To prove it, Adirondack Harvest, a one-stop website for finding farms throughout the region, has teamed up with Cornell Co-operative Extension to put on the third annual Food from the Farm on Saturday, March 2 at the Plattsburgh City Gym.

Folk music with a twist at the Koffee Kat Marco Polio starts with Hall’s songwriting, and from there a rotating cast of collaborators join him both on recordings and on stage. The music Hall creates has a message that reflects the decisions he makes in life. “All my songs are about industrial civilization and technology and their effects on nature and the individual,” Hall said. Adhering to that message, Hall’s work with ROTA attempts to encourage people to interact with one another in the real world instead of online, and to connect people with local culture. “There aren’t a lot of outlets for home-grown, local culture to thrive,” Hall said. “I feel like

PLATTSBURGH — This Saturday, four acoustic acts will perform a punk-infused spin on folk and bluegrass music at the Koffee Kat. Local acts Marco Polio and Agent 922 will share the evening with Todi Stronghands from Halifax, Nova Scotia and Byron from Guelph, Ontario, all starting at 7 p.m. The only consistent member of Marco Polio is vocalist and guitarist Matt Hall, who also serves as the vice president, events coordinator and public relations coordinator for ROTA Gallery in Plattsburgh.

Mental health support offered by NAMI Forum to help families cope with a relative’s mental disorder
By Katherine Clark
katherine@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Living with the constant challenges of a family member with a mental illness is very difficult. The National Alliance on Mental Illness of the Champlain Valley would like to offer these families their services. NAMI will host a free Family to Family educational program for families who have loved ones with mental illness with the first of 12 forums beginning on March 6 through May 22. The programs will be held every Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the NAMI offices, 14 Healy Ave. Theresa Bennett, board member with NAMI and certified Family to Family instructor, said the program is designed for family members of people with a mental illness to get to-
gether to learn about coping mechanisms, empathy training for understanding how the world looks and sounds through the eyes of someone suffering from an illness and to offer a place just for them. “The most important factor to be learned is the basic belief that this is an organic brain disorder, centered in the brain as heart disease centers in the heart,” Bennett said. “We have many services but this program is just for family members to have a safe place to learn and share frustrations and concerns with people who may share their experiences.” The program is designed to be a safe place where families of those affected by mental illness can vent and learn from others how to manage. The free, 12-week program will cover a range of topics including current information on major brain disorders; the latest information about medications, including side effects and strategies for promoting medication adherence; information about the most effective treatments available, what to do in a crisis; how to handle the hospitalization of loved
ones, and relapse; problem solving and communication skills; advocating for a loved one; how to work with professionals; and lastly taking care of themselves so caretakers are better able to help a loved one. For Bennett, the journey with NAMI began when she sought guidance for learning about mental illness when a close member of her family was going through a rough time. “Their services were wonderful for us, there is no intake, they don’t ask personal information before they help you, you can call and get help and be off the phone in two minutes and sometimes that is all you have when someone you are caring for is having a hard time,” Bennett said. Her family member sought treatment and eventually went through recovery. Afterward Bennett said she had a strong desire to start looking for ways to help other people going through what she and her family went through and became certified with NAMI National. For more information about the program or to register call 561-2685 ext. 10 or register by email at namiofv@aol.com.

This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of home sellers don’t get what they want for their homes and become disillusioned and — worse — financially disadvantaged when they put their homes on the market.

APA: Help me help you I
t’s not often the Adirondack Park Agency gets good press. Let this be one of those few times. Media groups — including Denton — tend to use the APA as a convenient punching bag when property rights and economic development seem to take a back seat to environmental concerns. Rightfully so, we should be vigilant watchdogs of state government; however, we should also offer praise when it’s earned. Therefore, what the APA did for Indian Lake recently should be noted. In December 2012, APA Special Assistant for Economic Affairs Dan Kelleher released a marketing study to pinpoint which grocery chains are good candidates for Indian Lake (IGA and the Big M). The community has been without a grocery store for more than three years. This was the first such study Kelleher has compiled since joining the Agency in early 2012, and he’s hoping it won’t be his last. Asked why the APA used its important resources toward this project, we weren’t surprised to hear the same rhetoric we’ve heard for decades, about making sure Adirondack communities are sustainable and great places to live. We’ve heard that answer over and over without much definition for the word “sustainable” when it comes to economic development. Yet we were impressed by the APA’s approach to this project, and Kelleher did something during his Denton interview that government workers rarely choose to do; he explained something in plain English and with an honest answer: “We’re not exactly an organization that can go out and recruit new companies to locate to places. But we can give communities the data that they need to go do that themselves.” The APA is tiny compared to most state agencies with fewer than 60 staffers. So it doesn’t have many resources. In fact, Kelleher is the only person in the Economic Services Unit, and he received help on the Indian Lake marketing study from the two people in the Local Government Services Unit. So it’s true, they can’t go out and create economic development opportunities for Adirondack communities. That’s never really been the promise, though. What the APA has done well is work with towns and villages on local
land use plans and be a cheerleader for economic development, making sure to have a presence at major initiatives and conferences. But we don’t always see the APA’s economic development results on paper like we do with the Indian Lake Grocer Analysis. This shows in black and white that the APA can work within its mission to help communities help themselves. And one of the greatest tools they can provide is data, spelled out in a market analysis that Indian Lake can include with a business plan. Using this information, communities, such as Indian Lake, are now empowered to draft proposals to attract business. That means a bigger tax base, more jobs, and improving communities’ chances of becoming sustainable. So Kelleher is now making his Jerry Maguire plea of “Help me help you.” Communities should contact him (891-4050) if they have ideas for similar marketing studies. As for the elusive definition of sustainability, we applaud the Saranac Lake-based Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) for its current effort to draft a North Country Regional Sustainability Plan, which should be complete in the spring. The document will focus on liveable communities, economic development, water and waste management, energy, transportation and working landscapes. The ANCA website lists the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s definition for sustainability: “Sustainability is living, operating and growing more efficiently, while using fewer resources ... We can also foster communities that have lower costs, more businesses and jobs, and improved quality of life.” We should note that the ANCA Board president is Steve Erman, Kelleher’s predecessor at the APA, and APA Executive Director Terry Martino is the former executive director at ANCA. With their help — and the help of many at these organizations — the Adirondack Park just might be headed in the right direction, both environmentally and economically. And, in plain English, Indian Lake could soon have a new grocery store. —Denton Publications Editorial Board

The Sequester Quest
I
t’s appropriate that I draft this column flying at 10,000 feet while crossing this beautiful country of ours, on a quick overnight trip to Las Vegas for a publishers’ meeting. As I peer out the window, I ponder what our elected officials will do in the coming week with the March 1 Sequester deadline. For all of our sakes, I hope they’ve worked out a compromise to put the country on a correction course to begin addressing our ever-rising debt load. From this publisher ’s perspective, here are my recommendations to those who ultimately are suppose to be running this country and looking out for our best interest and the generations to come. Mr. President, you won the election. You’ve no further need to keep campaigning. It’s time to govern. I know you think you’ve got the upper hand over the bumbling Republicans, and perhaps you’re thinking this an opportune time to bring them to their knees. Mr. President, please take a lesson from President Lincoln. He and Gen. Grant understood we are all Americans, and standing on the neck of the South would not heal the wounds of the Union. It was time to unite and rebuild. Mr. President it’s within your reach to be the “Great Uniter” or the “Great Divider.” This nation needs to come together. Please use your reelection and your skills as a community organizer to be the ultimate nation organizer. Reach out to the opposition and embrace them as you’ve embraced your own party. Use your powerful office to unite and bring us all into the new future this country so desperately needs now. Mr. Boehner, as Speaker of the House it’s within your power to lead your party and the nation. Current public opinion of the Republican-led house is at an all-time low. If you can lead, you have nowhere to go but up. If you can’t lead the House and this nation to anything more than just further gridlock, then perhaps it’s time to step down and let a new leader seek solutions that enhance the party’s standing and inspire the party faithful. The nation and the economy need an optimistic outlook. We need to restore national pride. We need to put a new luster on America’s world imagine. The world needs American leadership now perhaps
more than ever, but if we can’t solve our own problems, how will we realistically Dan Alexander meet the Thoughts from many chalBehind the Pressline lenges that lie on the world agenda? Mr. Reed, you and your colleagues must lead the Senate to be the catalyst the brings the speaker and president together. It’s not an easy job but certainly more rewarding than presiding over a body that has accomplished little since you’ve taken control of the Senate. America, red states and blue states, we have a choice. We can continue to drive our elected officials to even greater forms of divisiveness and destroy this country for future generations or we can wake up and smell what we’ve been brewing and start sending the message of national unity that gives our elected officials the green light to move to common ground. It’s time to end this economic nightmare and recognize we’ve each got far more to lose than we’ll ever gain if we keep the country going in the current direction. We need less political cover and partisan rhetoric than we’re currently getting from harebrain stunts like the Sequester, where both parties sign on then blame the other side for its devastating effects. It was always nothing more than a façade, designed to give both parties cover during the election cycle. If both parties could sign on to that goofy plan as the best way to govern, just think what’s next if we don’t demand they set a new course now. It’s time for a new national quest … a United States quest to rediscover the promise and opportunity we owe future generations. Let’s start solving these issues now before it’s too late. We can do this. It won’t be easy, but every day we wait to start turning things around will make it that much more painful. Dan Alexander is president and CEO of Denton Publications. the group! Some members of the group join to regain mobility after an injury or illness; some members have permanent physical limitations. The point is to move as you are able. PSUC faculty and staff provide nutritional consultation. Members have created a private Facebook group and this connection keeps them engaged with optional activities in building the habits of an active lifestyle. Certified personal trainers and past participants are the coordinators and leaders, providing creative expertise and active weight loss role models. Jenn LeCuyer serves as the program coordinator for “Walking the Walk.” She has lost 70 pounds and her husband, Jamie, is an “honorary” member, having lost 170 pounds! So far, the biggest loser in their program has lost 110 lbs! Although the loss of one to two pounds per week is the goal, the group also focuses on “non-scale” victories; someone can wear their wedding ring again, another has gained mobility that they’d lost 10 years ago, another is off high blood pressure meds and is no longer diabetic. Climbing a flight of stairs is another victory to boast about! Movement and a positive sense of self are the goals—applause and laughter are the background music to this program. We met Mary, a Certified Personal Trainer, at one of our favorite haunts in Plattsburgh, HOT YOGA! Being a big believer in cross training, Mary is the fit dynamo behind this program. She recently accomplished a dream by receiving her Master’s degree in exercise science. She and her husband set up runs and Mary also hosts a workplace wellness program at Pfizer! No question that she’s a go-to-gal for inspiration and assistance in getting your own wellness program going. She can be reached at 2972192.

f the sparkle you see in MARY DUPREY’S eyes is any indication of the energy and passion she puts into PLATTSBURGH’S BIGGEST LOSERS, her participants better watch out; their lives are about to change! We visited the City Recreation Gym last week and were blown away by the camaraderie, determination and results of this program. Based on the NBC reality show, Plattsburgh’s Biggest Loser, directed by Mary Duprey, combines exercise, nutrition and accountability into a very successful weight loss and life changing program. Biggest Loser begins each fall with an application process. Forty to 50 applications are received by program coaches and collectively they choose the top 25. High blood pressure, diabetes,
family history of obesity, heart disease, joint replacements, depression, inability to lead an active family life and infertility are just a few of the physical and emotional reasons that people give as to why they want to participate. Candidates are carefully chosen; weight loss is one factor for consideration; but primarily by candidates having the commitment to creating a healthy life. The six month program kicks off with the Heart Walk. Following the Heart Walk, the bonding begins – group members weigh in and each participant shares the story of how they came to be part of The Biggest Loser’s Club. Biggest Losers continues with two workouts a week sprinkled with guest speakers on nutrition, fitness, and inspiration. Workouts have great variety and a fun flair such as the number of crunches equals the combined age of

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS: (Mary’s too!!) Don’t be extreme; weight loss and wellness are a life-long process and your personal regimen needs to be manageable and doable on a daily, monthly and yearly basis. Get moving; 10 to 15 minutes a day is something that everyone can commit to! Begin to eliminate processed foods, one food at a time…and shop around the perimeter of the grocery store, that’s where you’ll find the healthiest choices. Walk the stairs, park further out, move in any way that you can….you get the idea! Now, get going!

Aleka’s restaurant By Shaun Kittle shaun@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The food at Aleka's in downtown Plattsburgh is more than a meal—it’s a celebration. The restaurant is co-owned by Peter Kritziotis and Silvio Amaya, who also owns Giuseppe's Pizza Shop in Plattsburgh. Kritziotis has owned restaurants in the area for 12 years, and said the idea behind his newest venture was not to compete with the other businesses downtown, but to instead offer something new. Since Kritziotis and Amaya have been friends for more than 10 years, they decided to fuse the two types of food they specialize in—Greek and Italian—under one roof. The result was Aleka's, which opened Feb. 9. The restaurant is named after Kritziotis’ daughter, Aleka, who will be four years old in March. “Downtown Plattsburgh does not need another pizzeria,” Kritziotis said. “That’s not what we’re trying to be.” Aleka’s does have a few pizzas on its menu, but it isn’t their specialty—that’s their traditional Greek fare, like souvlaki and gyro, and their homemade Italian dishes, like shrimp scampi and chicken marsala. There are also items on the menu for people with gluten free, vegetarian and vegan diets. And, with the exception of the mozzarella sticks and chicken fingers, everything is handmade and cooked to order. “We make everything here the way I would make it in my own kitchen,” Kritziotis said. To wash it all down, Aleka’s will soon have a selection of Greek beers, which are comparable to Belgian and German beers, to add to its selection of international wines. The beverages were hand-picked to compliment the dishes offered at the restaurant, a way of rounding out the dining atmosphere Kritziotis and Amaya strive to create. “Customers might have to wait a little longer for their food when they come in here, but that's part of the experience,” Kritziotis said. “This restaurant is based on celebrating food every time you visit.”
Opening a new business is always a risk, but that's what Kritziotis said Plattsburgh needs. “Downtown needs people to take a risk,” he said. “What I want is to be a staple in Plattsburgh. I want to offer people something different to help bring them downtown so other businesses can grow, too. ” The robust business Aleka’s has experienced might indicate that Kritziotis is succeeding at drawing people downtown, and the loyalty of his staff might be evidence that he is becoming a staple in the area, too. Many of Kritziotis’ employees have worked for him for

League of Women Voters to make a case for campaign finance reform By Shaun Kittle
shaun@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — For about a year, the League of Women Voters has been studying how campaigns are financed, both locally and nationally. On Saturday, March 2, the Plattsburgh League of Women Voters will hold a free, open-to-the-public forum called “Preserving Our Democracy: The Case for Campaign Finance Reform for New York State” at the Plattsburgh Town Hall. Local Agriculture has Large Impact Did you know... that Clinton County, New York ranks 101st out of over 4,000 counties as Best Places to Farm in the United States according to Farm Futures magazine. Furthermore, Clinton County was ranked 3rd in New York State in the same study. The most recent Farm Census reports that Clinton County had a total agricultural production of more than $124,000,000. That’s right...124 million dollars of farm products produced right here in Clinton County. Most residents of our county probably didn’t know that they were living in such an important agricultural region. Probably because so few of us are actually farming. Although our remaining farms have increased in size over the past 20 to 30 years, our local farmers are still primarily family farms in the rural areas of our county. Whether you drive the Northway or take just about any secondary road in
or out of the county, you will pass through some of Northern NY’s finest farmland. Dairy farming is by far the largest farming enterprise in the North Country making up about half of our annual agricultural sales. Our area continues to be particularly suited to milk production. With our cool growing seasons and abundant moisture, the region is ideally suited for growing the perennial forages and grasses that make up the bulk of a dairy cow’s daily ration. While local cornfields and orchards are quite obvious and do make up a substantial part of our local crop land, the acreage currently growing hay, haylage and pasture is almost 50 percent more than the corn fields and apple orchards combined. Because of our location and ideal growing conditions for perennial forages, our region is home to several agricultural research stations who along with participating local farms are studying new crops and farming methods to benefit our local farmers. The
William H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute in Chazy, NY is a leading agricultural research facility and milks about 270 dairy cows. The Institute has donated a 40 acre parcel of cropland to perform agronomic research in cooperation with Cornell University and the Northern New York Agricultural Development Program. This locally performed research has a direct benefit to the farmers of the North Country. The Cornell Baker Farm in Willsboro, NY is another example of a research facility that is performing valuable studies to help our local region. Because of its close proximity to Lake Champlain the Baker Farm is currently studying the effects of farm runoff on lake quality and aquatic habitat. Optimizing crop productivity while also minimizing pollution and nutrient losses to waterways and ground water is especially important as local farms increase the amount of tile drainage. Careful management of manure
and applied nutrients ultimately saves farmers money and protects the environment. Most recently, consumers in our region have enjoyed a resurgence of small farms producing vegetables, fruit and livestock products for local consumption. The local foods movement is good for the local farms and keeps our food dollars circulating within our local economy. Weekly farmer’s markets and roadside farm stands start up every spring to offer a wide variety of produce. This is also a great time to find freshly made maple syrup at one of the many local maple producers. Because of the favorable farming conditions we enjoy, the North Country will continue to be a leader in agricultural production and our local farmers will continue to produce some of the finest dairy products, apples, field crops, maple syrup, eggs and livestock in Northern New York and beyond. – Peter Hagar, Agriculture Educator, Cornell Cooperative Extension Clinton County

Ordering from them doesn't decrease Allen's carbon footprint as much as when he shops at the local farmers market, but it is still better than buying tomatoes from California, he said. “Farmer Joe down the street is going to have a little pride and care about what he's doing and who he's selling to, because he's selling to his neighbors and his friends and his family,” Allen said. “Even though he's not having as high a profit margin as other people, he cares about what he's doing.” Allen said he is waiting to see what the farmers give him to work with before he can put together the Food from the Farm buffet, but he is expecting to offer salads, hearty stews, desserts, cheeses and jams. “You're going to see a lot of the apples and the maple syrups and the root vegetables,” Allen said. “I've also talked to some people that produce lamb and goat, so I will probably try to do a goat stew.” Even though the specifics are uncertain, Allen said the samplings will run the gamut of menu offerings—from appetizers to desserts. “I want to show people what can be done with the different items that are available right now,” Allen said. “I only serve to my customers what I'd serve to my family.”
Farmers from page 1 Amy Ivy, executive director for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Clinton County, said past attendees will recognize many of the locally produced items, including meat, eggs, maple syrup, honey and local wine. Some of the farmers participating in the event will have those items for sale, and some might even have storage vegetables on hand, products like kale and potatoes, which can be stored for long periods of time. “The fact that we can have an event like this in March, the most challenging time of year for food production, shows how much we have in this region,” Ivy said. “It shows people the diversity of food they can have.” A pre-season farmers market is just a small part of what Food from the Farm is all about, though. Information is the driving force of the event, and it will be readily available. Attendees will be able to get educated on things like gardening, nutrition and Community Supported Agriculture, a program some farmers offer that allows people to pay a set price for a weekly share of farm fresh products. It's like paying one lump sum for a year's grocery bill. Ivy said CSAs have experienced an increased demand in the North Country, and that she wants more people to understand how they work. She also explained that the underlying theme behind Food from the Farm is twofold—it gives people a chance to meet local farmers who produce a variety of different goods, and it also shows the farmers that there is a demand for locally produced food in the North Country. “The local food movement is gradually increasing here,” Ivy said. “More people want to know where their food comes from.” The reason, Ivy said, is that when people buy local food it is fresher, it tastes better, it supports the local economy and people take peace of mind knowing that the farming practices the farmers growing their food employ. And this year, there will be a little more than peace of mind to entice people to buy local—there will be a variety of food made from locally raised products for tasting.

Marco Polio from page 1 that’s really important as a building block for any community.” And for Hall, that’s where music comes in. He cited the blues, American folk music and hip hop as direct voices for people’s lives, and added that those forms of expression are imbedded in the cultures from which they sprung. The musicians performing at Koffee Kat emulate some of those characteristics, too. “The two musicians coming from Canada are genuine folk musicians,” Hall said. “They’re writing and playing and speaking about what is going on in their lives and in their culture.” The word ‘punk’ often implies something else, though, and that something is loud, unapologetic and abrasive. But Saturday’s show is acoustic, and punk is merely one ingredient used to complete a unique recipe. “Don’t let that word turn you off,” Hall said. “This is melodic music; it’s not assaulting at all.”
If you go The show begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 2 at the Koffee Kat, located on 104 Margaret St. in Plattsburgh. There is no cover charge, but the musicians are accepting tips.

A fish tail
A
s winter begins a slow transition towards spring, my enthusiasm for the coldest season has already begun to diminish. I still plan to get in a few more days of skiing, and hopefully at least one outing with my ice boat. However, I’ve already begun scouring the maps in an effort to pin down a location for the first fishing trip of the new season. I’m ready to trade ski poles for fishing poles, and get on with the business of taking a slow troll across a small pond. The bug has already bit me, and I just can’t shake it loose. It started while I was sorting through old photos, in an effort to put together a slide presentation for the annual Sportsmen’s Dinner, which will be hosted in Schroon Lake on March 23. As the photos flashed one by one, across the screen, I began to get the jitters. What followed was the usual routine of rolling out the maps, checking stocking reports, calculating the mileage into the ponds and finally, taking on the dreaded task of fleshing out my gear. Soon, my back porch was cluttered with squeaky reels and stinky creels, which were buried under a pile of flies, lures and an assortment of new and true lies to go with each of them. After poking around in the pile of gear, and making a feeble attempt to re-disorganize the mess, I decided to go back and sort

through the slides. With the images of big brook trout flashing before my eyes, and the stale scent of fish lingering on my fingers, I began to get the shakes. And even though I know it is far too early to even contemplate the prospect of casting a line; it is never too soon to dream about it. Several hours later, my wife finally woke me from the overstuffed chair, and sent me off to bed. She claimed I was mumbling some nonsense about taking ‘one more cast’, and figured it was time to sleep it off. I awoke the following morning, well rested and to discover a NYSDEC press release in my email box. The release offered detailed information concerning a variety of new places to fish that were recently added to the DEC website. My dreams were answered. The new waters include ponds and lakes as well as rivers and streams throughout New York State that have recently been added to DEC's website. They include numerous ponds and lakes, as well as rivers and streams in the Adirondacks and Champlain basin. Websites with information on the waters are available at Adirondacks and Lake Champlain: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/28244.html (DEC Region 5); North Central New York: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/47504.html) (DEC Region 6) and West Central New York: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/47509.html Currently, there are many web based search engines, which make it easy and convenient to search and locate any of the new waters on a map. You simply type in the name of a pond or a river, and with the punch of a button, a pile of potential fishing waters will appear before your eyes. I use a search engine located at http://newyork.hometownlocator.com. It provides instant information on the waters I seek, as well as a detailed map on how to get there. Last year, when the ponds were free of ice by April 1, I was taken by surprise, as were many veteran anglers. Although trout season has historically opened statewide on the first of April, it was rare that Adirondack anglers ever had a chance to fish for trout on an ice free pond, or on a river that wasn’t raging with spring melt. Incrementally, the Adirondack trout season has continued to inch closer and closer to an April Fools opener. Anglers seeking trout on the ponds at ice out, should plan accordingly.
end of a line; always trumps the virtual reality of staring at an electronic screen. It's a great story, especially for young inspiring female anglers. Her Uncle Rocky described their day shared on the water, “The rod bent double and the drag squealed and line stripped away like a worn out sweater snagged on a closed car door. This was the first sign a monster had sucked in the live shrimp on a 2.0 circle hook. The equipment did its job, now it was Cassie’s turn. With all her might Cassie held her ground, gaining line then giving some back. The ebb and flow slowly turned in Cassie’s favor. As the swirl of the tail came close to the boat, the fish ran again, with more squealing of the reel and more pressure on the 12 year olds frame. After 15 minutes of muscle wrenching agony and excited coaching from both her father, Bernie Bullis and her uncle, the fish was in the net and boated. It was 26 ½ inch Red Fish, a trophy by any measure. After the adrenaline rush and numerous photo ops, Cassie was asked, “Release or cook?” She made the right choice, as a meal of Blackened Red Fish is hard to beat!” I asked Cassie what was going through her mind as she battled the fish? “I thought it was going to pull me in!” she replied. I’ve always been a strong advocate for getting kids involved in the outdoors, whether hiking, fishing, skiing or hunting. And I subscribe to the old notion that if your kids hunt or fish with you; you won’t have to go hunting after them. Sharing outdoor adventures creates a unique bond among participants, which lasts longer, and stays stronger than almost any other activity they may share. I suppose it comes as a result of a shared trust, and the confidence that fellow travelers place on their companions. It may also come from the sharing of responsibilities and the excitement of discovering and dealing with the ever unpredictable, nature of nature. Such was the case when Cassie Bullis, a 7th grader at Seton Central in Plattsburgh recently joined her Uncle Rocky and Aunt JoAnn LaGrone for a fishing trip near Clearwater Beach, Florida.Clearwater Beach Florida. As an avid advocate for getting kids involved in the outdoors, Cassie’s story intrigued me. I'm a firm believer in the theory that a fishing rod is the best XBox detox tool ever invented. I’ve seen it happen, and the reality of having a live fish on the
