Ready for Spring? Outlook Readers Are!

Text by Robert F. Smith Photos by Lisa Muzzey, Pam Crowley, Deborah Collier and Sandy Andrus This past weekend’s cold and rain contrasted sharply with sunny weather that has reached into the 80’s in recent weeks – all part of the pain and pleasure that is April weather in northern New England. Readers and staff here at the Outlook have been keeping us posted with signs of spring, including flowers in Bellows Falls, top left, and in Westminster, bottom right, a bluebird in Rockingham, top right, and a swan in Keene, NH. As mud season winds down into spring, these sights will become more common, but feel free to send us more photos of the signs of the changing seasons.

News, Notes & Announcements for the Rockingham Region RFPL Program on Homeopathy Kurn Hattin Hosts Benefit 5K on May 1st On Wednesday, April 21 at 7 p.m., the Rockingham Free Public Library welcomes Julian Jonas, local homeopath and acupuncturist, who will present a slide show with stories about his travels, studies and work in India. A healthcare practitioner specializing in homeopathy for 30 years, Jonas has lived, studied, worked and traveled in Japan, Taiwan, Sri Lanka and India. Walpole Farmers Market Seeks Vendors The Walpole Farmers Market, which opens on Friday, May 21 invites potential vendors to inquire about joining the Market. The mission of the WFM is “to support the production and consumption of local products, increase awareness of the value of these products, expand the market for them, and help foster sustainable practices.” It will be “a growers market” featuring primarily agricultural products grown and produced in Walpole and nearby towns by the people who sell them. Prepared food and craft vendors will round out the market. The WFM will be held on Fridays from 3 – 6 p.m. on the Walpole Town Common. More information, the WFM guidelines, and a vendor application form are available on the WFM website, www.walpolefarmersmarket.com, and from Jill Robinson at 603-756-3168 or jill@walpolefarmersmarket.com.

Parents & Educators Writers’ Workshop There will be a Boot Camp for Educators, Parents and Writers workshop on Sunday, May 2 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Rockingham Art and Museum Project at 7 Canal Street in Bellows Falls. Although essential, writing remains elusive to many young students today. With everything from video games & TV culture to standardized testing getting in our way as teachers, it is frustrating to navigate the turbulent cultural waters that surround our youth and pull them under. Yet language, particularly the written word, remains the key to a student’s sense of self and empowerment. How do we inspire them? Contrary to the way writing is usually taught, non-verbal and visual thinking are employed in Izzo’s method the result of which is often a more enjoyable and creative writing experience. By donation (suggested $30 or what you can afford), free for public school teachers, employees of Youth Services Inc. and youth workers participating in Voices Teen Radio. All proceeds from this workshop will be used to support Voices Teen Radio 2010. For more information or to enroll contact Kristen Fehrenbach at 463-3330 or at openart@greatriverarts.org.

Penny Sale Time!

Story by Joe Milliken - Sports Editor Photos by Doug MacPhee In a nail-biter, visiting Bellows Falls Union High School jumped out to an early two-run lead in the top of the first, then held off the Cosmos, 3-2, in local baseball action in Springfield. Cooper Long got the start for the Terriers, scattering three hits and just one run while striking out three over six innings to get the win, while Jeremy Kilburn pitched the seventh to get the save, giving up one run and striking out one. The Terriers got their two runs in the first inning, triggered by a Corbin Parker double, but Cosmos starter Derek Osborne settled down after the rough first inning, allowing just two more hits over the next

However, Osborne also surrendering the gamewinning run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Brandon Hackett after Cooper Long had drawn a walk. Springfield scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on a triple from Brandon Boyle and a RBIsacrifice fly from Ethan McAllister to get within a run, but Kilburn shut the door after that to nail down the win for Long. "Pitching kept us in the ball game and our defense also played very well,” Bellows Falls coach Bob Lockerby told reporters after the game. ‘And we got just enough offense generated to get the win.”

Direct from New York City, Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra will make an appearance at Main Street Arts in Saxtons River on Friday, May 7 at 8 p.m. A favorite of New York’s downtown club scene, Lipton and his group play a brand of Alternative Americana that has been compared to the music of Randy Newman, Leon Redbone and Tom Waits. With melancholy wit and a hilariously cockeyed worldview, sepia-toned singer-songwriter Lipton and his bandmates Eben Levy, Ian Riggs and Vito Dieterle deliver songs steeped in mixed-message sincerity and soul. News, Notes & Announcements for the Ludlow Region Change the World Kids in Proctorsville The Cavendish Community and Conservation Association will sponsor a presentation on Wednesday, April 28 at 6 p.m. by a group of kids from an organization based in Woodstock called Change The World Kids (www.changetheworldkids.org) who will discuss their mission and their work. The presentation will be held at Crows Bakery on Depot Street in Proctorsville. They are an energetic group of middle and high school age youth undertaking humanitarian and environmental efforts to make a positive difference in local communities and across the globe. They have a wide variety of interests, talents, and personalities, and go to different schools, but they share a dream. Formed ten years ago in the Upper Valley area of Vermont, they became a non-profit corporation in 2003. Now chapters of Change the World Kids are forming across the United States. They get together to help individuals in their community with activities such as weatherizing homes, cutting brush and stacking wood. They also look beyond the borders of their own town to other communities both in this country and afar. Projects to help preserve the rain forest in Costa Rica and to raise funds for the relief efforts in Haiti are some of the endeavors they have undertaken. Come and find out more about who they are and what they do. Come and be inspired. Beverages and cookies will be served. For more information contact Robin Timko at 226-7736.

An Outdoor Meal That Combines Flavor & Fun Submitted by North American Precis Syndicate Experts say all you need for a picnic is good food, good company and a little creativity. For example, if you don't have a picnic basket or cooler, use old book bags lined with cold packs to carry your feast. When it comes to having fun, go back to basics with board games, Frisbees, cards and imagination. Play games such as charades or hide-andseek or form teams and play softball or dodgeball. Make the menu a team effort as well, with each

guest contributing a dish or a beverage. This seven-layer pasta salad combines a variety of flavors and textures into a winning picnic dish. Plus, it can be made at least a day ahead and customized to your family's taste. In this case, the seven layers of flavor are enhanced by the addition of a heart-healthy salsa or ranch dressing. The success of this 7Layer Pasta Salad comes with each layer contributing a different taste or texture. One manufacturer, Litehouse Foods, makes

a variety of refrigerated dressings, dips and more in small batches without preservatives, MSG or trans fats. They use canola oil, which is recommended by the American Heart Association as part of a heart-healthy diet. For more great salad ideas, please visit www.30salads30days.co m. Seven -Layer Pasta Salad (Serves 8) 1 cup fresh spinach 3 cups medium shell pasta, cooked, drained 1 large red onion, sliced thin (optional) 1 package (10 oz.) frozen peas, thawed,

drained 6 oz. ham or turkey, 1inch cubes 1 cup Litehouse Lite Ranch or Salsa Ranch Dressing 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes Layer spinach, pasta, onion, peas and ham (or turkey) in a large serving bowl. Get In The Game A View On Sports By Editor Joe Milliken

High School Action There was plenty of local high school action over the last week, so lets get to it. The two-time Div. III baseball state champion Leland & Gray Rebels recently kicked off their season with a bang, traveling to Ludlow and shutting out the Black River Presidents, 13-0. Rebels senior starter Gabe Pozzi led the way to victory from the mound, pitching six shutout innings to get the win, while striking out 11 batters along the way. Senior catcher Tyler Russell led the offensive charge, going 4-5 with double, home run, three RBI's and three runs

scored. The game was actually close for a while as Black River senior starter Chris Kawalski gave up just two runs in four innings, but the Rebels busted out for six runs in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth to blow the game open. Pozzi also helped his own cause with a double and triple, while Colin Nystrom and Zach Peterson pitched in with two hits each. --------------------------Staying in Ludlow, the Black River Lady Presidents softball team fared much better against the Lady Rebels, handing Leland & Gray their first loss of the year with an impressive, 12-1 victory. Amanda Chambers went the distance for Black River, giving up no earned runs and four hits, while striking out six along the way. Chambers also helped her own cause with an RBI-single. Offensively for the Lady Presidents, Sam Norton had three hits,

Tina Valente added two, while Kaitlyn Palmer and Zoe Trimboli each scored three runs. The win put Black River at 4-0 on the season, while Leland & Gray suffered their first loss in falling to 3-1 on the season. --------------------------In Chester, the Green Mountain Lady Chieftains improved their record to 4-0 with a 6-4 win over Mill River. Green Mountain senior Sara Groshens went the distance for the win while scattering four hits. Ashley Ralston paced the Lady Chief offense with two hits and three RBI's while Jenny Kennedy and Bailey Stauffer each had runscoring doubles. -------------------------Staying in Chester, the Green Mountain baseball team recently suffered their first loss of the season, dropping an 8-6 decision to Mill River. Jason Albert got the start for Green Mountain

and took the loss, giving up seven hits and four earned runs, while striking out seven and walking one over five innings. Mike Cavacas pitched the final two innings, retiring six straight batters while striking out four. The key factor in the Green Mountain loss however was the defense, committing six errors which led to four unearned runs. "We just didn't play well," GM coach Eric Anderson told reporters after the game. "They took advantage of what we gave them and we gave them a lot." Albert was also the offense stand out for the Chiefs, hitting a pair of home runs. --------------------------In Springfield, Lady Cosmos starter Ashley Richardson gave up three runs in the first inning to Bellows Falls, but then settled down and gave up only one hit the rest of the way in a 13-3 Springfield win over the Lady Terriers.

Offensively, the Lady Cosmos got contributions up and down the line up as nine different players hit safely, with key hits coming from Kristen Cook (basesloaded triple) and Eibhilin Whittemore (two-run single). Emma Shaw and Megan LaBeau got the two Terrier hits. NFL Draft, Playoffs The NFL draft is upon us, with many interesting questions surfacing around the league because not only is it believed to be the deepest draft in years, but a couple of potential high, first-round quarterbacks are coming off injuries, that have left questions about whether they could be "damaged goods." Will the St. Louis Rams, who have the number-one pick and need a franchise quarterback, draft former Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford, who is coming off major shoulder surgery? Will former Notre

Dame signal-caller Jimmy Clausen go in the first round? How about Texas QB Colt McCoy, as some draft boards have him going in the first round, while others think he’s a second round talent. Drafting a quarterback is probably the most important draft day decision a team can make. Choose the wrong quarterback and it can set a franchise back for years. -------------------------The NBA and NHL playoffs are under way and both the Celtics and Bruins look to fight their way out of the first round. After losing Game One in Buffalo, the Bruins bounced back with a big, come-from-behind win over the Sabres in Game Two to even the series heading back to Boston. Meanwhile the Celtics, who took the first game of their series against Miami, lost Kevin Garnett for Game Two after he threw an elbow in a tussle.

Create a Successful Vegetable Garden

Edible gardening will continue to be a popular trend this year, according to a recent survey by the Garden Writers Association. More than 41 million U.S. households grew a vegetable garden last year and 37 percent plan to do more edible gardening in 2010. (Only 1 percent planned to plant less this year.) A combination of factors is driving the trend: The desire to consume locally grown foods and save money as well as Gen X and Y consumers embracing the idea of self-sufficiency. Add the year-old White House vegetable garden to the mix and seed companies tapping into reserves to keep up with demand and you’ve got a gardening boom. “In this economy, everyone is looking for a way to make their money go farther,” says Bayer Advance Garden Expert Lance Walheim, author of “Vegetable Gardening.” “Growing your own healthy vegetables in your garden is a great way to re-

duce your grocery bill while creating a nutritious supply of food from your own backyard.” Here are a few tips on making the most of your backyard vegetable garden: • Choose your veggies: Do your homework on seed, plant and variety options, and involve your family in the selection. • Pick a sunny spot for your garden: Most vegetables need six to eight hours of direct sun each day. The area you choose should drain well, but will still benefit from the addition of lots of organic matter, so you have the best growing conditions. • Mark your rows: Use string to mark off the individual rows of vegetables you’ll plant and make plans for irrigation. Remember that rows running east to west will get the best sun exposure. • Add mulch and fertilize: Mulch your rows to keep weeds from popping up and fertilize regularly. • Protect against pests and diseases: Insecticidal soap protects your vegetable garden against pests such as aphids, thrips, spider mites and white- flies, as well as diseases such as blight and powdery mildew, among others. Be sure to read and follow all label directions. Growing your own vegetables is a great way to reduce your grocery bill.
