ELIZABETHTOWN | Essex County Board of Supervisors honored two law enforcement officers for a swift, selfless and courageous response to the Ticonderoga Country Club fire that destroyed Emeralds Restaurant in late May. Essex County Sheriff Deputy Kaycee Kolodzey, of Moriah, and Ticonderoga Police Department Patrolman Dennis Towne went into the restaurant as smoke started pouring from the kitchen. Flames were just starting to erupt from what was apparently a propane tank explosion in the kitchen. Essex County Sheriff Richard C. Cutting addressed the full board with the writ approved by the Public Safety Committee in June. “They repeatedly went into the building and got people out,” Cutting told the supervisors. “They put their personal safety and wherewithal aside.” The two officers then accounted for all guests, and secured and maintained safety watch at the fire scene as firefighters fought the blaze. » Officers honored Cont. on pg. 2

The 15 graduates of Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School’s Class of 2018 honored U.S. Army Veteran John B. Elser as a legacy gift. Elser was one of 11 graduates in 1938 -- 80 years ago -- and fought in the Battle of the Hedgerows at Normandy. The brass plate will be placed on the Memorial Wall at the Essex County Veterans Cemetery.
ELIZABETHTOWN | At graduation, the Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School Class of 2018 had a special gift for a late local veteran. The lifelong resident of Elizabethtown, John B. Elser Jr., who served in World War II, has no remaining family here, but his
The Class of 2018 did not forget. They reached out months ago to the Veteran’s Affairs office here to see if they might find a way to show appreciation for a local veteran. And Veteran’s Affairs Office Coordinator Sara Smith started to search. “It was the 80th high school graduation ceremony in Elizabethtown this year, so we looked to see who graduated 80 years ago, knowing that it would have been World War II era veterans. I was able to find 11 graduates from 1938,” Smith said. » Veteran gift Cont. on pg. 5

» Officers honored Cont. from pg. 1 “It is certain that these officers saved several people from serious injury or death that evening,” Cutting read from the formal commendation, presented on plaques to each officer. Both Kolodzey and Towne attended the full board meeting last Monday. “The actions of (Kolodzey and Towne) were courageous, selfless and admirable and prove and demonstrate the true character of our law enforcement personnel,” Cutting said. Cutting explained that Kolodzey just happened to be in the area when fire broke out and responded immediately, reaching the country club even before emergency medical personnel and firefighters.

A wedding reception was getting underway that night, near 10 p.m., with two buses of 50 people preparing to celebrate. Cutting said one of the buses had made a mistake and brought people to the hotel property first. The other bus — with 50 wedding guests — had delivered people to the restaurant. “It could have been so much worse,” Cutting said, “if these officers hadn’t done what they did.” For her part, Kolodzey said she was just acting from training and instinct. “There was smoke in the kitchen, but the flames hadn’t erupted yet. We got everyone out and made sure no one was missing.” And Towne, who is also a member of the

The presentation featured remarks from Sheriff Richard C. Cutting. Ticonderoga Volunteer Fire Department, took action based on his training. “We helped get people to safety,” he said. Supervisors at the full board meeting loudly applauded the officers. Board of Supervisors Chairman Randy Preston expressed gratitude for their bravery. “We know these days that being a police officer is a very tough job,” Preston said. “Thank you for your service.” The fire on May 26 destroyed the Emeralds Restaurant and the country club building, despite best efforts from 17 fire departments, over 100 fire response personnel, four

The employees have since been treated and released from area hospitals. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, according to Ticonderoga fire officials, but it has not considered suspicious. Building owners Mark and Erin Wood plan to rebuild. The Ticonderoga Golf Course has continued to operate minus its club house and pro shop. ■

STAKEHOLDERS REACT
Actions along the Route 73 corridor commenced by the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) during the July 4 holiday week included: • Striping parking spots in designated parking lots; • Increasing the number of portable bathrooms along the corridor; • Installing kiosks along the corridor that provide information on nearby, under-utilized alternate hiking opportunities; • Installing electronic variable messaging boards directing hikers to the kiosks, including at King Phillips Spring Pull-off (Northway Exit 30), Marcy Field in Keene and Olympic Regional Development Authority’s Mt. Van Hoevenberg Olympic Sports Complex; • Installing displays which provide information on nearby underutilized alternate hiking opportunities at the Northbound High Peaks Rest Area and Lake Placid Visitor Information Center. The DEC will also begin steering visitors to less-trafficked destinations in the Adirondack Park and will begin phasing out roadside parking around popular trailheads towards the end of the month. The High Peaks, Dix, Giant and Hurricane Wildernesses, Baxter Mountain and the Saranac Lake 6’er peaks have all attracted an “unprecedented number of users” in recent years, said the DEC.
Over the five-day period from July 4 through July 8, approximately 1,500 hikers — roughly 300 per day — signed in at the Cascade and Porter Mountain trailhead, according to the DEC. While Adirondack Wilderness Advocates co-founder Brendan Wiltse welcomed the changes, he questioned their execution. A pair of electronic displays directed guests into Mt. Van Hoevenberg to get more info. But guests were greeted with a single interpretive display which generated bewilderment amongst visitors, he said. “What I’ve heard is visitors are confused and staff frustrated that they can’t give people the info they’re looking for,” Wiltse told The Sun on Sunday. “I think it could have been executed better.” The Adirondack Council cheered the changes, but called for a parking reservation system to be included in the proposed updates to the High Peaks Unit Management Plans (UMP). “The state is taking important first steps in managing successful tourism in the Adirondacks,” said Adirondack Council Executive Director William C. Janeway in a statement. “We are encouraged by this progress. But more is needed to protect water quality and wildlife from being loved to death. Some of the most popular hiking and camping destinations are located in the park’s most fragile and sensitive landscapes.”

Keene Supervisor Joe Pete Wilson said it’s important to be mindful that the initial safeguards are the first in a series of many possible longterm solutions. “I’ve very supportive of what the DEC is trying to do, and I’m working with them to develop their information system and reach hikers and help them be more informed,” Wilson said. Stakeholders must also educate visitors in other areas, including taking care of their health, those of their pets and how to camp properly and otherwise be prepared for the outdoors. “We can’t not start doing outreach and education,” Wilson said. “It’s just so desperately needed.” At a moment when so many eyes are on possible solutions, he admits education efforts are a moving target, and will scale up in accordance with available resources — like providing bilingual material at kiosks, for instance. “State agencies, partners and volunteers interacted with hundreds of visitors over the holiday and into the weekend,” said Benning Delamater, a DEC spokesman. “These efforts are just beginning and additional actions will continue to be implemented as our work continues through 2019 as part of a comprehensive effort to promote sustainable tourism and address public safety in the Adirondacks. The first phase of actions are underway, and we look forward to working with all partners to ensure these actions are communicated and implemented effectively.” ■

» Veteran gift Cont. from pg. 1 “I searched our records to see if any veterans were in that graduating class, and in that 11 was Mr. John B. Elser Jr., who lived in Elizabethtown. It just got better from there, honestly,” she said. “He was a World War II veteran and he spent three years overseas, part of that included fighting the D-Day invasion at Normandy,” Smith said. “He came back here, and married, and started a business, a home improvement company. His wife (Monica) was a teacher at the school for a few years. They both resided here until they passed.” Smith also found that John B. Elser Jr. had received a certificate of commendation, along with Staff Sgt. John Woljewodzic, of Port Henry, from Maj. General Charles H. Gerhardt for their participation in D-Day. and specifically in the Battle of the Hedgerows. The Record-Post on Thursday, Feb. 8, 1945 carried a news feature on letters presented to Elser Jr. and Wojewodzic “honoring them for fighting with the 29th Infantry Division from D-Day to St. Lo (The Battle of the Hedgerows).” The commendation was recounted in the Record-Post on Feb. 8, 1945, on page 8: “The honor is a personal salute from Maj. Gen. Charles H. Gerhardt to the officers and men who battered their way through flooded areas and the Normandy hedgerows and stormed the key city of St. Lo in a campaign where the taking

of every 500 yards was a major battle,” the news report said. “The army reckons the Normandy fight as one campaign which entitles participants to one star on their theatre ribbons, but General Gerhardt’s certificate recognized the unusual toughness of the fighting in the early days of the invasion. “The ‘Blue and Grey Division’ has won two unit citations and its members have been awarded 1,620 personal decorations since the outfit stormed the invasion beaches. The Infantry Regiment was cited for being the first unit into St. Lo.” Elser Jr. came home and married Monica R. Rasines, of Barre, Vermont. Mrs. Elser taught secretarial practice at Elizabethtown-Lewis High School for three years and was a private secretary for an Elizabethtown attorney. She was also bookkeeper/secretary for her husband’s business until he retired. He died here on April 10, 1999 at age 79. She died ten years ago. They are buried together in Riverside Cemetery. The couple had no children.

“They were so excited about doing this.” Family members, descendants or friends of veterans that wish to honor a service member can contact Smith at the Essex County Veteran’s office to find out more about the memorial markers. “That holds true for any information about the cemetery in general,” Smith said — This story has been abridged for print. The plaque that the ELCS Class of 2018 had engraved for World War II veteran John B. Elser will go on the Memorial Wall at the Essex County Veteran’s Cemetery in the coming weeks. At Veterans Affairs, Smith said the brass plates are affixed on the wall usually between Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day. She said the honorary gift from the Class of 2018 is touching in that recalls the service of a veteran who has no family left in this area. “They’re just a wonderful group,” Smith said of the Class of 2018.

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline
The SCOTUS Wars
As I write this column, President Trump has yet to announce his official nominee for the open position on By Dan Alexander the Supreme Court. • PUBLISHER • The president has narrowed down his finalists and once announced, the war of words, doom and candidate character assassination will begin. What is known at this time is approximately 45 percent of the country is outraged by the selection, another 45 percent couldn’t be more pleased and approximately 10 percent doesn’t know there is an opening and could care less that we even have a Supreme Court, let alone understand what their role in the country is all about. It’s comforting to know that things are so predictable here in the land of the free and home of the brave. I hope you understand, I am being sarcastic. There really is no other way to approach what we are about to go through. Over the past few Supreme Court appointments, the skirmishes have been relatively mild compared to what will take place in this current environment. The anger and in-your-face battle that will set the tone this time around will be epic as both sides appear to be dug-in for the duration. This appointment and perhaps the next will shape the court if not the country for the next several decades. The left has made it clear that no candidate nominated by this president is acceptable despite all having been overwhelmingly approved for the lower court positions they now hold. The right has made it clear they do not want an activist jurist but a pure constitutionalist who will adhere to interpretation of the constitution, versus legislating from the bench. Given the current political climate, these hearings could well set the stage for an even greater period of stepped up resistance and violence across the nation. It’s hard to see how this SCOTUS confirmation battle can do anything but divide the country even further than we already are, especially if the opposing senators refuse to give the nominee a fair hearing. Optimistically, we can hope that through a fair confirmation process both sides can be heard and the nominee is sufficiently skilled to win over popular public opinion as being fair, compassionate, and well above politics. How this all plays out will set the tone for the national political demeanor for many years to come. ■

The Sun Editorial
Give early High Peaks overuse measures a chance The High Peaks are groaning under the weight of an unprecedented surge of tourism. Sure, our new pals are spending money in local communities. But with their sunny social media hashtags comes an uptick in traffic accidents, parking fiascos, searchand-rescue operations and piles of waste left on the mountaintops. As a result of the mounting problems, the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) introduced a pilot project ahead of the July 4 holiday weekend to tamp down on public safety issues along the popular Route 73 corridor stretching from Keene to Lake Placid. The initial actions include “striping” lots to better delineate parking, increasing the number of Port-O-Potties and installing educational kiosks to steer visitors elsewhere, as well as flashing electronic boards pointing to their existence. The DEC will also further limit roadside parking in additional areas to improve the line of sight for motorists. These are all good, common-sense solutions that are long overdue considering the horror stories have been stacking up for years. While some skeptics were quick to criticize the effectiveness of the actions over the weekend, the DEC and other stakeholders involved in the efforts should be commended for being proactive. Obviously, some kinks need to be worked

Truth must have absolutes
To the Editor: I appreciated Dan Alexander’s June 23 (op-ed) on truth. However, I found his conclusion inadequate. Good common sense includes wisdom, discernment along with good judgment and must have love as its foundation (where do we see this today)? In fact, the present downward plunge of our nation would prove that man does not have, in himself, much common sense. Truth is elusive because it has both a spiritual and moral dimension to it. It goes beyond mere intellectual knowledge and therefore must have elements of faith based on results of the outworking of this faith. Truth must have absolutes to it, or there is no one truth. We teach our kids today that truth is relative and varies with

out — we’re not entirely sure kiosks are enough to convince people to forgo their debut trip up Algonquin— and the state agency has admitted this is the first in series of proposed measures to promote sustainable visitation. But we also cannot underestimate the effectiveness of educational outreach and social media campaigns. A stakeholder pointed out that often this guest misbehavior — the illegal parking, the erratic driving, the eroded and environmentally-decimated trails with poo everywhere — is a result of ignorance, and ongoing and prolonged education for these visitors by the community will likely be needed in order for bad habits to be culled. This week is sure to be full of fast-moving developments. The Adirondack Park Agency and DEC are currently reviewing draft Unit Management Plan (UMP) amendments for the High Peaks Wilderness and Vanderwhacker Mountain Wild Forest Areas. If approved, larger changes will be on the way, including the permanent relocation of the Cascade and Porter mountain trailhead to the nearby Mt. Van Hoevenberg complex, as well as creation of a new trail up Mt. Van Hoevenberg by Columbus Day Weekend in October. Those are good ideas. So are the ones presented by environmental groups, including the implementation of
the situation. It must have a moral dimension to it or it does not operate for the good of man and therefore why seek it? It must have a spiritual level that is rooted in love, or truth can bring harm. But if it is ignored then man is not living in true reality and is faced with mental illness and the society becomes sick. Relationship based on truth keeps us healthy. Technology is destroying true relationship. Quite the contrary, man does not honestly seek truth. Truth when sought with the whole heart usually entails much pain as our ivory towers get pulled down and we face our worst enemy: self. Jesus claims to be the truth and that the truth will set us free. With the abandonment of something greater than ourselves, we each live in bondage: be it to self, others or some evil as we let these things define our live and ourselves. You see once true identity is lost and we let ourselves be defined by lies, we

a permit system for hikers, presented by the Adirondack Wild, and a parking reservation system, offered by the Adirondack Council. Again, despite efforts to direct visitors elsewhere, the High Peaks will always be the main attraction, and asking outdoor adventurers to go somewhere else is akin to asking lovebirds to visit Paris but take a hard pass at going up the Eiffel Tower. The devil is obviously in the details, and we like the idea of multi-year test programs to see if these are ideas worth implementing on a permanent basis. We also agree with the Adirondack Council that the APA should give the DEC more time to weigh the UMPs to ensure compliance with the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan, the document that governs all land-use issues in the Adirondacks. The green group joins others who contend the APA accelerated the review process of the DEC’s plan without reacting to the public comments generated, a measure criticized by the nonprofit as an “administrative shortcut.” Considering how much is at stake, stepping on the brakes might not be a bad idea. Lastly, we’d be remiss if we didn’t echo the clarion call for the state to hire more forest rangers, who are on the frontlines grappling with these issues daily, performing heroic feats of rescue as stewardship falls by the wayside. — The Sun Editorial Board ■

Trump Supreme Court pick will spark battle over abortion
To the Editor: Well, the president gets to pick another replacement for a retiring judge on the Supreme Court. This will be a battle about abortion and nothing else. It doesn’t matter if the pick is a good person or has had good well reasoned rulings from the bench. I find it a bit shameful that killing the unborn is so important to Democrats. Think about it. They demand the right to kill the innocent. Now I don’t give a rat’s back side what a woman does with her

body. She can sell it, tattoo it, pierce it or what else she choses to do. But this is where the fly in the ointment comes in. The baby growing inside her is not her body. It belongs to someone else. All the science is on this side. If it was her body, the DNA would be the same, but it’s not! Why is it a right to kill your unborn baby? Someday we may have an honest discussion about this, but I fear it will never happen because there are too many truths that have to be faced on both sides. I would put money on it. That any response to this letter will start with rape and incest. Which has nothing to do with what I have written here. I’m talking about the baby and that’s all. Attorney general headlines are a political hit job
To the Editor: I didn’t vote for Donald Trump and watching national TV almost borders on tedium as things are more like a political world wrestling match than the modern America I grew up in. However, the recent headline-grabbing action by the acting New York attorney general has all the fingerprints of a political hit job. I know from personal knowledge that there was some pretty funny business in the past in Westport over the two cottages resold out of the Ballard Park Foundation to the tune of maybe $700,000 and the sidetracking of the charitable bequest of the Kobel farm by Camp Dudley must have reaped well over a million. As I recall, all these episodes of selfdealing reaped a collective yawn from the IRS, so go figure. William Kuntz III, Elizabethtown ■
Trump takes undeserved credit for Obama economy
To the Editor: For an unprecedented 104 consecutive months, the economy has grown. Trump has been president for only the last 18 of those months, and yet incomprehensibly, he is claiming complete and sole responsibility for the state of the economy. Full-scale (and fallacious) denigration of “President Obama’s economy” ranks high on the list of talking-points-du-jour for Trump
show includes paintings, prints, collage, drawings, fabric arts, photography, pottery and more. The silent auction bids will be accepted during those open hours until July 31, 7 p.m., with a percentage of auction sale proceeds benefits Heritage House. The exhibit and auction conclude with a “Meet the Artist”
and his followers. The president constantly touts the unemployment-rate as one of his most impressive accomplishments. This might be so for some, but the data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics tell a different story. The unemployment-rate was 7.8 and rising when Barack Obama came into office. It peaked 10 months later at 10 and has steadily declined since. At Trump’s inauguration, the rate was 4.8 and has fallen to 3.8 over the past 18 months. Perhaps Mr. Trump can crow for having “caused” the one-point reduction, but the lion’s share (83 percent) of the credit for the declining unemployment-rate is Obama’s. Another of Trump’s claims concerning Obama’s economy is that the GDP growth-rate was anemic…between one and two percent. Once again, the facts indicate otherwise. According to the U. S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, in the first quarter of 2009 the economy was shrinking at a rate of -1.94 percent. Th is decline continued, reaching -3.19 percent in the second quarter of 2009. It then began to grow steadily, “spiking” at 5.21 percent in the 3rd quarter of 2014. This growth continued until the 4th quarter of 2016. The average quarterly GDP growth-rate throughout Obama’s presidency was 3.01 percent. When, in a truly fair and balanced manner, all relevant factors are considered, one can only conclude that, for many of us, this present economy — Obama’s economy — is performing well. Let us all pray that Trump and his followers will allow it to continue to do so. John Maddix, Plattsburgh ■

Support your president!
To the Editor: Ed Pontacoloni, your guest viewpoint does not add up! We the American people elected Donald Trump as our president for a four-year term, he was duly elected by the rules and regulations overseeing a presidential election! The Sun Editorial Board should apply the same rules to their guest columnist as they do to the readers that send in letters. Allowing insults, name calling and nonfactual information should have voided this article in its entirety. There is nothing father from the truth than his article. Trump is a very strong and determined individual working harder than any president before him to reverse the damage done to America by the past misdeeds of previous presidents. He is responsible for the economy and paying the interest on the huge debt created and passed down by the Obama administration. In fact, his tax cut efforts have already shown improvements in the economy! His efforts to protect American interests and our allies have strengthened our relationships with other world powers. His “America First” and “Make America Great Again” attitude has sent a necessary message to the world, we the people of America will no longer carry the entire burden of everyone’s problems, so get off our backs! The racist policies of the previous administration have created the split in America and already the Trump agenda is showing signs of correcting these policies. As for the southern border, “build the wall” is the overwhelming message being sent to the administration via the American people! Immigrants are welcome via the existing laws, and we the people want them enforced. Violate our laws and you go to jail and will be returned to your homeland! Enter legally and you will be welcomed! As for Pontacoloni, wake up, get it straight and support your president! Bert Windle, Putnam ■

Scarlett is about two years old – well past the crazy antics of kittenhood but still young enough to be able to offer years of companionship and affection. She gets along well with other cats; we believe she would also be fine with a gentle dog. Scarlett is sweet, loving and would make an excellent addition to any family. Don’t miss out on this special little lady – come down today and add some tabby love to your life! ■ — Kat Wilcox’s weekly column works to publicize the shelter’s adoptable pets. The Puppet People and the Pitch Benders String Band join us “On the Center Lawn” this week. By Arin Burdo At 6 p.m. on • COLUMNIST • Tuesday, July 17, a professional touring puppet company out of Schenectady presents “The Last Dragon.” Are all princesses helpless? Are all knights brave and strong? Are all dragons evil? Find out in this whimsical retelling of the fairy tale by E. Nesbitt. Explore the issues of stereotypes, discrimination, self-esteem, greed and friendship with this vivid puppet production. This show features classical music, large rod puppets, mouth puppets, a seven-foot dragon and a life-size knight on horseback for a jousting scene the audience will never forget! Since 1994, The Puppet People have performed in over 3,000 shows and have delighted audiences young and old. Mark Carrigan and Michelle Smith-Carrigan have performed throughout the
country including the Lincoln Center in New York City. Michelle’s voice over work can be heard in many local and national commercials as well as in animation and online games. At 7 p.m., we bring back local favorite Pitch Benders String Band. The Pitch Benders String Band features local talent David Wyant with twelve string, finger-style guitar, harmonica, percussion and vocals and Heather Lamb on mandolin and vocals. They partner with Vermont neighbors Andrew Gorton on guitar, ukulele and vocals; David Hughes on bass, ukulele, and vocals; Charles “Skip” Smithson on mandolin and guitar and Barry Shoenwetter on lead guitar. The program will feature acoustic covers of many genres including blues, bluegrass, country, soft rock, folk and soul. They are known for their tight, smooth vocal harmonies. Enjoy dinner from Papa Duke’s BBQ during the shows. Do not forget your lawn chair. Performances will be held rain or shine. From 6:30-7 p.m., prior to concert,
the Writers’ Group will hold a series of readings of their works. They will present original poems, short stories, personal essays and excerpts of longer works. The Caregiver Support Initiative of SUNY Plattsburgh will offer “Dementia: Just Diagnosed, What’s Next?” on Wednesday, July 18 at 1 p.m. All are welcome! This session will review what to do if you or a loved one is diagnosed with dementia. They discuss feelings you may be having and how to talk to your friends and loved ones. They cover the next steps for home safety, driving and financial planning. This program helps those caring for a person with some form of memory loss. For more information, contact Danielle Hance, education specialist at the Alzheimer’s Disease Caregiver Support Initiative, at 518-564-3368.
