Northern Lights Track Club hosts first annual track and field event

Radio club having a field day ‘hamming’ it up Amateur radio operators are hosting event this weekend open to public By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com SARANAC — Having been a runner for the majority of his life, Matt Medeiros is looking to expand a local track club, which began with an All Comers Track and Field Meet last weekend. On June 20, runners throughout the region participated in the meet which saw racers of all ages. Matt Medeiros, who now assists his father, James Medeiros, track and cross country coach for Saranac Central School, has “stepped up” to become president of the Northern Lights Track Club. “[Mark Elmore] had the local track club; it was the

DANNEMORA — When Gary J. Donivan was a kid, amateur radio fascinated him. “I was really interested back then, but you had to learn Morse code to get an amateur radio license and I never conquered Morse code,” admitted Donivan. “So, I forgot about it.” Several years later, the Federal Communications Commission, or FCC as it is more commonly known, dropped the Morse code requirement, rekindling Donivan’s interest. “When I found that out, I took the exam and passed it,” he said with a smile. The amateur radio, or “ham radio” license, to which it is often referred, opened up many new doors for Donivan, including one

to a membership in the Champlain Valley Amateur Radio Club. “I got involved with the guys at the club and it’s just gone from there. I’ve been involved quite extensively ever since,” said Donivan, who today serves as a member of the club’s board of trustees. And, every year since he’s been a member, Donivan has joined his fellow club members participating in the annual American Radio Relay League Field Day. The twoday event, always held the last full weekend in June, is a way to test the skills of amateur radio or “ham” operators on what to do in the event of a communications emergency. That training is important, said Donivan. When called upon by the Clinton County Office of Emergency Ser-

MORRISONVILLE — A record number of people turned out for this year ’s Plattsburgh’s Relay for Life, all to support the American Cancer Society’s mission to fight cancer. On June 19, nearly 1,400 participants poured into the Clinton County Fairgrounds raising donations for the nonprofit organization which currently total more than $185,000. Three hundred survivors of the disease were at the event wearing purple shirts as proof the disease “can’t win,” as keynote speaker Gordon J. Hazel stated. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com MORRISONVILLE — Though a couple bucks can’t get you much these days, it can get you some high-quality entertainment that’s fun for the whole family — only at the Clinton County Fair. The fair will return to the Clinton County Fairgrounds Tuesday, July 21, through Sunday, July 26, celebrating its 62nd year. And, just as the fair’s tradition has been to bring events, shows and activities to wow people of all ages, it’s again focusing on being affordable, said fair manager Glenn J. Gillespie. “We try to provide as much entertainment for as little money possible,” said Gillespie. “We want people to get a lot out of their hard-earned money.” The Mega Pass has returned this year, as a means of keeping costs down for fairgoers. The pass — which went on sale June 21 and will only be available until the start of the fair — allows people admission to the fair any one day of the week and includes rides all day long. The pass is being sold at Price Chopper stores in Plattsburgh and Champlain. The price of admission to this year ’s grandstand events will also be kept at an affordable level, said Gillespie. The grandstand, which will be sponsored by Akwesasne Mohawk Casino, will kick off Tuesday with “The Legends,” a musical and comedy troupe billed as “America’s Favorite Rock & Roll Comedy Show,” along with the Champlain Valley Classic Cruisers car show with trophies for the Best of Show. Admission for that performance — sponsored by WIRY Hometown Radio and Econo Lodge Inn and Suites — will be $2. The show will be followed by fireworks at 10 p.m. On Wednesday night, the grandstand will feature a street legal truck pull, also sponsored by Eagle Country 97.5 and Budweiser. The event is back for its third year and, new this year, admission will be free. Town of Champlain Republican Party chairman Oliver M. Barie, center, recently presented Clinton County Clerk and Champlain resident John H. Zurlo with a plaque recognizing him as the local GOP’s Citizen of the Year. Zurlo was joined by his wife, Mary, for a dinner in his honor at the Champlain Knights of Columbus Hall June 19.

CHAMPLAIN — The efforts of Clinton County Clerk and Champlain resident John H. Zurlo have not gone unnoticed. During the Town of Champlain Republican Party’s annual spaghetti dinner June 19, Zurlo was recognized for his accomplishments and contributions to the town, county and surrounding area. Committee chairman Oliver M. Barie applauded Zurlo, a man whom he has known for several years and has give a great deal to the community. The committee reflected on Zurlo’s 42 years of service to the county, serving first as a Champlain town councilman, then as Clinton County Legislator for Area One and most recently as county clerk. He was also lauded for his numerous contributions to civic and nonprofit organizations, including Rotary International, Kiwanis Club International and the Knights of Columbus, among others. When the committee was deciding how to honor Zurlo, Barie said the best way they knew how was to name him their Citizen of the Year. “I have spent the majority of my week trying to contemplate a worthy ‘thank you,’ or even a worthy reward,” said Barie. “And, then I remembered what Jesus said, and I realized the only way of thanking a man like John would be to give him the world.” “The only problem is,” Barie continued, “John would look at you straight in the eyes and say

there has to be someone more deserving than him.” Barie presented Zurlo with a plaque which read “In Grateful Recognition of your Devoted Service and Outstanding Contributions to the Community.” State Sen. Elizabeth O’C. Little, R-Queensbury, was also among the dignitaries in attendance who applauded Zurlo for his career. Little, who has known Zurlo and his wife, Mary, for several years, presented him with a certificate honoring his service. “John’s done so much for the community, so much for Champlain and so much for Clinton County,” said Little. “And, to be here tonight in his presence and in your presence is really important ... He’s done a great job and I’m very proud to be able to call him a friend.” Zurlo said he was touched the party set aside the evening to honor him and that so many of his friends — nearly 200 people overall — were able to make it to the event. “I really appreciated them honoring me for my years of service working for the party and for the people of the area and the county,” said Zurlo. “I was impressed so many of my friends came to see me. I never would have expected to see so many people.” In addition to his career with the county, Zurlo was commended for his work as an educator, having served as a high school business teacher for 34 years with the Northeastern Clinton Central School District before his retirement in 1994.

Networking through your homes AC power

H

aving a computer network at home is becoming more the rule than the exception with many home networks using 802.11b/g wireless technology. Perhaps for some home networks, a wireless system accounts for the whole enchilada. Wireless 802.11b/g is a mature technology that works well, but the technology may not have the desired throughput as more and more devices are added to the network or as we try streaming video content from a media PC to the television. Of course, an upgrade to the newer 802.11n wireless standard offers faster throughput, but we cannot just buy a new router. All the devices to be used must also have updated or new wireless adapters to take advantage of the 802.11n standard. So what are the options? One option, called powerline networking, takes advantage of the existing network in nearly all homes today — AC utility power. The network signals travel across the AC power lines which are all connected at the circuit breaker panel. If the AC wiring in the house is in good shape, powerline networking is shown to work very well. It’s as simple as plugging in one device about the size of a typical AC timer in the outlet where a network connection is desired and another device near the entry point of the broadband service. Within seconds the devices “find” each

other and are ready for use; complete the connection on both sides with Ethernet cables to the network device. The cost of a simple twooutlet system is typically less than $100. A known problem with powerline networking is the use of AC filtering surge protectors. Filtering surge protectors see network signals as small ripples in the AC power and filter them out; eliminating those from the electrical path between devices should take care of that issue.

Beware of the health scams out there A

ccording to the National Institute on Aging, health scams and the marketing of unproven cures have been around for many years. Today, there are more ways than ever to sell these untested products. Sadly, older people are often the target of such scams. The problem is serious. Untested remedies may be harmful. They may get in the way of medicines prescribed by your doctor. They may also waste money. And, sometimes, using these products keeps people from getting the medical treatment they need. Health scams prey on people who are frightened or in pain. Living with a chronic health problem is hard. It’s easy to see why people might fall for a false promise of a quick and painless cure. These scams usually target diseases that have no cures, like diabetes, arthritis, and Alzheimer ’s disease. You may see ads for: • Anti-aging medications. • Arthritis remedies. If you are thinking about any new treatment, such as diet, a device, or another arthritis product, talk with your doctor first. • Cancer cures. Scam artists prey on a fear of cancer. • Memory aids. Many people worry about losing their memory as they age.

• Dietary supplements. Some vitamins may be helpful but supplements may be bad for people taking certain medicines or with some medical conditions. • Health insurance. Some companies offer coverage that promises more than it intends to deliver. Find out if the company and agent are licensed in your state. The Federal Trade Commission can help you spot fraud. The Food and Drug Administration protects the public by assuring the safety of prescription drugs, biological products, medical devices, food, cosmetics, and radiation-emitting products. New venue successful for Great Adirondack International Car Show 1st place — Frank Hentschel, Plattsburgh 2nd place — Henry Bennage, Keeseville 3rd place — James LaDue, West Chazy

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The parking lot of the Crete Memorial Civic Center was packed as the Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce held its 11th annual Great Adirondack Car Show, Craft Fair and Giant Garage Sale June 20. Jody A. Parks, executive vice president of the chamber of commerce, said the event drew more than 2,000 attendees, making it “a huge success.” “People loved the car show, craft fair, garage sale, pony rides and petting zoo, and the kids couldn’t wait to try the gigantic inflatable obstacle course provided by Good Guy Productions/Sound & Sights Entertainment,” said Parks. This year, having the event at the new venue worked out well, said Parks. “The layout was perfect, the visibility from the road brought in a lot of traffic, and everyone loved the new location,” said Parks. Teaming up with WOKO 98.9 to host the Giant Garage Sale was also a benefit for the event, said Parks. “We had more than 50 crafter/garage sale vendors this year, which made it a lot of fun,” she said. “We expect this to grow even more next year.” The following are results from judging at this year ’s show:

Use coupons and start getting paid to shop

I

t’s no secret that I love $1 sales at the grocery store. They’re one of the easiest ways to get items for free – and who doesn’t like getting something for free? For example, when a bag of frozen vegetables is on sale for $1 and I use a $1 coupon, the coupon’s value essentially “pays” for the vegetables – they’re free. But what if the frozen vegetable happens to be on sale for 75 cents and you use a $1 coupon? This is an example of what couponers call overage – and it’s one of my favorite aspects of couponing. Overage occurs when the value of your coupon exceeds the cost of the item you’re buying. If I use a $1 coupon on the 75-cent vegetables, what happens to that extra 25 cents? At checkout, most stores will apply the extra quarter to the rest of the items I purchase that day. So, if during the same shopping trip I also buy some bakery rolls for $1.25, the extra quarter of coupon overage is automatically applied to the rest of my total. In this example, after giving the cashier my $1 vegetables coupon I would owe just $1 in cash for the rolls. Overage can play a big role in reducing your total grocery bill. If I have many items in the same transaction, each with a coupon that exceeds the value of what I’m buying, I can gain several dollars of overage. That overage can be used to buy anything: fruit, vegetables, dairy or whatever I’d like. With a family of five, I can always find plenty of other items that my household needs. However, it’s important to remember that no store is going to give a shopper cash back for overage. I can’t walk into my local grocery store with that $1 coupon, buy the 75-cent vegetables and then ask for a quarter in change. It just doesn’t work that way. But because I’m also buying other items

during the same trip, coupon overage helps save money on everything else I take home. When I explain overage in my coupon classes I’m sometimes asked if this is “ripping off the store.” The answer is, No! Remember, the manufacturer that issued my $1 vegetables coupon will reimburse the store not only $1 for the full value of my coupon but also an additional 8 to 12 cents per coupon. By Jill Cataldo (Read the fine print on your coupon and you’ll find this spelled out.) So, think of your coupons as if they were cash. If I hand the cashier a $1 bill to pay for my 75-cent vegetables and $1.25 rolls, the extra 25 cents over the cost of the vegetables isn’t lost – it comes off the price of the rolls. Most stores automatically allow overage. A few reserve the right to “adjust down” the value of your coupon to the point that the item is free, but the shopper does not receive the overage. To determine how your store handles coupon overages, ask your store for a copy of its coupon policy.

Market basket down for month, up 4% for year

T

he cost of the 41 items in May came in at $95.16, down from $96.22 in April, but up from last May’s cost of $91.60. Prices decreased on produce, meats, miscellaneous, and dairy. Prices increased slightly on frozen foods and drinks and remained virtually unchanged on canned goods and breads, cereals and grains. For the year, prices were up in nearly all categories with the exception of dairy, which continued to decline. Produce saw the biggest decrease at seven percent for the month, with potatoes showing the biggest monthly decline of 15 percent. Carrots and onions were slightly down from last year ’s prices. In the frozen food department, haddock soared to $7.49 a pound and all prices were up for the year. Canned goods were only up slightly from last month but were up 15 percent from last year ’s prices, lead by increases in the price of Star Kist chunk light tuna and Green Giant peas. Meat was the only category down overall for the year, with pork chops showing the biggest decline at 24 percent. Whole frying chickens, however, were up 12 percent. Breads, cereals and grains were virtually unchanged for both the month and year, with decreases in bread prices balanced by increases in Kelloggs Corn Flakes and River rice. The miscellaneous items of Oreo cookies and vegetable oil

were 23 percent more expensive this month than May, 2008. As has been reported in the news, dairy prices continue to fall, with decreases in all prices in this category. This decrease is a continuing concern for local dairy farmers.

Senior Citizens Council planning cruise

St. Augustine’s K of C officers announced

The cost per person is $65 which includes transportation, dinner and entertainment. If interested in attending, reservations and payment are due by Monday, July 6.

PERU — St. Augustine’s Knights of Columbus Council 7273 has elected its officers for the next year, beginning July 1. Officers are grand knight Allen H. Dixon; deputy grand knight Joseph R. Purtell; chancellor Peter G. Glushko; recorder John J. Theisen; treasurer Dwane D. Bast; warden Anthony C. Andrews; advocate Peter F. Keenan; inside guard Paul L. Miller; outside guard James H. Durgan; and trustees Robin K. Bashaw, James J. McCarty, and Guy D. Banker. John T. Ryan will serve as financial secretary and Brian J. Mulcahy will serve as lecturer.

Seasonal reminder Asparagus and rhubarb are ripening in local gardens. Strawberry picking has begun. The citrus season is over, but lemons and limes are still in season. Bing cherries, mangoes and pineapple are in season, but expensive! The Market Basket is a monthly report based on a survey of 41 food items commonly purchased by consumers. The SUNY Plattsburgh Office of Institutional Research collects data for the report from four major supermarkets in the Plattsburgh area. The report is then compiled as a community service sponsored by the Technical Assistance Center and the SUNY Plattsburgh Office of Institutional Advancement.

Radio From page 1 vices, the club is able to provide communications for emergency officials in situations where other means of communication aren’t accessible, he explained. “The Ice Storm in 1998 is a perfect example,” he said. “The club was able to provide communications when other means weren’t available. If we had another emergency like that, we could be activated again to assist in communications in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties — wherever we might be needed.” The club — which has provided communications for events like the Tupper Lake Tinman Triathalon, Lake Placid Ironman Triathalon, and the Plattsburgh YMCA Y-Tri held at Point au Roche State Park — has been able to do just that with the use of an ambulance it received from CVPH Medical Center a few years ago, said Donivan. The ambulance was retrofitted with the necessary equipment to communicate with other amateur radios, essentially making it an emergency communications

vehicle. “If it came to a really drastic measure where the county needed a mobile command station, we could move it wherever they need it,” said Donivan. The ARRL Field Day — scheduled for this Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28 — is a perfect opportunity to showcase what the club can do, said club president Daniel L. Jerry, West Chazy. “The Field Day is a national weekend once a year where hams get together and simulate an emergency communications activation,” explained Jerry. “We gather together at noon on Saturday and erect antennas, set up our equipment and get on the air as fast as we can, getting in contact with other groups doing the same thing all over the country.” However, amateur radio operating isn’t all work, and this weekend’s event will show that, said Donivan. The community is greatly encouraged to come out to learn more about what can also be a fun hobby by trying out

the radios first-hand, he said. “People might find they have quite an interest in this when they try it out, especially when they’re able to talk to people in places like Europe or Australia,” said Donivan. “I’ve talked to people all over the world. It’s fun.” “We certainly invite and encourage people to come and see what’s going on,” said Jerry. The ARRL Field Day will be held just outside the village of Dannemora on Douglas Road, from noon Saturday to noon Sunday. If someone wanted to get their license either day, licensed examiners will be on-hand to administer tests as well, said Donivan. And, if they miss the test, the club offers them locally every other month in Plattsburgh, he added. For more information about the Champlain Valley Amateur Radio Club or this weekend’s ARRL Field Day, visit the club’s Web site, www.cvarc.us or contact Jerry at 572-1040 or Donivan at 492-2303.

Look to your local library (The following is a letter from Colleen Pelletier addressed to WIRY 1340 radio personality Ducky Drake. Pelletier asked to have it submitted to Letters to the Editor) Dear Mr. Drake, Every time I hear you say “is it just me…” I know you are about to expound on yet another criticism of our city. Today’s commentary (June 6) showed just how woefully undereducated you are on the role that a public library plays in our community and in communities worldwide. Even in countries that have socialism, totalitarianism, communism or monarchies as their form of government, public libraries exist. The role of the public library in our democratic community is one that is offered to all people on an equal opportunity basis. You suggested in your commentary that other libraries could pick up the slack if we were to close to save the city money. Feinberg Library at SUNY Plattsburgh is available free to students and faculty, but other people have to pay to check out books or do Interlibrary Loan. Also, you receive free Internet access only if you are a student or a faculty member and there are no computers available for general public use. We, on the other hand, provide these services to everyone, no matter who you are (and yes, this includes you Mr. Drake). You also suggested the city school libraries could be the primary library for school children. School libraries are only open when school is open. What happens when children doing homework need reference materials? Also, what happens when those same children are working on a project so specific, such as local history, that their school library does not have the resources they need? What about people who work all day and enjoy going to the library to access the Internet or find a good book, movie or magazine? School libraries and Feinberg Library do not provide general interest reading materials such as novels, magazines or, in the case of Feinberg Library, children’s picture books — nor do they provide DVDs or talking books for the patron’s enjoyment. Even if we were to give them $1 million to $2 million dollars, I doubt they could bring their collections up to the standard of our library for general reading material and Internet access because they, like us, have shrinking budgets. You also suggested that the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System could take over our job and provide all the services that we do. CEF is not open to the public and they have an extremely small staff because of that. Their primary function is to help all the small libraries in the Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties by providing them with direction and guidance in running a library. They also operate the Bookmobile in areas that have no public library or for the people who have problems accessing their public library. Senior citizens fall into this category as well some small schools in the three counties. We provide all of the services mentioned above in addition to many more, including a very popular Summer Reading Program to encourage children to read during the summer. We offer programs such as a Tai Chi class, chess club and video game days as well as a community meeting space and two art exhibits. Plattsburgh Public Library is the central library for the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System which allows us to get special funding from the state to purchase materials in the adult non-fiction category. These materials are available to anyone in the three counties with a library card from any of the member libraries. People can come to Plattsburgh Public Library to access these materials or they can request them through our Interlibrary Loan System. Patrons can access our on-line card catalog through our web site (www.plattsburghlib.org) and request items that way. We provide access to databases that we subscribe to for our patrons which can be accessed through our Web site with a library card from Plattsburgh Public Library or one of the automated member libraries. I know Mr. Drake that I have used a lot of terminology in this letter that you may not be familiar with. If you do not have your own personal dictionary in which to look up these words, may I suggest that you make good use of your local public library. You could even call them and ask them on the phone for the definitions if you couldn’t get to the library for some reason. To borrow a phrase from one of my favorite North Country people and your former co-worker, “Have a nice day and drive carefully.” Colleen Pelletier Plattsburgh

Public reminded of open house this Saturday beginning at noon CHAZY — William H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute is taking part in a new research project in conjunction with the Nutrient Management Spear Program at Cornell University, Ithaca. The project, which is funded through the Northern New York Agricultural Development Program and New York Farm Viability Institute, will consist of field trials to evaluate various manure application practices. The goal of the project is “to determine the impact of different manure application methods on nitrogen conservation, residue management, and corn crop yield,” said Cornell graduate student Anne Place, who is working with the NMSP. “Results from this research will help farmers in Northern New York determine manure incorporation practices that can maximize nitrogen utilization with minimal soil disturbance,” further explained agronomist Eric Young, who recently joined the staff at Miner Institute. Researchers are evaluating surface application of manure without incorporation into the soil, shallow incorporation of manure with an aeration tool, and chisel incorporation, and a farmer selected incorporation tool at 10 farms throughout New York. “Most farms, including the Miner Institute, selected the chisel plow as the third treatment,” said Dr. Quirine M. Ketterings, who is serving as lead investigator for the project. Place collects soil samples before and after manure applications, at planting time, at sidedress time and when the corn is harvested. The samples are tested for nitrate levels, nutrient content, moisture and soil nitrogen supply potential using the Illinois Soil Nitrogen Test. The research also includes data on soil compaction, residue coverage, late season stalk nitrate levels, and corn crop yield and quality.

“Our first year results in Northern New York were impacted by rainy weather causing saturated soil most of the spring and generally poor stands of corn at the trial field at Miner Institute,” said Place. “Although the [ISNT] indicated the soil nitrogen supply potential was high, the soggy soil conditions caused root development problems and low nitrogen availability and nitrogen uptake. The [Presidedress Soil Nitrogen Test] and late season stalk nitrate results were consistent with field observations.” In addition, a late summer storm that damaged the corn crop at the Miner Institute resulted in low crop yield data. “What we have learned so far from the Miner Institute trial is that adding nitrogen will not overcome poor growing conditions, such as early season wetness,” said Ketterings. “We expect this second year of trials will provide a new opportunity to evaluate manure application methods under different weather and field conditions.” The Miner Institute is one of 10 dairy farm trial sites located across New York State and has worked with Cornell’s Nutrient Management Spear Program since 2000. The William H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute, located at 1034 Miner Farm Road, will host an open house this Saturday, June 27, offering the public free guided tours of the facilities and demonstrations. The event, which will run from 12-4 p.m., will give the public an opportunity to learn about the latest research projects such as the partnership with Cornell University and to meet with staff and students. The open house will also feature the premiere of the institute’s new video,”Miner Institute: 100 Years and Growing,” produced by Paul Frederick Productions. For more information about the institute or this Saturday’s open house, contact Amy Bedard at 846-7121, ext. 149, or visit the institute’s Web site, www.whminer.org.

PLATTSBURGH — The city of Plattsburgh now offers a scenic view of Lake Champlain thanks to the completion of a project that's been several years in the making. City Mayor Donald M. Kasprzak hosted a grand opening of the Plattsburgh Waterfront Park on Dock Street June 19, with several dignitaries and individuals responsible for the park's development in attendance. The project was the culmination of several years of work, Kasprzak explained, and an investment of more than $5 million from various federal, state and local agencies. The development also involved connecting several parcels of waterfront property, including property which once housed a former Canadian Pacific Railway railyard. Though the project has taken since the 1990s to complete, Kasprzak said he was proud to see it finally come to fruition. “This parcel has been developed as a park to remain forever open and wild for the people of Plattsburgh, New York, and the region,” said the mayor, who emphasized the importance of such developments. “Developing

and preserving open space to benefit the general public should be a priority for all administrations and it has been for many administrations prior to me even being here today.” Kasprzak applauded the efforts of past city mayors Jack Stewart and Daniel Stewart and their administrations for getting the development to where it stands today. Daniel Stewart said he always envisioned the day would come when the city was able to take advantage of the property's location for all to enjoy. And, though many compare Plattsburgh to Burlington, Vt., he said, Plattsburgh has an advantage over its neighboring city across the lake. “Look at Burlington's waterfront park and look at this property,” said Daniel Stewart. “Tell me which one has a better view, access and ability of use for the constituency. Plattsburgh does.” “Very few cities can say they have what we have,” the former mayor continued. “And, for decades to come, people will enjoy what we started a decade ago.” Other enhancements are in discussion for the waterfront area, Daniel Stewart said, adding he will work with Kasprzak to ensure any potential improvements go forward.

SARANAC —Seventeen-year-old Marissa Horton is passionate about resolving the negative impacts overpopulation has on horses across the country. The Saranac High School senior earned the title of Senior Level Presentation Champion at the New York State 4-H Horse Public Presentation for her speech titled “Unwanted Horse.” Horton, who has been involved with 4-H for the past 11 years, gave the speech at Cornell University in Ithaca May 16, and it’s a topic which she’s very concerned about. “This is a topic I’ve always been interested in because due to our economy and some natural disasters that have occurred in different parts of our country, the number of unwanted horses is getting to be a humongous problem,” said Horton. Horton, who has competed at the state level competition for the past four years, said she spent roughly three to four months researching the topic which has been widely reported in the media. “There are unwanted horses everywhere — farms, places that house race horses and even where backyard owners just no longer want their horses,” said Horton. “This is something that’s just going to get worse if people aren’t informed about it. They won’t know what to do when this problem gets worse.” The 2007 closure of the final three remaining horse slaughterhouses in the United States have also contributed to the number of unwanted horses, said Horton. The slaughterhouses, until that time, helped keep the horse population in check. In her presentation, Horton gives proposals of how to resolve the issue, based off examples given by the American Horse Council. “Throughout the presentation I shared what they are suggesting and a couple of those things were encourag-

ing owners to do things like leasing horses to someone who doesn’t have one or donating your horses to therapeutic riding centers or colleges or contacting local rescue facilities,” she said. Now having the state title under her belt, Horton will present her speech at various 4-H exhibits, including the upcoming Clinton County Fair in Morrisonville and New York State Fair in Syracuse. The next step will be to bring her presentation to the National 4-H Horse Public Presentation in Kentucky this November. The requirement of participating in the national competition is having the most up-to-date information possible, said Horton. “I’ve been reading and researching my topic every day since [winning the state competition],” she said. “Since this problem is something that’s happening right now and is just getting worse, every single day there are more

stories and more proposals to solve this problem.” “It’s a topic that’s constantly changing and with that, my presentation has to constantly be changing with it,” she added. Horton would have actually qualified for nationals last year when she was a junior, but juniors are restricted from moving on to the national competition, she said. “You can only go when you’re a senior,” she explained. However, she now looks forward to competing in November. In order to do so, Horton said she was told there will be approximately $400-$500 in associated expenses. Those interested in making a donation toward Horton’s expenses may contact Alexa King or Darlene Medeiros at the Clinton County office of Cornell Cooperative Extension at 561-7450.

Clinton County residents recognized for volunteer activities ALBANY — Joan Riani and Naomi Bradshaw, both of Plattsburgh, were recognized by the New York State Office for the Aging director Michael Burgess during the Senior Citizens’ Day festivities May 6 at the governor ’s mansion. Riani and Bradshaw were among 100 or so older New Yorkers and their families who were saluted by Gov. Paterson for their efforts to enhance the lives and wellbeing of others in their communities. The theme for the day was “Empowering Communities through Civic Engagement and Volunteerism.” Paterson has declared May as Older Americans month in NYS. It is the month set aside across the nation to honor older adults. Senior Citizens’ Day is an annual event organized by NYSOFA to recognize outstanding older New Yorkers who have been nominated by the county Offices for the Aging directors and staff for having made a difference in their communities. “There are three million New Yorkers who volunteer every year for different services, but what you may not know is that 680, 000 senior citizens devote some 50 million hours of service to people in their community. Today we’re honoring 100 of them for their outstanding service,” Paterson said. Riani is a retired elementary school teacher who spe-

Momentum Track Club,” James Medeiros explained of the former Beekmantown Central School track coach. “He’s now moved out of the area and the club kind of disbanded.” However, both Matt and James Medeiros explained

two local runners, Sherod Luscombe and Willy Watkins decided to begin NLTC nearly five years ago, but have since looked to someone else to continue the club. “That’s when Matt stepped up,” James

Medeiros said. “I didn’t really want Matt to kind of go into this by himself. Not that he can’t handle it ... but I’ve been around and experience counts. Anything I can do to help him, I will, but he calls the shots.” Matt Medeiros admits the new role has been stressful, but in the long run he can see the benefits. “To see people out there doing stuff they want to do and have fun doing it; if we can put on events like that more and more, we’ll grow as a sport, which will be good,” he explained. Matt Medeiros’ first step in growing the sport of track and field was to host the All Comers meet, which raised $150 toward the club. “Since [Luscombe and Watson] formed [the club], it’s been pretty much road events,” Matt Medeiros said. “And, I’m trying to get more track involved. Expand it so it’s not just road running.” For the event, Matt Medeiros put together races which may not be typically seen during a regular track and field meet, including special events for children and a distance medley relay in which four people run a

different distance. “When I put the event schedule together I put some distances that you might not normally see on an outdoor track and maybe just get some more people,” he explained. “But the [fivekilometer] was the big event that most people wanted to do, so next year that’s definitely going to be in there for sure. Some of the other events might not be.” One of the goals of the All Comers meet was to get families involved, said Matt Medeiros, as well as increase membership for NLTC. “This area has got talent and it just needs to be tapped,” he said.” “As people get out of high school, get out of college, and they’ve done track and cross country, they’re looking for an outlet to have something to train for, because they’re still athletes,” James Medeiros said. “Not everyone’s going to go play in the softball league, or the basketball league. It just doesn’t work that way. Running is that type of sport that you can continually do and not worry whether or not you’re going to make a team or not.” If interested in becoming a member of NLTC, visit www.nlrunners.com or call Matt Medeiros at 524-1269. “There’s a lot of naturals in this club. It just needs to grow,” Matt Medeiros said. “It’s going to take awhile, but you got to start somewhere.”

Relay From page 1 Throughout the rest of his speech, Hazel gave uplifting thoughts about cancer, including how he laughs at cancer every night when he goes to bed. “When you have cancer and you can laugh about it, do it,” Hazel urged. “Do it and save your worry.” Hazel added he didn’t find cancer to be funny, but because it gives people enough worry, people should “let it give you some laughs for a change.” “Laughter is good for the heart. It’s good for the mind, body. It’s good for the soul,” he said. “So, we need to laugh more.” Plattsburgh’s Relay for Life chairman Mark Brown Jr. said Hazel is among other survivors who speak every year during the annual event. “Every year we have a survivor speaker,” Brown explained. “Somebody whose been through it, who can offer some words of encouragement and can relate more easily to all of those people wearing purple shirts.” Brown added it is the people who wear the

purple shirts, who people are most excited to see. “They’re the reason that we know what we’re doing matters,” he said. “Because if it didn’t matter, and it wasn’t helping, our survivor counts wouldn’t be increasing every year.” In the end, Brown found this year ’s Relay for Life to be a huge success. There were 103 teams, 100 more survivors than last year, and Plattsburgh reached its goal of 261 registrants for the CPS3 cancer prevention study. “It’s become such a huge event; there’s practically no one in the community that doesn’t help,” Brown said. “The thousands of people that showed up that day to come to the event and raised money, who donated money, without them we wouldn’t be at where we’re at right now.” American Cancer Society community executive Joan Brown said she expects the amount raised to surpass $200,000 after all corporate sponsors and donations come in.

Please release me Stafford Middle School students from LaShauna Quarles’ 7th grade science classes recently released salmon they raised from eggs into the Saranac River. The salmon release was the culmination of a large service learning project all 7th grade science students participated in throughout the school year. The students are seen here with Don Lee of Trout Unlimited, an organization dedicated to the conservation of fisheries at the local, state and national levels. Photo submitted by Karen McCarthy

18 - CLINTON TODAY

SATURDAY June 27, 2009

Record brook trout taken on Raquette Lake W hen Tom Yacovella peered over the side of his 12-foot Sea Nymph at the potential recordsetting brookie below, he said a quick prayer. “I said, ‘God, just let me get this one in the boat and I promise I’ll be good,’” he said with a laugh. Minutes later, Yacovella’s prayers were answered as he eased the 5-pound, 4-ounce brookie to the net. At just 21-inches, the football-shaped female had a massive girth of 15 inches. He caught the monster June 7 on Raquette Lake in 24 feet of water on a three-and-ahalf-inch Rapala. Yacovella described the fight as “vicious” and said he is still amazed he was able to boat the fish by himself. The fish has been certified by the state and appears to have broken the former state record set by Jesse Yousey in 2006 by five ounces. An official state announcement is pending. While Yacovella has 52-plus years of brook trout fishing experience under his belt, he said he never thought he’d hold one of the most coveted freshwater records in the state. In fact, he didn’t set out that spring day to set a record — only beat his personal best of a four-pounder. But, as fate would have it, the Utica-based wildlife artist and avid outdoorsman managed both. For Yacovella, it was the ultimate culmination of a lifelong love affair with native brookies. “I’m still in shock, it seems surreal,” Yacovella said. “I absolutely love brook trout. I think they are the purest strain in the Northeast.” Although humble about the feat, Yacovella is most certainly deserving of the big fish. Those who know him are

well aware of his attention to detail — a fact evident in his artwork as well as his outdoor pursuits. In a recent discussion about the record fish, Yacovella quoted French chemist Louis Pasteur, who said “chance favors the prepared mind.” “In other words, the harder you work at something, the luckier you get,” Yacovella said. “Sure, there is luck involved, but the more prepared you are the better your chance of success.” From that perspective, Yacovella is a student of the brookie. From the conditions of the day to line weight and color, Yacovella left little to chance. He chose to fish June 7 “because there was a slight ripple and it was overcast,” and because “the black flies were at their worst.” On smaller ponds, Yacovella runs the age-old favorite of a Lake Clear Wabbler and a worm. On larger water, like Raquette, he prefers a minnow imitation. He runs 6-pound test to a three-way swivel, with a pencil-lead sinker pulling it down and a 48-inch, 4-pound leader to a floating Rapala. “I feel that keeps the lure tracking straight and gives it the most realistic action,” he said. Because Yacovella runs such a light leader, he constantly checks for frays and changes them often. He prefers steelhead rods of 9-feet or longer with a fast-action tip, to ensure the fish is fighting the pole and not the reel or line — and relies on back reeling big fish instead of his drag. Finally, Yacovella studies thermoclines, and intentionally weighted his Rapala that day to run at 24 feet — above the lakers and below the smallmouths. It was a combination the big brookie found irresistible. Ironically, when the brookie was being certified by Dave

Tom Yacovella of Utica shows the 5-pound, 4-ounce, 21-inch brook trout he caught from Raquette Lake June 7. The fish has been certified and a state record announcement is pending. Erway, the fisheries biologist in the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Utica office, a three-inch minnow was found in the fish’s gullet. “I told my buddies I intentionally matched the hatch,” Yacovella said with another quick laugh. To be certified for a state record, a brook trout must be dissected by a state biologist like Erway who counts its pyloric caeca — or the finger-like projections in the small intestines. Brookies have between 20-55, splake between 65-90 and lakers between 95-200. Yacovella’s fish had 37, making it easily certifiable. While Yacovella has been fishing Raquette for years, he readily admits the number of brookies he’s taken there are few. Still, he held no doubt Raquette had the potential to produce a slammer — he’d seen evidence of that on a past ice fishing trip. So, he intentionally targeted the species, and said he was content to wait all day if need be, which he very nearly did. The trip began at 5:30 a.m. and Yacovella’s fish hit at 3:30 in the afternoon. It was his only hit of the day. “In my mind, anything that gets that big is either lucky or selective, so you have to be prepared to put in your time,” he said. Other photographs of Yacovella’s trophy fish can be seen on his Web site, www.tomyacovella.com.

John Gereau is managing editor of Denton Publications and an avid outdoorsman. He can be reached at johng@denpubs.com.
