the killing of a baby growing inside the womb of its mother. What is being killed is a human being. It is not a malignant growth that needs to be removed. Lawyers and judges can make abortion legal, but they cannot change the fact it is murder. - Peter Klein, Indian Lake ■

Threat to America is internal

To the Editor: America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves. This quote is attributed to Abraham Lincoln. The truth of this quote has been illustrated by the Russian story of the last three years. Forget Russia. It is time to look at Washington to reveal the enemy from within. I believe the real story is treason, the intended coup of the government. It was not a coup d’etat because the design was to be without violence, a quiet takeover orchestrated by the ex-president and his cohorts. I do not believe Clapper or Brennan and their underlings have the smarts to plan and carry out what we have been watching beyond the cover-up. The intimidation started early when Obama lectured the Supreme Court justices at his inauguration. It continued when the Supreme Court followed his instructions

with the Obama-care tax issue. Then he did all he could to disrupt the law and order in the land by his actions with anti-law enforcement activities in incidents nationwide. The IRS was weaponized along with other departments of the government. The attorney generals of the Obama era were highly complicit! Obama set up intelligence sharing to impede leak detection. The back-up plan laid out in McCabe’s office was the distraction of the collusion “plan” which has been ongoing now over two years. It was to hide the real intent of what was to happen so no light is shed on those behind the conspiracy. The redacted documents need to be released now and those involved need to be brought to justice otherwise our country will not survive. I believe all the collusion investigators were complicit including Mr. Mueller. Take off the blinders and see the truth. Judgment is coming very soon. - Carl Thomas, Stony Creek ■

Likewise, if Mr. Alexander has concerns about state property taxation, would it not be better for him to do some research into “the formula provided by the state” instead of adding his own admitted paranoia to a discussion already subject to misleading political rhetoric over tax cuts that seem to generate more taxes from those it was advertised to help? If his intent is to act as a voice of the Republican Party, I think his favoritism toward Elise Stefanik would adequately fulfi ll that intent. - Richard Barney, Ticonderoga ■

from taking advantage of our trail system. It’s time that New York state catches up and finds ways to help ensure these vehicles are properly used and registered, while simultaneously protecting and expanding our trail system. With that in mind, ATV Safety Week was June 1-9. This serves as a reminder to re-familiarize ourselves with the safety rules and regulations for driving all-terrain, side-by-side and utility vehicles. Making sure we use these vehicles safely helps to keep everyone in the North Country safe. The Franklin County Recreational Trails Association offers many helpful tips on how to be safe on every ride. Additionally, they remind us to never drink and drive and the dangers that come from exceeding the limit of riders meant for each vehicle. I ask riders to get in touch with their local association if they have questions or concerns on safe riding practices. If you do your part to maintain the integrity and safety of our trail systems, I’ll continue doing my part in Albany to protect the rights of North Country residents and ATV/UTV riders. As always, my door is open. If you have questions or comments about this or any other community issue, please reach out to my office at 518-562-1986 or at JonesB@nyassembly.gov. ■

Franklin and St. Lawrence counties, there is the ATV Ruffriders Club, Inc., which seeks to improve the image of ATV riders by training both children and adults to respect the trails and other riders. However, all of these clubs have a unifying concern. Every day, more riders, individuals and families are purchasing side-by-side utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) so that they can enjoy riding together or use for utility purposes on private land. Unfortunately, most of these vehicles exceed the 1,000-pound weight limit allowed by New York state. I have proposed legislation that would both create an ATV trail fund and statewide trail system as well as increase the weight limit to 1,500 pounds. This will allow residents across the state to register their vehicles and operate them legally on public roads to get between trails and private lands. Opponents argue that this poses a threat to the Adirondacks, but the reality is that it is already illegal to ride any of these vehicles in forest preserves. When hikers started damaging trails, we didn’t ban them from the trails. As a state, we dedicated funding, increased staff and enacted harsher penalties to preserve the trails. Banning these vehicles would create a missed revenue opportunity for our state and preclude law-abiding citizens

1942: A very bad year Plattsburgh resident, concentration camp survivor shares story By Julie Canepa GUEST W RITER

PLATTSBURGH | The years following the German occupation of Pardubice and the ensuing war were filled with a series of small deprivations and degradations that piled on top of each other and sapped the strength of the city’s Jews. Isolated in a ghetto without walls, Vladimir Munk and his family endured discrimination, racial slurs and a growing fear of what would come next. It begs an analogy to the frog in boiling water parable: the difficulty in reacting to threats that change almost imperceptibly at first until there is no turning back.

HARDSHIPS

The war was expensive, and those who had not planned ahead were hit hard when everyday items became scarce. “Jews were not permitted to buy butter, eggs, milk and some kinds of meat,” said Munk. “I had a friend, Milan Hasek, whose parents were grocery store owners. They always sold us a little more sugar, flour

You asked me what?

It is certain that we have all asked “stupid” questions of others, but we obviously did not think they were dumb queries or we would not have posed them. I am recalling several ridiculous By Jan Gosselin • COLUMNIST • inquiries that have been posed to me, and although I did not reply with the answers quoted below, the responses certainly came to mind. After eating out in a restaurant, I was given my check indicating a balance due of $7.59. Upon handing the waiter a $20 bill along with the slip, I was asked, “Do you want change?” My response was, “Yes, please.” My subconscious response was, “You spilled my soup on the table, never returned to check on my satisfaction or refill my glass of soda. Of course I want to give you a 150 percent tip.” Many years ago, three weeks after the birth of my third child, I was asked by a complete stranger, “When is the baby due?” Needless to say, that is one body that may never be found. Okay, maybe I didn’t react violently, but I was grateful that the question was not asked by a close friend — I would have missed her! I will admit that this incident does not occur very often anymore because there are not many service stations that have an employee to pump gas. However, “back in the day,” after parking quite close to the pump, the question was invariably asked, “Do you want gas?” “Yes, please.” My internal response, “Hell no! I want an oil change, tires rotated and brake pads installed!” Walking alone into a restaurant, I am usually asked, “Just one?” As if I am to be pitied. Perhaps a kinder question would be, “One for lunch (dinner)?” I realize the individual could be waiting for others, but perhaps the employee should wait for the client to provide that information. That question would be much more comfortable for the patron who might not be happy about being just one. I have occasionally observed someone pushing a double stroller with two babies of identical size in it when a person will invariably walk up to them with their brilliant question, “Are they twins?” My mind’s response is typically, “No, they are triplets, they just leave the ugly one home!” My sister is 12 years younger than I and there was a period of time in her younger years when she or I was asked if I was her mother! In addition to feeling like I must look old for my age, the question always caused a bit too much glee and gloating for this younger sibling. However, if one waits long enough, karma will appear. I visited her place of work some time ago and she introduced me to several of her co-workers. Upon my departure, one of them questioned whether I was younger or older. My turn to smile, Judy. Not all questions incite my typical “smart- ass” thoughts. There is one query that I have been asked several times over the years by individuals in uniforms who just happen to gain my attention by driving behind me on the highway with ceremoniously flashing lights. Their typical question: “Do you know why I stopped you?” Could I respond, “Because you thought I had a box of donuts?” — of course. Will I ever? Absolutely not! Fortunately, the infractions have always been minor, and I have always been dismissed with a “warning.” My response to this interaction has always been, “Thank you, sir!” ■ — Jan Gosselin retired from NYSDOCS after 25 years of service. She lives in Plattsburgh with her husband Bob and has three daughters, three grandsons and one greatgrandson. Animals that were not sold would be destroyed. “My aunt, the widow of my father’s eldest brother, who was not Jewish, volunteered to buy Cigy and take care of him. He did not like to be away from his family and escaped her apartment several times and returned to us.” But the city was full of informers, and an unexpected search of their apartment and discovery of the dog would most certainly result in immediate deportation of the family to a concentration camp. With heavy hearts, Cigy was returned to his new owner each time and slowly got used to living there. Most Czechs sympathized with the Jews, but wearing the yellow star prevented contact between Munk and his non-Jewish friends. “Some of our so-called friends stopped talking to us,” said Munk. ”I had a schoolmate who saw me walking home and he walked on the other side of the street and started shouting at me, ‘Jew, Jew.’”

ALL WORK, NO PLAY

Every healthy person 16 or older had to work. If work could not be obtained, there would be no food ration coupons, and even worse, the risk of being sent to a hard labor camp. Fortune struck again for Munk, when he was hired by Frantisek Cerny, manager of Jiskra, a cooperative of machinists and tool makers who had just received a contract to produce radio receivers. “Cerny got permission to hire inexpensive Jewish laborers, as long as they did not come in contact with non-Jewish workers,” explained Munk. He could listen covertly to

The Germans were winning the war.

or other groceries than we were officially entitled to.” In 1942, the Haseks were the Munks’ black market suppliers of green coffee, chocolate and other forbidden items. In the summer of 1942, Karel Munk lost his job at the distillery. “Even the German treuhändler couldn’t keep a Jew employed in a managerial position any more and had to let my father go,” said Munk. “My parents had expected this and they had quietly moved most of our furniture and possessions, including books, a typewriter and paintings, from the apartment to various friends for safekeeping.” The family moved to an attic room at the home of some acquaintances in the city. “Since early spring, my mother or father and I carried shopping bags of coal from the distillery to our friend’s, the Löbls, cellar. The new attic quarters did not have a bathroom, so we used the Löbls bathtub for bathing and the coal to heat the water.” The family dog, Cigy, moved with them to the small attic apartment. “At the end of the summer, the Nazis requisitioned all Jewish dogs, cats and other domestic animals and sold them at auction in the city market place,” said Munk.

Church

Underlying every day was the knowledge that communities all over Europe were being made Judenfrei – free of Jews – by transports to various concentration camps. In late 1941, Karel Munk’s sister and her husband were deported to Minsk in Poland. “They were over 60 years old, which did not give them a good chance to survive,” said Munk. Karel’s brother Max and his wife were sent from Prague to Theresienstadt, and later to Piasky in Poland. They did not survive. A chronicle, begun by Munk’s maternal grandmother, Emilie Gesmai, remains that tells the story of what became of family members. Gesmai’s daughter, Berta, recorded events from 1939 to 1945 after her mother became blind. Sept. 9, 1942, is marked with this passage: “This was a fateful year for the whole family. Terrible persecution of the Jews.” Her siblings, Ida, Anna, Jindrich, Kamila, and their families, were sent to Theresienstadt or destinations unknown. Her mother was deported at age 78, totally blind. One sister, Helena, emigrated to the United States. The diary reports “In December 1942, the youngest child of the Gesmai Family (8th child) was deported with her family: Herminka Munkova, husband Ing Karel Munk and son Vladimir Munk.” Vladimir would never forget that cold December day. ■ — Note: Check out the June 29 edition of The Sun to continue reading Vladimir’s story. Duffield wins DII 400 hurdles championship Saranac standout earns four medals at state meet

in rested and am very happy to come away with four medals.” For Duffield, the work does not end with the state championships, as he will run in a national meet next weekend before spending his summer preparing to become a member of the track team at the University of Albany. “Monday we will do a little endurance work and keep the focus throughout the week and hopefully PR next week,” Duffield said. “The coaches are going to give me a workout plan and I am going to work as hard as I can over the summer. I want to keep my strength up before I head to college and right now I feel I am as strong as I have ever been.”

MIDDLETOWN | As Cameron Duffield crossed the finish line, he pumped his fists to each side, celebrating a goal he had worked for since seventh grade. Duffield had claimed a state championship. The Saranac senior ran the 400 hurdles in a time of 53.69 seconds June 7, winning the Division II championship race by 4.1 seconds. The following day, Duffield continued to haul in championships medals, placing second in the DII 110 hurdles in a personal best time of 14.12; then returning to run the Federation (all divisions) 110 hurdles, where he finished third with a time of 14.179, 0.002 seconds behind second place. In his final event, Duffield placed fifth in the Federation 400 hurdles, clocking in at 54.74 on a very warm day at Middletown High School. It was a weekend his coach Chris Verkey described as “the greatest performance in our school history.”

STATE TITLE

“I have been training all throughout the season for these races,” Duffield said. “It has been my goal to accomplish a first-place medal. After I hit the first six hurdles in stride I was pretty confident after that. I knew I was coming in as a top-ranked runner and I really wanted this goal and my coach wanted it for me and kept telling me I could do this.” Verkey lauded his champion hurdler for his work ethic and determination. “You do not win a state championship just at the state meet,” Verkey said. “It is the culmination of years and years of practice and working out in the weight room, working out in the cold and snow, and it is very rewarding to see Cameron do as well as he did today. He is absolutely deserving.”

A short time later, Duffield ran his final event, the Federation 400 hurdles, placing fifth. “To come back with a Division II runner-up finish in 14.12 — which was an absolute bomb of a time, is amazing,” Verkey said. “Then to come back and run a great time 30 minutes later, then 30 minutes later to run the 400 with not so fresh legs and finish fifth was an incomprehensible performance.” “It has just been a great weekend,” Duffield said. “I came

It was also a strong weekend performance for Saranac’s Rachael Woodruff, who earned a medal in the DII 2,000 steeplechase. Woodruff just missed an all-state finish in her other two events with and eighth-place finish in the DII 3,000 (15th overall, 10:15.21) and a seventh-place finish in the DII 3,200 relay with teammates Mackenzie Converse, Kennedy Ubl and Elise Lepage. “I knew it was going to be tough,” Woodruff said. “I wanted to get out there and run the best I could and if I could place well in my heat, I would have a good chance to medal.” ■

NCCS baseball, PHS softball fall in states By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

PLATTSBURGH | The Northeastern Clinton varsity baseball team and Plattsburgh High softball team both fell in state regional play last week. In the Class B baseball regional semifinals, the Cougars got on the board first as Bryan Claudio scored after stealing third and taking home on an overthrow in the second inning, but Schuylerville responded with four runs in the third and one in the fourth for a 5-1 lead. Schuylerville then put the game away with

In Plattsburgh June 8, the Hornets were only able to get three hits off Ichabod Crane pitching, falling to the top-ranked team in Class B, 18-0, in the regional finals. When your family suffers a loss, we want to help you let your friends and neighbors know. Each week we will publish a list of Death Notices at no charge. These notices will include name, date of death & birth, age, town and the name of the funeral home in charge of the arrangements. Like most newspapers, we do need to charge a small fee of $65 for a 250-word obituary which will include a picture (if supplied) in the paper. Larger sizes are also available. If the funeral home doesn’t place the obituary in The SUN you may submit an obituary by calling 518-873-6368, or you may email the Obituary to shannonc@suncommunitynews.com, and she will let you know the cost if it’s over 250 words.
