Cancer survivor rallies fellow hikers to climb Armstrong Mountain By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com
Nancy LaBaff, a cancer survivor from Canton, recently organized a hike of Armstrong Mountain in Keene Valley to honor cancer survivors and the memories of individuals who have lost their battles with cancer. Those who participated in the hike were, from left, Jean Ryan, Jack Coleman, Terry Clemons, Colleen Kaulfuss, Nancy LaBaff, Brian Yourdon, Lori Clark and Cindy Kuhn. Photo submitted by Jean Ryan
KEENE VALLEY — When overcoming a mountainous obstacle, one woman has found the only way to keep moving forward is by tackling another — especially if that obstacle is a mountain. Canton resident Nancy LaBaff has been hiking since 2003, when she overcame her two-year-long battle with thyroid cancer. She’s taken on several mountains since receiving her clean bill of health, and most recently brought along a group of people that included some North Country residents. “When I got into hiking, I started meeting people and some of them had stories of either their husband, their wife, their sister or whoever that has either survived or lost their
battle with cancer,” said LaBaff. Through the people she met on hikes in the Adirondack Mountains and through Adirondack High Peak Forums, an on-line discussion board for hikers, LaBaff was motivated to organize a hike of Armstrong Mountain for people who were either cancer survivors or somehow else affected by the life-threatening disease. “We all know the pain that cancer can cause. Cancer affects everybody,” LaBaff said of her reason for organizing the hike. “These people and myself included have had people they love that have been afflicted or who have died from cancer.” The hike gave people like Jean Ryan of Peru the opportunity to share stories of how cancer has affected their lives. Ryan lost a sister to cancer and said she has several

Generosity of local business not lost on one local family Saranac woman nominates Tangles Hair Salon for national recognition By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Though they didn’t get to the final round of a national contest recognizing the good deeds of small businesses, the owners of Tangles Hair Salon are still winners in Wanda McIntyre’s book. The Saranac woman nominated businessowners Bob Whittington and Jon Gerry for “Shine A Light,” a contest sponsored by American Express and NBC Universal. The contest, which has been narrowed down to the top three nominations, was what McIntyre thought would be the perfect way to honor the commitment the two men have to their customers. “There’s so much competition out there, even though they didn’t win it was nice to get the story out there about how nice they are and how they help people,” she said. McIntyre speaks from personal experience. The single mother of two first met
Whittington and Gerry after reading an article in the Clinton County Free Trader Today about how the two strive to help the less fortunate in their community through their business. McIntyre was interested in whether or not they could help her 13-yearold daughter, Breanna, make her own wish come true. “All she wanted for Christmas was a ponytail,” said McIntyre. “I could find a way to try to give her anything else, but I just didn’t know how to give her that.” McIntyre’s daughter suffers from ectodermal dysplasia, a genetic disorder which can result in the inability to properly grow hair, fingernails and toenails and have severe skin irritations, among other symptoms. The condition is one that has mainly manifested in poor hair growth with Breanna, said her mother, who also lives with ectodermal dysplasia. When McIntyre contacted Tangles, with-
Bob Whittington, left, and Jon Gerry, owners of Tangles Hair Salon in Plattsburgh stand with Breanna McIntyre of Saranac. The two helped Breanna receive a new look using hair extensions. Their kindness led to Breanna’s mother, Wanda McIntyre, nominating them for a national contest recognizing the good deeds of small businesses.

Police searching for culprits of ATM thefts PLATTSBURGH — New York State Police in Plattsburgh and Lewis are currently investigating a series of commercial burglaries in which the suspects have stolen the portable ATM machines located in each of the establishments. The dates of the thefts range from late August to Sept. 30. The first theft occurred at 12:21 a.m. Aug. 23 at the M&M Grocery Store, located at 933 Norrisville Road, in the town of Peru. There, an ATM machine valued at $2,899 containing an undisclosed amount of currency was stolen. The second theft occurred at 3:19 a.m. Aug. 29, at Exit 34 Sunoco, located at 271 State Route 9N, in the town of Ausable. Suspects gained entry by breaking a door and attempted to remove the ATM machine but were unable due to it being secured to the floor by bolts. Money was stolen from the machine with approximately $2,000 in damage to the door and ATM machine.
On Sept. 28, the Cobble Hill Inn, located at 7432 State Route 9, in the town of Elizabethtown, reported a burglary in which the suspects entered through a side door and stole an ATM machine valued at $2,500 and the money inside the machine. The ATM was secured to the floor by lag bolts but the suspects were able to remove the ATM from the floor. The burglary was called in at 10:29 a.m. Most recently, Rod’s Grocery, located at 2499 State Route 9N, in the town of Ausable, reported a burglary at 6:43 a.m. Sept. 30. There, suspects gained entry through a side window, removed the ATM machine valued at approximately $3,000 and the money inside the machine. That ATM was also secured to the floor with lag bolts, however, the suspects were able to remove the ATM from the floor. Those with information concerning the investigations are asked to call the New York State Police in Plattsburgh at 563-3761 or Lewis at 873-2750.

Fourth-grade teacher receives special state recognition Lisa Napper to receive award during Nov. 2 reception jeremiah@denpubs.com SARANAC — Saranac Elementary School has a fourth-grade teacher that’s been touching lives for more than 20 years. And, now, she’s receiving special recognition for her efforts. The New York State Education Department has named Lisa Napper the recipient of the 2009 New York State Better Beginnings Award. The award is given annually to only one teacher in the state who exemplifies teaching excellence. Upon learning she will receive the award, Napper — who has been with the school district since 1988 — said she was both “surprised” and “honored.” “I feel very honored accepting this as an individual, but I’d feel more comfortable accepting it if it were an award for the Saranac Central School District,” said Napper. “This district is completely team-oriented. So, it would be very easy for any one of my colleagues to be able to accept this award as well.” However, school principal Marguerite M. Tamer said the number of nominations which poured in for Napper was overwhelming. “When we heard about the award and the type of person they were looking for, she immediately came to everybody’s mind,” said Tamer, who noted nominations came from colleagues, parents, former students and members of the community. “Her integrity, honesty and strong morals are beyond reproach,” a nomination from one administrator read. “Additionally, her empathy for her students is extraordinary. Mrs. Napper consistently extends her work day in an attempt to meet her students’ needs.” Another nomination also had glowing remarks for her, from the perspective of both
a student and fellow educator. The nominator recalled losing a brother to cancer, at which time Napper took her “under her wing,” helping her continue her relationships with friends, teachers, counselors and family during the difficult time. “Mrs. Napper has a way of making her students feel important and special,” the letter read. “She does a great job at recognizing individual needs and does what is appropriate to help each and every student ... Lisa helped shape who I was as a development educator.” One community member credited Napper for her efforts as president of the Saranac Teachers Association, particularly in reference to the July 2006 closing of Cadyville Elementary School. When the closure was proposed by the school district, the community and those involved with the school were “in an uproar,” the nominator wrote. “Immediately, the teachers at Cadyville turned to Lisa Napper, as association president, for assistance,” the letter stated. “Lisa’s response was well thought out, efficient and executed with respect for all involved. Lisa listened to the complaints of the teachers and encouraged those teachers to work together with her to make a list of concerns.” Napper then took the concerns to school district administrators and “spent countless hours as a mediator between the parties trying to ascertain what options were available and if the options satisfied the needs of the teachers.” Though the school closed, the teachers received assistance to accommodate the transition and many of the worries of community members were put to rest. “In a circumstance that could have been extremely hostile,” the letter continued, “Lisa’s quiet presence prevails, in the best interest of the students in the Saranac district.”

The nominations, said Tamer, validated what she already knew. “I know how wonderful she is, but reading them was very heart-warming,” said Tamer. “And, I know why they selected her.” Napper said the support she has received both at school and from home, has meant all the difference in making her a successful teacher. “I’ve been fortunate to have that support from both my home family and my school
family,” she said. “And, Saranac is the finest school in the North Country. We are very fortunate to have phenomenal colleagues, phenomenal administration and phenomenal parents by our side.” Napper will be presented with her award during a regular board of education meeting at the district office in Dannemora Monday, Nov. 2. The award will be conferred at 6:30 p.m. A reception is scheduled prior to the meeting at 6 p.m.

esearching Windows 7 will uncover the notion Windows 7 is the second release of Windows Vista. Is that true? Mostly it is. Is that bad? No, I don’t
think so. Microsoft NT operating systems, which kept the same major design through Windows 2000/XP, operated in two modes called Kernel Mode and User Mode. Kernel Mode operates with the highest privilege levels and consists of the Hardware Abstraction Layer, called HAL, and Executive Services. User mode has lower privileges and consists of subsystems that include Win32, Win32 Security and others. Take an everyday application like Internet Explorer and examine how it operates. Opening the program causes it to interact with the Win32 Subsystem which communicates needs to Executive Services which then interacts with HAL to control hardware. Because the program never directly interacts with hardware, everything stays under control. The analogy of a restaurant works well. Diners are applications, waiters are Executive Services and the chef is HAL. Keeping diners away from the chef and making them interact with the waiters is good practice and generally makes things run smoother. The problem with the design is device drivers interacted with Kernel Mode and could cause system instability. In Vista, Microsoft changed the driver architecture by moving
Elmore SPCA
root functionality away from Kernel Mode and placing it into the lower privileged User Mode making systems more stable. But the technology was new, manufacturers had issues to overcome with the change and the end result was very poor Vista performance. Fast forward to the present time and the technology is considered “mature.” Manufacturers know the new By Ron Poland architecture very well and Microsoft has worked hard to eliminate bugs and bring forth enhancements and better performance. I personally have no problem with Vista rehashed. Please tell the chef I’ll have an order of Windows 7.

’m sure everyone has seen a sale like this. The grocery store will offer a great bargain price on an item, the kind of item you might like to buy quite a few of at a time. But then, the store’s advertisement says, in small print, “Limit 4.” If you’ve been reading this column for a while and saving all of your weekly coupon inserts, it’s likely that you have accumulated multiple coupons for the same item. For this example, assume you’ve been watching your store’s sale fliers and waiting for yogurt cups to go on sale. Finally, there they are, four for $1, a great price! But then, of course, you’re disappointed to note you can only buy four cups of yogurt. Time for the fourth, best-kept couponing “secret.”

Best-kept secrets: Do you know your limits?
I
Do you feel local businesses do enough to help their communities?
Yes
he Clinton County Office for the Aging has just finished up this years round of public hearings. We hold these hearings annually at nutrition sites around the county in order to educate and inform the public about Office for the Aging’s programs and services. More importantly, we want to hear from seniors who use our programs about what works, what doesn’t, and what changes they would like to see. We use this information to mold our current programming, and to introduce new programs. Some of the topics of interest to seniors this year were Home Energy Assistance Program eligibility guidelines, and what kind of benefit they could expect this year; what kind of assistance is available for home weatherization; Health Insurance Counseling, and how to pick a Medicare part D Plan, employment for seniors, and transportation, to name a few. Transportation is a hot topic, with high fuel prices, a large county, and people having a variety of transportation needs. Clinton County Public Transit does a great job with regular city and rural routes, and also the Paratransit bus for people who cannot access the regular routes, but they are unable to serve everyone. The Office for the Aging helps fund two bus-
to beat the pricing game, too, because sales with purchase limits typically offer an item at a low price in the store’s pricing cycle, too. When the price hits that low, it’s the right time to buy as many as you will need or use until the price drops again. So, let’s see how this sale could work in my favor. Because I’ve saved my coupon inserts, I have six coupons for 50 cents off four cups of yogurt. I’m not limited to just buying four cups; I’ll buy 24 today! 24 yogurt cups may seem like a lot to buy at one time, but in comparing the expiration dates with the amount of yogurt our household will likely consume over the next month, I know that our family of five will eat it long before it expires. I buy four cups of each flavor that I want, never exceeding the purchase limit of four for any of the flavors. And wait until you see what I pay. With a 50-cent coupon for each four I buy, my yogurt now costs me just $3 for 24 cups, or just 12.5 cents each! That’s a fantastic price for By Jill Cataldo yogurt cups. By waiting to use my yogurt coupons until yogurt was deeply discounted, I saved even more. I’ve mentioned this before, but the grocery stores in my neighborhood do not double coupons. But around the country, many stores do. Imagine if I were shopping in a store that doubled coupons! each 50-cent coupon would double to $1 in value and all the yogurt would be free. Now that’s supercouponing!
Coupon Queen
At most stores, when a sale item is advertised “limit 4,” it does not refer to the number of total items of that type but, rather, the variety of each item. With the yogurt example, above, you would not be limited to four cups of yogurt. You’d be limited to four vanilla, four peach, four blueberry, four banana and so on. How does this work? When purchase limits are put into place for a sale, most stores set the register to limit four scans at the sale price on the bar code of that product. But each variety of a product has its own unique bar code. So, while the advertisement may lead us to believe that we can buy just four yogurt cups, we can actually buy four of each flavor. If 12packs of soda are on sale “limit 5,” we can buy five 12-packs of each variety of soda. As long as you don’t exceed the purchase limit on each flavor, type, or variety of an item you can essentially take home as many of that item as you want or need that day — and in turn, buy as many as you have coupons for. It’s a great way

Important info about late blight
W
e have been having a lot of late blight questions this year. One important question many people are asking is “Is it safe to eat a tomato infected with late blight?” Here is a very informative and important answer to the question: Yes, the unaffected parts probably are safe to eat. The conclusion unaffected tissue is safe to consume if diseased sections are adequately removed is based on several points. This pathogen does not produce a toxin that can make people sick, as a few plant pathogens can do. Plant pathogens cannot infect people. No food safety issues have been found with other diseases that affect tomato fruit or potato tubers. Late blight appears to be like other more common diseases, in that these do not appear to affect plant tissue beyond the area of infection. Many home gardeners often cut off diseased tissue rather than throw out the entire fruit or tuber having found the healthy appearing part of these to taste fine. To date, this practice has not been associated with any human health issues. Diseases like late blight are not considered a health concern for commercial tomato processing. Fruits are sorted to remove affected ones, but this is because of the impact on fruit quality. For home canning, only disease-free, preferably vine-ripened, firm tomatoes are recommended in the USDA Complete Guide
Public or private? Local schools admit non-resident students to their schools and charge tuition. Some school districts have discussed how much should be charged. The answer is simple. Public schools should not accept students from other districts. Their mission is to educate the students of their own district, not students from elsewhere. Public schools serve their own demographic, not the demographic of other districts. If public schools focused on their public, then tuition would be a moot point. If a school district begins to reap benefits from paying students from other districts, would that income begin to affect decisions being made for students of their own public? Even if public schools charge tuition, do we not end up with a public school funding private education? If public school accept students from other districts, does that not set up the potential for competition among public school districts, a type of competition that school districts have fought against? Should a public school board of education be discussing how to lower tuition to make the school more attractive to others or how to fill those empty seats? Isn’t the filling of seats in a public school a matter of the birth rate rather than the marketing of the school? Likewise, if a public school accepts students from another public school, is that not robbing students and creating empty seats in another school district? Public schools need to be concerned about their own public not about the students from elsewhere. If public schools want to participate in the recruiting game to attract students from elsewhere, then let them become private. The educational voucher solution for funding would be a perfect alternative. Do public schools really want the competition? Msgr. Robert H. Aucoin Principal, Seton Catholic Central Plattsburgh
to Home Canning because fungal pathogens may raise tissue pH (which has been supported by recent studies) and thereby allow growth of potentially harmful microorganisms, such as Salmonella. Deterioration can occur quickly after infection; therefore, affected tomatoes and potatoes should be salvaged and consumed right away. This was taken from Cornell University’s Department of Horticulture Web site, www.hort.cornell.edu. The most important message about consuming late blight is in bold. We are trying to get the word out that home gardeners should not can tomatoes infected with late blight. Please help the United Way The need for the services that United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties Inc. helps supports has never been greater. Employment, construction and tourism are down, yet gas, food and utility costs are rising. Demands on public agencies, food pantries, utility funds, and free clinics are much higher than last year and from people who have never requested assistance before. State funding to public and private agencies has been slashed, at the same time requests for assistance are increasing. United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties, Inc helps fill that gap. The United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties Inc has been a part of this community for 60 years. Our main role is providing financial support to local health and human service programs to 33 partner agencies. They do not just provide a blank check to these agencies; they fund specific programs with measurable outcome objectives ensuring the funds invested on your behalf are making the greatest impact on community needs. I realize that many are facing financial pressures in their own families. But, I hope people would give as generously as they can. I’m sure they know someone who has been helped by one of the United Way partner agencies, a neighbor, co-worker, student, and quite likely their own family. The United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties needs your help this year. If you work for one of the 135 businesses that allow you to donate through payroll deduction, that is the easiest way. If your employer doesn’t offer a workplace campaign, please ask if they will start one. If you’ve received a letter from the United Way, please reply. Even a small amount can make a big difference in the lives of others in need in our community. Please support our local United Way. Tangles From page 1 out hesitation, Whittington began looking into getting hair extensions for Breanna. “I didn’t see [Breanna] at first because I didn’t have Wanda bring her in, but she had very little hair, just a little bit at the top,” Whittington. “So, I had to do some research to see how I could attach it to the scalp.” The process required a special product, which Whittington immediately ordered and made affordable for McIntyre, who admitted doesn’t “have a lot of money.” “Through trial and error, we got her where she is,” he said with a laugh. Since Breanna first started going to Tangles, her new head of hair has continued to evolve and is now virtually impossible to tell apart from a regular head of hair, said Whittington. “When she first came in, she was very downtrodden,” he said. “Once she got her hair, she began to open up. When I saw her smile and she hugged me for the first time, it was great.” “She’s always had a good personality but you can tell the difference,” said McIntyre. “She feels better about herself; she’s got more confidence.” Even Breanna herself said her new look has helped a lot with people who have either teased her about her appearance in the past or who simply didn’t understand what ectodermal dysplasia is, she said. “I’ve gotten picked on a lot,” said Breanna. “I looked different before I got my ex-
tensions because I didn’t have a lot of hair. A lot of people have asked me questions about it because they’re curious. A lot of people assume I have cancer.” Now, that’s not the case. “It makes me look a little bit more normal,” Breanna said of her extensions, which are made from authentic human hair. “A lot of people don’t even know I have them. They think it’s my real hair.” Breanna’s personal story is one example of how Whittington and Gerry help people on an everyday basis, said McIntyre. “I thought what better people to nominate than them,” she said. And, though they didn’t win, Tangles did place within the top 150 nominations in the country and was the only business nominated in the county. The closest was “One Little, Two Little,” an on-line children’s store based in Keene in Essex County. Even without national recognition, Whittington said he and Gerry will continue doing what they do. “I’ve been there before. Life hasn’t always been good for me,” said Whittington. “I know what it’s like to be in need and not know who will help you. And, to have someone step up, completely unknown to you and help, it’s something you never forget.”

School song earns recognition for composer ‘Starsplitter Fanfare’ created for Beekmantown Elementary, touted as Editor’s Choice by J.W. Pepper Catalog By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com WEST CHAZY — Beekmantown Elementary School has a connection to a critically-acclaimed piece of music. “Starsplitter Fanfare,” a piece composed for the school by internationally-known composer Brian Balmages, has received the Editor ’s Choice Award from the J.W. Pepper Catalog, one of the world’s premiere sheet music suppliers. According to Ricki Marin, president of the school’s Parent-Teacher Organization, the PTO commissioned the piece for the school to “further enhance and support band and music at the elementary level.” “I think it’s wonderful [the piece] is being recognized in such a positive way and that the PTO was able to provide an avenue for that success,” said Marin. “We wanted to do this to enhance the students’ education and provide them with an experience they might otherwise not have had.” The school began collaborating
with Balmages in the spring of 2008 after school band director Susan Nystoriak reached out to the composer through his Web site, www.brianbalmages.com. Nystoriak said she chose Balmages because the elementary band has performed many of his pieces in the past. “They’ve always been my students’ favorites,” she said. “He writes really well for elementary bands.” Upon sending Balmages an e-mail, it didn’t take long for him to get back to her, said Nystoriak. “I expected to hear a response, but I didn’t expect that it would work out in the timeframe that we were looking to do something,” she said. That was because the school was looking to have the children perform the new piece in the spring of 2009, she said. “He gathered information about the district, asked me what level of music I was hoping for him to
write,” said Nystoriak. “And, he was able to complete the composition by January.” “He just had this idea in his head of a supernova going off and he kind of wrote the song to depict these exploding stars in the universe,” she

stating he was most impressed with the school and community support of creating the song for the students. “The students thoroughly enjoyed learning about his favorite music, that which inspired him to become a musician, and his overall inspiration for writing ‘Starsplitter Fanfare,’” said Marin. “Hopefully, what the kids got out of this adventure was something that could one day help some of them pursue something in the arts.” Though Nystoriak said she was already happy for the students to have a specially-produced composition, she said she was even more excited when learning of the recognition in the J.W. Pepper Catalog, which now make the sheet music for the song available to the public. “It’s one of the pieces they deem to be the best music for that level,” explained Nystoriak. “There’s probably only eight or 10 pieces at that level that made the cut for Editor ’s Choice. It’s exciting.”

continued. “And, the music is very depictive of that.” Balmages visited the school in May, spending two days with students, attending a band rehearsal and taking questions from band students. The composer also attended a school band concert that month, during which the students performed the world premiere of his song. He addressed the audience,

Morrisonville professor honored at portrait unveiling By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The portrait of Dr. Gordon C. Pollard, Morrisonville, now adorns a wall in Feinberg Library at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. The veteran anthropology professor was honored during a ceremony at the library Oct. 2 for his recent recognition as a SUNY distinguished teaching professor. Pollard is one of only 16 faculty members throughout the entire SUNY system to receive the distinguished teaching professorship title this year. SUNY Plattsburgh president Dr. John C. Ettling commended Pollard for receiving his recognition which is considered the highest honor bestowed on a professor by the SUNY system. “The faculty and staff are the greatest strength of any college campus and the students here at SUNY Plattsburgh are fortunate to have an outstanding faculty and staff,” said Ettling. “So, Gordon, thank you and congratulations on behalf of all of us for your service to the college, to our alumni, to the community, to the discipline of anthropology, but especially to our students.”
The ceremony included remarks from Pollard’s colleagues, including Dr. John R. Moravek, an associate professor of geography who has worked with Pollard for more than 40 years. Moravek credited Pollard for his continued dedication to his profession and to his students. “Gordon’s played a pivotal role in a host of students’ lives in helping them to realize their full potential and, in fact, reach levels of academic achievement they never thought possible,” said Moravek. On past field studies, when Moravek’s classes would work sideby-side with Pollard’s, it made for a richer experience, said Moravek. “It was always good to have Gordon and his students as part of the field trips,” he said. “It clearly enhanced the quality of the overall experience for my students when Gordon’s classes were along.” “Students find both his introductory and his upper division courses rigorous and intellectually-demanding, but they also find them interesting and stimulating,” said Dr. Patricia J. Higgins, provost and vice president for academic affairs and a fellow SUNY distinguished teaching professor. “Through these classes, he’s attracted many students into anthropol-

ogy in our own institution and beyond into graduate study and into careers in anthropology and archaeology.” “I think this is a marvelous opportunity that he’s provided for students,” added Higgins. Dr. Jin Kim, a communications professor at the university, said Pollard personified the words of the Chinese philosopher Confucius. “Teaching and learning are just two different manifestations of the same process,” said Kim. “The ability to take the perspective of his students has been a hallmark of his teaching career. If that quality can be developed by all members of our profession, the dire prediction of the imminent demise of colleges will have indeed been proven misguided.” Pollard thanked his colleagues for their words of praise and congratulations upon unveiling his portrait with Ettling’s assistance. “What can I say other than thank you? It is a real honor to be among this group,” Pollard said as he looked at a wall adorned with portraits of other distinguished teaching professors. “I’ve had the pleasure of knowing many of these people over the decades personally as colleagues and as friends, and it is a true honor to be here.”

The Plattsburgh CROP Walk was held Oct. 4, with hundreds turning out in support of the event. The walk, which started from the United Methodist Church, annually raises donations for Church World Service, an international organization that provides assistance to refugees and victims of natural disasters in underdeveloped countries. Twenty-five percent of the money raised, however, stays in the North Country benefitting local food pantries. According to initial tallies, this year’s walk raised more than $8,000. Disease Information / Early Detection One of the earliest signs of breast cancer can be an abnormality that shows up on a mammogram before it can be felt. The most common signs of breast cancer are a lump in the breast; abnormal thickening of the breast; or a change in the shape or color of the breast. Finding a lump or change in your breast does not necessarily mean you have breast cancer. Additional changes that may also be signs of breast cancer include: • Any new, hard lump or thickening in any part of the breast • Change in breast size or shape • Dimpling or puckering of the skin NBCAM • Swelling, redness or warmth that does not go away 25 years • Pain in one spot that does not vary with your monthly cycle • Pulling in of the nipple • Nipple discharge that starts suddenly and appears only in one breast • An itchy, sore or scaling area on one nipple Be Strong - Think Positive

ADIRONDACK OUTDOORS • CLINTON TODAY - 13
New blog aims to provide forum for outdoor topics B
y the time you read this I will have a new blog setup on our Web site designed to allow outdoorsmen an opportunity to exchange stories and ideas. I hope to give some insight into what is and isn’t working for me at any given time and perhaps start a dialogue with others who enjoy the outdoor pursuits as much as I do. I definitely don’t profess to know it all, and would love to learn new hunting and fishing practices that have proven successful, so feel free to go to www.denpubs.com and drop me a line. I also strongly encourage questions — from whether the ice is gone from a particular pond to where heritage strains of brookies have been stocked to the politics behind proposed state environmental policies. If I can’t answer you I’ll do my best to research an answer — or I’ll just make it up. (Kidding, of course). Hopefully, if I can’t answer it, one of our bloggers can. As I said, I don’t profess to know it all, but there is power in numbers. Combine our collective experience and we will all be better for it. I plan to share some of our on-line banter in future columns. I can also share an unlimited number of photographs online, so I strongly encourage you to submit your pictures by e-mail to me at johng@denpubs.com or by snail mail to 14 Hand Ave., Elizabethtown N.Y. 12932. Speaking of great photos, Jim Hotaling from the Willsboro Fish and Game submitted a picture of the club’s youth pheasant hunt that took place Sept. 26. The hunt is open to youth ages 12-15 and gives young hunters an opportunity to experience some pheasant hunting action behind experienced dogs and their handlers. Another is planned for Oct. 11. For information about the hunt, give Hotaling a call at 963-7430
The Essex County Fish & Game League and the Willsboro Fish & Game Club held their youth pheasant hunt Sept. 26. Another hunt will be held Oct. 11. Pictured are, left to right, Todd Bailey, Brian Murray, Steven Murray, Justin Heald, Jack Oliver, Joe Pray, Garrett Reynolds and the dogs Gunner and Michela. or John Oliver at 963-4421.
Hunter’s screening The annual hunter ’s health screening which is offered free-of-charge to anyone who shows up with his or her 2009 hunting license will take place this year on Thursday, Oct. 22 from 5-7 p.m. The screening is designed to give hunters a review of their overall health before they exert themselves in the woods in search of deer. The health clinic will assess blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and oxygen levels. Hospital staff will also check vision, height and weight, providing an overall health picture. Participants will also have an EKG reading taken, which measures heart health. A team of nurses and lab staff, led by Dr. Moisan, will conduct the health screening. They will then be able to discuss concerns and offer advice. The hospital lobby will be filled with information related to hunting. There will be a representative from the Sheriff ’s Department offering free gun locks and the state Department of Conservation will be on-hand to answer questions. There will be safety information, recipes, prize drawings and snacks.
Salerno brothers Tony and Pat will also be on hand to answer questions and offer hunting tips. The Salerno family has produced a number of hunting videos and has been featured in national publications.
Ward Lumber to host 17th annual buck contest Ward Lumber Company is once again hosting its annual buck contest, though this year they have added a prize drawn at random for any size buck entered. Anyone is eligible and need only take their buck to Ward Lumber in Jay during business hours to have it weighed and entered. Business hours are Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. A winner in each category will be selected after Dec. 5. Each winner will each receive a $100 Ward Lumber Gift Card. All hunters entering will be photographed with their bucks, and if you supply an e-mail address, they will e-mail the photo to you. All contestants will also receive a baseball cap just for entering.

Hike
Correction The last paragraph in a column written by Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Bernie Bassett in the Sept. 26 edition of this newspaper was inadvertently cut off. The column should have ended with the following paragraph: The many meetings, special events, communications, budget activity, drafting of new resolutions, proposing policy, developing local ordinances, day to day management, etc. will continue to the end of this year and then we will start all over again as Jan. 1, 2010 brings a new year and new challenges. I will continue to monitor the decisions our legislators in Albany and Washington make while working locally to bring new jobs and economic opportunity to our town. A growing community is a healthy community and, as town supervisor, I plan to continue the progress!

malignant melanoma, though has lost grandparents to cancer over the years. The walk was a way for her to reflect on how cancer has affected her and the ones she loves, she said. “It was just a fun day with friends and a chance to get out and remember people who have survived and also people who are still struggling with cancer,” said Kaulfuss, who has also hiked with LaBaff in the past. The specially-themed hike is something LaBaff hopes won’t be a one-time thing, she said. And, she’s not alone. “Now, they want to do it annually and actually raise some money for cancer awareness,” said LaBaff. “There’s even more people who want to be a part of it next year.” “We’d love to have more people involved,” said Kaulfuss. Those interested in joining next year ’s hike are encouraged to contact LaBaff at 315-379-9885, or Ryan at 643-9386.

friends and family members who are cancer survivors. “I was motivated to do [the hike] in memory of family members and certainly in support of Nancy and other friends who are cancer survivors,” said Ryan, who has hiked with LaBaff on other occasions. The hike, said Ryan, was about more than just exercise. It was about camaraderie. “It was wonderful, even though the weather was not ideal,” she said. “We were going and determined to get to the top. We didn’t have much of a view, but we had the support of one another.” “It was just a great hike,” she added. Colleen Kaulfuss of Saranac, who also went on the hike, agreed. Cancer has also been a part of Kaulfuss’ life, not affecting her, but the lives of many members of her family. “I was only about 11 when my father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer,” said Kaulfuss. “But, he’s a survivor.” Kaulfuss’ sister was also diagnosed and has survived
