JournalismClub Club visits visits real Journalism real newspaper newspaper By Thomas LeClair - Grade 5
Have you ever wondered what it is like going to a place where they make newspapers? Well today you will learn about the field trip we took to where they make The Sun newspaper. We learned about how they make the newspaper, edit the newspaper and, write the newspaper. The person who showed us around even showed us how to make the newspaper come alive (I will explain in a little bit). First I will tell you how they make the newspaper. The reporters start out by writing stories and the designers start putting ads together. Then, when the stories and the ads are done, they go into a room where there is a machine that makes sure there are no mistakes in the stories or ads. Then to print the newspaper they use a big machine to color the paper. The colors have to be lined up perfectly to have the color come out perfectly. Then the newspaper comes out of the machine.
That’s how they make the newspaper. They also have to edit the newspaper. They edit the newspaper by people and machines. The reporters give their articles to the editors and the editors edit the article for the newspaper. The machine part of it is when there is a bad copy of the newspaper the machine is able to detect it and the machine automatically throws the copy away. The reporters write long stories about what happens. The newspaper comes out with all the news. The reporters write all of the stories, news, and whatever else happens during the day or days before that one. That is who writes the stories. The person who was showing us around also showed us how you can make the newspaper come ALIVE!!!!!! He said that there was an app that can make a person talk when

you point the camera at them which I thought was insane. He said that the app lets a person speak to you. All you have to do is download an app and the next time you get the newspaper, all you have to do is click a button on the app and point
the camera at the person and that person will speak to you. We all had a lot of fun down at the newspaper center. If you get the chance to visit I would recommend you go to The Sun newspaper center. To sum up the trip, we all learned a lot and had a lot of fun.
The History of voting of in the USA The History voting in the USA By Porter Goodman - Grade 5
If you want to vote in the U.S.A you must be 18 years old, and a U.S citizen. Voting is a privilege to those who are able to give their opinion on something or someone. Voting goes back to the early Jamestown voyages in the 1600’s. In the 1800’s the
fifteenth Amendment was signed making it official that people regardless of race or color were given the right to vote. On August 18, 1920 women were allowed to vote.

The Keeseville Times
From the Publisher
Dear Readers, Thank you for looking through and reading our first, redesigned, issue of The Keeseville Times student-run newspaper. The students in the Journalism Club have worked hard to finish this issue and are very proud of their achievements. This is the most pages our newspaper has ever been and with the help from the school and our advertisers we are able to present this entire issue to you in full color. Without our advertisers this would not have been possible. An extra thank you goes out to Sun Community News (Denton Publications) in Elizabethtown for printing this on their Heat Set Digital Printer for us. We appreciate your help with getting this out to our readers. For those who don’t know, the Journalism Club is a volunteer-run club at Keeseville Elementary School. The students write the articles, help sell advertisements, design advertisements, and design pages. It is a full learning experience for all, including myself! We hope you enjoy our first issue. In the lives of teachers Mrs. Facteau
By Preston Rein - Grade 5 Mrs. Facteau is a sixth grade teacher that used to teach first grade in Ausable. She wanted to teach because she loved learning and wanted to share that experience with children. What she likes most about teaching is the different personalities of the students she has. Her birthday is April 7th, 1969. Some of her favorite hobbies are four wheeling, camping, shopping, reading and arts and crafts. The sports she used to play were softball and soccer. One of her favorite foods is lasagna. She went to Plattsburgh State university and had a major in math and education. The town she grew up in was right here in Keesville and

she was an only child. When asked if she had any pets, she told me she used to have a dog named Bear. If you have any other questions, contact Mrs. Facteau in her classroom at the end of the sixth grade hallway.
Ms. Casey
By Scott LaMountain - Grade 5 Ms. Casey is an awesome teacher but we don’t know enough about her so I set up an interview with her and here are some questions and answers I got from her. One of the questions that I asked Ms. Casey was, “What is your favorite dodgeball game we play on a game day?” What her answer was, “My favorite dodgeball game we play is probably EMT, and you will be playing this game this year.” My second question that I asked, “What is your favorite mascot?” And what Ms. Casey said was, “My favorite mascot is Orange from Syracuse.” The last question that I asked her was, “When did you start going to K.E.S?”

Ms. Slattery is a teacher in our school who loves to teach. Unfortunately Ms. Slattery is retiring this year. I wanted to interview Ms. Slattery because I want people to know Ms. Slattery and
what she likes to do in free time, at school, and with her family. I have learned this while I have been in her class. SHE LOVES BASKETBALL!!!! So some of my questions have to do with basketball. The first question is, who your favorite basketball team is, she answered, the LA Lakers. The second question is, how long have you been teaching. She answered the question with 33 years, but she is retiring this year. The third question is, what do you like to do with your family. She answered go on hikes, travel to different places, and play sports with them. The final question is what do you like to do with your free time. She likes to read, visit her family, travel, and play pickle ball. These are things that Ms. Slattery likes to do.

What Is Emo Subculture? By Kailee Betters— Grade 5
The emo style has been around since the late 1980’s or early 1990’s. There are two reasons why people become emo. One reason people become emo is the style. Most emo wear dark colored clothing. Some of the colors include: black, purple, grey, dark blue, and pink. The sec-
ond and last reason people become emo is emotional, which is usually caused by loss of a friend or loved one. Another part of the style is the hair which is usually a piece of the person’s hair, over their eye and their hair is colored or it can be their
natural hair color. I did an interview with a student, who is also emo. I asked her when she became emo and she said when she was nine. I also asked her what does she like most about emo culture and she said she loves wear-
ing dark colors. Finally, I asked her what are your thoughts about being emo? She said that she was worried if people were going to judge her. Emo culture, I’d have to say, is pretty COOL!!!

By Kylee Bresett - Grade 5 Once upon a time there lived a dragon that was on the Dark Side. He was called Dooka. He was the master of all Dark Side Dragons! Dooka loved that everyone from the Dark Side was his slaves, but he wasn’t completely satisfied. Dooka wanted to be the ruler of every dragon in the West, and soon, every dragon in the world. So, he declared war with the Good Dragons of the West by sending a messenger with a letter. Neketh, Higler, and Pheina are all members of the Good Dragons of the West and Larduh is the leader. Unlike Dooka, she doesn’t boss everyone around. Larduh and her friends don’t like watching Dooka’s villagers treated unfairly so they are determined to change that. After Larduh received the letter, she knew that she had to win this war or all the villagers of mythical life would die under Dooka’s rule. So, she thought about it for a while and then called Neketh, Higler, and Pheina to have a meeting. “Now, I have called a meeting because Dooka has declared war,” said Larduh. “What?” exclaimed Neketh. “Oh come on Neketh, we knew it was going to happen sooner or later,” announced Pheina. “Yea, Pheina’s right. All of our war members have been ready for this kind of thing to happen for months,” Higler stated. “Yes, we have been ready. Neketh, do you think we’re ready? I mean you are a member of our organization, so it’s your call,” Larduh said. “Well, I don’t know. I mean we haven’t had practice drills like this in a long time. So I don’t think anyone really knows, but the soldiers,” remarked Neketh. “Neketh does have a point, you know,” Pheina agreed. “Yes, I suppose so. Should we do a practice drill? Dooka’s note states that he is not going to begin war until a week from now so we
still have the time if they don’t think they’re ready. I mean, the soldiers do need their confidence,” said Larduh. The villagers agreed. “So, I suppose we make some plans.” So they all made plans which included training the soldiers and building their confidence. They built more weapons, made sturdier hideouts, and most importantly recruited more soldiers. They added ten more soldiers which meant a lot more help for the community. By now you’re probably wondering why the slaves over at the Dark Side simply don’t move over to the Good Side. Well, it goes back to ancient times when they wrote the mythical dragon law which states that dragons are not to move unless their current territory has lost battle and you survive, but that last part, about you not being dead thing, is kind of obvious. So now the battle begins… As leader, Larduh announces, “Pheina on the right. Higler on the left and Neketh charge with me in the middle.” “Alright, Larduh.” Larduh continues, “Now fight! Everyone charge towards the middle and then make your way outside. Oh no, they’re all coming towards the middle. Neketh and I can’t take all of those soldiers,” said Larduh. But, it was too late. Larduh didn’t see it happen and tons and tons of soldiers had tied her in a net. She was on the ground feeling dizzy. She tried getting up and flying, but there was a sword stuck in her wing. Neketh told Higler and Pheina to go to the middle and finish the fight while he took care of Larduh. He flew over to her and took the sword out with his teeth. Neketh then threw her on his back and flew to their nursing hideout. There, he took the net off and covered up Larduh’s
wound. Meanwhile Higler and Pheina wiped out like five soldiers at a time and the other soldiers were doing great too. The Good Side had only two wounded. All of a sudden, Neketh and Larduh burst back out and Higler gave them a report. “The Dark Side only has about twenty soldiers left, but Dooka is trying to kill all of our guards. He just wiped out ten of them. However, we are still winning.” That’s when the Dark Side’s revenge happened. Dooka had saved other soldiers to bring out for when they were running low on soldiers and the Good Side only had Larduh, Neketh, Pheina, and Higler remaining. It was difficult, but they managed to get down to four soldiers and Dooka on the Dark Side. Then, Pheina and Higler did a power move and all of the soldiers were wiped out and died. With just Dooka left, Larduh and Neketh knew they had to put their powers together to defeat him. It worked and he was injured but it wasn’t over. It would take all of the dragons to put their powers together to kill him and free the dragon slaves! When this happened, Dooka said the eight words that every villain says when they are defeated in dragon wars. Those words were, “You will regret this Dragons of the West!” Then, every dragon was safe and sound because Dooka was defeated; or was he?! Legend has it that Dooka still lives in the woods waiting for the right time to strike and get his revenge on the Dragons of the West!

ORDINARY HEROES A September 11th story.
By Aila Dame - Grade 5
Y
ou probably already know that on September 11, 2001 the Twin Towers were burnt down by terrorists, a group of people who do very bad things. It was a normal day in Manhattan and people were going to work and school like any other day, but it was not. An airplane crashed into the Twin Towers and caught on fire. Many people died and tons of people screamed as they tried to run out of the Twin Towers. Everyone was trying to leave the area, but how could they with the trains, tunnels and bridges closed down? Did you know that Manhattan is an island? A little known fact about September 11th is that on that day, in less than nine
hours, almost 500,000 people left Manhattan by boat. This was the largest water evacuation in history. By comparison, there was a water evacuation in 1940 when about 350,000 Allied soldiers were evacuated by boat from Dunkirk, France during World War II, and that took nine days. How could so many people have left Manhattan in less than nine hours? The answer is that ordinary people did extraordinary things that day. The Coast Guard asked for help from anyone listening that had a boat. Hundreds of ordinary people responded and risked their own lives by
bringing their boats to Manhattan and transporting people away from the island. Normally boats are only allowed to take a certain amount of people, but the Coast Guard told the boat owners they could take as many as they could safely fit. The first responders that went to the Twin Towers were trained police officers, firefighters and ambulance workers. Most of the boat owners had no special training in evacuations and no one was in charge of the whole effort. People just did what needed to be done. So even though you may never get a call asking for help from the Coast Guard, if you listen carefully and look around, you will find many opportunities to be an ordinary hero to someone in need.
