Representatives from the Clinton County Board of Realtors presented Kent W. Brooks, executive director of Hospice of the North Country, with a check for $29,379 Dec. 4. The record setting donation was the annual contribution the Board of Realtors makes to Hospice. The donation, said Brooks, is two to three times more than the average amount the organization has raised for Hospice in the past. “This amount just represents to us that the Board of Realtors really put a lot of effort this year into supporting our cause and our new building,” said Brooks. “They’ve always been excellent in what they’ve raised but they wanted to step it up and they really, really did well this year.”

Calling all volunteers! Morrisonville Rescue Squad among those seeing decline in membership By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com MORRISONVILLE — There’s one month a year the nation calls on people to volunteer time to help out in their communities. And, though that month, the month of April, is four months away, one local emergency service provider says there’s no time like the present to lend a hand. Justin K. Burl, chief officer for the Morrisonville Rescue Squad, said his department is facing the same problem many volunteer fire departments and emergency serv-
ice providers are facing — dwindling membership. Since assuming his position as squad chief one year ago, Burl said he’s seen the number of volunteers at the lowest it’s been in years. “We currently have 30 volunteers, which is down from recent years,” said Burl. Though 30 may sound like a sufficient number, said Burl, it can be a roll of the dice how many volunteers are available for a call. It depends on the time of day, given everyone’s varying work schedules, he said. Ideally, Burl said he’d like

Salvation Army asks for community’s help
Christmas cheer The town of Peru held its annual tree lighting ceremony, ushering in the Christmas season Dec. 4. During the event, Town Supervisor-elect Peter G. Glushko turned on the lights to the tree as the Back Porch Band led residents in holiday songs from the town gazebo. The ceremony included a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, who arrived on by fire truck with the Peru Volunteer Fire Department. Afterward, Santa took time to meet with children in the fellowship center of Peru Community Church. More photos from the event may be found on our Web site, www.clinton-today.com. has increased direct services locally by 33 percent, Goodman noted. Most recently, a Thanksgiving dinner for the underprivileged hosted by the chapter at the Plattsburgh Elks Lodge, served 350 people. “If we don’t reach our goal during this fundraiser, we’ll feel the impact throughout all of 2010,” said Goodman. While the tough economy and the loss of kettle sites are certainly part of the reason for the drop in kettles, Goodman said the fact the region hasn’t been seeing more winter-like conditions until recently has had an effect. “The Christmas spirit is not as prevalent yet,” he said. There are several ways the community can help, Goodman said. Bellringers are needed with those interested in volunteering asked to call 561-2951 or 1-877-764-7259 or by going on-line to www.redkettles.org. Tax-deductible donations may also be made on-line or by mail to the chapter at 4804 S. Catherine St., P.O. Box 368, Plattsburgh N.Y. 12901-0368.

PLATTSBURGH — The Salvation Army of Plattsburgh is anticipating a critical shortage in funds for 2010 if the fundraising during the Red Kettle Campaign doesn’t improve. “We are already $10,000 behind last year at this time,” reported Capt. Laurence Goodman, director of the local Salvation Army chapter. “With the loss of IGA Supermarket in Keeseville as a kettle site and reduced days at other locations, it’s getting more difficult to make up the loss. Every day, we are getting farther behind.” Goodman added the nonprofit organization is in desperate need of help from “our North Country neighbors to ensure that we can continue to assist families and individuals who are struggling.” The Red Kettle Campaign is the most important fundraiser of the year for The Salvation Army, he said. “This is a true emergency. The kettles are very, very slow,” said Goodman. “At the same time, more people are knocking at our door requesting assistance.” Since 2007, The Salvation Army

Correction officers lend hand to SPCA
New campaign also aims to keep shelter financially-solvent By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PERU — Elmore SPCA has had a tough few years, but through the continued support of social and civic organizations and the general community, things are continuing to look up, representatives say. Carol M. Solari-Ruscoe, a member of the animal shelter ’s board of directors, said financial troubles which have plagued the shelter since last year have lessened thanks to the generosity of the North Country. Most recently, Elmore SPCA received a $750 donation from the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association, which represents correction officers at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. The shelter was one of several organizations to receive a portion of more than $10,000 from the association. “Our first reaction was ‘Wow! What an unexpected and wonderful surprise,’” said Solari-Ruscoe. Gordon E. LaBonte, a steward for NYSCOPBA, said the donation was a first for the association’s members, who have traditionally used the fund to purchase one another gifts during the holidays. “We usually buy insulated coffee cups,

lunch pails,” said LaBonte. “We thought this would make people’s holidays a lot brighter instead.” LaBonte credited the association’s membership for their generosity, hoping the donation could help the SPCA as well as Hannah’s Hope Fund, WPTZ’s Toys for Kids, the Plattsburgh Interfaith Foodshelf and the Adirondack Humane Society, which also received funding. “We all chose to donate the money this year and it feels a lot better than the small trinkets that we would’ve bought ourselves,” he said. The donation comes at a crucial time for the shelter, said Solari-Ruscoe, as efforts are continuing to be stepped up to keep the shelter financially above water. The SPCA board has devised a new fundraising initiative, the “Elmore SPCA 1,200 Club,” which SolariRuscoe said aims to attract financial support in a “less painful” way. “One of our volunteers came up with the idea. She told us if we need to raise money for $12,000 a month in operating expenses, it would be easier if we were able to get 1,200 people to donate $10 a month,” said SolariRuscoe. “When you look at it that way, you’re talking about a person donating only 33 cents a day. If we can get enough people

Ultimately, if the fundraising drive is successful, it will allow the shelter ’s board of directors and staff to be able to fully concentrate their efforts on finding homes for shelter animals. “When you’re constantly dealing with fi-

ast week, we looked at the ratification of the new Wi-Fi (wireless local area network) standard, 802.11n. This week, we look at the new standard and discuss how it performs better than the older Wi-Fi standard, 802.11g. 802.11g had a theoretical throughput rating of 54 Mbps but the actual speed fell to half of that or even lower. Still, the throughput was adequate for most uses when the standard was introduced in 2003 and, because it operated in the 2.4 GHz band, it was backward compatible with even older 802.11b devices. The new 802.11n standard uses completely new technology in some areas and tweaks existing technologies in other areas to give Wi-Fi both more throughput and distance. The changes include multiple input-multiple output, channel bonding, and payload optimization. Multiple input — multiple output (MIMO) is a new Wi-Fi technology that uses multiple antennas to transmit and receive multiple data signals. Instead of sending and receiving one data signal, MIMO can simultaneously transmit three signals while receiving two. The technology allows for a much higher throughput of data and it increases the distance between wireless devices. Where 802.11g Wi-Fi used only one of 14 available channels to send or receive data, 802.11n Wi-Fi introduces channel bonding which allows two
separate channels to transmit data simultaneously increasing the total amount of data transmitted. Payload optimization is a tweaking of current technology that allows more data to be carried within each packet. 802.11n also provides backward compatibility for 802.11a, b and g devices so updating to new access points is possible without the need to upgrade the whole By Ron Poland system. Together, the changes in the new Wi-Fi standard allow organizations the option to easily deploy low-cost, higher-speed wireless to satisfy the ever increasing appetite for more throughput.

rying to do everything right promotes an all or nothing attitude. So, if you can’t do something perfectly (exercise daily for one hour), then you may not do anything at all. That is not good. We need to change our mindset and start believing every little bit counts! Here are “good enough” guidelines for four common “get fit” recommendations. Fruits and Vegetables — The perfect: nine servings a day. The good enough: five servings because that is all it takes to lower stroke risk by 31 percent, according to a recent Harvard study. Exercise — The perfect: 30 minutes of cardio-exercise five or more days a week. The good enough: 17 minutes a day. This still reduces your risk of heart disease by 27 percent. Hydration — The perfect: eight eight-ounce glasses of water a day. The good enough: drink with all meals and in between meals. Consider other beverages besides water (juices, milk, coffee, tea). Foods that contain water, soups, fruits and vegetables, contribute to hydration as well. Strength training — The perfect: two or three times a week. The good enough: once a week. Research has shown people
who lift weights once a week for two months gained as much muscle as those who lift weights three times a week; it just took a few weeks longer for the same results. The key is to slow down. Take your time while lifting to build muscle faster. Allow three to four seconds to lift the weight and three to four seconds to lower it. And, remember, it’s never too late. Small changes matter ... start today!

How ‘Catalina’ coupons can help you save
I
f you’ve shopped for groceries at a large supermarket, you’ve undoubtedly noticed the long “string” of coupons that print out at the register along with your store receipt. These checkout coupons, or “Catalinas,” as coupon shoppers commonly call them, are incredibly valuable to coupon shoppers. (Catalina Marketing Corp. introduced the computer system that issues checkout coupons about 25 years ago, although the company says it’s not sure how or why shoppers picked up on the name.) If you’ve ever taken a look at the kinds of Catalinas that print after your shopping trip, you’ll notice that they typically fall into three categories: money-off coupons for specific products, coupons for money off on your next shopping trip or alerts of upcoming sales. A shopper receives money-off Catalinas when the UPCs of certain items in their cart are scanned at checkout time. The register “sees” a certain brand or type of item you are purchasing and spits out a Catalina that offers a discount on a competing item that you may consider purchasing in the future. Last week I purchased a certain brand of apple juice and received a $1 checkout coupon for a competitor ’s brand of apple juice. You may even receive a coupon for a free item! Just in the last month, I bought one variety of pet treats and received a coupon for a free package of treats from a competing brand. A couple of weeks later, I bought one brand of yogurt and received a Catalina for a free 4-pack of a competitor ’s brand of yogurt. The second type of Catalina is issued during a general money-back sale at the store. You may see a store ad that states, “Buy any 10 products in this group and receive $10 off your next order.” That $10 savings comes in the form of a checkout coupon good for $10 off your next shopping trip. The discount is good on anything in the store. It’s just like having $10 cash to spend. The third kind of checkout coupon is an “alert.” These coupon alerts aren’t technically coupons, since they don’t of-
fer money off anything in particular, but they do contain details of an upcoming sale at the store. These “secret” sales are typically not advertised in any of the store’s flyers, so these checkout alerts are the only way shoppers can get in on the savings. Unfortunately, many shoppers consistently overlook the value of checkout coupons. It’s true that carryBy Jill Cataldo ing a long, somewhat cumbersome ticker-tape of Catalinas with your receipt as you exit the store can be a mild annoyance. But the value of all three of these varieties of coupon cannot be overstated. They’re all important, and you should save them all. I certainly do! Just as we save all of our coupons that come in the newspaper, even the ones for things we think we may not buy, saving all of our Catalina coupons ensures that we’ll have them on hand in case those items go on sale too. Almost two months ago, I received three $1 coupons for a smoothie beverage that I’d never tried before. Even though this is a product I wasn’t terribly interested in purchasing, I held onto the Catalina coupons. A few weeks ago, just before those coupons were due to expire … the smoothies went on sale for $1. Because I’d saved my Catalinas, now I got three of them for free! © CTW Features

CLINTON TODAY - 5
Gerardi bids fond farewell as supervisor
A
s I leave office after two terms, I’d like to say thank you for letting me stand for the town; it was an honor. I’ve enjoyed representing Saranac in a larger context and also working on specific projects with the board members for the town’s advancement: establishing a professional looking Web site, featuring student art work in the town hall meeting room and the court house, helping to form the Saranac Local Development Corporation, paying more attention to the Standish Park, producing a welcome packet for new town residents, making home visits throughout the year, keeping you informed by writing regularly for the Town Crier and the Free Trader, encouraging the production of a town promotional video, receiving state and federal grants totaling $106,000, adopting a town law governing adult entertainment, and helping to keep the overall town budget increases near or under the consumer price index. In the next few years, I will look to see how some of the projects which we started, but have not yet completed, are faring: the revitalization of town lands around the Saranac River and in the hamlets, the progress of building an industrial park on town land, and the status of a Community Broadband Network after helping them receive a $107,000 grant to build infrastructure to provide area residents with high speed Internet. Of course there have been some frustrations. The money from the grants we received is still being held up — we are not immune to the national and state economies. We were not able to convince the county to keep the Soper Road
Bridge open. The Saranac vs. Reed case has not yet been decided. There are challenges ahead for the town. If we can’t find more volunteers, the three water boards either need to be abolished and the districts be led directly by the town board or the three boards should be combined into one. The preliminary study on the industrial park needs to get done. The local waterfront By Joe Gerardi revitalization program requires action. A bridge over the True Brook has to be replaced. In a previous column, I thanked the people with whom I’ve worked. The town can rest proudly with the jobs they do. And so, as I leave, I look forward to my next adventures in the same manner as I approached my duties in office two terms ago — allowing life to unfold and bloom. Good-bye and thank you.

Progress continues as town faces the new year
A
s we count down the days to 2010, I want to share my appreciation for our town of Plattsburgh team and the community for your support and patience. We have worked our way through a most difficult period of time. At the same time, many new jobs have been created with even more coming, in the near future. This past month our community came together to address concerns for the future of Pfizer and the many jobs there that need to be saved. I’m pleased to participate on the transition committee and I’m confident we will be able to impact the future use of their facilities and resources. We must remember the best resource we have is our human resources and we will work to protect them. I believe the future of the town will be impacted by our continued interest in alternative sources of energy. Future development of the property in and around the Plattsburgh International Airport will bring many new aerospace jobs. In 2010, we will continue to see new development in the area of the old North Country Shopping Center and the Tom Miller Road. Like many of you, I’m anxious for the opening of Panera Bread as well as the return of the Comfort Inn and the many new attractions that will be added to that project. I’m pleased to say as I travel about the 48 square miles that makes up the town of Plattsburgh, I find new construction in each corner. The coming year will bring opportunity and growth. I recently participated in this year ’s Strictly Business Forum.
Though we all acknowledged the many challenges our state’s deficit brings and the overwhelming tax burden New York State places on business and residents, there is reason for local optimism and hope for continued economic growth. I’m proud to say the town of Plattsburgh will continue to play a major role in the region’s future success. This is a special time of year for each of us to renew our belief in the future and a better new year. Still, we must remember to appreciation all we have. We must remember the many men and women, in the military, who will not be with their families to celebrate the holidays this year. In 2010, I will continue to work with each of you and to help create new jobs and opportunity. Best wishes to each of you for a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

How to properly care for your poinsettias
W
hen you think of Christmas and potted plants, the first plant that comes to mind is probably the poinsettia. Every year I purchase at least one to provide festive color to my holiday décor. I know I am not alone in my holiday plant selection. Poinsettias are a popular holiday decoration and gift – in fact they are the most popular Christmas plant and the best selling potted plant in the United States. In 2004, over 61 million plants were sold, with gross poinsettia sales of $220 million. That’s a lot of plants, especially when you think about the fact most of these plants are sold in a 6 week period once a year! If you have purchased or were given a poinsettia this holiday season, here are some care tips: Make sure the poinsettia is properly wrapped when bringing the plant outside. Or frigid winter weather can damage the bracts and leaves. Unwrap the poinsettia plant, so water can drain away from the pot. Place the plant in indirect sunlight. Poinsettia do not like the cold. Keep the plant away from drafts, doors, and windows. Ideal daytime temperatures are
60 to 70°F and night time temperatures around 55°F. High temperatures will shorten the plant’s life. Move the plant to a cooler room at night, if possible. Check the soil daily and water when dry. Wilted plants will drop bracts sooner than unstressed plants. If you want to keep the poinsettia past the holiday season, trim the plant back after the leaves drop to prevent the plant from looking spindly, apply fertilizer once a month, and starting in September place the plant in 14 hours of darkness to encourage blooming during the holiday season. With proper care, a poinsettia will provide you with color throughout and beyond the holiday season. So, if you are looking for an inexpensive way to liven up your holiday décor this season, visit your local florist or nursery and consider purchasing a poinsettia or two. Students do their part to feed families in need Collection drive teaches children a lesson in community service By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com WEST CHAZY — Reading, writing and arithmetic may be the fundamentals of early education, but Beekmantown Elementary School continues to instill a sense of social responsibility in its students as well. And, they’re enthusiastic about the idea. The school’s more than 400 students participated in a Thanksgiving food drive Nov. 4-20, collecting nearly 2,000 nonperishable items. The food was used to assemble Thanksgiving dinners for underprivileged families within the school district, with the remainder donated to the Beekmantown Food Shelf. School reading specialist Nancy McCormick said she’s helped oversee the Thanksgiving food drive for the past five years, with the help of colleague Sharon Carlin. The two are advisors to the school’s Kids Council, which is a version of student council for the fourth and fifth grade students, she explained. Though the club annually initiates the food drive, the rest of the school also pitches in to help in the effort, said McCormick. This year, the drive collected “much more” food than what has
been collected in previous years, she said. “It was fabulous. I think part of the reason is we have more students participating in the Kids Council this year,” said McCormick, who noted approximately 30 students are enrolled in the group. “I also think it’s because of the challenge we had to see what grade levels could collect the most food. We haven’t had a challenge like that in a while.” The challenge involved keeping a daily tally of food collected on a large graph near the school’s main entrance, with the top-collecting classes winning an ice cream social from Stewart’s Shops. “I think that helped bring in quite a bit of food,” said McCormick. In the end, two multi-age classrooms comprised of students in grades 2-5, donated the most, with a grand total of 512 items. Fifth-grader Bailee Mull, who participated in the food drive last year, was glad to help out again this year. “It was fun doing the food drive,” said Bailee. “It feels good because I’m helping kids and families that don’t really have that much. I think we did a very good job and we had fun at the same time.” “It made me feel pretty

happy,” fifth-grader Alexis Marking said about collecting food. “We’re helping a lot of people.” Everett Sapp, also a fifth grade student, said it “felt good helping other people who don’t have as much.” “One girl brought in like 30 cans. We really raised a lot in our class,” said

service project,” said Slattery, who also credited Hannaford for donating turkeys and Pray’s Farmers Market for donating potatoes toward the Thanksgiving dinners. “The kids had a lot of fun doing it. And, Stewart’s making the ice cream donation was a great incentive, in my opinion.”
“We need to thank everybody in our school, because without the help of the parents who give the food to the kids and everybody helping getting it all collected and counted and packed up, it wouldn’t happen,” added McCormick. “It was very much a school-wide effort.”

Donation From page 1 Laura J. Burns, executive officer for the Board of Realtors, said the money was raised from a recent auction night at Olive Ridley’s in Plattsburgh. Burns said she was surprised herself of the amount raised from the event, which was only open to realtors and their guests. “We didn’t advertise it to the public, so, for the most part, this is realtor money in this check,” said Burns. “It’s just amazing that everyone opened their wallets so wide and that we raised all this in one night.” The items auctioned were donated by local businesses, said Burns, who credited the donors for their support. “It took a lot of running around town asking for donations and a lot of preparation, but we got a lot of community support,” said Burns. Mary K. Fry, a realtor with Coldwell Banker Whitbeck Associates, said she was impressed with the variety of donations received, including what were considered “big ticket” items. “We had a house for a week [stay] in Florida, Yankee tickets, Miami Dolphin tickets, Montreal Canadiens tickets. There were some really big items,” said Fry, who also credited Olive Ridley’s owner Matt Spiegel for his generosity toward the event. “He was wonderful to us,” she added.
“This community is always really good about helping raise money,” added Mary Kay Penfield, also a realtor with Coldwell Banker Whitbeck Associates. Overall, the event was a resounding success, said Burns. “I’m really proud of them,” he said, “because it’s been a really tough year for realtors. The most we’ve ever raised is around $13,000. This was just amazing.” Brooks said the money will be divided among Hospice’s annual Light up a Life campaign, which raises money to help the organization provide end-of-life care to its patients, and Hospice’s building project. The organization recently broke ground for a new administrative facility on Tom Miller Road. “This kind of community support allows us to provide services to our patients above and beyond the bare minimums and it also allows us to address special upgrades and special projects that need to be done so we can move forward with the kinds and the amounts of services that we provide,” said Brooks. “We’re really honored they continue to support us year after year.

to see the squad’s roster be bolstered to 45, which is the number other squads consider a “full roster.” That number is also one departments didn’t seem to have trouble filling years ago. “It used to be you’d have so many people knocking on your door to join, you had to start limiting them,” said Burl, who is also a member of the Morrisonville Volunteer Fire Department, where he said numbers are also down. “Now, it’s kind of the other way around where we’re knocking on people’s doors trying to get people to volunteer.” In his opinion, Burl said it’s a combination of reasons there are less volunteers today. “The standards for training for firefighters and EMS have gone up dramatically, so that could be part of it for some people,” said Burl. “It could also be because lifestyles have changed from years ago. There are more families where both the mom and dad are working, which cuts into time they would be volunteering.” Traditionally, those seen serving fire departments and rescue squads have grown up around them, said Burl. Burl, who has served the squad for the past nine years, said his family has been involved with volunteer service for “several generations.” He recalls how he used to “hang around the firehouse” as a kid, wanting to follow in the footsteps of his family. “I was just a little disappointed when I turned 16 and they didn’t have any sort of explorer program like we fortunately have today,” he said. The explorer program, which has been in existence for the rescue squad for the past six years, introduces young adults to the world of volunteer service, said Burl. The Morrisonville fire department, and many other
What do I do? If you’re interested in volunteering, and live in the Morrisonville area, contact Justin Burl at 563-6402 or stop by the rescue squad at 21 Banker Road. emergency service organizations, have similar programs. The idea is to groom them to be active volunteers when they turn 18, he said. “It gives them an opportunity to start shadowing us and see if it’s something they want to do,” said Burl. “It gives the ones looking to do something an opportunity to serve.” The rescue squad and fire department, together, currently have 12 members their explorer programs, which Burl said is “a big number nowadays.” That means potentially 12 prospective members for the departments down the road. “That’s amazing because our operations really depend on volunteerism,” said Burl. And, in rescue squads and fire departments, there are many jobs to do, he added. So, even if you don’t feel like you can be the one administering CPR to patient or fighting a fire inches from a burning building, there’s room to help. “There’s a job for everybody,” said Burl. “We do public education and awareness events. Even if you’re not sure about do something directly, but if you just want to be a part of it, we’ll have something for you. All you have to do is stop by or call. If you see a vehicle here, if you see the lights on, stop in.”

The 2009 season grinds to a halt A
s you read this we’ll be closing the curtains on another northern zone hunting season. This time of year is always a tad deflating. Cleaning out the fridge at camp. Making ice fishing plans with lifetime hunting chums that rarely materialize. If only hunting season lasted all year ... the world would be a happier place. Except for the deer, of course. Oh, and the hunting camp widows. At least the newly wed ones who still miss you when you’re gone. For my crew this season will be marked by a number of great memories — culminating in one of the largest deer we’ve taken in years. Nevertheless, like most camps, we saw a lot less deer this season, especially does. I’ve heard the same almost universally across the board. Crews that traditionally put a baker ’s dozen on the meat pole hung maybe half that this year. Interestingly, though, state wildlife officials are predicting that the overall take will be up slightly higher than last year. Senior Wildlife Biologist Ed Reed told me that, in spite of the anecdotal evidence, the “reported take to date is actually a little ahead of last year.” “We won’t know how this translates into a calculated take until after the season when we can determine the reporting
take,” he said. Reed did say hunters also told him they believe the deer herd seemed smaller this year, and said his personal experience in the woods also followed that trend. But, he made a good point in that the weather definitely didn’t make life easy on us. “The weather was horrible for deer hunting most of the season with no snow cover and warm temperatures. The deer just weren’t moving much, especially during the daylight hours, although I did see quite a bit of buck sign in the woods. Our deer check efforts at meat cutters seemed to be low early in the season, but the past couple of weeks have picked up considerably,” Reed said. A look at local buck contests shows a similar trend, with a majority of the bucks weighed in the past couple weeks, though most are reporting less deer overall. The weather gods did smile on us the final weekend, and most had at least a day with tracking snow — even in the valleys. I know a handful of local camps took advantage. The Euba Mills Outlaws in New Russia, for example, more than doubled their season-long take in one weekend, and, word is some guy from E-town named Rabbit broke a long buckless lull with a big-tined eight. Good stuff.

Bill Kohen of Elizabethtown shot this massive 8-pointer on the last day of the 2009 northern zone season. The buck weighed 182 pounds after being run ragged chasing does and sparring with other bucks for dominance. If you have a picture of a monster catch, e-mail it to John Gereau at johng@denpubs.com!
